Decidit's Curse! Elder Faerie :D He's an Angel. Angels were created by the witches as a way to keep an eye on Earthbread, and there are three different types. Wanderers, Guides, and Guardians.
Wanderers would be like fairies or fae from legends. they don't really have a role other than to exist and watch over life for the witches. The Guides, which would be Silverbell, would have more direct interactions with cookies. Their job is to watch over the cursebearers, sometimes even interacting with them directly, though that is rare. They're also the most friendly. The Guardians are the executioners, defending against cursebearers and stepping in when they become too far gone. Mercurial Knight would be a Guardian.
Elder Faerie is the King of the Angels and thus, has four wings.
All Cursebearers, depending on how far along their curse is, have an instinctual dislike for angels.

Six becomes Five

Contains spoilers for Episode 2 of Beast Yeast!
Tumblr media
By the time you arrived back to the group, who were all struggling to process still the whiplash of the past half hour, the changes to the Silver Kingdom already began.
"The Faerie Cookies.." You whispered in horror, gently setting Pure Vanilla Cookie down as you finally shrunk down to your normal size. However, your old outfit stayed. "Shadow Milk Cookie.."
"Reader Cookie, you're one of the old heroes?" White Lily Cookie was the one to speak everything on everyone's mind, looking at you with confusion.
You lowered your head, shameful. "I am, yes. I'm sorry I never told any of you."
"Did you.. not want to come here?" Pure Vanilla Cookied asked, his voice softer than usual. "Is this why you were so hesitant..?"
You hesitated before nodding. "It was. But.. I knew that I couldn't let you guys go here alone."
Elder Faeire Cookie narrowed his eyes the smallest bit. "That is why you seemed so familiar. You've done a good job at hiding who you once were."
"My days as Sparkling Joy Cookie are over," you declared.
"But it has a nice ring.." Gingerbrave muttered as the group began forward.
As you began traversing through the now twisted kingdom, the inhabitants of the Silver Kingdom now jesters and clowns. Doing tricks, and seemingly not noticing anyone. Silverbell Cookie was particularly distraught, but Mercurial Knight Cookie made sure to help him stay focused.
It wasn't long, however, until Pure Vanils Cookie stumbled and placed a hand to his head. "Ah..!!!"
"Pure Vanilla Cookie?!" Your attention snapped to him in and instant, and the group halted. Your hands gently grasped his shoulders.
"Pure Vanilla Cookie... Are you alright...?!" White Lily Cookie gasped.
"I'm... alright.." He assured the both of you, leaning heavily against you. "Just a bit dazed, that's all.."
You hardly believed him, not with how his Soul Jam was pulsing. You eyed it warily, but decided not to say anything for the moment.
"If you're sure." You placed a hand to his back in comfort. He smiled gratefully.
"Well then, let's see.." A familiar voice chortled, and your jam ran cold. "I said hello to Pure Vanilla Cookie... That's one."
"Some Faeries... Two. Some teeny-tiny Cookies... Three."
Your scepter reformed in your hand, and you placed your arm in front of Pure Vanilla Cookie in a protective gesture. The rest of the group all quickly entered defensive positions.
"What's the next number? Six?" You could hear the grin in Shadow Milk Cookie's voice. "Oh! He he he! Seems like there's a special someone missing!"
"NO! Where is he? Where did he go? Aww, I was sure he'd be the first one to greet me when I'm free!"
You hardly paid attention to what was being said next, not even the outburst of Shadow Milk Cookie. You were too focused on figuring out just what your former friend's plan was. He had done something to Pure Vanilla, and you had no doubt about it. He always had an affinity for plays too.
It hit you like a train.
"He's going to put on a play." You spoke, and just as you realized, a giant stage appeared.
"Huh?! A giant stage?!" Gingerbrave gasped.
"What is he planning...?!" White Lily Cookie narrowed her eyes.
"Now...! Once upon a time, there were six amazing Cookies! Truly brilliant!"
Puppets of the Five Beasts and you popped up. While the Five Beasts were silhouettes, yours was completely colored in, with many details.
What stood out was the large and beautiful wings on your back, almost like a butterfly's. Your hair was long and sparkling, trailing off into mist at the ends. Your expression was full of joy, a wide smile on your face. A silver crown was drawn atop on your head, ordained with small gems, the colors of the other Beasts. Around your neck hung your petal-esque Soul Jam, sparkles surrounding it.
"However, there was one Cookie who was truly radiant and loving like no other! Sparkling Joy Cookie!"
The other puppets disappeared as your sole one remained. Rays resembling sunbeams danced around you, as did your puppet danced around.
"Sparkling Joy Cookie was perfect in every way! They loved and they loved like no other, bringing joy to the little common Cookies of the world."
"However.. this love wasn't without its price, no no!"
Your puppet flew down and then came back up. It showed you on your knees, weeping. A large, grand, and quiet frankly scary puppet of a Witch appeared, her hands hovering over you.
"The Witches saw this kindness, and when the other five brilliant Cookies began to have their fun, they turned Sparkling Joy Cookie AGAINST THEIR TRUE LOVED ONES!!"
The outburst only made Gingerbrave's group flinch back, and you had a horrified look on your face.
"Ahem.. Apologies for that! Now, where were we.. Ah, yes!"
The puppets flipped, and their side profiles faced the audience now.
"Sparkling Joy Cookie was very resistant to the Witches' manipulation at first! 'No!' They cried. 'I won't! They've done nothing wrong. They're pure still!' But.."
The puppets changed, showing the Witch covering the puppet's eyes with her hands. "Sparkling Joy Cookie was only so strong.. and they fell to the whim of their creators.. aiding in the capture of their friends.."
You softened a bit, hearing how.. somber Shadow Milk Cookie was. As if he was truly saddened.
"And soon after, a tree was planted, and a foolish king rose to power.."
The stage vanished, as did the audience, and your group pressed forward.
"Reader Cookie, was what he said true?" Silverbell Cookie asked, his voice soft as he shot away some advancing puppets.
"Partly." You narrowed your eyes. "I was friends with them, once upon a time. I did help the Witches imprison them, but.. it was of my own will."
A new stage appeared, and a new puppet appeared, called the Fool-King. It wasn't hard to see how that was meant to represent. You tuned out that part until Gingerbrave asked Pure Vanilla if he was alright.
At his insistence that he was fine, White Lily Cookie shook her head. "Tell us... What did Shadow Milk Cookie tell you earlier...?"
With that, Pure Vanilla Cookie began to appear more frazzled. "He.. disguised himself as the Light of Truth. And spoke to me from the Dark Side of the Moon..."
You froze at that, your heart practically stilling. Shadow Milk Cookie.. could reach Pure Vanilla Cookie. He could try and lie to him.
Don't tell me you're just going to let that happen?
The familiar sound of your voice, if not a little more mature, tsked at you.
Some compassion you are, letting him suffer. Share me with him!
"Wh.. you can't be serious!" You whispered softly, your eyes wide. "That's too dangerous. What if Shadow Milk Cookie tries to corrupt us?"
I'm stronger than that, and so are you. Share me with him.
You bit your bottom lip, and Pure Vanilla Cookie rested a hand on your shoulder. "Reader Cookie?" He asked. "Are you alright-?"
He cut himself off when you spun to look at him and gently grabbed his hands. Your Soul Jam pulsed and a magic whipped out, forming a large bubble around the entire group.
"Huh?! Reader Cookie?!" Wizard Cookie clutched his staff.
Elder Faeire Cookie looked shocked. "This magic.."
You exhaled softly, and you resumed your old appearance once more. However, your wings were now visible, spread wide and grand.
"I have an idea on how to help you," you spoke, voice soft. "My only question is.. do you-"
"Yes." Pure Vanilla Cookie spoke, his voice soft and full of admiration. You blushed intensely. "I trust you, Reader Cookie."
You nodded and closed your eyes. You leaned forward and pressed your forehead against his. "Then stay calm.. and open your heart to me."
Familiar magic, radiant and ever-changing in color, began to swirl around you two. Your Soul Jam was glowing particularly bright. Your wings gently glistened in the light, and your hair grew to the length it once was.
A familiar light form from the magic. It zipped and swirled around, your laughter coming from it.
Oh, what love! What compassion!
With what sounded like a joyful laugh, it zipped over to the duo, spun around them, and then shot towards Pure Vanilla Cookie's Soul Jam.
The magic died down, and you let out an exhale. Then, you began to laugh softly. "That.. that worked! I didn't think it would..!"
"What was that?!" Wizard Cookie shouted, and you blushed sheepishly.
"I'm sure you saw that light.. that was the Light of Compassion in its purest form." You explained. Your form slowly began to shift back to the regular one you used. "It insisted that I share it with Pure Vanilla Cookie."
Said Cookie spared a glance at his Soul Jam, and there was a small petal pattern in the middle.
White Lily Cookie couldn't help a small smile. "It did mention something about love.."
"HAHA WHAT?" You laughed nervously. The barrier around the group fell, and you immediately rushed forward. "C'MON GUYS, LET'S GO GET SHADOW MILK COOKIE!"
Small bits of laughter came from the group, and Pure Vanilla Cookie felt a little lighter as he followed.
Well, hello there! What joy and love you hold in your heart..
The sound of your voice, yet more mature, echoed through his mind. Yet, as if like second nature, Pure Vanilla Cookie knew that it was the Light of Compassion.
Whenever that Shadow Milk Cookie comes back, trying to trick you, focus on me or Sparkling Joy Cookie, Pure Vanilla Cookie. We won't let him lead you astray!
"What you said.." He whispered softly. "About love. Did you mean it?"
Of course. It sounded almost amused. I do believe that you're the only one Sparkling Joy Cookie would show the full extent of their power to.
Pure Vanilla Cookie couldn't help but feel honored.
But, of course, that didn't last long.
Especially not when Elder Faeire Cookie was struck down.

Yan! Elder Faerie x Reader
Oneshot
Warnings: Yandere, slight guilt tripping
-Snared Lily-
At last, you have finally attained freedom.
Leaves ruslte as you tussle through the forest. It's dark aside from the feint light of the moon. For the first time in a long time, all is silent. There are no birds calling, and there is no wind. The only thing you can hear are your own steps, echoing emptily through the dark forest.
He, who you dare not name, is nowhere to be seen.
After such a long time of being stuck in a cage, you may now flourish among the rest.
"Ah, there you are my little fae," said a voice from behind you.
You began to run just a bit faster, feeling your freedom the closest it's ever been since he began isolating you.
Today may finally be joyous.
You froze, feeling your heart beat just a bit faster.
"You worried me so much when you just disappeared like that! I looked everywhere for you, dearest." He grabbed your wrist and spun you around so you were facing him.
Elder Faerie's eyes were soft, just as his voice was, but you could tell he wasn't pleased. Behind those serene eyes was a glint of silent fury.
Instinctively, you pulled away from him. Your foot landed onto the ground behind you, the leaves rustling with the abrupt landing.
"Why do you run, little fae, when all I do is to protect you?" His hands geaped around yours and he pulled you close to him.
So, is this it? You're just going to go back with him and leave behind your freedom?
"No no no no no! Let me go!" You struggled against his grasp, yet to no avail. You fighting against him was quite pathetic and insignificant.
Elder Faerie was unmoving, and he let out a small sigh. "Come on my love, there are many dangers in the nighttime forest. Let's return to the kingdom."
"No! I'm not going back!" You shouted, still attempting to escape him.
Then, he'd look to with a peculiar look in his eyes. They seemed quiet sullen, yet there was something dark about it.
"I can't let you leave, or you may wither away, just as she once did. I simply cannot allow another one that I hold dear to me to become harmed."
He'd gaze absent mindedly to the side.
"Even if you do not understand it now, know that everything I do is to keep you safe. So please, let me protect you." He tucked a stray strand of your hair behind your ear with gentle fingers and began to lead you back to the kingdom again.
You had almost tasted freedom. You could almost have been carried away by the wind, yet you were returning to that golden cage.
You understood it well; that if you were to leave just as she once did, it would ruin him.
He loved you very dearly, and though you hated to admit it, you also loved him deep down.
So here you were, now returning to become a snared Lily.
Nothing but a beautiful object that yearns to return to the soil.

Beach Day (ElderLily modern au)
Elder Faerie and White Lily are on their first date since they tied the knot and got married to each other, and it’s your classic day at the beach! Sadly, Elder Faerie isn’t as excited for this as he’s acting, for he has a secret he’s kind of ashamed of
Tags: transmasc elder faerie, body dysmorphia, elder faerie has top surgery scars, a shitload of fluff and cuteness
“I can’t wait to show you the beach! It’s so beautiful.” White Lily excitedly told Elder Faerie.
As a kid, Coconut Beach was one of her favorite places to visit, next to Dragon Hill. It was this beautiful beach, with the softest sand, the clearest water, the cleanest coast, and so, so many different sea shells and little fish, and even some bits of coral from a coral reef near the coastline. That beach, as well as the national park, sparked her love for travel, and as soon as she was old enough to be on her own, she traveled the world, discovering new cultures and figuring out who she truly was.
It’s how she met Elder Faerie, it’s how she fell into that coma, it’s how she discovered all the fear and grief and darkness that plagued the world and sparked yet another passion, one for peace and love and justice and prosperity. But above all else, it’s how she realized just how precious her friends and her lover truly are, and how despite her now fragile form, she must care for them in any and every way possible. Crazy how the butterfly effect works, huh?
That beach changed her life, and now, that beach was going to be hers and Elder Faeries first date since they married and moved in together.
“And I can’t wait to see it, my love.” Elder Faerie replied, glancing at his wife and smiling softly.
Admittedly, Elder Faerie was happy to be going to this beach. He had seen just how happy Lily was to be taking him to this place, and the way her eyes lit up while describing this place to him, and after seeing all the horrible things she had been through recently, he knew he had to do whatever possible in order to preserve that innocent joy. Even if that meant facing a fear that had been looming over his head for years now.
See, Elder Faerie is a transgender Man. He was born a girl, with his cutesie innocence and his love for both cute girl stuff like fashion and makeup along with boyish stuff like video games and fantasy weapons. However, when he hit puberty, he realized something was off about his identity, about the way his soul felt broken when he developed curves and breasts, and his suspicions were confirmed when he discovered the gender spectrum in health class; he realized that he was in fact, a man. Sure, he still liked the classic “girly stuff” like cute dresses and his long, luxurious hair that reached down to his waist, but didn’t mean that he was truly a man.
