Jedi June - Compassion

My entrance for Jedi June Sunday Prompt Compassion. Read it here on ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39451506/chapters/98737710

The desert finds a way to rub the facades off people, revealing them. Perhaps because of the sand that flies across the desert, the people are rough, blunt, and not fond of hiding or beating around the bush. It’s refreshing, Obi-Wan finds, and reminds him ever so slightly of Mace’s honesty. The less smokescreens between him and whoever he talks to, the easier it is for him to do what he needs. Today, it’s getting kurit fruit.

“5 peggat a fruit and no less,” Pesiri says with an apologetic frown, “damned imperial checkpoints’re driving up the prices, Ben.” The kel dor’s mask rattles slightly as he breathes in. It didn’t do that in the beginning, but Obi-Wan guesses that the price of fruit is not the only thing affected by the rise in Imperial taxation and checkpoints.

A togruta with orange and white montrals passing by scoffs, “five peggat? You’re crazy thinking anyone will pay that.”

Distaste colours the air around Pesiri. “Well I wasn’t talking to you now was I.” The togruta sneers but moves on towards the bar. “Sorry ‘bout him Ben. The locals’re up in arms with the prices.”

“No worries.” Obi-Wan shuffles in his purse for the money. He’d been trying to save up to set up a small farming plot in the basement of his hovel, but the fruit came first now. He took out the 15 peggat necessary for three fruit. He’d wanted four, but he could only buy three. “I’ll have three?”

Pesiri took the money, counted it and then nodded. “Help yourself.” He absently gestures at the kurit. Bowing his head in thanks, Obi-Wan began pocketing three. “Damned imps’re getting desperate. They’re hunting down ‘traitors’ left right and centre.” Obi-Wan tried hard not to flinch. “Caught a Jedi three days ago, I think? Executed him on old Corrie. Front of the palace.” Pesiri sat back into the shade of his stall, a look of disgust pulling his features. “Barbaric if y’ask me. Killing a Jedi right there.”

“Quite.” Obi-Wan manages to cough out, placing the three kurit in his bag gently. He rubs at his mouth, still unused to the way his hair had become coarse on Tatooine.

“Them Jedi. Poor sods. All of them.” Pesiri sighs and shakes his head. “Saved me’n my siblings once. Imperial bastards’re lying about them if y’ask me.”

Obi-Wan tilts his head in acknowledgment, and speaks with caution colouring his tone. “Those words will get you killed, Pesiri. Best be careful what you say.”

Pesiri sighs again, harsher this time. “I know, I know. Doubt they’ll bother much with a small trader on this shithole, though.”

“No, perhaps not. But still, better to stay alive, yes?” Obi-Wan quietly says, straightening. Pesiri nods gruffly in farewell. “Thank you, Pesiri.”

“Be seeing ya, Ben.”

Three kurit heavier, but 15 peggat lighter, Obi-Wan walks away from Pesiri’s stall and disappears into the throng of customers in the market area.

All around him are the yells of customers and vendors. The customer haggle viciously at the elevated prices and the vendors reluctantly lower the prices just slightly. Obi-Wan keeps his head down as though unaffected by any of the noise. He reaches his next stop having only been bothered thrice by desperate vendors offering their wares on foot.

He knocks on the door in three sharp knocks and a nervous face pokes out after a moment. Suspicion turns to relief quickly when she sees its him, though worry still pricks at the corner of her eyes and seeps into the wrinkles of her face. “Ben. You’re here. Good.” Ana waves him in with a casual flick of her olive green skin.

Ana’s an elder of Tatooine who has known no other planet save the one she currently resides on. She hobbles as she moves into the cooler areas of her house. A single green plant, a weed on some other planet that managed to hike a ride to Tatooine, grows tall, defying the belief that Tatooine has no fauna.

“Kitchen’s been dying on me if I turn the heat too high,” Ana points at the small kitchen in the corner where there lies clear signs of tinkering, “I tried all the tricks, I did, but it won’t start now.” Obi-Wan smiles fondly, hidden by his beard. “And the cooler’s started to slow down. Sand’s in the filter, I know, but well…my hands aren’t as good as they used to be for that.” She frowns and readjusts her head covering nervously, peering up at Obi-Wan with dark brown eyes. The black markings on her face, intricate drops and diamonds, are cut across with wrinkles. “Will you help me, Ben?”

He lays a gentle hand on her shoulder, “of course.” It’ll take all evening, definitely. Her cooler is an ancient model that takes twice as long to disassemble and assemble as any of the newer models, but still. Ana’s been a friend to him before; he’ll help her now. “I bought some kurit for you as well.” The smile that winks in her eyes flashes and Obi-Wan can not help but grin back, more visible.

“Too good for me, you are, hmm?” She hobbles over to his bag, undoing the strap and reaching for the three fruits, some of the only fruit soft enough for her to eat. Ana holds them preciously to her body as she moves to the fruit bowl. “You will be having a taste, Ben.” Obi-Wan hums non comitally as he peers at the cooker stove, fiddling with one part or another before determining the issue; a faulty wiring connection. Anakin would have noticed m- He stops the line of thought, blinking and breathing in peace before Ana can notice his pause.

She hums as she cuts the fruit into wedges, and Obi-Wan hurriedly fixes the wiring. “It should be alright now?” He turns it on full heat, watching as it burns for a few seconds before turning it off.

He turns to the cooler, pushing the couple strands of hair that fall into his vision from his forehead. Cleaning the filter is a common task he must complete. It’s relatively easy, but tedious, and it can be difficult for people with hands as old and worn as Ana’s to clean the small filters. He pries off the filtering carefully, laying them down. Gently, making sure that the delicate filters aren’t broken in the process, he brushes off the dust that accumulates. It’s a brainless task, but it takes time and Ana has long since finished cutting her fruit and preparing her latemeal when he finally finishes.

