#but Wukong and Xiaotian are the worst off

Bruh I was gonna write this as a ficlet but I ain't never gonna finish. Here, feel free to add or contribute if you please or enjoy:
This wasn't how Wukong's day was supposed to go. He was supposed to just do a quick flight over to the city, check his former brother's seal, and return home to another binge marathon of Monkey Cop and pigging out on peach chips. None of this successor stuff, none of this fighting to save the world bullcrap. Just a normal, regular old day of being completely alone aside from his younger and more feral subjects, the cubs often curling up on him or practicing their grooming. Just like he's done for the past 500 plus years.
His sister-in-law and her son finding a way to actually succeed in their quest to release his brother wasn't in that plan... neither was the unexpected reunion between Wukong and the little cub he'd given up all those years ago. Qi Xiaotian, or MK as he was known as, had grown up quite a lot in the years since he'd broken his own heart by placing a human disguise on him, sealing his powers away, and left him to the decendants of his late master and brother to find. Don't get him wrong, he hadn't done so out of neglect or because he didn't want to keep the cub. Hell, he hadn't even completely abandoned him either, consistently checking up on the little guy and keeping him safe from a distance as he grew. But he wasn't stupid either, the kid would have been miserable growing up with Wukong, would have never had a normal life if he was left with the old king, and that was the last thing Wukong had wanted for him.
Even so, seeing him suddenly appear out of nowhere had near made Wukong's stone heart jump out of his chest. Why his cub (Wukong firmly shook his head at the reminder that MK was NOT his cub anymore and he doesn't have the right to call him that) was even in that dirty alleyway climbing the pipes he has no idea, but at the moment Wukong had bigger things to worry about. Like his brother rising from the ground as his staff was lifted by some weird gauntlet his nephew had built and the fact he was in no way capable of fighting his brother again.
The kid promptly running away and then losing the staff in some hairbrained scheme to get it back to him after he picked it up hadn't been the best. Nor was the kid nearly being blown into a lava field by his sister-in-law and being forced to save him and carry him the rest of the way to Huāguǒshān hadn't been the best outcome either, but he'd take it.
He just wished it hadn't come at the cost of the kid discovering Wukong's secret. He had kinda figured it'd get out when the kid decided to try to return the staff to him, but he kinda wish it hadn't happened the way it had. The kid had seen him as he transformed back into his true form from his eagle form, which normally wouldn't be an issue, except Wukong had gotten up that morning and decided not to even bother brushing his fur or changing out of his pajamas.
Like he said, he had been planning a quick peekey weekey at the staff to make sure nothing was amiss and then binging his shows, nothing exciting or cleanup worthy. And considering his pajama shirt proudly proclaimed 'Baby on Board' there was simply no hiding the truth. Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, was pregnant.
Had been since before the Journey that truly made him a legend had even properly started, not that anyone beyond Guanyin or the Pilgrims had known.
MK had naturally been extremely excited to meet his idol and also quite confused about his condition. Wukong had just laughed off the matter for the most part. It certainly wasn't the worst reaction he'd dealt with in regards to his condition, Zu Baije had taken the cake for that one. And of course, Wukong had to be a kind host and lead the kid back to his hut, partially so he could change out of pajamas into something more fitting for company, while the kid rambled on about the Demon Bull King. It was during the walk back that Wukong had, essentially, admitted to spying on the kid.
And admitted to his own fault in getting the kid involved, confessing that he had sort of panicked in the moment. It was only fair that he fessed up, as he truly hadn't intended to put him in any true danger. He needed a distraction. Something to get that staff away from the IronBull Family, and the kid was the only available option. Especially when considering the more than likely negative feelings the IronBuul Fanily harbor towards Wukong and his precious egg.
He'd even complimented MK's handling of the staff, which was quite impressive considering exactly what Ruyi Jingu Bang actually was and the fact the kid had no prior experience with staffs or any type of weaponry as far as Wukong knew. The fact he could even lift the ancient artifact at all was impressive. He even joked that he might as well make him Wukong's successor for real after seeing that, after getting the staff back. That was a mistake. The kid took the joke seriously and decided that, since Wukong clearly couldn't fight in his condition, he would fight of Demon Bull King in his stead.
Wukong was almost impressed, if he hadn't been busy panicking over how BAD of an idea that was. MK is mortal!! He could get hurt! But apparently stubbornness is a common trait among Stone Monkeys and their ilk, because once MK had the idea in his head he refused to let it go. At this point, the best Wukong could do is damage control.
And by that he meant 'reign the kid in enough to get an actually viable plan up off the ground.' A plan that, upon reaching the city where the IronBull Family were beginning their conquest, and being surprised to see MK's friends rise to the occasion to try to fight the demon family themselves in the process, immediately went belly up in the water. The kid was supposed to stay back, let Wukong handle distracting the king while he got his friends to safety and snuck close enough to try to summon the staff from where it was being used as a battery in the generator DBK was wearing to power himself up. But then Wukong collapsed as soon as they landed, the multiple trips and carrying a teenager across an active volcano field being too much in addition to the baby that consistently drained his powers and the dao around it. Because of course Stone Monkey pregnancies can't be easy, right!?
Seeing the situation, MK promptly took Wukong's role and challenged the Bull King, leaving Wukong groundbound and trying to sneak close enough to get to the staff.
Then MK fucked up.
Wukong has no idea what the cub was thinking, but he decided to go for the generator himself, causing a massive explosion and a ton of property damage. And for Wukong, that resulted in a building falling on top of him. Luckily, Wukong is the Monkey King and was able to cast a last second protection spell upon his stomache to prevent his baby from getting hurt and he himself is immortal and mostly invincible, unfortunately he doesn't have the strength left between everything to get out from under the building. And he's fairly certain he has a couple of broken ribs and his leg is most definitely not supposed to bend that way. Meaning he was stuck, injured, and vulnerable out in the open with only him hastily throwing his dirty and ripped scarf over his head in a desperate attempt to stop anyone with unfriendly intentions, namely his former brother, from recognizing him.
In short, he was screwed.
See, an unfortunate truth about Stone Monkeys is that the reason they are
so rare in spite of their unique methods of procreation and power... is because it comes at a heavy cost. The stone egg that grows within a celestial primate feeds upon their very life force and the dao around them. Meaning that between the egg, multiple trips between his island and the city, and the work he put in to just keep the shrapnel from the battle form hitting any of the mortals who just had to stop and stare, Wukong had very little of his strength and power left to do something as simple as moving a couple thousand tons of rubble, debris, and shrapnel that was now burying his lower body. Some of which was digging painfully into his leg. Sometimes he wishes he had never let himself be redeemed, things would have been simpler if he didn't care about dorky mortals who foolishly hang out where they shouldn't be or pick fights with ancient demon kings.
"Hey, hey!" Wukong's ears perked as a voice shouted over the explosions of DBK's cannon. Blinking, he turned his head towards the sound, trying to blink past the dust and debris clouds that looked just a little too much like smoke in the waning light of the sunset. When did it get so late!? A large, stocky figure that would be considered short by most demons' descriptions but looked a giant in Wukong's own unglamorous opinion began to fade out of the dust around him, and bringing another sense of panic to him.
Zu Baije's decendant.
The monkey demon absolutely could not risk him seeing him. Being recognized in this vulnerable state would be bad news for him and his baby, that aside, he himself is msot certainly not mentally or emotionally ready to handle seeing a potential reincarnation of his brother! It doesn't take a genius, when one has Eyes of Truth, to realize the soul now running towards him through the debris shared the sound of his ancestor. Wukong squeezed his eyes shut, trying to think of a way out fo this as the piglet fell to his knees next to him.
"Are you alright!? Jeez... what am I sayin!? Of course you ain't, a building fell on you! Hey, don't worry, well getcha outta here."
The pig was rambling as he took in the filthy orange fur and unnatural angle of the monkey's leg. Wukong forced a smile upon his lips, all teeth and praying it be reassuring. Time to try to convince him to leave.
"D-don't worry about me. I'm fine." Wukong coughed out, cursing the way his voice stumbled over the words. The pig did not seem convinced, or I pressed for that matter, with. Wukong's reassurance. Instead he collapsed next to the monkey demon and began digging at the debris.
"H-hey, what..." Wukong tried to weakly shove him off, "I said not to worry! A bunch of rocks isn't gonna hurt me, you should just get out of here yourself! The fight is heading in this direction!"
AHHHHH!H!HH!H!H!H!
@a-tea-goblin you seeing this!?
This is gotta be one of the best gifts i've recieved in a long while!
I love the descriptions of Wukong + MK instantly deciding "I protec you now." when he realises that the Monkey King isn't doing so great cus of the baby.
And Dadsy to the rescue!! You know Wukong is caught off guard - I love how you have him protesting getting helped the entire time. He's not used to people caring about him again.
Even if you never "finish" this as a ficlet, I immensely enjoyed what you wrote!

*taps fingers together* More dual Chimera pregnancy?
Idk why everyone likes the pregnancy stuff, but hey, who am i to judge? i like to write Chimera so i'll write Chimera
--
He’d said it a million times before and he’d say it a million more times until his loves actually gave birth.
Cuddling was absolutely heaven like this.