He was a man stuck in a girls body, and now with a new body build and a bunch of crazy hormones, he was aware of how trapped he was, and he hated it.
Of course, White Lily knew all of this, and it almost made her love him even more. The way he braved such a difficult time, how he discovered such an amazing thing about himself, and how he was willing to share such a personal detail with her made her heart flutter with admiration and love.
However, because of his gender identity, Elder Faerie had gotten top surgery when he was in his early twenties, and while White Lily was fully aware of this too, she had never seen the scars left behind by his procedure.
Despite how wonderful he felt no longer having breasts, he hated those damned scars. It felt like some sort of burden, a dark secret that was harder to own up to than even realizing that he was trans. It made him feel incomplete, disgusting, fake. He had tried overcoming his fear by coming up with some stupid scar story like trying to dry a kitchen knife off with his shirt, but nothing realistic enough came to mind.
He wanted so desperately to believe that White Lily would accept him no matter what kind of scars were on his body, but nothing could calm his fear.
“…sunscreen, umbrella, drinks…” White Lily was mumbling to herself. She then turned to Elder Faerie, who had a wide-eyed blank expression on his face as he tightly clutched the steering wheel. “Are you okay, honey?”
Elder Faerie snapped out of his daze and glanced at White Lily with a confused expression on his face. “Huh? Oh, of course, I’m just thinking of all the wonderful things that might be at this magical beach you love so much. I packed my bathing suit, right?”
“You’re wearing it, silly. Don’t you remember putting on your swim trunks before we left?” White Lily giggled, “Are you… sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine.” Elder Faerie reassured her, “just tired I guess.”
Just then, they pulled into the beach’s parking lot, and after finding a place to park, they got out and unloaded their stuff. Walking onto the soft sand on the beach, the couple found a spot, laid out their towel, and got to enjoying the beach. They shared snacks and drinks, made cute little sandcastles, and talked about life together.
Then, White Lily wanted to get in the water.
“I’m going to get changed into my bathing suit,” she said, pointing her thumb at the nearby bathroom, “why don’t you take your shirt off so we can go swimming? The water is really nice.”
Elder Faerie nodded. “Go ahead, I’ll be here waiting for you.”
Once she had walked off, Elder Faerie sat down on the towel and wrapped his arms around his knees, burying his head in the space between his knees and his chest. He just felt so… ashamed. He was ashamed of his body, of the scars on his chest, of his fear, of his cowardice, hell, he was ashamed of his shame! Most of all, he was ashamed of his lack of trust in his own wife. He knew White Lily loved him for who he was, and that she would be perfectly fine with the remnants of his top surgery. However, something deep within him was withholding his ability to show her the truth. Would she really be fine with it? Even if she was, how would she react to the way he kept this from her. There were just too many variables to trust that it would go well.
“Fae…?”
Elder Faerie’s head shot up at the sound at his nickname, and he saw White Lily standing before him, looking concerned. “Fae, what’s wrong? You’ve seemed off all day.”
“I’m okay, I promise.” Elder Faerie replied, shaking his head.
“Honey…” White Lily sat in front of Elder Faerie, “I can tell that something’s wrong. I know you want to support me and share my passions and stuff, but I don’t want you do feel like I forced you to come here.”
“No, it’s not that, I wanted to come here! I just-“ his breath hitched, and he could feel the sting of tears in the corners of his eyes, “I just-”
Before he could say anything more, White Lily leaned forward and pulled him into a hug, squeezing him tightly and nuzzling her nose into the crook of his neck. “It’s okay, Fae. You don’t have to worry about anything, i promise. I won’t force you to tell me what’s wrong, but I can’t help you if you don’t communicate with me. Just tell me what you need from me and I’ll do whatever I can to make you feel better.”
Though hesitant at first, Elder Faerie returned the hug, relaxing into White Lily’s grasp. “There’s… something that I need to show you.”
Elder Faerie stood up and slowly unbuttoned his shirt, shrugging it off of his shoulders. There was his bare chest, featuring his top surgery scars.
White Lily stood as well and gazed at the scars, gently reaching out and grazing them with her fingertips. “This is what you wanted to show me?”
“As you know before we met, I got top surgery.” Elder Faerie explained. “The doctors removed the breast tissue, and I didn’t have boobs anymore, and it felt amazing. But these scars, they made me feel ugly and unwanted. I know I could’ve easily trusted you to see them, but I couldn’t bring myself to show you.”
Once he had finished, White Lily immediately pulled him into a loving kiss. “You are not ugly, you are the most beautiful person in the universe, and you have been the most amazing boyfriend ever. Even before we confessed our love for each other, even when I was in that coma, you were the most incredible man that I could have ever encountered in my entire life, and a few scars aren’t going to change my view of you.”
“I’ve just felt so ashamed of them,” Elder Faerie admitted, “I was ashamed of my scars, and ashamed of my own inability to tell you. I mean, I’m supposed to be the brave one in this relationship! I’m supposed to support you, protect you, keep you safe and loved! And I’ve survived so much, and yet I’m afraid of showing you a few little scars.”
“It’s okay to be scared, my love.” Lily replied, “it’s okay to be vulnerable, and you don’t need to protect me. And how I see it, these scars tell a story. One of pain and fear and confusion and doubt, but also one of hope and love and triumph. They tell a story of a challenge you were able to overcome and the way it changed you for the better.”
Elder Faerie looked at his girlfriend lovingly, feeling himself start to tear up again. “I love you so much…”
“I love you more~” White Lily replied in a cheerful, sing-song tone of voice, “now c’mon, once you touch the water you’re going to love it.”
White Lily grabbed her lovers hand and started to pull him towards the water. Elder Faerie happily followed, quickening his pace so that he could walk next to her. Once they reached the water, White Lily dipped her toes in, Elder Faerie following suit. Then White Lily playfully kicked water at him.
“Hey!” Elder Faerie said through giggles. Putting his hands up defensively, he kicked water at White Lily as well, earning a giggle and a similar response from White Lily. Soon, the tension between them had melted away, and it was as if their sad yet intimate moment had never happened. The two were playing like kids, giggling and splashing each other, swimming out into the deeper parts of the water, and even exploring the nearby coral reef, White Lily of course having to wave hello to all the cute little fish that swam past them.
Soon, hours had passed by, and by the time they had dried themselves off and loaded their stuff back into the car, the sun was setting behind them.
“Today was amazing,” Elder Faerie gushed, “you were right, that beach is amazing.”
“I told you, that beach changed my life,” White Lily agreed, “I know it’s just sand and water, but that beach is the reason I decided to explore the world, and we both know what would’ve happened if I had never traveled.”
Elder Faerie chuckled lightly. “Well, you did travel, and we met, and we fell in love, and now we’re married, so it doesn’t matter.” He hesitated for a moment, then added “Maybe we should go there more often. Maybe even invite my little brother and his son when they visit.”
White Lily smiled softly and rested her head on her husband’s shoulder.
“That would be amazing…”

Mom White Lily Cookie HeadCanons
Tumblr media
(If this not your thing please don’t read :3)
•When White Lily saw her child was born, her heart was pure of love and joy
•Her kid is her perfect cookie, she will protect them no matter what
•The child will give off a strong floral scent, so she definitely knows where they are at
•If her child is a boy, something comfortable (mostly a black turtle neck and black pants with a green cape) and if her child is a girl, something elegant (long dresses or short dresses, with a green cape with white gloves)
•There’s always a butterfly near the child, that butterfly represents their god father Elder Faerie. She always tells her kid to not to squish it
•Since the kids will also protected by the knights of the faerie kingdom, it’s hard to get alone time
•Lastly it depends if her kids follow in her footsteps, if they don’t she would respect that because we don’t want another dark enchantress incident with them

Sometimes when there are two things that I love very much, I put them together and achieve serotonin.
Tinker Bell x Tangled, high fluff ahead; a oneshot featuring a highly kintsugi narrative. Ah, the irony of having written this earlier and having the ending eaten by Tumblr, thus resulting in the story's own rebuilding--and crying, a lot of crying.
It had been a long day, and when the tinker sparrowman showed up, Quirin suspected the trials of dustkeeping advisor were still long from over.
"Fly with you, Quirin!", he greeted, wings fluttering softly with excitement, "I don't suppose you still have this week's ration? I got, ah, a little caught up with a new idea, you know how it goes."
He chuckled sheepishly, but before the elder could so much as get to the right name in the leafbook checklist, the tinker had unrolled a new ink-smudged diagram from his bag.
"It's going to really help the harvest talents! If we just put irrigation lines here, here, and here", he said, gesturing to a few places on the diagram, "Then we can counteract the alkalinity of the soil with this compound--oh, and if we add just a pinch of a common leavening agent, they won't have to worry about crossbreeding stronger stems!"
Varian's wings glowed a soft tangerine with pride as Quirin spread it out carefully on the counter. When the tinker had first Arrived, and the first mutters had soon after reached the Dust Tree, he had assumed his enthusiastic disposition and friendly chatter were a ploy to win him over in defense, or perhaps get more dust; it wouldn't have been a first. But by the autumn harvests, he had relentedly admitted to himself that Varian simply had too much excitement to share and too few friends to share it with. In spite of himself, Quirin must have taken on a warmer attitude towards him and started listening more attentively to his plans somewhere along the line.
"Varian", he said softly, his hand not leaving the dust ration just yet, "The harvest faeries are growing butterfly weed by the second line. You'll cut right through the roots. And where do you think you're getting this? The rings?"
"'s okay, I'm using supplejack vines." he countered, waving it off, "Those wrap around other vines or roots without bothering them too much. Annnnd, I just found these by the mainland..."
With a fluttering hop and too much fidgeting with the grass ties on his bag, Varian proudly held out one of many eyelets, perfect for irrigation.
Quirin gave the high-spirited tinker a pat on  the back. "So long as you're careful, boy. Get one of the water talents to reinforce your goggles--and you might as well ask them to bring the rest of the talents as well."
"Thanks, Quirin!" he chirped, sweeping the ration and the blueprints into his bag, "You won't be disappointed, I promise!"
It wasn't until moments after Varian had left that Quirin realized he had implied a use of dust in this compound of his...and that his feet had never left the ground on the way home.
#################################
When Varian arrived the next week, to say he looked miserable would be to say his invention had merely not worked as he had planned.
Dripping wet from his burst goggles to the tips of his sodden wings, he smiled weakly for a moment, then sighed.
"Soooo it turns out supplejack is flammable."
"Mm-hmm." Quirin responded, passing him a blanket of moss to dry off with. If he'd had a pinch of pixie dust for every angry harvest talent who'd implored him to withhold the rations in the last week, the tree would never need so much as a grain of blue dust
The tinker's gaze was focused on the floor, tears welling up in his eyes. "I'd fly backwards if I could." he apologized. As an afterthought, he held up the edge of one damp wing, its costal margin and apex singed. "Well...I'd fly anywhere if I could."
"Not again, Varian." Quirin sighed softly, and the newer arrival's heart sank.
"Did you ask Rapunzel to heal that for you?" Notable for her ornate golden wings, the lightkeeping guardian should have at least been able to fix the worst of the damage and let the sparrowman fly in a week or so, but he shook his head and wrung out the towel.
“Sh-she was busy with some of the other faeries, and I-and I didn’t know where else to go. Besides, it, heh, probably won’t be the worst thing if I stay grounded for a little while.”
“Probably not.” he agreed, “It would be a shame to lose my favorite regular, though.”
Varian gave a soft slight smile, followed by a half-second’s wince as his wings protested the attempt at instinctual quavering. “Really, sir?”
“Sure as anything.” Quirin responded, smiling warmly. A moment later, that smile was gone, replaced by a firm hand on his shoulder and a stern glare.
“It isn’t as though we get a lot of happy visitors nowadays, what with whatever you’re doing with the dust.”
“--alchemy--”
“Varian. Do us both a favor and don’t let me hear any more of it. You’re lucky enough not to have lost your wings this time; I’m legally allowed to withhold or cut dust rations if you manage to find a way to destroy the fields like this again.”
The tinker’s glow burned a brief peach with indignation as he slammed his hands onto the counter. “But alchemy could really help Pixie Hollow! All the last plan needed was a different breed of vine; all the test subjects even showed consistent a-accrescence in response to the solution.”
“The tests are irrelevant if the results aren’t the same when it’s demonstrated. Pixie Hollow can’t have any more harvests destroyed.”
“The fields will grow back stronger than before.” he retorted stubbornly.
“The harvest talents won’t.” Quirin shot back, pinching the bridge of his nose with frustration, “Varian, tinker talents may delight to tear their work down only to build it again better than before, but harvest talents invest their whole livelihoods into their fields. Just the slightest change disrupts the crop yield, and no faerie can afford to push that deadline.”
The sparrowman’s shoulders dropped. “The harvest talents were....rea-really hurt because of...me, weren’t they?”
“I’m afraid so.” the dustkeeper responded gently.
His shoulders trembled, the tears in his eyes finally spilling down his face. "Now win-winter is going to be delayed an-and they'll have to scrap the whole field and-and-and..."
And Quirin wrapped him in a hug affectionate and strong and just loose enough not to jostle his wings and everything was safe if just for a minute.
"Shh, shh", he murmured, his voice a low rumble in his chest. "Though the harvest talents might not forgive you today or tomorrow, they will soon enough. They'll work together to restore what they can, and the fields will be ready to sleep by winter. Hush now, lad, what do tinker talents do best?"
"Tear things down and build them up again better than they were before." he answered quietly.
"So long as you're doing your best to be better today than you were yesterday, think of it as rebuilding. You've got to quit thinking of yourself as scrap when you're simply not off the iron yet."
Varian sniffled, a flicker of a wince as his wings protested his instinctual attempt at fluttering. "I guess repairs to the harvest carts would make a pretty good start, then?"
Quirin gave the tinker talent a firm pat on the back. "I think they'd appreciate it a lot."
"Oh, and Varian?" he called as the other stopped in the doorframe, softly tossing him the dust rations, "If you ever need a patch, I can always make time for a favorite regular."
He caught the bag with a gentle hit to the chest, a grin lighting up his face like a sunbeam. The sparrowman's wings were stilled, but in the last light of the afternoon, his glow was as warm an orange as the dustkeeper had ever seen it.

