Berena Advent 2023
Day 8 - Lingerie
The silky ribbon comes loose with barely a tug and falls to the floor, the lid follows soon after. Nestled in the bed of tissue is some of the most beautiful lingerie Serena has ever seen.
Gossamer thin lace the color of rosé is held together by satin so luminous it can only be silk, woven through with filaments of golden thread that make it practically shimmer in the fairy lights from the tree. Carefully she pulls the garment free, taking in how sheer it is, how small.
Very small.
Keeping the disappointment from her face, she smiles at Bernie. The very last thing Serena wants is to make her think she's done anything wrong.
"Darling, it's gorgeous! Thank you." She leans in to press a quick peck to Bernie's lovely mouth. "I'm a little worried about the fit though. Did you keep the receipt?"
Bernie's pleased smile turns wicked, one of her hands sliding up to the nape of Serena's neck, stopping her from moving too far. This time she initiates the kiss - longer, deeper, and filled with promise.
"I said it was your gift," she says in that low voice that makes Serena squirm, punctuating the words with another soft kiss. "I didn't say that you'd be wearing it."

Decorating the tree
Just my little drabble for the @berenaadvent day 4 prompt “duck”
Read on A03
Bernie had never really been one for decorating for Christmas. She’s spent more of her adult Christmases deployed somewhere or another and it was always Marcus and the children who decorated. Even on the few occasions she was at home working at the local army camp they decorated without her. Never wanted to wait for the weekend for her to be free always wanting to put the Christmas decorations up on the first day of December. Bernie didn’t begrudge them it, it’s what they did when she was deployed so why should they change it just because she wasn’t.
Serena is different however, Serena always wants them to decorate together and Bernie loves it. They are about to spend their third Christmas together and true to form Serena has waited until they have a shared day off to set about tackling the decorations.
Bernie had been into the loft the night previous, thankful for only being on a short shift rather than one of the usual long days. And now they are stood in the living room surround by all the Christmas decorations Serena has collected over the years. It’s maybe the only thing that makes Bernie feel a little sad, that she doesn’t have any, Marcus kept all what they had collected as a family after the divorce.
“Do you want to tackle the lights and I’ll set about sorting the tinsel ready for the tree? We can then add the baubles and decorations together. Then once that’s done we can sort out everything else?”
“Sounds perfect.” Bernie says before leaning into give Serena a kiss, for no other reason than because she can.
Half an hour later and Bernie is just finishing changing the last of the dead bulbs in the lights. It’d taken her 15 minutes to untangle them all, she doesn’t understand that, because they always wrap them up so carefully when they take them down. Her back is complaining so she’d taken to standing to complete the job rather than crouching on the floor.
“Duck please dear,” she hears Serena’s voice come from above her. Bernie glancing up to see Serena stood on the step ladder set just to her side, hands splayed out to sort out the tree branches to look exactly how she wants them. Bernie knows better than the argue and ducks obediently, feels a few loose pin needles drop onto her head as Serena fiddles with the branches.
“Thank you.” Serena says, her cue that she can once again stand tall. They work together from there to wrap the lights around the tree in just the perfect way. It’s Bernie who climbs the ladder to wrap the lights around the top of the tree. Looks down to see Serena has already started on the tinsel at the bottom, to make the whole job a little quicker.
“It’s your turn to duck, sweetheart, unless you want to join these lights on the tree.” She watches as Serena raises an eyebrow at her but complies anyway. Allowing Bernie to wrap the last of the lights around the tree.
“Okay you can try turning them on now,” it’s easy from Serena’s already stooped state and as the lights flash to life Bernie does think they look magical.
The rest of the day finds them adding baubles and decorations to the tree before setting out to decorate the rest of the house. Wreathes on the doors, lights in the windows, tinsel around photos frames and general Christmas ornaments laid here and there.
As has been tradition for the past three years the final decoration to be hung is the sprig of mistletoe that always gets placed in the doorway between the hallway and the living room. Once it’s firmly in place both women duck under it and share a long lingering kiss. Knowing they have an excuse to do just that every day for the next few weeks, not that they really need one of course.

