Blurry vision, exhaustion, workaholic, forgetting to eat and drink, fluff

[Follows Sharing of Burden]

Harrison squinted at the text on his monitor, willing the letters to come into focus. He rubbed his eyes, glasses smudged with sweaty fingerprints.

“You need sleep.” Sarah set another coffee cup at his desk despite her disappointed tone. “You’re ruining your eyes staring at all those screens.”

“I’m fine. It’s only been a few hours.” He grimaced as he took a sip from the coffee cup. It was just plain water.

“Eight hours without getting up to drink or eat is too long.”

“I have been drinking!”

“Coffee, with lots of caffeine. A well know diuretic.” Sarah rolled her eyes as she walked behind his chair, head resting on top of his own as she peered down at him. “Can you even read this?”

“I would be able to, if somebody had brought me some coffee.” His tone was lighthearted, but there was a thin vein of frustration in his words.

“If there’s a clue in that code, it’s not going anywhere. You need to sleep.” Even her soft brown eyes were foggy in his unfocused vision. “Please.”

He closed his eyes, nodding with a yawn.

“Alright, alright.”

“And finish that water.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Hero?” Sidekick whispers. “Did you hear me?” she stands over him, her hands on his shoulders. “Hero?”

He blinks awake and groans. The back of his head throbs and a broken flower vase lays shattered around his head. “What happened?”

He struggles to his feet, swaying gently when he manages to get upright. Sidekick holds his elbow and leads him to a chair.

“Villain’s dead.”

He blinks slowly and shakes his head, focusing on her. “What?”

“Villain’s dead. Were you awake for that?” she asks, looking over her shoulder at Villain’s corpse.

He frowns and his brow draws together, “Oh.” he blinks again and pulls away from Sidekick. “Did I do it?”

She smiles sadly and shakes her head, “No. I think it was Vigilante.”

He nods and shakes his head gently, “I think I need to sit down. Villain knocked me out.”

“Yeah, I know. Let me get you some water too, yeah?”

He nods and cradles the back of his head with his left. The chair welcomes him with a plume of dust kicking off the fabric when he falls back into it. He stares at Villain’s corpse and the sprays of blood surrounding him. Whatever happened, he was glad Vigilante let him live.