Moon Phases and Correspondences
The moon has been captivating people since the beginning of time. It’s guided our way on the darkest of nights and pulls at the tides as well as our emotions. There are myths and stories about the moon from every ancient culture, and it is still a central part of many pagan religions and spiritual paths. Here we break down the basics of lunar magick into easy-to-digest chunks including the moon’s phases, magical properties, correspondences, and more.
The Magical Basics
The moon seems to grow and then fade over the period of one lunar cycle (one month). This growing, reaching its full potential, and then diminishing is referred to as moon phases. Each moon phase has magical qualities that aid the individual in his or her magic and healing.
Our Connection with the Moon
Why is the moon so important when it comes to magick and spirituality? The moon pulls at the ocean’s tides, and since we’re made up of at least 60% water, it has a profound effect on our lives too. Ever notice how certain people get a little loony on the Full Moon? The terms loony and lunatic stem from the word lunar which means moon. There’s a reason people act differently on the Full Moon, and when we tune into the moon’s phases, we start to notice just how much the moon affects us and our surroundings. It’s also thought to increase paranormal activity, which you can read about here.
The Female Body & The Moon
Just as the moon is reborn, grows, reaches its fullest potential, then wanes again, so do our bodies. For thousands of years, women have noticed their moon cycles (menstruation – the syllable men meaning moon/month) syncing up with the moon’s phases. This is lunar magick at its core. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, so too does the womb. This is why the moon is often associated with the Goddess in forms of neopaganism and Wicca.
Lunar Magick Correspondences
The moon corresponds to certain elements, plants, animals, and gods/goddesses. Feel free to adapt and change to fit your lifestyle, preferences, and needs. Here are some magical correspondences for lunar magick:
Herbal/Plant Moon Correspondences: vervain, moonflower, jasmine, lemon balm, cabbage, camellia, camphor, chickweed, moonwort, gardenia, grape, lemon, passionflower, turnip, potato, pea, cucumber, pear, peach, willow, poppy, mountain ash, mango, wallflower, rowan, cactus
Animal Moon Correspondences: owls, rabbits, wolves, deer, cats, moths, bats, spiders, raccoons, opossum, cows, frogs, dogs, crabs
Deities Moon Correspondences: Selene, Sophia, Thoth, Artemis, Diana, Luna, Blodeuwedd, Man in the Moon, Rabbit in the Moon, Khonsu, Inanna, Hecate, Cerridwen,
Crystal/Stone Moon Correspondences: moonstone, selenite, obsidian, silver, mother-of-pearl, aquamarine, gold beryl, topaz, emerald, clear quartz, coral, pearls
Where to Start with Lunar Magick
Many people don’t know where to start with lunar magick. My first suggestion is to go outside at night and identify the moon’s phase. Do this time and time again until you instinctively know what phase the moon is in. If you can’t see the moon or can’t get outside, you can also use a moon phase app on your phone.
Simple Moon Rituals
Next, start with a simple moon ritual like a cleansing bath on the waning or new moon. Add a few herbs to the water that correspond to the moon (make sure they are safe topically before bathing in them). On the Full Moon, perform a simple candle spell for protection or love, etc. The next time you want to cast a spell or perform a ritual, look up what moon phase is best and perform it then. Lunar magick isn’t complicated and doesn’t take long to learn. After a little while, you’ll notice your emotions and your life corresponds with the moon’s cycles.
Blue Moon
When two moons fall in one calendar month the second is called the blue Moon, and this is the month that we will use for our wishes. It falls in a different month each year, but it is a very powerful moon. The blue moon is always the second of the full moons in the corresponding month. We need to write down aims and goals for the up and coming year. Place them in an envelope and don’t look at them until the next blue moon. Dress your blue moon altar in the colors that correspond to the month it falls into, and place flowers and fruits from that month, also place pictures of things you would like in your life. Stay real here and keep it down to earth.

New Moon
The new moon is a time of initiation and new beginnings. It is the time to plant a seed of what you want to grow in your life. Making a wish, an intention, a promise, or a vow is a common custom. It is believed that as the moon grows, that your intention or goal will too usually by the time the moon completes its cycle and returns full circle to new again.
The new Moon offers us its energy of intention, to rid ourselves of the negative habits in our life. The energy of the new moon aids us in ridding our minds and bodies of toxic thought patterns as well as eliminating toxic substances like excess alcohol, processed foods, caffeine & tobacco usage. Starting a new project, or discipline should be substantially less difficult to stick to when started during the new moon. it's important to come up with a ritual that has meaning for you, instead of trying to follow any set guidelines (unless your part of an established ritual group).  Astrology expert Molly Hall has some wonderful insights as to creating a personalized New Moon Ritual.
Creating a New Moon Ritual
Gather Sacred Supplies:  Your altar is where you collect your sacred objects -- pictures, found objects and the like. Using herbs with healing or symbolic properties adds to your ritual. Stones and crystals are another powerful ally. Candles are magical, and in its form contains all four of the elements. A small journal on hand allows you to keep a record of your intentions.
Preparing for the Ritual: This is the most important part of ritual, since your commitment is the key. Take a ritual bath with sea salt to clear your field of any negative energies. Sage is an herb used to clear a space and make it sacred for ritual.
Light the end of the sage wand and blow on it until there is a smoldering glow. Use it around your own body, and in the space of your ritual. Clear your mind with meditation, using music or just quieting down in your cleared, sacred area.
Grounding: This is something that's important anytime, for staying connected to earth energy. Signs that you're not grounded are mania, nervousness, racing thoughts and the like. Too often we forget to feel the earth under our feet. I've mentioned Starhawk's Grounding Meditation a few times on the site, and her tree grounding exercise is one of my own daily rituals. In a nutshell, it's visualizing the roots going down into the Earth, through the layers, into the core, and then drawing that energy back up through your feet again. It moves through each chakra, coming out the top and down around you. Try this or another variation of grounding before you set new Moon intentions.
Your New Moon Wishes: After you've cleared a sacred space and settled your energy, you're ready to set your intentions. Make a list of what you'd like to draw into your life and Dream Big! The new Moon is a moment to conjure what seems out of reach, and creating the vision is the first step to making it a reality. But these are not just words on paper. As you write them down as intentions, you are committing to doing your part to make them real. Some call it is co-creating, since you're opening to universal energies to set dreams in motion.
Dreams of the Soul: Your intentions come from the longings that keep coming up. In the days leading up to the new Moon, give some thought to those longings, and see what images, dreams and streams of thought come up. Use symbolic associations to go along with your intentions. Weave in the element for the new Moon and think about the houses and planets that are affected by it. For an earth new Moon, for example, you might plant seeds that represent your intention. Rituals are a way to work with universal energies, and draw attention to the particular life lessons, or arena (house, planet, etc.) that it illuminates for you.
Symbolic Acts: Here's where you get to be creative. If your intentions are to write a book, or broadcast your ideas out to the world, tie them to a helium balloon and send them off. Write them on a stick and offer it to the fire. To open to love, put lavender and a rose quartz in a small pouch, along with the qualities you're seeking. If you're inspired, add a symbolic act to your intention-setting ritual.
Keep them Alive: A big part of success with new Moon intentions is what comes after. Find ways to keep them in the front of your awareness. Put them in a visible spot or keep them in your wallet. Make notes in your journal about your progress. At the full Moon, find ways to take action on those intentions, and celebrate any signs of change.
 Waxing Crescent Moon
During the days that follow a new moon, it’s time to anchor into your intentions. Focus on one thing you want to bring into existence during this lunar cycle. To that end, practice visualizations and affirmations at this time. Write your new moon intention out clearly and succinctly and read it daily.
When the moon is "waxing" it appears to be growing, the period from the dark to full moon phases. It's magnetic energy assists with bringing things to out. This entire waxing period is the best time to work with constructive magic, or magic that builds things/brings things to us.
The waxing crescent is the best time for magic on yourself (or on the subject) pertaining to new beginnings, such as starting a new project or making plans for the future. If you're looking to conjure energies into your life such as a more positive attitude, more patience, more understanding in your relationship, this is the perfect timing for such goals. When you want to cast spells for self-improvement, such as if you want to improve your psychic abilities, to absorb the information in a new class, or bring out your inner beauty, this is the time to do it. Artists or anyone artistic/creative will find this the best time to cast spells or perform meditations that will bring inspiration and passion into your work.
Set an Intention and Tell the Moon
Many people will tell you to set your intention during the new moon, but I think the first days of the waxing phase are excellent for goal setting. I’ll use the restful introspective energy of the new moon to let my ideas marinate. Then when the powerhouse energy of the waxing moon comes thundering in, I’m ready to commit to my intention.
Once I have a goal in mind, I’ll perform a waxing moon spell around it. Your ritual can include anything you want, but if you need ideas, here’s what I do.
Waxing Moon Intention Spell
Go outside or near a window on the first day of the waxing moon. (This happens about three nights after the new moon phase.)
Write an intention (or a word that represents your intention) on a bay leaf and hold it between your palms.
Thank the waxing moon for being present for your ritual. I do this by holding my hands up towards the moon (with the bay leaf still pressed between my palms).
When you start to feel the current of energy from the waxing moon, bring your hands to your heart (still holding the bay leaf).
Spend a few minutes thinking about something that will bring up the feelings you associate with your intention. For example, you want to call in romantic love, so you visualize yourself getting asked out while you’re sipping a cold brew at your favorite coffee shop.
Next, open your eyes and light the bay leaf on fire. Do this in a fireproof container so you stay safe. Wait for the bay leaf to burn completely.
Watch that intention float up to the moon carried by the smoke.
Trust that the moon has received your intention and that it’s already helping you manifest it.
Thank the moon, and your spell is complete.
Come Up with a Manifesting Plan
After you’ve shared your intention with the moon, start planning how you’ll create opportunities for your intention to manifest. If you’ve decided to manifest a new job with this waxing moon, brainstorm some actions you can take to align your energy with that of a new job. You could apply for jobs online, ask friends for leads, carve out time every day to visualize your job or look for internship opportunities.
After you have some ideas, get out your calendar and mark the last day of the waxing moon. (This will be the night before the full moon.) Plan what days you’re going to do each action. Shoot for one action a day towards your goal—even if it’s just a quick spell before you go to bed.
Finally, decide on how you’ll celebrate the full moon. This can be dinner and a movie, tickets to a concert, or a relaxing bath with some wine. Pick something special that you wouldn’t normally give yourself. Whether or not you stick to your waxing moon plan, enjoy your celebration. You and the moon deserve it!
Let’s say your intention is something huge like writing a novel. You’re probably not going to accomplish that during the fourteen days of the waxing moon. It will likely take you at least a few moons to bang out the first draft. If that’s your goal, plan the action you’ll take during this current waxing moon. You could commit to outlining a chapter a day for fourteen days. Or maybe you’ll choose to wake up an hour early to write. After the waxing phase is over, you can think up some ways to use the waning moon energy for your writing project.
(By the way, if your goal IS to write a novel, put your laptop or writing notebook by your window so the moon can shine on it. The waxing moon is great for cultivating creativity.)
If You Need Clarity, Ask the Moon
The moon has been around almost as long as the earth has. It knows things. It can help you if you don’t know exactly what to manifest. You can access the moon’s ancient wisdom by simply asking.
Take a moment each night during this moon phase to close your eyes and send a question up to the moon. Something like, “What should I focus on tomorrow?” or “What should I create tomorrow?” will work just fine.
Imagine your words flying out of your mind towards the moon like a comet. Then open your journal and spend five- or ten-minutes writing whatever comes to mind. You’ll likely get your answer.
Ask for an Unexpected Gift
I do this every night during the waxing moon and it’s brought me so many crazy wonderful things—a new project, an idea for a story, a random check in the mail, a flirty text from someone cute. It makes me smile just thinking about all my moon gifts.
Try it for yourself. You’ll notice quickly that when you work with the moon’s abundant energy, magic happens in the most surprising ways with very little effort. There are two reasons for this. The first is the moon is already putting off a strong manifesting energy. It wants to send blessings your way. The second reason is the moon knows what you want. It’s been shining down on you all your life night after night. You can trust the moon to send some love your way.
Let the Waxing Moon Charge Your Magical Tools
The moon will charge anything its light touches with whatever energy it’s holding. For fourteen days, the waxing moon’s light will be sending out lots of joyful manifesting energy. Set out whatever you’ll need for your manifesting magic, and let the moon do its thing while you sleep.
These tools can include water, magical oils, herbs, crystals, incense, written incantations, journal entries, candles, magical card decks, or your cauldron. The moon won’t discriminate. Whatever you chose to leave out overnight, the moon will make sure it’s already to go!
You don’t have to make a big deal about doing this. For me, it’s like plugging in my cell phone before bed. It just takes a minute, and I go to bed knowing my tools will be fully charged in the morning.
Take a Moon Bath
In addition to charging your magical tools, you can charge yourself by taking a moon bath. To do this, take a blanket or a lawn chair, and sit outside in a place where you get a nice view of the moon. Hold out your arms and let the moon’s light wash over you. Feel its manifesting power as it lands on your skin and seeps into your body. Breathe in the light of the moon. Smell it. Open your mouth and allow the light to enter your body that way. What does it taste like? Can you feel its power?
While you’re soaking in moonbeams, take a moment to admire the moon’s beauty. Notice the light and dark spots from the way the sun’s light hits the moon’s surface. Look for shapes or figures in the moon. Observe any feelings that come up as you’re doing this.
Also, you don’t have to sit. You can dance, jump around, or lay down. Let yourself be wild under the moon if you want. I feel a juicy sort of energy when I do this like I’m connected to all other witches from the past, present, and future.
Maybe you want to go camping and sleep under the moon. Maybe you’d like to cuddle with your lover, your cat or your family under the moon. Experiment with everything you can do in the moonlight. There’s no limit.
My favorite thing to do when I’m taking a moon bath is to revel in the abundance of the universe. I’m reminded that there are more than enough stars, more than enough sky and more than enough moonlight for everyone in the world. What a great energy to bring to manifesting spells!
Invite the Moon to Make Magic with You
Go outside (or by a window if the weather’s bad) and actually perform your magic in the light of the moon. This could be a meditation, a spell or a tarot card reading. It’s a beautiful way for you and the moon to co-create together.
Be curious about this. Notice any unusual feelings that come up during your magic and journal about them. Keep track of the magical results you see. Are you manifesting faster? Did you feel a burst of energy when you lit your candle? Do money spells work better under the moon? What about love spells? Once you get familiar with the waxing moon energy, you’ll start to know what spells are especially potent when you team up with the moon.