His cramping hands remind him he is getting older, he’s getting older as he is so often reminded. Ana’s stirring the soup on the fixed stove. He wanders to her with the cleaned coolers, “I’ve finished the coolers. Should I install them for you?”

“Yes, but you must have some soup.” She turns and fixes him with a withering look. “Help can be freely given, Ben, as can a gift.” Ben hums and looks at the sky, thinking of when he must be home, and what time it currently is.

“I can’t stay long, Ana, I apologise.” The elderly Mirialan prepares to convince him to stay. “I can, however, have some kurit.” She relents, placated, and turns to grab the bowl of cut fruit. He reaches and reluctantly takes one wedge of fruit, savouring the taste of sweet fruit on his tongue before spitting out the pits once the juice and flesh is all gone. “Thank you Ana.”

She peers at him shrewdly as he reaches to pick up his cloak. “You give too easy, Ben. Giving is, for one like you, easy.” She smiles and offers the bowl of cut fruit again. “You should learn to accept what is given as well.”

Obi-Wan watches the bowl warily, reaching out to hover his hand over the bowl. Ana easily takes one and puts it in her mouth, gesturing to him to do the same. Obi-Wan’s indecision finishes and he picks up another wedge, eating it and spitting out the seeds. Ana reaches for his seeds. “Was it so difficult?”

Obi-Wan grins, chagrined and with a bowed head. “I suppose…not.” Ana smiles and pats his head, leaning up and tugging him to press a blessing to his forehead with her index finger.

“For your safety, Ben.”

He reaches out and returns the blessing, “And with you, Ana.” With one last bow he makes his way back to the stables where his eopie rests.

His eopie is right where he left her, quietly waiting for him to return, hopefully with a small snack of meat he brings when he works. Today there’s nothing and she buts his shoulder when she realises. Nevertheless, she follows easily when he leads her out of the city towards the endless dunes.

so I uhh...watched the Ballum proposal.

I will say that I’m impressed that they managed to do the kiss part with social distancing.

But god the rest. Hahaha. I realize we got a double proposal and I liked it well enough but does everyone have to have a double proposal? Is that just a gay ship trope? Because I know they did it with the ship from neighbors too and I think Kate and Rana on Corrie right? They kind of need to try something new.

With all the Lexi involvement, I’m just picturing Liv being too involved/more involved than she was in the proposal and interrupting it like that and I would have been so angry but I guess since she’s actually Ben’s kid, it’s not completely terrible. But also there was just so much going on, you kind of miss the emotional resonance of it. I don’t know...I guess I also don’t care so there’s that. Haha.

Also, I lost it at the song because I can really only picture that super awkward Jackson and Aaron kiss when I hear that song.

So basically, I’m reminded why I stopped keeping up with Ballum and I will go back to not watching.

Heretics

Jedi

Bela Rant

Togruta Jedi Master and mother Master of four Padawans children. Not a favourite of the Council due to differences in interpretation of the Code. Had an ongoing feud with Qui Gon Jinn that lasted until he died. She died in the war ten years later and Col took over her command.

Alask Racor

Grumpy Twi’lek first Padawan of Bela, had two Padawans of his own but was killed by pirates before the second was knighted.

Reya Meraska

Alask’s first Padawan. A human from Jedha and compassion incarnate. Had an uneventful apprenticeship and grew up to be comparatively quiet compared to the rest.

Ben Edo

Reya’s first and so far only Padawan. The model of a perfect Jedi except for thinking their interpretation of the Code is bullshit. Would have made one hell of a politician if he could stand the Senate. From Dantooine.

Tol Koden

Alask’s second Padawan, a very polite Zabrak. Alask died when he was 17 and Jos took over his training. He and Ben are the same age and were raised basically together.

Jos Vel

Stubborn and opinionated Kiffar. Bela’s second Padawan. Had her own (equally stubborn and opinionated) Padawan and then took over Tol’s training when Alask died.

Harlan Konshi

Jos’s Padawan. Also a Kiffar. Would also make a fine politician because being raised by Jos taught him to argue. He’s a bit of a jackass but in a charming way. Like, he’s a prick but you still like him.

Azaana Tyl

Harlan’s sweet, quiet, shy Togruta Padawan. Jos laughed so hard when she heard about that. Harlan is trying to teach her self-confidence. The baby of the family.

Col Blackmoor

Bela’s third and most disastrous Padawan. The former Temple Problem Child (now Temple Problem Adult). Not that he spends much time in the Temple. Was so far out on the Outer Rim he didn’t find out there was a war on until he had to come back and take over Bela’s legion. The worst case of ADHD the Temple has ever seen.

Lena Sola

Col took her in after an incident with her former Master almost saw her kicked out of the Order. Col intervened. She’s still uncomfortable around most Jedi, but they’re working on it. Sweet kid. Kage.

Aden Jadus

Bela’s final Padawan, knighted just before Geonosis. Yes, she’s from Tatooine. No, that does not mean she knows Skywalker. Stop asking.

Not-Jedi

Vale

The oldest of the bunch, Reya’s Commander. Has enough Big Dad Energy to build a deck at 20 paces. Meat grills in his presence and the shinies all fear his disappointed frown.

Nill

Jos’s Commander. Deeply claustrophobic. A nice, likeable guy unless you piss him off. Caffeine demon.

Jax

Clone Commander and Col Wrangler in Chief, Col regards his Commander with barely disguised awe. He considers him his closest friend. For his part, Jax thinks similarly highly of Col. He likes to draw when he gets spare time (rarely). Grew up with Sonny and Cody. Very protective of Lena.

