#but I LOVE writing Eddie pov bc I can be in love with Richie..
rubdown · 2 years

“Why don’t I get you two started off with something to drink?” Richie says, remembering he’s here working and not actually trapped in a torrid love triangle with two strangers.
“Can I just get some ice water?” Eddie says, taking his seat across from Myra. He wishes Eddie was sitting on the opposite side, and the blinds were open. Richie thinks he’d really like to see the water at sunset, just knowing the beauty of it would soothe his stomach. It always calms Richie down, anyway. He could look at the water forever and never get bored. That’s part of the reason why he took this job - the romance of it, beautiful scenery, wind in his hair, Titanic every day. Well, the first half of Titanic. Well, the middle of it, anyway.
“Shrimp cocktail,” says Myra, the Billy Zane in Titanic of the day. That makes Eddie the Rose, and he’s the Jack. He sighs to himself. He’d much rather have lived a life that would allow him to be the Rose, although he sure wouldn’t mind sketching Eddie’s tasteful nude.
“That’s not a drink,” Richie says, but she ignores him to reach across the table and dig her claws into Eddie’s arms. Richie tries not to be jealous over this and goes to fetch Eddie’s glass of water and to put in the shrimp cocktail order for the missus.
“Ben, when you make this one,” Richie says glumly. “Can you use the old shrimp?”
“Richie, you know I can’t do that,” Ben says, but he seems sorry about it.
“Fine,” Richie sniffs. “Break my heart. See if I care. Billy Zane is out there with my imaginary husband and you won’t feed her old shrimp.”
“Billy Zane is here?” Ben says.
Richie brings the water and the shrimp cocktail out to the table just as Eddie is sliding some paperwork over to his wife. It’s probably like a mortgage for a huge mansion with a pool and a waterslide, or the lease to a brand new cherry red convertible that can fly like the car at the end of Grease, or adoption papers for three golden retriever puppies, or a movie contract with Steven Spielberg to star in ET 2, or whatever else she stole from Richie’s ultimate MASH as a teen, the first being Eddie as a husband.
From my IT 2 fanfiction Off the Hook!!! This fanfiction was supposed to just be able to fit into 4 screenshots from my notes app in a response to a tweet, but it got too long and I was like WELL, let me just expand it as much as I can now. Richie lays eyes on Eddie on the restaurant cruise ship where he's serving and is instantly into him and unbeknownst to him, Eddie is about to ask for a divorce from his wife on their anniversary date on the boat!!!! Now that's fanfiction baby. I feel like I was writing Richie as having an intensely swirling inner psyche but talking out loud like everything he's saying is normal and followable... he has experienced Love At First Sight and is now spiraling out of control because the object of that feeling is MARRIED, to a TERRIBLE restaurant goer, who is being NASTY. And he wants to be nasty right back!
But on what grounds... to what end? What do these people have to do with him?? You know when you create an elaborate future with somebody you don't know but are deeply attached to because you are at work and don't know what you're doing with your life??? Richie wanting a life he doesn't have so bad that he believes this woman is ripping all of his wildest dreams out of his hands... in his mind he could be with Eddie, it was foretold in childhood in his MASH. It does not make sense but maybe it will work out anyway. And it does!!! I like the idea of a Richie who is saying a bunch of off the wall shit to Ben who is a good natured sweetie trying his best to follow. I was also LOLing to myself at Myra dead serious ordering a shrimp cocktail like it was a beverage and Richie being like.... ok..... Entering Richie's mind palace is so fun and writing him as being uncontrollably romantic and horny and thinking about Titanic because he's on a boat is so fun!

mother please give me some crumbs ive been waiting for another fic from you in over a YEAR!! I NEED to know- in your richie pov of grow as we go, can you tell us what we can expect? like are we gonna get it like a carbon copy of grow as we go, but just richies version (no hate/shade lol im genuinely curious cause i know some people do that- which isnt a bad thing ofc!!) or are we getting bonus scenes?
