Alright it's time for PART TWO OF MY ONE PIECE OPENING ANALYSIS. Turns out you can only add 30 images to a post lol.
Anyways you can find part one here, but if you've already seen it or just want to skip to the good shit, Hi. I'm anime only but have seen manga spoilers for Kid, Law, Kuma, and Bonney, so that will affect my analysis.
Tumblr media
Anyways remember last time when I talked a bit about the line "When random contexts / Start to make sense on their own" and the deliberate parallels between the fights with Luffy/Lucci, Kid/(manga spoilers), Law/Blackbeard, Zoro/Seraphim Mihawk, and Garp/Kuzan? Well those continue here except it's Sabo and the Revolutionaries against the ENTIRE WORLD GOVERNMENT. These random contexts? They're all tied to the fight Sabo is in right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"When random contexts / Start to make sense on their own / The threads of time are spun back together"
This sequence of shots gives me chills every time. Every single time. The parallels between the Revolutionary Army's crows and the World Government's seagulls? The falling papers and books. Fucking Wapol??? The FUNERAL???? and the SWORDS??? God if those swords in front of the world government's throne DON'T end up being used to stab someone by the end of this story (either in the past or future or maybe both) I will eat my shirt this is CHECKOV'S SWORD THIS GOVERNMENT WAS FOUNDED ON VIOLENCE AND CONQUEST I SWEAR-
*ahem* Anyways. "The threads of time are spun back together." All of those "random contexts" we saw before? The fights that are paralleling each other and driving towards a single end point? To stick with the string metaphor, the world government has unraveled the thread of history. Everything happening now is going to spin it back together into a cohesive narrative. Time is running out. The end is in sight. Their string is going to be cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again with the parallels. All of the men who Luffy impacted in the past, Sabo, Kid, Law, and Coby. They're all rising to take on this enemy. They have been beaten, but they will rise again, and they will charge forward into the future (at least, that's how I read the storytelling here). I think this theme of rising from major defeats is going to be a huge one in this arc, especially for these four. They are going to get stronger and be Luffy's competition. The Whitebeard and Garp to his Rodger, if you will.
Also, speaking of the men who Luffy impacted, HOLY SHIT IS THAT VIVI
Tumblr media
Law, Coby, Kid, and Sabo may all be rising from defeat, but you know who's charging forward? VIVI. Vivi is going to be so fucking important this arc just you wait.
Tumblr media
And listen- I saw a theory a few weeks ago that Vivi *might* eat a certain devil fruit that I will not name because (manga spoilers), but looking at this picture, with the way she's reaching out towards that specific shape? Yeah she's totally gonna eat that devil fruit. Wish I could link the theory but unfortunately it's deep in my youtube watch history by now and i didn't save it.
EDIT: As a couple people have pointed out, it might be Bonney in that scene and not Vivi, as indicated by the pink highlights on the hair. That honestly makes a lot more sense than Vivi eating a random(ish) devil fruit.
Tumblr media
Finally, I want to talk about this last shot. The Theme of this opening. All of these separate, winding paths, leading towards one final destination: Laugh Tale. The truth of the world. Law, Kid, Luffy, Sabo, The Revolutionaries, the Marines, Coby, Garp, the World Government, everyone is on the path to Laugh Tale, we're in the endgame now, and everyone is going to be vital to whatever lies ahead. I imagine some of the poetry is lost in the english translation, but there's a reason that the music keeps repeating the words "all of us"
"All of us" are going to reach Laugh Tale.

