you know what's so disappointing? the way people keep saying 'don't be afraid to portray mental illness and disability in media!! in your art and writing!!! normalise it and don't shun it!!!' and then the MOMENT you bring up a symptom that's too messy and uncomfortable to handle, they take a fuckin u-turn and go "UM no that's bad. like. you're a bad person if you do that. that's weird and it makes me uncomfortable so it's wrong."
here's the thing!!!!!!! it's not convenient!!!!! it's not simple!!!! i can't be honest and keep writing about how depression paints your whole world blue and all that shit!!!!!! because guess what!!!! depression and disabilities and borderline personality disorder and SO many other things are just. not neat and clean or easily consumable. they WILL make you uncomfortable and sad. they WILL make you feel bad. honesty is not easy. it's not meant to be.
and dehumanisation of sociopaths and psychopaths is genuinely distressing. not all of them!!! are!!!! bad people!!! it's a medical condition!!!! a mental illness!!! a person's illness doesn't make them bad. their actions and the decisions they take decide that and I am SO sick and tired of people watering down every complex human trait and toxic behaviour as good and bad and right and wrong. don't you see!!! some things are simply just. human. that's all. people fuck up. badly, sometimes. but that doesn't mean they are not people. I'm not saying you should forgive everyone and become a full time saint. you are entitled to your anger. i'm just asking you: don't take away a person's right to err and still be considered human. not all actions fall in the neat divisions of right and wrong. some things just are. grow some balls if you want to see true suffering in media. because it is Not easy or pretty. not even close. you will be conflicted and uncomfortable and troubled. make peace with that fact.

it was reaching two am in blüdhaven, the streets were still bustling with the noise of honking and people loudly communicating. the billboard lights keeping the city bathed in a vibrant glow, the building lights designed as makeshift stars.
two bodies sat high in the air, legs dangling over the side of an old gothic building. the gentle breeze played with loose hair and sunk into bones through the thick kevlar material. it cooled the blood rushing to your face as you worked on evening out your breath, domino mask staring into the cloudy night.
“ready to end the night?” your male companion's voice cut through the muffled noise. he sat beside you on the ledge, two pairs of feet swinging mindlessly.
you inhaled deeply through your nostrils and exhaled from parted lips. “just give me a few minutes,” your voice almost whispered.
nightwing shuffled his body closer, his outer thigh touching yours. he knocked his foot into yours and you copied in a silent reply. “you okay?” “yeah.”
“what would you be doing if you weren’t a crime fighter? what would your dream life look like?” an abrupt question seeping into your mind and spilling from your chapped lips.
hidden eyes moved away from the night sky to your partner. he was slightly hunched forward with his hands clasped in his lap, midnight black hair falling over his forehead with the tips poking around his eyes. he was biting into his bottom lip with a heavy silence hovering over him.
you weren’t sure what route would be best, backtracking to throw your words away or push forward to see if it would help him feel comfortable. the latter won out, so with nightwing’s tense body and shut mouth you turned back to the sky.
“i think if i didn’t end up here, none of the bad things ruined my life…i’d like to think i’d be living a super boring and normal life.” another glance at your companion, his head now looking at you with a slight crease to his forehead showing that he was raising his brows.
you shrugged, “i know it doesn’t seem like something i would want, but before…everything, i’ve never been in a fight. i kept to myself and followed the rules. kinda wish i could go back to being swallowed by the crowd.” chin tucked to your chest as you picked at the fabric on your thigh.
a beat or two passed. you worried that nightwing would look at you differently, probably think differently with just those few sentences. you were about to speak again when his deep voice caused your mouth to snap shut.
“when i was younger my family was part of a traveling circus. i like to think we’d still be a part of that small family we found with each other.”
your head moved up and you turned to see nightwing already looking at you. there was a faint quirk to his full lips as he said, “but i’m pretty happy where i’m at right now.”
and you couldn’t help that your mouth parted at his words, the implications as he was staring at you. nightwing pushed himself off the ledge and back onto the rooftop, you twisted to the left as he held a waiting hand out. his middle and ring fingers covered in blue made them stand out against the black.
