im watching a retrospective about Majora's Masks dungeon progression and realizing a little more every time he says "this game took a lot of very brave steps out to not be ocarina of time" that my disappointment with totk isn't out of place. I've been told "it's breath of the wild 2, why did you expect it to be different?" but like.. it's it's own game. why is it the exact same but with an arguably worse iteration of the story?

Hades II - Reveal Trailer
Hades II will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store in 2023.
Tumblr media
Key visual
Overview
About
The first-ever sequel from Supergiant Games builds on the best aspects of the original god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler in an all-new, action-packed, endlessly replayable experience rooted in the Underworld of Greek myth and its deep connections to the dawn of witchcraft.
Key Features
Battle Beyond the Underworld – As the immortal Princess of the Underworld, you’ll explore a bigger, deeper mythic world, vanquishing the forces of the Titan of Time with the full might of Olympus behind you, in a sweeping story that continually unfolds through your every setback and accomplishment.
Master Witchcraft and Dark Society – Infuse your legendary weapons of Night with ancient magick, so that none may stand in your way. Become stronger still with powerful Boons from more than a dozen Olympian gods, from Apollo to Zeus. There are nearly limitless ways to build your abilities.
Mingle with (More) Gods, Ghosts, and Monsters – Meet a cast of dozens of fully-voiced, larger-than-life characters, including plenty of new faces and some old friends. Grow closer to them through a variety of new interactions, and experience countless unique story events based on how your journey unfolds.
Every Run is its Own Adventure – New locations, challenges, upgrade systems, and surprises await as you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld again and again. Reveal the mysteries of the Arcana Altar, tame witchy familiars, and gather reagents using Tools of the Unseen to get closer to your goal.
The Perks of Immortality – Thanks to a variety of permanent upgrades and the return of God Mode, you don’t have to be a god yourself to experience what Hades II has to offer. But if you happen to be one, you can brave escalating challenges for greater rewards, and prove just how divine you really are.
Signature Supergiant Style – Rich, atmospheric presentation and storytelling fused with responsive action is the hallmark of Supergiant’s titles. Vivid new hand-painted environments, even smoother real-time 3D characters, and an electrifying original score make this mythic world burst with life.
Coming to Early Access
Getting player feedback through key phases of development was vital for the original Hades, so we plan to reprise that process once more, once this game is further along.

Japanese Video Games and Your Consoles
Hello! This post is for people that want to play video games in Japanese and want to know which consoles play them, so I'll go through the ones I know about, here. (Not going to talk about sailing the high seas here)
I've been mostly a Nintendo nut my whole life, so most of my info is about Nintendo!
Hopefully this helps someone!
Gameboy Color/Advance
Tumblr media
Region Free
The Gameboy, Gameboy color and Gameboy Advance are all completely region free. Your Gameboy models will all play Japanese games just fine.
I recommend:
Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Crystal, Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald
Pokemon card game and the sequel GR団参上
The Legend of Zelda the Minish Cap, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons
--------
Super Nintendo
Tumblr media
Region Locked, simple devices available
The Nintendo and Super Nintendo were both region locked by the cartridges themselves being of a different shape. You can either buy a Super Famicom (The Japanese equivalent) or buy a peripheral to make your Super Nintendo play super Famicom games. It's not too cost prohibitive to buy what's called a "Cartridge converter". Another option is to buy a Retron system that plays them.
I recommend:
Mario RPG
Final Fantasy
Earthbound
--------
N64
Tumblr media
Region locked, easy modification
N64 is region locked based on the shape of the cartridge back. To get your Japanese games to work on yours, switch the back off of the actual cartridge using a 3.8 mm Gamebit screwdriver with the back from any other US cartridge.
I recommend:
Mario Story (Paper Mario)
Mario Party
Pokemon Snap
Legend of Zelda games
--------
Gamecube
Tumblr media
Region locked
Buy a Gamecube capable Japanese Wii.
I recommend:
Pokemon Coliseum
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
All the Mario Parties
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance if you can get it (EXPENSIVE)
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Legend of Zelda Windwaker
Battle Houshin
--------
Wii
Tumblr media
Region locked
I bought a Japanese Wii, but skipped the WiiU in Japanese.