chapter 1079 early scan spoilers
Okay, if you're reading this, you've read the early scans, and it's ridiculous that I guess the raws were available from about Tuesday (a day after official release), and I could read the actual early scans from late last night (Wednesday).
It's just too early. I blocked a bunch of people. I'm sorry. Like, I don't filter out the tag 'spoiler' cos you'll never see anything on tumblr, and I read the scans usually on Thurs or Fri to stop myself from getting spoiled.
Anything that came across my dash that wasn't under a cut, or without a long lead-in got the writer blocked. I'm sorry. I'm sure that I'm blocked on a number of lists too.
Alright, Sabo is not confirmed dead as yet, so I'm not taking this as Kid's demise until we get a further "Marco talking to Raizou (was it?) about Izou and loss" scene as some kind of confirmation. We've got a break next week, and then knowing Oda, this won't be mentioned again for some time.
Maybe Shanks will be pirate king, or having the road poneglyph will help him help Luffy. He's powerful, I'm still not convinced he's evil, perhaps amoral (which sometimes sounds worse than immoral) / super pragmatic. (Edit in): In his defence, he saw the future (destruction of the lesser fleets) and did check if Kid was healed before he "fought" him. Also, reports of Kids' rampaging (but the reader should be shown more of that too so that it carries weight).
The actions of Dorry and Brogy as retaliation for Kid's intention (so wipe out Victoria Punk and send all the Kid Pirates into the sea, Kid unconscious and Killer) were brutal, but Luffy really respects or views Kid as on his side and a strong fighter. (End of edit).
Oda has to give Shanks a show of strength, and Hawkins, Apoo and Drake were dealt with in Wano. Bonney's in Egghead, and we don't have enough of a back story for Urouge.
Okay, but Kid wasn't a small time player in Wano, and not way back in Sabaody. If we give him parallels with uncelebrated or under-acknowledged deaths, he played a bigger role than Izou, I'd say, but I'm a bit biased, in that Izou had a fairly big supporter's role in the Oden mini-arc. All the same, with the Big Mom defeat, it's messy for Oda to wipe Kid out so quickly and effectively, BUT then we saw Shanks stop the war at Marineford and stop Aramaki, but Kaidou gave him those scratches, and Kid was able to at least scratch Kaidou.
I am sure that the dudebros are now saying that because Shanks so easily defeated Kid, that Big Mom is obviously a lesser yonkou and Kid and Law's actions against her meant nothing. But she is and was terrifying, and Kid and Law did defeat her, and she has caused death and destruction wherever she went, so in opposition to all the pathetic power scalers out there, none of the three are or were weak.
SO, if Oda is in a race to the finish and just wants to get opposition out of the way, he'll need to wipe out Law too, I think. BUT, Blackbeard not only has Law, he has Pudding and Koby (and he might not have Law). Garp's on his way there, Helmeppo and others tagging along. So, yes, he's got about 6 (hundred) background storylines going on, but I feel that it would be messy of him to finish off Kid here. Or lazy.
Crossing my fingers that it's a Sabo kinda situation (cos I'm sure he's still around, or let's choose Pell, instead), rather than Pedro, cos that actually makes sense more than wiping out Kid for the sake of wrapping things up.

Note
i don't think attack on titan, the story itself, is antisemetic. more, I think antisemetism is subtext and general oppression during war is a theme. the reading that the ending is saying 'genocide is good' also doesn't make sense because eren and his followers are punished by the narrative. they literally kill him in the end. yes, eren is the character the story is localized through, but the actual protagonist post-time skip is armin, who hates warfare and hurting others. armin is the character the audience is meant to agree with, not eren. protagonist ≠ morally righteous character. the characters were thanking eren for sacrificing himself because he wanted to save them, but it's pretty clear, they didn't approve of what he did. eren is even paralleled with gaby and reiner, who the narrative positions as misguided, incorrect, and blinded by internalized racism. the narrative isn't pro-nationalism or pro-military either. it actually critiques both systems.
i remember reading an interview where isayama says he liked a japanese general from WWII, but he was talking about the general as a character in a short story. it's the equivalent of saying people who like ofmd are anti-black because they like blackbeard, who participated in the transatlantic slave trade. at most, I think the heavy-handed use of WWII imagery is tacky and shortsighted and evidence of poor editing. but no poorly written polygon article written by a guy who speed-read through the manga in 3 days and went into the story looking for something to hate, can change my mind on something. at most, I think isayama is a military buff or enthusiast who used mixed metaphors (that an editor should have helped him clean up) in a story with a rushed ending, but that's about it. I'm warry of taking the word of random people on twitter, of all places. they're not known to be the best bunch when it comes to critical thinking or reading comprehension and are just as reactionary as the people they claim to hate.
--
I haven't read it. Nationalism in a mangaka is nothing new, but I have no way of evaluating how likely it is in this case.
Fight it out yourselves in the replies.

Thoughts on that thing everyone’s so worried about (episode 8 speculation and reference to official and unofficial spoilers below the cut):
So, I haven’t seen the picture myself because I’m not looking for spoilers, but apparently there’s a BTS shot of a gravestone that’s making people think Izzy is going to die in the final episode. My theory? It’s a fuckery.
We know from official promo shots that Stede and Ed are going to reunite on a beach. It’s a parallel to Stede’s dream in the opening sequence to episode 1 – which suggests Izzy is likely to get stabbed as well.
My guess is that Izzy will pretend to betray Stede (again) for fuckery purposes, Stede will stab him (on the left), Izzy gets a last “You absolute twat” in, we all think he’s died, but the post-credit sequence will reveal otherwise.
Season 1 ended with Stede faking his own death. My prediction is that Ed is going to fake Blackbeard’s death at the end of season 3 to cast that identity off forever. So it would be narratively elegant for Izzy to fake his death this season. It’s also a symbolic rebirth for him now that he’s not an antagonist anymore and is opening himself up to new ways of seeing and expressing himself.
So basically: remember the story isn’t over until we’ve seen the post-credits scene.
Post-ep8 edit:
well, fuck.
my version was better.

