1, 4, and 26?
what song makes you feel better?
There's a medley of Hobbit drinking songs that's a pretty reliable mood-booster.
4. what flower would you like to be given?
I had a bouquet of some gorgeous pink-and-orange roses that recently died, and I would like a replacement.
26. what movie would you want to live in?
The world of Tangled seems like a nice place. For a fantasy world, the dangers are pretty low-key, the people seem generally happy, and the aesthetic is fantastic.

oh my god tumblr is not a functional website and it ate my next two drafted asks so prepare to get tagged in textposts but @brambleberrycottage sent The Mentalist and/or Person of Interest for the fandom ask game:
✨ send me a fandom and i'll answer with the following!
Tumblr media
for person of interest:
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
↣ very tough choice but i am gonna have to go with shaw for this one. my second choice probably would be reese tho- but i have to go by what ao3 tags i filter the most 😭
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
↣ BEAR THE DOG.....OBVIOUSLY....... akjdhdjfhf but for real it is probably finch. finch rly is So Shaped to me. i do not want anything bad to happen to him Ever. Protect At All Costs
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
↣ FUSCO. FUSCO IS SUCH AN UNDERRATED FAVE. theres like 10 fics out there about my man fusco and ive reread all of them 100 times aldjfkfhjfgjgj this man just shows up to work every day and tries his best and he gets dragged into some of the craziest world-altering conspiracies known to man and for what ??? he just wants to come home to his son every day. but he cares about people and his friends and the world his son grows up IN, and thats why he sticks by the others no matter what he gets put thru. also he is just very funny and relatable at times akdhdjfhf
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
↣ harper!!! very much obscure but she has a cute lil arc that feels Meaningful and has such a fun energy and she has such an ~ outcome ~ (i will not spoil in case anyone who has not seen this show is thinking of seeing it) and tbh i want to learn everything about her
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
↣ elias. he is very problematic. very controversial. horrible villain crimelord etc etc. but isnt it interesting how this show plays with morality? how much nuance there is? how you slowly learn that finch is right- that there are no heroes or villains, just people doing the best they can??? elias is a terrible person that you would never want to meet in real life but hes MY terrible person you would never want to meet in real life.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
↣ this is reese hands down. sorry not sorry to the traumatized man but i do kind of enjoy you getting more traumatized
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
↣ i guess john greer ???? im not sorry, forget everything i said about nuance hes a villain akdhfdjkfhfj he is the worst im joking but if i have to pick anyone its him
Tumblr media
for the mentalist:
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
↣ its jane. of course its jane. what we have learned about me is i am always stanning traumatized over confident (often middle aged middle aged) men in problematic career paths with emotional issues 😭 its embarrassing how consistent i rly am tbh lmao. but HES SO INTERESTING. HES SO TRAGIC. HES SO MULTIFACETED. i could probably write 600 dissertations about him
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
↣ lisbon is my girl i love her so much i will not take any notes on this she is MY five foot nothing cop with anger management issues and i WOULD die for her. shes probably my height irl but she is !!!! small. i love her
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
↣ cho is so underrated !!!!! he is there from start to finish and he gets his own arcs and his own story and he's level-headed and in charge but he's not emotionless and he's not perfect, he's very good at what he does but he makes mistakes too and he's mature enough to own up to them. his realism and commitment is bracing and reliable and brings such a steady element to the show. couldnt do it without him!!
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
↣ she's really not even on screen for more than like 0.1 seconds of flashback but !!! ANGELA JANE. i know we don't get to know much in the way of cannonical characterization but i have read a lot of fics about her. i think the most influential has to be boy wonder, which is a wonderful how-angela-and-young-patrick-met fic unfortunately trapped on the horrible formatting of fanfiction dot net, but every time i think of angela i think of this fic and it very deeply informed my love for her character.
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
↣ probably laroche. deeply weird man but he just wanted to go home to his little figurines and his fluffy dog. what more could he ask for. very creepy vibe but he did his job well and he came around in the end. i would love to know what sort of life made this man happen. i think about the iconic theater episode with him every day.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
↣ aaaaa once again its jane im so sorry sir i just find your trauma entertaining !!!!!
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
↣ probably bertram because i just think he was way scarier than the sherriff sorry sljfkfjfjg

