Demanding
Whether it’s chaos in the world around us or chaos in our own lives, it’s all too easy to get caught up in it.
By caught up, I don’t mean the level of engagement we need to navigate our lives. What I’m referring to is something more intense. A lot more intense. More like an unhealthy fixation on the chaos.
Where we let the chaos suck all the air out of the room. And the chaos itself becomes our focus.
When that happens to us, the odds of falling into “demanding-answers-from-God” mode is just about 100%.
The thing is, when we’re in “demanding-answers-from-God” mode, the odds of us being frustrated are also just about 100%.
Because, while God will give us answers (God always does), the odds of them being both the answers we want and on our schedule are pretty dim.
Why? Because God knows us.
God knows that if He told us exactly what we we’re headed into. How hard it’s going to hit us. How much effort it’s going to take. A lot of us would take a pass. I’m one of them.
The thing is, the very moment that we are tempted to drop into “demanding-answers-from-God” mode, that’s the very moment that we need to trust God the most.
It’s one of the reasons why God can be frustratingly silent when we start demanding. Because God knows us. God knows that in those moments, the last thing we need is more explanations and more information.
What we really need is to trust God. And take the next step.
The amazing thing? What God does next.
If we have the courage to trust Him. And actually do take the next step.
Bob Goff puts it this way, “Sometimes God is confidently quiet. He doesn’t give us more explanations. He knows that we don’t need more words of instruction. The moment we take even a tiny shuffle forward, what God is already thinking is this: ‘I love you. You’ve got this. You know enough.’”
