Ok so sorry this is so long but it was literally insane. So this girl in my dorm has a rabbit right. It’s an illegal rabbit (not a registered ESA) her friends stage an intervention to be like girl you cannot be keeping a rabbit in your tiny dorm. She keeps the rabbit anyway

Midway through the semesters we start getting emails like once a week from our RA about a rabbit loose in the hallways asking whoever owns it to come collect their rabbit (very generous response from our RA considering that a. rabbits are not allowed as ESAs here b. everyone and their mom fucking knows who’s rabbit it is)

Suddenly this girl starts very publicly owning a kitten (practically neonatal) (definitely not old enough to be vaccinated). She lets the kitten loose in our communal bathroom, she brings it to the dining hall, she brings it to class, posts about it on social media (side note she’s decently tiktok famous so everyone sees her business)

Enough people start being concerned about the health of the kitten and also the fact that she’s keeping a rabbit and a tiny kitten in the same room that someone must have snitched. She gets word and starts attempting to get someone to take the rabbit*

I’m sitting at my job when I get an email from our housing authority informing me campus safety has found an abandoned domestic rabbit outside IN THE FREEZING RAIN in a cardboard box. WITH MY NAME ON IT. HUH???

Im so fucking freaked out i think I’m gonna lose my housing over someone else’s fucking illegal pet. I rush to explain its not mine, our RA Can point them to who actually owns it. They’re like chill, that backs up what we already know. I’m in the clear (never found out why she had a box with my name on it or why she used it)

Campus safety and housing goes to her room to ask her about the rabbit, my ex-roommate is in the hallway at the time and snoops. The girl dodges most of the questions about the rabbit. The questions quickly turn to the kitten, who is actively in her room SCREAMING. She claims she thought the kitten was an ESA.

Girl. Be real you’ve had the thing for like a week and it has no paperwork. Campus safety says due to her history with the rabbit they’re gonna have to take the kitten for its own safety. She throws a fit (side note she also had an illegal snake our first year that got loose at some point and was never found again so the kitten is actually her 3rd instance of irresponsible pet ownership not the second)

She goes on social media and tells her considerable following the college has taken her ESA because she is autistic and they are ableist and say her disability means she can’t take care of animals. She claims she’s “never been away from him for this long” (again. Girl you’ve had it for a week) she starts attempting to fundraise for legal fees to sue the college for discrimination. She does not mention the rabbit in her tiktoks

Fall break comes so she leaves campus and during break fucking posts a picture of her with A SECOND KITTEN asking people what she should name it. We immediately send this to the housing authority. I never learned what happened with the second kitten

*back to the trying to find a new owner for the rabbit. I later find out from a coworker that one of her friends had agreed to take the rabbit cuz she lives off campus on the condition that she couldn’t take it until after break bc she was going home and the rabbit wouldn’t have any supervision during that time. So if she had quietly held on to the rabbit for like a week longer, it would have been happily rehomed but NO she decides it’s easier to just dump a helpless starving animal in 40 degree thunderstorms.

Anyway I think she got told she has to leave campus permanently at the end of the semester and as far as I know she’s still scamming her followers for bs “legal fees” hope this entertained you

Stanley had missed her a lot. Y/N's work trip to Europe had dragged much too long for his liking. He was so ready to see her again and wrap her between the white bed sheets, along with his love and his lust and affection.

He had waited for her at the airport and greeted her with flowers, the romantic. She had nothing against it, in fact, Y/N loves cliché things such as flowers and chocolates in heart-shaped boxes and rose petals and candles… She embraced him tightly, and he spun her like a ballerina in his arms. Her face was covered with his tender, quick kisses and she had smiled, blushing as deep a red color as the roses he brought her.

Sitting in their car, Stanley was craving the feeling, the touch of her so bad, he'd gladly let her sit in his lap. But that would be against many rules of driving and steering the wheel. Screw rules, right? No, Y/N wouldn't have allowed it.

So Stan settled for his hand on her thigh for the car ride. She told him about her work trip to Europe, told him how romantic it'd be to go to Paris together, walk the streets of Venice, visit Vienna's opera house. Stanley listened and even put her words in the back of his mind as notes for later anniversary, Christmas and birthday gifts.

But Y/N noticed his hand was making bold moves on her thigh. His hold was different from his previous ones, firstly, much more grabbing. She could feel it in only the tip of his fingers, his intentions and thoughts. How the digits were pressing deeper in her skin than usual. God, the things he would do to her now and the following hours and nights and days… He's got too many thoughts and options to choose from.

His wife senses his fastidious expression and grins. She knows all about what's going on his mind. Y/N slides closer to him and starts lifting his shirt off of him. Time seems to have stopped, they're in no rush. Stanley's feelings, of course, stay as intense and blood-rushing as they were the whole car ride, and all the time he waited for her at home.

Y/N puts her arms around Stanley's shoulders and tilts her head slightly. There's a soft smile itching he corners of her lips while she looks at Stanley. She's finally home, and she's so glad to be. Y/N runs her hand slowly through Stanley's curls and touches his scalp on the way. Stanley smiles. He's missed this small gesture from her, he realises.

“Mind if I show you how much I've missed you now?” Stanley questions and his hand takes Y/N's waist in almost a possessive manner. She chuckles and nods, agreeing. “You were asking for it.” He points out.

Y/N pokes his shoulder. “Shut up and make love to me, you fool.” She commands and lets go of him, dropping back down on their bed. She lays there for a second, waiting for Stanley to join her.

“I promise to.” He says, and it's all quick and hurried and lustful and everything both of them want from that second on. Quick and grabby hands, bedsheets ruffling, hair getting in the way, pairs of underwear thrown in the air. All hurried and fast, as if they were losing time. But they had all the time they could wish for, and Stanley was sure to use every second of it.

He smothers her with kisses from her lips down to her knees. Each one makes her shiver, her whimpers like music to the man's ears. His curls tickle her skin and his lips crush against her. Y/N can't wait anymore.

She takes a hold of Stanley's face and brings it back up to face hers, and she gives him a tight kiss. He can feel her impatience and knows it matches his. Stanley grins. 

The second he's gone inside of her, they both feel like seven feet in the air. Stanley's head drops in the crook of her neck and he grunts, gripping the sheet under his hand. Y/N's eyes flutter shut. This is what she's been missing, what both of them have.

He's completely absorbed in everything she gives, her love, her body, her sounds, her juices and her lust. Stanley gives his love to her with every thrust of his hips and every kiss to her neck, gives his craving and tries his best to make up for the time lost.

Y/N's hands grip the back of his neck tighter and needier with each of his thrusts, and she tries to meet his hips with her own. They're not far from release, despite the desire to make this last longer. 

No words need to be exchanged. Stanley knows Y/N's body as well as she knows his, he can feel that she's about to reach her peak. Stanley makes her look at him, tilting her face and she meets his eyes. Desperation, excitement, lust. 

Cloudy eyes meet another pair of the same sort. Y/N nods at Stanley, encouraging him to quicken his pace and meet his release with her. She runs her hand through his hair again and pulls him down to her, their lips meeting in a kiss that make their heads spin.

Grunts and moans and whimpers, ones of success and reaching release, fill the room once the couple comes undone. Almost in sync—Stanley was only a second late. 

He moved them both closer to the headboards, where the heavenly bed of pillows lay, and wrapped his arms around his wife. They had to catch their breaths. Y/N had never had love as intense as this made to her before. She found Stanley's hand with her own and interlocked their fingers.

Y/N looks at Stanley from below, her head resting on his bicep, and he smiles down at her. He presses a kiss to her forehead and Y/N giggles, pulling herself closer into her husband's embrace.

“Hope you've got more in ya'.” Stanley says to her and Y/N raises her head in question. Stanley winks. 

“You mad man.” She tells him. Stanley laughs.

“A mad man in love.”

lmao I feel this. since elu got a pet (if only for a few hours and I’m still so bothered by that), let’s talk about Robbe and Sander getting a pet!

A few months after Robbe and Sander move in together once Robbe starts University, they decide to get a puppy. It’s mostly Robbe’s idea bc he’s always wanted one but was never allowed to have one bc his papa thought it would be “too much stress on the family.” Robbe and Sander take a few trips to some local animal shelters, revisiting them each a couple of times to try to find the perfect dog for their family. Robbe ends up getting attached to quite a few of them, but Sander hasn’t really connected with any of them yet, and Robbe can tell. He knows all he has to do is say “I want this one” and Sander will agree to whichever one he chooses, but Robbe wants Sander to be just as excited as he is.

He’s growing more and more discouraged the longer they go without adopting one, feeling like maybe Sander just doesn’t want a dog, but then they go back to one of the animal shelter’s they haven’t visited as much and find out that they’ve recently put a new puppy up for adoption. She’s the only one of the litter they were able to locate, so they’re not sure what her story is, but she’s healthy and sweet, if a little bit shy. Robbe’s excited to meet her.

