The audience consists of just a single strange family — mother, father and daughter — seated at the ringside. Although hindered by the treacherous Cook, the Doctor eventually discovers that the Circus hides a terrible secret: the family are in reality the Gods of Ragnarok, powerful creatures with an insatiable craving for entertainment who invariably destroy those who fail to please them.

With Ace's help, the Doctor ends the gods' influence on Segonax and returns the circus to the control of its original owners.

Daylight

Harry said Daylight is about infatuation with troubled things. He sings about a long distance relationship where his muse, to me Taylor, keeps him at a distance, he wants to be with them and wants more than his muse gives him. In a theme for his work at that time Harry sings of cocaine, travelling the world and romantic encounters but he really just wants his muse to love him back. Yet knowing they keep him at a distance Harry can't help wanting to be with them.

The lyric video has Sunflowers with their heads are dropped :( this happens when they don’t have water, a reference to Taylor Swifts Clean (When the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst) and Sunflower Vol 6.

Title and Track list

Daylight is also the name of the last song on Taylor Swift's album Lover. It was originally the title track, and Taylor hinted at it in the Red Liner notes while she was still dating Harry. Taylor’s Daylight is about true love, the last sung verse of Taylors Daylight is [love] "it's golden like daylight". Harry then opened Fine Line with Golden. Daylight is track 5 of Harry's House.

"Daylight was quite an early song on the album, it's one of my favourites and it was kind of a stream of consciousness writing that happened kind of late. It was one of those songs that very much captures a moment of what was happening in the studio. We were kind of all talking about going to bed and then we started this song and it felt like if we go to bed and do it tomorrow it's not going to be the same as it would be if we finished it now. So you found a way to stay up. I think sometimes there are things that can feel like we have to find a way to finish this now. We did an all nighter, finished it and went out the beach to watch the sun come up and it was a nice moment of this album." Stern 'this is about some woman that didn't pay attention to you. He reads the line with cocaine before asking. There is a frustration in this song' Harry confirms it is about one woman. And responds "I think it is kind of like an infatuation with chasing troubled things"

Stern continues, 'You know Taylor Swift has a song called Daylight, maybe she's the girl in the thing?' To which Harry says "here we go, mm hm." and looks away. Stern, seeing the answer, offers, 'or am I reading too much into it.' which Harry agrees with, Stern comments on his smile Harry adds "You know I'd love to tell you that your spot on, but I can't" smiles and exchanges a knowing look with Mitch. Call me as convinced as Stern, what Harry said was he couldn't confirm that, especially after Stern read the cocaine line.

To Zane Lowe Harry (41 mins) told a similar story about staying up to complete it and told the surfing/song writing metaphor. Zane approached it along with As it Was and Grapejuice as a suite he sees as expressing pain and vice dependency. Harry moved on to talk about As It Was.

Timeline

Harry was in LA promoting Fine Line when the COVID travel ban was introduced 17 March 2020. Harry told Zane Lowe (24 Mins) he stayed home for 6 weeks then booked and went to Shangri-la studio to record. LNT, Daylight, Keep Driving and Sushi were in this group, to Stern and Lowe he said Daylight was one of the first. That places these songs between 28 April 2020 and 18 July 2020 (when Harry was back in the UK) Daylight at the earlier end of that time. The leaked too much sauce was recorded and Taylor wrote Folklore in that period also. See 2020 timeline.

Live Performances

Daylight was the 4th song on the Love on Tour Setlist, once Harry's House was released. Harry replaced it with Stockholm Syndrome for 18 shows from 18 May 2023, appearing in a handful of shows in June and July. The only shows with both were Wembley and the last show.

The tour visuals have a blue bird flying between LA and London. Harry also had a cloud background. Showing LA rather than NY is interesting when the song mentions NY.

