Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers - First Impressions
Woohoo! I'm so excited to get back to the Wonderswan games. I actually didn't know Anode/Cathode Tamer had sequels, but it does. For some reason I assumed "tag tamers" was going to be a fighting game lol. Also, it's a bit funny to go from color to black and white, but I guess this game came out before the Veedramon version of Anode/Cathode Tamer, so it makes sense. Initial thoughts after one hour of gameplay below.
Notes:
-Damn, why does this game get no love?? There's like one single walkthrough and every time I google "Tag Tamers," the 3rd game comes up instead. Pretty random, but oh well.
-Excited to go back to pixel graphics and old timey gaming music. Nostalgic to my childhood when I played the OG Pokemon games. Also happy to be playing a simpler, shorter game after Digital Card Battle threatened to go on and on for 100+ hours. (Some games are just too damn long!)
-Already see that they've added some quality of life features (digimon daycare) and new stuff to make things more interesting (jogress, armor). I'm glad it's still pretty simplistic though.
-They changed the battle system from that tactical style where you move your digimon around to just basic turn-based combat. I feel like this is kinda a downgrade, but also easier to turn my brain off to, so I guess it's fine...
-Sad that I have to put up with random encounters now. I don't feel like they add much to the game. If I wanted to grind I could just replay dungeons.
-Love all of the continuity nods! The game starts out during the events of Our War Game and then moves onto Ken's backstory. He meets Ryo and Wormmon, as shown in the anime. I wonder if the whole Digimon Emperor stuff will come up...? (Probably not).
-I was very excited to play as Ken for the first time since he's my fave from 02. Also good to see his early relationship with Wormmon, so cute!
-The "mirror site" concept is interesting. I like how it plays into the "digital world" theme in a clever way. I guess "tag tamers" refers to the fact that I'll be switching back and forth from Ken to Ryo. Is Gennai in both worlds though? That part's foggy at the moment...
-Felt pretty weird defeating Diaboromon with Veemon lol. Don't really get why they started the game like that.
-It's cool to see that you can buy the higher powered items from the start of the game. That really makes it feel like a continuation of Anode/Cathode Tamer.
-Millenniumon's design is hella ugly. I like his name tho lol. Very Y2K

I keep noticing that many people looking to go into Digimon TCG are having a hard time choosing which deck to begin with. Here goes.
Green: Ramp and board control through stuns.
Similar decks: Green, Nature, Megacolony.
My personal favorite Digimon is in this color, so I’m bound to sing its praises a little too highly. Green is all about rapid evolution and resting the opponent’s Digimon in order to either slow them down or attack their Digimon one on one. Mimi is a powerful Tamer card not to be overlooked, but Flower Cannon is what makes this deck truly pop off. Download is an exclusive mechanic to Green as of this post. Simply put, Download lets you rest a Digimon to make evolution costs cheaper. The main boss monsters are Ceresmon, Imperialdramon, Megagargomon, HerculesKabuterimon and Banchostingmon. Edit: Rustytyranomon, I love you.
Black: Defensive power and devolution.
Similar decks: Link Joker, Darkness blockers, Blue.
Black has the most blockers out of any of the decks in this TCG. While it won’t win fast, it won’t lose fast either. The ability to de-digivolve means you’ll rarely need to worry about the large stacks of evolutions your opponent may be setting up against you. The big bosses for the deck are Mugendramon, Ragnaloardmon, Omegamon Alter-S and Cresgarurumon.
Blue: Evolution discard, Omegamon turbo.
Similar decks: Blue, Water, Bermuda Triangle, Genesis
Blue is a bit hard to categorize at the moment, though it doesn’t mean the deck is outright bad. Most of this stems from the best Jogress cards in the game belonging to this set of cards. Blue has a variety of options for reducing the digivolution sources under opponent’s Digimon and gaining a nice profit from it. As most of the best effects will trigger while an opponent has a Digimon with no sources, most players will work into your hands without even meaning to. The main bosses are MetalGarurumon, Vikemon, Ulforce Veedramon, Omegamon and Imperialdramon.
Yellow: Security manipulation and power reduction.
Similar decks: White, Light, Angel Feather
A basic rule of thumb in all games: You can’t lose if you don’t die. Yellow is all about manipulating the security stack to gain massive benefits. Another key facet is the reduction of the DP on your opponent’s board. Not all too much more to it. Shinegreymon is a mean mean card that will make the lives of everyone you face miserable. Additionally, Mastemon, Seraphimon and Sleiphmon will help you stay alive or beat face faster.
