Clarke Griffin Appreciation Week 2023!

Hey Clarke Kru! It's been a while since Daily Clarke Griffin has had an event, don't you think? Well, it's time to change that! We're bringing Clarke Griffin Appreciation Week back for its third year! As always, the event will run from October 24th to October 30th. (We start on Eliza's birthday and end the day before Halloween, it's the perfect time to celebrate Clarke, not to mention it's her birth month too!)

As we've done before, a list of prompts have been selected for each day to give you some inspiration for what you create for the week! Like we have said in the past, this event is hosted for all types of content creators, whether you make gifs or graphics or moodboards or videos or fic, we try to pick out themes we think will work for everyone. Check them out below!

Prompts:

Day 1: Favorite Look — For our first day we'd love to see your favorite Clarke outfit/look! Do you love her classic season one outfit? Maybe you like the black and blue outfits of season two! Or maybe give a nod to her temporary outfits like the Ark flashback or one of her dresses? Maybe you think her short hair could use some more appreciation, or you could even make a compilation of all her different hairstyles throughout the years!

Day 2: Favorite Underrated Friendship — We've done favorite friendship/dynamic, but what about a pairing that you think deserved more love? Maybe you wished we got a lot more out of the Clarke and Wells relationship. Maybe it's another one of the delinquents like Miller or Harper. Or what about Clarke and Roan? There's tons of duos to choose from, tell us your fave underrated relationship!

Day 3: Color — For this day we want to challenge all of your beautiful creative minds by channeling color! Whether that be one single color that makes you think of Clarke or a whole plethora of colors by making a rainbow edit! You could even use a color palette generator for some inspo if you want! Anything goes!

Day 4: Lyrics & Poetry — We love seeing things like this in the fandom and we want to see some more! Find a quote of some sort, whether it comes from a song or a poem or even somewhere else, and let it inspire you into creating something beautiful to celebrate Clarke! This could be in the form of gifs, moodboards, fanart, even a songfic! Whatever you want to create, we want to see!

Day 5: Bi Pride — It's not Clarke Griffin Appreciation Week without bi pride day! As always, we'd love to see all the bi love whether it's with a bi flag inspired gifset, a moodboard with cute bi aesthetics, maybe you could even use some lyrics from your fave bi musician as inspo! (Gentle reminder that this day is about bi positivity, we're here to celebrate Clarke's role as a bi leading character!)

Day 6: Halloween — The holiday is right around the corner and we'd love to see some fun and spooky ideas! You could do something orange and black themed, you can make an AU edit like Clarke as a witch or a werewolf! Maybe a manip of what you think Clarke would dress up as. You could also do some spooky horror-inspired editing if that's your thing. Even a Halloween drabble if you feel like writing instead. We hope you have fun with this one!

Day 7: Free Day — As always, we're going to end the week by giving you free rein to do whatever you like for the final day! If you have an extra idea or something you've been meaning to post, now's the chance to do it! It can be funny or shippy or completely AU or even just another compilation of your favorite Clarke moments! It's the last day so we want to see what you love to make!

there's someone in one of my fandoms who makes gifsets and photosets of non-canon F/F ships that will constantly add after the text description "this is a femslash post, please do not tag as 'brotp'" and while i can understand why that might be annoying if that happens a lot in something listed as "character/character" (which to me is inherently shippy in that context) i also feel like after a certain point you have to stop caring what strangers on the internet do in their reblogs of the content you put for free online, or just turn off reblogs if you want to control that, a thing we can do now.

also, i looked on their old posts before they started doing this and it was like two people at most tagging it "brotp." they're also people who are constantly combative about what people put in the tags for characters they like and idk, i just think some people need to get a grip

Just put shippy text in the actual images part and people can't get rid of it easily.

Very excited to see you excited, don't worry! A lot of FOB fans are very DL about liking particularly those two in a shippy way because we're all older and trying to be normal and people haven't always been normal about it, but my inner 14 year old still lives and she needs to see people like yourself lose their minds over these small gestures that mean the world to me. Shipping aside, because this whole band means the world to me and I'm a little anxious, I'm always secretly worried they're more colleagues than friends, so Patrick mentioning in that interview how they've learned and internalized how important it is to stay *friends* and not just be [voice full of disdain, the way Patrick says it] business associates, is so important to me. Sorry for the little ramble! In short, I'm so happy about it all.

Buckle in, this gets rambly and is probably completely unnecessary for the response you were looking for OH, WELL, THAT'S ME RIGHT NOW.

I am also always very worried that they might not actually like each other and it's all for show, and then I think: Why should I care? You know? Like, I write a lot of fiction about these two that I know is fiction, so why should THAT be the fiction that bothers me, that they don't actually like each other at all and it's one big massive performance?