Crater

Professional Ray of Sunshine, the exact opposite of his twin. Crater and Crash grew up with Wolffe. Crater was assigned to Ben, and he likes his General, really, but the man never sleeps. It’s starting to stress him out.

Click

Professional Salt Mine assigned to the Galaxy’s Politest Jedi because apparently the GAR runs on irony. Makes Wolffe look like a ray of happy, happy sunshine.

Pip

The perpetual optimist to Aden’s incredible pessimist. Remains stubbornly cheerful by choice, because if he doesn’t laugh he doesn’t think he’ll ever stop crying.

Dexter

Professional Grouchy Bastard. Likes Harlan well enough but will absolutely tell him he’s full of shit. If Azaana likes you, Dexter will tolerate your existence. If you make Azaana sad they will never find your body. A training accident left him with scars and a deep growl in his voice that makes him sound angrier than he is.

Stitch

Col’s CMO and the only person Jax legitimately fears. Deeply wishes his siblings and General would get injured less and look after themselves more. Is willing to enforce this with sedatives.

Zip

The Right Hand of God (Stitch’s second in command). He who wields the big needles.

Layne

Cheerful but stressed Captain of a company of reckless idiots who really should know better but apparently don’t. He should be used to it. He grew up with Rex.

Trip and Tap

Two survivors of Krell reassigned to Col. Tap has a nervous habit of tapping his fingers. Trip can trip over thin air.

Jazz, Snap and Void

A trio. Jazz likes to wander off. Void likes to hide. Snap likes to complain they’re giving him grey hair from the stress of having them disappearing all the time.

Ray and Rico

The product of an embryo that split, Ray and Rico lived in fear of being culled as defects on Kamino. They’ve since left Kamino, but the fear hasn’t left them.

Lys

A tired medic who would like Dexter to drink something that isn’t caf please.

Tyke

The medic with the most agreeable Jedi (Tol). He barely has to bully him into seeking medical attention at all. Such a shame that his Commander seems determined to make up for it by being a complete bastard. If Click wants to get tackled in the hallway, that’s his lookout.

Rill

Has a particular interest in medical research. Or he would if he ever had the time.

Corrie

The youngest CMO in the GAR. Just barely 18, only on the field for six months and never meant to be CMO at all. But she’s the only medic Pip’s got left after that clusterfuck, so they’re all doing their best. She might be young but she will absolutely yell at a commander you see if she doesn’t.

New Dawn Crew

Not-Clones

Mira Vin

A female Kiffar former Jedi whose Master died on Geonosis. The Council were going to knight her and make her a General, so she told Windu to stick it up his ass and ran away to the Outer Rim to harass slavers and save “defective” clones.

Kell Vekarr

An Alderaanian former Jedi who was rescued from slavers as a child. Finally took the 20 remaining members of his command and ran when the rest were killed over Ando. Jaster’s boyfriend. Autistic.

Jaster Toran

True Mandalorian bounty hunter who was betrayed by a client and sold into slavery. Joined the crew upon his rescue four years later. Kell’s boyfriend. Autistic.

Riye Toran

Jaster’s older sister who joined the crew to look for him and then stuck around because she liked it there.

Volya’tar

Twi’lek former slave who freed herself and stole a ship. Pilot, mechanic and Mira’s best friend.

Pash Colton

Dyspraxic dyslexic Corellian with more brains than sense. An engineering genius who has wisdom as his dump stat. Also sometimes a smuggler.

Jaina Bell

Tiny and terrifying. Orphaned at a young age and grew up to be a smuggler, mechanic and pilot.

Ela

Nonbinary Lorrdian. Has a long horrendous Lorrdian name they never use. Joined the crew because slavers suck and anything that makes their lives difficult is a good thing. Stuck around for the people.

Black Company

Halcyon

An ARC Captain known for his green hair and endless patience. Considers Kell a close friend but calls him Commander regardless. Used to fight Rex a lot as a kid. Please let this man rest.

Bones

Halcyon’s batchmate and Black Company’s CMO. A cranky bugger, but that’s understandable considering what he deals with daily.

Pax

The peacemaker between his idiot brothers and everyone else for as long as they can remember. A chill guy, but even chill guys have limits.

Tracyn and Carud

Two of the Nightmare Children. Their names are fire and smoke and they cause a lot of both, raising Pax’s blood pressure and driving Bones into apoplectic rage.

Isa

Jaro’s long suffering sister. Usually has to track him down to make him go to sleep. Has a weekly commiseration session with Ari (alcohol optional but recommended).

Jaro

Named for the Mando’a word for reckless and boy howdy is it accurate. The ADHD doesn’t help.

Ari

Rio’s batchmate and she loves her brother dearly but she is so done with his shit.

Rio

The last of the original Nightmare Children, ADHD disaster and source of most of Bones’s workload.

Kee and Jam

Nonbinary comms officers who bicker very cheerfully. Usually with each other. Often at high volume through the halls of the ship.

Torin

Gay artist baby.

Kol

Gay artist bastard.

Charly

Honestly he’s just here for a laugh and his brothers respect him for it. You’ve got to find your joy where you can get it these days.

Dys

Takes great delight in moving Set’s things just a couple of centimetres. Just enough to annoy him. Will deck anyone else who tries the same thing.

Set

Also known as Corporal Square Corners. Everything has to be neat and tidy. He was a godsend before inspections. Now he’s just the reason people have somewhere to sit.

Slip

Known for giving his trainers the slip and disappearing into the bowels of Kamino when they were doing training exercises he didn’t like and then getting stuck and having to be retrieved by Chase.