When they go back to, Robbe’s instantly intrigued by her. She’s a terrier mix of some sort, but they’re not sure exactly what. She has fluffy golden fur sprinkled with black to add texture and character, and she has big, warm brown eyes. Robbe squats down in front of her enclosure, sticking his fingers through the fence that stands between them so he can touch her, if she wants. She walks over to him slowly, almost lazily, sniffing at his hand when she finally reaches him before giving him a soft, sweet lick. Then, she sits down right where she is and looks up at Sander, those big brown eyes staring up at him. Robbe looks up at him, too, and Sander, looking awestruck, murmurs, “She kind of has your eyes, Robbe.”

“What, my puppy eyes?” Robbe teases, giving Sander his best sad pleading puppy look. Sander snorts and kneels down beside Robbe, holding his own hand up to the fence. she trots over to him excitedly, sniffing much more energetically at his hand, tail wagging already. Robbe can’t even bring himself to be jealous that she already likes Sander more bc the look in Sander’s eyes silences him. He looks so vulnerable, eyes full of surprise that she’s so happy to see him, that she could like him so much without even knowing him.

He raises those raw, surprised eyes to Robbe’s and declares, “She is the one,” and Robbe’s already nodding his head with a happy grin, bc of course she is, and Robbe tilts his head adorably at Sander and responds, “Yeah, she is, isn’t she?” Sander’s lips turn up into a grin that almost rivals Robbe’s, and he turns back to their puppy, who’s still wagging her tail at him with such force that it rocks her whole body. Before they leave, they start the paperwork so that the shelter will hold her for them as they get their apartment ready for her.

In a few days, they bring her home for the first time, Sander cradling her in his arms. They’ve decided to name her Rebel, and she now wears a rainbow collar with a tag that labels her as theirs, their Rebel. They bought her a dark purple bed that’s basically an oversized pillow, though they know she’ll end up sleeping in bed with them anyway. She’s nervous when they first set her down in her new home, following Sander around at his heels, but she warms up to it pretty quickly and starts to explore, a little bundle of curiosity. They give her her first toy, a plush microphone they saw at the pet store and just had to buy, and she trots around the living room with it in her mouth, seeming proud, holding her head high.

For the first month of having her, it feels like they’re always on the internet looking up tricks for training puppies, and when they’re not on the internet looking them up, they’re trying to apply them in real world, doing their best to train her on their own. It’s going well, she responds to her name, she knows a few basic commands, but they’re struggling the most with house training her. Every time they seem to be making progress, she’ll have an accident on the kitchen floor or right next to the door or, worse yet, the carpeted floor of their bedroom. They’re both starting to grow frustrated, wondering if they’re doing something wrong or if maybe they just aren’t cut out to be pet owners. But every time they start to feel like they want to give up, she comes galloping over to one of them, tail wagging with her whole body, smothering them in kisses and gentle little nibbles, and they know there’s no way they could ever give up on her.

It’s been a few weeks since Rebel’s last accident, so they’re starting to feel like maybe they actually succeeded and she’s outgrown that phase. They’re lying in bed together one Thursday evening before going to sleep, Rebel acting more rambunctious and playful than usual at this hour as she runs back and forth between them, diving for their hands, their noses, anything she can nibble at, having more and more fun with the game the more they flinch or move their hands and faces away from her. They’re laughing at each other’s jerky movements, taking a special thrill from every time the other gets a particularly strong bite from her, goading each other with taunts like, “Come on, it doesn’t hurt that bad,” until the other is made to eat his words when she comes back and bites him. Despite the pain, they’re having just as much fun as she is.

They finally get a reprieve from her reign of terror when she goes down to the foot of the bed, sniffing around their ankles, which are tucked safely under the comforter. “I love nights like this,” Robbe says through a lazy, content smile. “Me too,” Sander answers, leaning forward to kiss Robbe through their smiles. They both let themselves get lost in the kiss until Robbe starts to feel something wet and warm against his foot, seeping through the blanket and sheet. Alarmed, he jerks away from Sander, looking towards the end of the bed, and sure enough, Rebel’s there, squatting just above his foot.

“Fuck, Sander, she’s peeing!” Robbe shouts as he grabs her around the waist and jumps out of bed, stumbling as he gets caught in the blankets. Sander rolls out of bed to the other side, landing on all fours as he scrambles to his feet. Once Robbe’s out of bed, he starts hopping around on one foot, his unsoiled foot, and he’s barking at Sander to grab the blankets off the bed before it seeps through to the mattress. Sander acts as quickly as he can, ripping the sheets and blanket from the bed and dropping them in a messy bundle on the floor, wrestling with the fitted sheet bc it’s caught on the corner of the bed farthest from where he’s standing. He yanks on it as hard as he can, and finally it gives way, forcing him to stumble backwards a few steps before falling on his butt.

He can’t help it anymore, he bursts out laughing in a loud, uncontrollable kind of way. In a hiccuping, gasping for air kind of way. Robbe, still balancing on one foot, snaps, “Sander, this isn’t funny!”

Between laughs, Sander barely manages to get out, “Robbe [gasp for breath] she peed on your foot!” Robbe looks from the innocent, nervous looking puppy in his hands, to his raised, peed-on foot, to his boyfriend, who’s a mess of hysterical laughter on the ground, and Robbe can’t help himself either. He collapses to the floor beside Sander, laughing so hard now that he can barely breathe.

“If you think it’s so funny,” Robbe gasps out, “then you can clean off my foot.” He stretches his soiled foot towards Sander, who shrieks and shoves it away, only making them both laugh harder. Robbe moves to bury his face in Sander’s chest, the both of them laughing against each other now, tangling together. Rebel’s sniffing around them nervously, not able to tell if what’s happening is a good thing or a bad thing. She starts to yip, which draws Robbe and Sander our of their giggle fit a bit, and their laughter slowly starts to trickle off.

“We need to take her out to make sure she’s finished,” Robbe says finally, panting a bit as he recovers.

“I’ll do it,” Sander says as he kisses Robbe’s cheek. “You have to go take care of your pee foot.” He shoots Robbe a teasing look that earns him a shove in return. Sander just laughs as he picks Rebel up and heads out of the room to take her out.

Robbe hops to the bathroom, where he rinses off his foot with some soap and water and dries it with one of the towels that are hanging up. He’s not sure if it’s his or Sander’s, but he gets a wicked grin at the thought of it being Sander’s. He goes back to the bedroom to gather the soiled bedding into a bag they can take to the laundromat the next morning. When Sander and Rebel come back inside, Sander helps Robbe make the bed with a fresh set of sheets and a throw blanket from the couch. They curl up together in the cool crisp feel of them, Rebel now lying peacefully between their legs like usual, bladder empty.

“I thought we were making progress,” Robbe says softly, feeling disappointed and discouraged all over again, now that he’s come off the high from all of his laughter a bit.

“We are,” Sander reassures him, placing a kiss to Robbe’s shoulder through the fabric of his t-shirt. “This was just a minor hiccup. They happen. We’ll get there, eventually. Together.” It’s the reminder of “together” that succeeds in reassuring Robbe, because when they’re together, even the lowest of lows don’t feel that low. Even getting peed on by his own dog can be funny, with Sander there beside him, laughing at the ridiculousness of the whole situation. So, as Robbe places a kiss of his own to the top of Sander’s head, he echoes Sander’s last word back to him.

“Together.”

As you stood in front of Father Blackwood's office, an unwholesome feeling grew inside of you. You were one of the most notorious witches in the school and have never had any problems, but something seemed strange.

“Come in, Y/N.” You heard him calling. He must’ve sensed you.

“Good morning, Father Blackwood.” You greeted him politely.

“Miss Y/L/N, I’ve to inform you about something I'm inconsolable for.” He started but he paid no attention to you. “Your parents tried to take you from school. Since you’re one of our most promising witches and your parents didn’t want to be diverted from their idea, I had to take certain measures.”

“Thank you but please forgive me but what’re you trying to tell me, Father Blackwood?”

He chuckled. “Your parents tried to weaken our school, so in the name of our Dark Lord, I killed them.”

You tried to breathe, but your lungs didn’t allow you to breathe. Your heart felt like it was standing still. Your body was deaf and the only thought in your head, "This is a bad joke."

“You alright?” Father Blackwood looked at you. “I did it to assure your education.”

You tried to hide your tears. “I-I.” You needed to answer or he’d kill you too. “I’m thankful. Thank you Father Blackwood, if you’d excuse me, I’ve to prepare for class.”

He smiled. “You’re excused.”

You nodded, turned slowly and closed the door behind you. When you were in safe distance, you ran out of school. You had to go home to see if your parents were dead or if it was just a bad joke.

When you got home, the door wasn’t locked as always.

“Mom!” You shouted. “Dad!” 

You ran through every room, looking for them but you couldn’t find them.

“No, no, no, no.” You started crying.

Everything felt numb and you tried to realize that Father Blackwood had actually killed your family. Apart from your parents, you had no one else. But you couldn’t focus on grieving because you heard something whimper.

“Moon.” You remembered. “Moon, where are you?”

You called and heard Moon whimpering more as you called his name. You heard him in the basement. Your basement was not an ordinary one, it was more of an underground forest. Your parents were gifted game wardens in the witch world. They saved and cared for familiar who no longer had anyone or who no one wanted to have anymore.