I would recommend:
Captain Rainbow (Japan Exclusive)
Takt of Magic (This one is FUN! It's Japan exclusive and you use your WiiMote to cast spells by drawing shapes)
Earth Seeker (Japan Exclusive)
Legend of Zelda (Skyward Sword)
--------
DS
Tumblr media
Region Free
The DS is completely region free. Any DS game will play on your device.
My recommendations:
Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks (You can hold your stylus on a kanji to read it in Hiragana, but it won't show by default! Awesome!)
Any Pokemon Game (You can choose Kanji or hiragana and switch mid-game)
Ace Attorney series - If you want to struggle but skyrocket your reading level, play Ace Attorney, called 逆転裁判. There are a lot of games and they're mostly great. If you can get ahold of the spin off, 逆転検事, I played through the first one and it was a bit slow, but the second one is not released in the US. I've started it, it's supposed to be good.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days
--------
3DS
Tumblr media
Region locked
Having a Japanese 3DS has been an invaluable tool. If you save up to buy one Japanese version of a console, get this one. However, with the e-shop closed, if you would rather sail the high seas here, this would be... The prime time to do so, but I did not say anything.
Recommended:
Fire Emblem Fates
Fire Emblem Echoes
Pokemon Moon
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Sonic games
Bravely Default (Fully Voice acted)
There is SO MUCH on there
-----
Nintendo Switch
Tumblr media
Region Free
The Nintendo Switch will play any region game you put in it! On top of that, the Japanese language track is available on most Nintendo branded games, so if you have the English version, you might already have the Japanese version!
To buy on the e-shop, make a Japanese Nintendo account. You will need to buy gift cards from a third party site like Playasia to purchase.
Recommended:
Get the online pack, then download the Japanese version of the N64 and Super Nintendo apps! I recommend Paper Mario on the N64 app.
Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom (Has Furigana on all dialogue!)
Mario Odyssey
Princess Peach Showtime
Mario RPG
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pretty much anything you can play on Switch can change to Japanese. (Splatoon not included)
This thing is a learning machine.
-----
PSP
Tumblr media
Region Free
PSP is completely region free!
I have played Birth by Sleep on here in Japanese and it was good.
Recommended:
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
--------
PS1/PS2
Tumblr media
Region Locked
There's a trick to make these region free, but I bought a Japanese Ps2. If you want to unlock your non-Japanese Ps2, you can look into something called Disk Swapping.
My recommendations:
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
I haven't explored much by way of Japanese only Ps2 games yet, but I'm going to be getting Endonesia because it's made by some of the same people that made Moon. Look into Moon, it's an awesome game too.
I am aware that the Japanese only library for this particular console is large.
--------
PS3/PS4 (I do not own PS5)
Tumblr media
Region Free
PS3 and PS4 are region free, and I have heard PS5 is as well.
My collection of Japanese games for these, however, is low so I don't really have any recommended games. Maybe I'll update this later.
To buy on the Japanese PS3 and 4 shop, you will need to make a Japanese playstation account. After this, you will need to use a third party website to buy gift cards, such as PlayAsia, to add money. You should be able to buy and download as long as you have the money in the account.

Random thoughts on Persona 4 Golden:
(for context, I'm up to 6/25, and I just rescued Rise)
Going from Persona 3 Portable to this, it was lowkey kinda jarring to suddenly have full 3D exploration during the real-world segments. The more upbeat vibe compared to the previous entry also took some getting used to, though it's a nice change of pace.
EVERYTHING IS YELLOW.
I like Margaret and her customer service-ass voice.
I thought that Yosuke would be more similar to Junpei in personality (since they both fill the same "best bro" archetype), but they do have a lot more differences than I originally thought. Yosuke is more level-headed and better at thinking of plans (most of the time). Just an observation.
I like Chie! She's annoying, but in a kind of charming way?
When I heard Yukiko, I was like "why does her voice sound familiar" and then I found out she has the same English VA as Magnolia from Bravely Second.
Speaking of Yukiko, she's kinda like if you mixed Mitsuru's rich girl background with Fuuka's cooking skills.
SO many gameplay improvements and quality of life features that weren't in Persona 3. Improved Shuffle Time. Faster animations in battle. More benefits from Social Links. Fusion Search. Ability to select which skills get passed down when fusing Personas. Ability to buy skill cards. Ability to accept more than 3 sidequests at a time. Gaining money from battles without needing Shuffle Time. Costumes are now a separate slot.