“time to wrap the night up.” an angelic and smooth tone. his voice caused a shiver to rush up your spine. or the bitter wind. yeah, the wind.
swinging your right leg over to straddle the ledge as you happily took nightwing’s offered hand. his touch was warm and firm as you turned completely and your feet were back on solid ground. you tilted your head up to lock eyes with nightwing’s tall frame, peeks of his forehead showing due to the wind blowing past. he squeezed your hand and you realized neither of you let go. it caused another shiver to run freely.
“hey, you're shivering.” he pointed out and it made your face feel warm thinking he thought it was due to him. which it wasn't…
but nightwing just pulled you in close, his hand released from yours so he could wrap both his long and thick arms over your shoulders. then he started to rub his palms up and down your back, it made you melt and your lids flutter.
slowly and awkwardly you moved your arms into action and held onto the male’s waist tightly, your face pushing into his chest. neither of you said anything, acting like this sort of comfort and actions were part of your regular ‘hangouts’. but neither of you took a step to break away. you felt his chin dig into your scalp, tiny back-and-forth movements, his hands not stopping either.
“this is nice.” confessing just a sliver of your actual thoughts at the moment.
nightwing’s hum buzzed on your crown and then he simply stated, “we should do this more often.” and it lit a fire of wishing in your heart. you nuzzled further into his suit, burrowing into his natural body heat.
a dreamy smile tugged at your lips, “definitely should.”

Douma X Reader (Somewhat Modern)

Crazy City
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The night air was chilly. Although the lanky man walking didn't seem to mind. He admired the city. He doesn't come out much, in his little cave home that he took over. No one ever went that deep into the forest to ever really find it. He also opted to eating men too. Much to his dislike. But he does come to the city every once in awhile, just to see the improvements every human so thought was great for earth.
Although he thought it was crazy, much less for humans to advance this far. Tall skyscrapers, super cars, and different clothing.. very different. Catching a woman with h/c hair flowing with the small breezes that went by. She wore biker shorts, a black tank top, and a biker jacket. Holding a motorcycle helmet and seeming to be shoving through the crowds of people that also grew over the years.
You shoved your way through the crowd. You were supposed to meet your friend for dinner, but you ended up losing her in the heaps of people on the street. "Maki!" You attempted to call out, but it was no use. The cars were too loud, and the multiple conversations being held drowned out your soft voice.
You sighed. You didn't know which restaurant you were supposed to meet at either.
Rainbow eyes followed you the whole time. A couple meters behind you. A whiff of roses hit his nose every time you made sudden movements. It's been awhile since he's felt this way about anyone.
He had to have you. He stalked you a little longer before you come to a complete stop, bringing up your phone out of your pocket.
Meanwhile you cursed. Your phone was dead. You run a hand through your h/c locks and turn around, ever so slightly getting a small glance of the tall man. Thinking nothing of it, you walk the other way. Might as well backtrack. Maki could be waiting for you where you lost her.
You stop where you last remember seeing her. Suddenly someone bumps into you. "EY! Watch where you're going." The drunk slurred. He had the audacity to tell you, a stopped person, to watch out?
"Excuse me?" You looked at him funny, and he didn't like that.
"I said. Watch where you're going whore." You gasp.
"Okay buddy." You throw a punch at his face and he stumbles backwards. A few people made a couple "Oo's and Ah's."
"Mind your business people!" You called out before shoving past the drunkard.
He grabs your hand and pulls you back. You go to shove him off before a boney hand with long fingernails, that happened to be blue. Grab the mans hand and pulled them off of your wrist.
Your eyes snap towards the man. You narrow your eyes, as if you remembered seeing him earlier.
"Let me go!"
"I don't think I will be doing that." The ominous man responded, his grip tightening on the drunk man. He felt funny inside, he was angry at this man for bothering you. Ruining your walk and distracting you from focusing. You click your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
"I have this by myself." You shove the drunkard away, and he runs off. You turn towards the taller male. "Why are you following me?"
You finally get a good look at him. His clothes seemed to fit in. A red long sleeve with some nice dress pants. He looked well put together. His hair was rather long, and a little messy. He had a weird dye in his hair though, you found off. Although everyone was doing something weird with their hair anymore.