1, 14, 17, 18, and 29 for fic writer asks?
1. Share a song that makes you think of [fic title] i don't have one? but i can't hear stayin' alive without thinking of bbc's sherlock if that counts. 😅 14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick? comic for my narnia fic hope just because i really want to see pevensies in flower crowns. and a film for the 15k unpublished lockwood fic that's haunting me. (see what i did there?) 17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic? i learned different flower languages for hope. and you helped me figure out ghost stuff for the lockwood fic. :) 18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic? had a lot of fun with my narnia fics so here's two lines from two different ones:
Inaction is a choice, Edmund Pevensie thought as he rounded the corner of the schoolyard. Inaction is an action. [...] (Edmund would have some Things To Say about the phrase “only following orders” when WWII came to an end.)
and
“Hope does not put us to shame,” Lucy said. “Courage, Queen Susan."
29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. from the unfinished, unpublished stranger thing fic that also haunts me:
“Chrissy Cunningham?” Nancy asked hesitantly. Completely at a loss, but still gripping her pipe with practiced, unconscious ease, Chrissy said, “Yes?” Chrissy liked to think she had handled the apocalypse well, with not too many hiccups. Granted the hiccups she had overcome were life threatening and unforgiving. But this was the most surprised Chrissy had been here in… well, since a monster stole her mother's voice then told her not to cry. And since a demon bat took a chunk out of her ear. They both studied each other in silence for a minute.
You always send me asks and I love it so much <3 thank you for the fic asks!

Drabble: I could punch you right now
“I could punch you right now,” Tim says with an exhausted huff. “It’d be easy to drop you and stick my fist in your face, and instead I’m being the best brother you’ve ever had and carrying you to the car.”
“You, hh, sound like Jason,” Dick pants. “Pretty sure, you guys…only hang out…to torment me.”
One foot in front of the other is one of the hardest things Dick has ever had to do. Even with Timmy supporting half his weight, Dick is barely staying upright. He really, really hopes that whatever was in that syringe wasn’t fatal.
“I hang out with Jason just as much as I hang out with Damian,” Tim snarks. “You’re the one who keeps planning family get-togethers.”
“‘Cause we’re family,” Dick says, surrendering even more of his weight to Tim. Everything is starting to spin. “And families…should get together…sometimes.”
Tim notices the extra weight. “Come on, Nightwing. We’re almost there. Just a few more blocks and we’re home free.”
Tim sounds scared. Dick doesn’t like it.
“You and I…have a different opinion…of what home free means,” Dick splutters. He’s completely out of breath, and it’s hard to draw in any oxygen into his lungs.
“Home free means not walking anymore,” Tim says, grunting with the effort of dragging Dick along. “And once we get to the car, I can start working on the antidote to whatever it is they shot you up with.”
Dick means to acknowledge Tim’s words, but he doesn’t have the breath. Black spots are infiltrating his vision and his head feels like it’s filling up with helium.
“Gonna…pass out,” Dick murmurs.
“You’re gonna be fine, Dick,” Tim says, though his voice sounds far away. “I’m going to make sure of it. Just stay with me.”
“I’ll...try.”

DWJ questions: Did you read The Game? Archer’s Goon? Do her books feel unfinished at times? First drafts rather than final?
To the first two questions: yes and yes!
To the second two questions: ...mostly no, but I think I see what you're getting at.
A few of her books—The Game included—did leave me going "wait, we're done already??" Because she covers a lot of ground. Some of her books have so many things going on and being revealed over the course of the story that I'm like "wait, slow down, can't we spend more time exploring this?"
But that doesn't strike me as feeling like a draft—I think it's just how she wanted to tell those stories. She resolves every thread she sets up, which isn't easy! :P In The Game, for instance, I would have loved more time in the mythosphere, and a modern book would probably have spent more time there and used considerably more pages to tell the same story. (Honestly, in today's fantasy market, I can easily see that plot getting bulked out into two or three books.) But the story didn't need more time or pages to be told. So the places where she glances over things feel more like a stylistic decision than a flaw to me.
That said, I do get some of that "unfinished" or at least "unresolved" feeling with more of her books, and I think that's because she often wasn't interested in wrap-up. Some of her books have epilogues or other closing scenes after all the action, but sometimes they just...keep going until the end of the plot, and then abruptly drop the curtain. And if you've had a very quick-moving climax, that can be disorienting. (As I said in a post yesterday, I like it when the characters have wrap parties. :P)
I'd put Howl's Moving Castle in this category—everyone is saved, Howl and Sophie are holding hands, everyone resolves the remaining plot threads around them in dialogue (which they are not paying attention to), and then Calcifer returns, tying up the reader's one remaining concern. And it ends right there. No more lines.
So...I think she's good at plotting, and the stories we get are the stories she wanted to tell. But I would say that some of her books' final scenes, as final scenes, don't conclude so much as just stop.