Demon instinct made calm a rare commodity when one’s partner is expecting, but the fact that he had TWO partners whom were BOTH expecting meant that he was spending a lot of time being very very anxious indeed. Always fluttering about, heart hammering in his chest about keeping the both of them safe, making sure everything was as good and in order as he possibly could. They always had their standard craving snacks, but the truck was always filled up on gas to get to town and back as quick as he possibly could in order to fulfil any new cravings that showed up. That the little house they were all living in in the forest was well defended so a million demons weren’t going to invade at any second to try and kill one or all of them. Organizing visitations with the parents, so Sun Wukong or Pigsy weren’t alone with his parents, and Mr and Mrs Long didn’t show up at the same time as Tang and Pigsy, and if Pigsy and Wukong were both here no one else was allowed to be there because they would feed off of eachother in the worst possible way, and if Tang was there he’d make everything worse.
You know… average things to keep in his head while his partners were pregnant.
But by that logic, that also meant that the little moments of peace inbetween the cravings, and aches and pains, and enormous mood swings, and the through the roof increased libidos, were all the more precious.
His two great loves would prefer to cuddle with himself in the middle, as his natural heat was soothing to most aches either of them would develop, and Xiaotian was insistent that the little one in him would always kick when he felt Papa’s warmth nearby. Xiaojiao would then tuck her head into Red’s neck and insist that her little one liked Papa’s voice the best. A playful, never serious one upsmanship on which of their babies responded in a cuter way to their Papa. A competition Red Son would never and could never get involved in because why would he ever get involved in such a thing when him getting involved meant it would be over?
Xiaotian was on one side, Red had just enough fire magic in his hand to warm his swollen belly up considerably, to keep their daughter nice and toasty just how she liked it. And Xiaojiao was curled up so his ear was instead pressed to her own round abdomen, so he could murmur to their son and feel him respond to his voice.
They only had a couple more months until their little bundles of joy were set to be due.
So Red Son enjoyed his little slice of heaven while he still could.

I have difficulty how to phrase my thoughts but I’m thinking of a post season 3 story, where Sun Wukong is nearly pushed to the point of losing control of himself. That would be part of a larger overarching arc where he faces some of the wounds of his past.
The reasons he doesn’t lose control is because a) of his fear what will happen if he loses control, b) his will, and c) now having a bigger support network that helps ground him.
b) and c) are especially important.
Season 3 had Sun Wukong possessed / puppeteered and lost control of himself already. If he’s growing and healing as I’m headcanoning it, it’d be an important moment to show that he’s made more connections. That he has more people he can and will rely on to help him, hold him back.
Just like Qi Xiaotian’s belief in Sun Wukong gave him the strength to break out of White Bone Demon’s possession, having that support gives him strength.
It still must be him to face that battle. Others can give him strength, others can believe in him. But what if they can’t reach him directly that point? What if he was cut off?
And this time, he’s facing only himself. One of the worst parts of himself, full of pain, rage, bloodlust.
He must be willing to accept that support, to overcome his fear, to let it fuel him. He must use his will to hold back.
He doesn’t have to believe in himself yet. He needs to believe that he also can become better on his own efforts.
Sun Wukong doesn’t win. Not that it’s possible. That kind of wound will take time to heal.
But he pulls back after he had slipped.
He holds out until he can ask for help.
He holds out until said help deescalates the situation.
He has stopped himself from hurting others when he was on the brink, when he was on his own. And he survived without making things worse for himself.
It‘s one of the most important victories when he once thought he wouldn’t be able to stop on his own once he went this far, even with help.
-----
The external conflict stops because the group who is pushing him - a mix of humans and yaoguai - rethinks their stance that Sun Wukong has become weak or wanting to break him, when they see a glimpse of what is hiding in the depths of his mind. That which he holds back with his restraint.
They make a very hasty retreat.

The Ashes of the Third Pyre
Sequel to Ignition of the Third Pyre
Nezha stirred, opening his eyes slowly. He heard two intermingling voices, which largely drowned out two sighs of relief.
"NEZHA!"
Sun Wukong and Xiaotian nearly yelled at the same time.
Nezha would have jolted up to a sitting position and grabbed his spear, but their body felt like it was still burning from the Samadhi Fire that had ignited out of them. They only groaned, then hissed, gritting his teeth.
"Nezha-"
Wukong was cut off.
"Everything fucking hurts..."
The Lotus Prince groaned, then writhed in pain, nearly falling off of the cushions he'd been placed on.
"...should we... help you take your armor off?"
"Please..."
Sun Wukong carefully started to pick apart Nezha's armor, revealing the Deity's heavily burned torso. The burns were the worst on his chest, right on their sternum, as if the fire had come from within.
"Shit, man... that looks painful..."
"...no fucking shit, Wukong..."
Nezha groaned. They perked up as someone pushed them up to a sitting position, then moved an array of pillows under his back.
"Phew. You're a lot lighter than I expected."
"Then what was with the sigh of exhaustion?"
Nezha inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"...you've been out for days. We nearly lost our minds. We know you're a Deity, but..."
The Lotus Prince winced.
"...pardon me. I should have... kept my temper... back there..."
"...oh, relax, I would have done the same."
Red Son, after he had gathered himself, spoke to Nezha with a fairly calm demeanor, although an abrasive tone.
"...but your temper is shorter than mine. You can afford to have a short temper. I cannot."
Red Son sighed.
"You, of all individuals, should know that no one is perfect, and to hold you to such a high standard as you are by... he who I will not name is egregious, cruel, and deplorable."
Nezha winced once more at the memories brought back by Red Son's tone, unmentioned mention, and verbiage. His eyes opened wide, and his body went slack, nearly completely limp.
Fire.
Bright, crimson fire.
No.
Please don't-
IT HURTS.
"...Nezha...? Li Nezha!"
Xiaotian called out to the Deity in an attempt to rouse him from whatever had them in their clutches.
"Oooh, boy-"
Mei put her hands in her hair.
"This isn't good-"
Xiaotian took a deep breath, inhaling, then exhaling audibly.
"I have an idea, but you all will call me insane for this even if it works."
Xiaotian explained, holding his hands out for emphasis.
"...okay...?"
Mei looked as confused as she felt.
Xiaotian sat down next to Nezha, then reached out carefully to squeeze the Lotus Deity's hand.
"...hey, wake up, big brother, it's just a nightmare."
Nezha snapped out of it, that fearful expression disappearing. They pulled their hand away from Xiaotian's to rub their temple, then looked over at the younger individual.
"...wait... what did you call me?"
"...uhh... big brother. I uh... hope that's okay."
Nezha turned away and bared his fangs at the floor.
"...you're mortal-"
"No, I'm not. I'm going to be a fully fledged Monkey Demon one of these days. Red Son is theoretically immortal, and so is Pigsy, Sandy, and Mei because of her heritage. Tang might get his hands on a peach. He has a ways to go yet. You won't lose us so easily."
Nezha kept his head turned away from Xiaotian.
"No. Don't give me hope. It's been dashed enough."
Xiaotian set his hand on the Deity's shoulder.
"...go ahead and cry all you need to. We can't judge, we do it ourselves."
Xiaotian's tone brought the Lotus Prince a degree of comfort.
"Yeah. Kid has a point. We're not mad at you, Nezha. We're concerned."
Sun Wukong chimed in.
The way Nezha's shoulders fell said that they were getting through to them. The hostility in his bared teeth faded. His silence was almost eerie.
Xiaotian shocked the Deity by reeling him into a hug. The prince's tear filled eyes widened as he paused for a moment.
This was real.
The Deity relaxed again, slowly but surely, though it had taken several minutes. His frantic heart began to slow back to a rest. Xiaotian smiled brightly when he felt the Deity's adrenaline rush fade.
"See? We're okay. You'll be okay. Let us take care of you like you took care of us."
"...alright."
The Lotus Prince sighed with relief, allowing their guard to drop fully. However, Xiaotian was surprised when the Deity didn't let go, on the contrary, he pulled him closer and set his head over his shoulder.
"...s...sorry..."
His voice cracked from the weight of the grief and shame that began to settle on his conscience. His arms fell limp, but Xiaotian kept his grip on the torn guardian.
"...let it out. You've seen and done too much."
With that, the Guardian Deity's composure shattered entirely. His eyes widened, and he gritted his teeth to stay quiet. He adjusted, pulling away slightly, but resting his head on the other's shoulder.
Tang smiled weakly and moved to help.
"Hey, Nezha..."
Words escaped the Deity, and they simply turned to Tang, tears still streaming down from their eyes.
"...if she only wanted you, and would have left after she had you, we still would have fought as hard as we could."
Those words were a twist of the knife, words an old friend would have said. Nezha restrained a sharp cry of unrivaled grief, surprising Tang.
"...did I say something wrong...?"
"YOU'RE JUST LIKE TRIPITAKA!"
Nezha cried out, cutting his own yell off as soon as he could to prevent a louder one.
"...you're just like Tripitaka... why did we have to lose him...?"
Nezha continued to lament, unable to restrain his emotions anymore.
"...I'm sorry. For everything you've been through. The only thing I can promise is that we'll be here for you as long as we can, whenever we can."
"...thank you..."
Nezha spoke with a weak, unsteady tone, his voice threatening to break as he forced the words out of his throat between sobs.
Tang ran his hand through Nezha's hair ever so gently in an attempt to help comfort them.
Red Son sighed and moved closer, his facade of apathy finally lowered by the soft hiccups and audible sobs of the Guardian Deity.
"...I don't mean to be callous, but you're hurt and we need you to lie down so we can deal with your burns. "
"Ah- right..."
