My great Buffy the Vampire Slayer watch adventure has come to an end! Last night I watched the s7 finale.
I'll start my series of posts reflecting back on this iconic show with my general thoughts on s7 and where it ranks among all the other seasons.
Season 7 is a very odd beast. I don't have any major gripes with the major big bad of the series finale, although I can understand people wanting something more epic and memorable, something that Buffy could have encountered and fought physically.
My big issue with s7 is the baffling absence of character arcs for all the major players, perhaps with the exception of Spike, but since that arc was all about undoing the terrible creative decision that was Seeing Red, this was not much of a consolation. Also, on many occasions, s7 betrays established character portrayals in a way that is difficult to understand and forgive. (some examples are, Dawn kicking Buffy out of their home, Buffy and Xander using chloroform on Dawn, Buffy's general coldness not mitigated by moments humanizing her, Buffy and Angel ridiculous smooching, everyone ganging up on Buffy in Empty Places, various backstabbing between the characters that felt very off putting so close to the end of the entire series, and more)
Adding to the disappointment is the simple fact that as a viewer, I just wanted a beloved series to go out on a high note, and that just didn't happen here. There are too many baffling creative decisions and writing that feels ripped right out of ATS, contrived drama for shock value, to make this season feel good. Also, this season has made me reevaluate my previously least favorite seasons like 1 and 4. And I have to say that for all their flaws, s1 and s4 at least do justice to the characters. s1 does a very good job establishing their personalities. s4 has strong character arcs for all of the cast, regardless of my feelings towards Buffy and Riley.
Here then are my final season rankings, adjusted after watching s7:
s5 > s3 > s6 > s2 > s1 > s4 > s7
Season 5 for me is peak btvs. I don't think it's such a controversial opinion.
My next post will probably focus on the main characters, their arcs, s7 development - or lack of it, and my opinion of whether they should have survived the final battle.

UO-i dont like faith that much. i like her vibe and watching her onscreen in s3 but i think a lot of the stuff she did (like raping buffy/riley, sexually assaulting xander) got excused so i never found her redemption earned which made me dislike her in s7. also ik willow is a generally beloved/iconic character but a lot of people hate her now and i don't get why. people seem to think that joss used her as his fetishy cute nerdy girl character but i never found her uncomfortable in that way? idk
i agree about faith, every time i watch btvs i'm like, oh great, here's faith. in terms of willow, i mean high school is the character i relate to this most and i love high school willow, i think as the seasons go on she gets blander and loses her quirk, i don't think her relationship with tara is particularly well-written, i don't think tara is well-written and i mean joss was so proud about having the longest onscreen same sex kiss at the time but we don't see it, we see it from xander's pov, now there are some things that i do take into context of tv at the time, like yes i think willow should be bi but joss had spoken about that and i can see it:
This isn’t to defend the decision because her bi-erasure does really irritate me but yeah representation was pretty fucking dismal at the time (I mean it’s not the best now either) and Willow and Tara’s relationship was the first wlw relationship, like longterm, on American television I believe so it was already being groundbreaking that way, and Joss said that viewers/society would not have been able to handle it if he wrote Willow as bi

A good way to look at it is one of the rare gems from a The Boys episode
so like i think it's reductive to say that willow uses her as a cute nerdy girl fetish but he makes some choices in the later seasons that i'm like, you could've done workarounds much better.

