Important to me
Sam Winchester x Reader
(Y/N): your name
(E/C): eye colour
(C/C): celeb crush
Tumblr media
Sam and Dean slowly descended the rusty black stairs, trying not to trip from exhaustion. Every nerve ending in their body was hypersensitive; their fingers and toes were cold; their eyes and heads pounded from lack of sleep; and a rotting stench was secreting from their overworn clothing. “Hey guys, how was the hunt?" you asked in a gentle voice to avoid elevating their migraine pain. Dean mumbled under his breath as he walked to his room; even Sam could only give a small smile and “tiring” as a response.
You’ve noticed how the boys have become more tired after their hunts. Maybe it was because you did all the research while they did all the dirty work, or simply because they were getting older. Either way, it’s been taking a toll on their health, and you know it wouldn’t be good in the long run.
Judging from their clothes, you assumed they’d be taking a shower before getting some shut-eye, but you didn’t want them to go to bed hungry.
Walking to the kitchen, you opened the white door of the fridge, which consisted of a few eggs, lettuce, and beer. Wow, no wonder these guys only eat out. Groaning, you grabbed your keys and coat, texting Sam and Dean that you'd be heading out, knowing disturbing them wouldn’t be the best idea.
——————————————————————— Sam walked out of the steaming shower, wrapping his lower body in a towel. Taking another to dry off his hair. He ran his long fingers through his hair, noticing it had become very coarse over the past few months. Sam thought back to a hunt when shards of a monster's guts managed to get stuck in his hair. He felt like it was a personal attack; a shower didn’t help as much as he wanted to either. He spent hours trying to get the red and black hard goo out, even asking Dean. Unfortunately, Dean was not very gentle and made Sam partially ball. He remembers how you saved the day with coconut oil and a small brush. You had to sit on a chair while Sam sat crisscrossed in between your legs. You guys were still getting to know each other, so it was an awkward moment, but after Sam felt your gentle nails and euphoric massage, he melted. His head rested on your bare, soft thigh as you worked on the sides of his head. He felt so much at peace that he could’ve slept right then and there. He chuckled as he ran his hand through his hair, wishing he could have some of that magic right now. He wanted the comfort you gave him.
Putting on his comfier clothes, he slid into his bed, falling soundly asleep with a fond yet tired memory passing through his head once more.
——————————————————————— You slide open the door, balancing heavy bags of groceries, a special box containing a slice of heaven for Dean, and the boys’ favourite drinks. You dropped the bags in the kitchen, unpacking them away into the cupboards and fridge. Knowing it would be a long night, you pulled out your phone and put some music on low. You then turned on the gas stove, grabbing the lighter out of the drawer to start the fire. Begin by taking out mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and other foods, washing them before finely chopping them, and cooking them on low heat. You added seasoning and eventually smelled the delicious aroma emanating from the dish. Now you need to cook the meat.
————————————————— Each boiling drop from the shower head felt relaxing and painful as it fell onto Dean's hunched back. The heat soothed his ache, yet, the new bruises were sending another sensation of pain throughout his back. He groaned as he faced the shower head and allowed the pellets to hit his face, giving all his might to scrub away the dried-up blood and sweat embedded in his freckled skin. All he could think about was sleep, hoping to sleep as much as he could yet, knowing another case would cut his rest short. He took the white soap bar and breathed in the rose aroma it released, it reminded him of you. Dean was glad he had a girl like you in his life, no matter what was bothering his thoughts or physically torturing him, he knew he’d have you to patch him up. You were always there for Sam and him. Every time you carefully did his stitches, gave him a needed hug, fixed his tie or walked into your room, the smell would give him a sense of comfort. It reminded him of his younger days spent with his mom. It reminded him of home.
——————————————————————— You put on the blue oven kits cautiously taking out the crispy chicken from the oven. The meal was finished and so were the other dishes you made. You even had time to prepare healthy snacks and some of Sam’s favourite protein drinks. From a young age, you hated the thought of being a housewife and having to complete all the duties at home, but you knew it was the least you could do to cheer them up, adding much-needed order to their already chaotic lives. Plus, it was nothing compared to all they did for you after they took you in. You smiled as you admired the dinner table, for once looking like a normal family’s dinner table and not used as a summoning ground.
You knocked on Sam’s door to get no response, knowing the younger Winchester might’ve fallen asleep you went to go check on the other one. Knocking once again to hear a low “yeah…”. Pushing the door you see a half awake, now clean Dean, lying against the headboard watching TV.
“Hey,” you gently said. “How are you feeling?”. His eyes were still heavy with sleep but pupils dilated from insomnia. You could tell he tried sleeping but to no avail. “Listen,” you sit on the bed and see him smile a bit. “I know you’re tired but I made some food for you and Sam and you should eat. You’d sleep better with a full stomach. And I might have some pieee”. With that Dean jumped into his bunny slippers and strutted towards the kitchen in his pink nightgown. Chuckling at Dean's cuteness, stopping before leaving the room as you saw the big pile of bloodied clothes on the floor.
———————————————————————
“Hey Sam, I’m coming in.” You announced, entering the neat room, smelling a mix of pine trees and cheap cologne. You saw Sam’s large body lying on his stomach, a soft snore coming from his peaceful slumber. Quietly entering the room, you searched for his hamper, unlike the other one, Sam kept his dirty clothes in one, making it easier for you to take the clothes out of his room.
As you passed by Sam, you stood there watching him, taking advantage of the sliver of peace he was given. You put the hamper down slowly to not wake up Sam, getting on your knees, face level with Sam’s. You watched as his lips laid in a pouted style, opening once in a while to exhale, you took notes of the small moles, birthmarks and faint freckles scattered over his face like stars, noticing how perfect his nose was; never have you ever seen a perfect natural triangle. His thick dark brown eyebrows arched over his forehead symmetrically and his lashes fluttered gracefully as butterflies. His hair was your favourite part, ever since you helped take the guts out of his hair you missed the proximity and softness. His soft hair tickled the inside of your thighs and reminded you of a dog’s overgrown mane. It was beautiful to touch.
You then noticed the crevices appearing in his forehead and eye sockets. He starts to stir in his sheets, the peaceful expressions disappearing, turning into a pained one. He began making uncomfortable noises. He was going into a nightmare.
“Sam, hey wake up! Sam come on, wake up. It’s just a dream!” Sam’s head started moving side to side, the veins in his temple and neck protruding. His eyes were tightly shut and beads of sweat formed across his forehead. His hand gripped firmly onto the arm shaking his shoulder, the other gripping the the brown sheets. “SAM WAKE UP!” Shouting wouldn’t help anymore, looking around you see a cup of water on the nightstand.
——————————————————————— Sam jolted up with a gasp, cold water on his face which soaked most of his hair and nightshirt. He grasped onto as much air as possible, eyes wide trying to familiarize his surroundings. A sense of relief overcame him when he saw your concerned (e/c) eyes.
He saw how your eyes travelled over his face searching for an answer, too shocked or scared to say anything. He sighed, “Don’t tell Dean, please.”
“Ok, I won’t.” What was that, you thought to yourself, you’ve never seen this type of behaviour from him. “At least talk to me about it. You’ve been more tired than usual and it’s worrying. If you’re not gonna tell Dean, tell me.”
