it has come to my attention that some people might not know that @frogofalltime is my irl boyfriend/queerplatonic partner
we did not meet on tumblr, we met irl at university and bonded over our in depth knowledge of niche tumblr memes that have been reposted to pinterest and instagram (among other things). we promised that if one of us got tumblr, the other would too. @wiggles-mcgee, who is also an irl friend of both me and binya, convinced him to get a tumblr account so i was legally obligated to get one as well
binya was literally At My House today, and is here at some point on most days for that matter
so. yeah. just to clear that up lmao

(JTA) — Binya Kóatz remembers the first time she saw a woman wearing tzitzit. While attending Friday night services at a Jewish Renewal synagogue in Berkeley, she noticed the long ritual fringes worn by some observant Jews — historically men — dangling below a friend’s short shorts.
“That was the first time I really realized how feminine just having tassels dangling off you can look and be,” recalled Kóatz, an artist and activist based in the Bay Area. “That is both deeply reverent and irreverent all at once, and there’s a deep holiness of what’s happening here.”
Since that moment about seven years ago, Kóatz has been inspired to wear tzitzit every day. But she has been less inspired by the offerings available in online and brick-and-mortar Judaica shops, where the fringes are typically attached to shapeless white tunics meant to be worn under men’s clothing.
So in 2022, when she was asked to test new prototypes for the Tzitzit Project, an art initiative to create tzitzit and their associated garment for a variety of bodies, genders and religious denominations, Kóatz jumped at the chance. The project’s first products went on sale last month.
“This is a beautiful example of queers making stuff for ourselves,” Kóatz said. “I think it’s amazing that queers are making halachically sound garments that are also ones that we want to wear and that align with our culture and style and vibrancy.”
Jewish law, or halacha, requires that people who wear four-cornered garments — say, a tunic worn by an ancient shepherd — must attach fringes to each corner. The commandment is biblical: “Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages” (Numbers 15:37-41) When garments that lack corners came into fashion, many Jews responded by using tzitzit only when wearing a tallit, or prayer shawl, which has four corners.
But more observant Jews adopted the practice of wearing an additional four-cornered garment for the sole purpose of fulfilling the commandment to tie fringes to one’s clothes. Called a tallit katan, or small prayer shawl, the garment is designed to be worn under one’s clothes and can be purchased at Judaica stores or online for less than $15. The fringes represent the 613 commandments of the Torah, and it is customary to hold them and kiss them at certain points while reciting the Shema prayer.
“They just remind me of my obligations, my mitzvot, and my inherent holiness,” Kóatz said. “That’s the point, you see your tzitzit and you remember everything that it means — all the obligations and beauty of being a Jew in this world.”
The California-based artists behind the Tzitzit Project had a hunch that the ritual garment could appeal to a more diverse set of observant Jews than the Orthodox men to whom the mass-produced options are marketed. Julie Weitz and Jill Spector had previously collaborated on the costumes for Weitz’s 2019 “My Golem” performance art project that uses the mythical Jewish creature to explore contemporary issues. In one installment of the project focused on nature, “Prayer for Burnt Forests,” Weitz’s character ties a tallit katan around a fallen tree and wraps the tzitzit around its branches.
“I was so moved by how that garment transformed my performance,” Weitz said, adding that she wanted to find more ways to incorporate the garment into her life.
The Tzitzit Project joins other initiatives meant to explore and expand the use of tzitzit. A 2020 podcast called Fringes featured interviews with a dozen trans and gender non-conforming Jews about their experiences with Jewish ritual garments. (Kóatz was a guest.) Meanwhile, an online store, Netzitzot, has since 2014 sold tzitzit designed for women’s bodies, made from modified H&M undershirts.
The Tzitzit Project goes further and sells complete garments that take into account the feedback of testers including Kóatz — in three colors and two lengths, full and cropped, as well as other customization options related to a wearer’s style and religious practices. (The garments cost $100, but a sliding scale for people with financial constraints can bring the price as far down as $36.)
Spector and Weitz found that the trial users were especially excited by the idea that the tzitzit could be available in bright colors, and loved how soft the fabric felt on their bodies, compared to how itchy and ill-fitting they found traditional ones to be. They also liked that each garment could be worn under other clothing or as a more daring top on its own.
To Weitz, those attributes are essential to her goal of “queering” tzitzit.
“Queering something also has to do with an embrace of how you wear things and how you move your body in space and being proud of that and not carrying any shame around that,” she said. “And I think that that stylization is really distinct. All those gender-conventional tzitzit for men — they’re not about style, they’re not about reimagining how you can move your body.”
For Chelsea Mandell, a rabbinical student at the Academy of Jewish Religion in Los Angeles who is nonbinary, the Tzitzit Project is creating Jewish ritual objects of great power.
“It deepens the meaning and it just feels more radically spiritual to me, when it’s handmade by somebody I’ve met, aimed for somebody like me,” said Mandell, who was a product tester.
