I'm such a big fan of immortal cas endgame but he's not an angel, not fully, not the way he was when he came to earth, the righteous man his charge, when the apocalypse was still the most terrifying thing in the world and there was hope of keeping it at bay. but he's not human either, because he can never be, because the body that is his — his — is still not really his. the soul he's grown can't fit in it quite right, not the way a human's is supposed to, anyway.

where does this leave him? somewhere between heaven and earth. with his clipped wings, and his crooked, cracked halo. he'll never quite be human, but he's human enough for his little family of misfits. and he's never going to be an all-powerful angel again, but he's angel enough to teach his son the things he needs to learn, to heal the hurt when he is able, to cross the boundary into heaven when he's called. it's an odd, uncomfortable, terrifying, wonderful place to be. and maybe it's not exactly what he wants, and maybe he longs for his wings and his grace and the power of heaven at the tips of his fingers sometimes, but it's enough, he thinks, considering. he's happy. isn't that kind of the whole point?

angeal: he feels like a peppermint hot chocolate kind of dude, but add a shit load of espresso because the poor guy absolutely needs gallons of espresso to be able to put up with zack, genesis, and sephiroth on a daily basis (someone help that poor man)

genesis: IN THEORY he would absolutely be an apple cinnamon EVERYTHING kind of guy BUT not from any kind of cafe because he believes none of them can do it right! so he has to make it himself and he has been forbidden by the others to ever be allowed to order it again because it’s never good enough for him and it pisses him off, and every time they go to a new cafe and he orders an apple cinnamon anything he always spends the rest of the day critiquing every single little thing off about it, much to the rest of the guys annoyance because none of them want to hear genesis rant about a decently flavored cafe item just because it wasn’t up to his weird apple freak standards… so instead he is 100% one of THOSE pumpkin spice bitches! like the at the cafe the moment they release it kind of pumpkin spice bitch (but even though he likes it he still doesn’t think it’s as good as it should be and he can absolutely make it better but he doesn’t complain AS much)

sephiroth: every time he goes with the others he just lets them take turns ordering for him because he’s never had most of it before, but he never ends up with any strong opinions on any of the holiday items, and he never particularly loves any of them but he never complains about it or shows any distaste in any of it either, the only indication on how he feels about whatever has been ordered for him is that if it’s something he likes his pupils will dilate like a cats, although some of the more colorful treats tend to catch his eye, and if he had to rank the others orders on which he liked best it would probably go cloud (he likes the less sweet desserts), angeal (he likes the mint cocoa, but he prefers spearmint), genesis (he actually quite like the apple cinnamon but isnt fond of pumpkin spice), and zack (he doesn’t dislike it, but he prefers the others)

zack: he feels like he would get every overly sweet treat they sell and is probably an ultra sweet smores coffee drinker, except angeal has to go behind his back and tell the barista to make it decaf, not wanting to deal with a zack hopped up on tons of sugar AND caffeine, but then genesis goes behind angeal’s back and tells the barista to make it as highly caffeinated as possible

cloud: he would probably mainly just get a few of the less sweet holiday pastries and maybe a gingerbread hot cocoa/coffee if he had to get a drink, but he also lets the others order for him when he goes out with them just because he doesn’t want to cause too much trouble

oooooo interesting question!! this is definitely gonna be long-winded even by my standards bc i'm about to speculate on a LOT so let's talk about it!!!

ok so there's a couple things that we seem to have laid out in the lore to start with, and that's largely the division that exists between true angels and their previously human counterparts. true angels look down on those derived from humans, seeming disinterested in god's experimentation and almost wanting to segregate themselves from them, while the human-based angels seem to revere true angels and follow the orders they give to them. the only rankings known to exist in ultrakill at this time (act ii) are archangels and virtues - theologically speaking, archangels exist as the second to lowest choir while virtues rank right in the middle BUT that's clearly not the case here as virtues come from human souls and gabriel clearly has the power to direct them. this could be for a couple reasons: ultrakill may follow the precedent set by paradise lost, which places archangels at the top of the angelic hierarchy, or "archangel" is a title conferred to gabriel, but not his actual "species". this comes from the idea of some texts that the four archangels are not true archangels but are in fact of a much higher rank, such as cherubim, that are denoted with the title to reference their leadership role amongst the angels. this is the idea i tend to favor in this case, as i don't believe gabriel is at the top of the hierarchy given his loyalty to the council, but i also believe he must be quite high up due to his power and respect.