Nezha pulled away and laid down while Red Son carefully treated the Deity's burns. The Fire Demon was concerned when he noticed that Nezha hardly flinched at the pain. He held perfectly still.
"Sit up."
Nezha followed Red Son's order, then winced as the Demon began to wrap their torso with bandages, covering the burns so they wouldn't get infected. The wrappings were slightly loose, and after a few moments, the Celestial sighed with relief as the pain faded into relative obscurity.
"...thanks..."
"Mhm. Whenever you need my help, call for me, Nezha."
The Celestial wiped the last of the tears out of his eyes, but they still looked disturbed.
Sun Wukong spoke again.
"...you took care of us. Let us return the favor."
"...alright..."
"...care for some of Sandy's tea?"
"...I literally can't sleep well without it."
"Oh."
"...I have a lot of nightmares, so I usually don't sleep, I meditate."
"Why didn't you tell us sooner?! We'd have done everything we could so you could get a good night's rest!"
"...I... fear."
"...of what?"
"Judgement."
"...man, that sucks. I'm not letting even the Jade Emperor near you until you're feeling better."
"...alright... thank you. For all your scattered thoughts and questionable behavior... you're still kind when I need it. Thank you."
"Any time, bud. Don't you worry about anything for a while, we've got you."
Sun Wukong ruffled Nezha's hair. The Celestial bit the inside of his cheek and released a flustered huff, but didn't strike the Monkey King.
"Aww, getting fond of me, are you?"
Wukong teased.
Nezha allowed himself to smile.
"You're still a reckless fool."
"I mean, can't argue with you, there, pal."
Nezha laughed softly as Wukong balanced on one foot, on top of a pile of Xiaotian's clothes. The Celestial wiped a tear out of his eyes.
"Thank you... all of you... for being here..."
"Well, you're even more of a mess than we are. You have ALL of our problems. Fire trauma is mine-"
"Parent problems."
"Power I don't fucking know what to do with."
Xiaotian piped up.
"...fear of abandonment slash abandonment issues... heh..."
"...birds of a feather stick together, as the saying goes. Come here."
The traffic light trio moved to hug Nezha, though Red Son was the last to give in.
Nezha smiled and sighed with relief as they held the three close as best he could. His aching heart began to ease as they realized something.
He was happy here.
They intended to stay, no matter what it took.

As the FFT goes on how does Monkey king and the others deal with the morality of the kids? Like do Xiaotian , Xiaojiao , Bai Hei and the other mortals take the immortality / have their names erased from the book of death or do they end up passing away as Ma's wife did?
This also applies to Monkey king and the generals if they ever re-enter the reincarnation cycle at the end of the au .
Tumblr media
(also please do refer to the Fruit Twins version of the Host as little Gao or Clementine/Clem, i don't vibe with the Bai He nick n so referin to Clem as such confuses me at best and pisses me off at worst- just a quick psa!)
but for a serious answer: this hasn't been considered even once yet because death of any of the mortals is So far away that in doesn't really matter in the current time of FT. right now, I'd rather focus on the very reason behind the au's existence in the first place: addressing psychological issues and struggles of the characters with a realistic leaning approach (or just my own approach, i guess)
not even the FT!s3 is completely planned out yet, not to mention i still have characters i want to dive deeper into such as Long Xiaojiao, Sha Dali, the Blood Moons, chef Zhu & Tang shifu, Jin & Yin and the Spider gang currently my attention is mostly kind of on Sun Wukong and the Seaside season which is supposed to address HIS issues to finally give Him some kind of help since he pretty much plays a supporting character in s3 to Six's n sorta Ma's arcs n dodges any other attempts of others at taking him to therapy for himself. Sun Wukong is SUCH an important character- he is supposed to pretty much make up the second half of the au as one of the gods dammed twins, but so far i've been only posting about Six Ear and His process thru redemption- and yet i don't really have... as Much for him as i would like especially when comparing him to Six
but to actually somewhat try n address ur question: Xiaojiao is a lóng so she has a long life before her. Xiaotian is pumped by the Sun Wukong Essence™ which lengthens his life a lot. Little Gao has pretty much inherited the White Bone Spirit's attributes including some kind of immortality n even if/when she dies she will probably be forced to come back as a bone demon (her whole situation is pretty much a curse. her dads ain't safe from mortality tho). Chef Zhu as a yaoguai also has a long life before him, Sha Dali is the ACTUAL Sha Wujing in FT therefore functionally immortal as a funky arhat and Tang is most vulnerable to mortality
BUT because of the society workin as a mix of humans And yaoguai, there's been a lot of changes done to both of those "species". yaoguai mature faster and, surprise surprise, humans age slower. Tang can live for over well 150 years without much of a sweat and the lengthening is constantly being perfected, so who knows how long he will be able to stick around from the aging perspective. and with Six for a husband, he's safe as hell from most dangers since Six is very protective n unlike canon Mac totally equal to Sun Wukong when it comes to power level
Kokoro (Ma's late wife) died because in her time, yaoguai simply weren't accepted by the society so openly yet- the co-existing was incredibly new and yaoguai weren't allowed into medical fields n such (there was a good long discrimination against them but like considerin yaoguai r largely known for being human-eaters n for doin all kinds of terrible stuff to humans that is no wonder. also nobody dare to aliken this to any real life discriminations this is incredibly different. sayin just to make sure -squint-)
as far as the already immortal monkeys go, there ain't no plans for them re-entering the cycle of reincarnation n i don't see any reason for any of them to do that kinda thing. Ba and Beng have been married and stupidly cute together for about 6000 years now n hardly want to stop any time, Six is scared SHITLESS of dying, Sun Wukong is going to get help for his suicidal thoughts and resume his enlightenment journey (since he hasn't reached the level of Buddha in FT) and Ma is the MOST likely to choose to re-enter the cycle of reincarnation but the chances of that are so fucking slim cuz she is too pissy and spiteful to kick the bucket

Character huh? How about Long Xiaojiao?
How I feel about this character
Overall a fun and cheerful young woman up until very recent events! It was nice how she had (has? maybe) such an obvious and exuberant love of life even with her struggles with familial expectations. Also really cool how her parents obviously love and want what's best for her and for her to be happy even if the things she loves aren't for them. Her sword and motorbike skills are really cool as well, to say nothing of her ability to manifest an entire dragon. I feel like a big part of her story has been based around the power of healthy communication, both how it helps people and how not doing so can devastate them. Really sucks how the last episode left her in a state of suffering the worst part of her family's legacy (the embedded flame of Samadhi), Sun Wukong's frustrating but perhaps understandable secrecy, & Macaque's frustrating but perhaps understandable refusal to listen to the Monkey King :(
All the people I ship romantically with this character
I don't particularly ship her with anyone at present.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
OBVIOUSLY QI XIAOTIAN. What they have is genuinely one of the strongest friendships I've seen in media. It's awesome how much they support and risk for each other in addition to just enjoying being in each other's company. Friendship so strong they can walk through flames for each other :.)
My unpopular opinion about this character
Hmmmmm little hesitant to say this buuuut I am slightly worried that she's getting roped into being another element of the Sun Wukong bashing that Monkie Kid might be getting into. Like yeah maybe we'll see what kind of tragedy is driving the Monkey King to behave with such disastrous secrecy but between his constant failures with catastrophic consequences (with Long Xiaojiao being the most recent victim of this trend) and now multiple loved characters yelling at him for this (with Long Xiaojiao standing as the most heart-wrenching example) I am a bit worried that the characterization of "stupid monkey who breaks everything" is slowly but steadily creeping into Monkie Kid's portrayal of the Monkey King. And as it is with Long Xiaojiao there is the open question moving forward if her story is going to be more about what she's going to choose to do or if it's going to be about things that are done to her. And either way, with the fallout from the flame of Samadhi being awakened and Long Xiaojiao suffering from it it seems like Qi Xiaotian is going to be forced to choose between Sun Wukong and Long Xiaojiao, as I can't imagine her forgiving the Monkey King for any of this no matter what, at least not right away.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I would love a Long Xiaojiao-centered episode of her just getting a chance to genuinely interact outside of world-shattering circumstances with her great-many-times uncle Ao Guang and maybe the other three Great Dragons of the Four Seas! I think it would be neat to see how her beliefs, morals, love of family, and struggles to determine who she wants to be might play off of these much older and much more established dragons (might also be neat to see some of the long and more sordid histories of some of these dragons get brought up like yell at Sun Wukong all you want for being a thief but Ao Guang literally spent years running what was essentially an extortion racket by causing all kinds of weather-based disasters unless humans gave him tons of offerings DX).

Is Wukong the type to use dad jokes almost all the time? Does he in fact make up the worst puns?
Wukong’s basically Bandit from Bluey when it comes to puns and being silly with the younger members of the crew
Absolutely “bullies” Xiaojiao and Xiaotian in a way that makes them laugh:
“Ah, no, you can’t do that.”
“What? Why not?”
“Your horns will fall off.”
“What! No!”
"Yes!"
“Oh my — Xiaotian is he serious?”
“I can’t tell! He told me my tail would fall off if I kept hanging upside down!”
But it’s fine because they punch him when he makes a pun at the wrong time

I'll be talking on my views on Macaque from s1-2 above the cut, and my opinions of him post s3 below the cut for those who don't want spoilers.
Alright, so I was sort of on and off with this fandom from around like Sep/Oct - Dec last year and I did quite a bit of thinking. Things were realized, opinions changed, etc etc. Sorry if this is a bit messy and for all grammar mistakes. Let's get into this:
My present day thoughts on the Six Eared Macaque...