The soundtrack continues to go hard, though I guess that's a given with Persona games. Heartbeat-Heartbreak, I'll Face Myself -Battle-, and Reach Out to the Truth are some of my current favorites.
Nanako kinda reminds me of myself when I was her age, mainly because of her habit of singing commercial jingles.
I'm very interested in where Marie's Social Link goes, considering that, IIRC, it wasn't in the original Persona 4: it was a new addition to Golden.
Great vegetables.
I can see why fans call Adachi a boyfailure.
...Okay, after Kanji's dungeon and the summer camp segment, I can see why the story has been criticized. Like, it feels like the writers wanted to explore queer themes, but they were forced to cut them mid-development. Why do I have the sinking feeling that it's not going to get any better in that regard?
Speaking of which, Shadow Kanji was the only boss so far that I got a Game Over against. (Tip: Take out his two helper guys first, they're weak to ice and fire respectively.)
The whole motorcycle flirting scene was even more awkward than the "Operation Babe Hunt" from Persona 3. At least you can skip that scene in Portable if you're playing as the female protagonist.
WHY AM I FIGHTING A STRIPPER (Switch's handheld mode is a godsend for this part)
At first, I hated Teddie, but after fighting his Shadow, I have a good feeling that he's going to get better.
Overall, I'm not really liking the story so far (mainly because of the aforementioned homophobic tones), but gameplay is of the utmost importance, and the gameplay is very fun. After this, I'll probably play Persona 5 Royal during the summer months.

I'm so glad you're back! I was afraid something bad happened and I'm relieved to find out that it wasn't the case. A few months have passed since the release of TOTK, so the hype has went down and now I would like to read your opinion of the game. What are your favorite parts about it, what are the things you disliked and how would you rank this game with the rest of the 3D Zelda games?
Aw, thank you! Yeah, I'm sorry I post so infrequently. I'm hoping that will change once I start working on the Fortitude revision again. Finishing Forgotten has been such an uphill project for me. But I'll be so glad I didn't leave it unfinished.
My thoughts and opinions about TotK are below (emphasis on my opinions--I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and that's ok!).
Three things I enjoyed:
THE MUSIC. The soundtrack is amazing, especially the growing dynamics as you progress in certain areas. It has a psychological effect, and I found it really intense in the best way.
THE TEMPLES. I was very happy to see a return to more traditional Zelda dungeons. WAY more fun than the divine beasts, and I liked having the sages assist! Gave me TWW vibes.
Better NPCs and sidequests. Maybe it's just me, but it felt like the Zelda team put some extra love into creating the NPCs and all the quests that come with them. I've had more fun with them than I did in BotW - which had way too many simple fetch quests.
Three things that didn't do much for me:
The Zonai tech. It's fun to use, and I do appreciate how utterly amazing the development/coding is, especially considering the Switch's hardware limitations. However, I would be very tired of Ultrahand by now if not for the Autobuild ability, and even then my interest is mild at best. Also, it did not feel "Zelda-ish" to me. I don't think driving cars or shooting rockets belongs in a Zelda game. In fact I ignored the Zonai tech whenever possible. I would often walk instead of building a car, simply because it felt more "Zelda-ish" to do so.
Mediocre voice acting. I'm relieved to say Ganondorf was fairly good. The rest not so much. If Nintendo isn't willing to hire more expensive more esteemed VAs for a flagship franchise like Zelda, I'd rather they didn't do it at all.
Zelda's story. Don't get me wrong, I was very glad to see her play a stronger, amazingly brave and selfless character. The thing I'm not happy about is that she was once again separated from Link throughout the entire game. Is it really too much to ask that they work together side by side? *sigh*
Three things I strongly disliked: (warning: ranting ahead)
EMOTIONLESS LINK. I cannot express how much I hate this. Even if I put aside my love for Link as a character and my wish for him to express himself, I still think this blank-faced avatar approach is awful. It does not allow me to see myself as Link (which I believe was their intent) because I have feelings and he doesn't, seemingly. If anything, it had the opposite effect. I found It distracting and cringey and infuriating to watch Link react to everything with determination, confusion, or that stupid blank expression. There are some emotionally charged scenes in this game, and they fall very flat because of Link. At least, they did for me. UGH.
Non-linear storytelling. It's highly restrictive, disjointed, and the impact depends on the order in which players obtain certain cutscenes. Please, Nintendo, no more.