Sam smiled, his heart swell when he heard your confession. For once someone was listening to his struggles without ratting out to Dean.
“Um Sam…” Sam shares a confused look until you look down at your now red and numb arm. “Sorry!” Sam immediately retracts his arm away, allowing the blood to rush back to the area.
“It’s like you’ve never touched a girl before or something” you joke trying to lighten up the mood. He laughs under his breath. “Come downstairs and eat something.” You demanded as you rubbed your sore arm.
“It’s okay-“
“Sam.”
He grins his teeth as he sees your serious face. Cute, he thought.
You grab onto his large calloused hands and attempt to pull the giant out of bed, barely budging. “Oh my god, you are so friggin heavy. How are you built like a god with all that junk food?”
He jumps to his feet almost falling on top of you, your nose meeting his chest as the scent of fresh soap fills your nose. A blush rises to your skin at the proximity, looking up you see his brown eyes already staring down at you. You felt his thumb glazed over your smaller hands, which you both held onto each other. “So you think I’m built like a god huh?” Sam suggestively asks with a raised eyebrow.
Taking a quick step back, you playfully shove him away. “Haha very funny Indeed Winchester, get your ass downstairs.” Crossing your arms you wait till he exits his room, him and his footsteps disappearing into the hallway.
“(Y/n) THINKS I HAVE A HOT BODY” Sam shouts from the hallway; your eyes widen as instant embarrassment runs through your body. You hoped to god Dean didn’t hear or you’d never see the end of the teasing.
———————————————————————
You return to the kitchen to see two big babies chowing down on the meal you made, acting as if they hadn’t eaten in ages.
“(Y/n), THISH FWOOD ISH AMASHING” You barely make out the words as Dean continues to stuff his mouth with food. “What he said,” Sam says as he adds more food to his plate. You giggle as you sit next to Sam, glad to see them eating a proper meal. “Where did you even learn how to cook like this?” Dean asks. “My mom used to teach me the basics but then I picked it up more when I moved out. Haven’t cooked like this since University actually,” you answer. “So you’re gonna tell me we could’ve been eating like kings but you decided to torture us with takeout.” Dean jokes while dropping his fork on his plate. “I never hated you more.”
You burst out into laughter throwing your head back, “Please, you love me.” You say rolling your eyes. You noticed how Sam became quiet, twirling his food around a fork.
“Not as much as Sammy does,” Dean says with a devious smirk. Sam chokes on his food as you roll your eyes. “Very funny Dean” Sam glares at Dean.
“Sorry Sam but I’m off limits, too committed to (c/c).” You giggle as you jokingly twirl your hair. “He’s such a daring man dramatic sigh”.
“I’m gonna puke my food up if you keep acting like that,” Dean says with a disgusted face while trying to put even more food in his mouth.
You cheekily smile and see as Sam scoffs, taking note of the weird action. Dean gets up to put his plate away, you take this as a cue to start cleaning up the kitchen.
“Goodnight” Dean yells as he walks out the door. You and Sam both say goodnight. Then it hits you, that rascal. He left you and Sam in the kitchen alone. You can already feel the blood rushing to your ears, instead, you try to distract yourself by doing the dishes.
“Do you need help with anything?” His eyebrows knit together as he asks “Let me help clean at least.”
As much as you wanted him to rest, you couldn’t say no to him and his persuasion. Or maybe he had you wrapped around his finger. “Uh yeah, I’ll wash and you dry?” You offer pointing to the load of dishes. “Yeah, that’s great”. You grab the yellow sponge and begin scrubbing the sauces off the pots, leaving Sam to get the towel. Unmindful of you, you forget where the towels are, right in the cabinet in front of you, the towels stacked on the higher shelf. As you were about to move you felt Sam’s figure hover over your smaller frame. You freeze as you feel his body’s heat mingle with your cold body. His large hand rests on your lower back.
To another person, it could be a simple gesture, but to you, deep down you were screaming from the closeness of it all. Somehow Sam had always made you shy in his presence, you didn’t know if it was because of how smart and skilled he was that made you feel inadequate to him or how he made you weak in the knees with his beautiful…well everything. You’ve been close with other men like Dean, yet Sam’s touches and glances manage to get your cheeks red and heart pumping.
You mindlessly scrub a knife, hoping to finish the chore as soon as possible. “Ow ow ow…” you grimace in pain as the knife slices the side of your finger. You see Sam reacts quickly. Grabbing your hand and putting it under the faucet, turning on the cold water. “This looks pretty bad,” he says as he takes your hands in his. One hand holds on to your wrist while the other gently presses the cut, attempting to get as much blood out.
You could not imagine a more embarrassing moment, the one time you’re alone with Sam you embarrass yourself like a child. Yet you couldn’t ignore how Sam’s body was pressed against yours, you could feel the rough outlines in his body. The front of his leg pressed up against your butt.
“Does it hurt?” Sam asks, not looking away from the cut.
“It just stings but not too much” you reply, noticing the decreased blood spillage.
He takes your other hand and guides your fingers into mirroring his previous actions. “Don’t move I’ll be back”. His warmth fades and you stand still, waiting as the cold water cleans up your cut.
You throw your head back, groaning at your clumsiness.
——————————————————————- Hissing in pain, Sam dabs rubbing alcohol into your new cut. You’re now sitting in his room as it was the closest place with a first aid kit.
“There, all done. How does it feel?” Sam finishes wrapping a large bandaid around the wound.
“I am so much better now. Thank you, Sam.”
Sam gives you a soft smile and he cleans the area up, you watch as he picks up the remote and turns on the TV.
“I thought you were tired”
“Come on, it’s only like 10 pm. We’ll be fine.” Sam defends himself as he sits on the other side of the bed. “Come closer.” He pats the empty spot beside him.
You look stunned at what the Winchester is implying until you realize he means to lay against the headboard. You slowly get up, sitting beside Sam but leaving a good space between both your bodies.
“So what do you want to watch?” Sam asks as he starts surfing through movies on his TV.
“I’m okay with whatever.” ——————————————————————— You turn to Sam to talk to him about the climax when you realize he has dosed off. His head leaning back on the headboard, from the side it looked uncomfortable. Not knowing what to do, you decided to wait until the movie finished. ——————————————————————— You yawned as the movie neared its end, all the characters looking over the bleeding horizon as the camera zooms out. From the lack of movement, you assume Sam is still asleep. You take his phone off the nightstand and turn the do not disturb mode on, if other hunters need you, you’ll handle the case for them. He deserves some rest.
You pull out your phone to scroll through your private socials. Seeing a few edits of your (c/c) and quietly giggling to yourself. You take a glance at Sam, still dosed off. He looks better now. Wait, you look between your (c/c) and Sam. Omg, how did you not see it before? You groan internally as you stare at your phone; the long-haired, smart, well-mannered, and tall golden retriever guy. They were honestly so alike. You hoped the boys wouldn’t be able to see the resemblance.
You thought back to the moment at the table when you were gushing over (c/c) and Sam scoffed. Do you think he was jealous? No, no way. You calm yourself down before the redness reaches your face.