What is the Bluebird Reference about

Bluebirds appeared in the opening to Love on Tour and may refer to:

Charles Bukowski's has a poem Bluebird, Harry is read Bukowski books and poems on stage. In the poem, the bird is a metaphor for Bukowski's emotions, articulated that he weeps in private. He keeps it hidden with whiskey to protect his image that sells books of misogynistic poetry, he opposes weeping with strength and cleverness. If Harry is referencing this, this is it is consistent with the reference to Harry's own work:

In "If I could Fly" Harry shared his vulnerability with his muse for their eyes only and hoped they would not run from him. In this same HH recording period, Harry has a series of songs that describe a rockstar lifestyle, referring to choking and cocaine, (Daylight, Keep Driving and (leaked) Too Much Sauce and (leaked) Make My Day) but that Harry actually just wishes his muse reciprocated his feelings and wanted to settle down and be happy.

When she was 14 Taylor Swift's was given her first record deal and performed at a writers night at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. She talks about it in this video when she returned to the cafe, there are photos of her 2004 performance with Scott Borchetta in the audience. The cafe has a chair with a plaque she included in the Taymoji set. Harry would have known this, however the Grammy museum also covered when she played there in 2018. Taylor also had a bluebird in the WANGBT video and on 17 June 2023 uploaded a single image to youtube with bluebirds promoting Eras in Mexico. This was a few weeks before Harry’s daylight MV was released.

This link lists songs about bluebirds. I think Paul McCartney's "Bluebird" and Joe Ely's "If you were a Bluebird" are both plausible.

In Summary I think the bluebird is a metaphor for Harry's inner feelings that he is someone who loves and wants to be loved back. He sees his rockstar trappings are a salve, not a life goal.

Lyrics

The opening verse expresses the frustration Stern referred to. Harry's muse and he are apart now, and he is missing them, almost indigently hoping they miss him too, yet he cares, he’s reading their horoscope. This sounds to me like a disagreement or unsatisfying parting and Harry wants to be with them.

I hear the first lines as a double meaning:

Harry is high (on the roof, nose-bleeding) but his muse is higher (in the sky).

his muse has also now flown away in their own airplane seat and left him waiting - they are separated by distance.

'Nose bleeding, looking for life' reminds me of Kiwi "Holland Tunnel for a nose, it's always backed up" and Satellite's name and "You got a new life". "Out there" and the tour visuals showing LA rather also remind me of Satellite's 'L.A. Mood'.

In the music video here Harry climbs down from a ladder to the sky, which reminds me of Story of My Life's "But, baby, runnin' after you is like chasin' the clouds". Clouds appear in several of their videos, including Lavender Haze, where, on the Eras tour, Taylor climbs up a ladder to one:

If I was a bluebird, I would fly to you You'd be the spoon Dip you in honey so I could be sticking to you

To me, this lyric is most reminiscent of Harry's One Direction song, If I Could Fly and it has the similar meaning, Harry is separated from his muse and wishes he could fly home to them. While If I could fly is about sharing vulnerability and hoping they don't run from him, in Daylight his muse keeping him at a distance.

I love dip you in honey so I could be sticking to you, it's adorable and bittersweet and very Harry. Bittersweet because Harry wants to be with his muse, who at the start of the song was not listening to him and he was hoping was missing him. He wants to spend all his time with them and he doesn’t feel that is reciprocated.

In this part of the video, the muse in Red (Taylor's colour) takes shots at him (songs, antics in media) he is resigned that it may kill him, his muse gives a flirting smile when it doesn't. Harry then walks past muses in pink with a bored look. A Grapejuice reference "I'm so over whites and pinks" Harry only has eyes for his 'old and Red' muse, even though they enjoy taking shots at him.

Daylight, you got me cursing the daylight (ooh) Daylight, you got me cursing the daylight (ooh) Daylight, you got me calling at all times (ooh) Ain't gonna sleep 'til the daylight (ooh)

This lyric reminds me of Harry talking about staying up to finish the song, but also he's staying up late night talking and wanting to be with his muse all the time. Calling at all times could be a muse on a different timezone, or maybe one he can't keep from.

In the video Harry is trying to get to his muse, clowns (read: us) are in the way. He cries and we are on his side, because we are! Harry is commenting on fans getting in the way of his love. Sorry Harry. He is too loud for his muse dressed as Miss Americana (& the Heartbreak Prince) who leaves. This scene reminds me of Story of my life "holding on too tight"

Out of New York, I'm on the comedown speed We're on bicycles, saying, "There's life out there" You got the antidote, I'll take one to go, go, please Get the picture, cut out my middle You ain't got time for me right now

This verse is similar to the first, Harry is a parting from his muse, he feels incomplete when they are apart, but his muse is keeping him at a distance. The verse has similarities to several of Harry's songs:

Out of NY, comedown speed, I hear as Harry leaving NY and coming down, or feeling sad to be away from his muse.