i will say i don't think my interpretation is anything too different from anyone else's or many other pieces of media that examine heaven as less than perfect, but i believe these hierarchies are IMMENSELY important. the reason gabriel carries out his orders so diligently despite obviously being much more powerful and beloved than the councilors is simply because at least some of them rank over him - he is a being made to serve and if they are those that speak in god's place, he will do as they say just the same. the council, for their part, i think both used his strength and good will to bolster their decisions while frankly just. kind of hating him for the massive respect he garnered from the citizens in heaven. i tend to think this popularity stems from the fact that he interacted often with humans - he is always the messenger angel sent to earth and in some way, he's built a rapport with humanity. it goes both ways too, in that gabriel doesn't believe in segregation the way other true angels do and often interacts with human souls in heaven (i, like everyone else, believes he is particularly kind with children and he enjoys spending time with them when he has a chance to rest...i like them all looking like little lambs ;o;) this extends even further into his borderline heretical treatment of the sinners in hell - he's not nearly so harsh in his heart of hearts on their wrongs when they are remorseful or when their crimes truly weren't so terrible. but this is the inherent part of gabriel's tragedy - his sympathy and softness towards them is always overridden by his orders, and so this is why i believe even though he was always capable of overthrowing the council, he never did. orders are absolute to him, and his personal feelings never factor into the violence he carries out.

all of this culminates in how he is treated by the council - his power and popularity do a lot to further their ends, how efficiently he builds their empire on his back and how much the citizenry happily support anything gabriel does, but it's likely that they were looking for a way to get rid of him by the time the game happens. he is too powerful, he is too sympathetic to humanity, and i believe it was widely rumored in those higher circles that gabriel had unnatural tendencies toward the damned, though the proof may not have existed. they really honestly all believe that his role of messenger led him to be too close, too involved with the humans they so look down on.

i know i'm not the first person to suggest the idea (and here's where things get REALLY speculative hhh), but i too think the council was ready to dispose of gabriel now that their rule in heaven was absolute. i think it began with making him the judge of hell at a time when hell was becoming entirely unmanageable - not only does the council likely care little for hell and only wish to maintain its upkeep for its own sake or perhaps to uphold the idea that they still follow god's will, but it's also a mammoth task to regain control over it now that it's so far gone. and they send gabriel. perhaps they believed he was the only one who was capable of cleaning up that mess, but the move seems political, like a way to invent a failure for him. because failure is a death knell for angels, one that incurs heavy punishment as you are meant to be perfect in all you do. so gabriel was given a hell now run by its sinners, and so many there are, with planned insurrections and an entire layer flooded, he was sent with some lower angels to attempt an impossible effort. and he managed it. i'm positive he ran himself ragged doing it, committed a multitude of his own sins in the process, but he reinstated god's will to the extent that any of them can. so he didn't fail, but he's getting tired. and then the machines come, v1 comes, and gabriel is sent to deal with that because the whole of hell is seemingly only his business now. all he needs to do is fail and the council will be justified in their decision to rip the light from his body. because honestly, if it's not political, that would be a BONKERS move on their part given how gabriel seemed to single-handedly deal with the hell problem before all of this. they have an agenda and gabriel accepts it too, coming to them meek and ashamed after losing his fight, doing nothing to stop them as they tear the light from him and his anger is directed entirely toward v1, not the council. he's too obedient to think otherwise.

sorry for carrying on a lot more specifically about gabriel and the council, BUT that's mostly what i can say while sticking somewhat within the confines of canon. overall though, i think it's a strict and segregated place - the human souls are in paradise, but they very rarely see true angels other than gabriel since god disappeared. for their part, they are maintaining after the fall of man, believing in god's almighty power and mostly confident that gabriel and the council are completely in control of the situation. honestly...i'm not sure if this is disputed by anything, but i do kind of like the idea that maybe they're not even fully aware that god is gone. the true angels are adrift, purposeless, doing route management of heaven and little else, save for the council. its infrastructure is starting to buckle, it's turning into whatever the council wishes to make of it, and gabriel is exhausting himself trying to maintain the illusion that this place is still fully functional as it once was. BASICALLY heaven has a veneer of being fine and is holding up for now, crumbling just beneath the surface, but the human souls don't know and the true angels refuse to acknowledge it.