Do you know which books you'll be teaching this fall? Favourite vault track(s) from Speak Now? Anything stand out to you in the vocals for Taylor's versions?
Ahhh thank you for asking! And these are such fun questions.
So, I decided today that I’m going to start with Neighor Rosicky (a Willa Cather short story) with my 8th graders, A Tale of Two Cities (Dickens) with my sophomores, and some poetry and then One Day in the Life (Solzhenitsyn) OR Dante with my seniors. In the best way possible I want to knock Dickens out of the way quickly while spirit is high and the weather is kindly and save Beowulf (my usual beginning book) for the depths of winter. I’m tired of starting my 8th graders with Frankenstein so I think a lovely and more accessible short story like Neighbor Rosicky will be a gentle breaking in. And then—I want to either do a short snappy (wonderful) little novel with my seniors (one day) or just dive into one of our greatest works right away (the inferno!), I’m still mulling it over.
The rest of the fall will include Hamlet, Frankenstein, and then Romeo and Juliet. (Across my classes.)
I love the Speak Now vault tracks SOOO much—it’s so hard choose. Each song is such a treasure. If forced to choose, I think my favorite is Castles Crumbling just because it’s so personal to me but Timeless and Foolish One are RIGHT THERE. I have a new affection for I Can See You since I heard it live—like, it’s just increasingly wonderful. When Emma Falls in Love is so gorgeous and poignant and TRUE and made me weep like a baby the first time I heard it. Electric Touch is probably my least favorite but I feel bad saying that because it’s SO MUCH FUN and also so haunting and has also grown on me so much!!!
And lastly, I don’t think any specific moments stand out to me on the re-recordings but overall I’m so impressed with how much she’s been able to reclaim the songs and have them truly sound the same. Not literally (though sometimes close.) The differences are there for the better—her vocals are so much warmer and fuller and more sure—and sometimes just for the ….other, I guess. I won’t say worse. Just that—there are moments where it’s just impossible for her to capture the song in exactly the same way because the song NEEDED to be recorded at that exact moment in time for it to sound the way it did. And yet the essence is THERE. The magic of the song, the heart of the song, the power of her very specific delivery are all there because SHE hasn’t changed! She is still her, and in some ways only more so. So I love hearing all the songs again and appreciating not only the sometimes more polished vocals or careful instrumentation but also just the way she CAN reclaim the songs because she has in no way strayed from the artist she was, but has just grown into her more and more truthfully.
That’s a long answer but I have a lot of feelings! Thank you for asking! ❤️ This was fun.

I saw your time travelers character post and was curious if you’ve any of that story available to read? Sounds fascinating!
These time travelers are part of one of those daydream premises that I'm more interested in thinking about than actually writing. (Some ideas are like that and I'm learning to be okay with that.) It's simmering in the background, but at most it'll produce maybe a couple of short stories.
I outlined the premise in this post, which goes into such detail about the time travel mechanics that I can't even bring myself to reread it, but it provides the background for this universe.
I talk about the main characters from that post in more detail here.
Here's the post about Sallie and Jeremiah, two other time travelers from this universe.
The only piece of fiction I've shared is this short snippet from a Christmas story starring Sallie and Jeremiah. They were going to be my Inklings Challenge Christmas story, but I never got much beyond that snippet. The basic plot is actually rather similar to the Beauty and the Beast Christmas story that I did write (person unable to see family for Christmas because of rules gets to see them because of a friend who figured out how to bend the rules), so I'm not sure I should bother reusing the premise, but I still love the characters.