Whether the garments meet the requirements of Jewish law is a separate issue. Traditional interpretations of the law hold that the string must have been made specifically for tzitzit, for example — but it’s not clear on the project’s website whether the string it uses was sourced that way. (The project’s Instagram page indicates that the wool is spun by a Jewish fiber artist who is also the brother of the alt-rocker Beck.)
“It is not obvious from their website which options are halachically valid and which options are not,” said Avigayil Halpern, a rabbinical student who began wearing tzitzit and tefillin at her Modern Orthodox high school in 2013 when she was 16 and now is seen as a leader in the movement to widen their use.
“And I think it’s important that queer people in particular have as much access to knowledge about Torah and mitzvot as they’re embracing mitzvot.”
Weitz explained that there are multiple options for the strings — Tencel, cotton or hand-spun wool — depending on what customers prefer, for their comfort and for their observance preferences.
“It comes down to interpretation,” she said. “For some, tzitzit tied with string not made for the purpose of tying, but with the prayer said, is kosher enough. For others, the wool spun for the purpose of tying is important.”
Despite her concerns about its handling of Jewish law, Halpern said she saw the appeal of the Tzitzit Project, with which she has not been involved.
“For me and for a lot of other queer people, wearing something that is typically associated with Jewish masculinity — it has a gender element,” explained Halpern, a fourth-year student at Hadar, the egalitarian yeshiva in New York.
“If you take it out of the Jewish framework, there is something very femme and glamorous and kind of fun in the ways that dressing up and wearing things that are twirly is just really joyful for a lot of people,” she said.
For some, wearing tzitzit is just about halachic egalitarian practice, and not about queering Jewish ritual items. Rachel Schwartz, a straight cisgender woman, first became drawn to tzitzit while studying at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem in 2018. There, young men who were engaging more intensively with Jewish law and tradition than they had in the past began to adopt the garments, and Schwartz found herself wondering why she had embraced egalitarian religious practices in all ways but this one.
“One night, I took one of my tank tops and I cut it up halfway to make the square that it needed. I found some cool bandanas at a store and I sewed on corners,” Schwartz recalled. “And I bought the tzitzit at one of those shops on Ben Yehuda and I just did it and it was awesome.”
Schwartz’s experience encapsulates both the promise and the potential peril of donning tzitzit for people from groups that historically have not worn the fringes. Other women at the Conservative Yeshiva were so interested in her tzitzit that she ran a workshop where she taught them how to make the undergarment. But she drew so many critical comments from men on the streets of Jerusalem that she ultimately gave up wearing tzitzit publicly.
“I couldn’t just keep on walking around like that anymore. I was tired of the comments,” Schwartz said. “I couldn’t handle it anymore.”
Rachel Davidson, a Reconstructionist rabbi working as a chaplain in health care in Ohio, started consistently wearing a tallit katan in her mid-20s. Like Kóatz, she ordered her first one from Netzitzot.
“I would love to see a world where tallitot katanot that are shaped for non cis-male bodies are freely available and are affordable,” Davidson said. “I just think it’s such a beautiful mitzvah. I would love it if more people engaged with it.”
Kóatz believes that’s not only possible but natural. As a trans woman, she said she is drawn to tzitzit in part because of the way they bring Jewish tradition into contact with contemporary ideas about gender.
“Queers are always called ‘fringe,’” she said. “And here you have a garment which is literally like ‘kiss the fringes.’ The fringes are holy.”

2 Chronicles 20: 14-19. "The Ecclesiastics."
Tumblr media
14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.
15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.
17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’”
18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord.
19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.
Jahaziel= "God is a Visionary's Window."
חזה
The verb חזה (haza) means to see or behold. Noun חזה (hozeh) means seer or visionary. Nouns חזות (hazot), חזות (hazut), חזיון (hizzayon) and מחזה (mahazeh) mean vision, anything between the mere act of seeing to experiencing a prophetic apparition. The noun מחזה (meheza) literally describes a place or instrument of vision and is the word for window.
Zecharaiah= Who offer the Regalia back to Him through the Generations
זכר
The verb זכר (zakar) means to remember, to deliberately review, or to cause to remember or review — by means of public oration, urging and pleading, physical memorials, and so on.
Noun זכר (zeker) means remembrance, memory, memorial or invocation. Noun זכרון (zikkaron) or זכרן (zikkaron) denotes a memorial or token — a memorial day, altar-plates, stones, crowns, books, proof of citizenship, even spoils of war. Noun אזכרה ('azkara) refers to a memorial-offering.
Noun זכור (zakur) and noun and adjective זכר (zakar) mean male. This noun denotes the male of humans and animals, and marvelously illustrates the parallel between sexual reproduction and the learning process,
Benaiah= What is built by God reinforces what is built by God
בנה
The verb בנה (bana) means to build, mostly of stone buildings and thus of houses and thus of families and dynasties: hence the association between this verb and the nouns אבן ('eben), stone, and בן (ben), son.