"Me? Following you?" He pointed to himself and you scoffed.
"I'm not stupid."
"You caught me." He holds his hands up playfully, the corners of his mouth turning up.
"Well?" You waited for an answer and he looked at you dumbly. "Oh my god never mind. Don't follow me." You turn on your heel to continue your adventure of being lost.
"Ah~ Wait." He catches up to you and starts walking with you. You look at him out of the corner of your eyes. "You seem lost."
"Ah so you noticed. I just lost my friend that's all." You tried your best to lose the man.
"Do you need help." In all honesty, he knew where your friend was.
"No." You continue to walk, the man also following along. You paid no mind to it, as he wasn't doing anything weird. But you were weary of the man, keeping your eyes peeled.
"Do you do this to everyone?"
"Only attractive ones."
You choked on your spit and your feet stuttered in movement. "Excuse me?" He laughed at your reaction and peered at your face.
"I think you're rather attractive." He repeated.
"Yeah yeah, I heard you." You swat your hand at him. You speed up and he seems to catch up easily. "Would you stop that, don't you have any friends or family to go too?"
He frowned slightly. No he didn't, not that he knew of. The rest of the demons were probably long gone, and he for sure did NOT have any family. "Not really."
"I can see why." You face palm. You needed a charger. Since there were stores all around, you walk into one. A weird clothing store. "Excuse me." You go to the main counter. "Do you have any phone charger?"
"No, sorry." The lady waved you off and you turned around. Eyes meeting a chest. "Why are you still- you know what, I don't care." Right now, finding your friend was first.
"Why are you so panicky? I'm sure your friend is alright." His voice was slightly soothing, a calm silky voice. Somewhat unsettling but you get the shabang.
"Because, I'm worried about her." Ah feelings, something he didn't understand totally still.
You walk, until you are at a more quiet area. A nice sidewalk path with trees arching over it. The moon light was now the only light, brightening the path.
The weird man still followed you. Maybe you should just go to her house. You two lived close, but you didn't want this guy to follow you all the way there. If she was there, she could be in danger too.
You've had your fair share of fights, but your friend was literally the girlest girl you knew.
The walk was silent. Douma was admiring you. The way you walked, making your hair bounce... and those.
"Well. I think it is time we part ways mister. I enjoyed your company for too long." He looked at you, unmoving.
"You can enjoy my company in a different way." He stepped a little closer to you and you back up.
"I-" Your breath hitched in your throat. Upon closer inspection, he was rather handsome.. His eyes though. Something you just happen to notice.
"Your eyes..?" You mumbled.
"You like them?" He teased. In all honesty, you did.
"What are they contacts?" you laughed.
"What are contacts?"
"What?" You deadpan. This guy seemed old-school. Just how old was this man anyway. He didn't look that old though, maybe 20-22. You raise a brow at him as he leaned down to reach eye level.
"What do you say? Want to take my offer." You scoff and turn to continue walking.
"You wouldn't be able to handle me." You said, the tension building up. Although you knew you were bluffing. You've only ever kissed someone, like what twice? You had no intention to do anything with this man... yet.
"Oh? Is that a challenge? Because I'm positive I can." He steps in front of you, stopping you in your tracks.
You roll your eyes at him. "Sure you can." You go to walk past him, but he catches your wrist and pulls you back. Your chest hits his chest and he looks down at you. He was taller then you, that was for sure. And bigger. Bigger in-
A bright red dusted your cheeks, hoping that it was just dark enough he wouldn't be able to see. "W-what are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" He leaned in closer and you covered your mouth with your hand.
"I wasn't going to kiss you. Why are you thinking that hm?" He continued to tease you. You slapped his arm lightly. "Prick, I didn't think that you just leaned down so I tho- no I mean I-"
You were cut off by cold lips meeting your warm ones. Your eyes flutter shut. You pull back. "W-wait." You looked into his rainbow colored iris and noticed he was looking at your lips. Your mouth stayed slightly agape. He licked his lips, before they parted slightly as he went to say something. Something you didn't even manage to understand. You catch a slight glance at his fangs. Why did you feel so turned on.." You gulped.