Random Au idea I had while watching JoJo P5.... you know how the Boss of the mafia is called Diavolo?

Basically Ik is just a normal schoolkid who helps an injured man on her way home. Little does she know the man happens to be Lucifer, one of the leaders who runs the gang controlling the local area, who now owes her his life and will repay his debt as such

In the process he accidentally gets attached and so does the rest of his brothers, oops. Now the gang's all trying to make sure she doesn't get got by their enemies while also trying their best to keep the whole mafia thing a secret (also she's lowkey reforming them without even trying)

oooo this is a cool idea!! (also when i first started playing obey me i spent the first two months thinking of the jojo character EVERY time i saw diavolo, so this au definitely hits home for me)

so i guess diavolo is the... well, diavolo of this situation, the Big Boss of the whole operation, and lucifer is bucciarati, leader of a secondary team within the organisation... maybe the angels could be a rival gang, and the brothers got ousted (and defected to diavolo's side as a result)

it'd be funny if relations are SUPER tense between them on any given day, like one-misstep-from-getting-stabbed levels of bad blood, but as soon as ik shows up there's just a mutual "everyone shut the fuck up and act natural" moment

she shows up while the lucifer's gang is having a stand-off with simeon's and the brothers are all immediately like "SHSHHHSHHHHH. DON'T TELL HER" and simeon just nods and immediately is like "oh what a completely innocent gathering of friends this is! lucifer my friend how nice it is to see you again! i love being normal and hanging out with my friends!!!!"

but that like, you can have it all ways out here. the Always Small fairies i think being a later kind of victorian deal, rather than "fairies are shapeshifters & can become animals e.g. & May have a 'tiny little inches or millimeters high mode' but that's just a mode & the fact that generally though they just look like people, maybe with some stylistic variations and tells, means watch out" and i think wings came up ever, across yknow the various centuries and regions of folklore out here lmao and possible origins / influences yet further across time & regions & cultures, but again "always small and always winged" being a very relatively modern victorian deal. but we can draw on that to be sure when, additionally, a Potential mutual [would prefer to avoid] between fairies and humans (as opposed to "if your house or some shit is on a fairy path bestie just build them another door to walk straight through cuz they're Gonna") becomes "no, fairies mostly avoid humans more than the other way around" type of imbalance of any threat means like, well hey sure, the Real Self could then become a tiny little magical guy having fun with wing designs who is shy and elusive but maybe another fun little guy can accidentally become aware but then have a secret little hidden friendship hmm....

but then also just thinking of the version where you just look exactly like everyone else and live amongst them, changeling style. and potentially don't Know you're different, or at least not Why, b/c this is a "from birth" thing like hmmm ya don't say. and the whole thread where in some folklore fairies Aren't nonhuman, the difference is only about the separate fairy Realm you live in, which is different, with like "yeah sometimes fairies come from people who died." and alongside / overlapping with everything like "yeah you could disappear for a few days to that realm and then be like 'don't wanna / can't talk about it'" and whatever all various like "watch out for the liminal and unknowingly wandering or being taken into the fairy world and Then watch out for communing with them b/c then you could be Permanently affected, or permanently continually affected or vulnerable, or just stuck there. and we wouldn't want that" like well don't let them know your name but maybe try to find out their names b/c you can get at them in turn that way, don't get in on any food, don't get in on any parties. though variations, sometimes people getting whisked away for particular tasks that apparently Only humans can do. or forever potential for helpful / sympathetic fairy interventions in life. like fairies raising humans b/c their human parents were awful

also, that some classic Tests for "is your baby a changeling?" were very like, "well i guess if we drowned or burned that person and they just died about it....our bad," in the way that like apparently the way to go could be "put them in the fire. where they'll either burn or fly out the chimney." or "start going tf beating them with objects. so that they go away" like and they never stop beating winston with hammers out here!! or the classic "idk abandon them in the forest so fairies can take them back" like well they do also like [i prefer to pretend winston doesn't exist / forget that he does] lmao. this isn't really related. just the ol "ballpeen hammers kind of goated when it comes to putting someone in a sack and beating them to death" factor out here for your local changelings