Harry does refer to Bikes in Matilda, however to me, where Harry rides a penny farthing here in the video emphasises that this is a winding wheel reference. The spinning and 'life out there' also remind me of Satellite again. In the first verse Harry was looking for life out there and he has now found it.

Antidote is also in Golden "I can feel you take control (I can feel you take control) / Of who I am, and all I've ever known Lovin' you's the antidote", and Ever Since New York "Choose your words 'cause there's no antidote" a Medicine is also similar to an antidote. Also in End of the Day "Twenty minutes later, wound up in the hospital / The priest thinks it's the devil, my mum thinks it's the flu / But, girl, it's only you" Here Harry takes one to go because he's parting from his muse.

Finally, the last 2 lines are also reminiscent of Satellite "(Spinning out, waiting for ya) / I'm in an L.A. Mood / I don't wanna talk to you/ She said, "Give me a day or two"

As we prepare for the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards, Backstage is breaking down this year’s film and television ensemble work for your consideration.

“Belfast” is both a coming-of-age story and a slice of politically resonant history. The film is set in the titular Northern Irish town in the late 1960s, as seen through the eyes of young Buddy (played by a precocious Jude Hill). Writer-director Kenneth Branagh has called it his most personal film yet; it’s also one of the year’s best.

Woven into the movie’s fabric is that most awe-inspiring of childlike wonders: the magic of the performing arts. Buddy and his family visit the cinema, turn on the telly, or watch “A Christmas Carol” onstage and are transfixed by what they see. As the black-and-white film’s only color moments, these flashes of entertainment evoke cherished childhood memories and remind us why we go to movies like this one. Connecting his specific story to the audience’s own desire for escapism allows Branagh to lean into cinematic flourishes even while creating a biographical piece.

Likewise, his actors get the best of both worlds. They immerse themselves in precise period details and take a near-documentarian approach to their characters’ real-world counterparts, but they also shine like the charismatic movie stars they are. As Buddy’s parents, Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan are this story’s heroes—and they look the part. Rather than dimming her classic screen-siren looks or his square-jawed visage, Branagh lets their beauty dazzle us.

Dornan has never been better, playing a tough-yet-adoring father; every scene opposite his onscreen sons, played by Hill and Lewis McAskie, is a study in fierce protectiveness. Given that the film is set amid the 1969 Troubles, a moment late in the story when Dornan grabs a mic and sings feels all the more uplifting and powerful. As ideological and then literal battle lines are drawn between Protestants and Catholics, the film’s tight-knit family are our way into understanding this town as their home—and how its escalating violence is tarnishing such purity.

Balfe’s ability to make heavy emotions feel genuine rather than melodramatic is put to note-perfect use. She avoids “worrying mother” cliches as the family matriarch, painting a three-dimensional portrait of a woman preoccupied with a question that resonates with immigrant families to this day: Stay or flee? Her answer, in the form of a tour de force monologue directed at Dornan, is what guides us through this story.

Two of today’s most accomplished character actors, meanwhile, bring Buddy’s grandparents to life. Judi Dench proves again that she’s the quintessential supporting performer, delivering the film’s most poignant line. “You can’t get to Shangri-La from Belfast,” she mutters, partly to herself, partly to her grandson, and partly to us, her enraptured audience. As Buddy’s grandfather, Ciarán Hinds is all gruff warmth and cheekiness, a persona he inhabits brilliantly. What takes his delivery to the next level is the way he hangs on every word from Dench, broadcasting so clearly that she is the love of his life. It’s a lesson on how to act in the moment.

Watching such an ensemble convey a communal upbringing and a sense of belonging to their city’s streets, you get the sense that these actors are bringing their personal histories to their performances. Branagh has enabled this with the film’s specific-yet-universal conceit: His actors can project their own experiences with their own families in their own homes onto the screen. The same goes for audiences, sitting in a dark movie theater, transported away from today’s troubles through the magic of storytelling.