Your “dog” came out of the dark corner where he was hiding. Moon was not just a dog, he was your familiar and was half a werewolf.

“You survived.” You cried again because you were relived to see your friend. 

You could feel that Moon had guilty feelings because he could not protect your family.

Moon came to you and put his head on your legs. Since Moon was a half werewolf, he was quite tall, but he always behaved like a dog. He always slept with you, actually he was always near you.

“You couldn’t have done anything to stop him, he would have killed you too.” You whispered as you pet him. He whimpered because he felt you were crying.

“I’m glad, I still have you.” You looked at him and saw a letter that hung on his collar. “For Y/N, from Mom & Dad.” You read out loud.

Moon looked worried at you. But you decided not to open the letter yet.You were not ready to read the last words of your parents.

Some days passed, you didn’t talk to anyone anymore. You told the Academy that you were seriously ill and it was contagious, so you had to stay at home for a while.

You were a powerful witch, with that Father Blackwood was right. You already had a talent for spells as a child and quickly invented your own. You protected your house with spells that even mastered warlocks couldn’t use or break, so that Moon and you were safe and could think about what you would do next.

You didn’t want to go back to the academy, you were better in a lot of things than your classmates anyway, but if you didn’t go, father Blackwood would kill you as well.

You got a few text from Nick and your friends but ignored them all. Most of the time you lay in your bed staring at the wall. You feel lonely and lost, yet still so angry.

After a while you went back to school, even though Moon didn’t want to let you go alone, because his fear that you could get killed by Father Blackwood was too big...

Normally, you would have met with Nick as you did every morning in the Library, today you went straight to class. You didn’t say much which was unusual for you, since the teacher would always wait for you to answer questions, the other students couldn’t. After the Academy, Moon would be waiting for you out in the woods so you could go home together. So it went on for a while, until one day Moon wasn’t waiting for you.

You were looking for Moon but you couldn’t find him. An inner panic spread. Did father Blackwood have your familiar now? Was he dead because you no longer provided your knowloedge?

“Moon?” You looked around. “Oh please no.”

“You looking for us?” You heard a familiar voice behind you.

You turned around. “Nick?” You were surprised as you noticed Moon by his side. “Watch out!” You tried to warn him because Moon hated anyone else.

Moon was one of the Familiar nobody wanted anymore. Moon was badly treated by his former owner because he wasn’t a real dog and wasn't a real werewolf either. He didn’t really accept anyone but you.

“We took a little longer to hunt today.” He smirked.

Moon came to you and you hugged him. “I was worried about you.” You whispered and he licked your hand. “Why were you with my familiar?”

“Because he was hungry and you’re acting -” he thought about how he should describe your behavior lately. “Different. So I followed you, Moon noticed me and I was lucky he didn’t kill me.”Moon scowled at Nick to show him, that if he’d hurt you, he’d definitely kill him.

You smiled soft but remembered that Father Blackwood could find you out here. “I’m sorry Nick, I truly am but I’ve a lot on my mind now and i need to go-”

“Then tell me what’s going on, Y/N.” He responded. “I thought you wanted this whole relationship thing?”

“I did, I’m just-”

“Don’t shut me out.” Nick seemed hurt.

You realized that you were important to Nick and he missed you. But you couldn’t talk to him here, not if there could be someone behind every tree, who would listen to you.

“Meet me at my house, tonight.” You replied, then you went with Moon home.

When you arrived home, you just walked impatiently back and forth. You were in love with Nick, but didn’t you know if you could trust him. What if he was a spy for Father Blackwood? Or what if you told him what happened to your parents and he would be in danger himself?

Moon looked at you and growled. You made him nervous.

“Really? You were the one who had to be friends with him, I tried to stay away.” You said and Moon just sighed.

A few hours passed, but then Nick stood at your door. But he couldn’t enter.

“Oh, I forgot to change the spell.” You remembered and Nick looked confused. You mumbled something in Latein, then you took his hand and pulled him inside of your house. Nick seemed to be impressed, yet worried. 

You whispered something in Latein again. No one was allowed to get in or outside of the House, besides Nick, Moon and you.

“Why would you need to create a spell, to keep witches & warlocks outside?” He asked. You looked at him, trying to decide if you could tell him the truth. “Whats going on?” He came to you and took gently your hands.

You couldn’t stop yourself but started to cry. Nick wrapped his arms around you and you held him tight.

After a little moment, you went upstairs with Nick into your room.

“Y/N, you know, you can always talk to me - but if you don’t its okay too.” He spoke soft. “We can just sit on your bed, or make out.” Nick grinned and made you chuckle. “Or we watch a scary movie. I’m fine with everything as long as I can hold your hand.”

“Nick, Father Blackwood murdered my family.” You said it out loud for the first time. A tear rolled down your face but you whipped it away quickly. “He said he did it for me and the Academy.” Nick came to you and looked shocked. “I’m afraid that he’ll come for Moon, or me eventually. Also my parents wrote me a letter before they died, but I’m to scared to open it.”

“I’m so sorry, Y/N.” Nick replied heartbroken, it reminded him of how he felt when his parents died. 

You knew he could understand how you by the look he gave you.

“But he won’t do anything to you.” He assured you. “You’re already more powerful than him and if he’d ever try to hurt you, I’d kill him in a second.” Nick sounded serious.

You looked at Nicholas and saw how angry he was that you had to be afraid of anything. He wanted to make you feel safe. You gently took his face in your hands and kissed him. He wrapped his arms around you and pulled you close to him.

As someone opened the door, you stopped with what you were about to do. You were terrified because no one but Nick and you were in the house. But it was Moon. He didn’t want to be alone downstairs, you and Nick had to laugh.

“But I still wonder why you came along with him. Moon hates anyone but me.” You chuckled.

Moon came to Nick and he pet him. “I’ve a familiar who’s a Werewolf too. Her name is Amalia.” He smiled as he thought about her. “Maybe he sensed that he can trust me.” You smiled as you saw that Moon accepted Nick. “Why didn’t you open the letter?”

“Because its the last thing, I’ve of them” You replied and stood up to show him the letter. “Would you read it to me?”

Nick was honored and agreed to read it. He opened the letter while you lay in his arms.

“To our dearest daughter, Y/N.” He began. “If you’re reading this, it means were no longer with you and we’re truly sorry for it. We wanted you out of the Academy because we think Faustus is planning something against the Dark Lord. You’re one of a kind, maybe the most powerful witch and we didn’t want you to be a part of his plans.” You started crying. “We might have failed but we did everything to assure that nothing will ever happen to you, you’re under the protection of our dark lord now. Moon will keep you safe, be sure who to trust. We love you.” Nick put the letter aside and held you in his arms. 

You missed your parents but were a bit confused about the meaning of the letter. Still grateful for having him. 

Nick felt that you were relieved to have finally opened the letter and that you were very sad. He held you tightly in his arms all night, to show you that he wouldn’t leave you alone and protect you, especially against Father Blackwood.

You knew your Spell to protect the House was safe. But having Nick in the house and being held by him made you feel more safe than any spell ever could.

You knew Nick already felt asleep but you couldn’t help yourself as you looked at him, while Moon was laying behind him. It touched your heart that Moon accepted Nick so much. “I love you, Scratch.” You spoke soft.

i’m really sorry that i keep hammering on about this but some days im ok and i thought im getting over it but sometimes like today it all comes in waves and i’m overwhelmed with sadness and cry about it again and i dont know where else to turn because i dont really have friends and my family expected me to be over it.

i used to have a friend who is still working there (lets call her C). we bonded bcs we’re from the same country, on the same visa, and the same age, although she’s been working there longer than i have. our visas expire around the same time, and we both had spent a lot of time together worried about what to do about it (we wanted permanent residency, but it’s not easy) so we talked about maybe going to regional australia and study something else, maybe we’ll just return home, and we can live together. we bonded over how we were not getting paid, our toxic employers, etc.

