takes place in season 3 !! reader is the cute girl that works at taco bell- while he was the cute guy that works at scoops ahoy! you both have a lot of chemistry. like lingering touches. longer gazes. all that !! you’ve been giving steve a lot of signs that you like him but sigh..he still has googoo eyes for nancy. and once again. my readers brown 🤭basically a mix of brown and brown 🤭(srry i love having poc readers 💪🏾)

all your coworkers knew you had the hots for steve harrington. they honestly didn’t expect you to like him since you didn’t seem like the type of girl to go for guys like him. they always questioned why though.

“he’s like a total idiot! why do you even like him?”

“he’s like a mix of dumb and handsome..the whole package, y’know?” you smile at your coworker as you fix your hair.

“no i mean like ! there are waaay better guys ! why even him?”

you glared are them for a moment and just roll your eyes.

“because these ‘better’ guys aren’t even that great. they’re just frat boys that wanna fuck? helloo???”

they sigh and just play with the bell by the register, still confused on what makes him so special.

to you, personally, what makes steve harrington so special is the way he is. the way he moves. the way he talks. everything about him. everything about his is everything you could ask for.

robin exclaimed as she was looking at the score board. she was shocked that steve finally had a point, and a lil upset about it.

“i mean it’s just no shot. she has to be playing with you steve, because there is like - no way that a girl likes you for just being- you!!”

steve was nodding to himself and resting a hand under his chin, feeling like the most intelligent man in the world.

“i know right ! i don’t have to be a total dick for her to like me, she just like.. likes me!”

“hm, must be nice- oh and look who’s here.”

robin points out and steve slowly looks in her direction and sees you coming towards scoops ahoy. you must’ve just got off your shift. your tote bag rests on your shoulder as your work clothes are peaking from inside of them. your eye shadow was a little faded from sweating. but you still looked pretty.

“don’t wave ..don’t wave..”

robin warns him to not wave and look like a total dumb ass, but he does so anyway. he gives you a silly smile and does a lil wave while his other hand rests on the counter.

you give him a smile and that just shoots him right in his dumb heart. “hey guys, has it been busy?”

“yeah yeah super busy..” steve says he can’t stop looking at you.

“um.. kind of, it’s been okay. a mix of both.” robins finishes and nudges steve with her foot, drawing him away from your charm.

“oh yeah- but uh, you just finished?”

“mhm, i actually was supposed to finish around 4 but they let me go at 2.”

“wow, must be nice, wish we were in your position, right steve?”

“mhm yeah definitely.”

you giggle at him and just lightly tap your nails on the counter, thinking of what to get.

“can i get ah—“

“—oreo ice cream in a cone? you got it.”

“wow, i didn’t even finish. can’t believe you remembered.”

“holy shit i can’t believe you remembered.”

robin was completely stunned by how straight this situation was and it made her honestly gag. but she was happy for the man steve. he deserved it.

but there was always that small lingering voice in steve’s mind as he scooped your ice cream. a voice he never really much liked. a voice that would constantly say. ‘why are you worrying about her, did you forget nancy?’ ‘nancy still wants you steve.’ ‘her and jonathan are failing. it’s time you stepped in and be the man she needs.’ all these voices kept him up at night or when he was usually alone in his mind. but he tried not to overthink.

he gives you your ice cream. your hands touching for longer then 5 seconds. he really just wanted to ‘make sure’ it was held tightly in your hands.

“and here you go, hope you enjoyed this scoops ahoy adventure.”

“thanks steve, oh and how much is it again-“

“- don’t worry it’s on the house.”

“aw stevie.. thank you. well i guess i’ll see you guys around, hm?”

they both said bye as they watch you leave and he watches you go, watching you leave like a sad puppy. robin could only shake her head.

“you should totally ask her out on a date, steve.”

“what- really ? i mean i’ve been thinking about it but i don’t wanna seem weird like. we’re just friends, you know ?”

“oh steve…” robin just gave steve a worried look, she couldn’t believe what he said and just rested a hand on his shoulder. looking concerned.

“steve steve steve! i see the way you look at her. and you have it bad my friend !”

steve has to think really hard. but then finally realizes what robin says. “you’re right robin. i should ask her out right now.”

he was about to book it out of there until she grabs him by the back of his collar, stopping him in place. he just looks back with confusion.