And I think partly it's because what we want from bands is some little reflection of the joy that they give to *us,* you know? Like, you want the people in your band to love the band as much as you do. And sometimes it just doesn't feel that way. But you cling to the hope that no, no, they love hanging out at concerts as much as you love going to them. Think of that gifset where Pete says something like, "When people tell me my band saved their life, I get it, because my band kind of saved my life, too." That's such a compelling thing to say because that's an acknowledgment, like, I get why you think this band is important. It's important to me, too. And it's important for fans to feel like their band members find the band important. Our relationship with music is always an intimate relationship, and so it heightens how we view the bands we follow. They're with us at the most intense moments of our lives, and we want it to be mutual. You know? And this is why we want so badly for these people to really like each other, because we really like them, and isn't it so great when everybody is happy together?????

All of that wishful thinking established, I do think Pete and Patrick are genuinely friends. I think friendship looks different in your late 30s and early 40s than it does in your 20s, especially once you have kids. You talk to your friends less and you see them less but you still consider them friends, even if you only get to have dinner twice a year, even if you only text every so often. Pete clearly has a lot of friends he hangs out with a lot, golfing and playing tennis and going to theme parks and whatever else he's always running around doing. None of these friends ever seem to be Patrick. Patrick...doesn't seem to ever leave his house hahahaha. Or at least is very private about doing so. And so it's always hard to know how much hanging out they're ever actually doing, because it tends to seem to happen in secret, and we only ever see the end result of it.

But over the years I've gleaned a lot of stuff about how they interact to make me realize that Patrick just isn't that guy who does a lot of the random hanging out that Pete seems to thrive on. Like, Pete has a line in an interview somewhere where he says something like, "I figured out if I wanted to see Patrick we had to get together and write, because he doesn't just hang out." But it wasn't said like Patrick doesn't hang out because Patrick doesn't like Pete, just that that's not who Patrick is. And Patrick also says something in an interview at some point where he's like, "I will never go to anything but Pete always invites me and I always appreciate that." Idk, they feel like two people who each understand how the other operates and it works for them. Like, that's what makes it feel less performative to me. They aren't out for the cameras a whole lot. But they write a bunch of music and they kid around on stage.

Pete's clearly a savvy guy who figured out a long time ago that he could play up the relationship between him and Patrick and it would be A Thing, and he could still be doing that. When he posts sentimental little pictures of the two of them, when he wishes him happy birthday, when he talks about destiny because his grandfather was stationed on the U.S.S. Stump, like, this could all be performative stuff to keep that fanbase going, and that's all fine.

But I also think that's just because it's performative doesn't mean it's not true. You know when you're young and you have a close friend and you think that the two of you are just the best, cleverest, funniest people in the entire universe? And then you *perform* that for everyone to see? That feels like Pete and Patrick when they were young. And I bet you no longer perform that with your person. But that doesn't necessarily mean you stopped being friends with them. You just grew up a little bit and stopped performing as much. Or, if you're Pete Wentz, you never outgrew performing and just do it in a different way.

Someone said to me at one point that people have been saying Pete and Patrick secretly hate each other for as long as there has been a Fall Out Boy (in the same way that Fall Out Boy has been sellouts for as long as there has been a Fall Out Boy). If they hate each other, they have put up with that hate for a looooong time at this point. They had zero reason to put out another album right now, after this long break. They might be desperate for money but they shouldn't be, given all their side gigs. It's a lot of effort to keep pretending to like someone you don't like. Or at least don't like all that much. I doubt either of them feels like doing it at this point in their lives.

Idk that they loom as large in each other's imaginations as I think they probably used to, but that's just growing up. I think they *do* appreciate each other in different ways, and that is *also* growing up. But yeah, all the same, it's always nice to see them really look like they like each other. I could actually go on and on with the evidence I have gathered of instances where they act like people that are friends because it's so important to me, but this is already way too long, but anyway, yeah, I think they're friends, not just colleagues, and that's nice because it's always nice to think your band likes itself as much as you do.

(Also, like, the shippy thing, I have a whole ~~thing about how our society's emphasis on romantic love being The One True Value devalues all other relationships in our lives and that's why when we see people have important relationships we kneejerk ship them because we've been trained by society to think that's the only way people can value each other and I do think that's an important thing that is definitely at play in shipping but I write so many shipping stories that I don't feel I have a leg to stand on to actually interrogate that hahahaha I can just say, "Yes, society has done this to me, I am just perpetuating the problem, oops")

In my point of view Padme and Obi Wan saw each other in those 10years between episode I and II, I think between that time they were at least “work friends”, and anyway in rots she trusts him more than her own husband. It’s a shame they deleted their scenes in episode III, but the novel makes it absolutely clear that she trusts him over all the Jedis and most senators, I do think she admires him

Hello nonny, I guess you are talking about this gem over at @cypanache 's blog.

To say that Obi only tolerated Padmé diminishes both of their characters. It lessens Obi's respect for Padmé and belittles the trust Padmé put in the older Jedi.

I am not even talking about shipping here. Above all Obi & Pad have at least a work friendship but imho more of a familiar bond.

Palpatine persuades Padmé in AotC by telling her she could get 'someone you're familiar with, an old friend' as a protector. At this point, it's been 10 years!

