How one work inspired another: Hades and Persephone.

I don’t know the origins of Lore Olympus because experience has taught me that the more I learn the backstories of my fandoms the more the magic is sucked out of them.  So I intentionally have no idea whether Lore Olympus’ creator Rachel Smythe ever heard or saw Hadestown.  But the musical was first performed in 2016 and Lore Olympus debuted in March, 2018.

If Hadestown inspired Smythe to read the myths and create her wonderful story isn’t really important to me.  What I love is how one story, one myth from millennia ago, continues to inspire creative work.  Someone, somewhere, thousands of years ago, first came up with the myth about why we have the seasons, and entertained friends, family, community with it. Eventually it was recorded, it was illustrated, it was acted on stage and in royal courts.  What a wonderful thing!  To bring from your imagination something that lives and grows thousands of years after you’re gone!  The myth may well have been embellished, expanded, added to, edited, shifted, over the centuries.

That’s happening even today.  My father was a professor who taught Comparative Religion and Mythology, so I grew up with Greek legends.  For most of my life few people talked about Persephone and Hades because it was only seen as pro-abduction and rape; some school libraries banned books about the Greek and Roman myths because they were chock full of rape, murder, even cannibalism.  When I was young reimagining and reinventing stories wasn’t done, except in the shadows by those of us who wrote fanfic and drew fanart.  It wasn’t until the Internet that people really began sharing their personal headcanons.  Children’s authors rediscovered the ancient tales and gave them a modern spin or incorporated portions of them into their work -- JK Rowling and Rick Riordan, for example -- and sent kids in search of books with the legends.

Now we’re free to share our reinventions worldwide, and I’m so happy about it.  I love seeing each new invention.  Hadestown is one.  I love Anaïs Mitchell‘s unapologetic romance between Persephone and Hades.