Purple: Reanimation and retaliation.
Similar decks: Black, darkness, Granblue.
Tired of having one measly deck at your disposal? With Purple, your Trash is fully at your disposal. Horrible jokes aside, you get benefits from destroying your own guys and populating your Trash with degenerates. As you will all see in future posts, I do not care for Purple, though I will be eating crow if Lucemon gets revealed to be Purple. Main bosses are Lilithmon, any and all Myotismon (because of course it would be) and Beelezmon.
Red: Hit big, unga bunga.
Similar Decks: Red. Fire, Kagero, Narukami.
This deck does just about what you expect. Beat your opponent senselessly or turbo into a level 7 to do the same. Blitzgreymon, Wargreymon, both Omegamons, Ragnaloardmon and Volcanicdramon are all great ways to make your opponent die faster. Terra Force, I have my eyes on you.
Those are the basic most summaries I could provide for these decks. If I left something out or if you have requests as to what you’d like covered next, let me know! Tomorrow, we begin our lessons in science with Link Joker.

The struggle... A battle in the desert. - Digital lights.
There was so much to think, the revelation from Rexshiks’ appearance and the knowledge that his family was so at risk, made that Gex’s worries would go up high, the veedramon sighing to himself after a few days from worriedsome thoughts, maybe... Just maybe someone helped his family get out of all those secret laboratories that they constantly found from place to place, he was the more worried when he felt something comming his way and the veedramon was attentive though... Everything would fade to black as he was alone on his place.
“Why you... Why are you even doing this?!”There was a voice comming from somewhere, the veedramon gasped as he blinked and woke up in middle of nowhere in a dream, the scenario was dark, a black dessert could be seen while he stood there in the middle of it.
“What do you mean?!, who goes there?!” Gex growled, ready to fight, however it was the more weirder since his voice was dry, and barely able to manage any sound, his tongue tripped and made it hard to manage a single world but... He watched, his eyes fiercely upon the other as he was judging... His family was in danger and he wasn’t going to let anybody do what they did to him again.
“You are making all of my plans fail!, everything I do is worthless.... Everything has been worthless!”The voice sorrounded him and echoed through his mind, what does this guy mean... What does he even speak of?, he didn’t understand, at least not at the momment. “You made my life misserable, you are the reason why I am here!, you may ask... Who am I?”
His eyes finally took a bit of a glimpse to the sight of the lost quilava... “Z-Zackarie!” He gasped out, barely able to muster a word, though it was only a glimpse of the past that dragged him, his soul seemed to be incomplete... Such a fate was...
“I am dead... because of you!, you were the one that sent me there to die!, you were the reason why I am doing this... I am taking what you cared for... So... You suffer, you SUFFER for what happened to ME!” The grasp of two big hands clung around the veedramon as he tried to squirm out of the way of the Venom Myotismon... He had to run away!, he had to move out of the way... But... Karma surely reached to him, the Veedramon tried his best to squirm around as he wasn’t able to move out of his grasp, a sudden light comming to rescue him.
“OH NO YOU WON’T!”The voice of the egg reached him, now another digimon appeared, though it was only a spirit Jesmon/Hacku surely managed to save Gex from the impending doom, that was when the warrior had to act, and it wouldn’t stop him. “He saved all of us up till now!, even though you don’t believe in him... For what happened to you it was all a mistake!”
“A mistake!?, you call my death a mistake!?, I will crush you all here and now!!!” The fervent battle started Gex watching the to colosal digimons from far away, he had to do something... But... His mind was somewhere else, he didn’t have that spark, his doubts were all set once more.
“Urg... Agh... Hng...” The veedramon tried to hang himself up. “B-But... If it’s my fault... I-If it’s... It’s I am... I am the reason why everyone is suffering...” He groaned outloud and screamed loudly, all of this was a secondary effect of the black desert, he was... Also lost from everything that’s going on.
“NO!, don’t you dare to give up now!, this is only the beginning, Gex wake up!” Dorumon speak up to him, having arrived there, the light of those that shared his destiny were there to help him in his time of doubts and need.”You didn’t kill him!, it wasn’t your fault!, I am sure there is something else out there!”