 1st Quarter Moon
The Moon is waxing (increasing in light), and 50% to 75% illuminated.  This phase usually begins the 7th day after New Moon and continues until the 10th or 11th. It will be about 7.5 days until Full Moon (from the beginning of this phase).  This is the 3rd in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The First Quarter Phase begins when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 90º and continues until the angle reaches 135º (when the Gibbous Phase will begin). This phase is the first half of the 1st Quarter (when the cycle is divided into 4 quarters rather than 8 phases). First Quarter Moon rises around mid-day and sets around midnight. She is brightly visible the first half of the night and can often be spotted during daylight hours in the afternoon.  The name First (or 1st) Quarter is used in both astrology/magick and astronomy.
The First Quarter, or Waxing Half Moon, is the time when energies are most conducive to attraction. Unlike the Waxing Crescent, which is best for going within and bringing things out, this is the best time for magic that attempts to draw things outside of yourself to you.
Use this time for spells and meditations meant to attract things you want in your life, such as money, protection or success. It's also an ideal time for attracting people into your life, such as friends, lovers and clients. If you're looking for an animal companion or have one that you want to bond with, this is a good time to perform the workings.
If you're looking for a lost object, or house hunting, etc., this is a good time to perform spells for success in that area to help you bring that which you most desire into manifestation.
How it effects your life
The deceptive imagery of fragility and hesitancy in the waxing Moon are long gone. She is brilliantly lit, growing rapidly, and visible not only a good portion of the night, but in day as well. Strong and prominent, she victoriously casts her light, and casts her spell of confidence and success. Yet she has not reached Full Moon, we are only halfway through the waxing cycle. She has achieved brilliant light, high visibility, and solid form - but far from reaching the goal. She has simply passed the milestone of uncertainty; strength and momentum abound.
Our visions and inspirations, mere vague yet exciting notions at New Moon have taken shape and gained momentum along with the Moon. Plans are becoming solid and real; our inner visions are coming to the attention of others. Excitement and enthusiasm are returning - things are happening, the vision is manifesting. We are shining brightly now, but, like the Moon, we still have a long way to go. Past the details and glitches of the Crescent Phase, we may be facing more real challenges. However, these challenges have a way of exciting and stimulating, because we are also beginning to see some real effects of our efforts; there is something solid to fight for.
How to make the most of this phase
The First Quarter Phase is often referred to as 'crisis of action' because now is the time to move forward. The vision was born during New Moon, it faced the stresses of development during Crescent Moon, and now it's ready to be put into action. Move forward, build momentum, and take action. The question is how? We've defined our goal and developed our resources. Now we need to refine the plan and act on it. We are beginning to see progress, take it and run with it. But don't run blindly, things are propelled forward with great momentum, and the key is to know where you're going, and how you'll get there, so you can make the most of this momentum.
There is a feeling of success, and a sense of accomplishment in the air. Yet the goal has not yet been reached, success has not been achieved. Many people will feel a surge in confidence (or ego) during the First Quarter Phase. It's all too easy to think things are going well, you are working hard, the goal is within reach. However, if you don't pay attention, and make sure all is going well, and that you are working hard in the right direction, that goal which felt so close could slip away before you even realize it. This is a time it's important to be sure of yourself (not only your actions) deep down. Confident and successful feelings based on the beginnings of accomplishments can be great. But they can be fragile. On some level we know it's pre-mature to think we've won the battle before it's over. But things are progressing so fast we feel it anyway - until someone or something points out how far we still have to go. That's why it's important to be aware of how far we've come, and how far we have left. Be realistic, make a plan, tell yourself you can do it – and do it. Don't set yourself up for a fall.
The Moon is in solid form and shining brightly. The energy level is high; so is the level of activity. The First Quarter Moon Phase is what we make of it. In the Crescent Phase, we encountered problems to be solved and things to be done. In this phase we take deliberate action. This is an excellent time for planning, structuring, making decisions and striving for efficiency and productivity. It's usually easier to develop confidence during First Quarter, so if you have confidence and self-esteem issues, actively work on them. This also makes it a good time for taking on difficult or challenging projects. This is a good time to begin a health or exercise program, organize, remodel, change routines - whatever will get things on track and moving in the right direction.
Take a decisive and assertive approach. This isn't the time to 'decide not to decide'. Things are happening, probably faster than you realize, and you want to shape the way they develop. Push for progress and be quick to take action. There is a lot of energy and forward momentum, tap into it and get things done. Remember, that others are feeling the same lunar energy you are. There is an active, confident, and assertive quality to the mood of most people. It's probably best to avoid conflicts, when possible, unless you want a confrontation. When you find yourself at odds with others, try for compromise, but remember the saying "If you act like a doormat, people will walk all over you". This is truer now than during any other lunar phase. Independence and individuality are important elements during this phase. Do your own thing, and do it well? Don't interfere in the progress of others, but don't let them interfere in yours either.
When planning important projects, you need to begin then within the growing portion of the cycle. Any phase during the waxing cycle is appropriate, but each brings a different mood and energies to your project. The First Quarter Phase is good for fast paced and highly active projects. Things began now tending to be more demanding, and perhaps a bit more challenging, than things began during the earlier phases, but also more structured and dynamic. Planning, structuring, direction and decisiveness will be necessary - this isn't the time for beginning passive or casual undertakings. This is the time for dynamic, active projects - for example, the most recent incorporation of Microsoft, as well as the initial release of the Windows platform were during First Quarter Phases.
In ongoing plans and projects, remember this is the time for action and decisions. If you have things that have been in the 'planning stages' for too long, this is the time to get them off the ground. In projects that seem to be at a standstill, give them an active boost. Look over the situation, and see what changes need to be made. Make decisions and take action. Look for ways you can manage your projects better, take control of your life - anything that falls within the realm of structured, assertive, or active progress.
 Waxing Gibbous Moon
The Waxing Gibbous is still a time for constructive magic, best used towards 'reeling in' that which you've been working for already. If you started a project and it's floundering, stalled, if you're at the point when the thing you're working for is coming into the home stretch and you need some extra energy to bring it home, the Waxing Gibbous will give it a boost.
This phase is a great energy for renewing your strength, will and determination to see your efforts through. If you are giving in to temptation on your diet, working hard toward something and feeling burnt out or are at the point where you're getting lazy and distracted from completing your tasks, give yourself a power boost during the Waxing Gibbous.
The Moon is waxing (increasing in light) and 75% to 100% illuminated.  This phase begins the 10th or 11th day after New Moon and continues until Full Moon. It is about 3.5 days until Full Moon (at the beginning of this phase).  This is the 4th in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The Gibbous Phase begins when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 135º and continues until the angle reaches 180º (when the Full Moon Phase will begin). This phase is the second half of the 1st Quarter (when the cycle is divided into 4 quarters rather than 8 phases). The Gibbous Moon rises in the afternoon and sets in the early pre-dawn hours of the morning.  She is visible from Moonrise until Moonset.  This is the phase when it's easiest to spot her in daylight hours.  One thing that can be confusing, is you will see reference to both waxing and waning Gibbous Moon.  This is typically an astronomical reference, in astrology and magick usually only waxing is called gibbous.  What astronomers call waning gibbous, astrologers call disseminating.
How it effects your life
The Moon is so nearly full, you may have to look twice, or even consult an astrological calendar as we approach the end of the Gibbous Phase. She is brilliant, nearly round, illuminating the darkness of night.  Truly a breathtaking sight.  Her energy is so strong you can feel it as you gaze at the silvery disc overhead. She is nearly full.  Nearly, but not quite.  It almost seems as if she is poised, yet hesitating, taking a deep breath before her big night.  With time and patience, she proceeds along her path.  It will come.  It will be soon.
If we bring our lives into rhythm with the natural cycles, we find ourselves following the path of the Moon.  We are poised and ready, the goal is so near we can almost touch it, almost reach it.  Almost, yet something is stopping us.  We just don't feel prepared, or it isn't exactly coming together as it should. There is one more detail, or one missing element.  We encounter a last-minute glitch.  Something isn't quite right; something isn't quite ready.  So very close, but not quite, not yet.  Do we give up, after working this long and hard, after pouring so much energy into it in the First Quarter Phase?  Not if we are following the Moon's path; not if we are following her example and flowing with her energy.  We continue, certain that it will happen, it will come, and it will be soon.
How to make the most of this phase
Look at the Moon and feel the Moon.  Draw from, join in her strength and certainty.  The Gibbous Phase holds a great deal of power and potential.  It may take some patience and determination to tap into it.  We find ourselves at the precarious point of being very close to a goal. The vision born at New moon is nearly materialized.  We may think we've made it.  Then something comes up, but don't look at it as a bad thing.  This phase is about refining, fine-tuning, and tuning in. What you have begun may seem ready, but it can be better.  Challenges, really, are always opportunities in disguise.  But this is truer than ever during the Gibbous Phase.  When you find yourself encountering glitches in your plans, realize that it is fortunate they were discovered at this stage, and most likely the result will be improving and enriching your endeavors.
Impatience is so strong you can feel it in the air during Gibbous Phase. Yet patience is one of your best allies.  However, this isn't the sit quietly and wait type patience.  This phase call for having the patience to do things right, analyze, refine, strengthen, perfect…  There is far too much to do for idly waiting, or for rushing it too fast.  Be careful, be certain, take criticism as constructive (even if it's not intended that way).   Just watch the Moon, taking her time, developing the perfect form to create a spectacular display when the moment has come, and not before.  Follow her lead, and as always, you won't go wrong.
The vision was born at New Moon.  It has developed, strengthened through the phases and made great leaps forward during First Quarter Moon.  Now it is on the brink of manifestation.  If there was ever a bad time to give up, this is it!  Work on solidifying your plans, and double check everything.  Take advantage of the analytical and refining tendencies of this phase for anything that you need to revise.  This is a good time for any kind of precision work or reviewing and fine-tuning.
The Gibbous Phase is a good time for reviving what has been let slide. If you have (good) habits and routines you've strayed from, this is the time to work on getting them back. Skills and knowledge can get foggy too. If you have things you’ve learned, but haven't studied in a while, or skills you haven't practiced in some time, use this phase to 'brush-up'.  You will find it comes back more easily than you think.  This can also be a good time for developing natural talents.  If you have flair for art (as an example), but have never tried to fine-tune your skills, this is a good time for it.
Though we have nearly reached Full Moon, the light is still increasing, we are still in the waxing, growing portion of the cycle.  It is still an appropriate time to start a project or launch something new.  Unless you want to encounter the resistance of trying to promote growth in something with ingrained diminishing tendencies, this is your last chance (or wait a couple weeks before the next cycle).  Therefore, most often, the kinds of things we begin during this phase ore those we have been procrastinating on, rather than things that were planned and targeted for launching in this phase.  If you don't want new beginnings during waning Moon, and haven't got around to starting it yet, it's now or never.  Not really never, but you'll have to wait a couple of weeks.
We have a tendency (it's human nature) to easily avoid and procrastinate, but if we're running out of time, we suddenly become ready and impatient. You can call it synchronicity; you didn't plan it this way, yet this kind of energy fits well with the gibbous phase.  As Full Moon is so very near, there is a feeling of impatience in the air.  As so many things are almost complete, but not quite ready, there is a natural "mad rush' of sorts.  So, if you find yourself frantically scrambling to launch something that you hadn't got around to, yet suddenly can't wait for, don't feel that you've gotten out of tune.  However, do inject some logic before you get carried away.  Ask yourself a few questions.  Can it wait until the next cycle?  If so, are you actually ready; how much could it benefit from more preparation time?
Like the other phases the Gibbous Phase will bring its own, unique energy and inclination to thing began now (whether this is when you planned the launch, or it was a last-minute impulse).  Things began during the Gibbous Phase are likely to need refining, and fine-tuning.  There is a tendency to perpetually seek improvement.  This is a good time for launching things that are really a rough idea, the refining, perfecting, and tweaking will come quite naturally.  It's also a good time for beginning generally analytical, or highly detail-oriented projects.
 Full Moon
When the Earth is caught between the moon and the sun, the result is the Full Moon bearing the most powerful energies of the lunar cycle. The Full Moon is often seen by people as 'all purpose'—its energies are prismatic in that it flows into all areas and needs, be it constructive or destructive.
Even more so than the Dark Moon, the Full Moon is a time you would utilize for extra power when you're facing very difficult challenges. This is not just for minor mundane tasks, such as looking for the energy to reorganize your closet or trying to clear negativity out of the house after an argument; this is a time to reserve for those important things in your life that need major changes or major boosts.
While you can plan spells for anything, utilize this energy for your priorities that really matter in your life, like if you need to win a court case, or find a new job with better pay to prevent you from losing your home.
Magics and meditations revolving around spirituality, psychic development, dreams and divination are particularly well times for the Full Moon.
The Moon is now waning (decreasing in light), and 100% to 75% illuminated. This phase lasts about 3.5 days following Full Moon. It will be about 14.75 days until the next New Moon (from the beginning of this phase). This is the 5th in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The Full Moon Phase begins at Full Moon, when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 180º, and continues until the angle reaches 225º (when the Disseminating Moon Phase will begin). This phase is the first half of the Full Moon Quarter. The Full Moon rises at Sunset and sets at Sunrise. She is visible throughout the night.  The name Full Moon is used in both astrology/magick and astronomy.
How it effects your life
Half the Lunar cycle has been spent striving for this point. The Full Moon, in all her splendid glory shines brilliantly in the night sky, the earth glows with her divine silver light. The shadows seem vibrant and alive. It is a breathtaking sight, enlightening and mysterious. The darkness of night is illuminated, yet there is much we sense and cannot see. The light of the Moon, along with her power, has reached a peak. We see it, we feel it. The level of energy is higher on Full Moon than any other time of the month.
The Sun illuminates the Moon; she transforms and reflects his light upon the Earth. The illuminated Earth transforms and reflects her light, producing a mystical, silvery glow. These energies of illumination and reflection are ingrained into the phase of Full Moon. We reflect upon our lives and selves, we see more deeply into our own souls, as well as others. We are drawn to the illusive and mysterious.
The power of the Moon is unmistakable, tangible. We see it, feel it, and sense it. We feel our own power, and the power of the world around us. The moon is the natural astrological ruler of emotions. When she is riding high, so are our emotions. We aren't happy, we're elated; we aren't mad, we're furious; we aren't interested, we're excited; we aren't sad, we're depressed. This is a powerful time, of excess and extremes, which can manifest in a positive or negative way.