ok I was pretty happy with how the adaptation of cr to tlovm went throughout the series. They had to cut some stuff, obviously, move some stuff around, but I did generally find many of the changes do make it a more cohesive story, especially emotionally.
But the Orthax fight? FUCK. The entire sequence was just made 100x better in tlovm. While in the stream it's basically another fight after we Just Had A Bigger Fight, the whole internal struggle that Percy was going through WHILE HE WAS MINDLESSLY TRYING TO KILL HIS FRIENDS AND SISTER.
Mmph.
Cinema.
Gimme that drama. Gimme that angst. Gimme those cool fucking demon powers where he just fucking shifts through the air (can he keep that? I want him to keep that. Don't go away Orthax you're so Sexyyyy). Gimme those emotional flashbacks of happier times. Gimme those dual-eye colours to show off that Internal Conflict.
(Percy can have Sexy Demon Powers. As a treat.)
Darling take off the mask (was orignaly a little earlier, but holy shit is this a brilliant adaptive change), AND HIS FACE UNDERNEATH IT.
(They're in love, your honor)
THE BARRELS HAD VMs NAMES.
HE SHOT HIS OWN HAND. THE RIPLEY PARALLELS.
I just love a good possession storyline.
(Also Percy's smile when the Sun Tree comes back online? Transcendent. Watered my crops. Healed the evil demon spirit in my soul and all that shit.)

But I was just thinking about how much PERFORMANCE and stagecraft there is in Our Flag Means Death; it’s really something else... layers... the Meta of it all...  It feels like almost every episode centers around a theatrical caper; The first episode, dressing up and having dinner with Badminton and the soldiers... Stede “surrounding” Izzy and tricking him on the island- The Lighthouse Gambit, The Pyramid Scheme, Godfrey and Jeff, The Art of Fuckery, Stede’s fake death...  And Blackbeard himself is SOOOO theatrical; he LOVES to perform, and he’s constantly showing off. (Omg and Stede? “I may be landed gentry, but I’m thrilled to be granted entry!” PLEASE. They were MADE for each other....) In episode 4... there’s obviously the Switching Clothes game, but also: Blackbeard clearly RELISHES getting to play the brilliant “Sherlock Holmes cracking the case” bit when he reveals his Fog/Full Moon Plan, and eats up the applause. He intentionally withheld the information from everyone, all so that he could do a bit of theater, and almost got everyone killed. (to be clear, I’m not criticizing him... I LOVE this about him... it’s both his personality AND a strategic move to solidify his own power...10/10 character, amazing) But yeah... he’s always showing off/performing/competing...  the way he’s so over-the-top and competitive and hammy at the French Party- going TOO far, really... and he’s so deeply wounded by failing and being laughed at. The way he hams it up so hard when he’s telling the Ghost Story about the Kraken- The way he arranges a full-on pyrotechnic show for the Revenge Crew show JUST to show off... And idk, I was just thinking about how the show is so much about performing Power and Masculinity, and the way it shows it’s all theate; an elaborate illusion that everyone agrees to, you know?  And then I was thinking about how the first thing that Broken-Hearted Edward does, is he writes a song and performs it live in front of the crew. I just think it’s so fun that his lingua franca is performance, you know? It’s so HIM. And then later, when he’s alone in his room and they begin chanting for him to “Give us another song!” You can see him just... give up.  He’s so TIRED of performing. What’s the point??? And I was thinking about the way it sort of parallels Episode 5, when suddenly he realizes that the Party Crowd that he’s so invested in impressing are fickle- -they love him as long as he’s giving them what they WANT, but their admiration is just a hair’s breadth away from contempt. Anyway, blah blah something, themes, blah... I just really love Ed lol Edit: Oh, and how could I not mention the significance of Ed telling Stede that he “Just wants to be Edward” a moment before kissing him for the first time? THE ROMANCE. The way he can stop performing and be HIMSELF with the one he loves. Edit #2: (Not to mention the bathtub scene omg: letting someone else see him huddle into a corner CRYING and confess: “I’m not a good person.”) THE INTIMACY!!!1111
