my pieces for @hkhallowzine
the Kingdom's Edge illustration was so much work, but it was very rewarding. and the Stag drawing is spot art that accompanies @vulturereyy's writing

A little nosk scampers into the party just in time...
Had this idea since the Nosk Party Collab was announced, but I'm glad I was able to get it out in time!
This is my little Boofly nosk, who doesn't... Quite seem as hostile as most. It's short, stubby, and dwells in Kingdom's Edge, perhaps even thriving on the shed skin of the Pale Wyrm like fish flakes from hell. The Boofly Nosk is an ambush predator, mimicking a distressed boofly calf while the rest of its body lays submerged or hidden away in a cozy crevice. This nosk prefers to hunt down gentle giants (though calling it a real 'hunt' is probably a stretch....)
Its head and torso can inflate and deflate as needed to assist with floating in either liquid or staying airborne. They also boast a thicker shell than most of their kind, able to withstand the burning of acid for long enough to lure a boofly sow down to its demise.
Rumors from travelers say it can also store said acid in it's torso and launch it in a fairly precise spit to bring down prey...
Here are the original concepts I had all the way back when the party was announced :> Thanks @flame-shadow and @fly-sky-high-bug-games for hosting!! This was a fun little exercise for a boss I admittedly don't think a ton about. I have been converted into a nosk truther.

Traditional foods of Hallownest
So I just made Christmas cookies I can’t eat yet and my hunger is infinite. Hence this mess.
Boofly steaks: These are pretty much what they sound like, I feel like Booflies were essentially the cows of Hallownest. The quality of a Boofly steak is determined with how fatty it is, fattier cuts display very nice marbling. These are actually more savory in flavor than regular steaks and have a slightly more gelatinous/softer texture. Generally Boofly steaks will be served with lake-pearls(a macro algae native to the blue lake that has a salty and slightly sour flavor.
Aspid stew: this is a stew that’s made from the bottom half of and aspid(primal aspids have a much different flavor and are far less popular). Recipe is as follows
Carve up your aspid, start by removing the upper thorax and cleaning the intestines of any waste. Let the aspid drain some of its hemolyph and other juices into a jar.
Drain the acid from the aspids lower thorax, take care to entirely remove the acid glands. Store the acid in a chilled glass or ceramic jar for later.
finely mince some bitter root(a root native to the crossroads that tastes very sweet when boiled), and grind up some hyacinth flower petals, roughly a cupful of each will do.
Cut 2-3 tik-tik into fine strips(crawlids are an acceptable but inferior alternative) and lightly dust it with salt and soak in the juices from the aspid for about 35 minutes
Take the bottom half of the aspid and lightly bread the insides, once a small layer of breading is present pour in some water along with your bitter root and petals. Set this over a heat source for roughly an hour to ensure the bitterroot is thoroughly boiled.
Lightly sear the tik-tik meat and aspid meat before adding it to the stew, wait 20 minutes for it to cook.
Now that we’ve assembled most of our dish the most important part is up next. Because we chilled the aspid acid it should have taken on a gelatinous texture, mix this into any remaining aspid hemolyph and pour it into our stew. This should add a nice sharpness to the dish
Stir until the consistency is somewhere around that of a scrambled maskfly egg.
A traditional breakfast:
Scrambled maskfly eggs(they end up being close to an uncooked egg yolk in consistency) they’re generally something that is slurped up like a drink
Gruzzer bacon: this kinda tends to come in thicker slices than our bacon, it’s great when paired with a light drizzle of diluted aspid acid. Very very fatty, heavy umami flavor witha bite of saltiness.
Mashed crawlid balls: these are mashed up and thoroughly cooked crawlid meat mixed with assorted spices from greenpath and generally have a hollow center so juices from the meat can collect.
A cup of Gruzzer mead: Basically just a mix of gruzzer hemolymph and the pressed juices of a gulka. It has a very refreshing bite to it and a consistency like eggnog.
A rare delicacy: Aluba caviar, generally this is served in the shell of a shadow crawler(throughly cured and seasoned, generally for several months to ensure there’s no residual void) with a side of bioluminescent mushrooms exported from deepnest. This is generally a meal only reserved for the upper castes.
Finally: Rancid eggs can be cured and fermented into a cultural delicacy much like that one Icelandic shark dish. Suffice to say most bugs find this disgusting. The Pale king however thoroughly enjoy it, though this not public knowledge. It’s kinda his guilt pleasure along with chocolate (which is fatal or otherwise detrimental to nearly all other insects hence him being the only one eating it).
I’m definitely gonna do a part two for this once I write up some other recipes. Hopefully ones I put more thought into.