The Zonai. I'm not a fan of most furry character designs, and Rauru is particularly strange, so it was immediately off-putting to me. I also strongly dislike the idea of them founding Hyrule and being "like gods" to Hylians. It's all very vague, and I don't understand how any of it works with past Zelda lore, especially when Hylia is so important in BotW. It's like they scrapped everything sacred in Zelda lore (the golden goddesses, Hylia, etc.), and replaced it with the Zonai. Meh, I'll stick with the old lore, thanks.
Also, a furry being married to a Hylian is also very off-putting to me. I don't know how that works, I don't want to find out, and I have no interest in learning more about Rauru or Sonia. Their fates had zero emotional impact on me, so I didn't get much out of that part of the storyline.
I could go on, but I'll stop there.
As far as rankings, I would place TotK with BotW because they are very similar. Here's how I rank the 3D Zelda games:
OoT/MM
BotW/TotK
TWW
SS
TP
So yeah, didn't love it, didn't hate it. Like with BotW, I'm very frustrated by all the untapped potential. As an avid Zelinker, I see the entire arc of BotW and TotK as an epic story of love, loss, bravery, and sacrifice. Link and Zelda both mirror and complement each other in so many ways, and I love the creative potential in that.
I also love the limitless exploration in both games - it keeps me interested for hours. But when the next Zelda game is revealed, I'd like to see a new formula, preferably a more classic one.

After receiving a vision of a mysterious girl held captive by a terrible monster, Shiren and Koppa make their way to Serpentcoil Island—a distant isle rumored to be the lost stronghold of treasure-hoarding pirates. To brave the many dangers that await them, Shiren and Koppa must traverse complex dungeons filled with hostile monsters, hidden traps, and useful items. All the gear and experience Shiren accumulates will be lost if he collapses during exploration, so beware of rushing in unprepared! Rescue the mysterious girl and uncover the mystery that clouds Serpentcoil Island. The forthcoming release for Nintendo Switch marks the series’ latest mainline entry to come to the West since Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate was released on PlayStation Vita in 2016 and then on Nintendo Switch in 2020. While preserving the traditional gameplay, this installment introduces new elements and 3D graphics to create a fresh and exciting adventure.
About the Shiren the Wanderer Series
Shiren the Wanderer series of roguelike RPG games began with the 1995 release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for the Super Famicom in Japan. Players venture into a “Mystery Dungeon” that changes each time they enter. To succeed, they need to rely on their wits, experience, and creative thinking to overcome monsters, avoid perilous traps, and conquer the dungeon. Players who run out of energy during their journey will lose all of their possessions including tools, money, and gear, and must start again at level one. Players will experience a thrilling and tense adventure with unexpected events and risks that cannot be redone.

So team asano has once again flubbed a bravely app and BDBL is ending in february (13 month lifespan total.) The fact that they have done this four times is so embarrassing. I'm embarrassed for them. They need to stop doing this.
I've been mad all along that the devs straight up admitted that BDBL was given equal dev time and priority to BD2, that they consider BDBL a "main" entry, that they're considering having bravely's future be on smartphones, etc. But the really stupid part is that they fucking suck at this. BDBL's failure was written on the wall from month one and if I could see it than man, they really should have too.
Like either BDBL was never built to last or they went about this really stupidly. They include all bd1/2 protags and all their equipment at launch, aka all the most popular characters, so there goes any chance of really making money down the line. They have a set, very bland story that nobody seems to really like. No cute or fun seasonal events/alts, just the same Fight Enemy Over And Over grind. The game has always been crashy, unreliable, buggy, et cetera, and the stabilization improvements have been iffy. 3d graphics = massive load times, doesn't run on old phones, barely runs on others. Worst of all, the gameplay is incredibly barebones - a stripped down battle system where everyone has two fixed moves and a basic attack/heal. No dungeons, no customization, no exploration, no jobs, no player interaction, nothing. There was no plan. I have no idea how they were expecting to make money off this. Maybe it was always meant to be limited time but...I doubt that.
Not to mention...promising there would be no character gacha and that all characters would be equal and usable. Ahaha. Ahahahaha. Out of the launch characters, most of them aren't even usable anymore, and a lot of them sucked from day one. Edea, Adelle, Anihal, Nikolai, never good. Khint, Ominas, only good against certain enemies. And then selene, seth, ringabel, janne, all nerfed into oblivion....gloria and agnes are interchangable.....list goes on this is all just otoh....