Reverse unpopular: Theodore Roosevelt?
You've given me an excuse to share the funny Roosevelt stories from the podcast! One of the things I love about this man is how much he adores his children, and all the wild things they got up to in the White House.
So there's a story of a time when Roosevelt had a meeting in the Oval Office, and his youngest son comes in on roller skates carrying three snakes he found. And Roosevelt's like, "Wow, that's so cool! But you know, this is a pretty important meeting. Why don't you go next door and show them to the Congressmen who are waiting for me?" And the kid does! And one of the Congressmen winds up crawling around to help him catch a runaway king snake.
(There's another podcast story that had me in stitches, about how Roosevelt invited a famous big game hunter from England to come and see him while he was in America. The guy shows up in Roosevelt's office, he closes the door, and the conversation goes on for an hour or two--people can faintly hear them rattling on and on through the door. Finally the hunter emerges, looking rather overwhelmed, and people are like, "What did you say to the president?" The guy's like, "I told him my name.")
There's one bio that mentioned how Roosevelt would do strange things that usually had a logical explanation, like the time he shocked a crowded bus by making weird faces at them from the presidential carriage, but it turned out that he was just returning the faces a group of schoolboys--including his son--was making at him. That phrasing of "strange behavior with a logical explanation" applied to a man who was a public figure at the beginning of the 20th century, makes me wonder if there's any chance there's a Roosevelt influence to Innocent Smith in Manalive. There probably isn't, but those Chestertonian moments are when I find myself liking this guy the most.

Luke and Mara?
This is an easy one, I'm afraid! I do not ship them even a little bit.
1- Why don't you ship it?
For one, I didn't read most of the material they were even in. I'm into the films, and ships that involve characters that aren't even in the films are intrinsically not interesting to me (and I've never bought into the idea of "no actually there are all these other Force-users floating around as Imperial policy", then or now).
For another, I headcanon Luke as asexual, and usually as aro/ace + happily celibate and "alone" for a Skywalker value of alone. I see his bonds to Leia, Han, and Anakin (two of which are literal psychic bonds) as the most important in his life. There are some Luke ships I like in fanfic, but as far as canon goes, I don't like the idea of him in a romantic relationship with anyone and after ROTJ especially, I can't really see it.
On top of that, certain parts of the fandom pushed the pairing really hard in my first few years in SW fandom. I did not appreciate being corrected, pressured, and sent outright hate over not being into Expanded Universe-only stuff and over headcanoning Luke as aro/ace. I've never gotten more unbridled hatred in my asks over anything and I try not to let that shape what I think, but it certainly did not soften my feelings.
2- What would have made you like it?
It would really need to have been woven into the films in a satisfying way that didn't sideline Luke's other critical relationships. Mara would probably have needed to be there from ANH or at least early in ESB—not necessarily "there" in scenes with Luke, but established with a role of her own in the story so it didn't feel tacked on or obligatory. And Luke's vibes in ROTJ would also have to be pretty different.
A pretty steep task, obviously. But I've always really loved that the resolution of Luke's arc in the OT doesn't involve "getting the girl", or getting anyone in that sense. For him, the happiest possible ending is all about his relationships with his father and his sister and his friends, and it's honestly still refreshing for me to see that. So it'd have to be incredibly good in the films for me to actually ship it, even if some specific things could lessen my dislike.
3- Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
From what I can tell, Mara is a pretty cool character in her own right, and her books do seem to be among the better ones. The general outline of the dynamics between Mara and Luke as far as I've osmosed them seem like they could make for a really compelling kind of enemies -> battle couple pairing if I were into that for Luke.

WIP guess game: water, hurt, blood, and grin?
✨ send me a word & find it in my wip! ✨
It’s taken years, and grief like water raining down, pang after pang of loss and one realization after another, none of them gentle, for him to develop this newfound hesitancy.
Maybe if Maverick wasn’t a person that Bradley has irreversibly hurt, changed, and damaged; a person now wary of the many pitfalls of loving Bradley.
It tastes a little like ash, now, a little like blood- he’s lived long enough and hard enough to recognize the sensation.
“What’s up, kiddo?” Mav asks at first, but the smile on his face grinds to a halt when the realization fully hits him.
AAAAAAA thank u so much for the ask !!! and GOD i'm so sorry that it is taking me so long to answer asks atm but pls know that i appreciate u always sending them so much and i always look forward to getting to answer them <3<3 also if you see me share a wip sentence and then never see it in the completed eventual wip no u didn't lol

i think what drives me nuts most about ai is it's not actually creating anything. i write stories out of passion from inside and inspiration from around me. but ai just gets its 'feelings' from everyone it can find online, summarizes it, and spits out a middling version of the creativity of others. ai compiles a version of emotions and events from what the prompt is. it'll never look at a cherry tree blooming in spring and be inspired to write a poem on its own. it can only write a poem based on past poems in its data and spit out that version of all of them and even then it's "creativity" is curtailed by whatever boundaries the prompt gave. there is no feeling or passion or life there. there's no soul. it's a slap to the face of those who create when you say ai 'created' something. no. it's just mimicking what it can't do on it's own by taking others ideas.