a crisis of complexion
Or, a short drabble in which a very distracted Pale King has to confront one of the difficulties of hybrid parenthood that he'd seen on the horizon since before the Deepnest Queen's clutch was even laid. Even then, he manages to botch it up in the only way he can- by being himself.
(Set in the Wasteland Wanderers AU, a scenario where PK carried Hornet's egg, but was forced to flee to the wastes after a premature attack from the Radiance made it impossible for him to stay in Hallownest. The main, self-indulgent focus of the AU is on PK living as his ancestors might, and rearing Hornet as a wyrm would, despite his own misgivings.)
.
"Baba?"
The Pale Wyrm blinked, raising his head from his meal to stare back at his daughter, gazing at him from across the den. Her claws glimmered with soul-rich silk, shards of sharpened carapace twined with it to create a half-formed shuriken, but her gaze was focused on the husk in his claws, chelicerae scrunched in thought. "Why can you eat the rotting meat, but I can't?"
Ah. He should have known this day would come- it had been looming on the horizon since he'd first had the presence of mind to begin worrying over her egg, but the visions that his foresight had granted him had been...divisive, to say the least. He had decided to put those thoughts aside to focus on more pressing matters, but time had snuck up on him all the same, and now he was left unarmed, jowls full of days-old boofly that had commanded his attention instead of his daughter's distant frown.
He licked the dripping gore off his fangs while he thought of a reply, not missing the way that his hatchling's mouthparts scrunched in disgust. It was a difference between them that she surely hadn't missed either, and so he decided to opt for the simplest answer before she could have a chance to change the subject. "It is because I am a full wyrm, and you are not. If I had bred with one of my kind, then you would be able to eat anything just as I, but that is not the case with you. Your mother was a spider, and spiders are hunters. They cannot eat anything but fresh-kill."
(In truth, she likely could digest old flesh, but he hadn't been willing to let her try. It felt like it was only yesterday that her venom had finally grown strong enough for her to eat without him first softening the meat, and he hadn't the heart to leave the nest to starve her into eating old kills, like his mother had done to him.)
(She was not a wyrm, like he was. She did not need to learn how to manage her hunger, to grow content with the emptiness inside of him like he had done when he was her age.)
Wild-heart-sharp-fang’s face scrunched even further. Soon, she would grow to the age where she would shed her hatchling name, and take on the one that the bee queen had given to her, in a future that no longer existed. Still, he would honour the spider queen's wishes, if only to prevent his inevitable dismemberment upon their return. If she was there when they returned. “We haven’t hunted spiders before. Why was my mother a spider, when we eat anything that is not like us?”
Ah, the pitfalls of growing up away from civilization. The Pale King exhaled slowly, careful not to let his breath waft in her direction, and tried to structure a response that would make sense to her. It was difficult, for it was a dilemma that he himself had faced for centuries- that fine balance between the desire to protect those below them, and to view them as little more than prey, fresh for the slaughter. “They are one of the civilized races, the ones that I have spoken of to you before. We do not hunt them, because they do not exist where we roam. Only wyrms and feederbugs pass by our home.”
He scraped a claw along the underside of the beetle’s carapace, parting it easily from the meat. It came away slick, dripping with juices, but he tolerated its greasy cling; the carapace, when cleaned and dried, would make for an excellent storage bowl, and the flesh that remained was sweet and soft. “I have told you about your mother. That should be reason enough to understand why I did not hunt her. One of such intimidating stature should be given respect. She may not have been a wyrm, like me, but that did not mean that her bite was any less sharp, or her territory-claim any less strong. Now tell me- what of my tales of her do you remember most?”
“She was a great queen.” Wild-heart’s voice was soft, but the frown still lingered on her face. “Like you were a great king, even though they’re really just the same thing in the end. Is that why I have venom, then, and you don’t? And why I can jump higher than you can, but don’t have wings?”
“That is a correct assumption, child.” A stir of warmth in his chest- pride. His daughter was already fierce and quick, but it was her intellect that he was most proud of- that cunning mind would serve her well in the days ahead. If only she was in Hallownest, where he would have tutors and watchers aplenty to teach her all the knowledge she needed to rule…here, all he could do was tell her stories of the life that she had lost, and hope that it was enough to keep the wild from swallowing her whole. “We differ for many reasons. In some cases, this causes problems- like you wanting to chase our meals, while I prefer to wait for them to pass by so that I might ambush them instead. But in many cases, this is an advantage. Your mother desired for you to have the traits of both wyrm and spider, and you are an excellent presentation of them both.”