I've seen the dropping ratings and profits, writing's been on the wall from the start. This isn't surprising and it's for the best, but damn, they really messed this up. I don't even know how they thought this would ever be a successful endeavor
But lbr the alternative is a "success" like Octo/path COTC, and I don't really want that either. COTC has a nasty gacha system, a nastier fanbase, and massive amounts of marketing and pressure to spend, so that sounds...also super unpleasant. Also an incredibly misogynistic, racist, frankly terrible story. but that's neither here nor there, it's making money and that's what matters :))))
At least we got new art and a sprinkling of lore for the blorbos, that's the only upside in all this mess. I would have rather had a proper final chapter for bd2 though!! imagine!!! caring about your franchise enough to give characters their proper due!!! But we don't do that in 8path (that galdera ending SUCKS and I'm tired of pretending it doesn't) or bd2 I guess
seriously though people are right about squeenix apps, they suck, and team asano really sucks at them, so i hope they stop sooner than later. like i said, embarrassed for them. mad on bd2's behalf (also eng fandom already somehow blaming bd2 for this is pretty funny. if bd2 soulless why best game?* checkmate)
*my best game lol

Should i get into dragalia because the music on that love wins video slapped severely
you should get into dragalia! dragalia music slaps. but the music on the love wins is not from dragalia, but rather Bravely Default— a JRPG for the 3DS (the song is Love's Vagrant, the character theme for Ringabel— an amnesiac who joins the party)! the music bangs. i'm still gonna link dragalia music because i'm insane. i'm gonna link songs i like from launch until now. i'll also link bravely default songs after
also, dragalia has already announced end of service. there's no confirmed date, only that it will be after the main story ends (which is soon, but it won't end immediately after). i understand if you wouldnt want to get into something thats ending already but i still recommend the game
anyways here are the songs
a lot of the dragalia launch songs feature vocalist DAOKO, but as the game went on every new event produced new music. ill try to be chronological but i could be wrong. from varying yt links bc im on mobile 💀 the music style changes quite a bit throughout because they stopped having daoko songs added idk? they went for variety. its good.
the playlists on yt are a little messy honestly just look up dragalia lost ost and play whatever comes on.
the first dungeon theme, Onisan Kochira
the regular boss theme goes crazy
it has a night version
the volcano dungeon
boss theme against the ch 5 boss iirc
boss from an event about a soprano choir (by lucrezia) (first event to have special music i think!)
idol summer event
void boss theme
a version of the fire emblem theme
chapter 11 quest theme
the agito (phase 1)
the agito (phase 2)
bon fever (one of my personal faves!)
island death game
2nd anniversary event boss themes!
legend agito phase 1 + 2
the phantom's ransom (opera event) belladonna solo karina solo (theyre the same song but sang by 2 people and in different keys)
princess connect crossover theme
case i (pretty much a pivotal emotional moment kinda theme. i recommend reading the lyrics, theyre in the comments)
demons
hollow dance
2.5 anni event theme
we are with the fish people (by lucrezia, recurring artist!)
unique (personal fav! even if the event was eh. the music goes hard. this artist, WON, is also recurring! hard recommend WONs music)
oh no stranded on an island with my siblings! (i like this one a lot. also its the song of the video in my pinned)
3rd anniversary event all phases
we get an aromaticist and androids to perform theater on halloween
christmas event about a guy and his dragon father and basically the goddess of this world (also by WON)
primal dragon trials phase 1 & 2
3.5 event theme (the last event theme we'll be getting...)
chapter 26 part 2, the final part of the main story is coming very soon! tomorrow, actually. we might get new music then, who knows?
ok now for some bravely default songs. these go fucking crazy. i wont link as much since its been a while since i played and i dont remember the songs or all of the story. composer is revo
the playlist, just because.
pause menu
default battle
forest dungeon theme i think
asterisk battle theme, basically u beat them and get jobs/classes
crystal bosses
tiz arrior's theme, You Are My Hope
agnes oblige's theme, Wind's Direction
edea lee's theme, Baby Bird
ringabel's theme which i mentioned earlier, Love's Vagrant
spoiler boss themes ahead. if you care about spoilers dont read the comments

So, I'm gonna have a few hours of freetime after class today that I'll not really be able to do anything but draw during (don't have a switch on me or my 3ds) and since I'd rather not be just staring at my phone for several hours...
