So, it's come to my attention that calling The Winchesters 'fanfic' is something that a cursed segment of the SPN fandom is doing to denigrate TW.
I have gleefully called it fanfic, and that's because it is clearly a transformative work based on the original show. Jensen Ackles literally said: I hate this ending for the blorbo inside my heart (and body), I can't let him go, and I'm gon' write him a new ending. Then he threw his money at it, and suited up. Good boy.
For the record, I think that is fucking awesome. Let me be very clear: fanfic is something I love very much, something that is of genuine intellectual interest, and a thing you will pry from my cold, dead hands. Calling something fanfic is not, to me, a denigration of any kind. Believe me, when I tell y'all that I never expected to take Jensen Ross Ackles into my heart like I have thanks to this amazing turn of events, but THIS HAS DONE IT. I love that dude. He looks so fucking cute when he is fixing that dog's dinner of an ending to a show and a character that I got 15-year slow-burned into being over-invested in. He has never looked cuter.
That said, my calling it a fundamentally transformative work doesn't mean I'm saying it's not canon. What happened in TW is canon in the SPN universe, and the haters can die mad about it. Dean is canonically actively searching for his "family", or like, the one member of his family he doesn't know exactly where to find... I'll give you a hint:
...and dealing with his trauma while driving his magic car through portals in the multiverse to hang out with his baby parents and their awesome friends.
Jensen's privileged position as both the owner of the intellectual property and the producer of a transformative work based on previous canon means that TW hits an interesting sweet spot in the shared space on the fic vs canon Venn diagram of my dreams. I love it, and I hope someone is writing a dead-serious dissertation somewhere, although probably not, because it's not like it's a new situation that something is simultaneously transformative and an original work.
So tl;dr -- TW is clearly a transformative work, and it is also canon. Jensen Ackles is a goddamn delight, and I love him for this. I hope he is very proud of himself. Jensen, you're doing great, honey! Finally, calling something fanfic is not a denigration, because fanfic is legit and awesome. The end.

He’s so blorbo-shaped and it’s sad that he’s not more people’s blorbos.
iirc he mentions (in the anime at least) that his village worked solely on a barter system and he wasn’t introduced to the concept of money until he moved to Yokohama which is just incredibly fascinating to me. I’d really love to read a thorough analysis of finances and different character’s relationship with money in bsd, because What do you mean Dazai is broke, where’s his old mafia money? What do you mean Chuuya is rich, how did he learn how to properly save and invest money?
As for Kenji, he’s the only character who’s currently in an adjusting process of going from a barter system to a cash-based economy— and it’s outright mentioned—and yet it’s never explored.
I’m probably just in School Mode right now since I just finished up with my homework, but I would totally read a twenty page dissertation on what the most likely path of adjustment would be for all the characters who experience a drastic change in financial situations.

Unpopular Opinions game: ❤️💚💖
Ooooh let's see! As you probably know, my current brainrot is AoT, so I'm focusing on that for this dissertation 😆
❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
I'll admit that, while I'm open to various ships, probably over 90% of what I read is rivamika and so my picture is pretty cropped. Also, I'm not afraid of the back button. But there are versions of Levi I've read that make you go "who is this character and why's he named as my blorbo?" It's worse in the few self-ships I've read (make him look more babygirl than Momiji Sohma) but he tends to be portrayed way, waaay more sweet and articulate than he is in canon.
I can sort of forgive that up to some point, however, bc it's fanfic and it's self indulgent and we like to idealize our blorbos. I guess if my fave was Erwin, or Jean, or whoever, I'd tend to see their mischaracterizations more. However, the mischaracterization that stood out to me the most was in a rm fic where Mikasa acted the absolute opposite of herself. It was a modern AU, but it wasn't a case of different setting-different life-different traits (like, say, an articulate Levi in AUs where he had a good upbringing). She was downright vindictive, manipulative and conniving in that one. I recall I left a kudos after the first chapter because it had started well enough, but by the time I finished I couldn't bring myself to leave a comment. The story itself was interesting, but it was so far removed from her character that I just couldn't.
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
Age.