I think it's no surprise to anyone that he's easily one of my favorite characters in the show. It took less than five minutes for my brain to latch onto him. I think he's fun to watch, and an interesting character both in the show and to speculate about in the fandom or aus.
That's about where my positive feelings for him end, because I'd place him as the worst person in the show were it not for LBD herself. Even then, I wouldn't place him that much below her.
His methods are so...personal. He trains Xiaotian for an unspecified amount of time, though it's enough time for to gain his trust to the point where Xiaotian goes on with fighting the smoke monster that he expresses doubts about because he lost horribly to it earlier just because Macaque briefly encourages him.
Then proceeds to betray him, injuring him and taking his powers, then mocking him with his worst insecurities (that Xiaotian likely shared with him in good faith) while he's pinned and helpless for extra lols. Oh, and tries to kill him just to get SWK worked up.
The second time he shows up is to kidnap Xiaotian's friends and force them to fight him, while implying that he's a horrible friend by not sharing his problems and that they're pissed with him for leaving them in the shadows or something. And may I say that is the hardest I've ever seen anyone project onto another person in my life. Like it's impressive. It's almost funny tbh.
When Mac leaves Xiaotian, he says it's cause he thought he'd been tormented enough, but Macaque already knew Xiaotian was beating himself up before he started attacking. He could've stopped before he harmed him (and continued harming his friends) but he didn't. I think he was so freaked out by Xiaotian almost taking out his eye that he made that excuse up on the fly, because it's weak af.
Now, as for redemption...he has no redeeming qualities. At all. 0. Zilch. He's not redeemable and I'd argue he shouldn't be redeemed in the show. I've joked before that I wanted to see him redeemed and also be violent, but real talk, redemption within the show doesn't make much sense.
Every single time he's on screen he's been antagonistic and manipulative, he's shown no desire nor drive to do better. Redemption isn't about other people. He shouldn't need any reconciliation with SWK to do so. It's about realizing that you were in the wrong and striving better yourself, and he has shown no signs of any of that. He's never even shown guilt before.
If the show did want to redeem him, it would probably take like a season with a lot of focus on him, then subsequent episodes showing his growth after all the shit he's pulled. And, for a show as short as this one, that isn't likely to happen. I actually think it works much better in the story's favor to keep him as a villain.
But with Mac, I especially don't appreciate the elevation of his character at the detriment of SWK's.
I've seen some people say we shouldn't really compare them, cause they're both bad in different ways, but I disagree. We can absolutely dictate who is the worse person between Macaque and SWK. They're both flawed, but flawed =/= bad and vice versa.
The main difference between them is simple:
Sun Wukong needs therapy.
Six Eared Macaque needs several restraining orders...and therapy.
But in all seriousness, SWK's actions, although often wrong, come from a place of genuine care and desire to keep those around him safe. His lack of communication is what often leads to hurt, but it's not purposeful harm.
I'd say it can be tracked down to his half a millennia of self-isolation (which I think is indicative of a severe depression), which would lead to both a lack in communication skills and inability to work in a team. Even without that, he's probably used to dealing with problems by himself because that was basically his job throughout all of jttw.
And, for the sake of argument, let's assume that Macaque's version of their history story was 100% true and unbiased.
Leaving your friend for power =/= actively harming and manipulating an innocent for the crime of being close to person who left you and then kidnapping and controlling several more innocents for the crime of being friends with the innocent who knows said person who left you hundreds of years ago.
Now, do I think Macaque's backstory makes him sympathetic? In my honest opinion...no. Not at all. In my eyes he's pathetic, and not in the making me feel pity way, more of the "wow, so this is the reason you're like that, huh?" sort of way. His behavior and insistence on being part of SWK's life one way or another is extremely obsessive.
Having a friend leave you sucks. It hurts like hell, especially when they're your only friend. I would know. But dude, it's been 500 years at least and ~3,200 years at the most. I'm not one to tell you how you should feel when someone wrongs you, but seriously? Do you not have a life? Besides, what currently matters is what's happening now. And now is when he puts Xiaotian in active danger, to the point of nearly killing him, and doesn't have the decency to at least leave his friends out of the mix.
And dipping into jttw (unless they've seriously changed his history with SWK in there) makes him even less sympathetic since his actions lead to the near death of Tang Sanzang, the actual deaths of several monkeys, cannibalism, theft, false accusations against SWK, and general distress and confusion.
Look, I love Macaque as a character in LMK, and I think he's fun to explore in a number of different ways (the backstory and au material is POWERFUL in this one), but I also really just wanna:
Tumblr media
Ya know?
Anyway s3 spoilers and opinions start here:
-
-
-
Macaque is in an unfortunate situation with LBD. He is actively being threatened with death and/or torture to get him to capture Xiaotian and SWK.
...and he's still irredeemable, and doesn't have my sympathy.
I won't blame him for attempting to capture SWK and Xiaotian to save his own skin, I will however blame him for continuing to psychologically torture Xiaotian for literally no reason, as well as causing unnecessary harm to his friends. In fact it's actually detrimental to him to keep mocking and tossing around Xiaotian and his crew, since every time he does it leads to them escaping. But he Still. Keeps. Doing. It. He just enjoys it, and that's how he loses any potential pity I'd have for him otherwise.
The way the show's going in season 3, I'm slightly less certain that Macaque won't get a redemption arc. Because, there's a weird implied focus on him and SWK's past in the s3 finale when Xiaotian rushes to help Xiaojiao.
But there doesn't seem to be much real focus in that scene on every fucked up thing Macaque does in response. Tang even takes the blame for the messed up ritual. Which isn't really his fault since any other action would've ended in Macaque killing Xiaojiao, so it wasn't much of a choice.
And look, I want Macaque and SWK to have an actual conversation as much as the next fan, but I'm realizing I have very different reasons for that than the fandom. I'm not interested in seeing them reconcile, apologize, whatever. I'm just curious to see what the outcome of a real conversation between the two would be, whether a physical or verbal fight, or just more information on that backstory.
Besides, SWK doesn't need to talk to him. There's nothing to say. He's obviously not surprised to see Macaque alive and running around, and his immediate shutdown of Macaque's attempted banter in s1 implies that this isn't the first time they've faced off after the whole death and resurrection thing.
SWK wants to be left alone, and has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with Macaque. He shows no care or concern for him. The sensible thing to do after so long is to move on with life. But Macaque keeps coming of his own volition to try and fuck up SWK's life.
And I still stand the same with SWK himself. Xiaojiao's rant was justified and needed. She's right, he did hurt them several times through his actions (or lack thereof) and he needed to understand that what he was doing was not working. But it's still not comparable to Macaque's intentional harm. Hell, he's the one who caused the ritual to go wrong in the first place. (And SWK sprinting across the clearing to rip Macaque out of his shadow to force him to face his consequences is easily one of my favorite moments in s3).
After all of this, I think the closest thing Macaque could get to a "redemption" in s4 is an enemy-of-my-enemy type alliance. And then leave them alone after all is said and done. Even then, I'd say that wouldn't quite fit him either since he's still obsessing over the whole SWK left me thing for centuries. That doesn't just disappear, alliance or no.
I think he would've been really fun if he'd willingly teamed up with LBD. I don't think it would've been out of character. But I suppose that's what au's are for...

Down Came the Rain and Washed the Bone Out...
Summary: Instead of fire, rain comes down.
Notes: So, look. I know the Samadhi fire was a way to make Xiaojiao more important to the story. I just think it was a dumb idea to use the Samdhi fire for that, considering the fact that dragons can control the weather and Guanyin's vase was mentioned in S2.
-_-
Long Xiaojiao was not having a good time.
Who was kidding her, she was having the worst time. Her body ached like someone had set all of her veins on fire, her bestie probably had a concussion, she was far from home, and Macaque was threatening one of her favorite old men with her own life. And there was still no sign of Sun Wukong.
“I don’t have time for this!” Macaque barked, the cold from the crystal biting into her skin like so many knives. “Tang, finish the ritual! Now!”
“...Alright,” Tang said, reluctance firm in his voice. He began to chant ancient words, each word sitting heavy like the cling of a bell. Slowly, the symbols decorating the ritual site began to glow brighter and brighter, almost blinding.
With each word, her body ached even more. “No! Please!” She struggled, but Macaque’s grip tightened, keeping her suspended in the air despite the pain roaring inside her. “I- I wanna get off this ride! PLEASE! I DON’T WANT TO-”
“MACAQUE!”
Sun Wukong’s voice echoed through the mountains. Xiaojiao could barely hear him, faintly noticing the rings glow magenta and lift up. Tang’s voice continued on, steady and strong despite the panic he must’ve been feeling and the pain that continued to grow and grow. She could hear it, the last bit of the spell-
Wukong launched for Macaque, and the pain of something- something rising up, in her- grew too much-
Xiaojiao threw back her head and screamed as it ripped out, the Samadhi fire whole as something uncorked inside-
And the rain came down.
Xiaojiao felt herself collapse as Wukong slammed into Macaque. She didn’t notice, too busy panting, blinking as the rain fell down. “XIAOJIAO!” Oh, Xiaotian. He was here. She allowed him to prop her up, his worried smile a balm to her stressed nerves. “Are you okay? You- is this you?”