You looked to the side and his hand swooped up, pulling you by your jaw to look back at him. "Don't look away." Rainbow eyes flickering between your e/c ones and soft plump lips. "May I?"
You nod ever so slightly, why the hell not? Were you dreaming?
He smashed his lips into your own, as if he yearned for it. His arms snaked around your waist. Your own pressed against his chest, as you had dropped your helmet a moment earlier. He tugged you closer, trying to feel you as much as possible.
He bit at your lip, causing you to yelp into his mouth. Oh how he loved that sound. He bit down again, harder this time, drawing slight blood. The sounds of lips smacking together, breathy moans, oh it was enough for him. He pulled away, kissing down your jaw to your neck. You shivered in delight.
His lips, soft and wet. Pressing damp kisses to the nape of your neck. His tongue gliding back up a centimeter before biting down softly, and sucking. He was marking you. He wanted you. Your hands moved on their own, going up and wrapping around his neck. Your fingers tangling in his hair.
You let out a soft sound, music to his ears. His grip tightened.
Suddenly a honk of a car drawled the two of you away. You blinked before looking around. You had pulled away from the man and he moved back.
"That was rather fun wasn't it dear?" You felt nothing, well. You did. You felt a lot. In your head, chest, between your legs-
You gulped and looked back up at him. "I can't say I hated it." You blinked and he laughed, his hand finding it's way into yours.
"I say we do this again hm? I'll find you once more." He would. in fact, it would be rather soon. Because he wants to keep you, for himself.
"What's your name?" You asked.
"Douma." You looked around before going to look back at him, he was gone. "What the-"
You felt a little lost now, you sat down on the curb, lost in thought.
Maki found you on the side of the road, shaking you lightly. "Y/n? Oh my god I've been looking for you all fucking night. I was just walking home man!" You looked up at her, your eyes in a gaze. A dreamy haze took over you. You were in heaven just a couple minutes ago. You brought a hand up to your lips. A small wince left your throat. Oh you really had to find him again.
"Woah.. girl are you good." You smiled at her.
"More then good."

AND i don't feel bad for mirin at all ☝🏻 yeah i would be devastated too if i found out my ex who promised to wait for me got married to BUT. at the end of the day he's still a married man and told her repeatedly to stay away from him
also mirin dated other people when she was overseas while sae waited for her for years??? when she came back she claimed she still loved him but slept with his friend??? and tried to blackmail him/his wife??? i'm sorry (not sorry) but this girl deserves nothing atp 😭
—🪼
yeah my personal gripe with her was that she didn’t even ask him why it happened lol (as if i didn’t write her myself) but she was way too concerned with her own well being at that point.
and yep! one guy but it was enough for sae to backtrack and think “what the hell am i doing this for?” still, she was a huge part of his youth so he partly wanted to forgive her for it. until he experienced what an actual person who wants things to work out acts like :’) & for how mirin will turn out …. let’s see yn does next <3 heh

I have more chapters if you’d like to read more please let me know and I’ll post them I have up to chapter 38 done
Chapter 1
Running that's all we did it was all about survival. We were in a damn zombie apocalypse. You had slow zombies, fast zombies, zombies that seemed to have super speed, zombie animals and there were also different blends of zombies depending on how the died and where they were when they died it was crazy and chaotic.
Hi, I'm Nik I was twenty-three when the world went to shit and zombies took over and my little brother Tommy or as he liked to be called 10k, he says that's how many zombies he's going to kill than his name will be Jeff he was seventeen. We were out with our dad when everything happened. We traveled for a while but then our dad got bit and turned and Tommy had to put him down. He changed after that he wasn't the scared nerdy loner kid anymore. Me, on the other hand, had always been hardheaded, strong, independent. I was overly opinionated, could never keep my mouth shut, I was sarcastic, a smartass got in trouble as a teenager. I learned how to use guns, knives, bows, how to survive out in the wild at a young age the same as Tommy. As soon as I could I left and traveled around. I drank, I smoked, I had lots of sex, got high on the occasion. My dad never approved of anything I did. But after being gone for five years I came home for Tommy. The world ended and zombies took over shortly after.