How to make the most of this phase
Full Moon is one of the most powerful and influential times in the natural cycle, and probably the most widely accepted (even by many skeptics) proof of astrological influence on our lives. Everyone has seen and felt the effects, firsthand. There is an out-of-control tendency that can make it difficult to harness this energy. The first step is awareness. Don't enter this phase unaware of and out of touch with your emotions, or you likely won't know what to do when the emotional high tide comes. Make sure you have used the waxing phases to learn, grow, build and structure. If you approach Full Moon feeling like your life is spinning out of control, it just might.
Although we are only halfway through the entire Lunar Cycle, there is a feeling of culmination. A goal has been reached. The building, evolving, waxing light of the past couple of weeks has manifested. And what a spectacular manifestation it is! You will find things you have worked on and built coming together at this time. Remember the vague visions of New Moon? Now illuminated, we can see them clearly. If they have survived, and you have put the effort into them, they are now a manifestation. Realistically, few goals are reached, or projects completed in a couple of weeks’ times. However, there is a sense of completion and manifestation in some form. Perhaps the idea is just becoming a solid plan, or one phase of a project is completed. Whatever the case, even if it seems to be only in your own perspective, things are more real and solid. Something has been achieved. If you have been going in the wrong directions, you will see the results of that be manifested into solid form as well. Preparation and the right mind frame are key in successful, productive use of this notorious Moon Phase.
The Moon has reached her peak; from the moment of Full Moon the light will begin decreasing. The period of growth and time for beginnings is past. This is the most active period of change. This time can be useful for changing or breaking habits and routines. Bring things to an end, where needed. This is also a highly creative time, with endless poems, songs, and works of art using Full Moon as a subject, demonstrating the point. Make use of the creative influence for artistic endeavors, or creative thinking. Just be careful of coming to firm decisions fight now (especially on the day of Full Moon), as logic isn't necessarily a strong point right now.
There are many dark corners in our lives, and ourselves, both small and large scale. In 'dark corners' I don't necessarily mean negative things, these are (at least partially) hidden or unnoticed things. With Full Moon, comes light, allowing us to see in those normally invisible, dark corners - just as the brilliant Moonlight allows us to see in the normally dark night. Use this time to take a closer look at things, see hidden potential, look for mistakes, and find opportunities. You can also get a clear insight into yourself, as your emotions are much stronger than usual.
As energy and emotions run high, arguments and conflicts are more likely at Full Moon. Although often difficult, compromise is important. In astrological terms, this is an opposition; the Sun is in the opposite position of the Moon. We often find ourselves completely at odds with someone else. It's important to remember, that this can be quite valuable, useful or informative. Opposite can manifest in different ways. When you look in a mirror, the image you see reflected is opposite the actual image yet reflects it accurately. When you encounter opposition, ask yourself if, in some way, it reflects aspects of yourself or your situations you have not been seeing. Other times, these conflicts can provide valuable insight or information. True, absolute opposites each have elements the other is missing. When you encounter opposition ask yourself if this person or event is giving you information and understanding that you have overlooked and could make your approach completer and more balanced.
It is no longer a good time for beginnings, the flow of energy is shifting. Full Moon is the balance point, or imbalance as it may be, in between waxing and waning. She is neither growing nor shrinking, she is full 100% illuminated. For an instant, a fleeting moment, there is total fulfillment, completion, achievement, and illumination. After that moment, the light is waning, slowly and gradually. This phase carries the energy of the moment of Full Moon, as well as the first gradual steps into the waning portion of the cycle. This is a good time for completing long-term projects or completing a phase of them.
This can be a good time for public displays, drawing attention, or presentations. There is a high energy, and highly emotional quality to Full Moon, so don't draw attention to potentially controversial things, unless you want a controversy. This is a time for putting on a show and getting a dramatic response.
The other, quite obvious factor in the influences this phase brings is, of course, light. It's a good time for evaluation, as things are illuminated figuratively, as well as literally. As we enter the waning phase, there is necessary decreasing and endings. Take a good look at your important projects and plans. Where are you stretching yourself, or your resources too thin? This is the time to begin 'weeding out' the unnecessary. There is a focus on excesses right now, and if you can step back and be objective (so that you aren't inclined to go to excesses) it is a good time for spotting excesses.
 Waning Gibbous Moon
After the Full Moon peaks, we enter the waning half of the lunar cycle. Waning energies repel rather than attract, so it's a good time to begin working on spells to get rid of things.
Minor banishing’s can begin with the Waning Gibbous. This is a good time for general cleansings to upkeep your home, office, garden or any of your personal spaces, etc., to keep things from mounting up. This is also a good time to cleanse any personal objects you may have, such as your jewelry or magical tools. Think of this more like routine dusting-- there's no major build-up, you're just trying to keep things clear to prevent problems.
If you have something for which you need closure, or if you're ready to end something in your life (such as an unfulfilling relationship or unsatisfying business venture), this is a good time for spells to bring things to their fruition.
As for meditations and divination, rather than looking to the future or on to new things, it's a good time for introspection. Where have your previous attitudes and actions brought you? What things in your life have been affecting you most? Are you happy with where you are? Do you need to make any attitude or behavior adjustments?
The Moon is waning (decreasing in light), and 75% to 50% illuminated. It begins the 3rd or 4th day after Full Moon and lasts into the 7th day. It is about 11 days until New Moon (from the beginning of this phase). This is the 6th in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The Disseminating Phase begins when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 225º and continues until the angle reaches 270º (when the Third Quarter Moon Phase will begin). This phase is the second half of the Full Moon Quarter. The Disseminating Moon rises in late evening, a couple of hours after Sunset, and sets in late midmorning, a couple of hours after Sunrise. She is easily visible from Moonrise until Moonset. In astrology and magick this phase is called disseminating; however, astronomers typically use the name Waning Gibbous.
How it effects your life
The Full Moon has passed, though just barely. She still lights up the night sky, and the darkness of earth, although she is visibly waning. The waning phase is primarily about endings and letting go, in contrast to the beginnings and growth of the waxing phase. It's time to begin letting go, to realize that a transformation is needed before there can be further growth.
We have made the transition from waxing to waning, like stepping through a doorway, and now it's time to see what awaits us. In fact, throughout the busy cycle this is the first time we have really stopped to look around. We begin to see where we stand and notice our surroundings and our place in them. The disseminating phase is integrative. Our awareness of others, their needs and goals, their effect on us is heightened. We begin to see where our knowledge may be useful to others, and their knowledge may be useful to us. The visions began at New Moon, the fulfillment gained at Full Moon, the experiences in-between have begun transforming into wisdom and understanding. We are compelled to share it. We absorb what others have to share. Communication is vital.
How to make the most of this phase
Following the natural path of the Moon, it is time to take a step back. Not a step backwards in progress, but step back from situations you are too close to, look at them objectively. From the darkness of New Moon, she has progressed, grown, increased to the peak of Full Moon. Now she is gracefully and slowly slipping into the shadows. She is re-visiting the darkness. Dark does not mean evil or bad. Knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and subconscious all reside in the quiet depths of the shadows. Begin turning your attention to things of this nature.
This is only the beginning of the waning portion of the Lunar Cycle. We begin by seeking understanding. At Full Moon, things are illuminated, accomplished, goals are reached, ideas are solidified. Now we know. But do we understand? The mind is busy, sharing and gathering information, racing with thoughts. This is the time to process those thoughts, bits of information, memories of experiences into wisdom - a valuable tool you can utilize for the rest of this cycle, and all that follow it.
The sharing of information is one of the critical elements of and uses for the Disseminating Phase. If you have a message to get out, now is the time. If others are talking (about something relevant) listen to what they have to say. Study, learn, and absorb ideas and information. The tendency for sharing and interaction is not limited to information, although that is its primary influence. This can be an excellent time for socializing, teaching children to share, charity work. It's perfect for attending (or teaching) classes and workshops, making friends whom you connect to on an intellectual level, or exploring other cultures. Learn and diversify, keep an open mind.
This phase is usually a busy time (at least mentally), but in the rush to share, gain, and digest ideas don't forget that the general tendency of the waning phase is decreasing and letting go. This is a good time for breaking habits, changing routines, and weeding out ideas which aren't useful. Be open to change, as this phase is a beginning of a transformation. Ask yourself what you need to transform.
Now that we are in the waning phase it is no longer favorable to begin projects for growth and increase, because the natural tendency is decreasing. The disseminating phase has a strong focus on information. If you want to get a message out, 'spread the word' this is a perfect time. It's also a good time for gathering information. Think ahead to what you have planned for the next waxing moon and do your research. If you are in the middle of a big project or a difficult/confusing situation or point in your life, ask yourself what you need to know. Information is a powerful tool, and if you don't have all the facts, or don’t fully understand them use this time to remedy the situation. By the same merit if your side of the story hasn't been heard - tell it.
The Disseminating Phase also marks the beginning of transformation. Think change. Even in things we want to progress and grow, the balance of waning is essential. Do you have a stalled project, or feel stuck in a rut? Then something has to change, opening new doors, giving new options. Something has to end making room for new growth or allowing it to be 'reborn' in a different and better way.
 3rd Quarter Moon
The Third Quarter, or the Waning Half-Moon, is the perfect timing for dealing with obstacles or leaping over hurtles that might cause you to stumble on your way. Whenever you've been working toward something, and there's a roadblock in your path, the timing of this moon phase offers appropriate energies for helping you burst through it.
Temptations are the number one thing I like to deal with during the Third Quarter. If I'm finding that I often want to cheat on my diet or lay in bed rather than get up and do my exercise or watch TV and fool around on the internet rather than working, I banish that temptation with a spell.
Another good use of this moon phase's energy is in aiding with transitions, whether these are transitions that you have to make or simply want to make in your life. It can help smooth out any wrinkles that might cause snags as you go on your way.
The Moon is waning (decreasing in light), and 50% to 25% illuminated.  This phase usually begins the 7th day after Full Moon and continues until the 10th or 11th. It will be about 7.5 days until New Moon (from the beginning of this phase).  This is the 6th in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The Last Quarter Phase begins when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 270º and continues until the angle reaches 315º (when the Disseminating Moon Phase will begin). This phase is the first half of the 3rd Quarter (when the cycle is divided into 4 quarters rather than 8 phases).  The Last Quarter Moon rises around midnight and sets mid-day.  She is visible from Moonrise, until Moonset.  Both astrology/magick and astronomy may use either Last Quarter, Waning Last Quarter, or Third Quarter for this phase. Third Quarter is used more often in astronomy than in astrology/magick.
How it effects your life
Once again, we have reached the balance of light.  The Moon begins this phase exactly half illuminated, but waning.  She is slipping into the darkness, slowly but surely.  Each night we see another sliver of light gone.  She still illuminates the night, but gradually the shadows grow stronger and the light grows weaker.  It is a time of transition, transformation, and evolution.  There is a restless, sometimes uneasy feeling.  Instinctively we feel that something is happening, something is changing.
In the First Quarter Phase we feel the energy of waxing and growing become quite potent at the light overtakes the dark.  We have now reached the opposite point, as the dark overtakes the light and we feel the energy of waning and decreasing with equal potency. However, the darkness is the quiet, the internal, the letting go, the understanding - it is a more subtle energy. The mysteries of the shadows are now more alluring than the discoveries of the light.  The energy is deep and powerful, but not so easy to decipher as the extroverted and illuminating energy we felt in the First Quarter.
How to make the most of this phase
Half-light, half dark.  We are looking back and looking ahead.  Often, we find ourselves at cross-roads during the Last Quarter Phase, sometimes trying to (or needing to) take both roads at once.  Things began early in the phase are coming to fruition.  There are things that still need to be done, perhaps another big push to finish up.  Maybe they should be continued or revived.  It's decision time.  Then, there is the question of where to from here.  What will replace things that have been finished?  What will be started in the next phase?  Again, decision time.
Look back: where have you been, and what have you done?  Look ahead:  where are you going, and what will you do?  This is a time of change, as we are beginning to form plans for the future, realizing the repercussions of the past, and deciding what we will (or must) continue, and bring with us.  This isn't a time to dodge responsibility and avoid decisions.  We often find ourselves facing mistakes we have made and receiving credit for what we have archived.  We become aware of what is finished or needs to be. We've been gathering wisdom, contemplating change.  Now we begin to figure out what to do with what we have, and don't have.
The Quarter Moon Phases, both first and last, are times of balance followed by direction.  This one is vastly different from the First Quarter, however.  This is a good time to break bad habits and change routines. Sometimes the more stubborn habits are easier to break now than in the Disseminating Phase.  There is sometimes a vague feeling of chaos in our lives around this time.  Be careful not to let things spin out of control, but don't be too concerned. It's natural, this is a turning point and there are probably many things going on simultaneously.   Don't let yourself slip into bad habits, and not do what has to be done.  However, don't push yourself too hard either.  Rest and contemplation are integral to the entire waning phase.
The Last Quarter Phase is a good time for taking care of details.  Do things you've been putting off.  Clean out the closet, finish up some paperwork. Work on wrapping things up, and deal with those 'odds and ends' you've been neglecting.  It's a good time to organize, prioritize, streamline, and weed out. Clean up clutter, throw away things you don't need and make room for those 'homeless' things laying around.
This can be an important point in long-term projects and goals. This is a time for making the hard decisions and implementing serious change.  What needs to be eliminated?  If you are have come to a point where you must choose one of two (or more) directions, this is a good time to make your choice.  Now is the time for re-structuring and re-considering plans.  Take a hard look at what has and hasn't worked, make use of information you've gathered.  This is a time of endings, but not always eliminating things.
This is a good time for finishing or beginning the final stage of something. If you have a project near completion, it can be a good time to take the necessary steps to finish it; make time and room for something new.
Mistakes made along the way may, and problems you've encountered be catching up with you.  Don't ignore them or give up on what you've been trying to do.  See what there is to be learned, and how they may be avoided in the future.  Implement change where needed or use this time to figure out what change is needed. Take an honest look at projects, or things in your life that seem to be going downhill.  Decide if it's worth pursuing or not.  There is a difference in giving up, depressed, frustrated, and illogical or thinking it through and deciding that it's not worth continuing with. Decide whether you're ending the goal or the plan.  If you're ending the plan, but the goal is still worth striving for, consider a new start, a different approach, in the coming Lunar Cycle.  If you're ending the goal, do what is needed to wrap it up, and start thinking ahead.  Consider the possibilities opened by the time and resources you're freeing up.