And was very glad that an actual psychologist recently argued in a similar note.
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?
This is a hard one as I don't go around making popularity contests. One might be Levi's age, as still most fics make him 15+ years older than the 104th.
But the one I think is the most unppopular is that Eren can't possibly know what percentage of humanity he destroys in the Rumbling. He can't, NO ONE can at that point, because the actual extent of the damage and body count can't be known until weeks, if not months, after the Rumbling stops (they don't have internet or satellite phones so data assessment and communication takes time), and because the titans are no more after his death, he cannot remember this info from the future Attack titan (it's a closed time loop, so they can't see things in paths from after the time loop). It's just a silly thing, if you ask me, it's just an oversight from Isayama, who has proven to be shit with numbers, and he could have just said he wiped out "most of humanity", with Armin confirming the number in the epilogue. But people won't hear any of it.
(on a side note, 80% of humanity does not mean 80% of territory, as people are distributed unevenly across the globe)

HEADS-UP: THIS IS A RANT BTW -
So the other day I was having a conversation about Stoner Hobie which I support
And I said that I think he'd be into it or at least positive towards it because he would be able to see through the xenophobic anti-marijuana propaganda that was government sanctioned in the fifties, pushing the idea that people who smoked weed where either lazy and scatterbrained - or a crazy, insane drug addict.
Especially since he lived and grew up in the 60's and 70's - post Vietnam War. Hobie's from the hippy era were pot had a pretty positive connotation
And then someone was like 'yeah but I don't think he'd like it he just seems too conscious to be a smoker he's way too clearheaded he seems like the type to want to be clearheaded all the time'
And I understand that but like - clearheaded???
He literally says he be at the pub with the mandem.
There are absolutely straight-edge punks out there but Hobie dead-ass implied he goes to the pub often
if having a drink or getting drunk is fine with him then whats the problem with smoking??
I absolutely understand if you don't support the headcanon because thats what it is and its just my silly little blorbo thought
but when you forget that theres millions of people with chronic conditions that smoke cannabis everyday and still manage to be grown adults - and you start using words like 'conscious' and shit its very clear you fell into the EXACT same propaganda I said Hobie wouldn't

I feel like her pain is something that I make sure shows up a lot in my fics (or at least I try to) because I don't feel like that's something that gets explored a lot. (It does get explored but out of 20k sc works, most of them don't even try to if we're honest)
She's like!!!! Extremely smart!!!!!! I do understand the show itself always took Kara's intelligence down to make literally every other character sound smart but she IS SMART ON HER OWN!!!! not only is she number/reasoning smart (miss "we did calculous from the age of four"), she's also visual smart (miss "I remember all of them" thanks to her photographic memory), musical smart (miss voice of an angel etc etc), linguistic smart (miss learned an entire new language as a kid when she was thrown into earth + we know she speaks more than just english) AND people smart (miss convinces someone to put down the gun etc etc). I recently made a fic that made her sound SOOOO stupid it pissed me off like you'd think one of the main characters of a ship being smart would be the norm but apparently it's an idea/headcanon not everyone has 🥴
Also as an specific headcanon that was never mentioned on the show is: I think she'd totally have kids. I know not everyone agrees with that one but my god. That woman has SO much love to give, how can she not want to give that love to children. How can she not want to make sure a little orphan gets the type of love and understanding the Danvers gave to her? When it's completely in her power to be able to give them that. How can she not want to share her culture and her name and her memories with someone that can keep passing on those memories and love? She'd have kids!!!! I'll die on this hill
Also she's a JEALOUS bitch. She really is. She IS. But hear me out. She's not jealous in the horrible possessive way most people are. She's not jealous in the "I don't trust you" way. One of the most prevalent parasites in the world, and the subject of my undergraduate dissertation! They're the only flukes with separate sexes, and they need to form mated pairs to fully mature. The female is held in a special canal on the body of the male, and they remain that way from there on, living and navigating the host body as a single organism. I find this dreadfully romantic, in a grotesque intimacy kind of way.
Sealand:
It's a micronation on a formal naval fort founded by PIRATE RADIO OPERATORS that has had POWER STRUGGLES BETWEEN WARRING PIRATE RADIO FACTIONS and A REBEL GOVERNMENT/HOSTAGE CRISIS despite the fact that it could fit inside the exhibition halls at most convention centers. Law
Would I date him? Absolutely! Past his initial prickly and sometimes scrungly exterior, the man is a sweetheart. We're both nerds, we both hyperfixate on things & we both prefer quiet over loud / boisterous settings.
He's smart & cares deeply about the people he loves, so I believe dating him would be enjoyable. Not only that, but look at him, he's so easily flustered how could you not fall for him? 🥺
Gosh there are so many pieces of art / screencaps of Law that make me swoon or go feral. Recently though, I stumbled across this piece by @/blithe-bee over here on Tumblr & something about it just made my brain mushy.
Relaxed Law? Depictions of the white lead disease even after consuming the devil fruit? AND THE WHITE STREAKS IN HIS HAIR?? The fucking white streaks sealed the deal for me tbh. A simple piece, but great composition & structure, well rendered & captures Laws "leave me tf alone, I'm relaxing" aura really well.