After Tommy and I were alone for a year and survived black summer we ran into a group of people at a school, helping them out with the Zs from afar.  When they were leaving they stopped and an older man with white medium long hair and a ling white beard asked us to join them so we did. There was Warren who was in the National Gaurd, Garnett was also in the forces, Doc the man who asked us to join them, Addy and Mack who were a couple, Cassandra was a girl they found in a cage, Citizen Z who was at the North pole at northern light and then, then there is Murphy. Murphy had been a bit eight times and survived. Why? Well because he was given an experimental Vaccine. He had special antibodies in his blood and needed to be taken to California to the CDC. That was our job, keep him safe and get him across the now wasteland of a country filled with zombies.....alive.
But let me tell you what, it was not easy getting there it took three years just to get to California. Why? You may ask. Well, Murphy was not by any means an easy person to get along with. He was a sarcastic ass, selfish, only cared about himself, thought he deserved to be treated like a king. He kept running off and people kept trying to kidnap him for themselves or someone who was offering them something big. He got on every last nerve of mine and if it wasn't for the fact that he could be the answer to a vaccine to end all this end of the world shit I probably would have killed him. But let me backtrack and take you through our little journey. Starting at the beginning of when we met the group. And how we ended up becoming Operation Bite Mark for Citizen Z.

It's been a year since the world got overrun by zombies. I and my little brother Tom.... sorry 10k were walking up on the hill by the high school when we noticed a black truck pull in. Seven people filed out of the truck and looked to be making up a plan on what to do. While three of them went one way the others stayed near the truck.  They were fighting off the zombies when I noticed an older man with white hair and a white beard struggling with a zombie. "10k," I said and nodded towards the man. He understood and brought his sniper rifle up and took the shot. He, of course, got his mark perfectly as always. He was always a better shot than I was.
My weapon if the choice was a custom bat I had made way before the apocalypse happened. It was stainless steel with spikes long enough to reach the brain all up and down it. It was red with a black handle. I was always really into zombie movies and figured I'd have a costume bat made just for the hell of it. Never thought I'd actually put it to use in a real zombie apocalypse. I also had a machete, bowie knife, and my 9mm semi-automatic pistol with extra magazines all in my belt. 10k had weapons hid everywhere. The man had looked up and spotted us and then turned to fight off more zombies. 10k helped them out taking down any that got to close.
After all the zombies close by were mercied me and 10k started walking. After fifteen minutes down the road, a familiar black truck pulled up beside us. The older man with white hair popped his head out of the back window "Hey, hey there. You're that sharpshooter that saved my ass, aren't you?" The man said. 10k just looked at him. "He is, yes," I told the guy. "Oh man. I want to thank you," he said. "It's no problem," I told him. "Do you need a ride?" He asked. I looked over at 10k and he shrugged his shoulders and nodded. "Yeah, thanks that would be great," I said. 10k got in the back and the man got out and I got in the back with him and another guy.
"I'm Doc," the man said. "Nik," I told him. "This here is Warren and Garnett, in the back is Addy, Mack, and Cassandra and this here is Murphy," Doc said. "It's nice to meet you Nik. Thanks for saving Doc," Warren said. "Oh, that was actually my brother. He's an amazing sniper always hits his mark," I said. "So where are you guys headed?" Warren asked. "Um.. nowhere really. We just keep moving," I told her. "Well, you can come with us. We're going to California," Doc said. "California? Why there?" I asked. "Murphy here is our cure for the zombie apocalypse," Doc told me.
I looked at Murphy "That So? And how so?" I asked. "He was bit eight times and survived," Doc said. My eyes widened and I looked at Murphy, my mouth hung open. "Don't look so surprised princess," Murphy said. "One doesn't call me princess and two it's hard to believe someone could be a bit eight times and survive," I said. "Well you're looking at the one and only princess," he said. "Call me princess again and I'll kick your ass zombie boy," I said. Just as he was going to say something we started speeding up and ran over zombie after zombie.