“not right now mister. you wait for the right time.”

“but what if it is the right time..”

“no. it’s not. look i’m just saving you from embarrassment alright?”

steve can only pout as he rests his arms on the cold ice cream case with his head resting on it.

you and steve were both closing and decided to catch a bite. both of you were sitting at a bench near the water fountain, stuffing your faces to some delicious burger king. steve watches as you take a onion ring to his mouth and notices the way you smile at the taste.

“holy shit, i haven’t eaten all day. thanks for buying my food, stevie.”

steve noticed the nickname you called him and played it cool as if he didn’t notice.

“pft, yeah sure ! what’re friends for?”

“but for real, i really do appreciate it.”

the way your dewy brown skin looked in colorful neon lights made his heart throb at the sight of you.

“hey are you like, free next weekend?” you begin to ask him and his attention returns back to you. even though they were already on you, he was more focused on what you were saying now.

“next week? yeah i should be.”

“well, did you wanna like. catch a movie together ?”

steve was a lil butt hurt that he wasn’t the first one to ask, you had beat him to the punch. but he was more happy that you wanted the same way too.

“yeah! um does 8:00 sound good?”

“mhm, sounds great.”

“it’s a date then.”

this was you and steve’s first time hanging out outside of work, or outside of just daily work attire everyday. this was your first time actually hanging out. and you were more excited then you should be.

you got all pretty and wore matching colors. the colors had matched your make up and clothes. a literal look. steve on the other hand was dressed nicely but casual, he still looked mighty fine with that shirt and collared jacket combo.

“and then two tickets for uh..”

“nightmare on elm street.” you finished and he looks back at you stunned for being the type to enjoy horror movies.

“alright, two tickets for nightmare on elm street.” the person behind the glass asked. which you both reply with a “yes” at the same time.

you guys were getting all set for the movies, with your candy and popcorn and drinks in hand as you made your way to catch your film. steve opens the door for you and let’s you walk in first which you shoot him a smile as you walk in first, he follows behind as you find seats that was perfect for the both of you.

as you both got comfy, steve was eating his popcorn while you were waiting for the movie to begin after all the commercials.

“say, i didn’t take you to be the type to enjoy scary movies. you don’t get scared?”

“no, why do you?”

“what?? no.. steve harrington? he could never.”

“alright then. but if you need someone to hold your hand like a little kid, i’ll be right here.”

during that entire movie. both of you were actually a little scared. constantly holding one another when something scary would pop up. he drove you home since you told him you actually walked here and he insisted on taking you home instead of having you walk him, especially at night, and maybe because of the movie you both watched.

“i mean like, the plot twist wasn’t expected but- it was just expected you know?”

“yeah, you got that right. the amount of blood was just horrible.”

“right. hey, i had a really good time today. thanks a lot steve.”

“i had fun too, so thank you for that. you were the one to ask me.”

it was a pleasant conversation through the entire car ride. his car pulls up to your home, and this is just his first seeing your house. he puts the car into parking on the drive way and opens his door, telling you to wait. he comes running back to your side and opens your door and you just smile and shake your head.

“how charming of you.”

“i do the best i can, y/n.”

he shuts the door close after you leave and walks you to your front door and you both stand there, not really sure what to say next.

“i really did have a lot of fun today, y/n. we should like, do it again?”

“yeah, we should. maybe we could get dinner some time? like doesn’t have to be fancy rich but like, a tiny bit fancy.”

“for sure! well, i’ll see you on our next date.” he was about to leave before you stop him.

“wait- can i.. can i hug you?” you ask him and he slowly turns at that. you wanted to hug him? steve was offered a hug after a long while of being touch starved? hell yes.

“sure! bring it in.” he gives you a bear hug. your arms wrapping around his neck as you have to stand on your tiptoes. his arms felt so nice around you, a little too nice then you expected. the hug was nice. it felt good for the both of you, but it sadly needed to come to an end when the light of your front door turned on, that being a sign for you to hurry up.

“well, um.. you have a goodnight, y/n.”

steve let’s go of your, resting a hand on his hip as he has a hand on the back of his head, leaning against the wall next to your door.

“yeah, you too!”

he watches you for a moment, your face changing from bashful to focused. and then that’s when you make the move. you give him kiss on his cheek. and it takes him a while for it to register and he just stands there like a deer in headlights.