Lmao your opening is hilarious I love you 🤣🤣🤣 I do apologize for not posting anything for so long, it’s been the longest I went without doing so.. Ya girl has had a rough past year, but NEVERMIND THAT
You ask and I shall deliver!! I’ll tell you what I plan to do without giving anything away (not that it really matters ig??? bc if yall read grow as we go then you know how it will pan out lol)
SO. There WILL be carbon copies of only some things, especially conversations. Not EVERYTHING and probably not EVERY conversation, except with Eddie. It’s going to feature the same dialogue in that aspect, but from Richie’s view and his emotions. I also would LIKE to add more dialogue to some scenes, I’ve been rereading Grow As We Go a lot to see what exactly I need to do to make this fic work and flow well, without accidentally having any plotholes, and I think that adding more dialogue to some scenes would be nice.
There are going to be different scenes too. Obviously in GAWG there were points in time where Richie was not present around Eddie. This doesn’t mean I’m going to write what Richie was doing, as things were happening with Eddie without him
Just like in GAWG, I plan to have a few flashback scenes.
I’m also going to touch on a few things that were mentioned more than once in my fic, but didn’t delve too much into detail with.
I hope this answers your question, nonny! I’m excited for this fic, as I DO think it also has the potential to be even longer than GAWG. And she was over 14k words long! My goal is to hit 20k words in “Richie’s version” 🤣 that may be a stretch, but I think it’s very possible.
She’s still a work in progress and it PROBABLY won’t be done by Christmas but I am hoping!!!

Just a thought.
I think in the fandom we see a lot more of Richie’s POV of things, where it’s Richie being hopelessly in love and so smitten and though it’s always stated that Eddie feels the same, I don’t really ever see much of Eddie’s thoughts on being in love with Richie being deep and thoroughly talked about. I have a theory of why i think this is but that’s for another post and anyways I just wanna see some of that? Like maybe i should write some idk but I just wanna hear how much Edddie loves and adores Richie as well because he really does.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the way Richie loves Eddie and could write about it all day long. But I’d like to see it the other way around as well

the reason that person wrote an essay about your work isn't bc they were trying to drag you or whatever and they specifically said they didn't think you shouldn't have written it but because they believed and wanted to prove your fic in its untagged state can trigger people sensitive to sexual assault. i'm sending you this ask off anon because i don't want you to construe this as a faceless user "harassing" you but you need to stop pretending this kind of criticism is bullying or "mean words"
at the end of the day i can't convince you to believe that certain behaviors are rape but you need to understand that a character having rough sex with another character who is frightened/non-consenting WILL read as rape no matter how much you the author try to say that they secretly like it, ESPECIALLY when the fic isn't even from their pov
Actually, no, it was an attack. If it had been a commentary on consent or why fics should be tagged correctly, like the piece was originally framed, then maybe I’d understand, though not agree. But they tore apart my entire fic, from my style of writing, to the way Eddie spoke and dressed, to Richie’s history of drug abuse (which was pertinent for the story and not, as they argued, just a cheap way to make Richie edgy) to the things they ate. How is that anything but an attack?
I’ve argued this again and again, but Richie is not a rapist here. He always stops when Eddie tells him to, and during the scene you mention, it’s dubious consent because Richie’s drunk, but Eddie does want it. It’s not non-consensual.
I’m also confused why the writer didn’t stand by their opinions? They uploaded it anonymously on an empty account and then deleted it hours after first uploading it. It seems like such cowardly behaviour, to criticise something behind a mask and then take it down. I can’t respect that. Maybe they could have reached out to me instead, and spoken with me about it. Not spent weeks fixated on this fic, just to write a huge piece dissecting it and tearing apart something I put a lot of time and effort into, because I love this fandom. Twisting my words and story into something they aren’t is extremely hurtful, and I won’t pretend it isn’t. But I guess my feelings don’t matter to you, so what’s the point in even saying this.

you mentioned possibly doing a ben or mike writing guide.. would you.. be willing to post a mike one. i'm plotting a fic and im struggling to get my mans down?? also i think abt ur fics weekly bare minimum.
hi there!!! i did my best. i tried to not sound preachy or like a know it all bc y’all know i can barely write. i hope this is helpful in some way!! disclaimer of of course this is all just my opinion & there’s no wrong way to write, you’re the only person who can tell your story!!
i think the first really important decision you have to make as Person Writing Mike is his
family & background
-are both of his parents alive?
