Morgendämmerung

Es war nur ein kurzer Gedanke, der meine ganze Situation ins Wanken brachte. Was wenn das alles hier nicht echt ist? Was wenn es nur ein Traum war? „Geh die Merkmale durch…“ Was spricht für einen Traum? Ich sah auf meine Hände. Ein Wirrwarr das vor meinen Augen verschwamm, aber das könne auch genau so gut an den Medikamenten liegen. Die aufgehende Morgensonne drang durch das Fenster und tauchte den Raum in einen Blutroten Schein. Alles wirke so bedrohlich, dass sich mein Magen immer mehr zusammenzog. Er öffnete die Tür nun ganz und trat in das Zimmer. Mir rann kalter Schweiß von der Stirn und ich wusste nicht was das alles zu bedeuten hatte. Mein ganzes Leben schien wie ausradiert. Ich hatte weder eine Erinnerung an das was ich zuvor erlebt hatte noch wusste ich was in den nächsten Minuten passieren würde. „Du suchst nach Antworten, nicht wahr?“ fragte der Mann, der noch immer nur eine Silhouette in der Tür war. Mein Kopf wollte antworten aber mein Mund verweigerte seinen Dienst. Nein viel mehr stellte ich fest, dass ich garkeinen Mund besaß. „Ich werde dir alles erklären aber wir haben nicht viel Zeit. Er beginnt schon das Interesse zu verlieren“ sagte die Silhouette. Der Mann kam näher, aber nun konnte ich zu meinem Entsetzen feststellen das er wirklich nicht mehr als ein Umriss war. Er war ein Schatten und ich konnte mir beim besten Willen nicht erklären was ich tun sollte, um aus diesem Alptraum zu erwachen. „Wir beide sind nicht real. Das ist das Problem“ sagte der Schatten und senke den Kopf. „Wir sind nur zwei sehr sparsam gestaltete Charaktere in einem Entwurf einer Kurzgeschichte. Es würde mich überraschen, wenn er sie überhaupt zu ende schreibt“. Der Schatten bildete mit seinen Händen eine Art Trichter vor dem Mund um noch lauter Richtung Decke zu Schreien. „Hörst du? Du Arschloch? Was ist das für eine Merkwürdige Scheiße, die du schreibst? Was soll das? Ist das Kunst? Denkst du, du wärst H.P. Lovecraft?“. Der Schatten wirkte ärgerlich.“ Wenn er jetzt aufhört zu schreiben dann stecken wir hier für immer fest und nach Happy End sieht es in diesem Setup Garnichts aus. Der Schatten schrie lauter „Du verdammtes Arschloch jetzt bring die Geschichte zu Ende“ Plötzlich schlug eine Atombombe ein und tötete alle beteiligten.

i know it’s like years old at this point but i love that one collab mumbo and grian did with tommyinnit bc it’s like the single most concentrated example i’ve seen of mumbo’s Chaos Nullification Powers

you get to see a bit of it on hermitcraft, mostly via his interactions with grian, but until seeing that collab it didn’t really hit me just how completely mumbo can no-sell other people’s attempts to control a situation. tommyinnit is possibly the single shoutiest, most chaotic minecraft youtuber out there, and in most videos i’ve seen he pretty much overwhelms everyone else and sets the tone for interactions because of this. but mumbo just. doesn’t let him. no matter how much tommy escalates in intensity, mumbo reacts with *exactly* the same energy he always does. grian largely comes across in the whole video as annoyed and reluctant to engage with the whole thing, but mumbo’s not even affected. he just rolls with anything he finds funny and basically ignores anything he disapproves of, only seeming more and more unflappable the harder anyone tries to get a rise out of him.

AND imo, this is the key to my favorite interpretation of him as a character

see, when the people around him are being more reasonable/calm, i think mumbo often comes across as anxious and a bit easily overwhelmed. the thing is, his nervous wet cat vibes do not scale. he has one setting. his responses to the last life ‘ah-ha!’ jokes and to hermitcraft 8 starting to crumble to pieces under a falling moon are almost identical.

mumbo jumbo is inexorably and eternally Just Some Guy, but that gets stranger and stranger the weirder his surroundings become. the giggly incredulousness that makes him an easy target for goofy puns looks Very different when it’s also his reaction to the impending end of the world.

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. They would have loved to tell you about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut!”