Eventually, we pulled over because we were running out of gas. "Out of gas," Garnett said. We got out and stood on the side of the road. "Hey Warren we got a problem," Doc said. There was a zombie stuck up under the wheel and axle.  "That explains the pull to the left," Doc said. "What you waiting for? Kill it! Kill it!" Murphy yelled and walked away. I walked over to Murphy and stood beside him. I had to admit he was sexy probably twice my age but I always liked older men. I stood there twirling my bat in my hand. "What do you want?" He said. "Nothing just thought you looked lonely zombie boy," I said. "I'm not a zombie," he growled. "That you know of," I replied. That's when we heard motorcycles coming up the road and I noticed Cassandra turn away to hide. As they went by they looked us down "that's right to keep rolling and we all live to see another day," Warren said.
We stood on the road looking down at New York City. "Even after all this, it's still beautiful," Warren said. We turned around and headed down the road to an old junkyard and started going through the cars for gas but there was not a drop in any of them. "All these cars and there's not a drop of gas," I said.
Addy pulled put a cam and started recording. "What ? you on vacation?" Murphy said. "Someone has to record," she said. "You know we're probably the last generation of humans on Earth," he said. "To us, it's the apocalypse, to her it's the memories,"  Mack said. Murphy scuffed and rolled his eyes. "Would it hurt the antibodies if I kicked him the nuts?" Addy asked. "We could find out," I said.
Doc laughed and looked at 10k. "So kids what's your name?" He said. "Ten thousand," he said. "That's bot a name. That's a number," Doc said. "It's my name. I made it up myself," he said. "Well supposed you have to. Does it mean anything," Doc asked. "That's how many zombies I'm going to Kill. Already on 1,055," 10k said. " damn so what happens when you get to 1o,ooo?" Doc said. "Change my name," "to what? Twenty thousand?" Doc asked and I snorted. 10k looked at me with a bitch face and looked at doc "Jeff. I like the name Jeff," he said. "I like your real name but okay little brother," I said and walked off.
I found Murphy and walked up to him "I don't think you should be alone," I said. "I'm not alone Warren is over there," he said. "Do you even know how to take a Z down?" I said. "Don't need to. I have all of you," he said. "You sure about that?" I said walking closer to him so we were only a few inches away from each other. He is at least a foot taller than I am and I'm only 5'4. I looked up at him and smirked. "Would be threatening my short stack," he said. "Oh you really don't want to make it to California do you," I said look into his blue eyes. He looked back into my own blue eyes and stepped closer. "Now you wouldn't want to kill the only hope for the human race would you princess?" He said. I grabbed his shirt and pulled him down to my level. "I told you not to call me princess," I said.
We stared each other down when 10k stepped up beside us "You're not going to kiss him, are you? You don't know where it's been," he said. Doc, Mack, and Addy started laughing. Murphy grabbed my wrist and I let go of his shirt. We started walking back to Warren and I noticed a new guy one of the guys that passed us on the road. "He knows where we can get gas," Warren said. With that, we walked back to the truck and I was stuck in the middle of Doc and Murphy. I purposely say a little closer to Murphy just to annoy him and because it's how I was with guys I found sexually attractive. "Do you mind," he said in my ear. "Do I mind what?" I said. "Getting out of my personal space," he said. "I'm sorry Murphy but there's not much room," I said and he groaned.
We had arrived at a refinery that was crawling with Zs.  "This place is full of Zs," I said. We got out and Warren went over the plan and gave everyone jobs. "Nik, Doc stay here with Murphy," she said. 'Yeah sure," I said. "Hey, I'm going to go up high and keep an eye out," 10k said to me. "Alright, be careful do you understand me?" I said. "Yes, Nik I'll be fine," he said and walked off. Doc, Murphy and I all got back into the truck and doc and Murphy played go fish. "Eights?" Doc said. "Go fish," Murphy told him. "You cheated! At fucking go fish!" I said. "That's life princess," he said. Before I could say anything a few Zs started banging on the Windows. Doc got out to try and drawl them away and Murphy started freaking out. I climbed into the passenger seat.  "Murphy! Calm down!" I said. He wouldn't stop and got in the driver's side and took off. "Murphy! Look out!" I yelled but it was too late and he ran into a pole.