C came to australia as a student, on her own, and started working at this restaurant years ago, when it once was a small takeaway shop, before it reopened in a bigger place - thats when i joined the team. in some way, the original boss had acted as a sort of maternal figure to C, who is obviously far away from her family, and she is also epileptic. so the boss had done things like fetch her to and from the airport, the clinic, advice for living in the country, etc. and somehow, in this employer’s twisted mind, she thinks it is then ok to treat C like free help for her shop rather than an employee because she had done all this for her. so instead of paying C properly, as well as paying her super and everything else an employer should do, she finds it ok to abuse C by paying her whenever she likes, screaming at her for not answering her phone, overworking her, etc.

and C has on numerous occasions complained to me about the abuse she went through. she clearly doesnt like the boss, as on numerous occasions she had brought up the idea of reporting the business, she complains about the work, not being paid and the difficulty it had caused her and flat out said doesnt like the working conditions. BUT. if u were to ask her about the NICE things the boss has done for her, she changes her tone. she boasts about the GOOD things the boss has done for her like the flowers for her birthday - the pictures of her holding the bouquet is her profile pic everywhere, and how the boss takes care of her during an epilepsy episode - (and then put her to work the next night.)  i’ve always thought it was weird , but never questioned her more about it. soon after the fallout with the two bosses, i was on the phone with her. i was crying bc i was distressed about the change, and she said: “we are the children, and they are the adults. if the business fails, it fails. let them deal with it. we’ll just carry on our work."

we were talking everyday after that just before i realised i had gotten fired. our last conversation was in february, on the phone, when we were talking about hanging out after work. and suddenly, everything dropped. i realised i had been let go from work, and suspect that the boss had told C not to talk to me anymore. i know C had extended her visa by changing to a student visa, to study cooking, because the boss said she would sponsor her if she did that. she went to study with borrowed money from her family (since she isnt getting paid nearly enough to even pay her rent smh) which is something she told me she didnt want to do. like i dont understand that at all.

what a shit show huh.

now C is not returning my messages. in fact i saw her at the shopping mall just last week. my first instinct was to go up and speak to her, until she spotted me, stopped in her tracks, and went the other direction. i truly did not expect her to be the one to turn her back on me, after everything we’ve been through.

my visa is supposed to expire next month, but after the lockdown my family and i decided that it is the best decision to stay put in australia for the time being. so i applied for a visitor’s visa for a year. the form asked for proof that i had stopped working, in the form of payslips or contract, both of which i dont have, obviously. but i submitted it anyway so now im still waiting on my application.

it just baffles me how one bad employment and two incompetent bosses had fucked up my life this bad. i cant apply for anymore work in australia, so i have no income, the only other person who understood my situation is now gone, now im just waiting until its safe to leave the country. sitting at home, doing nothing but mulling over how i had lost my job, lost my best friend, lost the opportunity to do my masters, and leave the country i had lived in for this long.

im trying not to think about it anymore but its like half a year later and its still causing me grief but nobody knows or gets it.

anyway. sorry that this is long winded i just need to vent. you’re amazing tash, if only i could borrow your residency while you’re in the uk.

hey again <3 yeah getting permanent residency in australia is a nightmare, australia’s government is mostly anti-immigration which makes me sad. 

I can honestly understand why you’re still thinking about this and being negatively impacted by it all, the job gave you hope of completing your masters and staying longer in the country? and hope is a very powerful emotion! to then have it all taken away in such a brutal and unfair and cruel way...well that would affect anyone pretty badly. add in the fact that the ending of the job has created a lot of other negative situations and distress? it makes a lot of sense about why you’re still upset over this. 

this business needs to be reported, honestly what they’re doing is cruel and illegal. it’s quite clear that they are using the promise of sponsoring study as a way to manipulate vulnerable people into underpaid work, it’s also now very clear that they have no intention of following through on that promise -- it’s now become a pattern of behaviour if they did it with C as well as you. they shouldn’t be allowed to continue to operate and to profit off the backs of immigrants and illegal wages. you’re the one who’s suffered, it’s up to you whether you do want to do this? but I would think a lot about it -- I know you mentioned that your parents are close with the owners, but this isn’t ok.

I think all you can do now is put this behind you, accept the reality of the situation and try to be as kind to yourself as you can. spend time looking after yourself, practising self care, prioritising you and your well-being. maybe that means daily exercise and walks, or creating art (clay, painting, drawing?), or spending time gardening, or practising yoga / meditation, whatever works for you. as long as it’s calming and relaxing for you, and you find some measure of peace? then that’s what matters. 

know that what happened to you wasn’t right, it wasn’t your fault at all. you were exploited and taken advantage of, and you didn’t deserve that. try to keep yourself busy as best as you can, take it one day at a time. make a conscious decision to work on letting this go and looking forward, see how things go. I think right now is the hardest bit, because you’re kinda stuck in limbo and there’s lockdown / social distancing measures to deal with too? but once you get moving again and things change, it may have a more positive impact on your mental health when you’re being kept busy again and you have a change of environment.

Guido Mista!

You met by chance during one of his missions. You just so happened to almost make him miss his shot, if it were not because he’d pushed you to the side to avoid hurting you, that is. Let it be known, you were majorly pissed at first, and were about to yell at him every single insult you could think up. Then, noticing the gun in his hand and the fallen man on the far end of the street, you froze up. You really, really shouldn’t have come to this side of Naples this late in the afternoon.

When he’s done his job, he quickly turns to you, raising an eyebrow at how instead of running away in a panic, you’d just sat there on the ground, looking at him with a mix between anger and fear in your eyes. He caught on the situation, and immediately felt bad. He stepped closer to you, and you could feel nothing but your legs freeze, not allowing you to move. Was he going to kill you? What were you going to do now??

Surprisingly enough, he extended his hand towards you with the most handsome smile (well, you weren’t quite sure if it was the smile or his face overall) you’d ever seen and, carefully, extended yours to grab his, surprised by it’s warmth. Right now, you were truly thankful you’d taken your pills that day, otherwise you’d be grasping for air and curled in a ball right now. 

“Are you okay? You don’t look so good, maybe in shock?” You didn’t answer, maybe you were in shock, and Mista wasn’t happy with that, he got worried, helping you up carefully and holding you up by placing an arm around your shoulder so you wouldn’t plummet to the ground. “Listen, it’s late and I doubt there’s any place I can step in open right now, it’s a local holiday today, you know?” He commented, seemingly trying to balance his options while helping you walk alongside him.

“Fine.” You muttered, feeling your lungs work properly once again, your legs starting to keep up the pace by themselves again, yet there was a weird feeling of pressure in your chest and a weird, uncomfortable lightheaded sensation settling in your head. Maybe you were in fact in shock. You felt like screaming, but the pressure in your chest kept you from it. After all, you’d just seen someone get shot. And his oddly friendly and caring killer was helping you walk as you thought this.

“Listen.” He started, looking forward to make sure you didn’t trip with anything on your way. “It’s my job, I’m not just shooting people for fun, I want you to know that you’re not in any type of danger with me.” He continued, stealing a side glance to you, who seemed very focused on your walking and the pavement. He sighed at your silence. “I’m Guido Mista, you can just call me Mista though, if you want t- HEY!” The pressure in your chest increased, and you felt your body-weight plummet to the ground below your legs, you’d fainted. 

When you woke up, you scanned your surroundings, slowly but carefully trying to make out where you were. This was unfamiliar; a fancy, quite rustic living room laid before your eyes. You let out a quiet grunt when you tried to sit up, feeling your head spin and holding it with your hand. Slight rustling and a thud were the first things you heard in that deafening silence, turning your groggy gaze to the source only to find yourself with a cute, round tiger striped ass pointing your direction. It’s owner had tumbled over from the sofa before it, probably. But, you’d seen those pants before, had you not?

When the figure rose from the ground, you felt your breath hitch in your throat. It was the man from before. How was he there? Most importantly, where were you even?!

“Good morning, miss. It’s me, Mista, from last night.” He started, squatting before you so you’d meet his gaze, deep and sincere. He didn’t seem like a bad person, it was just that, last night... He started speaking again when he noticed your gaze falter from his face down onto the ground with a preoccupied frown. “I brought you here, you fainted on me and I didn’t know where else to take you. Bruno took good care of you, you’re all fine now! He told me you’d fainted due to severe stress and shock.” He paused, analyzing your expression. You were looking at him, but somehow, it felt like you weren’t really listening to him and were just spacing out. 

He looked down and bit the inside of his cheek, feeling terrible. He didn’t mean to fuck it up this bad by letting a civilian get involved in his business. And even more so if it was such a cute girl, who was in this state thanks to him. When he looked back up, he found himself with your open palm right onto his face, as you tragically shoved him and his ass touched the ground once more. Well, now he was confused. 

“You.” You started, still confused and sitting back up with tentative motions. You shook your head and looked around the room once more. Empty. Only Mista and you in there. Your fight or flight response activated. Looking back at the now tumbled over gunman, you saw him slowly rise up with both his hands at the sides of his head, in an apologetic, harmless gesture and with a dumb smile on his face. He did not expect that reaction, but it was honestly amusing, no one had dared to do that to him, if ever. “Yes?” He answered, slowly getting on his feet this time and looking at you, sitting on the sofa with a questioning look. “Where am I?” 

Your speech was shorter and calmer than you’d liked it to be, but that’s just how your body was willing to behave as of now. You felt tired. Looking straight into the man’s dark eyes, you noticed for the first time, at least with a clear mind. He really didn’t look bad, nor personality wise nor physically wise. You bit your lip and looked to the window behind him to his right. It was sunny, quite so, maybe it was lunchtime already. He cleared his throat and with a wave of his hand to bring your gaze back to him, he answered. “You’re at one of Naples’s Passione hideouts. Basically, our den.” Seeing how alarmed your expression got, he quickly waved his hands frantically before you, dismissing any threatening thoughts you might have gotten. “Don’t worry! We just treated you, you’re free to go now, well, we’ll have to drop you off somewhere so you don’t remember your way back here but, yeah. Nothing to worry about.”

“Nothing to worry about?” You blurted out, finally feeling your speech come back to you. “You’re telling me that, after seeing a man get shot by a gangster, getting taken to a mafia hideout and spending the night, I’m just, magically, going to be set free and about like nothing happened?” Your tone rose bit by bit until it came out in a panicked squeal. He blinked a few times in silence, his mouth small in surprise. After a few short seconds of silence and a “uhhhhh” from Guido, he replied, shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah?” You were the one to blink a few times now, confused. 