Would I da– yes. Don't even have to finish the question. This man could do the most despicable things & the answer would still be yes. I could go on a whole rant about how he wasn't as terrible as people like to make him seem, but I doubt anyone wants to read an entire dissertation on the subject lol.
Is he a little shit? Oh, most definitely. But, at the end of the day, it was obvious he had the capacity to lead a normal life [well as normal as he could considering the abuse he suffered]. He tried to get his shit together when he was with Megumi's mom, but when the person he genuinely loved died, I don't really blame him for choosing to go back to his less than stellar way of living.
We'd have a hell of a time together, even if I did have to pay for everything as he gambles every penny he makes away. He knows what he wants & cares about the people close to him in his own little way. He's smug, but lord knows I'd swoon and melt under that smirk and some flirting.
And uh, have you seen him? No one can tell me this man doesn't know how to fuck. Just give me 5 minutes & I'll have ascended into a higher plane of existence. 😮💨

Tuiyla’s Academic Paper Tips
Writing this because @md-drawz asked but I’m doing it in a post format hoping that someone else might also find it useful. Disclaimer, it’s been three years since I graduated university and have only been writing “essays” in the form of blorbo metas since, but during those three years where I had coursework I’d like to think I found a good rhythm that helped tackle papers. A lot of you are uni/college aged or are gonna be soon so this is for all of you, hope you find it helpful.
This whole post mainly boils down to note organizing tips and helping you create a structure, a skeleton you can then build on and write your essay. There are many different kinds of papers you could be expected to write in a tertiary education setting and I’m coming at this from a media/cultural studies perspective, but the core of it applies to all writing.
Organize notes
Okay but how. Depending on what you’re writing and how much reading and research goes into it, you can end up with notes that are longer than the actual essay you need to write. What I usually did, certainly in my last year, is break the notes down into parts but, crucially, do it in different documents. Say, you have your initial notes in a Word document or any other text file. Copy that document and start deleting and reorganizing - your original copy will always be there as backup if you need something deleted after all. Make several copies with several steps if you’d like. By the end it wasn’t unusual for me to have three notes docs, many more for my dissertation.
Basically:
The first document is everything, full quotes and all you could ever possibly need and refer to. Write out the full titles of books and articles so you can do your bibliography properly at the end but from now on just use the referencing you’ll actually need when writing. So in later versions of the notes I’ll just write Tuiyla, 2022 (if you do it Harvard style) instead of the full title of my source.
Streamline in the second doc: identify themes within a source, themes you already wanted to build your essay one. For example, I’m writing about women in noir and Tuiyla, 2022 has useful ideas and quotes about the very basics like definition of the genre and its history, as well as some more advanced stuff useful for my later arguments. I note those main areas down. Then, when I went through all my sources I group them together.
This can be done in the second doc but I like to have it in a third one. So now that I have the main themes in sources, I sort by themes and ideas rather than individual sources. It helps if you went into the research bit with a vision of what main points you want to touch on and you can use that as a structure and assign sources and their ideas to it. Within a main idea I include bullet point of what I’m gonna say and what sources talk about/support that claim.
Here’s an example of a third-year paper, first my research doc:
second, a structure doc that’s more organized and has several main sections, in order (a better more advanced version would streamline further and focus on themes first and sources second):
Have an arc
