Early on we realised that with the vast size difference between our romantic leads, Ash needed big, expressive features so their emotions would still read even in full-body panels where they appear much smaller on the page than Ana. When we tried exaggerating Ash's eyes, we found it alleviated this issue while also giving them the cute and adorable appearance we were aiming for.

Since I’m trying to regain enthusiasm for BotP, I thought I’d start sharing some excerpts again. This is from the new version of chapter 2.

Mistress Dia returned to the horses, who were braying something fierce. It wasn’t long before Mistress Dia was hopping into the box, and the horses ran like Odix was on their heels. Er, hooves. They disappeared up the dirt road, and I suddenly realized there were no stables in this town. Not a single one.

I pulled my new coat up and buried my face in its warmth. Alone, with my head buried in darkness, I took a deep breath. Then I dropped the coat, straightened my back, and hurried along. I didn’t want to keep the High Elf – Amadens, as Master Cabitor had called her – waiting.

The plaza was much closer than I’d thought. Just over the creek – so shallow and thin there wasn’t even a bridge – and down the hill a few paces. The western side of Infinite Falls was much nicer than the eastern. It was easy to see why. The western half of the city held its namesake: a river that was cut into an infinite waterfall by the tall magical barrier that separated Sotex from Contaterra.

Despite its intrigue, the border was downright eerie. I’d always heard that animals hated Atorium’s borders, but Infinite Falls was empty of dogs and cats and cattle and sheep. I’d always thought it was the wild animals who hated it. Birds, deer, boars, and the like. But it seemed that no one in this town could keep domestic animals, either. Nevertheless, it seemed us mortals were drawn to such unusual phenomena. From the buildings along the river, it was clear that wealthy Sotexans often traveled here.

The border certainly was a marvel, though. The west side of Infinite Falls easily stretched another two or three miles from the plaza. And even across all that distance, over the tall brick buildings that were unusual for the outer ring, I could see the towering black border. Overhead, the cloudy blue sky faded into an impossible grey. The ground, too. The grass east of here was vibrant as the beetle wings that embroidered noblewomen’s gowns. And yet the vibrancy faded with each step west - until the grass lining the river banks was the dullest, most lifeless shade of grey. Not to mention the low humming. The vibrations that tickled the ground, even as far away as the plaza. It was every bit as horrifying as dad had described. And every bit as spectacular.

Beware of the Princess got effectively put on hold for a couple of months due to a couple of key people doing the whole "getting married" thing. But work is starting to pick up again! There's been lots of experimentation with workflows and the overall style to help get into a good groove with completing panels.

For the first time in a long time the delays are being dealt with faster than they are piling up, so with a bit of luck you can expect more frequent updates from us!

Intro to my Phoenix!Phoenix AU

One thing I love about 'Phoenix being an actual Phoenix' AU's is that everyone can kind of put their own spin on it, maybe he has feathers and can talk to birds or is immune to fire, but because making a humanoid character into a mythical reincarnating bird is already deviating from every type of lore out there, you can just do whatever you want with it, which is my favorite thing to do.

The most important part of my particular Phoenix AU is his blood. In this au, his blood is what bursts into flames when he dies or is jumpstarted by an outside source of fire. It glows like molten metal to heal wounds and can even be transferred to another host to give them a bit of a magical healing boost in extreme situations.

He can set his blood on fire to jumpstart his own rebirth to skip the whole 'dying' thing, but that comes with its own consequences. It leaves him extremely weak and feverish for days afterward. In this AU he did take Dahlia's poison pills, and he ate the necklace, though because he almost died too recently, he still gets scars from the glass and the subsequent surgeries, he just wasn't strong enough to heal completely. It's why he gets away from eagle river with just a cold, he caught some of the debris of the flaming bridge and that ultimately saved him during the impact. Or at least kept him from having to fully die.

The fire fueled by phoenix blood is an unnatural blue and gets so hot that it melts metal and sets things around it aflame really easily. It extinguishes itself once Phoenix is healed but leaves behind scorch marks (both anywhere it touched and on Phoenix's body) and the normal fire that spawns from it needs to be dealt with more normally. Being reborn won't completely burn his suit off, but will leave ashy black marks in the places he was injured. idk how to logic that one out, I just think he deserves the mercy of not having to wake up from dying to be naked on top of everything else.