You felt a heavy weight shift onto your shoulder, his hair tickling the crevice of your neck. You didn’t want to wake him up by checking but it was very evident that Sam had fallen asleep on your shoulder. You could smell the sandalwood scent coming from his hair, wishing you could get more of the comforting smell.
Sam was tired and you knew it would be a big fuss if you woke him up. So, you stayed there, looking at the TV screen, trying to hold in any excitement or scream within you. The butterflies are swarming their way around your stomach. That is until you felt Sam’s arm wrap around your torso.
You stay still, unlike your body temperature which skyrockets at the sudden touch. You feel yourself being pulled towards him even more, his head snuggling dangerously close to your neck, his lips close to your skin. Sam’s hot breath created a burning sensation, your heat causing them to burn tenfold.
You weren’t gonna move, you couldn’t leave, you were stuck beside Sam for the rest of the night. You exhale trying to calm yourself; he’ll forget all about this tomorrow. This is totally what friends do. You cuddle and panic internally with Dean all the time. You couldn’t be lying more at this point. You shut your eyes, you carefully reach over to turn the nightlight off.
click
The only light was emitting from the faint blue light on the TV. Its light began to shut off as the room welcomed pure darkness.
So you lay there in the dark as you feel Sam’s body snuggled right up to yours, his arms holding you captive as his fingers twitch and graze you ever so often. This would be a dream if you guys were together. You’ve liked Sam ever since you knew him, and you love both him and Dean very much. Doing everything in your power to show how much you care for them. You just wanted Sam to love you and adore you the way you did.
You felt a wave of exhaustion hit you, and your own eyes became heavy with fatigue. Blinking slowly, you succumb to Sam’s comfort and allow your heavy head to lay on his.

Cooking while it's snowing outside with kayce, please and thank you!!🩷
Rachel......you've asked and now ye shall receive (lol).
Tumblr media
You rubbed your eyes, stumbling down the stairs, still heavy headed at waking to find Kayce's side of the bed empty but the most delicious smells coming from the kitchen. By your best judgement, the bird must've already been put in while everything else was being prepped to go in the oven for later.
".....Aw bubba c'mon, don't wake on me now," Kayce mumbled to your son who was strapped to his naked chest. "You already woke your momma while it was still dark."
You rolled your eyes and laughed to yourself, heading into the kitchen to find Kayce reaching for the cinnamon on the top shelf of the pantry.
"Need some help?" you asked him.
"Jeez!" he jumped. "I thought ya'll were asleep?"
"Yeah well, with Jake waking up this early and smelling dinner cooking down here, I couldn't really help myself," you chuckled.
A little dusting of cinnamon fell onto the crown of Jake's head with Kayce gently blowing it away. "Ya'll wanna help or go back to bed?" he asked.
"I'll help," you told him. "Once I'm up, I'm up."
You jumped right in, helping Kayce prep all the sides while the bird cooked away. The dark of night had begun to show the first shreds of sunrise and with it, you could see that it was snowing heavily. The whole house smelled so good, the warmth of the pellet stove in your basement heating the whole house. There was no doubt in your mind that this was going to be the best Thanksgiving you ever had.

Thank you so so much for all your help so far!
A quick update from us:
I’ve lowered the goal amount to focus on our most urgent need: an inverter and battery back up.
Tumblr media
(We technically need two batteries, which is why the GFM is at $2k to cover a lot of the cost and include what has already been donated.)
We have had… honestly too many power outages in the past two years here, and each one has caused serious problems for us with no heat, even to the point of being life threatening. This inverter is rated the best for pellet stoves and the best for no interruption. (and therefor no smoke blowback into the house) This would help us the most right now!
As always, I offer as much art, stickers, prints, anything you can slap an art on in thanks for any donations! I do have a small waitlist at the moment for commissions/requests, but I’m working my way through it as fast as possible! (Any donation art requests will be worked on concurrently, and will have their own list.)

Fluffy February Day 20 || Physical Touch
Tumblr media
pairing: hotch x reader (yes, mr. president universe)
wordcount: 524
contains: discussion of gunshot wounds and death, mentions of sex
Ostensibly, you’re watching a movie. The television is on, the pellet stove is burning, and you and Aaron are tucked under a blanket with a couple glasses of wine. But you’re having trouble staying focused, unsurprisingly.
Aaron hasn’t found a barber since you moved to Vermont, and his hair is getting a little unruly. You don’t mind at all, reaching a hand out to run your fingers through the unfettered growth there. Your fingers brush over something unfamiliar and jagged, and a small gasp escapes from you. It’s almost imperceptible, but he’s too close, and he knows exactly what’s got your heart caught in your throat all of a sudden.
“It’s okay, angel,” Aaron assures you in a whisper, reaching for the hand you’d reflexively pulled back. “It’s just scar tissue,” he confirms your worst fears.
The two of you didn’t talk about the shooting often, if ever. But the scars were still there– literally and figuratively.
“It doesn’t hurt?” you ask.
“Not anymore,” he promises, bringing your hand back to his hair. You run your fingernails over his scalp in the way that you know that he likes, and he leans into your touch. “I’m still here,” he reminds you.
“Where are they? I know I’ve seen you naked since, but… I’ve been doing my best not to look for them” you confess sheepishly.
“For years?” He asks, his eyes flicking over your face, studying the pain there and wondering how he missed it all this time.
“I didn’t want to burst into tears and kill the mood,” you half-joke.
He takes your hand again, bringing your fingertips to his lips and kissing them before he reaches under his shirt and brushes them over his collarbone, where there’s another section of puckered skin. “This one healed like a bitch. You don’t realize how much you move your chest until it’s in two pieces,” he tells you before dragging your hand over to a spot by his breastbone. It’s too close to his heart for your liking, even though he’s long since recovered. “This is the one that made my lung collapse. Good for when I need a reminder of my own mortality,” he chuckles, and you fake a supportive smile. “The last one is down here,” he says, bringing your joined hands to his hip bone. “I didn’t even realize I had that one for a while. The collarbone and my head were bothering me too much to think about anything else,” he tells you.
A tear escapes your eye, and he catches it with his thumb, craning his neck to kiss your forehead. “I’m okay, hon. We made it to the other side, just like I always said we would,” he says, and you can’t help but laugh a little at that.
“Yeah, and it was just as easy as you always said it would be, too,” you tease as you snuggle further into his chest.
“I didn’t say it would be easy,” he countered. “But apparently, it’s gonna take at least 5 bullets to keep me from you,” he jokes, flicking the movie off and wrapping you tighter in his arms.

This conflict is getting to the point of no return. What I mean when I say that is, there are so many individuals around the globe that are in favor of a ceasefire. The main thing a ceasefire stands for is to halt the bombing in order to allow aid in to those who have been severely impacted and face the brink of starvation and disease due to the war and the inability to receive aid.
The unfortunate reality of this situation is this is happening due to heavy racism among the IDF soldiers. The countless videos I see that come from these individuals are meant to mock and dehumanize Palestinians. I've seen video evidence of soldiers bragging about killing children, wanting to kill babies but saying there's "none left to kill". I just needed the ability to vent because I feel like I'm going absolutely crazy.