“We are not done yet Gex, keep your head up high, you have also managed this far!, you can’t give up!”Rexshik soon reached him as well, more voices echoing on his mind.
“You know we are here for you, no matter what the peril is, if we have to bring someone down and get them back... That’s what we shall do!” Elyra spoke, voices and more voices reaching it.
“Elyra... Dorumon... Rex...” He barely could speak up, shivering on place as he struggled to move at all, slowly raising up.
“You can do it Bro!, I know that because I have seen you do it again and again!, this is not the end.. Just hang in there!” Kano spoke up as well.
“Gex!, please... d-don’t give up!, we need you... Everyone here believes in you!”Sonia spoke as well, the many voices finally reaching the umbreon.
“You are not weak, this is just another someone that is pushing you down... But if we have to fight... Then this is something we cannot afford to lose!” Roxas nodded at him, so many voices.
“E-Everyone...” Gex looked back, it was all of his friends ready to fight even though their lights surely didn’t fully reach him and their spirits were with him.
“Yes... We are here Gex... You are never truly alone!” Jenna smiled and helped him up. Isaias nodding at him.
“Your friends gave me life... I will give you the energy that they did to help me out... You also are important to us you can’t fail here.”The curious Ninetales and vaporeon hybrid smiled warmly at him, the veedramon nodding at him.
“It’s time to strike back!, Gex give it your all!” The lion nodded and smiled at him, all of his friends had guided him so far... This couldn’t end here, in not a million years.
“Guys... You are right...” Even when none of them were together, their souls and feelings reached to aid him through the darkest of times, the veedramon roared as he managed to evolve into Ulforce Veedramon, the blue giant roaring and going after the Venom Myotismon, the duo of Royal knights fighting back against him, they were going to make him pay.
“Urgh!, imposible!, you... You won’t defeat me like this!”He was throughly beaten up by the duo, the only ones that could actually fight while the others
“I will free you from your prison... And I will get you back to us, ZACKARIE!!!” The battle ended, and the desert dissappeared, only Jesmon and him being in the middle of nowhere, the souls of his friends helped him to stand up, as Jesmon slowly de-digivolved back into a baby digimon.
“Thank you Hacku... And everyone...” He sighed a bit as he looked around, he had to go back to all of them, this was a weird end for their struggle. They had the idea though, that Zackarie was out there, but he wasn’t where they were, Venom myotismon dissappeared into thin air, probably becomming an egg somewhere...

The Deep Digimon Lore We All Missed Out On
The short-lived WonderSwan was an anomaly in the world of anime-inspired games. As previously discussed, the WonderSwan was a delightfully niche handheld produced by Bandai during its console-making heyday. Last time we covered Neon Genesis Evangelion’s bizarre pet-raising simulation role-playing game, but when it comes to pet-raising games and Bandai, the true heavy-hitter isn’t Eva - it’s Digimon. And boy, did Digimon have a weirdly specific storytelling angle for the WonderSwan.
Memorable protagonist Ryo Akiyama gets his Digivice
The Expanded Universe
The original Digimon handheld pet toy debuted in 1997, about one year from Tamagotchi’s 1996 release in Japan. Because what’s the fun of raising virtual pets if they can’t beat each other up? For the unfamiliar, the premise is very simple: you raise your own digital monster (hence the shortening “Digimon”) and can connect to other Digimon to fight. Your Digimon evolves, becomes stronger, and maybe looks like a cyberpunk dinosaur. But this was only the start of a huge multi-media franchise push from Bandai. A beloved anime series called Digimon Adventure debuted in 1999, further catapulting the Digimon brand into the LCD-screen obsessed minds of kids everywhere.
The West was going through an intense "gotta catch 'em all" craze at the time, so naturally, it was a hit over here. But we never got the whole picture. See, in Japan, the WonderSwan released just in time for the anime, leading to a beautiful nosedive into the first of the Digimon WonderSwan role-playing games Japan got: Digimon Adventure: Anode/Cathode Tamer.
“Tamer” - that’s right, digifans! This series has everything to do with your favorite Digimon character we all know and love, Ryo Akiyama. Just another kid on the internet, suddenly zapped into the Narnia-esque world of killing literal computer viruses at fourteen years-old. In standard Digimon fashion, you collect monsters, fight bosses, gain levels, rinse and repeat. It's technically a RPG for little kids, okay?