Noun בניה (binya) means a building in the sense of a structure. Noun מבנה (mibneh) means building in the sense of place of building. Noun תבנית (tabnit) means building in the sense of the act of building: a construction, pattern or image.
Jeiel= the Nation that resonates between these elements becomes a vibrant living thing.
חיה
The verb חיה (haya) means to live and life is all about resonance between elements — molecules working together to make a living cell, cells working together to make a living organism and human minds working together to make a living nation.
Adjective חי (hay) means living and adjective חיה (hayeh) means lively. Noun חיה (hayya) means life or living thing, and may also be used to describe a vibrant community. Plural noun חיים (hayyim) literally means livings but describes the whole palette of activities a living being engages in: one's making-a-living.
Mattahniah, a Levite= Those who know, understand, and contribute their brilliances are the Parents of its Freedoms
נתן
The shape-shifting verb נתן (natan) means to give in a broad bouquet of senses, from regular giving or bestowing, to setting or putting, to transforming one thing or situation into another.
This verb's three nouns מתן (mattan), מתנה (mattana) and מתת (mattat) all mean gift, again broadly ranging from a regular present to an offering to an innate talent (being "gifted").
Asaph= They are the hive, the bees, the honeycomb and the honey which is taken
אסף
The verb אסף ('asap), means to gather or collect, mostly in reference to harvests, and with a connotation of removal. The nouns אסף ('osep), אסיף ('asip), אסף ('asop), אספה ('asepa), אספה ('assupa) and אספסף ('asapsup) all express nuances of the act of gathering, things gathered, collections or storages. Also note the similarities in form with the ספף  סוף  ספה (spp swp sph) cluster of words, which all have to do with the extraction of one continuum from another.
Pass of Ziz=
צוץ  ציץ
The verb צוץ (sus) or ציץ (sys) means to bloom or blossom and the noun ציץ (sis) means flower or blossom. But instead of a "flowering" or emerging of petals, these words for flower appear to mostly commemorate the dropping of petals, which is what happens when a pretty blossom collapses and turns into a juicy, seed-bearing fruit. The noun ציצת (sisit) describes a bundle of hair or a tassel on a garment.
Jeruel= Impulses towards the Instructions
ירה  ירא
The verb ירה (yara) describes the bringing about of a unified effect by means of many little impulses (arrows, stones, words, instructions, rain drops, and so on). Noun יורה (yoreh) refers to rain that falls during the first period of the agricultural year, when seedlings bud but don't bear fruit yet. Noun מורה (moreh) may either also refer to early rain, or it means teacher, who is a person who teaches children who can't think for themselves yet. Noun תורה (tora), refers to any set of instructions (hence the familiar word Torah).
The verb ירא (yara') describes the same process, but rather from the perspective of the receiving "soil": to revere, to pay heed to, and in extreme cases: to fear. Nouns יראה (yir'a), מורא (mora') and מורה (mora) cover the broad spectrum between reverence and fear, between anything awe-inspiring and anything terrifying.
The Tanakh says anyone who passes by the "Unopened Blossom" of the future cannot resist the impulse to want to be a grown up- to look, walk, and talk in the manner of a human male of outstanding natural beauty.
When brutes, briggands and fools respond to theirs and come to town, trying to rob others of their instincts to be fully formed and satisfy their curiosity about all the ways they might be happy during this lifetime, then the Law, the judges, the officers, the courts, the Administrators have to defer to the Ordinances and do what they must to turn back all threats to the field and to the hive.
Those who value protecting civilization from disturbances understand the first fortress wall is thought leadership. Hope, devotion, propriety, these are the Regal Thoughts a civilized people need to see buzzing about in the heads of their leaders and should challengers emerge, then they need to see them challenged.
The Tanakh says behind good leaders, men by whom God makes His Plans into "structures" are what are called Kohatites and Korahites, "accumulated knowledge and memory".
They roughly correspond to the Congregation of the Temple, the Rabbis, all the ecclesiastics -persons in search of ways to know God and be sovereign, at peace, learned, sociable and loving.
Behind the willpower of every government employee must be one of these ecclesiastics that understands how the Vision works, and why it must linger in our lives like a tempting fragrance.

1 Chronicles 15: 23-29. "The Beach."
Tumblr media
What is the Ark, anyway? In the Torah, the Ark is the Vault, the very same God used In the Beginning to separate chaos from an orderly creation. For this purpose He illuminated...everything! Starting with a thought, "Let there be Light", there Light was, and Light created this threshold, what the Torah calls a Beach Along the Black Sea and within its sand life is able to exist. The human mind uses the Ark to reach this Beach.
Any reference to the Ark refers directly to this, how Thoughts of Light beach the Self and cause it to give life. The Doorkeepers of the Ark are the senses, the ears in particular but the eyes, nostrils, mouth and other entrances are also capable of becoming fully enlightened.