Anyone have any suggestions of things to draw? I'll mostly be sticking to fandom stuff (or my own OCs), but maybe I'll draw other things as well.
Fandoms/games under cut
Fandoms: Pokemon, PMD (Minus GtI), Bravely Series (minus BD2), Ace Attorney, Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler (1 and 2*)
Other games: Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Kid Icarus Uprising, Okami, Mario and Luigi (BiS and PJ), Chocobo's Dungeon, Stella Glow, Etrian Odyssey (EOU and EO5)
*I'll only be drawing the main 8 in regardsto 2, as I've yet to beat the game and don't want to risk going to the wiki for references.
I'll also not draw any of the following, as I've not reached them yet: Ochette chpt 2 (Glacies) and onwards, Castti chpt 4, Throné chpt 3 (Father) and onwards, Osvald chpt 4 and onwards, Partitio chapter 3 and onwards, Agnea chpt 4 and onwards, Temenos Chapter 3 (Stormhail) and onwards, Hikari chapter 4 and onwards, any any postgame content

I wanted to redo this post on my favorite 3DS games b/c I ended up quitting SMT IV Apocalypse (hate the final dungeon in the neutral path storyline). I also wanted to focus on games I've beaten and would want to replay, rather than include games I'm still playing (Tales of The Abyss, Bravely Second, Persona Q2). Of course, this could change when I beat any of these.
Etrian Odyssey Untold II, Fantasy Life, and 7th Dragon III Code VFD are especially important to me because these are games I bought digitally and am willing to keep on my 3DS XL's standard SD card.
Speaking of which, I would've been willing to get a bigger SD card if they had a slot instead of putting the damn card inside the 3DS. 😑

Amalock, Kiri no Fuchi   /   Beyond the Fog, Blue Lock: EPISODE Nagi, Onmyoji Zero, YOKOHAMA, Japanese Film Trailers
Welcome to the first of two trailer posts of the week. The second trailer post arrives tomorrow. I’m coming to the final couple of boss battles in Bravely Default on the 3Ds and I’m eager to end the game. I’ve maxed out every class and got end-game weaponry and a nice class configuration for my characters. All that is left to do is a final dungeon and four boss battles. After that, Fire Emblem:…

Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PC/Steam Deck)
While it initially didn't leave Japan, Final Fantasy V got significantly better treatment than FFIII did in port work, so there's more on offer when choosing a 'definitive edition' of it. But, Square being a little cowardly, their 3D remake work stopped at IV in the mid/late 2000s and V didn't get a saucy PSP port like IV did, only a blighted original mobile port like the rest of the series got.
With less competition and the Pixel Remaster of V being a similar amalgamation of other versions, with the GBA version primarily as its base, I think the Pixel Remasters get to claim another definitive version here. Yes, the GBA's bonus dungeon and extra four jobs aren't here, but outside of Gladiator I never overly liked any of them (I really like Necromancer conceptually and its sprites are great, but it's so fussy to use); outside of that, the PR's aesthetics generally exceed the GBA and the new remix/new arrangement OST is superb (and on console, you can swap between the original and it, too; sadly, not ported into the PC release, despite Square saying they would a while ago).
I don't think the extra jobs are worth playing GBA over the Pixel Remaster release, but the GBA version is the runner-up; FFV had a much cleaner time on SNES than IV but you're dependent on fan translations to play that version, and at times egregious references aside, the GBA script for V is good enough. V is a much more light-hearted and more comedic game than the other two SNES FFs, so even that works, though the PR tones some of it down to my memory.
FFV is a pretty great RPG; it's a surprise return to III's job system and in many ways feels almost like a direct sequel of III specifically, in ideas and concepts throughout. Its job system is more robust and actually allows cross-class skill and ability usage, and provides many, many avenues to make really fucked up, stupidly powerful characters and teams. It would be the basis for the job systems of the later Tactics spinoffs in particular, and a lot of the same joy I get from making monsters there is very much here, though it's more constrained in some ways.
Oh yeah, there's a little oddity with this one for Steam Deck; despite the previous four having in-game keyboards for name entry (and all the originals having that, naturally), V doesn't, it makes you use the system keyboard instead and VI seems to be the same way, It suggests V and VI were done differently in some way, which is weird, but outside of that it works as flawlessly as the last four on Steam Deck.