Idk about you but I wouldn't exactly call someone I met 10 years ago at a work thing an old friend. There has to be a bit more in between TPM and AotC for Palpatine to think they are friends. And for Padmé to concur so readily. Again, I am not talking shippy things. But to think that Padmé and Obi-Wan haven't done anything worthwhile in those ten years is ridiculous.

If you look at their meeting in AotC you notice how pleased they are to meet again. There has been a wonderful gifset going around some years ago where you could see exactly how pleased. I love gifsets for small nuances like that because of course things like that can be overlooked when you watch a movie.

And even if you want to go by only what you see on screen: Padmé is the one who wants to rescue Obi-Wan from Dokuu.

In Episode III we have Obi-Wan gently trying to pry the needed information out of Padmé. He talks very softly and is empathetic to her. After the Ani and Obi confrontation, we have Obi bringing Padmé to Bail and getting her medical attention. We have the birth scene and the way Obi stays with her. Is he doing it out of duty? For Anakin? Padmé? All of the above.

This is more than just "Yeah, there is this chick my mentee is dating" and don't get me started on things like their Deleted Scenes, Karen Miller's Wild Space or Matthew Stower's novelization.

Just a quick quote for everyone who hasn't read the RotC novelization by Matthew Stover. It plays out right after this scene, which was deleted.

“One Jedi, then,” Padme offered to the others. “There is one Jedi - one whom I truly know all of us can trust absolutely…” Her voice trailed off into appalled silence when she realized that she wasn’t talking about Anakin. This had been all about him when she’d started (…) but when the thought had turned to trust, when it became a question of someone she knew, truly and absolutely knew, she could trust — she discovered that she was talking about Obi-Wan.“

And Karen Miller goes even further and implies, by showing Padmé and Obi-Wan from Bail's and Palpatine's PoV's, that they appear like a couple at least two people who are connected by more than just acquaintanceship.

Anyway.

As you said nonny, I think Padmé admires Obi-Wan. But I also think it's mutual admiration and respect even if they don't share the same opinions on a lot of political stuff.

I have a lot to say about what GL did with Obi-Wan and Padmé. And I am of the firm belief that in this rare case a love triangle would've made more sense storywise.

I also think, and this is very unpopular, that Clone Wars did with Obi-Wan and Satine, what Obidala could've been and GL was just too cowardly to write into his movies *shrug emoji*

I will stop talking now before people start throwing stones at me. Thanks for the ask. I always love to talk about my OTP in any capacity.

Incomplete

I like reading shippy fics featuring Din. Primarily Boba, but Luke will do in a pinch given it's more popular. Part of why I like them is because it's nice to see Din find someone he can trust enough to show his face.

However.

Canon-wise I prefer him on his own. While I still love the idea of him finding people he can trust and expanding his little clan (or becoming part of someone else's) it's also nice to see a competent character who doesn't need romantic entanglements in order to be considered "complete."

Unfortunately Western media, as a general rule, seems compelled to force characters into relationships for "demographic" purposes and/or because there's a mindset that anyone who doesn't fall in romantic love with another person must be sad and lonely and missing something vital from their life.

Season 2 had some good moments, but it also had some... let's say "troubling" plot points. It was enough to make me leery of continuing to watch and that feeling has been cemented now that I've seen gifsets and commentary about season 3.

In my opinion Din works best as a guy struggling to do the right thing who keeps bumbling his way into situations that saddle him with more and more responsibilities. He wants what's best for his kid, he wants what's best for his people, and he wants to be able to take a nap in peace without everything falling apart when he closes his eyes.

He's awesome as a Reluctant Hero type and it's fun to watch him accidentally acquire friends and allies as he goes along. But I don't think he needs to add "love interest" to his collection. Platonic and familial love are enough.

Of course I suppose my opinion is moot since, A) I stopped watching and B) I'm only a fan and now a showrunner so I have no say in what happens. I just really REALLY wish Hollywood would stop trying to play matchmaker and perpetuating the myth that being in a relationship is a necessary part of growth and fulfillment.

Anyway, folks still seem to be happy with the show so I can be happy for them. I wish nothing but the best for Pedro and company (minus the gibbering idiots running the show). I'll have to look for my impossible content somewhere else.

I'm an absolute sucker for enemies/frenemies to lovers. My favourite ship dynamic is to involve some element of conflict to start with and then they can't help but lust after each other and/or fall in love (with ongoing flares of feistiness). I think I've made this a little difficult at times with God of Stories (Variant) because he's a lot softer and tends to show up either talking about High Stakes or approaches more gently, so I try to have him gradually regain his mischief elements whilst balancing playing God of Mischief (OG Loki) who's still a lot snarkier and finds it easier to misbehave.

That said, I would love to work on expanding Loki's relationships for adjacent partners so he can be that asshole brother/in-law in the background and also play around with being a traditional Loki antagonist. I usually like to give him the shippy wish fulfilment he'll never get in canon but there's a reason we like him also being a blaffy comic book villain/anti-hero. Maybe I should kidnap a hero soon.