-if yes, what’s their relationship like?
-if no, who’s his primary caretaker? what’s their relationship like?
-if no, when did they die? did he cope well with it? what’s his relationship with their memory like?
these are really really where you gotta start to write mike imo. or any character! i think one thing stephen king is to be admired for is he doesn’t neglect the parent-child relationship as so many people who write youth do. your parents are the most important people in your life for a long time. i don’t think there’s a wrong or ooc way to answer the above questions tbh. canon has really left a wide open field for you to run amuck in.
(example: i’ve mentioned in the past that my & tfat mike being a small adult is no mistake and intentional. it’s a bit of a throwaway scene, but i mention in on pointe that mike’s parents are coming. it’s intentionally done there too. mike is goofier, more outgoing, more immature in general in that fic in the small bits he’s in & that’s all a response to his familial life. )
culture + friendships
after you answer those questions, important follow up questions are:
-are the losers his first set of friends?
-how much social exposure has he had?
-has he dated? who is he attracted to?
-who influences him? (celebrities, family, culturally)
-what are his cultural interests? what does he do in his free time? how would that impact how he interacts with the rest of the world?
again, no wrong way to answer these. i’ve seen a super broad spectrum of indirect answers to these questions. even thinking about where he might pick up patterns of speech can make him feel much more like a realized character. i’ve noticed some people dip fully into aave to an extent that doesn’t even seem logical in their character’s current situation & it can really seem like a caricature, but i think to write mike without any sense of aave at all is a little ?? too. just be cognizant of it is my only real advice here. it doesn’t so much matter as long as you don’t forget who mike is which next point
humor & personality
-what do you think he would find (shows, comedians, youtube videos) really funny?
-does he have something he quotes often? something he started saying ironically but never stopped?
man i know i’m all there’s no wrong way to write mike !! in this post but i will say real quick that i think mike is funny and i don’t really respect depictions of him where he’s not. i think this is where the movies really just fucked up. book mike drops some of the funniest lines of the book. and honest to god tip is to write out a scene as you feel the urge too, look away for five minutes, look back and give half of richie’s lines away. (or... dialogue.) this sounds like a joke but it was what i did when i first started writing & tfat
i’d always be like “n the funny part goes... to richie.” and thats a fandom inclination too. nooooo. avoid this trap. it doesn’t even make sense. have u ever been in a friend group where only one person... makes jokes? that’d be genuinely so weird. especially bc if you give the joke away to someone else, you can also build on it. amazing things start happening when u start thinking of the characters in flexible patterns. like for example, i almost always give absurdist humor to stan now. wholesome to ben.
mike’s humor is largely situational to me. solid comedic timing & he’s an observant person. sometimes i read back my own writing & have to change the pov bc richies making jokes about things he would never ever notice to make fun of. mike would. mike genuinely sees all. i think he’s just got one of the most analytical brain of the losers. & i think intelligence is subjective and people are smart in different ways but i think it’s foolish to write him as anything other than incredibly intelligent both academically and emotionally. he’s just a natural observer and pattern notice-er. which brings me to my next mike thing:
love & selflessness
i think the biggest part of mike being harder to flesh into a fully realized person is the fandom tendency to make him kind and nothing else. here’s mike. he’s nice. next. bc the book kind of points out his selflessness in his decisions and it makes itself one of his strongest character traits.
especially bc nice seems to trump him having any other emotions. ...no?
i believe in general, but ESPECIALLY in the case of mike, that kindness is a choice. it’s one i genuinely believe he’d make, over & over again. but a choice he makes. he gets annoyed with his friends being annoying like anyone else would. he gets hurt when he feels left out. he feels tired & anxious & hungry and all those other human things. sometimes he might not let it show outwardly, but there’s a difference between that and not giving him feelings at all.
people are selfish. it’s a defense mechanism. it’s to protect us. it’s not a bad thing. we think of how the world impacts ourselves first. we don’t always act upon those thoughts or voice them, but don’t forget to let mike have them. he doesn’t need to be happy for his friends all the time, or rooting for them or supportive. he should have his own things going on.