Chase

More like chase-ing his brother through the halls of Kamino to keep him out of trouble. There’s a running joke that he should have ended up in search and rescue.

Bright

Was he named for his bright red hair or as an ironic comment on his general outlook on life? Who knows? Not him. A pessimist if there ever was one.

Impulse

Full name Have-You-Ever-Heard-Of-Impulse-Control and no, he hasn’t.

Cuyan Squad

Sonny

A naturally blond, autistic, Force-sensitive Commander who survived Kamino by the skin of his teeth. Grew up with Cody and Jax. Hyper efficient Can, will and has broken people’s faces for saying shit about the Coruscant Guard.

Zak

Force-sensitive Captain who despises soup and has incredible claustrophobia. Good with kids though. Autistic.

Force-sensitive autistic Lieutenant. Quieter than Zak, and fully supports his vendetta against soup. Has his own vendetta against food that stabs you in the mouth.

Bang

Force-sensitive bomb-tech. Partially deafened in an explosion which also gave him some pretty intense scarring. Gets nervous when he can’t see people behind him.

Bit

Force-sensitive techie with a penchant for weapons modification and data slicing. Gives the best hugs in the squad.

Tink

If it’s broken Tink can fix it. The resident ADHD Force-sensitive techie. Has a tendency to hyperfocus on projects to the exclusion of all else.

Flow

De facto squad medic because he’s the best at Force-healing of the lot of them. He does not appreciate this, this is not what he trained for, you’re voiding his warranty, vode please. Dyed his hair purple because he could.

Edge

Thrill seeker with electric blue hair and boundless energy. The ADHD doesn’t help with the fidgeting, but he likes to go fast so Force-augmented speed is pretty great.

Ry and Cas

True twins born from the same tube, they’re the Fred and George Weasley of clones. They’ve got the red hair and everything. Judicious use of the Force makes pranks far easier.

Caj, Chess and Blade

The brothers in charge of the homebrew alcohol. The taste is a work in progress, but the last batch didn’t make anyone go blind.

Rictor and Sike

Survivors of Krell who deal with their trauma in very different ways. Rictor is terrified of authority in case they turn out like Krell. Sike figures if he survived that he can survive anything and mouths off constantly.

Kano and Oly

Batchmates who were reconditioned separately (for nightmares and injury, respectively) and reunited upon Kano’s rescue. Oly had been with the crew for months by then. They both cried.

Sitrep, Conn and Sig

Three more nonbinary comms officers. A cheerful bunch who like to argue. Usually with each other. The problems started when they started arguing with their General.

Aran, Orar and Tay

Three heavy gunners who fight TJ a lot because the little twerp is asking for it (literally). Tay is relentlessly cheerful, Aran the exact opposite, and you’re lucky to get three words out of Orar in a row.

Ani, Mirdir and Dajun

Techies and mechanics who prefer wires to people. Mirdir and Dajun have known each other since birth and bicker a lot. Ani mostly ignores them.

Dane

A captain who finally snapped and told his General where he could stick his suicidal orders.

Sprint

Full name Slow-Down-There’s-No-Need-To-Sprint, a six foot ball of energy and barely contained enthusiasm. Usually found hurtling around the place at ludicrous speeds.

Crash

An anxious, autistic pilot who has never crashed his ship. He has, however, crashed himself into doors, siblings, training sergeants.

Rainer

A really chill guy who got shipped off for being too violent after a misunderstanding about a sparring match. TJ’s favourite sparring partner.

Likes to fight, does not care if his opponent could physically snap him in half. Sometimes he just has to beat his brain into submission via getting the crap beaten out of his body. Usually succeeds in provoking the heavy gunners into fighting him.

Zero

TJ’s perpetually worried brother. Really wishes TJ would chill. Dyslexic and has a recurring leg injury that won’t heal. Gets bored easily.

Brook and Storm

A pair of total nerds who get so engrossed in arguing that they don’t realise they’re about to walk into a tree. Frequently wander off and have to be returned.

Jai, Tala, Teek, Niko and Galaar

Five ARCs who got sent back to Kamino for telling their General to go kriff himself. Jai is Force-sensitive. Galaar is just a prick with a terrible sense of humour.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on those who think KO work on corrie and ee have not been able to match her work on ed. I know you do not watch the other soaps but it's sort of weird to see people praising her work on ed as it being ed's golden age and how she was passed about to other soaps in the hope she could do the same. I cannot actually remember when her work started and ended but ik she had lots of ross which people are comparing to her ben love. overall did you like her work?

KO (in my opinion) was always more suited to EE. It’s a grittier darker soap which works less well on Emmerdale (quaint village life) and Corrie (which does get dark but they like to keep the lighter side and she failed on that point. Pat Phelan SHOULD have been an EE creation, not Corrie.) Even before we knew about producer musical chairs, I felt she’d be far better on EE than Corrie at that time.

KO’s Emmerdale era was fine. It was! There were bad bits, massive mistakes, and good bits and great bits. The problem is when you’re looking back at anything, you tend to forget the bad bits and focus on the “that was SO good!” bits! It’s why I never get the IM/Emmerdale love. Yeah, he created SSW16 which was epic. He also had a different cheating plot every single month, so... everyone's got flaws and successes! It just depends which flaws bother you less as to which producer you like more!

For me personally, KO was okay to good on Emmerdale. robron affair obviously, but she does have a habit to make her male characters either bad guys or walk overs with no middle ground imo. KO made two emmerdale MASSIVE mistakes in her run. Killing Val when the actress had asked for a break and wanted to return in the future. And Zak/Joanie. Both incredibly stupid, but Zak cheating was his “villain” story under KO. Paddy cheating with Tess is up there too btw.

KO is fine as a producer. But she NEVER fitted in at Corrie imo. I don’t know if this answers anything!