Noach took an Ark, a Vehicle of Light with all the possible aspects of noble human nature up the mountain so it had the chance for a new start. We are all hidden inside that Ark. Soon we must open the doors and exit:
23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark.
Berekiah=the freedom one needs to become oneself
Elkanah="to weave into a bustling economy."
קנן
The verb קנן (qanan) isn't used in the Bible but it appears to tell of the weaving of many strands into a dynamic and interlocked network. These strands may be reeds and twigs that a bird weaves into a nest, or it may be acts of trade and routes of commerce that together combine into a bustling economy. Noun קן (qen) means nest, and verb קנן (qinnen) means to make a nest.
God wants us all to be free to find ourselves and to make of the effort a thriving economy that is an "interlocked network" of all the sciences, arts, and work does with one's hands and limbs generating some dividend for the system.
Combine these with alamoth and sheminith, "To find what is hidden, and to know its essential nature" are Four Directions God is unveiling to us for the first time in thousands of years.
North, what is hidden, is alamoth.
East ,what is revealed, is sheminith.
South, what is awake is berechiah.
West, what is enlightened, is Elkanah, the City.
These are supposed to be the legacies inherited by the students of the Torah Academy.
24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God.
25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing.
Shebaniah= Yah Rejuvenates, Young In Yah, Yah Returned, Restore Us O Yah
Joshaphat=to govern
שפט
The verb שפט (shapat) means to judge or govern. Nouns שפט (shepet) and שפוט (shepot) mean judgment in the penal sense. Noun משפט (mishpat) denotes a ruling in a general sense; an ordinance or even custom or manner.
Nethanel=through regular bestowing
נתן
The shape-shifting verb נתן (natan) means to give in a broad bouquet of senses, from regular giving or bestowing, to setting or putting, to transforming one thing or situation into another.
Amasai=and bearing of the burden
עמש  אמס
Both the verbs עמש ('amas) and עמס ('amas) mean to load or carry a load. Noun מעמסה (ma'amasa) means load or burden.
Zechariah=through our memories and invocations of the ordinances
Benaiah=and the building of the House
Eliezer=God of help
Obed-Edom "Servant of the Red One" and Jehiah the resonance between elements" were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.
Now we learn more about this term, Obed Edom "the Servant of the Red One". It is dervived from the following:
עבד
The verb עבד ('abad) means to work or serve, and the noun עבד ('ebed) denotes someone who works: from a slave to a hired expert. The Greek equivalent of this noun is δουλος (doulos).
דמם
The root דמם (ddm) is all about beginnings — or rather the simplicity from whence complexity arises — from being still before the noise starts to being monochromatic before color vision starts. Verb דמם (damam) means to be still, noun דממה (demama) denotes calmness and דמה (dumma) denotes a silenced person. Noun דומה (duma) describes the silence of death, noun דומיה or דמיה (dumiya) the silence of waiting and noun דומם (dumam) the silence of inertia or inactivity.
We are all waiting for life to start over. We have been through a lot, and as soon as those trumpets blow, informing the world we are all clear, there is no doubt everyone is ready to celebrate their new lives.
But before we pull out the confetti and the condoms, God says first, The Sacrifice:
26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed.
Seven of anything are the Seven Days of Creation, the amount of time and the stages required for sentient life to emerge on the planet.
Each Day has a merit associated with it. Each one has obstacles. Bulls are rotten attitudes of the immature sort, rams are combative, testoserone at work.
Every one of us possesses animalistic tendencies, and these must be consumed on the altar of G‑d. We are obliged to slay our inner animal, and humanize ourselves by working on developing our character traits, until the beast within us has been neutralized—and better yet, sanctified.
What exactly does this mean? The verse continues, “from the cattle or from the flock, shall you bring your offering.” An individual may behave like “cattle,” a goring bull, trampling on everyone and everything in its way. He is the proverbial bull in a china closet, stomping, aggressive, bullying, domineering, and utterly insensitive to people’s feelings.
To understand what it means to be the ram is to understand that we as Jews have a global responsibility to leave our sacred enclaves and go out in the world and stand in the breach of injustice.
This is the secret of the akedah. Today we are all the ram, caught up with one another, tangled in one another’s horns. We need each other, we need to be together, and we need to believe that our togetherness can craft a world worthy of our highest aspirations. The akedah is not simply a test of Abraham’s irrational faith, but a call to partnership with God in the messiness of life.
27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.
We are back to discussiong what is of the essence and that is relationship with what is beautiful without much embellishment:
Linen is white, and therefore alludes to the soul's basic, essential love of G‑d, which transcends reason, just as white is the background against which all other colors may be seen. The soul's basic, essential love for G‑d is what makes us capable of self-sacrifice for G‑d's honor, inasmuch as it expresses our unassailable bond with G‑d.
28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.