Xiaojiao blinked again as she looked around. Wukong and Macaque had been scuffling, but now they stared as the rain hit the crystal embedded in the shadow monkey’s side. Wherever the rain touched, it shrank back like water dissolving snow until it was gone, leaving Macaque to stare at his hands like he wasn’t sure what they were. The Samadhi fire was aglow in the center, but it was dim, nothing more than embers.
“I think so?” she managed. “I thought…I thought I would have the Samadhi fire in me.” Wasn’t that what her visions had been saying?
“I assumed you would too,” And there was Wukong, staring at her like he was either about to break down laughing or crying and wasn’t sure which to do. He held out his hand in the end. Xiaojiao took it, letting him lift her up. “As far as I know, Ao Lie had the piece embedded in him and made me promise not to tell anyone.”
“You should have.” And there was Li Nezha, staring at the entire scene like he also wasn’t sure whether to break down laughing or crying. “How is the rain doing this? When you asked the Dragon Kings for a storm when Red Boy burned down the valley, it made the fire worse?” It had? Xiaojiao glanced nervously at the fire, but it was still just embers.
Wukong raised a brow, glancing at her like she knew. “I have no idea.” Xiaojiao shrugged back. As far as she knew, dragons did have control over the weather, but her line was so far from that. He cupped his hands and let some rain pour in before taking a drink. His eyes went wide. “How are you doing this?”
“The rain?”
“No, the water. It’s from Guanyin’s ocean.” She could hear Tang gasp- Red Boy must’ve been the demon he had told Xiaotian about, the one that Wukong needed Guanyin’s vase to defeat.
“What?” Nezha said before Xiaojiao could react to that. “That’s impossible.”
“Drink some. It’s sweet.”
Nezha, after a moment, cupped his hands. Xiaojiao pulled off her gloves and cupped her hands as well, letting some of her rain (and, wow, she had made rain) puddle in. She drank it once she was done, noticing Xiaotian do the same without removing his gloves.
And Wukong was right. The rain tasted sweet and clear. Not like the fancy bottled water one of her cousins liked, full of fancy purified spring water, but just… sweet. As Xiaojiao swallowed, she felt whatever aches and pains that remained fade away. Xiaotian’s bruises, including one dark one that covered half of his face, slowly disappeared. "Look at the city!" Sandy called from the edge. "The crystal's all melting away!"
Xiaotian turned and gasped, eyes shining as he looked down at the city far below. The screams had died down, but Xiaojiao's eyes were more focused on Macaque. Anger burned in her chest just from the sight of him. He looked up from studying his hands and made eye contact with her. She could practically see him jolt in realization that she was there, staring at him.
And, like it was all part of his plan, he grinned, bowed, and ducked into a shadow.
"Coward," she huffed to herself, just wanting to pull out her sword and skewer him with it. Maybe he would come back- he couldn't seem to leave Wukong or Xiaotian alone.
"Oh!" She glanced over at Xiaotian's gasp. "Your face!" he said, drawing closer and cupping her face with gentle hands.
"What? Do I have mud somewhere?" The area was getting pretty muddy and, mixed with the snow, it looked like an unappetizing mush. She wuldn’t be surprised if she accidentally kicked some on herself in the rain haze. "Do I have mud on my face? I do, don't I?"
"No, no," His gaze was reverent in a way that made her entire face warm. She was so glad Xiaotian agreed to be her 'just in case' husband. But, her concern was what was on her face. "You have scales."
"I what?" She didn’t have scales. Her parents had to disappoint a very young Xiaojiao that her human form would never have scales. But, now?
“Look!" He pulled out his phone and pulled up the camera, turning on selfie mode. And there, in the glow of the lanterns, Xiaojiao realized he was right. White scales, jade green coloring the edge, lined her eyes and trailed back to her ears and down to her chin. Even cooler was the set of antler horns that now jutted out from her pigtails. She grinned, admiring her teeth, which even seemed to be a little sharper.
She was a member of the dragons, yes. But sometimes, she didn't feel like it, especially with the forming rift between her and her parents. Now, however, she never felt more powerful. She couldn't help but bare her teeth in a grin and Xiaotian wasted no time in snapping a photo.
"Oh!" Tang and Pigsy had come close, probably just to check on them. As the pig demon led Xiaotian back a step to hug his son, Tang cupped her face. He thankfully looked better than at the beginning of the ritual, with the bruises that he said came from Macaque gone in the purified rain, but still guilty. He cupped her face, leaning forward to press their foreheads together. "You look amazing, Xiaojiao."
“Thanks, Tangy.”
"You did great, Xiaojiao," Wukong's voice interrupted the moment, drawing her back to the fact that, oh yeah, he hadn't left, unlike Macaque. "I was worried for a second that the entire mountain was gonna light up in fire and I forgot to bring some purified water just in case." Nezha gaped from behind him, right next to Sandy, who probably had a full lecture on how dangerous that was. Xiaojiao had heard enough lectures about wildfires when she and her family had gone ‘camping’ in the United States. "So," He clapped his hands together. "Thank you."
"Was this part of your plan?" Xiaojiao had to ask. She had a sinking feeling, that, no it wasn't, but she had to ask. "What even was your plan?" Her anger rose. "Did you know I had the Samadhi fire piece in me?!"
"Well, uh..." Wukong sighed. "Yes."
That was enough to unchain the anger inside.
"And you hid it from all of us! Why?! What were you afraid of?!" It was unfair and cruel, but Xiaojiao was furious. She only faintly noticed the rain stop, answering to the heat of her fury, and heard Pigsy push Xiaotian back and away. Good, she didn’t need him jumping in to defend the oh-so-mighty Sun Wukong like he had been the entire trip. "That you were going to have to tear me apart to get your precious Samadhi Fire?!"
Wukong threw his hands up immediately, shaking his head furiously. "No! I thought if I could get the Samadhi fire out of you, without hurting you of course. Then I could put it inside myself." He gestured to his chest, right where Ao Lie’s piece must’ve gone. She could imagine the pain that would happen from that. "Then I don't know, use it to burn up the Lady Bone Demon or something? I was kinda making this up as I went-"
"That was your plan?!"
"That's not a good plan!"
Nezha and Xiaotian's yells did nothing to calm her. Instead, she was imagining Wukong or even Xiaotian throwing their head back with a pained scream as the Samadhi fire sank into them, just like she had only a few minutes ago. It was enough to make her want to throw up.
"Yeah, to be honest, this is the first time I've said it out loud, so..." Wukong shrugged, like it was normal to attempt to put a world-ending fire inside himself.
"We trusted you! All of us! How could you lead us into this fight without a real plan?!” She launched forward, slamming her finger into his chest. “Time and time again, I've watched you put Xiaotian in danger, leaving him to figure everything on his own! Don't you realize you're hurting the people who care about you the most?!"
Her answer was a blank stare.
Xiaojiao felt a sense of unease crawl over her. She was pretty sure that, if the Samadhi fire had worked like expected, Wukong would have had more of a reaction. "You...you do know that we care about you, right?" She thought they had bonded even through her unease about the seeming lack of plan and her own thoughts about him leaving Xiaotian behind.
It was then that she realized Nezha was shaking his head and mouthing "No."
Wukong finally spoke, although he seemed to ignore her question, and Nezha shaking his head. "Now that the Samadhi fire is summoned, you guys head back." He headed to the embers. Despite the wet embers, something gleamed like a star. "I'll handle this."
"What- No!" Xiaojiao launched forward, suddenly determined to make him listen. "Didn't you just hear me?! You- We need to make a real plan-" Her rain could melt the crystal. She could weaken the Lady Bone Demon.
He whirled around so fast that Xiaojiao was knocked off guard. He gripped her shoulders tight, tight enough that Xiaojiao felt tears prick her eyes, and forced her back.
It wasn't until her waist was buried in mud that he realized he was forcing her down.
His eyes burned into her soul, much hotter than the flames. "I know you guys have a problem listening. But please, stay the fuck here. For your own safety." Pigsy and Tang rushed toward her as Xiaotian rushed towards Wukong, begging him to stay and listen.
But he didn't look back, not until he was picking up that star. His smile was soft, just for Xiaotian in that moment. It was there, Pigsy trying to lift her up and yelling for Sandy as Tang clawed through the mud, that she realized that he did care.
Too much.
"I'm sorry, kid."
He pushed the star inside his chest and summoned his Nimbus cloud before the magenta flames could alight. And then he was gone, leaving a trail of purple and gold.
And there, Xiaojiao threw her head back and screamed.
Lightning was the only thing that answered.

Tumblr Messed Up Fill #1
Tumblr media
So Tumblr did a BIG OLD OOPS and published a bunch of my unfinished drafts that I left in my queue at 1 PM... when I set it to 1 AM and intended to finish a couple and then change the time again.
LUCKILY I DIDN’T HAVE THE ENTIRE FILLS IN THE QUEUE AND JUST BITS I ADDED IN TO HOLD SPACE. So... I guess this is how we’re doing this! @winterpower98 here’s some Mentor Swap AU Shadowpeach!
How did you get that scar?/That is not a good hiding spot.
It had been scheduled far in advance and Wukong should have remembered that this was going to happen. The Weather Station needed to let it rain sometimes! It was good for the environment! Good for nature! But Wukong was Wukong and when he trained with Xiaotian for as long as he did he had a tendency to forget the unimportant things like “scheduled downpours” and “when training is actually supposed to end”.
So by the time he managed to crash land a foot away from Mei’s front door after pogo sticking his way off of Mount Huaguo he looked like he’d been dropped into the ocean.