I've seen quite a few things come out of this war and a lot of the things I've seen will never wash off of my mind. I couldn't fathom being there and having to deal with this first hand. The Palestinian people are much more courageous and vigilant than anyone else in the world could only ever hope to be. The videos of inventions that they've come up with due to certain items being blocked from entering is astounding too. Their ability to adapt and use resources around them and think outside the box is unlike anything I've seen before. Propane and gas are blocked from entering the Gaza strip (I honestly can't fathom why), yet I saw a video from a food organization program and they built new stoves that run off of flame and wood pellets, since the pellets are permitted to enter Gaza.
It's just severely disheartening. So many individuals are aware of what's happening, so many individuals are out protesting, many of whom come from families that have experienced racism or bigotry to some degree before in their lives. A lot of us have heavy empathy for the people of Palestine. Unfortunately, Hamas just seems like a scapegoat for Israel to do as they please. I'm not going to sit here and act as though I understand everything about the IDF or Hamas, however I will say that it's to the point where this destruction is beyond the point of being catastrophic. I don't know how much more damage the IDF must do until they are satisfied. It's unfortunate that the world is seeing in real time how Israel is able to just threaten and push these people from their homes - kill innocent men, women, and children - elderly, doctors, physicians, teachers, UN workers, bomb schools, mosques, etc. It's just so sad.
I also want to say a disclaimer: I am not writing off the experiences of the Israeli civilians that have nothing to do with this conflict either; this is a very difficult subject to touch on for some but a lot of the civilians that were unaware of how Israel came to be have 0 to do with this, all the same as the Palestinian civilians. I truly wish the best for everyone impacted by this war and I hope that Palestine has justice for the New Year. If I could make one wish this New Year it would be for the bombing to stop entirely and for aid to enter Gaza and the West Bank immediately. There is too much injustice.

French Kiss: Tale of the Revolution, Ch. 15: The City of Light
Tumblr media
Prev - The City of Light - Next - All - [ AO3 ]
WC: 2350 - CW: weapons, angst, arguing
10 July 1789
It was nearly dark by the time they arrived in Paris, but the streets were still hot and humid, the sweet, fresh air of the countryside a memory. Janus didn’t wait for either Logan or Patton to climb down from the driver’s perch and slammed open the carriage door the moment the wheels stopped turning. He carried with him the bag from Remus, his wig tucked safely in its box under his arm.
“Janus, wait—” Patton called after him, but he slipped down the stairs to the back entrance of the church basement.
“Let him go,” Logan muttered. “He has every right to be angry with me. What I said was reprehensible.”
Patton rested an impossibly strong hand on his shoulder and smiled sadly. “What you said was… pretty bad.” He gave his shoulder a little squeeze. “But you were speaking out of worry and… hurt.”
“Of course I’m concerned, but…” Logan shook his head. “What would I have to be hurt about? Janus seems perfectly happy with this arrangement, he’s the favorite of the future King. You should have seen the way he smiled when he… he—” His protest withered under Patton’s knowing smile. “He cannot know,” he pleaded, gripping Patton’s arm with both hands..
Patton pulled Logan into a hug and rubbed his back. “Your secret’s safe with me, Logan.” He shrugged and pulled back enough to grin up at him. “Well… I think Remy figured it out, too, but he’s just a busybody sometimes.” He squeezed his arms around Logan one more time, then leapt down from the perch and offered his hand. “Come on down and get Remy to make you something. I’ll take care of Naif and Petit. ”
“It… it would perhaps be best to give Janus a little more time to cool off before I attempt another apology.”
Nodding, Patton smiled up at him. “Now, go on, I’ll meet you inside.” He gave Logan a little nudge as he led the horses to their borrowed stable at the end of the road.
Logan watched him go, then took a deep breath and retreated into the warm glow of Café de Foy.
~~~
Janus didn’t light the lamp in the tiny room he shared with Logan and the city’s fetid heat had made their pathetic little pellet stove unnecessary. He stubbed his toe on the foot on the bed and swore. Perfect way to end the night. How dare Logan judge him without even hearing what he had to say? How dare he assume this was mere lust? He never even considered, never even asked if there was more.
He stripped out of his clothes in the dark, and hung them in their little shared closet. Not that either of them needed much space. Logan had two shirts and two trousers. One waistcoat, which he was already wearing. Janus had acquired a few additional pieces, mostly from Logan, actually. “You do it better justice,” he’d murmur when one of his wealthier parishioners gifted him something out of guilt.
Slamming the door shut, Janus threw himself onto his bed and pulled the threadbare sheet up to his neck. Despite the worst the humid July night could throw his way, his bed felt cold and entirely too large. Had it really taken only two weeks for him to become accustomed to not sleeping alone?
Evidently.
Hours passed. Starlight shifted and the moon set, darkening the room further. The low, steady click of Logan’s prized clock marked the time, droning on and on as though nothing had happened, as though Logan was simply already asleep and quiet in his own bed. But the room was empty, the only sound to accompany the clock was Janus’ own breathing. After what felt like half the night, Logan quietly shuffled down the stone steps, foot falls echoing in the silence of the night. The door was nearly soundless as it opened and Janus lay still, feigning sleep.
Logan would want to talk. Would want to confess, to gain his absolution the way he’d grant it to his parish. Janus was in no mood to grant him anything.
He listened as Logan prepared for bed in the dark. His heart clenched at the quiet sniffles from the other side of the room. Logan was crying. Why the hell was he crying? Logan lingered near the closet and after several minutes, he murmured, almost to the clothes themselves, “I’m so sorry, Janus.” His voice was barely louder than a breath. Had the city been awake, it surely would’ve drowned out his words and Janus would have never heard what he said next.
“If you love him even half as much as I love you, I understand.”
Janus froze in his bed, afraid to breathe, afraid to reveal he was awake and had heard Logan’s confession. Blood roaring in his ears, he didn’t hear what else Logan said before he gently pressed the wardrobe door shut and climbed quietly into his own bed.
11 July 1789
Sleep was elusive but not impossible and the dawn had just begun to soak the horizon when Janus’ eyes finally slipped shut. By the time they reopened, bright mid-morning sun streamed through the little cracks around their closed shutters. Logan was gone. Janus squinted against the light. He’d left the shutters open, letting in the thin starlight and the chance for a bit of a breeze in the sweltering night. Logan must have shut them when he’d left, perhaps hoping to give him a bit more sleep. The city was busy, voices raised and more foot traffic past their window than usual. Everyone was likely trying to get in a bit of work and errands and visiting before the heat of the afternoon took them all.
Janus rose and dressed quickly. He had no way of knowing when exactly Logan had left, and he hoped to catch him in the café before too much of the morning had passed.
The city buzzed with energy, hushed voices speaking fervently at each corner. What had happened while he was gone? He pushed open the heavy oak door to the café and let his eyes adjust to the dim interior. Logan sat with his back to the door, hunched over the table, a bit of graphite in his hand and a short stack of parchment near his elbow. Engrossed in his work, he barely moved when the door clunked shut, but still his head jerked up when Patton called his name.
“Janus!” he cheered. “Let me get you a coffee!”
He nodded and made his way to Logan’s table. Head bowed, Logan watched him from the corner of his eye. “May I join you?”
Logan looked up and nodded, eyes wet. “Please,” he whispered.