"Fuck!" I yelled after hitting my head on the dash. I put my hand up to my forehead only to bring it down to see blood. "Great! Now I'm bleeding because you freaked out over a couple of Zs!" I yelled at him. Doc came running over and opened the passenger side door. "Nik! Are you okay?" He said. "Oh I'm fine don't worry," Murphy said. "Shut the fuck up before you become zombie food again!" I growled. Warren and Garnett ran over and Doc helped me out if the car. "We have to get out of here that tanker is going to blow," Garnett said. We all piled into the black truck "wait where's 10k?!" I asked. Before anyone could answer he jumped in the back and we took off.

It started with one fight.
Well, no, it wasn't all that simple. You probably have to backtrack a little.
It started even before that real fight.
You were always attracted to conflict, always found comfort in venting your anger physically. Maybe it came from your home situation, with a father that always came home drunk and unpredictable. No, that couldn't be it. That was the reason behind your natural talent for fighting, but it couldn't explain your twisted attraction to it.
Oh well, what was the point in trying to reason out your passions anyway?
Either way, you ended up constantly mingling with the wrong crowd ever since the first year of middle school. It was still minor things back then, little cat fight style scuffles and some casual stealing from the local convenience store, but stealing a pack of gum became stealing expensive phones and minor scuffles became life threatening brawls. Not one person there would ever have your best interests at heart, would ever have your back in any situation, but you still went back dutifully every day.
The first punch you threw was supposed to hurt. You’ve seen the bruised knuckles, the nursing of bloodied hands after, but you didn’t get that. At the end, when your knuckles dripped blood after decking a leering boy in the face, you could only feel triumph.
Maybe you couldn't stop cause you wouldn't know what to do with yourself if you didn't have this. To be honest, you wouldn't know even if that was the reason. All you knew was the sick sense of euphoria every time you got in a devastating blow, every time people who had looked down on you for being a dainty little girl would look at her with a newfound sense of fear and awe.
But of course, fights never ended so pleasingly every time. Just as often, you’d be the one slinking away like a wounded animal, hissing and snarling at the people who attacked you. And when you run out of the slums, your body bruised and littered with cuts, you’d retreat to your safe haven. The only place you could ever be at peace with yourself.
You walked through narrow streets to avoid being noticed. It would be a bigger issue than you could handle if someone from your school saw you the way you were then. The darkness of the late hour worked to your advantage as well, and the few that did pass you paid your limping form no attention.
After an eternity, you stood in front of a familiar house, and inwardly signed in relief. The building wasn't particularly pretty, but the sight of it made you feel already a little more at ease. Peering to the left, you saw the window on the second floor to the far left was still illuminated by lights. Like you had done dozens of times before, you made your way to the side of the building, and began to scale your way up to the window.
Despite the ache all over your body, your limbs moved on auto-pilot, and before you knew it, your feet landed safely on the window frame. Balancing yourself, you let go of one hand and softly knocked on the glass.
There was no response for a long moment, and you were beginning to worry that the only place you felt safe had shut you out when you heard the bolt unlock, and the window swung open to reveal a disgruntled Huang Renjun.
The moment his eyes fell on you, with a bruise beginning to appear on your face along with the multitude of wounds all over your body, the look on his face softened slightly, but still with an air of stiffness and even a bit of disappointment.
No words were exchanged, only a prolonged moment of eye contact before he took one of your hands and tugged you into his room. His hold on your hand was soft but firm, and you couldn't help but clutch onto him like a lifeline.
Renjun led you over to his bed, and you sat down obediently, avoiding his gaze. As you settled down, he swiftly left his room, and you heard his soft footsteps walk down the stairs.
“Renjun?” his mother called, “Why do you need the first-aid kit?”
“I hit my knee on the table corner in my room,” he lied smoothly, and excused himself from his mother’s presence.
He flew back into the room with still an unreadable expression on his face. You faced scary people on a daily basis, but Renjun was still able to terrify you to silence, not because he was scary, but because you actually cared about his impression of you.
As he came towards the bed, he reached out to you and brushed your leather jacket with his hands, a way of prompting you to remove it. You nodded in affirmation, and shrugged it off, Renjun helping you so you didn't aggravate your body any further. He sat down next to you, and began pulling tools out of the first aid kit.