also. mike’s not a doormat. yes, he stays in derry. but those were life-death consequences for generations of children. it’s really not comparable to almost any decision mike would make in a pennywise free universe. yes, he made a sacrifice in the book but i don’t think he’d just lay himself down in any given universe to whatever fate wants to hand him. but this is where i end this topic bc i’m actually only barely beginning to get to this topic in my own fic!
it’s hard writing the losers young sometimes bc i do feel relationships are naturally a little unbalanced based on basic maturity levels as young people. sometimes friendships just are unbalanced bc of who people are at that time. everyone involved can still be good people in these relationships. it’s about growing together and learning how to be good friends to each other.
for example, in &tfat: certain losers are always checking in with others. others are really wrapped up in their own shit and don’t really notice what bothers the others. it would probably take a chart the size of a textbook to explain how i think this dynamic wholly pans out in full. and yeah, i think it grates on mike a little bit that he is always the checker and never the checkee.
but even when mike snaps, even when he gets upset, i always write it coming out of him with a lot of love. i genuinely think mike, regardless of experience in that fic, has the deepest understanding of love as its own concept and an understand of how exactly it rules his life and and his relationships. mike knows to feel strongly about something he has to care about it. there are lots of things he just doesn’t care about. in the book it’s stated he’s difficult to connect with as an adult. he’s distant. he’s focused on what he wants to focus on. i think mike is actually the most interesting when he becomes a little bit of a disaster man with very little time for what doesn’t interest him.
which last thing, dislikes & disinterests
-what annoys him?
-what makes him genuinely angry?
-what bores him to tears?
i always make jokes that i bring up the nastier parts of the losers bc i love nasty boys but thinking of things people don’t like is as much a part of them as the things they do.
for example, in &tfat, i write richie as making fun of “nerdy” things like anything you could find at comic con. i write bev as not giving a fuck about sports. bill doesn’t care about richie’s music tastes. eddie hates getting condescended to.
bc of the ... kind thing, mike’s one of the harder losers to do this with. i genuinely think mike would listen to any of his friends tell him about anything. & he knows, in return, they can’t say shit when he wants to ramble about history. but dislikes can also be super situational.
again, for example in & tfat: mike doesn’t like when his friends talk about college right now. no one is really being sensitive to him at all. he hates getting blamed for stuff that isn’t his fault, mostly bc it keeps happening.
anyway. i based a lot of my mike (mostly sense of humor and personality) off of a mix of real life friends of mine. it’s a luxury. i know. i’ve been blessed to have friends from literally all walks of life & for me borrowing little habits & quirks & sayings & jokes to slip into my fics and characters is my way of writing one massive love letter to those ive known. i hope i’ve helped you in some way anon. n if not.... don’t be sad i’m hardly one to take writing advice from anyway jandjxjx
overall, as i used to do often, i’d genuinely stop myself and say: is this a person, or a convenience for the plot? and if it was the latter, sigh, and get my backspace key ready.

i dont have any specific questions but id really love to hear any thoughts on It that youd like to share!!!
okay so i have a big note in my phone of all the things i thought to point out or write down from the most recent time I read the book (the past month or so) because the time I read it before this one I annotated the whole thing and I was just gonna chillax with this time but I realized I was still finding new things that I even didn't find when I annotated it and I wanted to remember them so yeah a lot of it isn't coherent bc I figured I'd be the only one to ever see it and I'm not gonna transcribe it so enjoy what makes sense
I think the first chapter is told by Georgie. at the very beginning of the chapter, the pronoun "I" is used for the first time, "so far as I know" and then again at the end of the chapter, for the LAST time in the book, "I do not know where [the boat] finally fetched up", where the rest of the book doesn't once use this first person kind of syntax. the entire book as I've analyzed before uses third person POV, in which it is third person but not limited to one character, following the emotions/thoughts/etc of several different characters at different points. the first chapter is the first, last, the ONLY chapter that takes the third person point of view of Georgie, as he dies so we do not see from him again. since this chapter is the only one we see as Georgie's point of view, and it's the only chapter that uses I as a pronoun, making it first person, it's not really third person, but more of Georgie's first chronological look back on the beginning of the story, starting with his first experience of the events of It. it's even further proven to be less of an omniscient narrator than that of an unknowing one, such as Georgie, when the story begins saying "The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years—if it ever did end—began, so far as I know or can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain.". This quote contradicts everything we know and come to find out through the course of the story, which is that It has been an ever present being in Derry since the beginning of time. It did not begin in 1957, like this narrator believes, which makes it clear that this is not the same narrator we read from for the rest of the book. So all in all I think this is some spiritual version of Georgie, any amount of years after the story, perhaps 27 years, perhaps a hundred, telling what he knows to us, the reader.