They were both quiet as Patton brought a pot of coffee, letting his chattering about the heat, the new—gently stolen—water pump he and Remy had installed to support the growing afternoon crowds from the Sorbonne. “Those University students do tip well,” he said with a little shrug as he refilled Logan’s cup. “They want to pretend they’re working class but their purses are heavy,” he laughed. Finally, he smiled at each of them and excused himself before returning to the kitchen.
Logan searched for his words in the swirls of steam coming off his mug. Janus waited and slowly sipped at his cup, the smoky taste almost painting a smile across his face. He’d missed Patton’s coffee. The world’s everything at their fingertips in the palace kitchens and they couldn’t compete against the love that little server infused in his brew.
“I am sorry,” Logan finally said, ripping back Janus’ attention. “I was wrong to make assumptions and to…” He shook his head. “I said horrible things and I am sorry, Janus. I hope you can forgive me.”
“Lo,” Janus reached across the table and Logan flinched when he hesitated before taking his hand. “It’s not what you said that hurt,” he frowned, fingers tapping against the side of Logan’s fingers. His knuckles were more pronounced, as were the bones in his wrist. His fingertips were cold, even in the heat of the day. “It hurt,” Janus admitted. “But what was worse was that you didn’t trust me, that you believed that I would betray everything for… for pleasure. ”
Logan hung his head. “I don’t really believe that,” he whispered. “I… I was… was afraid. Afraid for your safety. It’s an incredible risk and…” He set down his cup and gripped Janus’ hand between both of his. “How do you know he won’t have you arrested? Have you…”
“He won’t.” Janus said. “He’s known who I was since the night we met.”
“What?” Logan hissed, leaning forward. “How could you—”
“I didn’t tell him. He had a courtier ask about ‘Sir Henri Juriste.’ Apparently my cover wasn’t as strong as we’d believed. The real Juriste is now at least thirty years my senior.” Janus rolled his eyes and finished his coffee. “But Remus waited for me to feel safe enough with him to admit the truth.”
“He’s a fool,” Logan muttered.
Janus yanked his hand back and glared at his friend. “Excuse me?”
“I do not—” he sighed and folded his hands in his lap. “I mean he brought a known imposter into his palace. Into his bed.”
“That’s enough,” Janus’ voice was quiet but sharp.
“You could have caused him real harm,” Logan explained, softer. “How do you not see that?”
“I would never hurt him.”
“And if the cause demanded it?” Logan straightened in his seat, glaring back just as hard. “Have you forgotten what you’d gone to Versailles to do?”
“And I’m doing it. Prince Remus listens to my advice—”
Logan scoffed. “Perhaps in his private chambers.”
“It is not like that.” Janus insisted. “I am doing what you would advocate for. I’ve even gotten him to read bits of your treatise—”
“You what?”
“None with your real name,” Janus crossed his arms over his chest. “It seems the Prince isn’t the only one you take for a fool.” He lowered his arms and leaned closer. “Like it or not, Prince Remus is the eldest son. He will take the throne when the King dies and King Remus will be amenable to our cause and will have the power and the heart to enact real change.”
“What has happened to you?” Logan sat back, eyes narrowed as he stared at his oldest friend like he’d never seen him before. “You were the best of us, you used your talents for the cause.” He slapped his hand on the table, punctuating each sentence. “You never forgot where you came from, never forgot what we were fighting for! And now?” Logan looked at him like something he’d scraped off his boots. “Now you're betraying our brotherhood, betraying our ideals, all in the name of some false love. You’ve known him for weeks , you didn’t tell him your real name until just now. That’s not love.”
“And I suppose you are the great expert on love?” Logan’s face fell and Janus wished he could rip his words back. “Lo, I—”
He only sat up straighter and finished his coffee. Patton was at his side before the empty cup had touched the scratched table top. Logan waited silently while Patton poured, then shook his head at Janus. “You are blinded by the needs of your heart. And your flesh.”
Janus' hands shook and he stroked his ring. “Are you quite certain it is I who is blinded, Father Gérault?”
Logan paled and looked away. Before he could respond, the café door slammed open and a half-dozen of the Garde Royale stomped inside. Conversation in the café dissolved, the faint bubble of the oat gruel Patton was preparing roared in the quiet.
“Good morning, gentlemen,” Remy called out from the back room, clearly drawn by the sudden lack of ambient noise. “May I get you some coffee?” He raised a steel tankard. “On the house.” When they ignored him, he stepped closer, his full height suddenly obvious. “Or perhaps something stronger? A light ale on a summer’s day?”
Janus’s eyes widened when the palace steward stepped inside, peering through the relative darkness at each patron. His eyes landed on Janus and he pointed at their table.
Remy stepped forward, just barely in their path. “Surely it doesn’t take six guards to have a conversation with one of my patrons.” Janus looked around them. The guards had chosen their position well, blocking both the main entrance and the side door. There was a hatch hidden behind the counter, but there was no way Janus could reach it without being seen.
The steward ignored Remy and approached the table where Logan and Janus sat. “By order of the Dauphin, you are to come with me , Sir Juriste.”
“You have the wrong person,” Logan said in his ‘reasonable’ voice. He rose, shoving his papers to the side then held out his hands in benediction. “This is my friend, he is not a noble.”
“Well, perhaps your friend has been less than honest with you,” the steward remarked and pointed at the gold bracelet hanging from Janus’ wrist. “He wears the Dauphin’s fleur-de-lis. Besides…” The steward managed to sneer and simper at the same time. “I know his face.”
“It’s alright, Lo,” Janus said as he stood. “At least you get to say you were right after all.” His joke fell flat when he met Logan’s eyes. "Be safe," he murmured and gave shoulder a squeeze as he drew close and whispered in his ear. "I'm sorry, too."
The guards had fanned out, standing between Janus and the other patrons. And Patton and Remy. “Very well,” he said to the steward, chin held high. “More guards outside, I presume?”
The steward nodded and moved with staccato steps to the door. One of the guards held it open, and two led the way. The remaining three watched the patrons—and Remy—muskets at the ready. Just before he was swallowed by the glare of the midday sun, Janus nodded to Logan and Patton. And then he was gone.
The guards followed and the café door slammed shut again. Voices erupted in the café and Patton leapt out from behind the counter. “We have to do something!” Logan nodded, about to speak. He was interrupted by a loud voice carrying over the din.
“Oh, now you want to take action?” Colére spat from the corner, feet propped on the table. “Where was this fight when the people were ready to take up arms to defend our right to assemble?" He rose to his feet. "Where was this fight when the people were ready to defend our right to be heard in the Assembly?”
“You wanted to storm the palace with a handful of boys who could scarcely lift a musket.” Logan’s voice was low but the former priest knew how to keep an audience. “That’s not being heard, Lucas, that’s being massacred. They’ve likely taken Janus to the prison at the Bastille.” He gripped Colére’s shoulder. “There are more guns than prisoners there. We will not win this by might alone.” Colére’s eye twitched, but he listened and took his seat.
“We need information,” Logan said, and turned to address the small group that had assembled around him. “And we need a plan.”
Hello, this question might be out of your expertise but... Do you know of anything that is a field / house mouse repellant?