Now that you hopefully have your main building blocks of topics you want to touch on and sources to back all that up, you organize them so the paper has an arc. Forget about intro and conclusion for a second, focus on the main body of your paper. Start with the building block that best explains the basics and then try to find the best segues into other sections. This is more of a me thing, but I think a good essay flows seamlessly between paragraphs because you find a way for the topics to naturally progress into one another. Point A brings us to point B, point C presents and interesting counterargument, etc.
If there’s a topic that a source brings up but you can’t quite fit it anywhere, it might be time to say goodbye to that idea. Depending on how hardcore you are with your research and what your word count is, there’s gonna be a ton of stuff that just can’t fit. Again, all about streamlining until you get an actual skeleton you can follow when sitting down to write.
Ideally, you start with a thesis even before your research and that evolves as you start reading up on the subject so now that you have your building blocks and arc it’s a good idea to refine that thesis statement and write a few words of introduction/conclusion. It literally only has to be a few words, maybe a full sentence, just to see if you’re actually gonna say something with your paper. It’s a very initial draft that you’re gonna rewrite once you have your text’s body anyway.
Write summaries of sections
You have your sources, know where to bring up what, have an arc you can go on and you know what you’ll ultimately want to say. It’s still hard to get started on writing the damn thing and that’s perfectly okay. Going through all you have so many times is designed to help you focus but you also need to take a step back sometimes. So if you’re having difficulty starting, know that a) starting is the hardest thing to do for any writer anywhere and that b) you’re already doing so well when you have a structure and building blocks. Without those, it’s hard to stay on topic and within word counts and so organizing your talking points should also help with the flow of the writing itself. The thing is, as much as it can be a pain to do all this organizing and do it on as many levels as I recommend, it does help. It gives you constraints but within those you can get started.
The best tip I have for getting those first words out is yet another reworking of your structure, but this time around try to have as many complete sentences as possible. Write short summaries for each of the main arguments/paragraphs and have your sources and points ready in a bulleted list. After a while it really just becomes a matter of connecting those dots with a few extra words and it might even help you keep things concise.
Trust your notes
The most important lesson I can leave you with is that yes, writing an academic paper of any kind can be a pain because it’s strict in its structure and doesn’t allow you to sway too far from your point. But, use that limitation to your advantage and work through your notes as many times as you need to to get closer and closer to a proper first draft, after which every version gets easier. The good news is, if you go through the trouble of really getting your notes together you’ve basically started already without noticing. So trust those notes and trust the different stages you put them through to get a final product of a shiny and new paper.
As a final tip, it’s true in academia as much as with everything else: reading makes you a better writer. So your research is already half of your success when getting ready to write an academic paper because you’re already familiarising yourself with the terminology, style, structure, and types of ideas that you’ll also have to recreate.

I passed my grad school oral/qualifying exams!! what does this mean? well, theoretically it should mean I can advance to candidacy and start proposing and working on my dissertation but unfortunately I am not eligible due to a fit of pandemic nihilism having led me to just not bother taking my language exams. so I don’t know what it means for now. but I worked really hard, and I passed, and w*yne k*estenbaum (blorbo from my opera studies) signed my copy of the qu*ens thr*at, so
