this isn't going to work (Angstpril 2024, #6)
"…This isn't gonna work."
Able looks up from the crystal he's examining, glancing over the microscope's interface. Cyrus looks…. tired. Like it's been a few cycles since he's had a decent amount of sleep, sure, but more than that. Like he's spent every moment of that sleeplessness pacing the length of this still-unfinished workshop, trying to outrun whatever it is that he can't quite shake.
Very well may have -- last night, at least.
"What isn't? These crystals? They might. Structure looks right, so as long as they've got the filtering capacity…"
"No. Not really what I meant." Cyrus swivels back and forth in the drafting chair for a while. Able knows that look; far-off, but focused, trying to pin down thoughts that stay just out of reach. "In the long run. Concentration's just a stopgap, but Tron's energy processing isn't gonna go back to normal, is it? No matter what we do, nothing's gonna be enough to fix him."
He sounds resigned to it. Means he's been thinking about this for a while, sitting with it and trying to process it on his own. Able's accepted that he'll never get the kid to be upfront with him, and maybe it's just as well -- it's not up to him to decide what role he takes on, after all.
But that doesn't mean it hurts any less to watch.
"I don't know," Able says softly. "I guess we'll just have to keep trying."

hiya foone! i'm working on the surprisingly lofty task of modding barbie fashion show 2004 and i've been told twice to ask if you have any leads on how to get to the game files. i don't know how to simplify it because i'm so in over my head at this point. here is the thread
okay so here's how you reverse engineer an arbitrary game, the quick version:
Research. Who made the game? what else did they make? Maybe they made a game with the same engine, and someone already figured out that one? (not that I saw on a quick look, but you may be able to dig deeper) Also, look in the game files. There's a PowerRender.dll and a sipEngine.bc file. Nothing for sipEngine, but PowerRender has a hit on the internet archive, maybe that download includes some info on how it encodes files?
Look at the files (with a hex editor, like HxD). KAR files seem to be the main storage mechanism, and they've got a RIFF header. RIFF is a standard, though they're not using it exactly. But this might help. Another thing you can spot in the KAR files is a bunch of english strings (CreditsTb.kar is lousy with them). That's a good sign: it means the files aren't compressed, so you don't have to figure out the compression method.
Static analysis of the EXE. Get Ghidra and load up the EXE. Find where it opens files (CreateFileA/CreateFileW on windows), trace back from there. Check the strings. Hey look, function FUN_004e6260 is called with "KAResource.kar". so FUN_004e6260 is probably a function to load arbitrary resource files. Dig through that, figure out how it works.
Dynamic analysis of the EXE. Stick it in a debugger and see what it does. Set a breakpoint on CreateFileA/W and follow the execution. I don't have a good recommendation for what tool to use here, I'm from the past. I've used Ollydbg a lot but it hasn't been updated in 9 years.
Hijack the EXE and make it do your work for you. One thing I noticed while looking around was references to Python. This game apparently embeds a python interpreter, version 2.2. Maybe you can find where it loads the code from, or inject your own code?
Anyway those are some introductory ideas. feel free to ask any follow-up questions, but this hopefully gives you some idea of where to start?
Good luck!

unexpected upside to the archival project: father-???? bonding over working out coding errors...???
additional stuff: me forcibly teaching myself how to understand coding stuff. lemme tell you learning to understand what a json or a breakpoint
strings?? arrays??? lots of words going over my head trying to explain what was happening with the code but we managed it eventually

Day 210,
Morning thought: Cass will be in town today.  I should not be dreading that as much as I am.
*******
Well, we didn’t have that conversation, but I did tell Cass about the catacombs.  As expected, she was angry at having been left out and kept in the dark, and I didn’t blame her.  I don’t care to recount the specifics save to say that it took a while, but we worked through it and she shifted to bombarding me with questions trying to extract every possible detail from my memory, both the translated chanting and the open sarcophagus.  Interwoven with those lines of questioning were threads of ideas for other things to try.  Opening the sarcophagus again to see if the shade came back.  Copying down the symbols from inside the sarcophagus and seeing if we can write them on something else to trap a shade.  Or keep them away.  I drew the line at the suggestion that I try sleeping down in the catacomb on a mist night.
In an attempt to redirect and channel some of that enthusiasm I suggested we do that thorough examination comparing the chant transcriptions we’d been meaning to.  For a few hours anyway, then we’d need to get ready for tonight’s telling.
Of course, Cass jumped straight to examining the period between Maiko and I going downstairs and our return.  I made a point of complimenting her good archival work in annotating that.  It was a genuine compliment, but I’d be lying if there wasn’t some preemptive guilt contributing to my verbalizing it instead of just thinking it.
After another round of questioning me about how fast I was going down the stairs and at what point I had my vision she narrowed down what she claimed to be an excerpt containing the translated portion somewhere within.  She even tried reading it aloud to see if that triggered anything for me, but it all still sounded like gibberish to me.
As before, working too long on denotation-less strings of phonetic symbols still gives me headaches, but while I was taking my breaks from that, Cass kept going.  When I returned to find her rapidly flipping back and forth between several pages she had bookmarked I asked the obvious question of whether she’d found something interesting.  Of course, she had.  Not so much a pattern, but a break in one.  While we’d not seen any full looping segments yet, we had identified a few words or phrases that, whenever they showed up, were always followed by another specific word or phrase.  She’d found one of these phrases that seemed to be missing its second half.  Excited, I joined her and confirmed what she was seeing.  Even cross-referenced it with Lin and Vernon’s transcriptions.
We spent longer than we meant to on examining the preceding and following passages around that breakpoint (which Cass claimed had been seamless enough not to notice while listening, especially after having been at it for hours), but eventually we figured out the other thing that had been bothering Cass about that segment.  We figured we’d missed it at the time due to not comparing the notes before and after our rainless lunch break combined with fatigue from hours of listening to gibberish and writing it down, but somewhere around the time we started going back downstairs and putting hands on top of sarcophagi to listen to them, we starting finding repeated segments from around the time we’d first arrived that day.  The implication being that there is a looping nature to the chants, but it’s hours long and opening the sarcophagus may have caused the loop to restart from the beginning prematurely.
A potential discovery worth the price of once again not having the proper time to practice and prepare for the telling.  We wound up sort of winging it once again.  We had fun though, both the telling and the research.
If only it could always be like that.