“...Okay.” You muttered, rising from your seat and walking to the living room’s door with no established destination. Once you got to the door, it flung open before you, making you let out a shriek and almost falling on your butt onto the floor once more. It was a tall, long white haired man with the aspect of someone who could easily crush your head with his bare pinky finger. You slowly recoiled back, until your back was met with an obstacle; two black boots to be more specific. Mista’s. He held you from under your arms and helped you up. Still feeling the fear seep into your body, you pressed your back flush against Mista’s chest, who let out a surprised cough at the contact.

“Is it this little chick the one you frightened to death, Mista?” The tall man spoke, his voice just as low as you expected it to sound like, you brought your hands together and rested them before your lower stomach. You were scared, they were the mafia, of course you were getting like, murdered or some shit!

“Sadly, yes. I really, really didn’t mean to, signorina.” He lowered his face a bit in attempt to direct his last words to you, to which you reacted by turning your face in his direction and, instead of yelling, pressing your lips shut. He was... well, closer than you expected. Feeling heat rise to your face, you quickly turned your face to the man at the door, letting out a small, angry huff. You just really, really wanted it all to be over or to be a weird dream.

“It’s... okay.” You let out quietly. What?? You didn’t mean to say that, it wasn’t okay! You were outright terrified and scared, and by yourself with the god damn Italian mafia! No matter, after a quick glance to the man behind you, you felt a weird sense of relief and comfort when you saw his expression soften and a bright smile beaming down on you. You really couldn’t find normal people attractive, could you now. 

“Well, when you’re done flirting, the car is outside, we already gathered where you live so all you have to do is sit quietly on the back and not take your blind off. Understood?” The other man spoke, making you snap your head right back at him alarmed. You really didn’t even know how to react aside than with a reluctant nod. Great, now the mafia knew where you lived, wasn’t that just, grand.

You got blindfolded by the one you were most comfortable with, the one that actually sent your whole night upside down and made you get caught up in this but, no matter, the nicest one so far. Mista was careful not to get any of your hairs caught in the knot, gently guiding you into the back of the car, which you assumed was a mini van, and feeling slight weight sink next to you in the seat as the engine started up. 

With a tentative hand, you palmed the space next to you, trying to find whoever was sitting next to you, even if you already had an idea, you wanted to confirm it. And honestly, this felt scary, so you just really wanted some reassurance. “Hm?” You heard from the man, who almost immediately covered your curious hand with his bigger, warmer one and squeezed it with care. “Don’t worry, we’ll drop you off soon and you won’t have to hear from us ever again.” He whispered to you, and you felt his breath clash against your ear, making you shiver. Did you... really want to never hear from him again? The thought crossed your mind, and lingered there for the whole ride.

When the car stopped, you felt him take your blind off, revealing the inside of a black mini van to you, empty for the most part, and sitting next to you now tucking the dark cloth in his pocket, Mista. He turned to you again and gave you a sincere, wide smile. “Here’s your house bella. I’m sure you’ll be happy to never get involved in this again, huh?” He commented, as he got up and opened the sliding door of the van and signaled you to get down. “Don’t worry, I’ll accompany you to the door if it makes you feel better.” It wasn’t that you’d feel better. It was that something... didn’t sit right with you about this. 

When you made it to the entrance, you opened the front door with your keys with ease, turning back to face him once more with your hands behind your back. He looked at you with a raised eyebrow and a confused pout in his face. “Is something the matter?” He started. You were trying to find the words to express what you wanted to say. 

“Y/N.” You started, looking him right in the eye, which seemed to fluster him a little. He tilted his head in confusion for a moment before you proceeded. “That’s my name, Y/N.” He opened his mouth to say something, but you cut him off by raising your index in front of him, he complied and kept his mouth shut. “I’d like to keep in contact with you so, here, have my number.” At this point, you really didn’t know what you were even doing, honestly. Giving your phone number to a member of the mafia had to be now crossed from your bucket list before you die, great!

He seemed to struggle to find his reply for a few seconds, these few seconds which you used to scribble down your number into a piece of clean tissue you’d ripped from your bag, and slapping it on his chest with maybe more force than necessary. He let out a small cough from the impact and started chuckling in response, grabbing the piece of frail paper and holding it over his heart with a smile on his face. “I’ll make sure to let you know when I get back to my phone then, miss.”

You couldn’t help but give him a smile of your own now, nodding and, after giving him a last look from head to toe, turning and finally stepping into your oh so dear apartment. Breathing in a deep much needed breath of air, you let yourself slowly sink down onto the floor while you used the door as support. When you touched the ground, you covered your face with your hands and let out a tiny scream. You were out of it. What’s the first thing you think of when held half captive by the mafia? Ask out one of it’s members because you think he’s cute. That’s it, you’d lost it, this was it.

You got up and decided to take a shower, taking your mind off things for a while and, inevitably, due to the intense distress your emotions had suffered for the past hours, you flopped down into your bed and fell asleep, not minding it being early in the afternoon.

When you woke up the next morning, you did not expect to wake up to three text messages from an unsaved number and for it to be already 1 in the afternoon. Checking the messages, you jumped from your bed and ran to the door, poorly fixing your hair on the way and thankful your door led to the apartment’s first floor hallway and not the street, you couldn’t have handled well being seen in this state.

“Hey! Guido Mista here, I hope you slept well and feel better today!”

“I’ll be out on errands today, so maybe you’d like to meet tomorrow since I’m free?” 

“Anyways, hope you like what’s on your door!”

You opened the door and saw a medium sized box laying on the floor. Upon squatting down and ripping it open easily by the adhesive tape, you noticed its contents with a delighted smile dancing on your lips. There was a small bouquet of pretty (although fake) flowers inside, a beautiful pair of shoes and a very nice looking summer dress. There was a small envelope inside, which you took in your hands and noticed a messily written “from Italy’s best gunslinger to Y/N” 

“Hello! Good morning, Y/N. I hope you like the gifts! I noticed your shoes had gotten a bit ruined from last night, as well as your clothes getting dirtied because of me. I had a friend of mine help out with choosing them out, she’s really into fashion so I hope it’s good for you! Pd: The flowers are fake since I don’t know if you’re allergic to them yet, so I hope we get to talk about it tomorrow!”

You pressed the surprisingly thoughtful letter to your chest and rummaged through the box with your free hand, noticing they’d gotten your size perfectly and how high end the clothes looked. They really went all out huh? Did you even deserve this? You didn’t give it much more thought after taking the items out and quickly running to try them out into your bathroom.

You loved the outfit! So you decided to pay him back in the most humble way you could, which was inviting him over for dinner though text. You could manage to cook something nice if you put your mind to it!

“Hi! Loved the gifts! Please, do come over tomorrow night for dinner, I’ll make you something nice as payback” Upon receiving this message, Mista immediately grabbed his phone even if it almost meant throwing down all his grocery bags onto the floor. Checking it, he felt heat rising to his cheeks, because of course he had to take your message the other way around first. Upon re-reading it and getting a clearer mind, he replied. “See ya tmrrow night then, bella.”

When the sun had just set the next day, you heard your doorbell ring. You’d put on his wonderful gifts for your outfit and carefully done your hair for the occasion, making your way to the door with a small smile playing on your lips, you opened it to find him standing there, in casual attire you hadn’t seen on him before. Those tight ripped jeans went well with his figure, and seeing his hair for once was a wonderful change.

The night went way better than you’d expected, with a few flirty comments here and there being exchanged between each other, you talked about your likes and dislikes, your lives, the music you liked... oh! The music you liked!

When you were done with dinner, Mista got up and walked up to your seat, holding out a hand for you while bowing reverently at you with a playful smile on his face. “Would you offer me a dance, signorina?”  You giggled, holding his hand only to be pulled into his arms and getting spun around in place while he laughed. When you got back on your feet, placing your hands on his chest and pushing his figure gently away from yours, you gave him a playful bow while holding your dress up by the sides and replied. “A minute, my dearest, for I must firstly play some sweet tunes.” He let out an amused snort and rested his back on the nearest wall, watching you make your way to your laptop and, knowing his tastes, playing one of your favorites from Whitney Houston. 

Making your way to him while dancing, he quickly beamed at you and, in two quick strides, he caught up to you, placing one hand on your hip and the other searching for your other hand.

While you danced and laughed like teens in love, with Whitney singing a very cheery “I wanna dance with somebody” in the background, you got to a point in which Mista’d spun you around and let you drop, holding you tight by your waist to avoid you actually falling. His other hand holding yours in his splayed to the side. 

Your faces were close, and your breathing clashed in a most wonderful way. He let his eyelids close halfway, giving you a tiny smirk as he gently placed his forehead in yours. You blushed, chuckling quietly at the gesture and placing the hand you previously had on his hip, up to the back of his head, gently tugging on his hair and brushing your lips with his. “Just do it already, Guido.” You heard him huff out a content “hmph” and promptly pressed his thick lips against yours, in a much more dedicated manner you’d expected from him.