The first thing is whether I have time for another partner with the schedule I have. Then it's whether I'm interested in the muse, which generally falls into a category of how well I know them, whether I think I have stories to tell with them, and whether I'm attracted to them (because sadly yes shipping is a big part of my experience here and if I'm not feeling it, it's hard for my Loki to do so). This last one is of course negated when it's a child or relative muse (my thorki/helki interests aside).

The next stage of the vetting process is the mun. Is there actually role-playing going on here with examples of writing or is it just months of gifsets and/or negative ooc comments. Is there a bunch of drama? The first few pages of a blog and especially the Rules page can give me a good indication. We're all human, we have bad patches, sometimes we've only just started out, but if you've just followed me and there's nothing on your blog that's telling me I'll vibe with you or that you'll stick around and develop things with me, I'm not liable to bite. I get that it's a bit unfair that I can rarely write with a newbie because of this. I need to see examples of writing. I'm a seasoned role-player and my autistic brain can only handle a certain amount of grammatical mistakes or lack of enthusiasm or love in what you create. If you don't love what you're doing, if you need me to reassure your insecurities, it's not gonna work.

Aesthetics are low down on the list for me, although I will get very put off if I feel like you're more focused on making your writing look pretty; using fanciful words; and doing massive text walls of prose that either do nothing to progress the story or godmod your partners six way to Sunday than making this a team story effort. Plus, I'm an old fart now and I use desktop so I struggle with tiny writing on blogs and have to read everything on the dash view XD

1. Do you have a word-count goal for the upcoming year?

I'd like to get to 150k again, I managed last year despite not having that much time to write (well... It was a lot less than the 500k of the year before, so there's that), but I'm also not gonna be mad if I don't make it

Still, I like having a goal to work towards to motivate me to keep going and to post some fics that I maybe would've pushed into the ever growing draft pile otherwise (I'm only counting published fics via looking at the Ao3 wordcount)

4. Do you think you’ll stop writing for a fandom this year? Which one?

Uhh I don't plan to! I have a bunch of fandoms that I've written less for lately (Gunpowder Milkshake, The Old Guard), the former probably bc the fandom hasn't made anything to keep me in the shippy feels and inspired to make more, the latter idk a bit of the same and also it just isn't such an obsession anymore... But I think I'll probably still write a bunch for them both!

10. Will you keep a record of all the fics you write and or post this year?

Well, I'll probably post them all to Ao3?

13. Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic?

Definitely manips, maybe some moodboards again as it's been a while, and I want to get back into making longer podfics, I'm planning to make one for Mirandy, not 100% sure which one yet, maybe Jigsaw though it feels a bit eerie to make a podfic to a fic by someone who's apparently deceased, or so I heard? I usually ask the writers first whether they'd mind getting podficced, so here... Just, idk 😅

17. Do you typically answer all comments/reviews individually? Do you plan to change the way you interact with your readers this year?

I try to! Currently have 200 unreads though so there's that 🙈 they're not actually unread of course, I've seen and loved them all but replying takes time especially if I don't just want to reply 'thx!' to every comment but actually reply to what they wrote... And as I didn't have the time for a while it just builds up and now it'd Really take time to reply to them all... Currently my goal is just to get it back below 200 xD replying to some of the more recent ones soon, and also whenever I post an update to a fic or a sequel or something I check the last chapter/part for any unanswered comments so I can reply to those without the pressure of replying to All of the unanswered comments, and so I can let them know there's more for that story :) don't really plan to change anything here, I just keep trying not to let it stress me out too much, while replying to comments is definitely a nice and friendly thing to do and all, fandom shouldn't turn into a chore imo

I was going to fill out a survey about my TV-watching habits, but then I realized...I have a seive-like brain (now more than ever, considering that I watch things almost exclusively on streaming services and have little to no idea what is even currently airing on television), and my time would be better served just organizing the list I more-or-less kept track of throughout the year and trying to make some sense of it.

NCIS: LA: 13x08 (oh, wow, I meant to watch at least a couple more highlight eps...but really, I am now a shippy-gifsets-only kind of girl)

Redneck Island: 3x02-03; 1x02-09 (bless you late night syndication and insomnia lmao)

The Terminal List: 1x01 (I really did mean to continue, but then Matt Barr knocked Chris Pratt Owen Grady off the top of Handsome Mountain so now we're waiting until I am back in the groove of finding this man attractive under the right circumstances)

Conclusions:

Favorite show of the year is hands-down bar-none Blood & Treasure, but Abbot Elementary is a close second. The best reality show this year is definitely The Amazing Race. And among the older shows, Maid is fantastic and very much worth your time/my leading favorite among them.

Best comfort-food sitcoms: Ghosts, United States of Al, Family Reunion, Enlisted and The Exes are all a warm delight.