29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.
There is still long and long to go: Michal means to know God as one without a second, Saul is to ask God for permission to know him...
מה  מי
The interrogative pronoun מה (ma) asks "what?" Its counterpart מי (mi) asks "who?" The latter pronoun is spelled the same as the construct-plural form of מים (mayim) and thus also means "waters of ...". Its opposite, namely dry land, signifies certainty and mental footing. A similar particle מו (mo) combines with the usual prefixes to form poetic equivalents of these particles.
כ  כי  כה
The prefix כ (ke) means "as if" or "like." The particle כי (ki) means "in that," both in the sense of "because" and "when." The adverb כה (koh) means "thus."
It's good if everyone is wearing linen and having a good time, but the Tanakh says something else has to happen if the Dry Land and all the beauty upon it are going to last.
"Do not treat other men like they are gods." That is what.

Why Ruskin Bond will always remain our favorite
From our early school days to the age of stepping into our respective career paths - we all grow up undergoing many changes. But only the writings of Ruskin Bond remain our constant companion. The close relationship between Ruskin Bond and us emerged slowly. The first introduction happened through textbooks, mostly after which people regularly saw a curious kid sitting at the corner of a bookstore with amazement in his eyes. And this amazement continued to appear on our faces every time we opened a book by Ruskin Bond. Unknowingly, we formed a strong bond with our favorite, Ruskin Bond.
Tumblr media
It's pretty impossible not to smell the hills, our childhood, winter breezes, the old and rusty cottages in his words. Ruskin Bond's stories feel like a legit time machine that never fails to transport us into a newer world or the world of the past. His stories made us enjoy natural affection, subtleties, and the lucid pleasures of life without delving into the materialistic way of living. So, let's try to get lost in the world of Bond and relive our sweetest memories again to remind ourselves why he will always be our most favourite.
Nature as its best
"Never mind. Men come and go. The mountains remain." - "Our trees still grow in Dehra."
Due to his intimate understanding of nature, Ruskin Bond successfully presents how nature could actively become a significant part of a person's well-being. We can't help feeling the solitude and the peaceful purity of being amidst the forlorn mountains, the Magpies, the beautiful forest birds, and the freshness of trees while reading his stories. Nature in his reports does not only provide background, but it becomes a character itself. He allows the free-flowing river, the little birds, the wildflowers, the sky, and every aspect of nature to convey their own messages to the readers.
That's why we perceive nature as a catalyst for healing our minds and making us transcend in the spiritual world. So, in most of his stories, he tries to convey the message of preserving nature. For example, in "The Coral Tree," Ruskin Bond has painted an essential aspect of teaching children the importance of planting and nurturing trees, thus, making a lasting partnership with man and nature.
Many great critics of our generation have declared the significant presence of the pantheistic nature approach in Bond's writings. He profoundly portrays both the nurturing and the destructive sides of Nature in his stories like "The Blue Umbrella," "Time Stops at Shamli," "The Angry River," "Rain in the Mountains," "Roads to Mussoorie," "The Room on the Roof" and many others. It's evidently clear that nature is the Muse of Ruskin Bond, and he will continue to strengthen the friendship between us and nature.
Bond's Art of Characterization
One of the most captivating qualities of Bond's stories that make them so relatable is his art of characterization. He amazingly creates a fellowship between the reader and the characters by presenting various characters and showing every character's development through the thick and thin of life. The most amazing part is that his feelings are rooted in reality and possess a breadth of genuineness without pretensions.
Ruskin Bond is the master of creating various characters who fall into every social and economic background of the vast spectrum of our society. He beautifully paints the difference between the characters belonging to both the backward and underprivileged class and the flourishing upper-class. But most surprisingly, each character's life becomes significantly inspiring to the readers because of their physical and mental struggles, their realization and acceptance, and their close connection with their conscience. Our eyes suddenly get wet whenever we go through the brief encounter of the two potential lovers in "The Eyes are not Here." Similarly, we feel the same adrenaline rush while witnessing Binya's adventurous journey down the stream to save her most precious possession in "The Blue Umbrella."
Ruskin Bond's excellent insight into human psychology makes the readers understand exactly what the character is going through. That's what makes it way easier to discover the characters' reasons, hesitations, dilemmas, joy, anxiety, happiness, and all sorts of emotions. We somehow get attached to the characters without consciously knowing it and start to fascinate them most realistically.
Accurate Representation of the Indian Society
Bond's literary works serve a great purpose of expressing the social, economic, and political issues concerning the public and the country at large. He conveys the different opinions of the differently brought up characters in society in the most effective way. The state of India when it was under British rule, the bloodshed during partition, the ruins made by corruption, the conservative approach of the society, the superstitions, and the prevailing problems of dowry and child marriage - all have become an integral part of his writings. That's why his stories are considered proofs that aptly documented the then Indian society comprehensively.