From the moment he’d felt you kiss him back, and by the way he’d gently laid you down into the floor carefully, standing on his knees and slowly sliding one of his warm palms up on your thigh, you knew what was in store for the rest of the night. Ironically enough, Maneater had started playing when your dress was halfway lifted up, which made you both chuckle into each other’s lips.

Next morning, you can’t seem to find him anywhere, only to be surprised by him getting out of your shower and shyly smiling at you while looking somewhere close to the feet of the bed. “Good morning, tesoro.” He was so adorable it physically hurt you and made you hold a hand tightly to your chest. After he’d changed back into his clothes from yesterday and watched you change with an amused, flirty smile on his face, you both went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast before he had to leave for work.

You make breakfast together while Sweet Caroline plays, which ends up in you both dancing in the kitchen and almost letting the pancakes get burnt.

When it’s all done and ready, he departs from you with a kiss. “See you as soon as I’m allowed to, bella.” You both knew you’d meet up often in this manner from now on.

One day, while you chilled sitting in the balcony, he’d ask. “Hey, Y/N, not to like, ruin the moment but, are we like, dating or something like that?” You’d start laughing really loudly, getting up from your seat and sitting on his lap, planting a kiss to his lips and chuckling. “What do you think, dumbass.” He chuckled and kissed you back once more, giving a tiny nod in response. “Yeah, just needed the reassurance.”

When dating, he just really loves to show you off to absolutely everyone. He’ll pick you up and spin you around while showering you in kisses, kiss you while holding you in his arms, dramatic old style with one leg sticking out; in public or in private, this man is all about showering you with love.

When outside, he’s always holding your hand, or letting you cling to his arm, whatever that means you not leaving his side.

He’s really into going out and doing stuff! Get ready for lots of shopping with a very enthusiastic judge per boyfriend giving you a thumbs up and whistling with each outfit you try on. As well as beach activities in summer! He’ll buy you tickets for those boat rides that pull you from an inflatable and throw you into the water when they turn around. He lives for that sweet adrenaline with his girlfriend by his side.

The way you don’t bite your tongue and are so straightforward with your emotions and thoughts? Drives him wild. He lives for that clashing personality of yours, he even admits to have been turned on sometimes when you yelled at him for whatever he’d pulled; being either mixing his red pants with your white blouse in the washing machine, or not lowering the toilet seat after he’s done.

You’re so cute? So petite so adorable and so hot? How did he land this wonderful girlfriend?? He still asks himself this every morning he gets to wake up next to you, pulling you close into his arms and cuddling you until it’s time to inevitably get up and be productive.

This is the type of boyfriend to send you flowers every day he’s away and bring you breakfast when you’re together. The type to get over his fear of bugs and rid of the spiders and roaches for you. The type to try his best to make you lunch on weekends after letting you sleep in, only for it to turn out horrible and order your favorite takeout. A sweet, disaster type of boyfriend that loves you unconditionally. And that would stay by your side for as long as you’d let him.

Ghiaccio!

You’re one big challenge, and he likes himself a nice assiduous challenge once in a while, it amuses him, and that’s how you catch his eye at first. A smart, banter partner. 

Overtime and seeing how you retorted to his constant screaming and rage outbursts, he started to quiet a little, feeling how he’d met someone who would not back down even when they clashed with him. He started to like you, your strong personality was a rare thing to find nowadays.

He’s not really into PDA, but when you’re alone? He will and when I say he will I mean he w i l l have his hands all over you or just carry you around or hold you close just to be touching you constantly. He didn’t get much physical affection for a long time, and besides, you were warmer in comparison to him, your body heat felt most wonderful against his. 

As an expert butt lover connoisseur, he really wants to touch that wonderful cute round rear you have, one day describing it to you as “geometrical and biologically absolutely perfect”. He was kind of a dork, but you found it adorable no matter.

He’s very, very overprotective. That’s why he won’t let you come over to the office under absolutely no circumstances. What, letting his wonderful girlfriend come see him at the risk of getting bothered or even so much as talked to by his dumbass teammates? Not a chance!

He’ll never say the classic three words (I love you), but he’ll make sure to communicate it through his actions and small details here and there. “I was worried about you”, “I missed you”, “This made me think of you”, “You can have my last slice”, etc.

He really likes to wake you up in the middle of the night (which honestly, at first, irritates you, but you forgive him after) and suggest for you to hop on the car and go for a ride wherever, to have fun. Most times you’ll end up in an empty parking lot near the beach staring up at the starry sky and with his hands wrapped around your waist, as you comfortably sit in his lap and rest your head on his chest. 

On your sleepless nights, you’ll curl up together in the sofa and watch a marathon of Pixar movies, whilst he criticizes whatever flaw his analytic gaze finds. At first, just because that’s how he is, after a few sessions, he just did it as an excuse to get you to shut him up with those wonderful kisses you gave him, followed by a sweet “Shut up and watch the movie, caro mio.” 

He’ll read your writings when you offer him the opportunity sometimes. And, much to your surprise, he will never criticize them! He just reads them in silence, and when he’s done, he always says the same “It’s wonderful amore, you’re really talented.” And places a small kiss on the top of your nose as he volts back into his seat and types away on his keyboard once more. He’s always so overloaded with work it kind of saddens you, but still, he always makes some time for you, and you see that. You appreciate that greatly.

Get ready for late night conversations about the most variate topics. 

“Hey, do you think pigeons dream?” “Well, Y/N amore, it could be, due to the fact that pigeons do, like you; even if sometimes it’s not that clear, have a brain, and usually, brain owners do have the ability to dream.” “Did you just insult me and call me an airhead whilst debating if pigeons have the ability to dream?” “You know I say it out of love.” “Well, you’re ugly when you scowl.” “Excuse me wHAT-” You’d laugh and roll over in bed to hug him and bury your face on the crook of his neck, nuzzling your nose gently against it. “An eye for an eye.” He’d huff and blush slightly, holding you tenderly back and pressing his cheek on the top of your head. “Fair enough.”

Dance Dance Revolution

Welllllll the other night I couldn't sleep and wrote basically this entire thing in my head. It’s kinda based on how I feel about dance auditions and also slightly inspired by a dance moms clip I saw where the girls auditioned to be in a MattyB music video and it caused ~drama~. The reader description is kind of based on myself bc even though I’ve been dancing forever, I’m definitely bigger than a size 2 and it usually surprises people when I tell them about my dancing.

Background: You are a dancer at a small company who does it for the pure joy of dancing. When your studio is chosen to be a part of Tom Holland’s next movie, tensions mount between dancers as each hopes to be selected to dance with him on camera.

You took a big gulp of water before wiping some sweat from your forehead. You and your 12 classmates had been given few minutes to recover from barre before heading to center port de bras. 

You were one of the advanced dancers at the studio, having been doing ballet since early childhood along with other genres like contemporary and hip hop. Unlike some of the other girls, though, you didn't necessarily “look” the part of a typical dancer. You weren't tall and flat-stomached, but it never hindered you from performing and advancing in skill.

As everyone began heading towards the center, the door was opened by none other than the studio owner, Alyssa. She had a wide smile on her face as she quietly shut the door behind her. She asked your teacher for permission to interrupt class a moment and then moved to the center of the mirrors. 

“Girls, I have an important announcement,” she began, causing everyone to look around in confusion as she continued. 

“Our studio has been selected to be filmed in a new movie starring Tom Holland!” 

With that exclamation, there followed gasps and squeals, and you couldn't help the smile that stretched across your cheeks and the butterflies in your stomach.

“Wait, wait. Now before you get too excited, I have one more announcement,” Alyssa interjected, exclaiming, “In only a couple short weeks, we will be hosting an audition for one of you to dance a duet with Tom, and even if you aren't chosen, all thirteen of you will still be onscreen in the class shots!”

Everyone started jumping around and squealing even more in excitement.

With that, she left you to the mercy of your teacher, and none of you could help but feel ecstatic about the situation as you finished up ballet class.

The following Saturday, you turned on your favorite playlist and began stretching in one of the smaller studios. Very few people other than Alyssa and the people working in the attached dance store would be at the studio today and you had been given permission to work alone. Being one of the oldest dancers at the studio definitely had its perks with opportunities like this.

You also knew that some of the people working on the movie would be meeting with Alyssa, so you hoped that you could be left alone for a while to just dance. 

After warming up, you decided to freestyle dance for a while, just moving and letting the music take over you. You combined contemporary and ballet moves, doing some turns and jumps along with floor work. 

When the song you were dancing to ended, you stopped to catch your breath and get water when you noticed some people peeking through the window watching. You blushed slightly as you looked down at your attire: black work-out leggings and a tank top, hair thrown messily into a bun with wispies sticking out everywhere. 

You ultimately decided to pause the music and step into the hallway to say hi, and you found Alyssa standing with four people: One woman, two middle-aged men, and Tom Holland himself. 

“Y/n, these are some of the most important people working on the movie,” Alyssa said as you shook hands with everyone.

“You looked amazing in there,” the woman commented, garnering praise from the other people as well. 

“Thank you, that means so much! Honestly, I really wasn't even dancing, that was just some improv,” you explained.

“I can’t imagine how lovely it’d be to see you perform choreo, then,” Tom added, causing you to chuckle in reply. 