WHAT IF ITS MATURIN MORE ON THAT LATER
"Arms can be symbols of strength and power. We use our arms to carry and lift and move things, but we also use them to protect ourselves and others. “Arms” may also be used to refer to weapons that attack, or as “armour” to defend."
eddie lost his arm protecting the others

"'The victim was a gay and rather childlike man name Adrian Mellon. He had a bad case of asthma.'
Eddie's hand stole out and touched the side of his aspirator." (see page 507)
I need not cite anywhere that Eddie is asthmatic, this is common knowledge. But if we go back a few pages, specifically page 493;
"[Eddie's] face was prematurely lined (although in his movements he seemed somehow younger than either Richie or Ben),"
What do these descriptions of Adrian and Eddie have in common? Descriptive of how they are childlike, compared to those around them, and that they are both asthmatic. Not shown above but also common knowledge to anyone who's read the book, they both have other parallels including their death (killed by pennwise/It in which one of their arms is torn off) as well as the fact that the only use of the phrase "my love" is from Don to Adrian and Richie to Eddie.
I know we all know their deaths and the fact that they're asthmatic sets up parallels between them, but I really wanted to acknowledge the fact that within just 14 pages of each other, Eddie and Adrian are BOTH labeled as childlike (in Eddie's case, at least in comparison to those around him) which I think is VERY purposeful. This makes Adrian's only significant trait not explicitly mentioned about Eddie, that he's GAY. Therefore, heavily implying Eddie is as well.
jesus christ
so you're telling me. when Eddie goes down the street Greta and the Tracker Brothers both live on when the seven split up after the chinese food meet up, that he reminisces both on Belch and Greta, two people who bullied him, looking back on when they would play a sport (Greta croquet in her backyard, and Belch baseball in the tracker Brothers field), and then sees Belch as the leper offer him a blowjob? like the original leper? and so you're telling me, a little after that he sees It taunt him again as Greta but in a non sexual way? so basically you're telling me, Eddie sees It as Belch and Greta back to back, who both serve essentially the same character type, paralleling themselves in Eddie's point of view, only difference being their gender, and you're telling me, It chooses to taunt him as the leper offering a blowjob in BELCH'S form? not Greta's? you're telling me all that? that It sexually taunted him as a boy instead of a girl? so basically you're telling me Eddie is gay and It knows it

check page 959 of annotated copy
ok i think the fact that henry deliberately chose Eddie first to kill is absolutely foreshadowing his being the next death of the losers club, he could have gone to the closest one being Richie on floor two but he for some reason chose the one furthest up? ok worm

I have SO much to say about the new chapter of Angels in Outfields! First of all, I LOVE the way you write Stan! Sometimes I think people forget that in canon Stan is just as much of an idiot as the rest of them, but you nailed it! Also! Frankly reading this has transported me back to my high school days, you’ve really captured that busy teenage lyfe. Last but not least! Eddie! Dude! You’re killing me! That one threw me for a loop, I can’t wait to see how this resolves itself! ✨
Yo you can say anything and everything to me I want to know all of your thoughts.
First of all... thank you! I love Stan, he’s a big idiot in the books. He has a sense of humor and it matches up pretty well with Richie’s tbh. Stan is just more esoteric than Richie, and Richie is more loud and obnoxious than Stan. I don’t want to reduce his character to only anxiety. I’ve built him an entire backstory and personality, the same as I’ve done with Richie/Eddie/Bev/Mike/Bill/Ben/and now even Jake.