She nodded, but was silent, her eyes fixed on the thread between her claws. He recognized this as her time for processing the information, and returned to his meal, scraping the shell of the beetle with his mandibles while he sunk his claws into the sandy earth to clean them. He would have to bring the actual shell to the surface to clean out the remains of the meat and buff the carapace into something usable, but he could have Wild-heart- Hornet, he had to get used to her adult name before he made her hatchling-name a habit she would not outgrow- do that for him. They were getting low on fresh meat, and while her aim had gotten better, she was still not yet strong enough to take down prey large enough for them both-
In a small voice, she asked, “Do you want me to be different?"
The world came to a screeching halt. He froze, and found his tongue frozen as well. A million different futures branched out before him, but his mind was caught in the past, staring out before a million other possibilities that had slipped between his fingers like so many meager grains of sand.
Corpses in the Abyss. Broken masks, shattered eggshells. Children, dead by the millions.
His children. His lover's children. Heirs of Hallownest all, taken first by void and then by death. Dead twice, because of him.
Spider fangs flashing in the dark. Whispered promises dripping with venom, a blood pact sealed with the blessing of his lady and the tactical hunger that plagued every wyrm with territory ripe for them to snatch. He had quenched that hunger with offerings of silk and song, but still…
Eggs in his womb. Not the dead weights of the dud clutches he'd grown used to, but kindled. Alive, as his others were not, born from a pact that he held no love for.
Agony in the Wastelands, the smell of his own blood and fluids thick in the air, and the terrifying, soul-rendering realization that no matter what happened, no matter the pain and the loneliness that would come from a life of hardship, he would take it all in exchange for just one of his hatchlings surviving. Centuries of pain and torment buried away, ignored for the greater good of a people abandoned, all uprooted and thrown into his face while he groveled like an animal in the pangs of labor.
She had been the only one who had survived.
"...You are exactly as you need to be," he finally whispered, and tried not to look at the way she stared down at her lap, as if his moment of silence was damning enough. She was his. He loved her. He loved her selfishly, this misbegotten wedlock-child who was conceived only for political gain. and he could not say it. "What I want was, and always has been, irrelevant. The flow of your fate, influenced as it is by my presence, should not be mine to command. Nor should I make demands of it."
She was silent for a while, as he had been. Then she nodded, gathered up the shards of her shuriken, and crawled quietly up through the winding tunnel leading to the outside, towards the fading sunlight. Whether or not his words had touched her, he could not say- she was his daughter as much as Herrah's, a child, not a hatchling, and her heart would never again be worn so readily on her sleeve.
He closed his eyes, coiled up tight against the cool darkness of the burrow he'd made for them, and waited for the pain in his heart to pass him by. Then, with a beleaguered sigh, he picked up the carapace plates from the remnants of their meal, and set to scrubbing them free of flesh.
Maybe if he scoured them long enough, dug his talons in deep enough, the sands would swallow him too.

random hc ask: some ppl think of some of the enemies like pets. ex., hollow getting a pet tiktik (which i happen 2 love). got any sort of bug pet hk headcanon?
my thoughts go to god tamer first! she's like the only example of anyone canonically having a pet that i can think of so i'd springboard off there and say Alright Let's Talk Sapience First
[feel free to skip to the readmore if you already have a solid idea of what's sapient and what's not. i doubt i'm saying anything other people haven't already picked up on]
we know the dream nail picks up thoughts of things like tiktiks and they display as words even if they're not obviously an upright walking talking bug, so i'm voting anything with god tamer's beast's dream nail dialogue set:
Tumblr media
is probably petworthy. as in, not Some Guy. animal tier intelligence i guess.
according to the wiki this exact dialogue set applies to:
Tiktiks, Vengeflies, Crawlids, Gruzzers, Goam, all Aspids, Mosscreeps, Mossflies, Moss Chargers, Squits, Obbles, Durandoo/Duranda, Aluba, Ambloom, Fungling, Fungoon, Pilflips, Belflies, certain Flukes, Crystal Crawlers/Hunters, Glimbacks, Dirtcarvers, Dirtcarver Hatchlings, Garpedes, Corpse Creepers, Deeplings, Deephunters, Lesser Mawleks, Mawlurks, Infected Balloons, Booflies, Primal Aspids, [...]
i can't continue this list it's going to take me all day. you get the gist. there are a Lot of enemies that share the "probably not a sapient person" dreamnail pool. will be leaning heavily on that for What Can Safely Be Written As A Pet Without It Getting Too Weird
we probably can't include Flukes even though they also share the dialogue pool, because they're implied to grow into Flukemon which have separate dialogue and an obviously-sapient NPC (Fluke Hermit) so disregard those. there are also likely other exceptions i haven't covered so please use your head and apply a liberal pinch of salt.