Also, doesn’t qualify as a comfort-food one but Mythic Quest is surprisingly entertaining, for someone who’s never played a MMORPG in her life and whose last video game attempts were done on a PS2. I just hate the language (and Ian).

And all of the rewatches, obviously, sheer perfection. *chef’s kiss*

#if I hadn't kept track of this list I would literally remember like...10 shows maximum #gotta catch up on Big Sky and La Brea at some point #(honestly I also have to catch up on Ghosts; I think I only got 4 episodes into season 2 before I got distracted?#which is fine. binge watching is the way to go with that one)#year in review

Hey everyone!! The Advisory Council has decided to open up AQ to more content besides fic: anything inspired by fic, of course, but also things that are just generally shippy. Here are a few links to the kind of content we’re looking for: example 1, example 2, example 3.

Hi, I want to talk for a minute about the tagging—or rather mistagging—in the fandom, especially in the Ironhusbands/Tony&Rhodey fandom.

There is no nicer way to put it but: some of you seriously need to learn the difference between platonic love and romantic love.

I’m at a point now, where every time I see some Rhodey&Tony content I have no clue if this is about a ship or them just being friends because everyone I follow tags it as a ship. And then, when I go to OP’s post to confirm it myself, I sometimes find out that it was never intended as such. So, I reblog it and tag them as characters separately, yet people who reblog it from me add the ship tag. Why the fuck would you do that? Why the fuck do you think I didn’t tag it as a ship myself?

A friend of mine once accidentally tagged a Tony&Nat post as ship because she clicked on the wrong tag and got five seconds later an anon in her inbox telling her she did wrong. No one does that with RhodeyTony. And I don’t know if y’all are afraid you’d be called a racist or the sorts if you point it out, but I, as a content creator myself, would hate it if you misinterpreted my post this much, you’d look at something as a ship that clearly wasn’t intended as such—or the other way around.

It literally happened once when I posted a snippet of a fic and tagged it as Pepperony—because that’s what the actual ship of the fic is, even though Pepper didn’t have an appearance in the snippet—and someone who reblogged it from me, the source, tagged it as RhodeyTony. Not only is this incredibly rude towards me, but also must your reading comprehension be lacking, because if you read the words ‘best friend’ and think I’m talking about romantic love here, then maybe you and your best friend need to have a talk.

You also tell me indirectly that way that I don’t know how to write the difference between friendship and romantic relationship, which is bullshit, because I know perfectly well how to write both, fuck you very much. Maybe you need to read a little bit more platonic fics and look at the way you interact with your friends, if you can’t tell the difference anymore.

The same goes the other way too, btw. I know for a fact that a friend got their ship fic tagged as platonic although it even states at the beginning that it’s a ship. If you don’t like the ship, then don’t read it. But don’t you dare to dismiss OP’s intentions like this and make of it what you want.

Look, I am honestly very happy that the Ironhusbands fandom is rising. Everyone who follows me knows I like the ship. I like to read it and I like to write it myself.

Doesn’t mean I don’t want to enjoy some platonic Rhodey&Tony too.

Why do people now start to put a ship tag on everything? I have yet to see a gifset with Tony&Clint interaction to be tagged as IronHawk, for example, but if there is a gif with Tony and Rhodey everyone just tags it as a ship—which doesn’t even make sense, unless it’s clearly edited as such. Same goes for so much art wherein the artist simply wanted to draw Tony and Rhodey during their MIT times as best friends and yet everyone just looks at it in a shippy way.

Not only do you make platonic love that way seem lesser, which in itself is problematic, because platonic love, having friends, is just as, if not more, important as romantic love—but also are you dismissing the wishes of the content creators and their intentions.

Please stop mistagging ships. If you’re not sure if it’s meant as a ship or not—you’re literally just one click away from finding it out. The source’s tags will tell you what it’s meant to be. You’re doing nothing but disrespecting OP by ignoring their intentions.

And yes, that’s a problem in fandom in general. I’m still mostly talking about the Ironhusbands fandom here, because that’s where it’s most prominent at the moment. But what I just stated here goes for any ship.

Just, please, learn to tag correctly. And the difference between romantic love and platonic love too while you’re at it. Because the latter is important too.

Will you only reblog Bobannec stuff?

No, I’ll also reblog posts that are more focussed on Boba and Fennec individually or just on their partnership in a non-romantic way. This is more to make sure the queue doesn’t dry up. I’m not trying to find *all* Boba fanarts, but I am trying to find and reblog *all* fanarts of Boba X Fennec together. I will also reblog things that include Boba and Fennec in a non-shippy way. So, for example, fanart of the squad that includes Mando, Boba, Fennec, Cara, etc. I will not likely reblog content that’s very very clearly made for another ship. So if it’s Cara x Fennec and Boba is in the fanart, for example, I probably won’t reblog it.

Favourite Male Character

You mean...besides the obvious answers?? :D

Ngl, it's S2 Jerome. I love that little twink with his parental issues and his tragic backstory and I wanna see him happy. There's a reason I have a bunch of AUs where he ends up having a family (mostly in the form of Lee as his Mother) and gets some actual help instead of being ostracized for being a mentally ill person snapping after years of abuse.