Fuck man being a high schooler was hell but also (and here me out) fucking lit as shit sometimes. I went to a very horrific high school that was basically a violent prison but I look back on it with semi fond memories of theater and softball and the music department, which are basically the only things I’m going to highlight about high school in this fic. So basically I’m throwing my own memories and experiences and personal generalizations into this fic and onto the characters. It makes me so insanely happy that you think I captured it bc high school for me was a long time ago lmao
And yes! Eddie! I will not give anything away about Eddie or his character right now. I’m keeping him under a tight key right now bc this fic is not from his POV and things will be revealed and understood as the story moves on. But he has his reasons for acting the way he does and some of it will be revealed (in some ways) soon. Things are... going to pick up from here on out. But remember, there are still almost 20 chapters left to this story, so anything can happen.
ANYWAY THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN AMAZING ASK???? AHHH????? People never send me asks about fics (unless they’re mad lmao) so to wake up and see this was AMAZING.

+okay uh. legit thoughts on IT Chapter 2 under the cut, from the perspective of someone who read the book back in junior high. aka when I was 14 or 15, so like... quite a few years ago??
yeah. spoilers obvi
Mike still feels underutilized as a character as continuing from the previous movie and their changing of his backstory. They clearly tried to fix it this time around, but it’s still... not great when both movies pass and I feel like I know absolutely zilch about Mike as a character. You know him a lot more in the book and that’s saying something because of Stephen King’s thing when it comes to writing black characters. Definitely my biggest criticism of both films.
Bowers was... there, I guess?? He didn’t really do much. In retrospect, though, if the events of the adult half of the book also took place in 1-2 days and it was spread out across that big ol’ door stopper, I can see why it seemed like he generally did more then.
Speaking of characters that existed but that’s it: Audra and Tom. Both of their subplots are basically cut. For Tom, that’s fine by me because he’s an abusive prick, but watching him get his comeuppance via Pennywise could’ve been fun. Ah well.
Audra, though... truly a shame bc I admired how proactive she was in the book, from what I remember of her. She was just kind of there for a scene in the movie and never even mentioned again.
The “Richie is queer” thing was spoiled for me by that hilarious article but I’m still kinda surprised they went there. My teenage self, who shipped Richie/Eddie and thought that there was definitely sooooomething going on, feels very vindicated right now.
“Angel of the Morning” had me losing it in theater. 10/10
The part with the Turtle was cut and like... man I couldn’t understand what was happening when I read the book so fine by me.
Stan’s motives for suicide changing this time around... mixed thoughts. There’s something about it I can’t place. idk. Maybe it’s related to Mike and how Stan is more developed than him when Mike survives to the end and Stan doesn’t, but idk.
Also something that bugs me about their additional visions of seeing Pennywise as kids. On a meta level, I understand - you want to use the child actors again, and you can’t just rehash the scenes from the previous film, but still. There’s... something.
So Benny, you were really in love with Bev through 27 years of not seeing her huh??? I shipped it more in the book. I’ll just pin this one on Derry Weirdness I guess.
Richie is still my trash-mouthed favorite. I love him and his humor, I feel like he’s a realistic depiction of the comic relief in a horror scenario like that.
Bill unexpectedly became a fave in this movie and that’s smth bc I didn’t care much about him in the book. But I relate to the whole “older sibling who witnessed something terrible happen to a sibling and blames themselves for it” thing, so that could be why.
That kiss between Bev and Bill really just never got brought up again huh?? At least they didn’t bang like in the book.
Speaking of book banging, thank goodness there was no sewer sex scene. Thank you, producers. I’m glad y’all cut that.
Pennywise’s second murder was both sad and appreciated from a book POV. I felt like with Georgie’s death in Chapter 1, they made him terrifying but at the expense of what made him such an effective killer to children; i.e., he wasn’t charming to Georgie so much as setting off alarms from the start. The book, it’s vice versa - he looks charming and funny! He lures in young children with the promises of fun and games, and they trust him and want to get close. They bring that side back in this movie, so nice saving throw.
Was there ever a Mrs. Kersh?? I don’t think I thought about it much with the book but I do wonder now.
Adult!Bev is a much sadder person than she was in Chapter 1. Disappointing because of how much I liked that fearless self back then, but... eh, she was married to Tom for an indeterminate amount of time. I guess marrying someone like your awful father would do that to you. Still, though.