Eric Friedl/Goner Records Update

Alongside Zac Ives, Eric Friedl is the co-owner of Goner Records. He also plays in The Oblivians and True Sons of Thunder.

           Located in Memphis, Tennessee, Goner operates as both a record label and storefront. Like Shangri-La, Goner Records has been a Memphis institution since the storefront’s opening in 2004. Every year, Goner hosts Gonerfest—a still-vibrant music festival stretching several days. For those outside of Memphis, Goner’s frequently updated online store is a hub for what’s new in esoteric music. The site’s message board is a place to get updates on touring bands, small labels’ releases and anything else music related.

           Like countless small businesses, Goner has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The storefront has been closed since March 16. I caught up with Friedl to talk about how Goner’s coping with these changes and what their plans are for the future. Goner is and hopefully will remain an important part of independent music’s infrastructure.

Ryan: How’s everyone at Goner doing?

Eric: We’re good. But like everyone, we’ve fallen into a freefall. Locally, we’ve been doing door deliveries. People have been stopping by to pick up records. We’ve had some success selling online. If we really scale back and don’t spend anything for a minute, we can hang on for a little while. We might have to lay off our staff; have folks go on unemployment. Goner would be reduced to just me and Zac (Ives) as the owners. We could limp through it that way. We’re trying to figure it out.    

Ryan: Like most small businesses in America, Goner’s storefront is closed. How are these alternative strategies like doing door deliveries and having folks stop by to pick up records working?

Eric: One of our regulars just can’t stop buying records. He’ll call me up in the morning—I guess he’s unaccustomed to looking at the site—and I’ll tell him what’s come in. He’ll respond, “Oh, man, I’ve got to get that album.” We then pack his records and he comes by to grab them. We’ve delivered a few records off locally. It’s super informal. But every little bit counts. People have been helping out. It’s been great.  

Ryan: You had mentioned to me a couple of months ago that you were going to relaunch the Goner website. While the COVID-19 pandemic and economic meltdown have been an unmitigated disaster, it was at least fortuitous timing.

Eric: We were getting ready to launch the site when the coronavirus hit. We wanted to fine-tune it a little more and add some things. But once it became imperative that we be able to sell stuff online, we said, “Screw it. Here it is. We’ll fix it as we go.”

Ryan: I went to buy the Aquarium Blood LP you had recently released and it took me to a Bandcamp site initially.

Eric: (laughs) It really is a matter of working out the kinks as we go.

Ryan: While everyone’s situation has changed, in some ways Goner wasn’t a case of just punching a timeclock. Record stores are hubs and hangouts for people. When Trailer Space closed down in Austin, it was a significant loss.

Eric: It is weird. We definitely weren’t a Trailer Space-style of hangout, but people on their regular circuit would stop by and explore the used bin. On weekends, we had a big crew of normal folks buying classic rock albums. There’s absolutely no way to sell that stuff online. We were stocked for those folks and that side of the business completely died. We had a bunch of really cool events coming up. You feel like you’re right in the middle of things and then you’re isolated. That was sort of my idea with doing these video check-ins. I sent out requests for people to give us video updates. I want to show people that we’re still in this. Facebook just makes us feel like we’re on our own little islands, which we really are now. We’re isolated from one another. It doesn’t have that sense of community that you can get from other places online. We’re just hoping to keep people’s spirits up as we go forward into the unknown.

Ryan: That’s a good point. Used bins are the home of the “five-dollar record,” although I’m unsure what people are selling them for now. You’re not going to sell used copies of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars or a Led Zeppelin record online. They’re so ubiquitous that it doesn’t make much sense. However, they’re perfect for a store.

Eric: Sure. People would walk in and buy’em. We’ve had people call up and ask, “Do you have this Allman Brothers record? You do. Great, I’ll pick it up.” They can buy it on eBay. They can buy it on Discogs. But because they live locally, they can stop by the shop, purchase it, and listen to it this afternoon. It still works. The store sold a lot of meat-and-potatoes rock ‘n’ roll records. We needed that balance between selling weird, underground rock records and classic rock albums.

Ryan: Byrds, Bread and Toto records all at the same place without the shipping price and wait.  