“I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that I hope you'll be auditioning in a couple weeks,” said one of the men. You nodded and said, 

“Of course, but I’m sure there will be stiff competition. I think we’ll make the choice hard for you all!”

With that, you bid them adieu and reentered the studio, pulling up a playlist of songs that you had choreographed dances to. You performed one of your favorite contemporary pieces, one that you would be doing in an upcoming show.

After finishing, sweaty and a little tired, you accidentally made eye contact through the mirror with Tom, who sent a wink before following Alyssa and the group down the hall to her office.

Two days later, you were getting ready for class and filling a water bottle when one of the other girls came up to you.

“I heard you got a head start on the audition,” she stated, arms crossed. 

You looked around and furrowed your brows.

“Um, I mean, I had some private studio time this weekend and the people touring with Alyssa saw me dance for a minute. Even if they had watched me a lot, though, I’m sure none of the people there will be on the audition panel.”

She gave you a look before answering with, “I guess we’ll just have to see,” then turned and walked into the studio.

Two weeks later, you were standing nervously in the waiting room, wearing a black leo and tights, a paper number “11″ pinned to your stomach. 

Over the past few weeks, tension had become thick with the day’s impending audition, and the girls (and some of the guys) of the studio had split on whether or not you had somehow cheated by accidentally meeting the movie heads. Along with the advanced dancers, some of the intermediates that were allowed to audition had also been swayed to see you as the bad guy.

Thankfully they hadn't discovered that you met Tom, and a good majority of people stuck by you. 

Finally everyone was called into the main studio for the ballet audition and you felt your stomach drop when you saw the panel: Tom, the other 3 people that you met, and two people that you guessed were choreographers. Alyssa was also sitting in and your teacher would be running the audition.

Alyssa then asked the panel to introduce themselves from left to right, starting with Tom, the director (the man that asked you to audition), executive producer (the other man), the casting director (the woman that complimented you), and the head and assistant choreographers.

You suddenly felt extremely nervous. Alyssa was right, the four people you had danced for really were the most important people in your life right now, and after everyone settled at the barre, the audition began.

Tom’s eyes caught yours for a second in the middle of your plie combination and he grinned, causing you to perform more and gain some confidence. 

A few hours later, you had gone through ballet, pointe, contemporary, hip hop, and musical theatre auditions and everyone was waiting for call backs. With some of the studio still split, you moved to the back of the room and talked with one of the guys that you were close with. 

The guys had also auditioned because they would be in the class scenes, even if they weren't doing a duet with Tom, per say (although the idea of any of those guys doing a major piece with Tom was kind of funny to imagine).

You leaned in and whispered into his ear, 

“The three people closest to Tom were the ones that watched me dance a few weeks ago.”

He raised an eyebrow at you.

“There’s more. Tom was there too, and he obviously recognized me. But you can't tell a soul about this,” you threatened, earning a nod in confirmation. You talked for a while longer until Alyssa came out holding a folder.

“Alright everyone! You are all going to be in the film, but unfortunately only one can be the lead. Right now, I only have one callback number but please stick around for a little bit if you aren't called just in case. The lucky number isssss...” she said pausing.

You looked at the girls around you, guessing who it would be. It was most likely going to be one of the girls with the ballerina bodies and model-level faces. You crossed your arms as Alyssa called out,

“Eleven!”

You looked around trying to remember who 11 was when you felt a nudge. Your friend was elbowing your side and he said 

“Y/n, that’s you!” 

You were shocked and finally stuck an arm up to alert Alyssa that it was you. As you walked past the girls, you heard the naysayers grumbling, whispering “told ya so!” and “I can't believe this!” to each other while your friends encouraged you.

The panel stood as you entered the room, Alyssa shutting the door promptly behind herself to keep everyone else out while you went to shake everyone’s hands.

The panel praised you for your performance and asked that you and Tom would partner a little bit to make sure you fit well. They especially liked that you were shorter than him, even in pointe shoes, and hoped that you danced similarly. 

He came around the table in black joggers, a grey t-shirt, and some black ballet flats, ready to dance. The head choreographer asked you mostly to do contemporary steps, like you rolling over his back and some floor slides.

She then asked that you did a lift to see what both of you were capable of. That’s when you felt really nervous. Other than when you were a small child, you had never been the person picked up in lifts, and actually, because you were pretty strong, you were almost always the base for lifts.

You were about to protest when Tom swept you off your feet, lifting you easily into a bridal-style carry. Your arms instinctively wrapped around his neck and you squealed, eyes suddenly meeting his, inches away. He smiled and smoothly whispered,

“Don’t you trust me, darling?”

You smiled and nodded, and he put you down carefully. The choreographer then asked you to stand with your left leg in an arabesque while Tom stood behind you. He hooked his left elbow under the upper part of your thigh and wrapped his right arm around your stomach.

You were hyper-aware of his touch and he made sure that you were alright before you tried to jump while he lifted. The first attempt, you jumped too early and he lifted too late, causing you both to fall over and erupt into laughter, apologizing a hundred times to each other.

The second attempt though, you both were in sync, and when he got you up, you positioned your legs into a fish lift as he spun you. At the end, he dipped you into a fish dive, then gently set you down into your splits and you spun on the ground, standing to face him.

The panel clapped and murmured before the casting director finally exclaimed four fateful words,

“You've got the part!”

As Alyssa and the panel figured out paper work, you turned to Tom.

“We never properly met, I’m y/n.”

He smiled and replied,

“I know. I asked Alyssa about you that day we toured. I couldn't keep my eyes off you then or today. You’re quite the talent.”

You blushed as the two of you got to know each other, excited that you would be dancing with the man you had been crushing on for ages.

After the casting process, there were two weeks of rehearsals for both the company and yours and Tom’s duet. Most of the girls ended up letting go of the idea that you had “cheated” and instead became overcome with excitement. 

You and Tom had enjoyed your private rehearsals together and when the day for shooting came, you felt so comfortable with Tom that you almost forgot there were other people in the studio.  At the end of the day, both of you were exhausted and sweaty, but extremely happy with the result.

You were now sitting on the ground by your dance bag, untying your pointe shoes and wiggling your toes, relieved to finally free your feet. Suddenly you felt a warm hand on your shoulder and you turned to find Tom smiling at you.

“You were incredible, love,” he said as he helped pull you to your feet. His arms wrapped around you into a sweaty hug. Into your neck he said, “I can’t wait to bring you to the premiere.”

You pulled away, surprised.

“The premiere? What do you mean?” you questioned as he smirked.

“I want you to be my date to the premiere. Of course, that’s months away, so maybe you could settle with dinner for now?” he asked, looking up innocently.

A laugh bubbled out of you and you nodded.

“Tom Holland, I would love nothing more than to have dinner with you, no premiere required.”

With that, you began a happy relationship that resulted in many, many dates, including more than just one movie premiere.

Now 8 year young Bishop, who is friendly and outgoing with everyone, even strangers, is sitting in a small windlowless kennel today waiting to die on Thursday, 4/17. After only knowing the love of his family, a parent and another large dog, he is set adrift, alone and terrified, not sure why this has happened to him. All he wants is to go home, and he thinks “I promise not to try to leap out of the tub anymore” (even though he loves water). He could do better than what he had, because his parent didn’t set many boundaries, and so Bishops life was unstructured when structure was what he and any dog needs. He is such a good, sweet boy, a wiggly, happy, lovebug who is so eager to please, and so treat driven that teaching him new things would be a breeze! So don’t let this family pet die. Covid-19 means the world as we know it has changed, and that means coffee consumption has, too. In May, there was an astounding 5,380% increase in US curbside and pickup coffee sales as many consumers had to stay at home. Overall, however, sales are down – by as much as 50% throughout Europe. 

But as more and more businesses decide that employees can return to work, how will office coffee consumption change? Shared office coffee pots may soon be a thing of the past, and many cafés are reopening at limited capacity.

To learn more about how we can adapt to these unprecedented times, whether in a coffee shop or in the office, I spoke with Alan Adler, Jieun Kim, and Mat North.

How Has Covid-19 Affected Coffee Shops?

For many of us, visiting a coffee shop near the office is a daily ritual. However, because of the pandemic, many businesses across the world have had to close their doors, including coffee shops. In June 2020, only 41% of small businesses were fully open in the US. To date, around 20% remain completely closed. 

Jieun Kim is a barista at KAHVE in Vancouver BC, Canada. She explains how the café has been affected by the pandemic:

“KAHVE had to close in March. In mid-May, the store reopened after the British Columbia Ministry of Health announced new health and safety policies for the food service business, including maximum seating capacity.”

Guidelines are still changing with Covid-19 infection rates, and they can be difficult to follow. It’s imperative that coffee shop owners keep track of any changes that could affect their businesses. 

Over the course of April, as many as one in five people across the world were instructed to stay at home. However, while many cafés closed, others adapted to offer coffee in a different way. For example, some changed to offer coffee and brewing equipment online, while others started providing pickup and delivery options.

Mat North is the founder and co-owner of Full Court Press in Bristol, UK. Since stopping indoor service on March 21, Full Court Press have started offering delivery by bicycle for customers.