Manchester gutter punks, The Battery Farm, talk to us about horrific crime inspiring a song and how they just had to form this band...

We’ve got frontman/guitarist Ben from the band.

Alright Ben, can you tell us about the band. Who plays what and how the band got together?

Hallo! We are The Battery Farm, four gutter bastards from Manchester playing gnarly, seething punk rock music.

Ben Corry on Vocals and Guitar, Dominic Corry on Guitar, Paul Worrall on Bass, Sam Parkinson on Drums. Me and Dom formed this band from the ashes of a band we'd previously been in together for 8 years. At the point we formed The Battery Farm we were in a low place, feeling like failures, feeling defeated by this thing that we'd built for years just imploding, feeling angry and scared and hopeless at the utter state of the world. We basically decided to do this in the pub one night when we felt like we had absolutely nothing to lose. It was formed as a desperate reaction to two lives and minds spiralling out of control in a hostile, hateful world.

That must have been tough but, seems like it’s worked out well and the band from what I can tell is going from strength to strength. How soon did you find the remaining members, Paul and Sam? What have they brought to the band?

It has actually. Helpfully, it was a fertile environment from which to create. The first wave of songs - stuff like I Am a Man - are the purest distillation of that sense of lashing out, that sense of desperation we were feeling at the time.

We found Paul pretty much straight away. I'd known him for years through Manchester's Fringe theatre scene, having been in a couple of plays with him. He'd come to see me in a play, I knew he was a musician as well as an actor (although I don't think I'd grasped just how good he is), so I asked if he fancied playing bass for our new band. Sam we actually didn't know before the band, and it took a little longer to get him in. He works for the same company i do and I'd heard he was a drummer, so I got his contact details, asked him if he fancied coming for a rehearsal with us. It all clicked, and the rest is history.

Paul and Sam bring a massive amount to the band. They lift the songs me and Dom write and add a very particular combination of power and melody which you'll be hard pressed to come by very often. They're fucking ace and they know what is good for the song. No ego, no fucking about. They know what's important.

Sounds like you needed that new band to form quickly and to find drummer and bassist when you did you was very fortunate. I watched an interview of you and Dom recently and you talked about inspiration for songwriting and I was interested in where 97/91 came from. When it comes to writing where do you first look to for ideas?

Yeah we did, finding a drummer was comparitively difficult and I think if we'd have really struggled then we honestly would have just given up on it. 97/91 came about after I read an article about the murder of Suzanne Capper in Moston, north Manchester, which is where me and Dom grew up. I'm not going to go into details but if you look it up you'll see that it's the most horrific thing you've ever read. It stuck with me for weeks afterwards, and part of that was because I knew the streets where it had taken place and the community in which it had taken place. The houses it happened in - numbers 97 and 91 - are still there to this day. I got to thinking about why I reacted so viscerally to that story in particular; atrocities happen every day and we don't bat an eyelid, not really. It had such an impact because I was so familiar with the setting, so familiar with the type of person involved. It was too real. 97/91 explores the idea that we make a trade-off in our lives, one which enables cognitive dissonance that shields us from the impact the mass, relentless violence of the world. It also means that when something evil happens in a familiar setting the impact is much greater.

How can it only be real when you can see it? 97/91 isn't necessarily about the Capper murder itself, but the murder is a jumping off point to explore the faustian pact at the heart of the human condition, the one that keeps us sane but also ebbs away at our souls.

Our ideas just literally come from trying to explain our perspective on the world, we don't necessarily make a conscious effort to look in one place for ideas. We just write about whatever moves us. That can be mental illness, corrupt political systems, or the fact that I've never been to Gorton, which is literally the title of one of our new songs.

I find reading about crime stories really interesting, it’s madness what goes on in this world! This is one I’m not aware of but this must have been difficult to write about with it being so close to home? I love the anger and aggression in your music and lyrics.

You mentioned being an actor earlier, do you think this has an influence on your performance as a front man?

Yeah I went through a short phase of listening to true crime podcasts earlier this year but i had to stop bec it was all too grim. It was difficult to explore the ideas that particular incident led me onto but the endgame wasn't to just write about the murder itself, so I suppose keeping that in mind kept my head clear and made things easier.

Honestly, i try to keep any ideas of acting and theatre separate from the band. The actor thing can be frustrating at times because people conflate that with what I do in the band and think that everything must be a performance of some kind, which it isn't. The whole idea of putting The Battery Farm together was that it could give us an outlet to express ourselves honestly, and to me the stuff I do as a frontman is just an honest reaction to what I'm singing and what it makes me feel. I try not to overthink that aspect of it because I feel like to do so would water it down. It needs to be raw, it needs to be stark, it needs to be reality. If it's an actor's performance I'm not really getting anything out of it.

It’s amazing how reading/listening to one can lead on to another one. But yeah hard to shake off once you’ve learned about them.

You’re performance on stage seems very honest and I love to see in a frontman.

Moving on to the music scene...Manchester in particular is buzzing at the minute. Did the band find it easy to slot in? What’s been your favourite gig up to now?

We did actually. We knew a couple of people anyway from being in previous bands but until now I'd always found the Manchester scene a little unfriendly. It's totally different now. Not only is it overflowing with incredible, original, exciting new bands but it's also full of amazing people, and in the year we've been gigging we've made some wonderful friends. There's a proper sense of inclusivity and community, a lack of ego and aloofness that wasn't there before.

My favourite, and I think the others would agree with me, is our first headline set which was at The Peer Hat last November. It was an Abattoir Blues night and they're always amazing. The venue was packed to capacity and the atmosphere was electric. It was the kind of big, simmering sweatbox that seems impossible to imagine in the current climate. I want every gig we play to be like that one.