“Cold-cold, cold and wet!” He yelped, shoving the staff back into his ear and trying to hold his jacket over his head as best he could, which did just as much good as it did during the ride. Which was “barely anything”. “Ah shit, it’s cold why can’t they make the rain not COLD!?”
He continued into the building, shuddering as he felt rain water seeping through every bit of fabric he wore, even his shoes the traitors. He immediately started ripping off his shirt, at the very least wanting to get some of the drenched clothing off him, and he froze when he heard a yelp from the other side of what should have been a very empty entry way given Mei was supposed to be out of the house.
A very familiar yelp.
“Why aren’t you are your own house!?” The voice yelled, and as Wukong pulled his shirt over his head he found the voice’s own staring at him with wide eyes alight with a mix of confusion and horror.
“UH, I think I should ask you that, Macaque!” He accused, turning sideways and walking backwards into the building with a raised eyebrow. “Why are you in Mei’s house? Are you hiding in Mei's house!? That is not a good hiding spot!"
“Wouldn’t you like to know, Monkey Boy?” Macaque said snarkily with a smirk.
“Monkie KID, and yeah, that’s why I asked,” Wukong snarked right back, holding his shirt and jacket out in front of him with a frown. “Also, you’re a monkey so...”
“Oh shut up.”
"And you look like you nearly drowned," Wukong chuckled, ringing his shirt out and pointedly not mentioning the blush he saw forming on the other's face. Yet. "It's raining cats and dogs and I’m pretty bad to, but you shouldn't be that bad."
"... don't laugh," Macaque grumbled, doing much the same to his scarf. "I was trying to get here when the rain was getting really bad and I... fell. Off the docks."
Wukong immediately burst into cackles.
“I told you not to laugh you asshole!” Macaque snapped, baring his teeth and trying to puff up his fur in annoyance but failing miserably with the sheer amount of water weighing him down. If anything it probably just made him look... adorably sad. Like a puppy. But a human sized monkey.
“I-I’m sorry!” Wukong held his sides, trying his very best to stop laughing. He also failed miserably, if not even more so than Macaque. “It’s just imagining you, YOU, falling off the docks? Just! You’re practically an acrobat! You’re usually way cooler than that!”
As Wukong continued to fail Macaque’s face softened as he stopped barring his teeth in warning and stared at the other young man.
“... you think I’m cool?” He asked softly, attempting to smooth down his fur and brush the water out of it.
“Kinda?” Wukong said with a half snicker, finally having himself under control. “Cool enough I guess.”
Macaque hummed, giving up on his attempts to dry off with a sigh. It was pointless to try to dry off with his fur like this, not without some kind of towel or brush. And he would be damned if he let Wukong let himself shake dry! That was not going to happen.
So instead he turned to the other, watching as he laid out his tip layers on his arm and turned around.
And something caught his eye.
Multiple somethings.
“How did you get that scar?”
Wukong tensed, not enough for him to stop moving but more than enough for Macaque to notice that he was walking away much slower than he needed to.
"Depends on which one you mean," he answered eventually. He reached up to pull on his hair, frowning as it dripped more water on him.  "Hold that thought until I come back."
And so he did. Macaque watched the other leave and stood in the open room, awkward and dripping sea and rain water all over Mei's floor.
He debated leaving. Just walking out the door and avoiding the awkward conversation that was sure to be leveled in his direction when the human returned, but before he could even make the decision to decide on an option something brought and green was lobbed at his head and wrapped around his face.
“WHAT IN THE-”
“Towel off before Mei gets angry we both tracked in water,” Wukong said, mischievous chuckle resounding through the air before Macaque managed to unwrap the towel from his face. “I’ve got something else that’ll help out after.”
Macaque was going to ask what that something was before the words died in his throat, the sight before him making him pause in confusion and barely held back amusement.
“You have Monkey King themed PJs?” He asked, toweling off his head first. “At Mei’s?”
“Sometimes I stay over.” Was all Wukong said, shrugging as if it was nothing. “Considering you’re here and I don’t see signs of a break in I assume those plum PJs in the same closet are yours.”
“I DON’T HAVE PAJAMAS HERE I DON’T STAY THAT OFTEN!” Macaque snapped, and his face flushed a deep red in embarrassment before he saw Wukong’s victory smirk. “... you made that up to make me slip that I’ve been here before.”
“And you took it hook, line, and sinker,” Wukong said playfully, grabbing the monkey demon’s arm and using a second towel he had to dry it off. “I wasn’t kidding about the PJs though.”
“O-oh...” was all Macaque could reply with as the information slowly sunk in before he ripped his arm away. “I can do that myself!”
“Then do it and come inside!”
~
Macaque was... mostly dry after a couple minutes, enough for Wukong to drag him into the bathroom and instruct him to change and use the blow dryer he has shoved into his hands while he mopped the floor. And as much as Macaque disliked the noise... he couldn’t argue that the warm air of the device was a welcome change from the icy seawater against him.
He may have looked like an extra puffed up fur ball when he was done and refused to come out until he at least had the PJs (short sleeved and indeed covered in plums) on to hide the worst of it.
Didn’t stop Wukong from devolving into cackles at his expense once again.
“Hold on, let me do something,” Wukong offered, and guided him to sit down on the couch sideways, situating behind him with the other pulled against his chest and a comb in hand. “At least I can help with your hair... if it counts as hair.”
“... I don’t know if it does,” Macaque replied, finding himself at a loss for what to do and say in this situation.
They were enemies, right?
Shouldn’t Wukong... be chasing him out of the building?
Now sitting him down to- OH NO!
“ACTUALLY WA-”
Macaque froze as Wukong’s fingers brushed against his scalp and the teeth of the comb brushed through his hair, far more gentle than Macaque could remember anyone touching his hair before, and he went limp in Wukong’s arms like putty.
“Knew that’d get ya,” he felt Wukong say as much as he heard him say it, and the hands and comb continued through his hair and fur and he couldn’t even muster up any coherent words to snark back at him. Just a frustrated grumble. “Xiaotian does this to me a lot. And to his monkeys. So I figured this would be... ya know, nice for you.”
They stayed like that for a good while, Wukong brushing his fingers and the comb through puffed up fur and pulling out tangles Macaque didn’t even know he had on the back of his neck. It felt... strange. To trust someone that you spent so much of your time fighting against, flirting with awkwardly in the midst of battle, never thinking that the two of you would just sit and do anything calmly together.
But here they were. On Mei’s couch. Macaque feeling a purr rumble up in his chest as Wukong groomed through his hair and fur in a gesture he clearly admitted he knew the implications of.
“They’re from before,” Wukong said after a while, after he rested his head on Macaque’s shoulder and started working through the fur on his arms. “Before Red took me in... back before I had the staff to fight with.”
And as much as Macaque wanted to ask, and if he really tried he knew he probably could, he chose not to push it when he heard the way Wukong’s tone changed. Something equally nostalgic and melancholy.
“I think they make you look cool too,” was what he said instead.
“... We’re both pretty cool.”

Secret kisses and Touching 2, 14, 22, 23, and 44. Secret Silktea relationship, except both spider fam and Monkey fam actually know! Half of them don’t care enough to say anything (Pigsy,Tang,Spider Queen,Wukong,Syntax) while the other half wants them to reveal it when they’re ready (Min Yi,MK,Mei,Goliath,Sis) - Pixel Anon
Affection meme
49. secret kisses
2. running fingers through hair
14.putting an arm around the other’s waist
22.falling asleep on the other’s shoulder
23. carrying the other one in their arms
44.sitting on the other’s lap
this took me forever to put together because for some ungodly reason i couldn't figure out the scenario
so i decided on a little vignette compilation of sorts
--
They knew what they were doing.
Of course they knew what they were doing. It was in either of their best interests to keep this a secret. Just because the clan had stopped their crusade to take over the city and their queen had dialed down the ‘revenge’ ideas, didn’t mean there wasn’t still bad blood between his clan and Sandy’s family.
And it wasn’t too difficult, it just meant that when they were all working together for some greater threat or whatever that they’d have to be sneaky. It was easy stealth was one of Huntsman’s greatest Attributes and suspecting Blue of anything was like suspecting a small dog of knocking over a bulldozer.
It wasn’t too hard to simply keep their hands to themselves. Or at least, it wasn’t hard for Sandy, Huntsman was quickly finding his self control lacking in regard to being in such a situation with his… well, with him. But could anyone blame him? Blue was more or less the hottest guy he’d ever ran into before and he was kinda-sorta DATING him! How could he not want to climb that like a tree at all times?
Especially when he was always being so stupidly fucking charming. Sure the ‘needlessly nice’ stuff wasn’t something he particularly appreciated, but it was starting to grow on him, if only on the amount of restraint he must have to keep it up all the time.
Soooo yeah maybe he was purposefully pushing their luck a little, but in his defense he wanted to see how much desire based frustration it would take before ol’ Blue would just pin him against a wall and make him regret wondering.
--
Syntax had shooed him away from being a nuisance at his worktable, so naturally, Huntsman had to go be a nuisance at someone else’s worktable. Thankfully Sandy was far more agreeable to the company, and thankfully the bid of ‘Bugging Syntax first’ kept his alibi solid. He wasn’t just going over to see Blue he just wanted to be a louse and his normal target had already locked him out of his room. And so nobody really suspected anything when he started to peer over Sandy’s side to watch him tighten this or that thing on this or that device.