Eric: It’s awesome. There is a little bit of that at the store. Speaking of which, if anyone out there is looking for a Sister Sledge record, we’ve got it! Call us up.  

Ryan: Talking about the atomization associated with Facebook—I think of the site’s sort of opposites. Terminal Boredom’s message board was a great place for likeminded people to share ideas about music. The Goner message board, which has been revamped, was a predecessor of sorts to Terminal’s board.

Eric: Yeah. Even for me, it’s frustrating to use the Goner board. It’s such a dinosaur. It kept chugging along for years. We need to tweak it and make it more functional. It’s hard to envision people staying on it now like they used to. But it is there, and it was a big hub for people who were into underground stuff. Terminal Boredom was too. I always felt comfortable reading that stuff up until a point. The squabbles got to be a bit much and I’d lose track of what was going on. Anyway, check out the Goner board!

Ryan: For bedroom record labels like ours (Spacecase), you could sell 15 titles almost right away by going on those boards. And you didn’t need to pay a public relations company a couple grand to do it.

Eric: You were getting your records in front of the right people.

Ryan: Beyond COVID-19 and the global economic meltdown, in our milieu we had Apollo Masters burn down a couple months ago. I use Musicol out in Columbus, Ohio, and I know they’re going to be closed for at least a few weeks. Did the Goner label have anything in the works that’s been put on hold?

Eric: The Bloodshot Bill record is done and is supposed to come out on April 10. We’ve got those shipping soon. We did the preorders on that album, so it is in motion—if you get what I mean. We had this Optic Sink record in the works. Optic Sink is Natalie (Hoffmann) from Nots and Ben Bauermeister from the Magic Kids. It’s really cool, electronic stuff. That’s at the digitally mastered stage. The Ar-Kaics record is up there. So is the new Quintron record. We have a choice of getting these lacquers cut and then wait to press. Or we can try to hang tight and wait. I think we’re going to have to wait to minimize expenses right now. They’re all there. I think once we get through this it’s going to be a clusterfuck of people trying to rush through records. But who really knows what’s going to happen? There are all these Record Store Day LPs that supposedly got pressed or are getting pressed.

Ryan: I read that Record Store Day’s date has been pushed back to June 20, 2020. That might be a little optimistic.

Eric: Yeah. It’ll be interesting. It’s another nail in the coffin for trying to sell records. We’re limping along. If we can get our weekend regulars in to pick up records, that’ll help. But this shutdown is going to put a lot of people—obviously, record stores included—out of business. Labels are going to be in trouble too. If you’ve got records scheduled for a Record Store Day release in mid-April, that’s done. That money isn’t coming back until Record Store Day finally happens. The market was already shrinking before all of this hit.

Ryan: You’re still getting new stuff in. Goner’s site is getting updated regularly. What new records have you been listening to?

Eric: We’re trying. It’s going to be hard justifying it going forward. We were really excited to get that Dadamah record (This is Not a Dream) in. I remember it coming out in the early 1990s. That kind of dreamy, New Zealand stuff is what we want to push. However, the hard part is that everyone into that subgenre already knows about it. It’s difficult to get new people into it. We did that Chubby and the Gang record (“All Along the Uxbridge Road” 7”). That was a street punk-type of chugger. We sold a bunch of records for them. Alec (McIntyre) and Cole (Wheeler) at the shop were really into it. So, we gave it a shot. That’s been interesting—getting into the American Oi!-type stuff. We were trying to put some more of that material out when everything ground to a halt. It’s not really my scene, but it’s been interesting weeding through all of this stuff and going, “Oh, yeah, this is pretty good.” Currently, I’ve been trying to find music for the kids at home that they’ll find palatable. They’re playing really crappy stuff. It’s a constant battle. They like songs from cartoons.

Ryan: I bought that recent Exek record (Some Beautiful Species Left) off the Goner site. It was great. It had a real Neu! and Tuxedomoon feel to it.

Eric: That’s a great record. I appreciate that.

Ryan: It’ll be difficult getting inventory. Just thinking about it now—Revolver (Distribution) is closed for at least another couple of weeks.