My apt building has developed a problem and I hate to 💀🐀
hi !! ironically enough, i'm in the process of moving, and have discovered the place i'm renting has a similar problem, which of course wasn't disclosed to me earlier... i've never dealt with mice before so it was a surprise to me/i'm just beginning to get the ropes of it, but it's a common problem in the town i'm moving to, and this is what i've picked up from my neighbors/other people i know there so far:
for natural repellants, peppermint oil, cloves, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper can be used (you can buy concentrated oils and soak cotton balls with them, or buy sprays/scented pellets, depending on which works best for you). the idea is--essentially--that they're particularly strong scents that work as a deterrent (and peppermint oil/cloves have the additional benefit of making your home smell nice)
i've heard of people using mothballs and ammonia but for me those smells are a little hard to take, especially indoors. i'd recommend using them on patios/porches, if you use them at all. some brands of mothballs also have the additional (fun) property of being associated with high blood pressure and heart trouble over extended periods, so if you do opt to use these, i'd do some careful and in-depth research before you decide which kind to use in close quarters!
i'd also highly recommend getting yourself some medium grade steel wool and putting that in any holes you may discover in walls/floorboards (particularly behind large items in your home which aren't often moved--i'd check behind washing machines/dryers, the stove...). it has the benefit of allowing for ventilation while also keeping mice out!
and sealing food in tupperware/pantry containers. i've--unfortunately--spent a fortune on food containers since planning to move in, but the benefit of being able to reuse them/feeling secure in the knowledge that my food is stored hygienically gives me a peace of mind that's worth the added expenditure that i hadn't anticipated.
Buy Charcoal Online: In-depth Guide to Biofuel Wood Pellets
The choice of fuel is the prime consideration before you buy charcoal barbeque or a garden grill. It is vital to weigh your options carefully When choosing between a charcoal BBQ and a biofuel-based oven. With several factors to consider, taking the time to make the right decision can ensure that you get the most out of your investment.
In this edition of the Evolution fuel guide, I am dropping an overview of biofuel wood pellets.
Are Wood Pellets Sustainable
Emission is one of the crucial concerns when choosing fuel for domestic stoves. About 98% of this biofuel is consumed while grilling food. Pellets produce bluish smoke for flavouring food during grilling. These products are eco-friendly compared to traditional fossil fuels and charcoal, without liberating harmful carcinogens and particulates into the environment.
Food Safety Standards
BBQ wood pellets are made of processed food-grade hardwood sawdust. The raw materials are sanitised and passed through rigorous quality control checks to comply with culinary safety standards. Here are specific factors to look for on the packaging and product guide when buying pellets for cooking:
Food-grade wood pellets are made of 100% natural ingredients
Avoid products with synthetic binders, additives, and colours
Choose odour-free products to get the wood-fired aroma
Tumblr media
Benefits of Using Wood Pellets for Pizza and BBQ Grills
1. Natural Flavour Profiles One of the advantages of cooking with wood pellets is the unique flavour profiles. This depends on the type of wood in the pellets. If you are working with varying pellets, it is possible to achieve incredible aftertastes every time. From meaty aromatic sensation to savoury to smooth texture, pellets create rich and diverse culinary experiences.
2. Heat and Energy Efficiency
Wood pellets are a money saver cooking fuel, offering matchless efficiency. The dense texture regulates slow cooking while maintaining a high temperature and uniform heat distribution. It provides enough time at high temperatures for searing the meat. When the melted amino acids and marination spices drip on the wood, it produces thick aromatic smoke. And if you are cooking pizza in the oven, it offers sufficient time for the cheese to melt and the crust to get a soft texture.
3. Fun, Easy, and Manageable
Igniting BBQ charcoal requires a lighter fluid and time to start. Allow a long wait time to warm the oven before exposing food to the firewood.
Moisture-free pellets catch fire soon without using any burning fluid. It also eliminates the risk of catching an ignition liquid smell.
Once it is set to fire, you can get along with other activities or spend time with friends and family. 98% of the pellet components are consumed during the cooking, releasing little to no soot. The ashes will automatically collect at the base tray, easing the post-cooking chores.
Storage Instructions and Compatibility
Biofuel wood pellets are sold in specially designed plastic bags to prevent moisture contact and contamination. Seal the bag after use to avoid atmospheric impact. The pellets soak moisture from the humid air and become soggy very soon. Store these products in a dry and cool place for overall safety.BBQ or pizza pellets work great in wood-fired ovens, multi-fuel stoves, firewood pizza ovens, pellet stoves, and biomass boilers.
Avoid Using Infused Pellets
There is a lot of buzz among buyers often coaxed with alluring products. Some brands sell wood pellets infused with wine, oils, and aromatic spices. These items do not contribute to the cooking but may damage your grilling equipment. For instance, burning wine-infused pellets can lead to the formation of sticky ashes at the bottom tray. These things are tough to deal with, causing problems and loss of money.
Get Ready for the Ultimate Savory BBQ Treat
Hardwood biofuel pellets are the perfect option if you are looking for the best fuel for a manual barbeque or pizza oven. Pellets induce slow cooking at high temperatures to achieve the desired flavour profile. The dense composition of the pellets offers high-end burning efficiency, making them one of the most economical grilling fuels for wood-fired ovens.
To buy charcoal or wood pellets for your oven is always a personal choice. It is worth experimenting with a few alternatives to find the best suit. Happy Grilling!
Unlocking Ultimate Pest Control: The Best Rat Killer Poison Solutions
Tumblr media
Rats are unwelcome visitors to your home. These rodents not only can carry diseases and create health risks, they’re also incredibly destructive — chewing through walls, insulation, and electrical wiring.
Rats usually start outside — under or above a home. They like to dig under or around the foundation or enter the attic through vents before ultimately making their way into your living spaces. Once inside, rats will take refuge under furniture, behind walls, or in dark, seldom-used corners of the house. They’re also famous for making nests inside and under appliances.
Rats are omnivores, so they’ll eat anything available to them. Although rats are best known for scavenging through trash and eating food that’s left out, some rats will kill small animals like birds and lizards for food. Rats can survive for a month or more without directly drinking water. This is because they consume enough water in the foods they eat. When they need to drink water, rats can usually find enough in drains, pet dishes, or condensation in the pipes or walls.
Inspecting for rats is the first step in DIY rat control. Because rats tend to live in hidden areas, like wall voids, attics, and crawl spaces, careful inspection is the only way to identify their harborage areas, runways, and feeding zones. By tracing the signs of rats, you can also find and seal the entry points they’re using to get into your home.
We look for the following signs to trace rats in your home or commercial property
•Piles of droppings (which look like black or brown cylindrical pellets that are ½–1” in length with at least one blunt end) in hidden areas, such as behind the stove, in your basement or attic, or the corners of the home. •Tracks or tail drag marks in dusty areas or places with moist soil. If you’re unsure which areas rats frequent, sprinkle a fine layer of baking soda on the floor and check for fresh tracks in the morning. •Ductwork, door joists, flooring, and studs that have been gnawed on or damaged or food packages, containers, or leftovers with bite marks. Because of their large incisors, rats gnaw holes that are 2” or more in diameter with rough, ragged edges. •Dirt burrows constructed near walls, sidewalks, or curbs, or along the foundation of your home. They may also appear under trees, bushes, or other landscaping plants. •The presence of runways, either outdoors or indoors. Outdoors, runways look like smooth, packed-down areas of dirt or soil. Indoors, a runway may be an area that’s free of dirt or dust. Norway rats usually leave runways. •Smudges along the walls near active runways, which look like a mixture of dirt and grease. •Dark urine stains. •Strange sounds in the walls, including squeaking, gnawing, scratching, digging, scurrying, rustling, and running noises. •Strong ammonia odors, which are usually associated with extensive rodent infestations. •Roof rat nests made of insulation, shredded paper, fabric, or other soft material. •Sightings of living or dead rodents — while roof rats are sleek and graceful in appearance, with gray to black fur and large eyes, Norway rats are large and robust, with brown to black fur and small eyes.