Ruskin Bond's excellence also prevails in enriching the native language, bringing forth ethos and culture, and portraying the existing complexity of the socio-political scenario. At the grass-root level, his stories present a great insight into the ongoing social stigma without being a complete rant about problems only. His characters depict juxtaposition by making readers experience the constant tension that goes on within themselves between their rural and old values and the new urban moral code that they are exposed to.
Although Ruskin Bond Books is majorly known as one of the best writers of children's books, his adult and adolescent novels deal with the aspects we all go through in adulthood. For example, his "The Room on the Roof" brings up issues faced by the protagonist Rusty that had never been the table talk back in the 1950s. The life of Rusty resonates with us because we all have witnessed the problems like identity formation, wanting financial independence, emerging sexuality at some point in our lives. On the other hand, "The Room on the Roof" and its sequel, "The Young Vagrants," also successfully bring out the pain and loneliness of the orphan protagonist while depicting the prevailing social concerns such as racial and cultural differences, narrow-mindedness, and the social pretensions.
A Master of Stealing Children's Hearts
Risking Bond's fantastic insight into child psychology has contributed to making him our most favorite writer. The most incredible element found in his children's books is that he shows immense respect to a child's emotions, a thing which is not openly discussed or even given much value to. He captures the innocence of children in the best possible way while providing the utmost importance to the adventures, the hidden complexity, tragedies, and determination of the little minds. The self-seeking attitude of children is beautifully painted in the subtle yet strong words of Bond. "The Blue Umbrella" and "The Angry River" are perhaps the most outstanding examples for showing the strength and abilities children inherit along with the intricacies of life- all presented with a mesmerizing touch of simplicity. Through these stories, Ruskin Bond successfully raises a very pertinent question on the conviction of getting attached to trivial materialistic things of life, which exposes the futility of the entire concept.
Ruskin Bond is a master of depicting the innocence and simple pleasures of children, which contrasts with the cunning, shrewd, and envious nature of the adults in his children's books. It inspires the readers worldwide to adhere to the old pleasure-seeking and joyful spirit we have left in the past. The children's stories highlight the lessons of sympathy, kindness, and brotherhood among the readers of every age.
That's why Bond's significant contribution lies in the fact that Bond's children's stories do not only evoke happiness in kids, but adults also perceive the same amount of gleeful experience while reading them.
Conclusion -
Ruskin Bond's simple style of writing delves deep into our conscience. It is a potent weapon of his that beautifully depicts both the complexities and the ease of life. Bond never wants to "make readers toil and sweat" because he never believed in the concept of putting complex and unconventional words to sound more serious. In "It's a Wonderful Life," he shared why he always chooses to write simply. He also shared his views on social media regarding his writing style by saying, "I have always tried to achieve proses that are simple and conversational. Those who think this is easy should try it for themselves." It is always astonishing to see how the subject matters of Bond's writings are given such high importance without presenting them in a twisted form by using complex words. That's why his stories can be read repeatedly regardless of the reader's age, as the Ruskin Bond Stories have something interesting to offer you each time you turn the pages.

The Blue Umbrella- A Children’s Literature?
‘The Blue Umbrella’ is a simple yet beautiful novella about a young girl, Binya, who lives an ordinary life with her mother and brother in the hillside. She doesn’t go to school and takes care of her cows. One day, while searching for her grazing cows, an alluring blue umbrella catches her eye. She instantly falls in love with it. The umbrella belonged to a city lady, who had come to hillside for a picnic. Binya exchanges her lucky charm, a leopard’s claw pendant, with the lady for her blue umbrella. The umbrella becomes Binya’s most precious possession. It also becomes the talk of the village. The people began to envy her for the umbrella, especially the tea stall owner, Ram Bharose, who uses different means to acquire it but fails to do so. In the end, Binya, very kindly, gives her umbrella to Ram Bharose and he gives her a bear’s claw in return.
Bond has beautifully woven the story with the beads of simplicity, innocence, kindness and purity. The novel might seem like an ordinary children’s literature, but as the story unfolds before the reader, the extraordinary is revealed. It is about a small girl and a mere umbrella, but has the power to touch the chords of even the adults. Through its simple plot and simple characters, the novel deals with complex human emotions such as attachment, greed, jealousy, sacrifice and remorse.
The umbrella is very dear to Binya. She carries it everywhere- to the market and to the pasture grounds. She handles it with utmost care. Even when the umbrella becomes old, and its color begins to fade, Binya’s love for it remains unchanged. This shows how when humans are attached to something, they love it in every state.  At the same time, Binya lets the village people touch and carry the umbrella too. This simple act of the little girl sends the powerful message of kindness, trust and sharing to the readers.