And it was pretty damn fun to see just how much of a ‘nuisance’ he could be. This particular bout resulting ih Huntsman being pressed against the car engine Blue had been working on, feeling the orange hair slide between his claws and messing up the stylized mohawk and shuddering when he felt those huge hands almost entirely encompass either of his thighs while keeping him aloft. He hissed through his teeth as he felt Blue give one of his legs a testing squeeze and rolled his hips forward a bit-
“Fish Demon? I need to get another set of eyes on these schematics or I'll actually go insane.” By the time Syntax looked up from his clipboard Sandy was working on the engine again and Huntsman was leaning against his work area and had barely had the opening to whip out one of his knives and his portable sharpener.
Though Sandy’s hair was unable to be fixed and fell to a side as he smiled at Syntax and took the offered blueprints from him.
--
He wasn’t a big fan of those domestic snatches of time, he wasn’t.
It was mostly an instinctual response, Spiders were pack bonders, so of course when his internal senses started categorizing Sandy as ‘pack’ then he’d relax without intending to while being pulled in with a hand on his waist.
Which was definitely the reason why he was curled up to Sandy’s side, the cool slick feeling of his scales strange against his more leather-like skin. That stupid instinct was the only real reason why he felt so comfortable and like he could practically fall asleep like this.
He felt Blue’s hand gently start running up and down his side and dammit that wasn’t playing fair, it wasn’t his fault that he had been having sleeping problems lately and was rapidly getting drowsy.
He could feel Blue’s hum as the world started to drift away-
“Hey Sandy what do you think- Uhhhh”
“Oh, hello Xiaotian.”
“You know you’ve got a spider on you, right?”
“Oh yeah, Looked like he was having some paranoia problems, took a bit of wheedling to get out but Huntsman here was up for like four days straight ‘till now!”
“Did… Did you slip him your sleepy tea?”
“Of course not! That would be super unethical! Also I'm pretty sure he’s still semi conscious and passively listening without any critical thought right now since he only just dozed off and would probably wake up angry if he overheard anything like that!”
“....right… so anyway-”
--
The brat knew.
Dammit he knew the brat knew. She definitely fucking knew.
He should have known better than to try anything with that Professional Snoop underfoot. But He’d had plans with Blue before having to get stuck with the brat tonight because the Queen needed Syntax’s expertise and the Sister was on shift at work and Goliath already had plans doing who knows what, and he was stuck with Minyi since he ‘didn’t have any plans’
He’d dragged his feet on the idea of cancelling with Blue, but he’d fucking done it so nobody could say he didn’t contribute to the upkeep of their clan’s youngest. It was just his luck that Sandy had been fine with coming over instead, and the brat had overheard some of the conversation and got excited about ‘Mr Sandy’ coming over to visit. The brat had insisted on stringing some of her fake flowers into his hair before he arrived, after dubbing him ‘suitably pretty’ (her words) she’d done up her own hair as similarly as she could because he certainly wasn’t helping her with her weird pre-’company is coming’ rituals.
And… Blue was a hit with the brat. He had an infinite amount of patience for the inane childish babbling, stooped low so she could string the remaining fake flowers in her possession (why did she have so many fake flowers?) into his beard, and offered to fix dinner for the lot of them (which was for the best since the brat was such a picky eater she could barely stomach some of his specialties)
And… he was not jealous of a six year old for how she was able to crawl into Blue’s lap while the lot of them watched some inane mystery show for the character drama alone since the brat called and explained the mystery within the first three minutes.
Blue was a bit awkward on the sofa, it made sense, Goliath would normally sit on the floor for how the height and width of the couch was not designed with bigger demons in mind, and Blue was considerably bigger than Goliath. So while the brat was cozy as could be in the place of honor, Huntsman was stuck perched on the arm of the couch as to not be crushed into it trying to squeeze in beside Blue.
Not that that would be a wholly unpleasant experience, but the presence of the brat made it go from tempting to awkward. Nonetheless, part of Sandy trying to get comfortable had included one of his arms resting on the back of the couch, and while it seemed the brat wasn’t paying attention, it slid down to wrap around his shoulders.
When the time came Minyi didn’t need to be told it was bed time for her, she loudly announced it herself, changed into her pajamas, and after saying goodnight to the both of them went on with a
“I am going to sleep now! And I will not be out of my room until morning so if anything were to be happening I certainly won’t know it, because I will be asleep.”
She smiled widely at Huntsman and closed her door.
Nosey little brat.
--
Tang huffed a quiet laugh as Sandy gingerly began to lift Huntsman into the air, his broken leg not quite able to be splinted just yet, let alone looked at properly. It seemed the lot of them had suffered some pretty nasty injuries from this last threat (and no doubt it would have been worse if their team and the Spider Clan hadn’t joined forces) including Tang himself despite being on the sidelines for most of it, he was pretty sure his shoulder was dislocated, and the cut on his forehead was still sluggishly bleeding all over the right side of his face, but compared to some of the others he was basically fine.
So once He was able to pop his arm back into place (Ouch) he took to handling cleanup with the only other ‘perfectly normal person’ here, a woman maybe a few years his junior, he’d seen her every so often with the Spider Clan (or rather, with Syntax) but he didn’t know her name.
“Do you think they actually think they’re being subtle?” Her words caught his attention and he turned to glance at the woman. She was in the middle of splinting Xiaojiao’s broken wrist and at Tang’s questioning glance, she nodded at Sandy and Huntsman. Oh!
“I’m sure Sandy thinks he’s the pinnacle of subtlety” Tang responded. He was pretty sure the ‘thing’ that had developed between their friend and the most brutal of the Spider Clan was the worst kept secret on the team since Red Son had started hanging out with Xiaotian and Xiaojiao on the weekends.
“They are so cute when you just walk in on them.” Xiaojiao said around a snicker. “Like how they jump apart like when you flip a magnet over to the matching side.”
“Does your team have a betting pool? My brother organized one for the clan, and if they do anything damning within the next month i win the pot.”
“No! Ohh man we should get one started up! Hey Pigsy! You wanna make a betting Pool for Sandy and Huntsman’s secret romance?”
“Why the hell would i want to do that?”
“Finally have dirt on Sandy after decades of him never being embarrassed about anything ever?” Tang offered with a shrug.
Pigsy thought for a moment and shrugged back before going back to fussing over Xiaotian. “Sure. Who’s bettin’ what?”

Scattered Cicadas - Chapter Fifteen: Distressing Encounters
Tang faces a foe more powerful than Lady Bone Demon.
----------
Tang ran his fingers through Xiaotian’s fur as the young monkey slept. He smiled at the content look on the kid’s face.
He didn’t like this timeline.
These quiet moments of safety and peace were becoming increasingly infrequent this cycle. Tang did his best to be a comforting presence for his son, but the threat of their enemy always loomed in the back of everyone’s minds.
Tang looked at the clock and sighed. If he was going to get any work done before the shop opened he would have to get going soon. Tang placed a kiss against Xiaotian’s forehead before standing to leave.
“Baba?”
Xiaotian was looking up at Tang with half open eyes, obviously still more asleep than awake.
“Go back to sleep, Xiaotian,” Tang said as he resumed running his hand through his kid’s fur. “I was just checking on you before I left.”
“Where ya goin’?”
“I need to head to the shop early to do some paperwork. You don’t need to be up yet.”
“M’kay,” Xiaotian slurred, already falling back asleep from the sensation of Tang stroking his head. “Be safe.”
“I will.” Tang leaned over and placed another kiss on Xiaotian’s head. “I love you.”
“Love you.”
Tang’s heart leapt. It was the first time Xiaotian had confessed his feelings to him this cycle. He smiled down at the once more sleeping figure.
He probably wouldn’t remember this conversation later, but Tang was proud of how much progress Xiaotian was making. The amount of emotional trauma he had been subjected to this cycle was immense. That his loving spirit hadn’t been extinguished was a miracle. Tang was going to do his absolute best to nurture that spirit back to full strength no matter what.
Tang left the apartment and made his way to his antique and artifact repair shop. He was Tripitaka once again this cycle and seemed to have developed a knack for tinkering with relics over the years.
Pigsy, in contrast, was a semi-retired mercenary who liked to hang out at the shop when he had nothing else to do. It was an interesting change in dynamics with Tang being the busy one with a shop while Pigsy loitered around distracting him.
Not that he minded seeing his husband for most of the day.
Tang unlocked the shop and made his way to the back to put away his coat. He picked up several sheets of paper and began working on checking his inventory.
If it had only been Pigsy and himself swapped around, Tang might have found this cycle to be enjoyable. Unfortunately for nearly everyone, that wasn’t the case.
Tang frowned as he absently made a note to order more clockwork springs for his personal repair kit.
This timeline was… pretty bad. It seemed that there was some new crisis every week that would leave horrible emotional damage on anyone involved. Worse yet was the demon who was responsible for the majority of the trauma.
The Monkey King.
Tang shuddered as he remembered the first time he saw the cruel expression of the monster that wore the face of a member of his family.
Tang thought the cycles where he was the villain were bad enough, but at least he could choose to be reformed.
The Monkey King was a bloodthirsty and malicious foe that made any evil version of himself seem tame in comparison.
This anomaly in personality was the result of a plan hatched by Wukong and Macaque hundreds of years ago. Early on during the Journey to the West, the two monkeys had swapped places, with no one being the wiser. So while Wukong was off plotting his revenge against Heaven, Macaque was the one who learned humility and love from Tripitaka and the others.