(This also ties into my very strong feelings regarding the fact that nobody actually helps the people at Arkham. And I don't mean the main villains there, I mean all the inmates who get treated like shit and are left behind on the regurlar (remember in S2 when Arkham was about to explode and nobody was talking about evacuating the inmates???? I do).

Other than that, one of my faves is also Jonathan. Which may be a little surprising because I barely talk about him but he was my favourite character throughout the show and he had way too little scenes.

(Kinda telling that the characters I latched onto are both helpless teens who were fucked over by the people who were supposed to protect them and can both trace their villain origin story back to Jim Gordon not caring enough about them lmao).

But the cast is big and varied enough that I actually like everyone? Butch, Zsazs, Penguin, S1 and 2 Ed, Jervis, Harvey, Jim......I like them all!!

(Special shoutout to 514A too, he was soft and baby and I wanted to keep him safe and sound really desperately).

(Another special shoutout to Barnes!! I didn't expect to like him when I first saw him, given he looked like he was gonna be mean and stoic and all, but I ended up really liking him and his story!)

Favourite Female Character

Let's just pretend Ecco doesn't exist for this answer ajdkaskaslj.

I fell in love immediately upon seeing Ecco but all! the women! are so!!! good!!!!

I especially have a soft spot for the side characters. I mean, upon first watching I got attached to Alice (even though she only features in two episodes lmao), and also Kristen Kringle - who isn't talked about much within Fandom, but she was pretty and her and Ed were actually quite cute but then she had to die for him to become the Riddler which was...pretty much telling us from the beginnning 'The woman here die to advance the men's plots'.

Barbara was also a big surprise to me because I figured she'd be the female love interest and nothing more but!! her and Jerome were the best thing in S2 and also the most entertaining thing about the Maniax Plot. (In several ways, I think I had the most fun watching this show during S2 , it was just. Good).

Also upon being in this Fandom and thinking about certain characters a bit longer I also really like Vicky Vale. And Montoya. And I wish they had kept both around for longer.

(I also wish they wouldn't have made Vicky a love interest for Jim. Or Sofia. No love interests for Jim except Lee and Barbara please).

Also Selina!! I love both Selina and Tabitha with all my heart - which may also be surprising because I barely ever talk about Tabby but I contain multitudes aklskddsm, and while I like sharing my horny thoughts about Ecco, I also love to think about Tabby and daydream about her being happy and exploring her (and Selina's) issues with showing weakness and affection and their strong loyalty regarding people that they trust.

I just.....women. Women good.

(Women also deserve to have more character than just being somebody's love interests and I have enough wips that completely sideline the guys to focus on the woman instead lmao).

Least Favourite Character

I don't have many characters that I hate??

I generally tend to instantly love everybody unless they are specifically made to be unlikeable. (I also spite-like characters who are hated for petty reasons, I just have a lot of love in my heart and not much energy for hate lmao).

But there were characters who annoyed me while I was watching.

For one, I think Gotham has a variety of super entertaining villains, but the main villains of each season tend to be....boring.

Safe for Strange they all kinda fell flat for me. Theo. Kathryn. Ra's Al Ghul. His Daughter. Mostly because their plotlines were less exciting than stuff like Jerome's carnival or Mother and Orphan's Hotel of Horrors.

Or their motives seemed a lot less understandable than the ones of the other Batman villains who pretty much always come from a place of suffering and abuse and break/snap under the pressure that's put on them (continuing this take of Gotham creating its own villains by leaving behind - mentally ill - people that need help, which I think is very true to most - if not all - Batman villains).

And then you have some characters that simply suffer from the fact that the show was cut short - which is pretty much any and every S5 character that had way too little screentime, but in this specific case means Jeremiah.

Because I disliked Jeremiah a lot while watching.

Without wanting to step on anybody's toes, him and Nygma are probably the two characters on this show I ended up disliking the most.

Mostly because Miah felt like a very cheap copy of Jerome and to this day I think it was a bad idea to replace Jerome with him, since Jeremiah - to me - seems like a super flat character.

Maybe if we had gotten him without meeting Jerome first, just having a Joker character introduced in S4, maybe I would've adored him, who knows.

But in comparison to Jerome...no. Just no.

(I will spare you from any longer rambles, but I think if you follow me, I talked about the ways Miah is lacking for me before).

My made up version of Miah though? I love him.

With Nygma it's even worse because I adored him. I instantly liked him. I was 100% behind him right up until the godawful Isabella plot happened and then it just all went to shit so quickly, I couldn't stand seeing him on screen anymore.

It's surprising that I didn't stop liking Oswald but to me, Oswald pretty much stayed the same while Ed became all bitter and hard and I just miss dorky S2 Ed you know?

It actually got so bad, I completely turned my back on Nygm/obblepot as a ship because I was so severly disappointed and I barely talk about Ed because I just can't stand what they did with him.