Ram Bharose wants to own the umbrella at any cost and tries dirty tricks to acquire it. His failed attempts reveal his true nature and bring ruin to him. Binya could’ve chosen to hate him, however, she feels bad for him. She blames her love for the umbrella for his misery. She sacrifices her umbrella for Ram Bharose’s happiness. This act of Binya fills Ram Bharose with guilt and remorse. He gives Binya a bear's claw in return. It reveals a very deep rooted conscientious element of human nature. It shows goodness can be invoked through innocent acts in even the most corrupt people.
Ruskin Bond portrays the nature so vividly that it seems to come alive. It elucidates the lives of the mountain people. It shows how simple and inherently attached to nature they are. This is reflected in the pure behavior of Binya and her brother, Bijju. They are carefree children belonging to their village whole-heartedly. They are unlike the people of the plains who do not appreciate the nature enough. They know everyone in the village and everyone knows them. They roam around the fields and the market fearlessly.
‘The Blue Umbrella’ might seem very childish to some readers. However, the actual meanings and messages are hidden in the depths of the novella. Very talentedly, the author plays with the deeper strings of human nature through the character of a little girl. The novella is short, but leaves a powerful impression on the minds of the reader. The unexpected and generous act of Binya teaches the readers the joy of sharing, kindness, maturity and most importantly the art of letting go.

Book Review #18 A #bookreview by Ridlab Classics on "The Blue Umbrella" written by @ruskinbondofficial #theblueumbrella "The umbrella is like a flower, a great blue flower that had sprung up on the dry brown hillside."❤️ The Blue Umbrella is a short novella written by Ruskin Bond. He wrote his first novel The Room on the Roof at the age of 17 and recieved prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys Award for that. The narrative of the story carried us to the valleys of Himalaya. The protagonist of the story Binyadevi or Binya lives a simple life with her mother and her elder brother Vijjay or Bijju. One day she saw a beautiful blue umbrella when some picnickers came at the hills of Garhwal. She wanted it so badly that she was willing to exchange it for her lucky leopard's claw pendant. No one in the village had such a fine umbrella and Binya carried it everywhere with herself. The story beauitfully revolves around how she get attached with that umbrella and how a old shopkeeper Ram Bharosa have decided that by some means he must own the blue umbrella. The story ends by giving some beautiful social and personal messages to think about ourselves once again. The short and humorous novella captures life in a hill village of Garhwal- where ordinary chatacters become heroic, and others find opportunities to redeem themselves. The simplicity in writing, the characters have been etched as ordinary as one can get and that's what makes Bond's writing mesmerizing. It is a great book as a gift to any child. Additionally you can finish it reading within a hour. Why Trump will (probably) sign the spending deal

Why Trump will sign the spending deal — All you have to do is look at the latest Gallup poll showing the president’s approval rating rising from 37% to 44% after signing the last deal to end the shutdown. Views of the economy tanked during the shutdown, with just 44% saying conditions were getting better. After the shutdown? 54%.
Story Continued Below
If Trump hopes to win a second term he has to assume his fervent fans will believe whatever he says about the state of the wall (already built, being built, whatever). And he can’t risk his biggest strength – the economy – with shutdowns, trade wars and market sell-offs. This dynamic will be important all year.
Will the debt ever matter? — Neither party right now cares about the national debt, which just broke $22 trillion. Democrats are pushing hard in the opposite direction. And Republicans have largely given up after increasing the deficit with their tax cut. At the moment, there isn’t much reason to care with rates still low and the economy growing.
But what happens when we hit recession? Here was bond king Jeffrey Gundlach to Yahoo Finance on Wednesday: “[T]ypically, the debt-to-GDP ratio goes up about four percentage points during a recession. So it suggests the national debt would grow at around a 10% annual rate if we go into a normal average type of recession. That’s obviously a really big problem.”
By way of reference — Per the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the U.S. debt is now nearly the size of China, Germany and Japan’s economies combined.
** A message from the American Property Casualty Insurance Association: The insurance industry’s advocacy voice just got much stronger. The new organization speaks for 60 percent of the U.S. P/C insurance market. **

FIRST LOOK: GSE INSIDER TRADING ALLEGED — Public Citizen and Revolving Door Project today “are sending a letter to the Inspectors General of FHFA & Treasury Thursday calling for them to investigate the recent leaks and unusual stock market movements of the GSEs since Comptroller of the Currency Joseph Otting took the mantle of Acting FHFA Director.” See the letter here.
DAVID SOLOMON ON INEQUALITY — Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon to CNBC on taxing the rich: “I’m not going to speculate on how the tax law changes and evolves. But I will notice that over many decades, we’ve had very few significant changes in tax policy. We’ve just had one.”
CALABRIA WALKS IT BACK — Our Katy O’Donnell: “Mark Calabria, the White House’s nominee to take over the Federal Housing Finance Agency, will tell lawmakers Thursday that the views he has expressed as an academic would not guide his stewardship of the agency. …
“As an economist at the libertarian CATO Institute, Calabria has questioned the wisdom of both the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and securitization. He is a longtime skeptic of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Calabria will also emphasize his career as a Senate Banking Committee aide, pointing to legislation he worked on before leaving the committee in 2009.” Read more.