1st of December: Berena Advent 2023.
"On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to meeeee...,"
The greying brunette shuffled over onto her left side, sleepy eyed and confused.
"What on earth is the time, Berenice?" She croaked, mouth dry from indulging in one too many Shirazs the previous evening.
"Serena Campbell it is eight o'clock. Serves you right if you're a little rough. I warned you not to open a third bottle last night, but oh no the woman who insists she can handle her wine couldn't resist more of that fine vintage," smirked a cheery faced Bernie.
"Humf! I am fine, just not used to being sung to first thing in the morning." Serena looked up at her partner's puppy eyes and messy blonde hair trying not to smile herself.
"You do know that the twelve days of Christmas are actually from the twenty-fifth through to when the three wise men arrive to see Christ on Epiphany," she stated in a dry voice.
"Ah, yes, but I didn't know what else to sing before presenting you with a gift."
"Oh..., what are you upto Bernie?" Serena asked with a twinkle and a raised eyebrow.
"Kiss first?"
The blonde leaned down pressing her lips fully onto her partner's, slowly with the tip of her tongue around the slightly open dry lips of Serena's.
Bernie pulled away, grinning at her love through her fringe. She received a quizzical stare, as Serena licked her own lips.
"Chocolate and honeycomb?"
"Clever Campbell!" laughed the blonde.
"What have you been eating at this time in the morning?"
"Shut your eyes."
"Bernie...,"
"Go on. Shut your eyes please. Put your hands out."
Serena compiled. She felt a weight in her palms.
"Open them now."
She tentatively opened her eyes, taking in the contents in front of her.
"You daft woman! Where did you get this lot from?"
"On-line. They arrived a couple days ago. I remembered you saying you missed Matchmakers over the festive season, so I purchased the four flavour bundle for you."
"Mint, orange, caramel coffee, oh, and honeycomb...," Serena chuckled giving Bernie a knowing look.
"So, umm, will this satisfy your craving?"
"Of course!" Serena placed each box onto her bedside table, noticing as she did so that the honeycomb box was already opened. She lifted a stick of chocolate out, seductively placing one end into Bernie's mouth.
"A little more empirical research with this flavour, don't you think, darling?" She put the other end of the chocolate into her own mouth. The lovers bit down onto the Matchmaker until their mouths met in a crushing, passionate kiss.
Serena knew this was the best first of December morning ever.

Weekly Berena Fix for 2024?
A few people have started to ask if there is going to be a Berena fix back for 2024, I hinted at it during one of my advent posts and I’d definitely be up for it if there is enough interest.
The weekly Berena fix was started at what was a awful time in canon for our ladies and the name felt right I guess especially as it has another meaning it can stay unless people want it to change (fix in the sense of a weekly dose of our beautiful ladies)
I don’t believe this blog follows or is followed by as many in the fandom as the advent blog so please help me get this out there and we can see if we can’t reinstate it for 2024!

Works published: 74, very similar to last year! a bit less but the year also isn’t over yet :D edit: by the time I’m getting around to post this, it’s on 86! Yay!
Wordcount: 118254 I’m happy I made it past 100k! That was my tentative goal and I didn’t think I’d make it with how slow it came along for most of the year, but with flufftober and the events I did manage :D

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Ah. It's complicated. During the last year I only had comments like "Please finish this!" and no, most of the times I don't respond to them. While I LOVE comments and use them to motivate myself to get back to writing, I find comments that don't even say why someone would like me to continue a store utterly unhelpful. Also there's my beloved ADHD brain, which makes me forget to answer sometimes. I will though, even if it's like stupidly late.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
*chuckles* Well, I wrote this fic with Bernie's thoughts while she's dying under the rubble after they killed her in an explosion off screen. Lucky for most of you preferring a happy ending to your angst, I did not publish it. Instead I rewrote it to become a chapter for my collaboration with the lovely @ktlsyrtis

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I feel like all my fics have a happy ending. I love a bit of angst, but seriously life is bad enough without giving your favs a happy ending after putting them through the mangler.

8. Do you get hate on fic?
Huh. If so, it apparently was too irrelevant to remember.
9. Do you write smut?
Yes, I do. And I honestly love to connect them via smut with feelings.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I do love a good film au. I have dozens of ideas what films to cast them for and I've only written two so far, with another three sitting in my WIP folder.
My crossover ideas aren't that crazy actually, but maybe
the slow appraisal of silent things
might fall into the category, because why not mash up Lynley and my love for Berena, replace the old Helen with Catherine's Helen, and have her leave Lynley (as one should do), to fall in love with Jemma's Grace Finegann (who did not shoot anyone).
Others might say that it was absolutely crazy to write my first Berena fic, which is also a crossover, without ever having watched a single episode of Holby.

I don't think so.

Not to my knowledge.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! I wrote

Nope. Not going there. All my WIPs have a chance to being finished. It took me almost three years to finish Notting Hill. I might get inspired on something that's been sitting in my drafts for longer. Who knows - certainly not me. I won't give up though!
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'd say dialogue with feelings and with smut also showing without spelling things out in detail.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Commas and formatting. *chuckles* Apologies to all the lovely people who ever beta'd for me. I appreciate you so, sooo much.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I could have them speak German and Italian and would, if I found it necessary. I prefer to have a translation in the notes at least while reading fic.

Ah. Something wlw that I'm not looking back to.