Eric: Yep. Because all of the distributors and stores are closing, it drives the people who want those records straight to the labels. It’s bad for the stores, good for the labels. We’re a store and a label, so we kind of benefit. But it takes away from having a centralized place to buy records. Which is fine, but it’s something else to worry about down the line.

Ryan: I always looked at our (Spacecase’s) relationship with Goner as symbiotic. I always knew you were going to buy our releases. The Goner store has enabled us to kick the can down the road for a couple extra years.

Guilin/Yangshuo!

For months, I had been looking at images of the picturesque towns of Guilin and Yangshuo, China. It was a goal of mine to visit these places by the end of the summer, and we made it! Homer and I spent a 3-day weekend enjoying nature, spectacle, and culture in a more provincial region of China.

Note: I found it pretty difficult to gain specific information about traveling in Guilin and Yangshuo online, so hopefully this is helpful for those who are planning trips there!

Thursday, September 7

There are two main ways to get to Guilin from Hong Kong: by plane or by train. We found that there was only one flight a day going to Guilin that was very expensive (Cathay is the only airline that does direct flights from HK to Guilin). Also, since we only had two nights there, we didn't want to arrive at 4 or 5pm, by which time all the outdoor experiences would be closed. So we opted to take a train. From Tsuen Wan, we took a public bus to Sha Tin, then a train to Shenzhen, and then another train from Shenzhen to Guilin. We booked our tickets from Shenzhen to Guilin online ahead of time. In total, it took us about 7 hours to get there; but if you take the earliest train, you can arrive by 1 or 2 in the afternoon and still have most of the day to explore. 

We took a cab from the station in Guilin and arrived at our hotel around 3:00 PM. (Side note: cabs and communication in general is a lot easier if you’re able to speak Chinese – even just a little bit goes a long way. Of course Homer did most of the legwork in this department, but even I was able to converse with the locals from time to time.)

By 3:30, we were bummed to find that the bamboo rafts and other attractions were already about to close. However, our hotel was able to help us book a nighttime boat cruise which toured the architecture of Guilin. In the meantime, we chose to shop and dine in the area to kill time.

In this area, there were a lot of touristy shops, tea (especially mango tea) places, a few restaurants, and stands serving local delicacies (fried bugs and crocodile meat). I’m not even sure what this plaza is called, but it was just a few steps away from the Sheraton Guilin.

By nightfall, it was just about time to board the Two Rivers/Four Lakes boat tour. This is definitely worth doing, especially at night. All the buildings and mountains are lit up colorfully and you get a really good view of the famous Sun and Moon towers. There are two versions of this tour: one has English and Chinese narration and is an hour long, and one just has Chinese and is about 80 minutes long. The former stops halfway through to watch a piece of performance art from the boat; the latter basically skips it and turns back. There are some great photo ops along the way, as you’ll see...

As this picture was being taken, I heard “aww”ing next to me and looked over to see two parents, bemused at the fact that their kid was decidedly enamored with me. I began to “aww” myself but then noticed that the kid had on no bottoms. No pants. No undies. Just livin’ free. I wish I could say this was the first time this has happened on my travels, but alas.

This bridge reminded me of the floating lanterns in Tangled. What else?

Friday, September 8

This was our only full day of the trip, and was therefore our big touring day. We booked a tour to Yangshuo through our hotel, the first leg of which was a 90-minute bus ride to the coast of the Li River. There, we disembarked and (after waiting for the rain to settle) boarded bamboo speed boats in groups of four. I was actually expecting those stand-up rafts that you paddle with a giant stick, but this was a good experience too. (It turns out those kinds of rafts are mostly found in Yangshuo proper, and they’re really just for leisure, not for transportation purposes.)

These speedboats took us on an hourlong cruise down the river, past the beautiful knobby mountains – including the famous “Mural Hill Nine Horses” mountain. Personally, I don’t know if this was totally worthwhile. It was really interesting at first, but after 60 or 70 minutes, we were pretty bored. Unfortunately, the main attraction (Nine Horses Mountain) was the last thing of the tour, so I suppose it’s worth it if you really want a great view of that.

The boat dropped us off near a taxi stand, where transportation had been pre-arranged by the tour group. We piled into 10-person tuk-tuk-style taxis and took a quick ride to the nearby town of Xingping. We only had a few minutes here to poke around the souvenir shops before catching the tour bus to Yangshuo.