 Waning Crescent Moon
If you need to clear your life and home of negativity, stress, strife, chaos, etc., now is the time to do it. The Waning Crescent, as it approaches the Dark Moon phase, it suitable for stronger banishing than at any other time of the waning moon phases. Get rid of whatever has been plaguing you—anything you find to be seriously annoying, frustrating or concerning (save things that are serious threats for that Dark Moon).
If you need things to end—not just to finish up and end, but things that no longer serve you that you need to just stop in their tracks-- this moon phase is a good time to do it. Dropping a hopeless project, relationship, friendship, etc. is best done at this time. This is a good time to cast a spell for anything for which you wish to bring about a swift and benign ending.
The Moon is waning (decreasing in light) and 75% to 0% illuminated. This phase begins the 10th or 11th day after Full Moon and continues until New Moon. It is about 3.5 days until New Moon (at the beginning of this phase). This is the 7th in the 8 phases of the Lunar month. The Balsamic Phase begins when the Sun/Moon angle reaches 315º and continues until the angle reaches 0º (when the New Moon Phase will begin). This phase is the second half of the 3rd Quarter (when the cycle is divided into 4 quarters rather than 8 phases). The Balsamic Moon rises is early morning, before dawn and sets in late afternoon. Early in this phase is visible in pre-dawn twilight; a thin silver crescent softly growing in the eastern sky. By the end of this phase she has disappeared, as we approach the next lunar cycle. This phase is called Balsamic, Dark Moon, and Waning Crescent. In astrology/magick the term waning crescent is rarely used; it is by far the most common astronomical name. Dark Moon and Balsamic are commonly used in astrology/magick.
How it effects your life
The darkness is nearly complete. We begin the Balsamic Phase with just a thin sliver of light - you may catch a glimpse in early morning - and by the end of the phase, darkness is complete. We are approaching New Moon; this is the last waning phase. She has withdrawn into the darkness, leaving the night wrapped in shadows. Disappearing, she is resting, preparing for the next Lunar Cycle. As we follow her example, follow her path, we do the same.
This is a time of quiet contemplation. We withdraw into the shadowy depths of thought and emotion, resting, reflecting, thinking, feeling, dreaming, and preparing. To a great degree we exist in the 'invisible worlds' of subconscious, spiritual realms, daydreaming, and our own inner depths. We are often consciously unaware - much is happening, yet it seems that nothing is happening. The past slips away, quietly into the night as the future slips in. While the Moon releases her current cycle, extinguishing the light and preparing for the next cycle, we to are releasing extinguishing and preparing; even if we don't know it on a conscious level.
How to make the most of this phase
This is a time to notice the subtle, especially within yourself. It's not a time of dramatic changes and hectic action. Yet it's a time of chaos, in its own way. There is often an uneasy, restlessness about the Balsamic Phase. This isn't (typically) chaos in the external sense, of noticeable disorder and confusion. This is a deeper, more subtle more meaningful type of chaos. The Lunar cycle is ending, with it our cycle of progress and action is ending. Yet a new cycle has not begun. There is a sense of void, but it's not a void. It's filled with the past, the future, hopes and fears. Externally this should be a calm, quiet time. Allow yourself opportunity to think, feel and experience.
The Balsamic Moon Phase is a time of release. The growing and building of the waxing phase have passes. The actively analyzing, correcting, and changing of the waning phase up to this point has passes. Now is the time for acceptance and release. What has gone too far to be repairable, we must let go of. Perhaps it will be re-started in the next, or a future Lunar Cycle. Maybe it won't. But if its time has come, we must now let go. We must have faith in ourselves, and the natural cycle, knowing what we let go of now will be reborn, the resources will be reused, we are making way for something new, releasing emotions and beginning healing…
Balsamic Moon is also a time of preparation. New Moon is approaching; we are on the verge of the next Lunar Cycle. We are on the verge, but not there yet. Gather your strength and resources; let your mind and body relax. Let your spirit and soul play. Let your imagination run wild. We are following the natural cycle. The Moon is now retreating into the shadows, withdrawing into herself, resting and preparing to come back strong and vibrant in the next cycle. This is the time we should be preparing ourselves to be refreshed and ready for great momentum and new growth to come.
One of the best uses for the Balsamic Phase is rest. If you've been pushing yourself too hard, feeling used up and burnt out, the most important thing to do right now is give yourself a break. It's also a time to get in touch either yourself or nature. This is the time to stop and smell the roses, enjoy the moment. It's also a good time for mundane, routine tasks - the kind of thing you do automatically without having to give it much though. Try to avoid strenuous activities, especially mentally strenuous. This is the time for your mind to relax, and let your subconscious, your soul, and your imagination flow. Don't fill your head with a bunch of fact and figures, that won't let the subtle flow through.
In terms of more 'practical' activities, remember we are in the final days of the waning moon. It won't be favorable time for breaking habits, endings, or eliminating until the next phase. If you have things of this nature you need to do, now is the time. This phase of the waning Moon is particularly good for final endings. Anything you don't want to return or want it to at least be slower than typical - now is the time. For example, if you pull weeds they don't grow back as quickly, if you clean out the junk drawer, it will fill up slower, if you plug a leak it's more likely to hold and so on.
This is not the time to begin anything. It is an excellent time for endings. If you need to end a difficult relationship, break a contract, stop a tough habit, etc. this is your best time. In difficult situations, see if anything needs to be ended and if not, this isn't the time to address the problem. In long-term projects, the Balsamic Phase usually seems to be a time of stalled progress. Don't push for something to happen, wait until New Moon. However, this phase can be an excellent time of inspiration and creativity. The logical and forward moving part of things may be stalled, but often what we really need is a break from the activity and some objective, unusual thoughts on the matter.

Litha: A Midsummer Night
Litha, also referred to as Midsummer, occurs at the summer solstice generally around the dates of June 21st and the 22nd. This day marks the longest day of the year where the sun reigns at its peak strength. From here, the power of the sun and therefore the God, begin to wane until his death according to the Wheel of the Year. The Goddess, on the other hand, is full and pregnant with child, her strength building before the harvest of the Earth. With this climax of the strength of the sun, the God as the Oak King is defeated by the Holly King as the world begins to descend into darkness with the last half of the year.
Many people choose to awake before dawn to greet the sun upon this day while lavish and expensive celebrations last until sundown. In ancient times, the Solstice was held to a high esteem where people led torchlight processions and rolled flaming wheels down hillsides. Large bonfires were lit in order to symbolically strengthen the power of the sun. Fire was the chosen element of Midsummer, rightfully so based on the importance of the sun at this time. This element represents transformation and can be attributed to the transformation that occurs at Litha of the Sun God to the Sacrificing God and the Maiden Goddess to her Mother aspect.
The use of fire in the ritual bonfires was very similar to how they were used at Beltane. Farmers would take torches and carry them around their herds or drive their herds between bonfires to prevent disease. People would dance around the bonfires or leap through them as a purification and strengthening process. The wood of choice for these fires was the mighty oak for its strength, will, and steadfastness. It was also symbolic of the defeat of the Oak King by the Holly King for the throne for the latter half of the year. It was said that traditionally, depending on how many bonfires you can see from the hills on this night, you can use these sights for divining events for the future.
Around this point of the year, crops are reaching their full stage of maturity. Wild herbs are also in full bloom as well making it a great time to take out your boline and gather herbs for magickal and medicinal uses. My personal favorite is wild mountain mint! Other traditions include lighting a candle for the entire day of midsummer and performing rituals and spells that are charged by the power of the sun. The best time to conduct these spells and blessings would be at noon at the peak of the sun. Many witches like to create amulets and charms for protection and abundance at this time to be charged for the latter half of the year. This would also be a great time for a witch to conduct the ceremony of Drawing Down the Sun.
Couples at this time are encouraged to renew their vows to each other. Those who were handfasted at Beltane and have endured the trial of a year and a day may wish to make their handfasting permanent. It's a great time to build relationships and to solidify their status.

Midsummer is also popularly known as a night where the faeries dance. Many engage in faery magick and provide offerings of milk and honey as friendly gestures of acknowledgement and to garner friendship. However, not all these faeries are considered benign. It is encouraged that before trying to engage with faeries that one do substantial research before this attempt. Some faeries are more malevolent and can be easily offended by the mere fact of trying to view them without their permission. One should use caution when trying to establish a relationship with faeries. Even Tinkerbell tried to kill Wendy.

Take as much ribbon as you need (at least a foot in length) and wrap it around the herbs in a spiral pattern to bind the herbs together. As you wrap the ribbon around the charm, you may want to meditate on your desired intent of protection and/or prosperity or you may want to create a chant that resonates with you and your desired goal.

The Faery dozen: 12 herbs for Faery gardens, offerings, and magick
Tumblr media
by Michelle Gruben
In the hidden land of Faery, travelers say, there are marvelous herbs and flowers completely unknown in the human world. Brilliant colors, intoxicating scents, and magickal plants that bring joy, visions, or sleep. And yet, over the years, fairies seem to have taken a liking to some of the more common plants right here on Earth.
This list of twelve fairy favorites is drawn mainly from folklore and literature about fairies (as well as a touch of personal experience). Since fairies live close to nature, many plants and herbs are associated with the Fae—but these ones are particularly liked by the Fair Folk.  Some are traditional Faery offerings, planted or bestowed in order to win their favor. Some are considered portal herbs that can aid you in making connections with the Fae. Others are used in spells and formulas for magick of the Faery kind—especially love magick, glamours, and psychic insight.
Let your intuition guide you on how to best use these Faery herbs (observing all safety precautions, of course). To cultivate an appreciation for these storied plants is—in no small way—to step into the Faery lands. I’ve eschewed some of the more exotic plants in favor of ones that can be found without exceptional effort or expense.
Language notes: “Plant” and “herb” are used interchangeably here. Plant names are capitalized out of respect. I usually write “Faery” for the race/kingdom generally and “fairy” for individuals, but not always. (Don’t dwell on it…faeries can't stand a stickler.)
1. Bluebell
Tumblr media
Native to England and France, Bluebells grow in lightly shaded gardens and woodlands. The bell-shaped flowers are an otherworldly blue—the rarest color in nature. The Bluebell was once named after Endymion, the sleeping lover of the moon goddess Selene. The bulbs are poisonous and can pose a danger to humans or animals who mistake them for Spring onions.
Storybook images abound of fairies playing among Bluebells. They are said to dance to the sound of the chiming flower cups. To hear a Bluebell ring is to know that fairies are near. In other (gloomier) customs, the sound presages death.
In Irish tales, it is bad luck to walk through a patch of Bluebells. To do so is to disturb the revels of the Fae and invite their displeasure. Like many fairy flowers, Bluebell is an unlucky blossom to pick or to bring indoors. To cultivate the flower, however, offers no such risks. Bluebells are a charming addition to fairy gardens. (Along with Daisies, Forget-Me-Nots, and other favorites of fairy illustrators.)
2. Vervain
Tumblr media
Vervain is one of the most important herbs in the occult traditions of Europe. Its connection to Faery comes through Italian traditional witchcraft. Vervain is sacred to Diana, a patroness of Witches who is also called Queen of the Fairies.  In Hereditary Witchcraft, Raven Grimassi writes of a fairy who dwells within the Vervain stalk, and who brings good fortune to the one who invokes her.
Druid tradition also reveres Vervain as an herb of initiation and second sight. Seers burn Vervain incense to open a window to the Otherworlds. You don't have to look very far to find Vervain in magickal literature dating back centuries. (There are several European and American species, each with slightly different energies and uses.)
3. Elderberries
Tumblr media
Faeries love all berries! But Elderberries, with their petite size and magickal pedigree, are a fairy favorite. Elder is a Goddess tree long believed to be a gateway to the Underworld. To chop the tree or burn the wood is forbidden. Instead, Elder's gift is her abundant clusters of berries, which are picked and saved for cordials, baked goods, and medicine.
Elderberry wine and Elderberry liqueurs are a fairy delicacy. To pour a dram or two is to be sure that you always have fairy guests.
4. Foxglove
Tumblr media
Foxglove boasts hyper-real purple flowers on long, showy stalks. Just look at some of the folkloric names of this flower: Fairy Gloves, Fairy Petticoats, Fairyweed, Fairy Bells… and so on. The common name Foxglove is probably derived from “Folks' Glove,” a British traditional word that refers to—you guessed it—the Wee Folk. The spots on the “floor” of each flower cup are said to be tracks where fairy feet have trodden.
Foxglove is extremely poisonous. Enjoy its unique beauty—but never use it in incenses or potions. Foxglove is another flower which should not be taken indoors, lest you anger the fairies. (Probably wise enough counsel, especially if you have children or pets.) However, a traditional charm calls for a little piece of Foxglove (carried in a locket) to invoke protective Faery light.
Typical of Fae plants, Foxgloves love liminal spaces and semi-shade. You can often find them on the edges of woods or trails, or just below the crests of hills. To dream of Foxgloves can be either an omen of death or invitation to visit the Faery world.
5. Honeysuckle
Tumblr media
Any flower that attracts bees and butterflies is thought to appeal to fairies, who also delight in sweet smells and cheery colors. Honeysuckle is chief among these garden beauties. Honeysuckle creeps over fences and trellises with gleeful abandon, tempting humans and Fae alike with its nectar. Like many Faery plants, Honeysuckle thrives in part shade.  And like many Faery plants, it also has poisonous characteristics (in the leaves and berries).
Honeysuckle flowers and perfume are powerful ingredients in love-drawing magick. (Alas, the fragrance is too faint and fleeting to be captured as an essential oil.) The clinging vines are said to symbolize seduction. The voluptuous flowers evoke the pleasure of a romantic dalliance. When picking Honeysuckle, it is polite to leave the best and last blossoms on the vine for the Fae.
6. Hawthorn
Tumblr media
Stubby, gnarled Hawthorn is a tree with ancient links to the Underworld and the Faery realms. It is the “Thorn” in the famous Celtic trinity of trees: Oak, Ash, and Thorn. It is a plant full of contradictions, blending pink-white flowers with forbidding thorns. It is a symbol of both fertility and death. Naturally, it is traditionally planted on borders, as a hedge tree.