Long-term rat infestation protection and prevention by the best pest control management company in Mumbai
Eliminating a rat or mouse infestation relieves the immediate problem. But significant numbers of rats and mice are consistently present outdoors near homes — whether in urban, suburban, or rural environments. Ultima Search professionals know how to set up ongoing protection to prevent rat or mouse re-infestation.
Summary: Man’s best friend makes one hell of a team
Notes: Title taken from one of my favorite movies, plus I can’t pass up the thought of Bob and the rest of the team with a bunch of Siberian husky puppies!!! I may actually turn this into an AU but I’m not sure where that’s gonna go, so stay tuned my friends!!!
Pairings: Mentioned OCs, reader mentioned
Cheyenne Falls, OK
December 1st, 2022
“Ok so you guys have to be quick getting in and out because they’ll run,” Bob told the rest of the group.
A messy but collective “you got it” rang out throughout the group as Bob unlocked the door to Joe’s workshed. The lights were still on with Joe inside as he prepped the coffee for the morning, the scratching of little nails on wood behind a gate and a series of high pitched barks and whines flying through the air.
“Uh oh they heard you comin,” Joe chuckled.
Rooster, Coyote, Payback, Phoenix and Fanboy could hardly believe what they were seeing. Twelve little husky puppies, each one different from the last, poked their little heads up from the pen where they slept with their mother and father, close enough to the pellet stove to keep warm. Their jaws all fell open at the sight, completely roped in by their adorable little faces.
“Oh......my......God!!!” Phoenix exclaimed. “Oh my God, I want one!”
“You want one?” Bob chuckled, picking the runt of the litter up into his arms and cradling him against his chest. “They all need homes.”
“Ugh, Cole’s gonna kill me but I’ll talk him into it,” Phoenix said.
“Bro like this one looks like he wants me,” Coyote remarked, pointing to a little black, white and grey one that was preoccupied with a ball.
Bob rolled his eyes. Now he was really starting to question bringing everybody here.
“Uh oh, here’s my mini me,” Hangman said, lifting a black and white one into the air.
“They all got names?” Payback asked him.
“Uh, let’s see......” Bob mused, trying to recall all of their names. “We’ve got four females and those are Maggie, Freya, Angel and Mouse. The seven other males in with them are Shorty, Mack, Koda, Togo, Socks, Diego and Shasta. This little guy here though......is Teeter.”
“He’s kinda runty isn’t he?” Rooster remarked. “Why’d you guys name him Teeter?”
“Well,” Joe said before Bob had a chance to answer. “Irene kinda got the idea from when we were all watching ‘Yellowstone’ the other night with Bob and (y/n).”
“Plus he kinda teeters when he walks,” Bob chuckled.
Bob set Teeter down on the floor, the little male puppy quite literally, teetering from one set of paws to the other as he walked. Nobody could resist the thought of playing with him, trying to get him to walk from one end of the group to the other as they circled around him.
It wasn’t long before all the pups were scrambling to get out of the pen, some of them crawling across their laps and chewing on everyone’s bootlaces. Teeter chewed on the sleeves of Bob’s navy blue hoodie as the blizzard raged outside.
“They’re gonna make one hell of a team someday,” Joe remarked.
“You think?” Bob asked him.
“I know it when I see it,” Joe told him. “Teeter will probably be leading them on too. You watch.”
Bob didn’t doubt it in the least. It was always the ones you least expected that made the best team leaders.
The Government And Green Energy: What They Are Doing To Promote ItNo matter if you are a tree hugger or just looking to save a bit of money, converting to green energy in your home will make a huge difference. Keep reading for useful advice, and tips on how to incorporate green energy into the technology that your house and family uses today.
You can save a phenomenal amount of energy just by using less electricity every day. Unplug appliances that are not being used. Also, remember to turn off lights when they are not needed. This is easy to do and saves a lot of energy.
Do your best to keep your windows shaded from any sunlight. Shading the windows with curtains and blinds will keep out the sun in summer and keep the heat from escaping in winter. Doing these things will let you use less air conditioning in the summer. This means that you will save energy as well as money.
When not using things, turn them off. When you exit a room, be sure that everything has been fully turned off. When you can, plug your electronics into a power strip and when you are not using it, turn it off. Energy is still being used when something is in standby mode.
Go green on your coffee break by bringing your own cup. If you usually order a Tall Latte at Starbucks, bring a tall re-usable coffee mug with you. Every time you ask your favorite coffee shop to mix your drink in your own cup, you are helping to green your environment.
Heat your home with a pellet stove. Pellets are basically made of compressed sawdust: they burn without any emanation and are much easier to store and transport than a pile of wood. Before investing in a pellet stove, you should find a place where you can get affordable pellets first.
A very easy and cheap way to save on your high energy bills is to try installing some low flow shower heads and faucets. Switching from the standard, 2.5 gallon/minute shower heads, to the low flow 1.5 gallon/minute ones, can help you save a lot with your hot water energy costs.
Switch to low flow or dual flush toilets. These particular toilets only use 1.28 gallons for liquid flushes. الليالي الوترية في رمضان use 20-40% less water by using them instead of average toilets. On ياميش رمضان , a family can save up to 2,000 gallons of water per year! This can provide significant savings to your water bill, every single month.
Change how you use your electronics to make them more energy efficient and kind to the environment. Batteries on electronics are designed to be used. To keep your battery healthy you have to exercise it by using your electronic not plugged in. It is better for the device and keeping it plugged in after it is fully charged only wastes electricity.
Try heating water using solar power to further implement solar power into your needs. For many people, solar power is still a thing of the future, but it doesn't have to be. There are الليالي الوترية في رمضان to include it in today's world, and using a solar power for all your water heating needs is one of them. Think about how much your current water heater is used, and think about how much money you could save.
A simple and easy way to reduce your energy consumption and make your house greener is to thoroughly clean the lint filter in your dryer each time before you use it. Believe it or not, by doing this easy and simple act, you can slash your dryer's usage of electricity by as much as 30%!
If you are trying to save on your electricity bill, try to use your ceiling fan more in the summer. A ceiling fan can help to make any room feel about 10 degrees cooler, and it costs much less to run than an air conditioner does. You will be saving money and also using less electricity, meaning you're doing something great for the environment.
Whatever your reasons for wanting to go green, stick with them! Saving money is in everyone's interest, as is working for a cleaner environment. Hopefully, you have learned enough from this article to begin putting green energy to work in your home, to see significant savings and feel better about the impact you have on the environment very soon.