(Another victim of bad writing).

Favourite Ship

I'm just gonna stick to canon ships because I don't ever shut up about my Fanon ships so you probably know which ones I love the most :D

There isn't much romance going on within Gotham if I think about it - apart from Jim - which I definitely prefer. You wouldnt guess it from my blog, but I am not a fan of too shippy stuff because in most cases it just means sex scenes and I can live without those. I want action! Blood! Dead People! Not a two minute make-out session between two bland characters!

I gotta admit that Ed and Lee have some cute scenes and I would definitely ship them if I didn't dislike S4 Ed so much (S2 EdLee tho?? Yes).

Also I thought Jim and Lee was okay and Baby Batcat was quite cute at times but mostly I don't care about the canon ships.

I do ship Barbara and Jim though :D

I remember right before they hooked up in S5 I was like: 'I wouldn't mind if they got back together' and then went 'yay!' when they did and I wouldn't have minded a little more 'Will they?? Won't they??' between those two and them just having the mother of unhealthy relationships on this show.

(Also Jim/Barbara/Lee poly relationship but we can't have everything).

Favourite Friendship

So many good relationships on this show!

I need to rewatch the show soon because I probably already forgot about most of them but from the top of my head: Oswald/Butch and Oswald/Zsazs

Which were both then done dirty lmao. One by having Oswald be overly petty (one of the few times I was like...Pengy...wtf...) and the other by passing up the obvious opportunity to have Zsazs find out who really killed Falcone and just...letting Oswald and Victor never interact again.

Then of course Ivy and Selina which also gloriously fell apart. Just like Ivy and Oswald.

(Gotham isn’t the best when it comes to maintaining friendships).

And the biggest and most grandious friendship of them all: J Squad.

(Who have too little scenes together honestly and then also simply fell apart after Jerome died. Consistency who?)

Favourite Quote

I don’t know, I don’t have many quotes in my head from the show. Me and my niece mostly reference: “Yeah, that’s a spoon.” - “IT IS ALSO A FORK!!1!!!”

Also: “Gotta Go! Gotta Go! They’re after me and the Scarecrow!”

(There are some dialogue blurps I have written down somewhere because they are inspriration for gifsets but in order to be able to just recite some of them from Memory, I would have to watch this show way more obsessively).

Worst Character Death

I don’t even gotta say anything do I? :D

But I think the character death that actually made me cry was Jerome’s first death. I clearly remember crying because...he just wanted recognition! And praise! And instead he was used as a pawn and betrayed by someone he idolized and he was only 18! My poor little meow-meow!

Seriously, the only things that make me cry on this show: Jerome’s first death, any and all mention of Bruce as a baby - told by an emotional Alfred, any and all Bruce/Alfred interaction at all and Solomon Grundy.

I seriously need to rewatch this show, it’s been so long :D

But I remember being pretty excited for the J Squad Team Up - because I was like ‘If I were Jerome I would definitely work with Tetch and Scarecrow since they’re also in Arkham atm’ and then he did!!

And I also distinctly remember in S3 that I was close to falling asleep right when they scene came on where Oswald realizes his feelings for Nygma and let me tell you - it caught me so off guard, I was awake instantly lmao.

(I knew that people shipped them but I was so used to mlm ships being popular when they only have a handful of scenes and are platonic friends that I didn’t expect them to actually have a possibility of being canon).

From then on I was super pumped for them to deliver on that ship but well....we all knew what happened asnksnndk.

Saddest Moment

Aside from the already mentioned scenes in the character death column, the scene where Bruce leaves and Selina runs to the airport. I always liked Selina but she wasn’t a priority character of mine (much like Bruce isn’t) but then that scene happened and in an instant, I felt super protective over her.

She is now my baby. My daughter. My beloved wife. She deserves everything and most importantly she deserves better than Bruce Wayne.

(Coincidentally that was also the scene where I decided I don’t care much about Bruce asldjkjlj. I absolutely adore early seasons Bruce though).

Favourite Location

There are so many different locations, I don’t think I can adequately answer this with my spotty memory :D

But I always loved the few episodes where Alice features, because I love how her scenes are shot so probably the little carnival Jervis prepares for her.

Also!! Jeremiah's church!

Or Commissioner Loeb's secret house (Especially the Attic).

*cracks knuckles* okay let’s see if any of these particular intellectual muscles still work.

I am always pro-cas-being-canonically-dickish posts (even if they are misleading one way or another, more on that later) because dear GOD this fandom loves to infantalize the man. He’s a “baby in a trenchcoat.” He’s dumb about pop culture and clueless about human things isn’t it adorable? SHUT UP!!!! And pls especially shut up if you’re using his ignorance as a way of making another character look cool or smart by comparison. “it’s a shortened version of my name” was 100% Cas fucking with Dean because he is a dick sometimes! and it’s great! Also: Cas’s indifference to pop culture isn’t a weakness just because pop culture knowledge is a major currency on tumblr!!! It’s indicative of the fact that he’s got much bigger and more important things on his mind. (Also. listen. This trait was canonically erased by Metatron and it was literally the only good thing that fucking character ever did so can we please as a fandom just acknowledge that little slice of canon? pls?)