Finally a mention of “it’s vulnerable to whatever you think it’s vulnerable to” like in the book. They didn’t do that route at all in Chapter 1 which sucks. I’m guessing that’s part of why they cut the Turtle.
Less frightening than Chapter 1 was. I didn’t exactly count but I feel like there was more personal scares for each Loser in Chapter 2, but it’s a moot point bc you know that they all (with the exception of Stan) make it to the end. The actual murders committed by Pennywise are much tamer in comparison to Chapter 1.
Pennywise wasn’t pregnant in this version and honestly... good. Let Derry have a happy ending and let It be dead.
Adrien won my heart and then died three minutes later. I knew it was coming but still :(
tbh I’m sure there’s more but like. I’m tired lol I gotta work tomorrow

Could you describe Stan a little for me? I keep hearing everyone saying he's so much more of a complex character, but the more that I can only pick up is that (adorable) peculiar sense of humor. If you have the time, please and thank you jay☺️
Me, clapping: I. LOVE. STAN. URIS. HERE’S. WHY.
No people are right because stan is complicated and actuallybecoming my favorite of the gang to write which is hilarious to me because atthe beginning when I was planning &tfat I literally said to myself “whatthe hell do I do with stan” bc when I reread IT the first time I was MUCH morehyperfocused on the adult plot which… you know.
I was stress-t trying to figure out his plot in that fic bc Iwas worried if I didn’t give him enough business I would get hate for anti-Semitismafjdslk;kdlsjand now I could write chapters about stan doing absolutely nothing because themore I think about him the more I’m literally in love with him.
I think part of why I’m so emotionally dedicated to stanpatbecause the only description of him as an adult is through the completelyin-love gaze of his wife which MOM AND DAD. Which like, narratively thatchapter, to me, is set up so you understand just how happy and in love they areso that when the end of that chapter hits you you as a reader have to say “whaton earth would make a guy with a life like that end it-“ and get scareder? Which.Fuck man.
But when I started rereading the kid bits I was like “this perfectbeautiful business child who I raised? my actual son?”
Stan is a logical person. At the same time, when he’s comingto understand the world around him I think he’s very much a perceiver and not ajudger… but a hard perceiver like if there’s an opposite of rose-tinted lenseshe’d have them. He has hard-core reality glasses. In all three canons, which isinteresting. He literally saw that painting come alive in the movie and he waslike “that logically cannot have happened so it didn’t. that’s not. Real.” And sortof the same in the book? Which. For a 13 year old that’s something, but for an11 year old, that’s ASTOUNDING.
But add to that in the book even as an 11 year old herepeatedly goes out of his way to make the world around him better. You mighthave heard that he leads the charge to clean bev’s bathroom but it’s hard tosum it up without just reading that section. He’s so sweet to her and reallydoes it so she knows she’s not alone, and pays for the laundry. He’s a kid butwith a logical mind and a heart of actual gold and you’re :’D. described in the book and is actually the world’s smallest adult. especially bc he was only like 5′ 7″ canonically. actually small dad.
And then there’s his active personality, which is somewhat reclusive. You get the feeling this kids keeps to himself, he’s a boy scout, he likesnature and he likes to be alone. he likes to be control of his emotions. But he’sliterally eleven. He can’t always do that.
His thing with control is interesting, because his OCD to meisn’t like. Dirt and stuff, for the most part (only if it were let be andbecame extremely aggravated) it’s actually just about how much control he has overhis surroundings. that was the thing that really bothered him about IT, being dirty and not knowing where he was - having no control over what was going on.
and EVEN when he emotionally breaks down from the stress (AND HE’S 11) he literally is sobbing and telling everyone he’s fine. partially because he knows he’s physically fine and partially bc he probably didn’t want their help to even him out. i think he’s a person who has to cope things himself, like if he’s in his feelings he’ll deal with it alone.