The tour group offered an extended tour of the sights of “Shangri La” for whoever was interested. But since we only had one day in the area, we decided to do our own thing for the rest of the day. After grabbing a quick lunch at a place called “Demon” (????) (I know) (the food was good tho), our first order of business was finding a place to rent scooters. We found one without too much trouble – 100 RMB per person bought us each a scooter for the day. For another 100 RMB, we hired a guide to take us around the countryside of Yangshuo. This was undoubtedly the most priceless experience of our trip, as well as one of my favorite things I’ve done since living in Asia.

This was literally advertised to us as “the place where they took the photo for the default background on Windows XP.” It exceeded expectations. Also, my Lizzie McGuire dreams came true with this mint green vespa. I mean are you kidding?!

Our guide – a sprightly older lady – helped us find a half dozen hidden gems that we never would have seen on TripAdvisor or Instagram. She took us to a place with an old mill spinning in the water, a cavernous mountain area where you could sing and your voice would echo off the mountains (and we did), a mountain with a piece missing from it where the light shone through, and an area where 20 RMB would buy you a bucket of arrows to shoot at makeshift targets beneath the mountains. To top it all off, we got to see the sunset as we rode back into town. It was truly unforgettable.

After returning our scooters, we headed back into what seemed to be “downtown Yangshuo” (I’m not actually sure what this area is called), and grabbed some snacks. Homer got a hot dog covered in hash browns, and I got a ramune/vanilla flavored ice cream.

That night, we had tickets to see “Impressions of Sanjie Liu,” a music, light, and water show performed nightly by an ensemble of hundreds of Yangshuo locals. There's not much of a storyline, but the inspiration is a character from a Chinese legend named Sanjie Liu, a girl with a beautiful singing voice who won the heart of her lover by singing to him from one mountain to another. Going in, our frame of reference was Macau’s House of Dancing Water and Disney’s Fantasmic. It wasn’t on the same scale of course, but this is still definitely worth seeing – if only for the moments when 200 people in costume light up the lake in front of you. Scenes of local choirs singing native folk songs, and performers walking their cattle along the river give you a feeling of what traditional life is/was like in these villages of China. And there are also more spectacular moments, featuring dance, large floating set pieces, and even lighting up the entirety of the mountains in front of you. We also enjoyed being far enough away from light pollution to be able to look up and see the stars. Tickets range from 200-500 RMB as I recall, and we got them through our hotel.

On our last morning in Guilin, we decided to pay a visit to the Ludi Yan reed flute caves. This is a place to see the natural cave formations that have been "enhanced" by tourism companies; the formations are all colorfully lit, and it's a really interesting way to experience nature. You can buy tickets at the door. The tour was just over an hour long and the narration was all in Chinese. We really enjoyed this. (Except for the part where a kid dropped trow in the middle of the caves while his mom held a Ziploc bag for him to pee into. She then sealed the bag and dropped it into a trash can. I can’t make this stuff up.)

After stopping by the souvenir vendors outside the reed caves exhibition (and using my limited Mandarin to bargain with them), it was just about time to head back to Hong Kong. Guilin and Yangshuo were a wonderful retreat. If we could have stayed longer, I would have loved to try the stand-up bamboo rafting and maybe a hot air balloon. These towns are truly diamonds in the rough, and I recommend them to anyone traveling in Asia. Especially if you have a China visa that’s good for the next ten years!

Die bunte Mischung und die hohe Qualität des Publikums sind für das Gelingen des Abends der entscheidende Faktor.