“have a goodnight steve!”

you say happily before opening your door and closing it lightly. from behind the door, you fell to the ground as you held a smile on your face. your hand was resting on your heart and you couldn’t believe how bad you had it for him.

“my heart is beating so fast..” you say softly to yourself as you try to catch your breath. but everything was moving so fast as you sit on the ground.

steve stood outside your door for a solid 3 minutes before finally gaining consciousness. he was beat red and couldn’t stop thinking about the sly move you made. he just had to pray to god that he would be able to be cool with you for the rest of the week.

your guys’ dinner date finally came around. you made reservations on call and told steve about them. he told you he would’ve been coming a little late, around 5 minutes later but you were totally fine with it.

you got all dolled up for him as you sit nicely and look around the restaurant seeing everyone with their lovely dates. you felt a little left out but didn’t think too much about it.

5 minutes turned to 10. 10 minutes turned to 30 minutes. 30 turned into 1 hour. you began to grow impatient. the waiter kept coming back to check in on if you were ready and you had nicely asked if he could get you the check.

“here’s your check. hey, i’m sorry to hear about your shit of a date on showing up. he had no reason to stood up someone as pretty as you. you seem fun to be around.”

the cute waiter tried to calm you down with sweet words, it didn’t help much but you appreciated his efforts.

“thank you though, i appreciate it.” you say before getting up and going.

the moment you see steve tomorrow at work was the day he would remember.

you were more then hurt. you were heart broken. disappointed by him for what he did. didn’t he like you? you thought he did. unless something changed. what changed ?

(meanwhile…)

steve was getting ready but his mind started to drift to memories. memories of nancy. where he used to love her. but now that he has found someone new that loves him. he’s not sure of himself. should he still hold onto an old flame?or move onto someone new. he doesn’t know if he misses nancy. or if he misses the feeling of being inlove.

he liked you a lot. but he wasn’t sure if he loves you. maybe he does. all these thoughts kept nagging up. they’ve been nagging him since they moment he’s met you.

the next day was horrible. steve didn’t get any sleep. the loud overbearing thoughts couldn’t shut up as he rest. also due to the fact that he literally stood you up. that’s nothing like him.

he saw you walk past scoops ahoy and wanted to talk to you. he needed to talk to you. but you probably hated him. hated everything he did and everything that he was. you couldn’t blame him. he was stupid. stupid to hold those intrusive thoughts instead of telling you. he didn’t just hurt himself. he hurt you too.

“okay steve. you are acting really weird. what happened on your guys’ date ?”

“i chickened out on our date.”

“what the hell? you idiot steve! you are the definition of dingus. why didn’t you go?”

“because i couldn’t stop thinking about nancy, but i don’t want nancy. because i want y/n, but i just- shit. i can’t think.”

he couldn’t take it and threw his hands on his head in distress and his head was resting on the counter of the cash register. luckily it was empty so steve was able to have a break down. robin rubs his back in reassurance. trying her best to be their for her friend.

“i’m not interrupting anything am i ?”

oh no. oh no no no no. you were here. infront of him. seeing him at this moment. seeing him weak infront of you. he wanted to curl up in a ball and die. you probably wanted him dead.

“y/n!! didn’t see you there! how’s it hanging?”

steve instantly “lit” up at the sight of you, trying not to seem awkward.

“hi steve. hi robbie.”

“hellooo” robin says as she gives steve a pat on the back and whispers to him. “good luck.. you’re gonna need it.”

she left him. all alone. facing only you.

“steve.”

he couldn’t do anything, he was so worried about what you might say to him, what you might even think of him.

“steve.”

you probably are heartbroken now because of him. you’ll never be the same again.

“steve !”

your voice brought him away from his thoughts.

“hey, are you okay? if it’s about like you chickening out, it’s fine. you probably have bigger things going on.”

“what? no no ! it’s not that it’s just- yeah it’s actually that.”

“well.. what is it.” he sighed to himself as he grabs your hand and brings you to a booth in the corner he sits next to you and lets out a long sigh.

“i don’t know if i still like nancy, but i like you, and i want to be with you. but nancy was super shitty to me, and i know you’ll treat me right but i’m just afraid of making the same mistake again.”