& then ALL of that and he’s still genuinely prettyhumble. even in my stories, esp. if we’re in eddie’s pov, can be described asarrogant or smug. But actually looking at it thru my POV and not eddies, stan tome is 100% one of those guys who’s so completely aware of his flaws… andeveryone else’s. actual “i’m garbage but so is everyone else” meme. patty says when he applied for his first job out of college he never thought he’d get it. my son.
and then there’s also his like friendly-personality in the book. he’s literally. goofy. like i imagine once you get to know him he’s just. silly. i have him throwing out random references and completely bizarre facts and humor. it’s funny, bc a lot of posts have richie being like ajkdsl;fjL; XD RANDOM THING and stan being like No. but in the book stan throws out something completely strange and richie’s like “what.” and in his narration he says “stan didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor and the one he did have was strange.” (i think richie is much more situationally gifted with comedy i don’t think he’d be either random or really chaotic with his humor. but that’s tea for another time.) and he’s genuinely nice to the new kids and people he comes across. wheras, again for example, richie is rude to random kids for literally no reason sfadkj;lds (that kid ended up being an asshole anyway but still) {richie is super nice to others tho. he just likes who he likes.} i don’t think he’s particularly outgoing. but he’s nice. and comforting to be around. and sees you exactly as you are, and doesn’t judge you for that. i love HIM

Hi!! I love your writing first of all and on pointe literally makes me so excited when ever I get the notification hehehe anywaaaay. I’ve been really living for the stan bev richie brotp recently and i was just wondering what your thoughts are on them
wow. i can fUcking RAMBLE!! this is going under a cut i guess bc jeez?
ugh bffs!!! honestly though... unfortunately op! is strictly in eddie’s pov so we won’t hear much of their friendship in that verse. my real //outlet// for loser friendships is &tfat bc everyone has plots going and gets the main pov at some point in time.
and tbh... a Good Friendship.
there are just so many ?? good friendship possibilities within the loser’s club. once upon a time i was having a conversation with @eddiekasbprak about my ?lowkey? (omg exposing myself here) frustrations with the popularity of even platonic stozier bc like... i love bill and richie so much in the book. it is probably my favorite dynamic in the book. {and this is sort of irrelevant to the question but i really cannot find evidence of the whole ‘stan and richie have been friends for the longest’ claim and although i LOVE their friendship, i view it differently than i think ? a lot of people.} and her response was basically the epitome of “richie has two hands” and i was all (like the roommates vine) “oh my god... richie has two hands.”
of course every single member of the loser’s club can’t be holding hands with every other member that would be gross and a fucking mess of hands But that conversation was literally a turning point in how i started seeing loser friendships.
so i really refrain from language about how like “so and so is richie’s BEST friend” or etc etc bc like. richie got two hands but an infinite amount of love in hims heart?
i Love writing stan as a silent communicator. he does it with richie, bev and bill at one point in time in &tfat. i love writing stan as someone who doesn’t really tolerate bullshit. stan can literally tell richie with a look that what ever persona he’s put on in the moment is annoying him and richie will knock it tf off? stan is an Honest man and no one appreciates it more than beverly marsh? bev and stan can talk for hours about anything and know they’re being genuine with each other?
i think bev is simultaneously so ?masculine? in her energy but never hesitates to be kind and compassionate towards others. richie is by far the most calm in her presence and its because of how she is. she is full!! of love!! stan talks to bev because he knows she listens? everyone listens, but bev really gives her full self to you in her presence. her heart is so ? open ? for you and what you have to say, even if she doesn’t instantly agree.
if it’s just the three of them, richie doesn’t really feel the need to do the voices? they annoy stan and beverly prefers just richie. it’s not that richie never feels judged in their presence. it’s more so that if richie ever feels judged he knows he deserves it. richie still doesn’t like to talk about his feelings, but he comes the closest in their presence. and they ? notice things about him. if he’s piling too much on his shoulders, stan can tell. stan will never ask him what’s wrong directly, but he’ll ask him to just hang out, or something.
stan/beverly/richie is all long talks after your run out of weed (which stan doesn’t smoke but he’ll sit there anyway) where you say things you would worry would sound dumb at any other time {aliens, afterlife, fate, you name it} it’s waking up at different times after sleep-overs and the silence being totally comfortable while you wait for the others to get ready for the day, knowing you’ll come back together when they’re done. it’s watching drag race together weekly and taking some of the week’s frustration out on a heated argument about wigs because you know it’s not a real fight. it’s not needing specific plans to hang out together bc most of the time you don’t even do them bc you’re talking too much?
i love them!!!