Hawthorn blooms in May and so is associated with the holiday of Beltane (one of two Pagan festivals when the veil between the worlds is thinnest). To meditate under a Hawthorn tree is said to strengthen one’s connection with the Faery realm. (But don’t fall asleep, unless you fancy getting lost for good.) To wander into a ring of Hawthorn trees is to all but ensure a glimpse of the Fae.
There are many superstitions and precautions regarding Hawthorn. The wood is not to be cut or burned (except at Beltane, when doing so is customary). In Ireland, farmers would go to great lengths to avoid damaging the tree while mowing or plowing. Housewives would never dare to hang laundry from a Hawthorn tree, lest they accidentally cover up the fairies’ own wet clothing.
Hawthorn is used in spells for devoted love, wisdom, and purification. Tradition prohibits bringing boughs of Hawthorn indoors. To be on the safe side, harvest only the berries—or Hawthorn dew, which the fairies use to preserve their youthful beauty.
7. Thyme
Tumblr media
With its miniature leaves and ground-covering habits, Thyme is a common garden herb much-loved by fairies. What’s the appeal? Is it the mouth-watering fragrance? The tiny purple, lavender, or pink flowers? Who knows! But this humble potherb shows up over and over again in the lore of Faery.
Carrying a bundle of Thyme sprigs is said to allow a person to see fairies (or alternately, protect them from fairy mischief.) Sprinkling Thyme near doors or windowsills invites fairies to cross the threshold. Thyme oil may be used to anoint charms and talismans for clairvoyance.
8. Apple
Tumblr media
Many people are surprised to learn that the snack shared by Adam and Eve probably wasn’t an apple at all. (The Bible doesn’t specify the fruit, and medieval artists just improvised.)
No, the apple’s reputation for sin and forbidden knowledge may come from another place entirely—the realm of Faery. Like many other Fae plants, the Apple tree is linked to both sexual power and death.
The Apple is a favorite witch tree. The wood is prized for wands, and the fruit for magick spells. Apple trees bloom in spring (at Beltane) and bear ripe fruit in autumn (at Samhain), effectively marking the two poles of the Pagan calendar. When cut crosswise, the fruit reveals a hidden pentagram, a symbol of witchcraft. Ripe apples can spontaneously ferment to make cider, one of the world's first intoxicants.
Apples are found at Faery banquets and human celebrations alike. Eating an apple, especially at Samhain, is said to grant clairvoyant powers. Apples have been known to stay good for months if properly stored—a trait that echoes the near-eternal youth of the Fae. Apples are an ingredient in numerous love spells and recipes for Faery offerings. Fairies prefer smaller, heritage varieties over produce-aisle monster apples.
9. Fig
Tumblr media
Ask any fairy and she will tell you: There is no food more irresistible than a perfectly ripened fig. Fig season is fleeting, lasting just a few weeks. While modern agriculture has tamed many fruits and flowers to accommodate human whims, nobody has yet produced a good-tasting fig in wintertime.
Fig trees appear in fairy stories in different parts of Asia, Europe, and South America. The Fig fairy is almost universally described as seductive, generous, and clever. Indian folklore tells of celestial dancers (Apsara) who live in Fig trees. They are usually benevolent, but sometimes seduce scholars and scientists in order to sexually exhaust them and frustrate their research.
The ancient species of Figs are primarily pollinated by wasps who die after entering the flower—a botanical fact that hints darkly at Faery’s seductive danger.
10. Primrose
Tumblr media
The Primrose is a flower of true wild beauty. After spring rains, Primrose blankets fields with its pretty, delicate blossoms. In Celtic lore, large patches of Primrose are said to be a gateway into Faery. (In Christian Ireland, they hide the keys to Heaven.) Planting the flower outside your home invites in Faery luck—but be careful not to offend the fairies by letting them die.
The demure sweetness of the Primrose especially appealed to early 20th-century poets and artists. (However, the name comes not from “prim” meaning “proper”, but from its Latin name, “first rose.”) Flower fairy illustrator Cecily Mary Barker wrote this rhyme about the Primrose Fairy:
She’s dear to folk throughout the land; In her is nothing mean: She freely spreads on every hand Her petals pale and clean. And though she’s neither proud nor grand, She is the Country Queen.
Primroses bloom at Beltane and symbolize eternal youth and innocence. It is said that a person who visited the mythical land of Tír na nÓg would return with a bouquet of Primroses. The English idiom “primrose path” refers to the experience of being pleasantly misled (as fairies are inclined to do).
The Cowslip—famously mentioned in A Midsummer Night’s Dream—is another relative of the Primrose. The North American Evening Primrose is botanically unrelated but has a similar Fae appeal. It grows in clustered patches, blooms for one evening only, and tends to resist cultivation.
11. Orchid
Tumblr media
Some people consider Orchids to be the most beautiful flowers in the world. Whatever you think of them, it’s hard to deny that they are among the strangest. There is something extra-terrestrial about them—maybe even Unseelie.
Orchids are hermaphroditic and usually sterile—like fairies, Orchids think human gender and reproduction are kind of hilarious. They are the shapeshifters of the plant kingdom and can look like other plants and animals. But they are still plants, at least. (Unlike mushrooms, another fairy favorite which defies categorization).
The diva of the flower kingdom, Orchids do well indoors and enjoy such human-provided luxuries as fertilizer, humidifiers, and trusses. Are they helpless, or just smarter than us? The well-known phenomenon of Orchid obsession (orchidomania) may be one of the most devious pranks ever perpetrated by the Fae.
12. Rowan
Tumblr media
Rowan is one of the most-mentioned trees in Faery lore and magick. Celtic tradition tells us that Rowan was originally from the land of Faery, and was brought to Earth by the Tuatha de Danann. It is a tree of great strength and mystery. In North America, the tree is more commonly known as Mountain Ash.
Rowan trees grow wild in the Scottish Highlands and are known by their bright red berries. (Scottish tradition bans the use of the wood except under special circumstances.) They are commonly found near ancient settlements and stone circles—probably from having been planted for religious reasons. Individual trees may live over 200 years, playing host to innumerable fairy gatherings in that time.
Rowan is dubbed the Witch Tree, and appears in many spells for psychic power and protection. Skim through enough of these, and you may notice an apparent contradiction: Rowan is said to be both attractive to Fae and to offer protection from Fae. Rowan was planted in churchyards to discourage evil spirits. A cross of Rowan hung above a cradle once protected its occupant. And a string of Rowan berries could be worn to deflect sorcery.
Rowan is undeniably a Faery tree—she exists as a wise protector and gatekeeper. Compared, perhaps, to the playful fairies of fruits and flowers, Rowan is a stronger, older being who can keep the delicate peace between humans and Fae.
Hope you've enjoyed this whirlwind tour of Faery plants. There are many others—in fact, some people believe that every plant has a Faery spirit that presides over it. Enjoy learning about plant magick, and may your explorations take you on marvelous journeys!

Fanfic: Changeling
Summary: There were once two babies: a human and a faerie. One was sweet and cute as could be; the other was weak and wild. The two were switched, exchanged, and left to grow up in the other's world.
This is one of their stories.
(Part of the Crystal Court Fae AU)
Changeling
There was once a sweet human baby.
She was as cute as they came. Chubby and thick-limbed, big, shiny amber eyes, blonde hair like gold. Healthy and strong. Well behaved, too. Rarely fussed or cried, which was a relief for her harried parents.
There was once a strange Fae baby.
All Fae babies are strange. She was chubby, but tiny too, with purplish skin, faded-grey hair, and sharp teeth that drew blood from her mother's breasts. Sickly and weak. An obvious troublemaker. Laughed and cried in equal measure, and her wails would have driven her human mother to exhaustion, if she'd had the capacity anymore.
Spring liked babies.
It was one of her defining characteristics. She was the season of birth. Of fresh green growth, of flowers on trees, of birds and bees, of fawns on unsteady legs taking their first tentative steps.
She loved to take walks through the mortal world, to see the changes She had brought. She'd stroke the leaves of new trees, breathe deep the scent of flowers, cradle newborn bunnies and crocodiles and elephants. She loved the children born into her own Court as well, all the more because they were so rare. Most Fae had come into existence with the world itself, and new ones were few and far in between.
That was the main reason Spring collected humans, especially young maidens. For their fine music and art, of course, but mostly for their babies. She liked to play with them, to tickle their tummies, to hear them scream when she tossed them in the air and when they hit the ground.
Despite all appearances, Spring was not soft. Spring was practical. Not all babies survived: that was a fact of life. Baby birds fell out of trees. Baby bunnies were snatched up in the jaws of hawks. Fawns were taken down by wolves. And if they were not, then the wolves' own pups would starve.
Survival of the fittest. It was only nature.
Spring looked down at the little Faeling, purple-skinned and sharp-toothed, and knew she was not fit.
Worse, knew she was not fun.
She wanted someone better. So she sent her people out to find a replacement.
The faeries found the sweet human baby, the one given the name Cristal by her parents. Said parents were busy, that day. The father was in the forest, chopping wood for the fire. The mother was doing the washing in the yard. The elder siblings were about, half-working, half-playing. None were minding the baby, now a toddler, walking around on strong, stubby legs. She was safe enough, they were all sure.
Cristal had been taught not to wander off, but she caught sight of something sparkly in the woods, and could not help herself. For once in her young life, she disobeyed. In the bushes she found a person with wings like a butterfly, eyes like dewdrops, and a smile like diamonds. They said they were a Faerie.
The Faerie stole the human toddler. Took her clothes, and put them on the Fae toddler instead. Cast a glamour on the Fae child: purple skin became cream, grey hair became gold, sharp teeth became rounded. A perfect reflection.
They sent the weakling off to the human family on trembling legs and took the strong, human toddler to their Court.
Spring loved her.
To the human family, Cristal seemed to transform overnight.
Where once she had slept soundly through the nights, now she refused to rest, running around and around their small cottage, yelling and screaming. Whenever they took her into town, she became a bother there as well. Never waiting, talking too loudly, getting her hands into everything, frightening the horses. She became a picky eater, grousing about bread being boring, food being too salty. Yet at the same time, it seemed she'd stick practically anything in her mouth: dirt, feathers, sticks, rocks.
The parents were frustrated but didn't think much of it. They'd raised three other children. They went through odd phases as they got older. Cristal would grow out of it.
They hoped.
In some ways, she did. Cristal learned from the yellings, the spankings, the cruel looks, to stop the tantrums. To be quiet. To not rock back and forth. To hide her odd snacks. She didn't always succeed, but she tried, oh she tried, to be a good daughter.
But other oddities began to be noticed.
She got sick, afflicted by strange rashes that no one could explain. She hated the sound of church bells, which were loud, much too loud, forcing her to cover her ears. She picked too many fights with the village boys, fights that a little, weakling girl by no rights should win. But win she did, wearing her bruises with pride. She got lashed for misbehaviour and stopped, instead muttering dark things under her breath. The targets of her ire seemed tormented by bad luck: broken legs, sick livestock, plagues of pimples. The town's children avoided her, and even her own siblings were wary of her. She preferred the company of animals to humans.
Sometimes, people said, she looked odd. If you caught her out of the corner of her eyes- purple skin, sharp teeth, red eyes.
Whispers began. Rumors.
Witch. Demon-spawn. Changeling.
The parents scoffed; said the villagers were superstitious fools jumping at shadows.
But in private, they exchanged worried looks and wondered.
The girl now called Cristal made it to nearly seven years before something broke.
It was evening, and she was dallying in her chores. The grain in her satchel was heavy, her feet were tired, and she'd stumbled upon her favourite cat in the town square on her way back from the mill. She'd grabbed a stick, and was playing with it, dragging the stick through the dirt, hooting and hollering while the cat tried to catch it.
Someone behind her laughed.
"Playing with your own kind, huh?!" came the cackle from the blacksmith's apprentice.
"Better than your kind," the girl snarled back at him. And for a moment, she looked wrong : her eyes slitted and amber, her face furry, her teeth sharp. A cat.
The boy yelped, and the girl laughed, happy to see the fear on his face.
On instinct, the apprentice reached into a pouch at his belt, and brought out a handful of nails. He flung them at the girl.
She yelped, and then screamed as they hit her. They hurt, hurt far more than they should have. It wasn't just that they dug into her skin; they seemed to burn, searing her. Those rashes she'd gotten, whenever she'd tried to help cook or tend to the fire- they were here, and they hurt.
The boy had acted on fear; now he acted on triumph, pulling out more and more of the nails he'd made, flinging them at the girl, who screamed and tried to bat them away with little success. Suddenly she felt tired, so tired, and her skin was burning. Her eyes filled with tears; she couldn't see.
People's attention was drawn to the commotion. Though Cristal was half-blind, she heard the gasps of shock, of fear.
She heard the blacksmith's apprentice shout, "Demon!"
She heard others take up the cry.
The nails had stopped coming, and her eyes became clear enough to see. All around her, people were staring; farmers, bakers, the miller, the midwife, children and elderly alike. The cat at her side had its back arched, claws out, and was hissing at all of them.
Cristal didn't ask, didn't wait. She just picked up her bag of grain and ran.
She ran and ran and ran until she reached her home. She flung open the door and rushed in, shaking for breath. Her mother heard her panic, and began to say, "What is wrong? You did not get into a fight again, did you-?"
But then she turned, and the mother stopped.
Cristal saw the shock on her face. The fear.
"Maman?"
The woman held her hands to her breast, and asked in a trembling voice, "What are you?"
It was only then the girl looked down, and was met with an unfamiliar body. Her creamy skin was gone, replaced with a deep purple, as though her whole body was a bruise. Her arm seemed at the same time too chubby and too short. She dropped her satchel and raised her hand. At each finger was a long, wicked claw.
"What has happened to me?" she cried. "Maman? What has happened?! "
"I am not your maman!"
By then the rest of the family was there, having heard the commotion- the girl spun around, and saw the same horror on all their faces. Her Papa's expression was hard. One of her sisters was shaking her head. One of her brothers was reaching for his knife. Her last brother, who was just two years older, was the only one to look sad. There were tears in his eyes when he said, "Run. Run, before they catch you!"
So the girl ran again, this time away from home, into the forest.
As she ran, she tripped and fell. She got up, but this time, stayed on four legs. It felt easier like this. She imagined herself as her favourite black cat, light and lithe on her feet.
She could hear people behind her. A low, angry murmur, the occasional yell rising above it all, and she could feel her heart thudding in her chest.
It was dark. It was dark, but somehow she could see.
Far scarier than the darkness were the lights. Torches, flames, casting strange shadows through the trees.