we CAN probably include Vengefly King, Gruz Mother, and Brooding Mawlek since while their DN dialogue is different to their children it still doesn't seem to imply any higher-functioning thought than basic instinct, just a Big Parent Of The Same Thing
ok so individual character/pet ideas behind the cut bc i think this is a rly funny and charming thing to look at
zote. sorry he's first he's the funniest
zote is not one of those guys who would get a Big Dog thinking it makes him look cool and intimidating. he is the guy who puts a collar on a fucking coyote and thinks it makes him look cool and intimidating until it bites him in the dick.
it doesn't happen often, but sometimes he drags something back to Dirtmouth that is foaming at the jaws and insists it's his new faithful pet/steed that obeys his every command and will tear his enemies to pieces. it starts with a vengefly that he boasts about while it is actively chewing on his arm. it escalates from there.
the one thing preventing these beasts from tearing him to pieces is hornet coming in to truss up/confiscate the damn things before they can do any damage to the town
myla.
myla is familiar with glimbacks! she's a miner by trade even if she didn't come from hallownest originally, and i think these things are used as pit ponies in a lot of places. they're big sturdy beasts of burden that can be made to drag carts and carry heavy tools and they're described as "docile and slow" - no sudden movements and take well to handling.
she's never owned one but a living post-infection myla could adopt one of the surviving glimbacks from crystal peak and just kind of keep it like one keeps a rescue horse. horsegirl novel starring myla
cornifer & iselda.
they're married and do not currently have any kids for whatever reason - totally valid, this says nothing about them. however i do think it would be cute they get a dog instead and that's their placeholder baby. they get a mossfly and iselda spoils it with treats and it keeps her company while cornifer is gone. cornifer sometimes takes it for LONG WALKS (doesn't come back for 3 days).
sometimes they have that awkward moment where they're walking it in dirtmouth and it pees on something and they just have to smile and wave like "what can you do haha" while elderbug looks in in supreme disapproval because he has never owned a pet in his life and can't they just stop it from peeing there :/
millibelle.
owner of a yappy dog type crawlid, full-on grandma style. it has a solid shell like she does isn't that cute! she babytalks it and calls it sugarplum or whatever and insists it could never do a thing wrong in its life. it will savage your hand if anyone else tries to pet it.
emilitia.
she does not give a shit about anything that she thinks she'll outlast. Which Is Everything. however, millibelle has a crawlid, and boasts about it, and emilitia can't have that. she gets a tiktik in retaliation and it is exactly like a handbag chihuahua. hornet may or may not have to confiscate this one for the tiktik's sake
hornet.
everything still alive in the kingdom is under her protection, even if it bites. she is ambivalent to their responses to her. (they like her. when she comes back from pharloom playing silk music they like her even more)
lemm.
anti-pet person. i'm so fucking sorry. you bring a single thing into his shop that could pee or chew or scratch or leave tracks and he is going to kick up such a fuss. that said: he would have liked to feed maskflies in the park like your typical old man feeds pigeons

Foods in Hallownest:
I don't know why I'm putting much thought into it but after writing a fic and writing a scene where two bugs are eating, and I kept writing what I think would be the Hallownest equivalent of some foods and what would even be eaten.
Crops:
I think that pretty much any fruit or vegetable that could be grown in most climates could be grown in Hallownest. For example: apples, pears, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, corn, ect. Pretty much anything that could be grown in the Midwest. Most of the crops are grown in Greenpath though some places can grow other stuff as well. Howling Cliffs could absolutely grow potatoes as potatoes like to grow everywhere. Dirtmouth could also grow potatoes along with wheat as soil in Dirtmouth is a bit better and it's less windy there. Ismas Grove and Queens Gardens grow special herbs used for medicines.
Meats:
Now figuring out what meats are eaten is a bit weird as bugs would be eating bugs but they aren't eating sentient bugs, but it's also not really canablism. Anyways here are bugs that would be eaten in Hallownest:
-tic tics
-crawlids
-aspids(not common as aspids are hard to cook. So pretty much the Hallownest equivalent to a pufferfish)
-Duranda
-mosscreeps(very unpopular as it is the Hallownest equivalent to eating a dog)
-vengflies
-Mawlk(not common and is equivalent to eating elk)
There are some location specific meats and meats that are only eaten on one location:
-dirt carver&hatchers(Deepnest)
-Garpede(Deepnest)
There are also some foods that are taken from other locations and hunted and are eaten by guards, office officials, or used for storage and rations:
-Hopper(kingdoms edge)
-Boofly(Kingdoms edge)
The only thing I can't really fit in is how Fungal Wastes fits into all of this as the Mantis Tribe is there and they are the only enemy in that section that is actually a bug. Everything else in that section is fungal based and mantises are carnivores. Sure they could eat their mate after doing it, but they aren't doing that often. My guess is that the Mantises travel to Deepnest(Illegally), or Greenpath to hunt.