Yeah it’s great to see bands appreciating each other’s music and plugging their stuff on social media etc. I love going to Manchester for a gig. It’s a great time for guitar music in the UK at the minute with bands like Idles, Fontaines DC and Sports Team doing really well. And also The Blinders bringing album 2 out very soon!

That gig sounds like a great night!

When all this is over and we get some normality back...what are the bands plans?

Well, we're heading into the studio later this summer to begin work on... something. Beyond that it's hard to say because like everyone else we can't really make plans at the moment. Like everyone else we're pretty much having to make it up as we go along. We do have gigs booked for November and December but whether they'll happen or not remains up to fate. Everything going to plan, we may be in for an exciting end to the year. Maybe.

Gonna be very exciting for all bands and music once gigs/recording etc can happen again isn’t it.

Got so many new bands I want to see. Have you discovered any new bands during lockdown? If not, what have you been listening to?

Lockdown's actually been really fruitful in terms of new bands releasing amazing stuff. I've been listening to a lot of Tinfoils recently, they're a delight! Also been loving new stuff from Cold Water Swimmers, The Red Stains, Richard Carlson Band, The Maitlands, loads of stuff. I've also recently discovered John Shuttleworth, a comedy singer from Sheffield who does weird Phoenix Club-type songs about stuff like margerine and vans. I love stuff like that, real end of the pier nonsense.

I love Tinfoils and down to have them on here in Wigan but then lockdown came. The other bands I’m aware of too but not the solo artists you’ve mentioned.

Yeah Tinfoils are great. John Shuttleworth has been around for years i think. I can imagine he won't be to everyone's taste. Richard Carlson Band are actually named after the actor Richard Carlson, who was in The Creatire From the Black Lagoon. There is no Richard Carlson in that band! They're absolutely ace, they released their debut single a few weeks ago and I've had it on repeat.

It was surreal. Utterly surreal. Looking at four men dressed in drag wasn’t really such a big deal. With the fake boobs and leather skirt, there was no way that anyone would mistake Freddie for anyone but Freddie. Considering that his signature moustache was a dead giveaway. Brian’s lustrous curly hair aided his performance as a woman but the plume of chest hair poking from the top of the pink satin nightgown gave him away. John was slightly more conspicuous though it wasn’t hard to dress him up. A coat, hat and a glimpse of a grey wig meant that by a glance he could pass for anyone’s granny. Roger, however, was a completely different story. His feminine good looks were the inspiration for the whole video. When Y/N had joked about it she hadn’t expected it to go this far. Watching him in a school uniform, tights clinging to his shapely legs with a blond wig perfectly coiffed instead of its usual unruly mess left him looking like a dead ringer for any normal British school girl. It was surreal.

When Roger told the boys the plan for the video none of them said anything, they just sort of looked at him in confusion. Brian was the first one to say anything, ‘I’m sorry you want to dress in drag?’ ‘Yeah,’ Roger said nonchalantly. ‘As women?’ ‘That’s what drag means Bri, dress as the opposite sex,’ Y/N chuckled. ‘Like drag queens?’ John asked. ‘No, no, like normal women. Housewives, school kids whatever. It’s I want to break free right? So the premise is four women sick of their life and want to break out of the mundane. Think Corrie, Vera Duckworth becoming Bette Lynch.’ ‘Sounds alright to me,’ Freddie said with a smile, ‘I think I’d make a brilliant Bette.’ ‘Yeah I’m sure you would Fred,’ Brian said, ‘well make sure to get something in leopard print eh?’ ‘Well,’ Roger said, ‘maybe leather not leopard.’ ‘Now you’re talking,’ Freddie said coyly, ‘but I’m keeping the moustache.’

‘Roger,’ the video director said as he moved onto the dingy living room set that was the ‘girls’ home. Roger was standing by the sink in the kitchen part of the set in his full school uniform whilst the boys were in the other room. ‘Alright mate I need you to dance all the way through whilst we run the other bits, ignore Brian just continue with whatever you’re doing and we’ll do your god knows part next take alright?’ ‘Yeah mate,’ Roger said. ‘Alright roll camera, quiet on set. Run through again,’ the director said as he prepared his band on videographers to shoot. The process was tedious even if the idea was great. Playback of the song fed through speakers in hopes the band could mime perfectly so there were no mishaps. Freddie and Brian had the most running around of the lot but even John found it exhausting flipping through the paper after a few hours. Just as they were shooting their final take before lunch Y/N arrived. Roger’s eyes spotted her through the poorly lit warehouse immediately his eyes spotting her tiny bump straight after. He gave her a quick smile and wink before returning his attention to shoot the final take of the morning. About twenty minutes or so later they wrapped for an hour and the boys chatted with the director for a moment before having a band discussion. Seeing that it wasn’t a serious conversation Y/N sidled up towards Roger and slid in between him and John. Roger looked down at her with a smile before wrapping one arm around her shoulders and pressing a kiss into her temple before continuing his conversation. ‘I’m just saying Deaky, don’t you think grandma bursting into dance would be best? I mean, not as if she’s doing a lot is it,’ Roger chuckled. ‘Grandma’s had both hips replaced, she can’t dance,’ John challenged ‘Oh really?’ ‘Yep, you see I find creating a backstory really helps me get into character,’ he smiled smugly before reaching out to pinch one of Roger’s cheeks for a moment before he was swatted away. ‘Yeah Rog, and if you were committed I think you’d forgo the tights AND socks that are hiding those hairy legs and just have a shave,’ Freddie said. ‘Like you-you mean?’ Brian asked gesturing to Freddie’s moustache and legs. The boys started to rough house but luckily it was cut short as there was a call about the food table being open and they dispersed, hungry after a morning’s work. Roger turned to Y/N. ‘You want to grab some food? I can fix you a plate.’ ‘I’m alright actually,’ Y/N said, ‘been sick as a dog all morning.’ ‘Oh sweetheart,’ he said pulling her in for a hug his arms resting around her back whilst she hovered unsure of where to place them as underneath his shirt felt rather bulky. ‘Um, babe.’ ‘Yeah?’ ‘Have you rolled your skirt up?’ She asked with a cocked eyebrow to which Roger looked at her unable to speak before he stuttered an explanation. ‘Well you know the skirt was rather long I said I’d be a school girl, not a nun.’ ‘You’d get in trouble for a uniform like that at my school.’ ‘I always bent the rules.’ ‘I’m sure you did,’ she said, ‘you’ve got to be careful otherwise I’ll have to ask you to get on your knees and measure your skirt with a ruler.’ ‘Down on my knees huh?’ He said flirtily, ‘I see Catholic school didn’t do you any favours.’ ‘Don’t worry if you’re lucky I’ll show you what my school uniform looked like later,’ she said with a wink before slipping from his grasp and heading to where the boys were eating lunch.