there is an frustrating interaction of reading with my time-blindness from adhd though, in that a lot of the cues i use to manually 'progress' time are things i don't habitually do while reading, because it takes way more reading before either my brain gets tired or i have a bodily cue that i need to do something else. whereas things like videogames and art i naturally take a break somewhere from every 30 minutes to an hour because they're more actively engaging in both brain and body. (either my brain needs a break from doing something intense or fast paced, or my hands need a break from the action) and for videogames and art a lot of the breakpoints are really consistent, like the end of a level in a game or finishing a specific segment or step in any kind of art
anything designed to be serialized is even worse, because then the traditional breakpoints in a story are loaded up with extra tension and intrigue. i don't even Perceive the changes in chapters or issues in webcomics and manga when i'm reading through a completed archive because they're paced to make you as excited as possible to see what comes next for the people who see things page by page or issue by issue

Alright, It's time I start actually throwing my own voice into the void. I just posted chapter 5 of my fic Breakpoints. It takes place 5 years after splatoon 2, and involves some new blood the NSS brings in to keep things under wraps while everyone else is getting to busy to help. It's 100% OC injection into the story, and I'm having a blast writing it. Check it out if you'd like, I plan to write on it for a good while.
Also the next chapter is one I really really like, so expect that soon.

frozen (Angstpril 2024, #2)
"What do you think his render's gonna be like, when he gets here?"
"Not sure. But he didn't seem too worried about it. And he can always change it again, if he's not happy with it." Demeter looks up from her datapad for a tick, a sharp frown creasing her brow. "Relax, Yori. Pacing a track into the floor won't get him here any faster."
"He wasn't worried about it because he didn't think the System was gonna recompile him." It comes out sharper than Yori should really be speaking to her sister -- but right now, she's not sure she can help it… or that she cares. "It's gonna take time to fix again, if it's not right. And Siv deserves better than for the first thing he sees in the mirror to be wrong… again."
"I never said he doesn't."
"I know, I know." You did, though, the first time. And you wonder why he doesn't talk to you. "I just… I'm worried about him. He should be here by now, shouldn't he? It's been almost a whole cycle."
Tron wakes up the status screen, and Yori watches the waves of compiler output scroll past, too fast to read, even if she could understand it. Lots of warnings.
"Still going." He follows her gaze, squeezes her hand. "Remember what Flynn said, before he left? Just because it says there are warnings…"
"Yeah. But a whole cascade of them? That doesn't seem good, does it?"
And no indication of progress, either.
"I don't know," he admits. "His code's fairly complex, isn't it? The automated screener could be taking a while."
"Or it could have flagged him." Demeter already seems resigned to it. Faintly disappointed at most, but even that might be a stretch. She's got just as much code in common with him as Yori does, just about -- but it's never seemed to matter. "Flynn never cleaned up his database, right? Still got all those fragments of malicious code kicking around in there."
"No." The idea of it -- of her brother not being here -- is catastrophic. "Siv wouldn't let him. Said the System deserved a chance to learn from what happened to us, what it took to fix... and then he'd let the System decide what to do with him afterward."
"Figures. Did this to himself, then."
Yori knows, of course, that the System doesn't see intent, or sense of purpose, or kindness… just code. Maybe all it sees is that list of malware signatures -- something meant to teach it, but… does it know that?
"Maybe," Yori says tonelessly. "But that doesn't mean he deserves it."
And as if in reply, the compiler's output stops. Freezes in place, the last message a cryptic error. Critical.
Tron steadies her as something in her code drops, dizzy and vertiginous.
::It's okay. Flynn can override it, or fix whatever isn't working.::
::He doesn't want that.::
::It might not be a major issue, Yori. Let's at least let Flynn take a look, okay?::
But she doesn't have an answer for him.
Demeter turns off the screen.