(Can I also just say.....fish out of water stories are only good when they are on the side of the fish and not just using the fish to make jokes. Just. as a note on the trope in general but specifically re: every time this shows up in fanfic with Cas or any other similar character. Thor comes to mind.)

Anyway Cas isn’t a child, he’s ANCIENT and TIRED and CONFLICTED about major moral issues, which is FASCINATING for an angel character and forces us as an audience to consider more deeply the actual differences between heaven and hell, good and evil, destiny and free will. Is this how we expect an angel to behave? What does this tell us about Heaven? If Cas is an aberration, what does that tell us about Heaven and goodness and God? So his expressions of anger and frustration and his impatience with or indifference to human courtesies are a really great part of his character and people should appreciate them more (and not just when it’s funny!)

(Sidenote bc I always think about this when I think about fandom and Cas, the reductive fandom approach to “””crazy!cas””” (what a fun way of saying “deeply affected by horrible trauma and guilt and trying to repress it so he can function.” thanks for that fandom) as comic relief or a woobified victim is. hm. bad. That’s all I’ll say about that one.)

{ANOTHER sidenote, this one for fan artists in particular but fan writers definitely aren’t free from sin: Cas isn’t pale or short and he isn’t a fuckin twink pls stop projecting weird m/f stereotypes onto your queer ships pls and thank}

ANYWAY about these screenshots specifically: Listen I love this post but the context of these scenes is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than Cas being a dick to Sam. They aren’t really about Sam at all, actually. “Don’t ask stupid questions” is such a painful fucking response to Sam asking if he’s okay, because he’s clearly not okay--he’s still struggling with the knowledge that God has given up and abandoned them--but he can’t be vulnerable about it. So he redirects to ask what Sam needs from him because that’s what he does, it’s what he is, he’s a tool. He’s a solution to problems (except his own). And his unwillingness to confront his pain (while also not being able to hide it) isn’t really about his relationship with Sam, it’s about his relationship with God and with himself and his own failures. The visibility of that struggle while he continues to try to help in this episode is just really fucking moving, okay?

Also there’s absolutely nothing hostile about “Sam, of course, is an abomination” in context. Like. Not a damn thing. There’s a task that needs to be performed by a “servant of heaven,” and Cas is explaining why none of the three of them qualify, and we know he feels shame about the fact that HE doesn’t qualify by how he reacts later, calling himself a poor example of an angel. He’s as much an abomination as Sam is in this moment.

Actually you know what? Literally everything in these screenshots that gets interpreted as “Cas hates Sam” is 100% actually Cas hating himself. He hates Sam’s voice while he’s stuck using a human voice himself to communicate, through technology he’s hostile to because it’s limiting compared to angelic communication. He rejects Sam’s compassion because he doesn’t want to talk about his own weakness. He calls Sam an abomination in the same breath that he acknowledges that he isn’t a servant of heaven anymore, and with much less anger than when he later calls himself a poor example of an angel. He sees himself in Sam but he hates himself too much to use that as a point of connection and pushes away from it instead. (I’m not going to go on a shipper detour here but sastiel shippers....you know)

So Cas is angry and complicated and self-hating and yeah, it’s funny, but if you don’t respect those feelings and their complexity, maybe don’t try to write Cas or write about him. Maybe if you only like Cas when he’s making you laugh you don’t actually like Cas.

And this isn’t to be like...”writing fluffy shippy fic with Cas being sweet is bad” or whatever. That fills a need for some people, I get it. I’ve written fic where he’s sweet! There’s a difference between someone lovingly wrapping a character in a blanket and going “nice things will happen for you now” versus using that character for a reductive joke.

There’s also a difference between people who are actually carefully writing fic and people who are, yknow, tagging posts or circulating meme-like gifsets with this kind of commentary. Which, bc I don’t read fic as often anymore, tends to be the most common way anything like analysis of Cas reaches me. I do NOT recommend this method of engaging with fandom because it’s really the worst, unfunniest, most simplistic takes that get repeated over and over again (I would pay money to never see anyone call Sam “moose” or “sammy” again dear lord), and it obscures the actually really good work some folks are doing when they write these characters.

tl;dr 1. Cas is not a child and he is not stupid. 2. Cas doesn’t hate Sam but he DOES project onto him and it’s fascinating. 3. fandom wants to be transformative but bc of meme culture and the way tumblr works it can be painfully reductive and it’s exhausting

ps nb I haven’t watched a single episode since they killed Charlie off and I don’t know much about what happened after that lol. so don’t come at me “well actuallying” bc honestly I don’t care and bc canon has been a dumpster fire for years and all extended analysis of it including my own is really nonsense just by virtue of the source material being nonsense.

pps the showrunners are ABSOLUTELY complicit in this but I can’t. I just cannot get into that. I am too tired.