Lunch was as it always was, a raucous affair. The boys had spent the morning being somewhat professional and now like actual school children, their pent-up energy was being released on the schoolyard. Y/N watched them rolling her eyes at their antics and even managed to have a bite to eat. She had agreed with Roger to come early to the shoot and watch the session before they would head to their hospital appointment for the first scan of the baby. All too soon the boys were pulled back to work and cracked on for another good few hours. As the time neared four o’clock Y/N got antsy she didn’t think they’d be late but her personality always made her anxious to make it with time to spare. ‘Right lads I think we’re just about done,’ the director said, ‘just a couple of bits to tie down I think.’

Without saying a word Y/N was able to convey a message to her husband telepathically, that or he knew instinctively how she hated to be pushed for time.

‘Sorry Paul,’ he spoke up from his seat at the dinner table, ‘I need to wrap things up soon if possible got an appointment.’ ’Right, Erm Okay, I’m sure if we need anything off you we can get it one of our other days,’ he said visibly annoyed that they couldn’t wrap everything up today. The boys nodded and said their goodbyes, understanding of his need to leave as Roger had spoken in excitement about seeing his kid for days on end. Roger waved as he walked off the set and headed to the band's dressing room Y/N in tow. They entered a relatively small room which bore little. There was a dressing table and mirrors on the wall backlit by singular bulbs surrounding each separate mirror. There were chairs made for reclining and a couch in the corner with a small coffee table in front of it and a lone potted plant in the corner. Roger entered in a sweeping way and went to sit at the makeup chair watching as Y/N entered behind him and moved to the table before slipping up onto it. He pulled the wig off and shook out his blond locks.

‘You know I see no difference,’ she said looking at him. He looked at her and smirked before saying, ‘shut up.’ ‘No I’m serious,’ she chuckled, ‘you’re so pretty. I’d say you look better than me.’ ‘Now that’s just not true is it,’ he chuckled, ‘especially not in that skirt.’ ‘Oh yeah?’ she said to which Roger nodded biting his lip the two shared a smile before he reached forward and grabbed a makeup wipe off of the table. He swiped his lips quickly before moving in on the cake foundation. He didn’t need it but so he wouldn’t look washed out under the bright lights the makeup artist had slapped it on, and it was thick. After a few hard scrubs, Roger huffed, ‘why isn’t this shit coming off? It’s like house paint. How do you wear this shit?’ ‘It’s thicker stuff than I wear, you’re gonna rub your bloody skin off carrying on like that,’ she said rolling her eyes, ‘give it ‘ere.’

She climbed down off of the desk and moved to stand in front of him, parting his legs so she could stand between them. Taking the cloth out of his hands she bent down slightly and pushed his hair out of his eyes and traced his forehead erasing the thick layer of foundation. She wiped his entire face around getting every morsel before she went to take off his eye makeup. He closed his eyes as she rubbed delicately before he murmured, ‘You know when you lean over like that I can see right down your shirt.’ ‘Rog,’ she scolded making him smirk. She finished up and placed the wipe in the bin behind her. When she turned back around Roger pulled her towards him by her hips dragging her towards where he stood, pressing her against the desk. ‘Yes babe,’ he said leaning up to kiss her neck. ‘You need to get dressed we’ve gotta go.’ ‘Mmmhmm,’ he murmured. Her brain was adamant but her vision clouded as his lips peppered her neck and down to her collarbone, ‘you promised me you’d show me how naughty you used to be. You’re not going to go back on a promise are you?’

His voice was throaty and punctuated with kisses. Any fight Y/N had gone out the window at that moment. Roger’s fingers trailed her waist as he made his way back to her lips. Her hands went up and ran through his hair before moving to his shirt. ‘Well,’ she mumbled, ‘I was always getting in trouble for having my tie off, it was so… restricting.’ Her hands fumbled for the tie and pulled it gently allowing it to release from its knot before her delicate fingers traversed down his torso undoing each button on the starch white shirt. ‘And I always had my shirt buttoned unreasonably low.’ ‘Yeah?,’ he asked before adding with a smirk, ‘like you do to tease me when I’m recording and you think I don’t know.’ ‘Exactly,’ she said shucking the shirt off his delicate shoulders before her hands traced the waistband of the folded upskirt, ‘and this is much too long. I’d have had it much shorter than this.’ ‘Oh yeah?’ ‘Yeah,’ she said reaching down to trace light circles along his thigh until she was just below his groin then she leaned up and whispered, ‘I’d have it about here… so I could tease all the boys.’ ‘Fuckin’ ell,’ he groaned, ‘bet you were a right little cock tease weren’t you.’ ‘Don’t know what you mean,’ she said with a coy smile as her fingers traced his hard member through the tights causing him to have a sharp intake of breath. ‘Fuck Y/N,’ he said grabbing her behind the knees and pulling her to the edge of the table so she was smack bang against his body. She could feel his cock rubbing against her thigh and it gave her butterflies in her stomach. His hand reached down under her skirt and up to her wet folds tracing her clit gently as his mouth nipped and sucked her collarbone. ‘Rog,’ she panted, ‘no time for foreplay.’