The end result was the Monkey King being sealed under a mountain with his own staff by Macaque with the assistance of Queen Iron Fan and Red Son who wielded the Samadhi Fire.
Not without a steep price, however.
Macaque had lost his right eye. Red Son had almost been consumed by the sacred flames until Guanyin placed a hoop around the boy’s neck, sealing the flames and unfortunately his memories of being a demon as well. His parents were forced to keep him a bit at arms length to prevent the seal from breaking.
Tang clenched his pen as he thought about the more recent events.
Mei, who was being emotionally neglected by her parents, had witnessed Xiaotian’s adoptive father, the Yellow Wind Demon, being freed from his mink form. She had attempted to fight him, only to be blown away. Once she returned with her family’s spear, she managed to force the demon to retreat. Macaque had then proclaimed he would take her on as his student.
But the worst was yet to come.
Yellow Wind Demon tricked Xiaotian into removing the staff that was sealing the Monkey King away. It was then that the horrible truth had been revealed.
Xiaotian was a clone of the Monkey King.
Tang had to stop and take a few breaths as nausea rushed through him. Luckily Xiaotian had become independent enough that the Monkey King couldn’t just dispel him, but that didn’t stop Tang from having nightmares about it.
Mei and Red Son had rushed off to save Xiaotian from Monkey King’s clutches, and Tang had followed after them. The pure hate the demon monkey had sent his way when he had recited the tightening sutra for the first time in all the cycles to rescue the kids would be seared into his memory for years to come.
Xiaotian had turned against his creator and now lived with Tang and Pigsy in their apartment. The trauma of being a copy of that monster was still strong, but Tang intended to smooth it out with endless kindness and love.
Tang pushed his glasses up and rubbed his eyes as the image of a sinisterly grinning Monkey King filled his head once more.
He had been extremely lucky that he hadn’t been recognized as Tripitaka by the demon. He had no doubt the Monkey King would then stop at nothing to hunt him down for turning Macaque against him. Not that it had been too hard once he and the others had pointed out to Macaque how abusive the Monkey King was in their relationship.
Tang sighed as he tried to focus on his inventory list.
He hated feeling this powerless. The Monkey King was the most terrifying adversary he had faced across the timelines. Worse than even Lady Bone Demon and the Mayor. He was going to get ulcers from how worried he constantly felt.
The bell above the front door chimed, signalling an entering customer. Had he forgotten to keep the sign flipped to closed?
“I’m sorry,” Tang said, not turning from his paperwork. “But the shop is closed at the mome-”
A paw clasped around his mouth and a strong arm wrapped around his waist, pulling him close against someone. Tang dropped his papers as his glasses fell from his face.
“Hello Tripitaka,” a horrifyingly familiar voice said.
Tang turned in terror to see the sneering face of the Monkey King leaning close into his own.
“I missed you so much.”
No no no no no!
How had he found out?!
“Let’s go find Liu Er and the kid and go home now, hmm?”
Tang’s blood ran cold.
Monkey King didn’t want him dead. It was so much worse than that.
He wanted Tang to be a part of his twisted family with Macaque and Xiaotian.
The thought of being used against his old friend and son to make them comply made Tang’s pulse quicken.
He couldn’t let that happen!
Adrenaline rushed through him as previous years of fighting experience kicked in.
Tang shoved his foot back into his captor’s, managing to catch Monkey King by surprise and push him off balance. The strength of the Earth suddenly seemed to flow through him as he grabbed the demon’s arms and managed to throw him over his head into one of the displays on the wall.
Instinctively, Tang raised his hands as another power came forth. He quickly called out the tightening sutra while casting a binding spell simultaneously. The Monkey King snarled in pain as his fillet squeezed his head and ropes of golden-yellow light wrapped around him.
Tang waved his hands and recited another spell, summoning several domed barriers of light around the demon as he knew the ropes wouldn’t hold for long. He would worry about how he was doing this once he was out of danger and not running on autopilot
“You’ll regret that!” The Monkey King bared his fangs at Tang as he strained against the magic ropes, several of them already beginning to snap.
“The only thing I regret, Wukong,” Tang said coldly, his hands glowing golden-yellow as he began to manipulate the Earth beneath the shop, “was not being a good enough teacher to show you the error of your ways.”
The Monkey King snarled in defiance as two enormous slabs of rock burst through the floor and fused together around the barriers holding the demon. Tang rushed forward and placed the strongest seal he knew onto the makeshift prison.
It wouldn’t keep the insanely powerful demon trapped permanently, but it would buy Tang enough time to get to his husband and son and escape to somewhere safe.
Tang picked his glasses up and ran from the shop, placing another seal on the building itself for good measure. A few of the friendlier shopkeepers from the neighboring buildings were standing outside.
“Are you alright Tang?”
“We heard a loud crash coming from your shop.”
“The Monkey King is trapped inside,” Tang said a bit breathlessly. The shopkeepers looked panicked. “He’s after me. I need to get my family to safety. Can you make sure this street is evacuated before he escapes?”
“Holy shit!”
“Y-yeah! We’ll take care of it! Just go get somewhere safe!”
“Thank you. You all might want to stay away for a while as well in case he tries to use you to get to me,” Tang said. They all paled a little at that and quickly left after wishing him good luck.
Tang took off at a sprint towards his apartment. He had left his phone in the back of the shop with his coat. Hopefully it was still early enough that neither Pigsy or Xiaotian had left yet.
The adrenaline was quickly wearing off, and he felt the powers he had used ebb away entirely. Tang would have normally been endlessly fascinated at this new development, but the threat of the Monkey King was still hanging over him. He would have to examine what had just happened later once they were all somewhere safe.
There was an explosion in the distance, followed by an enraged roar.
Tang grit his teeth as he ignored the stitch in his side and ran faster.
He really didn’t like this timeline.
----------
And here we have the second most popular AU by @winterpower98, the absolute angst-fest that is the Swap AU.
The scene where Wukong shows up is directly referencing this comic that got commissioned by @stylishbutdefinitelyillegal.
I’m not sure if I managed to capture Tang’s thoughts on this timeline clearly or if I just managed to give a brief, crappy summary of it instead. :/
And what’s up with those powers from past cycles showing up? That’s certainly never happened before.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
Until next time!

Prompt if you’re interested: Sun Wukong loses his memories and only remembers his warlord days. He’s over the moon to be an uncle (Red Son) and… surprised? To be a dad, but he’s down to roll with it.
Oh- after taking his staff back, of course. Because look bud, it’s cool if you wanna play with some of daddy’s things, but he’s not gonna let you keep them.
He should've been relieved.
He should've been happy.
Sun Wukong was back! Qi Xiaotian hadn't killed him with his stupid blunder! His mentor was back and everything was fine, even if Xiaotian still had no idea who he was and Azure Lion was still in charge. Sun Wukong would know what to do. They would figure something out!
Except...
"Okay, that's really cute, bud-" The staff gleamed in the air before landing in Wukong's hands. "But I need that back." Xiaotian lunged to grab it but a tail wrapped around him, hoisting him off his feet.
It shouldn't have been like this.
Sun Wukong stared at him with a little smirk with his eyes blank of recognition. Behind him, Yellowtusk and Peng gripped a frozen Red Son, staring at the monkey. He had been gaping at him with open horror since he had patted his head and complimented his "nephew" for "growing into a nice young man." A faint pat on his own head returned his mind to his amnesiac mentor.
"I'll let you play with it later, okay?"
"Play-" Xiaotian finally managed to sputter. He made him sound like he was five! "I'm not playing!" He tried to lunge forward again, maybe grab his mentor's shoulders and shake him, but the tail squeezed and he gasped. "You gave it to me!" he managed to wheeze. "Monkey King, you have to remember-"
There was a chuckle. "I don't think I would do something like that, bud." He reached out and pinched his cheek. It was a touch too hard but Xiaotian couldn't bring himself to care. "It's very important to me. Right, Azure?"
A hand wrapped around his mentor's shoulder.
That was the worst part of this.
"Right, Wukong," Azure smiled at Xiaotian as he drew them closer. It sickened him to see that smile. He looked like a proud husband. Like he was Xiaotian's proud father. "With some more training, you will give it."
"Yeah! But for now..."
The staff disappeared in a glint of gold and Red faintly whimpered "No..."
"It's mine."

if you’re still taking prompts, i was wondering if you could do one where Canon! MK and Wukong meet Mortality Swap! MK and Wukong?
He hated this.
The foot of his alternate self slammed into his palm, the force almost enough to make him slide back. Sun Wukong held firm though, taking advantage to grab other him’s foot and throw. It wasn’t very far and Other Him somersaulted, landing on his feet with the ease of a dancer.
His grin grew wider.
“Impressive. Very impressive.”
There was a flash of gold, off in the distance, followed by a dark spot. Wukong ignored it. He couldn’t let this version of himself take his eyes off him. Otherwise, he would do the same thing to his kid that he did to the Qi Xiaotian of this twisted, upside down world.
“I can show you more impressive things.”
Wukong sprinted forward, not letting Other Him react to the snark. The punch to the face was dodged. The kick to the stomach wasn’t. That earned him a few blows, but Wukong stood firm, dodging another and launching out with his elbow.
He hated this. He hated this so much.
Could this have been him? Once, a few centuries ago? Wukong wasn’t sure how though. He had never thought to take up the warlord position again, not after sealing away DBK.
Was that the difference? Or was it a stroke of luck? He didn’t know.
And that was the worst thing.