Veedramon versus Numemon in Anode/Cathode Tamer
Anode/Cathode Tamer follows a basic premise: Ryo Akiyama is just a normal kid until Agumon (a tiny Digimon dinosaur) drags him into the Digital World. Perfectly normal. But an evil Digimon called Millenniummon literally captures all of the Chosen Children (read: important characters) and now Ryo has to save the world. I don’t remember this arc in Digimon Adventure, but don’t worry, as sitting complacent in the canon isn’t exactly a goal of these games. Who the heck is Tai, anyways?
The Digimon WonderSwan games, unlike many spin-off games like the aforementioned Evangelion sim, actually contributed to the anime narrative. Supposedly. Four of these games were released between 1999 and 2001, coinciding with the release of Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, and happily leading up to Digimon Tamers. And these games are perhaps the weirdest decisions Bandai’s ever made when it came to expanding the franchise's lore.
Ad for Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers (note Ken's different design)
Quite a few other popular anime were jumping on the WonderSwan bandwagon at the time. This includes a Hunter x Hunter role-playing game, a One Piece fighting game, and a handful -f random Mobile Suit Gundam titles. But the Digimon WonderSwan games take the cake when it comes to delivery — little did fans of the anime series know that these games would introduce us to “Digimon Kaiser” Ken Ichijouji, a major character for the highly anticipated Adventure 02. Except, of course, he was a little different. Not an evil baddie, yet, for one. Yay plot relevant friendship!
The second and third game give Ken a backstory that takes place supposedly before the events of Adventure 02. Ken and Ryo fight even more evil Digimon, get teleported outside of the Digital World, somehow return, and have a weird break-up. Think of the plot as vaguely canonical, somewhere in the ether between the Angela Anaconda skit and Barenaked Ladies’ hit single “One Week” of deep anime lore. It makes sense if you don’t think too hard about it.
Instant Lore: Just Add Flashbacks
Historically, Digimon video games haven’t been too deeply rooted in the anime series. During the WonderSwan’s first year, Digimon World for the Playstation was also released, and that had absolutely no association with the anime. A completely unrelated game for the WonderSwan would’ve been absolutely fine - so why the need to convolute the anime series plot even more with a role-playing game?
For the sake of world-building and, shockingly enough, actually introducing Ryo into the anime two years after the initial WonderSwan game's release. Surprise!
Ryo finally in Digimon Tamers (aka scarf random guy)
Rather than use some of Digimon Adventure’s staple villains, the WonderSwan titles primarily focus on the evil antics of Millenniumon and Diaboromon. Diaboromon, of course, is the main antagonist of the Digimon movie Our War Game - but for all the hype Millenniumon gets in the WonderSwan games, he’s only shown in a brief flashback during Adventure 02. Ryo isn’t even given a speaking role until late into Digimon Tamers’ 2001-2002 broadcast. So much for being important. Not even a mention in Digimon Tri.
The sudden ending of Ryo’s story might’ve sadly been the result of the WonderSwan’s lack of sales, but that’s the reality of being a lesser-known spin-off character vying for the spotlight. The Digimon WonderSwan games are a strange snapshot of an era where companies vaguely tried aligning the stories of media spin-offs and shows together.
And it worked. Sorta. Risky, but true to Digimon's spirit.
The weird niche of the Digimon WonderSwan games isn’t uncharacteristic. The WonderSwan, with its library of unique anime titles, was a love letter to side-characters and obscure spin-offs. The adventures of Ryo and Ken might’ve not sat well with the anime, but it was an attempt to bridge a gap most series wouldn’t risk. Luckily, more projects are being announced for Digimon Adventure, breathing new life into the franchise. We might even be lucky enough to see Ryo and friends return. Time will tell.

👘!
Although Roxas keeps his big black coat, it has been torn a lot of times due to his several changes, his wings had made several torns to it on his back and always tries to fix it, Gex and the others try their best to help him but sometimes refuses to do so, it’s a reminder of his past that keeps getting broken over and over.
Gex’s scarf is very special very similar to barney’s backpack that keeps everything and anything on it, sometimes it could be seen planets or figures of those important to him, represents a lot to the veedramon/Umbreon.
Fox keeps a lot of his clothes around and likes to change them from time to time, although he tries to keep most of his things well organized, he ends up making a mess.