She was tired. Her feet hurt. They were catching up to her. She smelled iron. Weapons.
Close. So close now.
But somehow, they didn't catch her. Every time a hunter got close, something stopped them. A stray root where they hadn't seen one. A low-hanging branch throwing them off their horse. An unexpected wind blowing out their torch, leaving them blind.
And the girl ran on.
In the darkness, the girl found a cave.
It smelled of stone, of water, of must, of blood, of something animalistic. Something in the back of her mind recognised that scent- wolf.
She went into the cave anyway. Wolves, she thought, she could deal with. It was the humans- her fellow villagers, her family- who scared her now. She just wanted to hide away in the hole and be safe. Maybe the wolves would protect her.
But the cave was empty. There were signs that it had been a den once, but the wolf pack had clearly moved on.
The girl curled up, too tired to keep running. She closed her eyes and listened, hearing the stamp of boots, the baying of horses and barking of dogs, the crackle of fire, and the shouts, the shouts. "Find the demon! Slay her! Cast it away!"
And then a new sound. Perhaps one could call it a song, except it was too discordant to be considered music. It sounded like- like the burning of the summer sun, like the rush of the autumn rain, like the chill of the winter wind. It started quiet, then grew louder and louder and louder-
Through shut eyelids, the girl saw light: yellow and blue and white…
And then she saw and heard nothing as she fell into a deep, deep slumber.
When the human hunters eventually searched the cave, there was nothing but rock and stone inside.
Time passed, and the magic wore off.
The girl woke up, slowly, unsteadily. Her whole body was stiff, stiff. Her eyes felt glued shut. Her arms and legs felt heavy, and took immense effort to stretch.
Finally, she managed to sit up. She blinked. Daylight streamed through the cave. All signs of the humans were gone, as was the smell of wolf.
She clenched her hand, her sharp nails digging into her palm. Where was she to go now?
Her stomach gurgled. She was hungry. She picked up some dried leaves from the cave floor, and shoved them into her mouth. Swallowed. That helped a bit. She rocked back and forth, as she did when she was thinking.
She couldn't stay there. What if the hunters returned?
Stumbling out into the sunlight, she found the forest looked different. She hadn't been able to pay much attention, in the darkness, with the running, but she could have sworn the trees were in different positions. She wasn't entirely sure which direction lead to the place she had called home. She'd been running to the West, she thought, so after a moment's consideration, decided to continue in that direction.
Following the path of the sun, it wasn't long- an hour, perhaps- before she reached the forest's edge. She had come to the flat stretch of land, and she stared out at it, perplexed.
It looked like it should have been a field, of grass or crops. Instead, it was filled with nothing but churned mud. It was hard to tell, but it looked like someone had dug long, snaking channels into the earth, piling it into mounds. The girl had seen something like that at a nearby river which sometimes flooded, except these channels were topped with sharp, pointed wire, more of it and more thinly drawn than she had ever seen.
Why would anyone do such a thing?
She lurked in the bushes, getting as close as she could, but still, she could not understand. Finally, overcome with curiosity, she stepped out to investigate.
BANG!
The girl leapt into the air, so startled she was by the noise. But it didn't stop- BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
The sound blocked everything else, the air suddenly filled with the smell of smoke and fire, and things were flying, flying everywhere. Something grazed the girl in the cheek, and it burned, seared.
She heard people yelling, and she moved on pure instinct, leaping into the nearest channel, hands to her cheek, eyes threatening tears again.
She looked up, and found herself surrounded by strange men. They were pointing bizarre metal sticks at her.
"Don't hurt me!" she cried, throwing up her hands. "Please!"
(If they did, if they tried, she wouldn't go down easy, she'd already decided. She'd see what her new claws could do.)
But the men didn't try to hurt her. They didn't even look angry. They were talking- some yelling, some muttering, but mostly, they just seemed confused.
The girl was confused too. Why were they not hurting her? She glanced down at herself, and saw she'd changed back. Her ugly purple skin returned to its proper cream and her nails were short and neatly filed. She was even wearing her best Sunday dress, which made no sense; she had not been before.
She was confused, too, by the men's speech. It sounded like French, but all wrong. The words, the grammar, the accents.
One man crouched down low, spoke slowly and deliberately. "Je suis Pierre," he said, pointing at his chest, and strange language or not, the girl understood. "Tu t'appelles comment?"
The girl didn't answer, so the man and his fellows tried again and again, eventually resorting to just pointing at her, and repeating, "Prénom? Prénom?"
The girl understood this, at least. She simply did not know how to answer. As far as she could remember, she'd always been called Cristal. But then her maman had yelled at her, said she was not her daughter, and her family had chased her out of the house, hunted her and-
- no. She didn't want to be Cristal.
Not anymore.
The nameless girl was still scared.
She had no idea where she was. The loud bangs continued for some time, then stopped, aside from the occasional one that would go off with no warning. They came from the strange sticks many of the men carried, which shot out fire and metal. Weapons, clearly.
The girl did not like them. Not because they were weapons- she quite liked weapons, all told- but because if she touched them, they burned her hand.
The men were loud, and spoke strangely, and dressed oddly, but they were kind to her. They all lived underground, in dark, damp rooms, but they found her a bed that was reasonably dry and bundled up. Someone came to touch her cheek; she hissed at him, and he backed away. He came back later, hands up, holding a bandage, and gestured that he just wanted to help heal her blistered hands and face. She let him. Another man brought her a bowl filled with a soup. It was plain and runny, but it was hot, and she ate it gratefully.
A little later, another man, his face all sooty, gestured for her to hold open her palm. After a little hesitation, she did. He put a brown square on it. He mimed eating it.
The girl blinked. She liked dirt- always had- but a grown up had never told her to eat it. She was tempted not to, just to be contrary.
But she did, and it was the sweetest thing she had ever tasted.
"Chocolat," the man said.
"Chocolat," the girl repeated, and he grinned at her.
That night she curled up in a bunk dug into an underground trench, head on chocolat-man's lap, and slept soundly.
The tale of the Mystery Girl of the Trenches spread like wildfire. First through the French troops, then into the French press, and then through the newspapers of all the allied nations. Strange child appears out of nowhere in No Man's Land. Just barely survived by ducking into a nearby trench. Doesn't seem to speak a word of proper, modern French, but sweet as can be, regardless. Taken in by a friendly division. It was a feel good story, during a war in which there were very few to go around.
Everyone knew the front lines of the Great War was no place for such a young child. Attempts were made to bring her somewhere safer, but none of them succeeded. Trucks would break down. Agents coming to collect the girl would get lost or end up in the wrong place. Sometimes people looking for her suddenly flat out forgot what it was they were doing. Over time, the soldiers grew more and more resistant to the idea of her leaving, of her being taken away. She was fun to be around, playful, a single bright spot in their existence of muck and poor food and the constant threat of death. They didn't want to let go of her.
This suited the girl perfectly. She didn't want to let go of them, either.
Not everyone could be so easily waylaid.
After some months, three strangers appeared in the girl's trench. They were all women, which was what made them stand out. There weren't many women in this war. And the few women the girl had seen around here wore skirts, but these ones wore pants, like the men. One of them was black, as well. The only black people she'd ever seen before were the 'Harlem Hellfighters,' but she had never seen this lady among them, which made her a source of immediate curiosity.
But there was something else about them, too. When she caught sight of them out of the corner of her eye, their forms seemed to flicker.
They noticed the girl right away. Strode towards her. She felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise up.
They had come to take her away. The girl knew it. She also knew that no one would let them. Her friends, the soldiers, would stop them.
But they didn't. It was like they didn't even notice the women.
"Pierre! Pierre!" the girl called, but her friend just stared past her, smiling blankly into empty air.
The girl backed away.
"Do not be afraid," said one woman, the really tall one with big, curly hair. That made the girl stop. She spoke the right language. French. Her French.
"How did you get here?" asked next woman, the thin one, in the same French.
"Why should I tell you?" the girl demanded, crossing her arms.
"Because we can't have you hurting anyone," said the black woman, while at the same time, the big one said, "Because we're here to help you."
The girl narrowed her eyes.
The thin woman came and asked, "Do you know what you are?"
"What kinda question is that?" said the girl.
The three women exchanged looks.
"You are not human," said the black one.
Yes I am, the girl wanted to say, but the words stuck on her tongue. She was fairly certain that would be a lie.
The thin woman waved a hand. It felt like a cold bucket of water had been dumped on her head. When she looked, back was her horrible, demonic appearance. She flinched, waiting for the screams, the attacks- but none came.
The soldiers were not looking at her. They were not looking anywhere. They were staring into space, wearing odd, vacant smiles, just like Pierre. She ran to the nearest man- the one who had given her chocolat- and shook him, but he didn't even seem to notice.
"What did you do to them?" the girl demanded, terrified.
"They are not hurt," the big one promised.
"We will let them go," the thin one assured.
"We just need to talk," the black one said.
And then they changed.
The big one, who said to call her Rose, wore a dress of white. Her hair was not hair at all, but a cascade of flower petals that seemed to blow in an unfelt breeze. The thin one, who said to call her Pearl, had skin so white it looked like freshly fallen snow, and eyes misty grey all the way through. The black one, who said to call her Garnet, had three eyes, each a different color, and lightning danced around her fingers.
They did not ask the girl her name.
She thought she should be scared of them, and yet, she was not.
They explained things to her. They said she was not wrong, demonic, or evil. They said she was Fae, just like them. They asked where she had come from, for, "There are not many Fae left on this plane."
So the girl told her story, and they listened, solemn and serious. They got more serious still when she described the strange light, the song, the sleep. They said it was a powerful curse. They said she had been lucky that it had not hurt her too badly. That in a way, it had protected her. That it had merely put her in a stasis for many hundreds and hundreds of years.
This made a lot of sense to the girl and explained so much. Why people spoke different, dressed different, and could make such strange things from metal. In a way, it felt like she had already knew.
The three women said they could help her. Teach her. Keep her safe.
"It's dangerous for you here," said Rose, tears pouring down her face. She wiped them off with a hand, and pressed it to the girl's shoulder. She was covered in rashes, all over; they were impossible to avoid in a place so oozing with metal. But at the damp touch, all those sores faded away.
The girl knew in her heart of hearts they were telling the truth. "But… that means I would have to leave them."
The three Fae followed her gaze as she looked around at the men who had taken her in.
"You truly care for them, I see," Garnet said.
"Yes," said the girl.
"You wouldn't want them hurt, would you?" Pearl said.
"No," said the girl.
"And do you want to help others like them? The good humans?" Rose said.
The girl thought this over. The memory of the hunters was still fresh in the mind. But fresher still were the strangers' smiles, their warm soup, their chocolat. "Yeah. Yeah, I think I do."
All three of the Fae smiled.
"They will be safer without you here," said Pearl.
"But we will not leave them without thanks," said Rose.
"We will begin teaching you now," said Garnet.
The girl left, leaving only vague memories of her behind.
The soldiers missed her, but they all agreed it was for the best she'd left. The front was no place for a child. They couldn't have borne it, if she'd been killed. Looking back, they weren't entirely sure why they'd allowed her to stick around so long.
She'd been an odd kid, anyway.
Though the girl was gone, she and the other Fae had left a mark, invisible as it was. The soldiers had cared for her, and that deserved something in exchange. Each Fae had left a gift, a charm. From Garnet: bunks that were always warm. From Pearl: boots and socks that stayed dry, feet that never became diseased. From Rose: fresh air, without a hint of poison.
From the girl: a seemingly endless supply of chocolate.
The journey the Fae took the girl on was long, but it was the most exciting time of her life.
It was a relief to leave behind the trenches, even if it meant saying goodbye to her friends. The world beyond them was beautiful, and filled with such excitement and novelty. Radios! Planes! Zippers! Ice-cream!
She saw the ocean for the first time, and it was amazing, how it stretched on for ever and ever and ever.
It was a good thing she liked it, because it took a full month to cross it, even with Pearl summoning a wind to fill their sails. The girl was never bored, however. She spent her time learning all manner of things. About modern English and French, and how to speak it. About where she had come from. About the Fae and their laws. About magic and conjurings and glamor.
She was a shapechanger, it turned out. It came to her naturally. She liked to jump through the waves as a dolphin, fly through the air like a bird.
Garnet, Pearl and Rose were never scared of her. They never flinched away. They didn't get mad if she screamed, never told her to stop rocking back and forth, or that she couldn't eat driftwood. They said she was perfect just the way she was.
They took her to a cave in a land called America. This was good: the girl liked caves. From the outside, it didn't look strange at all. But when she stepped inside, the world seemed to shift, and it was a million times better than the tiny dens that had littered the landscape in her old home in France.
There were waterfalls that flowed upwards. Pools of bubbling lava. Soft, pink clouds. A giant, beating heart, pulsating with light. And from the walls jutted all sorts of bright crystals in all sorts of colors.
The girl was drawn to them, partly for their sparkle, partly because they reminded her of her old name. Not all the time she'd spent with maman and papa and her brothers and sister had been bad.
"What's this?" she said, pointing to bright red rock.
"Garnet," said Garnet, smiling.
"And this?" she said, pointing at a stone of soft pink.
"Rose Quartz," said Rose.
She frowned at them. "Are you named after the rocks?"
Rose said no; she was named after the flower. And Pearl said, technically, her name didn't come from a rock at all, but rather a hard, shiny object produced by an animal called an oyster.
"I am," said Garnet. "I picked it myself. To fit in with the others."
The girl liked this. She wanted to fit in too. She wanted to belong.
She looked at her dark, purple skin. There was a rock in the wall, almost the exact same color.
"What's that called?" she said, and Garnet smiled wider at her.
"Amethyst."
Nearly a hundred years later, Amethyst held a baby in her arms, a tiny boy who chewed absently on one of her fingers.
She felt sick in her stomach, sick with grief, and her eyes were sore from tears she refused to shed, and she was tired, just tired, and angry.
But not at him. Not at Steven.
It had been a long, long time since she'd been a sister. Since she'd had siblings.
She still remembered them. Or little things about them. A sister braiding her hair. A brother teaching her how to carve wood. Minding the sheep with another brother, as he sung songs to pass the time.
Technically, they'd never really been hers. Not by blood, and if there had been a bond, it had long since been severed.
But there had been good parts, there. Amethyst hoped she could be as good as they had once been. She hoped she could be better.
She would make sure Steven belonged too.