1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?
From the moment they first had their one night stand. It was funny because I never thought about the idea of them being together until I watched that episode. I just knew that something about Robin and Ted felt wrong to me.. But once Barney and Robin happened I was like "holy shit they're perfect together" and the rest is history.
2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2?
Not yet actually! Catradora is still a new ship for me and I'm still just squealing over their canon relationship. But I'll be for sure searching for good fics of them soon.
3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver?
I have a Villaneve tumblr icon right now lol
4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?
I would cry a thousand tears lol. And that's partly why I'm ignoring the LiS comics. In the end of my version of canon Max and Chloe drove out of Arcadia Bay and eventually found peace and happiness together.
5. Why is 1 so important?
Ian and Mickey are soulmates in the truest sense of the word. They have traumatic but strong history and understand each other better than anyone else. They can't stay away from each other and neither of them really want to. To most people they are both seen as deeply flawed but they both look past those outside perceptions and love each other for who they are. It is truly a joke that the Shameless writers ever thought they could be replaced. But all is right in the end. They're married.
6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?
Oof definitely serious
7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?
Honestly probably Ian and Mickey
9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom?
I've only watched the first season of Euphoria once. But I do re-watch Rue/Jules scenes once in a while. I miss them.
10. Which ship has lasted the longest?
Um...Ian and Mickey have been a ship since S1 on a 10 season show lol. But in-universe it would probably be Peeta/Katniss since they're married and have kids.
11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?
I believe they've had two major breakups? But I pretend the second doesn't exist :)
12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?
Catra/Adora vs Max/Anne. Hmmm....I think I'm gonna say Catra/Adora since they're both physical fighters and Adora is She-Ra. But Anne is a good fighter and would put up a good fight in protecting herself and Max.
13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
Nope. They both hid their feelings for each other for a time though
14. Is 4 still together?
That's complicated lol. They've never been an actual couple but as of the S3 finale, they weren't separated from each other like in previous seasons.
15. Is 10 canon?
I don't consider them as having been in an actual relationship yet but yes they canonically have feelings for each other and kissed more than once.
16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
It would probably come down between Catra/Adora, Zuko/Katara, and Eve/Villanelle. Catradora and Zutara both have supernatural powers but Villanelle is a trained killer and unlike everyone else, probably wouldn't hold back on killing anyone.
17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?
President Snow and the Capitol. Specifically in Mockingjay when they hijacked Peeta.
18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?
All of them but Zutara, Gallavich, and Rules tend to have the most unfair shit thrown at them.
19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?
Oh yes. Every once in a while I do a long dive into the Zutara tag.
20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink?
Probably Zuko/Katara since they were never canon in the first place. And I'm okay with that.

Who is your favorite character in 2? dawn foreva! knew it from when i was liddol watching btvs, maybe bc i, too, am i whiny brat bby? which she’s not even, the girl is Miss Unda Stood. she’s dealt w the death of her mother, her sister, and the concept that she used to be a floaty orby incorporeal “weapon” and has only been alive for like 5 years ok give her a break.
Who is your least favorite character in 1? dawson “doodoo crybaby” leery. jvdb honestly did the best he could, it’s not his fault he was standing next to pacey.
What is your favorite episode of 4? prob predictable to say the one where no one’s ready but!! secretly my actual fave is the one where everybody finds out.
What is your favorite season of 5? ooooooh GOD i wanna say s3 but s5 is def my most rewatched. bad blood is just. iconic.
Who is your favorite couple in 3? michael/maria no question! if michael/liz had been an actual couple i might need to really consider, but they remain my au fave!
Who is your favorite couple in 2? soooooooo riley and buffy *adrienne maloof vc* and let me tell you why. riley had his problems, he was very macho, gender norm-y, sensitive male ego-ish esp when he was in the military, don’t get me wrong. he also didn’t handle his “unrequited” feelings toward buffy that well (him being blood bag is a fascinating moment for his character that i rly need to get into one of these days), but he genuinely loved buffy and imo he was the best one for her. he’s human, he’s a demon fighter, he’s a rly good man! he def has the capacity to be dynamic and get on her level, if she’d allowed him. they could have been GREAT and that’s that on that.
What is your favorite episode of 1? the all-nighter might actually be one of my most watched? pacey getting his shine time is just :’) the best. the halloween episodes are classics, still get chills when they realize who joey was talking to. ALSO every pj-centric episode just all of them, stolen kisses, winter’s tale, castaways everything.
What is your favorite episode of 5? oh maybe actually bad blood. first of all luke wilson. the premise is just so perfect for their dynamic and is so fun to watch idk. also whichever one they kiss in, love it.
What is your favorite season of 2? five tbh! best baddie, some of the best episodes of the entire series (looking at you, the body), just the most dynamic season for btvs.
How long have you watched 1? lol forever. probably since i was like 10.
How did you become interested in 3? tbh i think it was literally just rec’d to me on netflix and i was like ok sure whatever. boy did netflix have my number.
Who is your favorite actor in 4? actor ooooo ig matthew perry. just a great comedian.
Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? shiiiit. prob btvs, but i think if the dawson’s creek fandom was bigger it’d be a very tough call.
Which show have you seen more episodes of - 1 or 3? dawson’s creek, but it’s really close i’ve seen both of them a bunch but i owned dc so!
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? rachel mf greeen you already know.
Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? omg. lemme just say no.
Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? they all dated each other already it’s difficult. oh wait duh joey and jen!!! tell me that tension wasn’t even a lil bit sexual.
Overall, which show has a better storyline, 3 or 5? wow close call. between roswell and the x files...... objectively it has to be roswell, right? like it’s ABOUT the aliens rather than someone trying to find them. execution/writing wise, x files obviously wins tho.
Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? btvs theme was sick as hell.