Pünktlich um neun Uhr beginnt Jake Bugg sein Konzert mit einer gewohnt unpersönlichen Ansage und zwei akustischen Stücken. Mit dem dritten Titel füllt sich die Bühne, neben dem unauffälligen Schlagzeuger und dem stetig lächelnden Keyboarder wird Bugg von dem noch schmächtigeren und noch jünger aussehenden Bassisten unterstützt. Der Keyboarder löst ein Live-Problem des dritten Albums „On my one“: die vielen punktuell genutzten Instrumente. Zwischen dem erneut akustischen drittletzten Stück und diesem Bandeinstieg arbeitet sich der britische Musiker nicht einfach durch seine CDs oder spielt die Titel einfach runter sondern ergänzt sie um solistische Gitarrenparts, instrumental freiere und kraftvollere Songabschlüsse, starken Kontrasten in Tempo und Lautstärke. Das Live-Erlebnis ist somit ein einzigartiges, das größte Geschenk eines Künstlers ein sein Auditorium. Das nahezu jeder Einzelne im Publikum das identische Bild des mit leicht gebeugten Knien dastehenden, konzentriert Gitarre spielenden und komplett in schwarz gekleideten Jake Bugg machen muss, ist der einzige Fauxpas des Publikums. Die drei Posen Buggs (Blick nach vorne, auf den Boden oder mit geschlossenen Augen, Blick in die Luft mit zurückgelegtem Oberkörper) müssen scheinbar um ein Vielfaches öfter festgehalten werden. Die, in einem der ruhigsten Momente des Abends (Simple Pleasures), hemmungslos schwatzenden deutschen Besucher links vor der Bühne sind der einzige weitere Publikumsausfall, welcher (vermutlich) mit dem wütenden Blick Buggs kommentiert wird. Die größte Bewährungsprobe für das Aushaltevermögen der Zuhörer ist das letzte akustisch und Solo vorgetragene Stück „Broken“. Bugg wählt ein provokant langsames Tempo, welches jeden Akkordwechsel deutlich ersichtlich und jeden Kommentar des Publikums deutlich hörbar macht. Diese Prüfung besteht das deutsch-französische Publikum problemlos. Im Verhältnis zum Auftritt beim Sonic Vision Festival 2016 wirkt der Musiker zum einen mehr auf den Klang des Moments bedacht und zum anderen endlich an den richtigen Auftrittsort in Luxembourg gesetzt. Das überschaubare Atelier war am Ende gut gefüllt, ohne die Tribüne miteinzubeziehen. Die dortige Kindergruppe und ihre tanzenden erwachsenen Begleiter genießen das exklusive Recht der Erhöhung. Auch der Klang ist passender, wobei die Stimme Buggs trotz insgesamt exzellenter Abmischung punktuell ein wenig quietschend klingt. Dieser Klang ist aber auch ein markantes Merkmal der Musik des Singer-Songwriters. Ergänzt wird dieser Klang mit der von Nottingham geprägten Artikulation und dem manchmal gewaltvoll wirkenden Gesang. Jeder Vokal durchläuft Dutzende Phasen der Ausformung, und jeder Zuschauer kann diesen direkt beobachten. Insgesamt ist die Bühnenpräsenz des 23jährigen Briten in größerem Maße vorhanden. Die sachlich gehaltenen Ansagen werden abschließend um einen Dank an das Publikum, und seine Bereitschaft an einem Mittwochabend zu diesem Konzert zu kommen,  ergänzt. Auch der Blickkontakt zum Publikum findet häufiger statt. Auf den Ruf: „Jake, I love you“ reagiert er mit einem höflichen „Thank you“ um anschließend den Titel „Me and You“ anzustimmen. Ein sehr schöner Zufall innerhalb der perfektionierten Performance. Das Publikum mag nach optischer Betrachtung und numerischer Bezifferung klein sein, aber es kommt mit guter Stimmung, viel (Vor)Freude und großem Energievorrat zur Veranstaltung. Ein engagiertes Publikum und ein guter Auftritt treffen sich in der Mitte zu einem gelungenen Konzert.

Mit ausgeprägten Kontrasten in Tempo- und Lautstärkegestaltung und Abweichungen zu der Aufnahme wird das Publikum zusätzlich überrascht. Nach dem offensichtlichen Desinteresse der Festivalbesucher im Winter 2016 ist Jake Buggs Auftreten hier ein kompaktes, stimmungsvolles Konzept. Das angekündigte Cover „Going back to the roots“ erhält eine entsprechend kompakte, klar strukturiertet Färbung. Ein häufiger Vorwurf der Kritiker gegenüber Buggs Musik ist die starke Orientierung an älteren Vorbildern. Diese kaum zu leugnende Orientierung macht die Cover-Version deutlich.