More waffle below, but in short, well worth playing. V often gets stepped over or forgotten, or isn't considered as highly (and there's some fair reasons for that) as IV and VI, but it's a special one.
I found that I didn't remember a lot of V's actual events, and I think that's partly because of the job system's implementation. Unlike III, which forced usage of specific jobs for specific sections, V does not design sections to force your usage of specific classes at specific times. The closest it gets is the Fork Tower sequence, where you have to divide your party to ascend two towers in tandem and each side fights a boss; the Black Tower is pretty biased against physical attacker classes and its boss is split open by Reflect, but the White Tower only has one actual hard-counter enemy to mage classes.
This has a bit of a "numbing"/"nulling" effect to V, I think; a lot of it can simply be crushed under heel, even quite a lot of its significant roster of bosses can be drilled into the earth pretty simply. In seeking to design for freedom and, nobly, designing to allow often broken teams to excel, a lot of V's encounters fade into the background of Dualcast + Mime, or Flare/Holy Spellblade on a Dual-Wield Freelancer toting Excalibur(/Ragnarok) + Brave Blade, or etc etc.
And it's not for lack of character. V's cast get a fair amount of time for character, even if they're individually limited in traits, and they have very expressive and often deliberately silly overworld sprites and animations that make for a lot of funny and endearing little scenes, which makes the rather frequent tragedies hit above their weight. Galuf in particular is a shining star in that regard. And this is the game where Gilgamesh makes his glorious debut, too, V is packed with character. It's just more "concentrated", I suppose, and the ability to just shit all over encounters and bosses by engaging more deeply with the job system makes it harder for them to be as memorable as IV's or VI's bosses. I think the devs realised that for VI, which is why VI has a lot of extremely distinctive setpiece bosses (and this basically holds for the Playstation ones as well).
Also, it must be said; V is a visual splendour. Unlike I and III where everyone of a job looks the same, each character has their own sprites and looks for each job to both vary them up and express character, and it's fucking great. Just look over the sprite sheets for the player characters and their jobs sometime, they're a total delight and it's lovely to see all the different styles they have. This is where the FFIII 3D remake gets a lot of its tweaks to III's job system from, but I think V still manages it better by virtue of its cast being more varied (old man Galuf and his beard poking out, tiny little Krile visibly being too short for some outfits, the contrast in Lenna and Faris' outfits, etc).
With IV having firmly established the aesthetic identity and "feel" of a Final Fantasy, V builds on it by adding many more series staples and more firmly entrenching a lot of standard ideas. Gilgamesh, recurring character (it's the same guy from V every time!), debuts here as mentioned, but this is also where Blue Mage makes its beautiful debut and the entire Blue Magic system (learning weird and sometimes immensely powerful spells from enemies) and a lot of recurring Blue Magic spells comes about. This is also where the series gains a noticeable shift in art design for quite a few of its enemies, as it's the series' artistic debut for Tetsuya Nomura, who goes on to be graphic designer for VI and then co-scenario writer and character designer and a core member of the art staff for VII.
Also, it needs to be said; debates about "best Final Fantasy villain" usually centre around a regular few candidates, but key among them is Kefka, villain of VI, who often gets touted as the best for his success. But, thing is (and I'll probably waffle about this more next time as well), it depends on your definition of "success"; if nothing else, Kefka himself admits he never achieved his desired goals despite what he does.
In that sense, Exdeath, the villain of V, is distinctly more successful than Kefka, coming right up to the precipice of success. He's an extremely active villain, too, man is out there on the ground blasting people and casting whole societies into the Void. He practically orchestrates his plan as a war campaign, and a rather capably commanded one at that. Unfortunately for him he also has to deal with some of the most insanely powerful Warriors of Light around.
With its focus on crystals, a villain attempting to drown the world in primordial darkness, the job system and more, V really does feel like a fresh shot at III's concepts. It's kind of fascinating in that respect, and makes me wonder what could've been if they had decided to stick with the job system in the main series. Hell, with Tactics being on ice for a while now, they really need to get back around to this style of job system.

Eduardo is due to work through this complex setting to find his place in the world. Brave Eduardo is inspired by a legend about teddy bears that are forgotten under kids' beds. These teddy bears secretly protect the kids while they sleep. They also fight against the evils that try to hurt them.