THE COST OF CREATING STEEL JOBS WITH TARIFFS — Our Jesse Chase-Lubitz: “Trump promised to revitalize the American steel industry and create jobs, jobs, jobs. Two years into his presidency, tariffs seem to be slowly bringing business back to U.S. companies, and even more slowly, creating jobs. That is coming at a heavy cost, says one analysis.
“Economists say Trump’s tariffs increased the price of steel products by 9 percent. However, steel users will pay an extra $650,000 for each job created, according to a recent study published by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.” Read more.
WHEN WALL STREET IS YOUR LANDLORD — Atlantic’s Alana Semuels: “Between 2011 and 2017, some of the world’s largest private-equity groups and hedge funds, as well as other large investors, spent a combined $36 billion on more than 200,000 homes in ailing markets across the country.
“In one Atlanta zip code, they bought almost 90 percent of the 7,500 homes sold between January 2011 and June 2012; today, institutional investors own at least one in five single-family rentals in some parts of the metro area” Read more.
TRANSITIONS: BINYA TO THE EDIT PAGE — Via the NYT: “After nine years of deciphering and describing the economy’s tumult in the newsroom, Binyamin Appelbaum will tell us what he really thinks as he joins the Times editorial board as lead writer on business and economics.” Read more.
TAX REVENUE DROPS; DEFICIT WIDENS — WSJ’s Kate Davidson: “Federal tax revenue declined 0.4% in 2018, the first full calendar year under the new tax law, despite robust economic growth and the lowest unemployment rate in nearly five decades. The Treasury Department said Wednesday federal revenue totaled $3.33 trillion last year, while federal spending totaled $4.2 trillion, a 4.4% increase from the previous year.
“That pushed the U.S. budget gap up to $873 billion for the 12 months that ended in December, compared with $680.8 billion during the same period a year earlier—a 28.2% increase. Last year was the highest deficit for a calendar year since 2012. … A strong economy typically leads to narrower deficits, as rising household income and corporate profits help boost tax collections, while spending on safety-net programs tends to decline.” Read more.
MALPASS’S DAYS AT BEAR — FT’s James Politi: “To his supporters inside and outside the Trump administration, Mr Malpass is the right man for the job: a supply-side economist who will refocus the multilateral lender on helping the world’s poorest countries. …
“But his record as an economist at Bear has attracted criticism, as it has included various controversial prescriptions, visceral criticism of multilateral institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund, and reassurances about the state of the credit markets even as his own investment bank was unravelling, leading to Bear’s eventual sale to JPMorgan Chase in 2008.” Read more.
FORMER TOP APPLIE EXEC CHARGED WITH INSIDER TRADING — Our Victoria Guida: “The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department … each filed charges against a former top official at Apple, alleging he profited off information about the company’s quarterly earnings before it was made public.
“Gene Daniel Levoff, who was Apple’s global head of corporate law and corporate secretary, traded Apple securities ahead of three earnings announcements in 2015 and 2016, making roughly $382,000, according to the SEC. For example, he avoided $345,000 in losses by selling $10 million in the company’s stock just before he knew Apple was set to disappoint on its iPhone sales, the complaint alleges.” Read more.
FED OFFICIAL: DON’T SLOW GROWTH — FT’s Sam Fleming: “The Federal Reserve needs to avoid inadvertently crimping US growth given rising nervousness among businesses about the outlook at home and abroad, a senior policymaker said.
“Raphael Bostic, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, said there had been a marked change in corporations’ mood since a year ago, as executives digest hazards including trade tensions and slowing growth in Europe and China. ‘It is important that we do not go too fast and act in a non-prudent way that winds up inadvertently restricting the economy,’ Mr Bostic said at the European Financial Forum in Dublin on Wednesday” Read more.
WALL STREET SHRUGS OFF BUYBACK WORRIES — Via Bloomberg: “U.S. equities put in their fourth straight session of gains as optimism over trade negotiations countered some of the jitters that Senator Marco Rubio triggered when he announced a bill to tax buybacks on equal footing with dividends.
“Rubio’s tweet Wednesday about his buyback proposal slowed an advance in the S&P 500 Index, but the benchmark still finished higher, even after Netflix dragged on the communication-services sector late in the day. The dollar gained and Treasuries edged lower as data showed U.S. inflation remained contained.” Read more.
SENATORS TRY TO REBUFF TRUMP ON RUSSIA — Reuters: “A bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced a bill on Wednesday that would impose stiff new sanctions on Russia over its meddling in U.S. elections and aggression against Ukraine, the latest congressional effort to push … Trump to ratchet up Washington’s response to Moscow.
“It was introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, as well as other members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It is a tougher version of legislation — dubbed the ‘sanctions bill from hell’ by Graham — the two lawmakers backed last year but which failed to pass.” Read more.