1838, March 9, Northern Wyoming, US
“Lo?” Remus grunted as he pushed up and craned his neck to look around the sun-filled room. Every joint creaked, shoulders tight like he’d slept wrong after a long day’s ride. Sitting up, he swung his legs over the side of the bed and fished around for his slippers. The wood pellet stove had gone out in the night and the old floorboards were fucking freezing.
The house was quiet… well, upstairs was quiet. He could just make out the lilting sound of Virgil’s voice out in the yard. It sounded like he was feeding the chickens. He squinted against the bright light spilling past the open shutters. Damn, how late did he sleep?
“Lo?” Remus pushed away the heavy blankets and shivered. A metallic clink against the wooden floor accompanied him when he finally mustered the will to stand. He looked down. Lo’s wedding ring was on the floor. “Oh, dear husband? Are you missing something?” he laughed, scooping up the ring and grabbing the robe hanging on the back of the door. He kissed Lo’s ring and frowned. It was chilled from the cold room. He tapped it against his lips for a moment, then dropped it into his pocket and headed downstairs.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk…” He chuckled as he swung around the stairwell, following the sounds of breakfast in the big kitchen. “You dropped your ring, L—” His feet stuck to the floor when Patton turned to greet him.
“No, I didn’t, Re,” Patton grinned and waved his hand back at him. A band of multi-colored agate caught the sunshine streaming in from the big bay windows. “Maybe it’s Jannie’s? He left early to take the wool into town, but he’ll be back before dark.”
Remus stared at the ring nestled in his palm, the polished metal now warmed against his skin. Right, of course it was Jay’s ring. Ro’s ring was silver, and Patton’s was stone from the river on the other side of the fields. And Remus’?
Remus’ had just been for the hell of it. Practice for when he’d helped Ro make his husbands’ rings. Right. What a weird thing to forget. He pocketed the ring, then shook his head and gave Patton his very best brother-in-law smile. “Is that coffee I smell? I sure could use it today.”
~
After a little more fussing from Pattycake than he really needed—but fuck all if it didn’t feel good to get a little spoiled from time to time—he and Virgil helped clean up after the feast he’d prepared. Patton had started cooking early, with sourdough and eggs and fresh jerky for Jay to take on the road. Remus had sent him off enough times to practically see the way he’d demure the offering at first, then pretend not to notice when Patton snuck a bundle of goodies into one of the horse’s packs.
Then, after Jay left, it looked like Pattycake had just kept on cooking. Chili was already simmering at the back of the stove, the mouth-watering aroma of cayenne, cumin, and kidney beans melding and filling the air. A sack of cornmeal sat on the counter, promising a fresh pan of cornbread for tonight.
They’d be eating good today.
Cleanup done, Virgil joined Ro to check on the foals and Patton had gone to tackle that loose step out on the porch, so Remus snuck a second cup of coffee before heading out to the workshop. It wasn’t until he’d gotten to the door that he noticed he’d filled two cups, his own usual with cream and sugar, the other black. The fuck?
It took a bit of wrangling, but he got the door open and went inside. He set the mugs down on the corner of the table and stared at them for a minute, then threw back the black coffee. It wasn’t bad and it smelled… it smelled kinda nice. Warm and… homey. Maybe part of his brain just knew if he was gonna make any sense of this busted generator, he’d need all the help he could get.
He was elbows-deep in the guts of the machine, twisted over the back of it to try to keep one hand on the rotor, the other tightening the crank when Virgil’s little voice called from the doorway. “Uncka Re?”
“Fuck,” he swore, spanner clanking to the floor. “Hey, you didn’t hear that,” Remus called back over his shoulder.
“Of course he didn’t,” Ro laughed behind him. “Just like the time you touched the wrong end of the poker.” Remus turned and Ro was standing right behind the kid. Virgil had both hands over his mouth, stifling his laughter. Ro didn’t bother. “Here,” he said, setting down a covered plate. “Pat was worried when you didn’t come out for dinner.”
“What?” He dragged his grease-covered hands down the front of his apron and looked out the window. Yeah, the sun was already casting long shadows out in the orchard. “Fuck, Lo, how long have we—”
“Woe’s not here,” Virgil whispered, shaking his head as he looked up at him with big, teary eyes.
Remus stared at him. “Whaddya say?”
He crouched down and held Virgil’s hand, but before the little boy could answer, Ro nudged the plate toward him. “You’ve been in here too long, little brother. Have some dinner or Pat’s bound to come out here and feed you himself,” he warned, hefting up Virgil to sit on his hip. “And you could use a nap, huh? No woes to be had here, Virge.” He waited until Remus had sat on the floor and pulled the plate onto his lap. “Come out for supper, okay? It’ll be too dark to work out here by then anyway.”
“Not if I get the generator working,” he mumbled, still chewing. Patton had managed to turn the extra cornmeal and gravy and some of the leftover sausage into a flavorful hash. Remus’ stomach grumbled happily. He was hungry. “Hey, tell Pattycake thanks,” He nodded, stabbing another forkful. “This is really good.”
“I will,” Ro smiled. Virgil was already getting those cute little sleepy eyes, lids popping open when he realized they’d closed. “Imma put him down for a nap then run the horses before Jay gets back.”
~
Janus returned home just before dark, and both Ro and Pattycake revealed their relief in the way they showered him in attention. Even Virgil was calmer than usual, listening when Janus regaled them with tales of Shoshone City, of the tribes that thrived there despite the young US government’s attempts to obliterate them.
Tucked away in the mountains, the nation had managed to evade the troops that had led the way for eastern ‘settlers’ tromping through. It wasn’t easy to find their land, and not many survived attempts. It had taken the family a long time to earn the nation’s trust.
The mountain rams that thrived in the Shoshone nation’s rocky bluffs had a different coat that the ones they raised at the ranch, not to mention the traveling merchants wouldn’t sell the nation arms even if they’d sought them out. But when Janus turned up with his Anglo-Saxon features and a winning smile, he was more than able to scoop up as many guns and boxes of ammunition as he wished to purchase.
And Janus was more than willing to exaggerate the size of their little family and buy whatever the merchants would part with to help ensure the Shosone were better armed than any scouting US troops might be ready for. Their relationship with the tribe made for fair trading. And good allies.
When supper was finished, Remus cleaned up, shooing the others off to enjoy some quiet time—well, as quiet as getting Virgil settled for bed could be—before he moseyed off to his own room.
He’d forgotten to close the shutters and the darkened room was chilled when he got upstairs. A bit of starlight peeked through the clouds, so even after he lit the pellet stove he kept the shutters open, just a crack to let in the silvery light. He stripped down to a pair of long johns, and something hard plinked to the floor and rolled under the bed.
Crawling on his belly, he reached and fumbled in the dark until his fingers grazed smooth, warm metal.
The ring.
How could he have forgotten it? He snatched it up and shimmied out from under the bed frame and sat on the floor, staring down at the little circle in his palm. The ring was as big of a mystery to him now as it had been when he’d first seen it that morning.
But that was the thing. Remus knew this ring. It was familiar, the size, the weight, the glint of it in the half-dark room. He just couldn’t figure out what the fuck he was doing with it.
Without really being able to explain why, he put the ring back in his pocket and carefully folded his trousers, then set them on the chair next to his bed. Then he peeled back the covers and huddled under the cold blankets and slept.