Even as he began working on the big scratches on your legs, Renjun was still completely silent. He had not said a word to you since you showed up, and that terrified you. Renjun always had something to say, whether it be a sarcastic quip, fruitless nagging, or just small talk. The fact that he was so quiet caused your heart to race with fear, a little voice telling you that it's finally happened, he's given up on you too.
You were quiet for a minute more before you couldn't contain yourself any longer. Looking at him cautiously, your voice shook as you finally made up your mind to speak.
“I'm–”
“Don't say you're sorry,” Renjun interrupted you, and you flinched at the harshness in his voice, “If you were sorry, you wouldn't have went back.”
“I'm sorry,” Despite his warning, you couldn't help but blurt it out, because that was all you were in that moment. Sorry.
You continued, stumbling over your words in anxiety, “I–i didn't want to, but I insulted one of the new guys at the bar and I couldn't get out of it and–”
“You promised,” Renjun said tightly, now wrapping a bandage around a rather deep cut on your arm, “Not just to stop fighting, but to never go back there again.”
Your heart felt ready to burst out of your chest because Renjun was angry, Renjun was going to leave, “I couldn't stop myself, I didn't know why I went. I know I was wrong, I'm sorry–” you felt a sob get caught in your throat.
“Woah, woah,” Renjun’s tone of voice immediately grew concerned at the sound of your tears, “Please don't cry, I'll stop pushing, okay? Please don't cry.”
The fact that Renjun still found it in himself to be kind to you after everything you put him through only made you want to cry even more. In this cruel world, he had become the only person you cared about, the little boy who treated you like a real human being when no one else did.
You let out a shaky breath, and despite your efforts, a stray tear dripped down your face. Renjun stopped his work to brush it away quickly. His thumb lingered on your face for a moment too long, and he retracted his arm as if electrocuted.
You stared at Renjun’s lowered head, his eyebrows creased in concentration as he dabbed your cuts with disinfectant. You didn’t want to, couldn’t possibly read into his actions too much, since how could you be so arrogant to think that someone as wonderful as Renjun would ever care, much less feel anything towards you.
Still, curiosity got the better over you, and you couldn’t help but ask softly, “Why do you do this?”
Renjun stiffened almost unnoticeably, his hand fell still only for a moment. If you weren’t so hyperaware of his every little detail, you would’ve missed his little tells, “Because I care about you, Y/N.”
“You shouldn’t,” you retorted almost angrily, “I’m nothing but a bad influence, just like your mother said-”
“I don’t care what my mother thinks about you!” Renjun said harshly, squeezing your hand, “I know who you are, and I don’t need anyone else to tell me what they think you do.”
Tears pooled in your eyes as you gripped his hand. As the home life deteriorated and along with it your sanity, Renjun was the only one that stuck by you. Even when his mother, who had adored you so much when you were “normal,” scorned your existence and forbade him from seeing you, he stayed. Renjun would go above and beyond to be with you, and you had no idea why.
“I’ll ruin you, Renjunnie,” you whispered.
“I don’t care,” he replied firmly, like the stubborn boy he was.
“Why?”
Renjun finally looked at you, his expression intense, but his eyes looked tired. Sighing, he raised his hand up and, to your surprise, caressed your cheek. His eyes glazed over as he stared at your face, his eyes filled with emotion. You sat, frozen, waiting for Renjun to make his move.
“Because I love you.”
You let out a choked sigh, because you had never expected anyone to say those words to you, much less Renjun. Apparently, your shock seemed to hurt Renjun, and his eyes looked pained as he pulled you closer to him.
“I guess I don’t say that enough to you,” he said, more to himself.
“It’s okay,” you spoke quickly, frantically trying to get Renjun out of his self chastising, “You don’t have to lie to make me feel better-”
“How could you say that?” Renjun finally wrapped his arms around you, for the first time in years. He sounded hurt, “Do you think I’m lying now?”
You didn’t reply, because as much as you wanted to believe him, you couldn’t.
“I’ve never lied to you,” Renjun pressed his lips against your hair, “And I’m not lying now.”
You leaned into his arms, your broken heart constricting but a glimmer of hope began to appear, “Don’t do this,” you warned him one last time, “Don’t give me the false hope of a new life with you.”
“Not lying,” he promised, tilting your head to look into his eyes, “You’re stuck with me for eternity.”