Roger nodded as he grappled to move clothes out of the way. Pulling his skirt back he forced the tights and his underwear down to his knees before moving to Y/N. With one swift motion, he pulled her underwear out of the way and inserted himself into her with a groan. She was hot and wet around him and at that moment nothing else mattered. They caught each other’s gaze for a moment and smiled before he started to move. He worked in rhythm, both chasing that high before they had to leave for their appointment. Her nails traced the muscles of his back as he rocked against her his head resting in the crook of her shoulder his breath warm against her sweaty skin. Her hair was askew and her blouse undone but it was only a five-minute job to get back to normal. Roger watched her with a smile as came up behind her and pressed a kiss to the nape of her neck. Before either one of them could say anything the door burst open and the boys came in. ‘Yeah well…Oh, you guys still here?’ Brian asked looking at them both curiously. ‘Yeah mate,’ Roger said clearing his throat, ‘we’ll be going soon.’ ‘Oh, well we’re done now anyway. Fred’s still going.’ ‘Yeah, your presence wasn’t needed after all,’ John joked before saying with a knowing eye, 'looks like you’ve been busy enough.’ Y/N blushed deep scarlet and turned away making herself busy and trying not to catch the boy's eyes as if she were a naughty schoolgirl caught by her teachers. Roger shrugged and gave them all a wink which forced them to roll their eyes, ‘what can I say? Rogerina is quite the Casanova.’

Outside GOP groups spent millions to keep a House seat that had been in GOP hands for over three decades, winning by such a slim margin that news outlets wouldn’t call the race even as President Donald Trump was bragging about it on Twitter.

Some conservative groups were using the tightness of the race as a warning sign for the November midterms.

“While we won tonight, this remains a very tough political environment and moving forward, we cannot expect to win tough races when our candidate is being outraised,” said Corry Bliss, executive director of the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC that is working to keep the Republican majority in the House. “Any Republican running for Congress getting vastly outraised by an opponent needs to start raising more money.”

Even though Republicans were the ones declaring victory Democrats seemed just as gleeful, if not more, especially since the two candidates will face off again in November.

“That this race is too close to call speaks volumes about Danny O’Connor’s strength and Republicans’ expensive, failed playbook. With twice as many registered Republicans as Democrats, this district should have been a slam dunk for the GOP, and the fact that we are still counting ballots is an ominous sign for their prospects in November,” DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján said in a statement. I have never been more confident that we will take back the House and elect an incredible group of Democrats in November.”

Unlike the last special election in Pennsylvania, where the Democratic candidate Conor Lamb outraised Rick Saccone 3 to 1, Balderson was better suited to take on O’Connor financially, although he was still operating at a deficit. He had raised a little over $1.2 million by July 18, according to public records with the federal election commission, and had spent a little over $1 million. O’Connor had raised nearly $1.5 million and had spent $1.35 million, but had vastly outspent Balderson when it came to television advertising.

According to data obtained by TIME, Baldorson had only spent $507,206 on television ads as of August 3, while O’Connor had spent over $2 million.

But, as was the case in Pennsylvania, outside spending by Republican groups dwarfed the Democrats. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC aligned with retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan, spent $3 million, including $2.7 million on television ads, and has had staffers on the ground there since June. The Republican National Committee spent $650,000 and manned over 700 volunteers in get out the vote efforts. In the two and a half weeks since Trump endorsed Balderson, America First Action, a Super PAC that advocates for his legislative agenda, spent $200,000 investing in voter turnout.

In June, a Monmouth University poll showed Balderson ahead by 10 points. But another Monmouth poll released last week showed O’Connor was only 1 percentage point behind his Republican counterpart in two of the three voter turnout models. “Too close for the GOP’s comfort,” Dan Eberhart, a Republican donor, wrote to TIME in the hours leading up to the race.

Republican strategists also conceded the race was tougher than initially envisioned.

“It’s closer than originally thought, but it’s a challenging midterm environment,” said one national Republican strategist involved in the race. “It shouldn’t come as a surprise when races are challenging.”

Some Democrats, however, definitely didn’t expect this; outside groups definitely invested, but not to the same extent. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $630,000 on television ads. And three outside Democratic groups, House Majority PAC, Priorities USA, and For Our Future, launched a $140,000 investment in digital and field campaigns in late July. But these numbers look like chump change compared to some of their Republican counterparts.

This gap intensified as the race got tighter. In the past week alone, the RNC, CLF, America First Action, and the National Republican Congressional Committee, America First Action spent over $885,000 bolstering Balderson through get out the vote efforts and digital advertising, according to FEC records; within that time frame, outside Democratic groups supporting O’Connor did even half of that.

It’s not like Republicans don’t have the money to spend. CLF raised $51 million in the second quarter of 2018, bolstered by a $30 million donation from GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, and had $71 million cash on hand as of last month. The group has already reserved $60 million in advertising for the fall elections.

But at this point, Democrats only need 23 seats to regain the majority in the house. With at least 30 seats currently held by Republicans being classified as toss-ups, those outside Republican groups may need all that money and more.