Phoenix can change forms, but as he wants to keep his mythical status a bit of a secret, he rarely does so and isn't good enough at transforming to do it during more urgent situations. His fear of heights also makes him less inclined to go birdmode. It's only after his disbarment that he becomes more comfortable testing out his own abilities and even joins Trucy in her magic shows as a flaming bird assistant. When he wants to watch his junior partners' trials, he occasionally attends in birdmode and hangs out in the courthouse windows. Sometimes he will swoop down to defend his kids from Taka as he has a bit of a grudge against the bird. He appears like Mia in times when hope is lost to scream a little, because he is a bird. Physical indicators of his true nature can mostly be hidden by his clothes, he has patches of small iridescent black/blue/indigo feathers like soft scales on his forearms, shoulders, back, hips, and lower legs. His hair is not quite made up of feathers but kind of supplemented by more featherlike bits of hair that only become obvious when touching it. He still has plausible deniability about his weird hair. His nails are naturally matte black and his eyelashes are long and dark enough to be noticeable but not too unusual.

Pre-Trucy he's trying his best to hide this part of himself but he gets more relaxed about it during his disbarment. when before he would refuse to roll his sleeves up even on the hottest of days, he gets more open about it with her. By the time he gets reinstated, his secret is kind of out so he sees no reason to try so hard to hide it.

One thing I'm still mulling over is how his immortality works. Either he can be good at being able to revive himself before he fully dies which causes him to reincarnate/regenerate into a new baby form with no/few memories of his life before or he could die, but only fully reincarnate every hundred or so years. This is all to say that I want his previous form to be Ryuunosuke. There are just core pieces of his personality that continue on, like being gay for his best friend and becoming a lawyer for him, and also his weird hair and big puppy eyes.

Also with all the talk about blood, I think a spinoff AU with Edgeworth being a vampire would just be fun. But I don't know how phoenix blood would affect a vampire... like would it reverse the vampirism? Would it partially reverse it? would it reverse the undead part but keep some of the silly vampire features? I haven't decided yet but it sounds funky to consider.

now to figure out what to call it... maybe Blood of the Phoenix (BotP AU), idk I'm taking suggestions now lmao

who steals french fries off the other’s plate: Sabine has usually snatched up Kurt's entire plate before he's gotten done disinfecting his hands. He learns to order food she doesn't like to stop her from doing it lol

who jokingly moves in for the kiss when someone asks if they’re a couple: Sabine, of course. She's such an agent of chaos. It's not funny to anyone though because they know Kurt is gay.

who has to bust or bail the other out of jail: Kurt is running out of his allowance at a certain point. It's gotten to the point where he refuses to help her and lets her stew in jail for the night.

who gives the other advice/comfort about dating issues: They do it both equally. Sabine is begging Kurt to let Blaine go by the time he graduates and Kurt is begging Sabine to just go for Sam and stop holding herself back.

who shamelessly cheats at games by reaching over to cover the other’s eyes: Kurt, surprisingly. But only with games he actually knows how to play, so card and board games. When it comes to video games he's way out of his depth.

who immediately calls dibs on the top bunk: Sabine!!! She loves sleeping in the top bunk.

who starts and who wins the pillow fights: Sabine starts and finishes them, and Kurt is too benevolent.

who says “your pants would look better on their floor” to the other’s potential crush: Sabine. It's how she introduced Kurt and Wyatt to each other.

Update

We know things have been pretty quiet around here, especially given repeated promises of "developments soon!" The good news is we're at the point where comic pages are starting to get finished! They aren't ready to show in full yet, but you can expect some more previews and stuff soon. At the moment we're going for maximum quality for the first introductory chapter. It's taking some time because we're really polishing up the art and showing off the best we can do. We're hoping to get those pages ready to release to the public in the early weeks of 2024. After that, we're going to be reassessing what the best way to proceed will be based on the audience response. There's... quite a lot of ways that could turn out. We might end up going ahead with the very occasional highly polished updates, or perhaps more frequent ones but with rougher art. We might have to look at putting the story out there in a different form entirely, such as short written chapters with an accompanying illustration or two. (Hell, we've even thrown about the idea of a visual novel!) There's a lot of uncertainty about the future of BotP but we are determined to continue it as best we can.

Didn’t wanna b’lieve it. B’lieve him. That night, I assured meself that Gov. Lumator had procured my portrait as oracle trickery. But as time went, I began ta trust him. I knew I shouldn’t, but... “Gov. Lumator?” “Speak.” “That lady in the portrait...the one ya showed me back at the farm. Who...is she? I know ya said she was a priestess and all, but...what does it hafta do with me?” Gov. Lumator sighed. His eyes hardened as he touched his chin. Then, realizin he didn’t have a beard no more, he brought his hand ta his hair. As he ruffled it, he turned his eyes from us. “The academy doth hold the belief that thou art the reincarnation of Sacrona Aemma.” I furrowed my brow and shook my head. That name didn’t mean nothin ta me. But the look on Gov. Lumator’s face was solemn and heavy. The air ‘bout him was so somber that all other conversation died. Now everyone’s focus was on us.