Mat says that hygiene and safety have been priorities when he delivers coffee. He tells me: “For bike deliveries, gloves are useless unless you change each time you use them. I take some hand sanitiser with me, place [the] delivery on the step, and retreat where possible.”

Around 26% of coffee shops were fully cashless by the end of April, and this number is only set to increase as the pandemic pushes more people to move away from cash. However, Mat has designed a way for his baristas to accept cash and minimise the spread of the virus.

“Cash is a crucial system,” Mat believes. “There is no significant danger to taking cash if managed properly. To help [with] this, we use a UV sanitiser and tip trays.”

However, despite the fact that cafés are reopening, sitting in for an extended period of time isn’t really an option in many areas. Working, studying, or even having a meeting in a coffee shop is not currently feasible for most people. How we consume coffee has drastically changed, and it looks like it will still be a while before things are back to normal. 

“Coffee shops won’t be a place for study and work until the pandemic is gone,” Jieun says. 

Returning To Coffee Shops Safely

So, how do we adapt? Well, more and more businesses are reopening every day, meaning that you might be considering a return to your favourite coffee shop. Before you go back, however, make sure that you are fully aware of the new health and safety guidelines in place.

Jieun tells me about the protective measures used at KAHVE. “To protect staff, [we] provided masks and face protectors, [and] installed a glass shield at the till to avoid direct contact with customers.” She also notes that the coffee shop has “removed the complimentary area” and now “provides milk, water, etc upon request”.

Using personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks and face shields is crucial in preventing the spread of Covid-19. However, it’s important to remember that PPE is most effective when everyone uses it. Where necessary, remember to wear a mask inside a coffee shop. If you’re not sure whether or not you need one, keep a mask on your person just in case.

Remember that most coffee shops will also be operating at limited capacity. This means longer queues, so make sure that you arrive with plenty of time to spare, or wait until after the morning rush. Some coffee shops may offer hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes if you don’t come with your own. 

It’s also important to be mindful of the fact that procedures will change from café to café. Mat explains that Full Court Press have set up a socially distanced espresso bar that is comfortable for both customers and staff. 

“The key for us was to create a space that customers would feel safe and welcome in. We did this by creating space between the customers and staff, using an atypical bar design. All interactions are at an angle, which extends the distance between staff and customers.”

Responsibly Enjoying Coffee In The Office

For those who prefer to avoid cafés, brewing and drinking coffee in the office is still an option. However, as you go back to work, be aware that there will likely be a lot of changes in your office building. For example, many workplaces have now banned shared coffee pots entirely.

Where possible, drinkers need to consider responsible consumption options. Alan Adler is the president of AeroPress Inc. and the inventor of the original AeroPress coffee maker. He tells me about the new AeroPress Go travel coffee press, which is a self-contained brewing device that comes with its own mug and lid.

“It has a mug that the AeroPress fits inside of, along with a scoop, and you can even squeeze a little bit of coffee in there for a day’s use. It would allow you to keep your consumption germ-free, away from the usual office pot.”

As the AeroPress Go packs up in its own mug, the consumer can easily transport it from home to office without losing any of the brewing equipment. The AeroPress Go’s included mug also means that you don’t have to risk sharing mugs with your co-workers.

Most people would naturally be concerned that making coffee at your desk could get messy. However, Alan explains that the AeroPress Go is designed to prevent spillages.

“The process is very tidy: you put 1 or 2 scoops of grounds into the AeroPress Go, and the scoop means that they all go inside and don’t spill.”

“After you press it, you eject the grounds into the trash then you can just leave it alone. If you want, you could rinse it off, or simply wipe the seal with a tissue or paper towel.”

In some offices, kettles may not always be available. Alan says that this isn’t a problem for people using the AeroPress Go. He says that if necessary, “you can brew coffee with room temperature water” using the AeroPress cold brew recipe.

“It makes a very sweet and rich cup. You can enjoy it at room temperature, or warm it after brewing in the office microwave.”

For consumers who prefer to brew coffee at work, Jieun says that the “most important thing” is “using good beans”. She recommends that people “ask a barista for advice on which beans to buy, and if possible, invest in a grinder”.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re enjoying coffee at a café near your workplace, or brewing in the office. The most important thing is staying up to date on the health and safety procedures that are designed to protect you and those around you.

However, as you go back to work, consider which option is most convenient and comfortable for you. Brewing at your desk might not have been something you would have considered before Covid-19, but who knows – it might even become your new favourite hobby.

Lake Landing Lessons

My first flying lesson was in a Piper J-3 floatplane on the Hudson River in 1967. That exciting day led to a private pilot license and 300 hours of land plane time. I often returned to that Peekskill seaplane base on the Hudson to admire a Lake Amphibian based there.

One day the owner invited me for a ride. We taxied down the wooden ramp into the Hudson and, without ground or tower radio contact, we were airborne in minutes. That was the day I decided I wanted a Lake of my own.

So when I moved to British Columbia in 1974, I was delighted to find an ad in the Vancouver Sun offering a 20 percent share in a new Lake for $5,000. I called Ed, the Western Canada Lake dealer, and was a bit disappointed when he explained that this Lake was the only Lake ever made without wheels—a flying boat, not an amphibian. He had it moored to a log floating in the Fraser River.

Ed’s disposition was more like my high school football coach than my land plane flight instructors. After 10 hours of rough and intensive seaplane instruction in Vancouver’s Fraser River delta, he signed me off with a Canadian Seaplane rating stipulating that I was not to land in the sea! Ed wanted to check me out in coastal saltwater inlets first, so he insisted I only land in lakes and rivers. “Fine,” I agreed, and that night I called my brother, Bob, and my fishing buddy, Bill, and said, “Come to Vancouver, and let’s go steelhead fishing in the famous Dean River in my new Lake flying boat.”

They arrived one Friday in September, and we loaded the Lake with fishing gear, sleeping bags and a small inflatable dinghy. A sparse panel and no wheels or lights gave the Lake an empty weight of only 1,360 pounds with a useful load of 1,040 pounds, making a sea level takeoff from the Fraser River an easy task for the 180-hp Lycoming.

We flew northwest along the rugged BC coast towards a fuel stop at Ocean Falls using the plane’s only navigation instrument (the compass), charts and my watch. It was my first trip as a “Canadian bush pilot.” I thought a cautious way to land in the sea at Ocean Falls was to fly up the inlet, just south of Ocean Falls, and then turn north through a small, low gap in the mountains to Link Lake, located just above the town of Ocean Falls. That would put us in a position to land going out to sea and into the wind.

So that is what I did, making a smooth landing in the relatively calm sea.

We taxied to the fuel dock, and while I filled the gas tank, Bill went to fill our bottles with fresh water that was pouring from a pipe driven into the mountain.

Ocean Falls gets 300 inches of rain every year, and it just pours out of these pipes all day and night.

We taxied to the end of the inlet, avoiding the log booms floating just off shore, and took off for the Dean River fishing camp. We flew over the camp’s dock and circled to land in front of a beautiful, 500-foot waterfall at the end of the inlet. Felix, our guide, met us at his dock and insisted that we quickly unload and tie the tail of the plane to his dock and the bow to a shoreline tree with plenty of slack because the tide was running out, and the plane and his dock would soon be sitting on the muddy bottom.

We fished until dusk and all day Saturday, catching Coho salmon and large steelhead. Sunday morning a 300-foot ceiling was dishing out a steady coastal rain, and I was trying to decide whether to wait and see if it improved or just fly down the inlet a short distance to the same “Link Lake backdoor approach” we had used on Friday to land into the wind at Ocean Falls.

Bob looked at the sky and asked, “How bad is it?” I replied, “It’s okay if it stays the way it is.”

Bob’s response was, “What you’re saying is, it would be much too dangerous to fly if it gets the slightest bit worse.” I said, “Right,” and we jumped in the plane and took off.

We were flying just under the 300-foot ceiling in the rain when we got to the “Link Lake back door” pass we had used on Friday. It was in the clouds above the 300-foot ceiling, so we had to fly out to the coast and north a few miles to enter Ocean Falls directly from the sea. This set us up with a 20 mph tailwind, and the 300-foot ceiling created a scary box with granite walls on both sides and a mountain straight ahead. I was flaps down, ready to foolishly try a downwind landing, when I saw the huge log booms flashing by right under us at 75 mph (my 55 mph landing airspeed, plus a 20 mph tailwind). Thinking I was trapped in a box and would have to land straight ahead, I pulled the power off as soon as the log booms were behind us and started hitting the water too fast to settle on.

Bob told me we hit seven times. We were approaching the end of the inlet, so I added full power and pulled up to about 100 feet, adding lots of right rudder to make a tight turn within the granite walls.

Once we were facing into the wind, our speed over the water dropped from 75 mph downwind (55 plus 20) to 35mph (55 minus 20) into the wind, still a rough landing in the 3-foot swells. But at least I was on the water as a boat—no longer an airplane! I dropped the water rudder and started a right turn toward the fuel dock, but the right wing started dragging in the water. I saw that the right sponson that keeps the wing out of the water had been ripped off, probably by an unseen log boom. Continuing in this direction would allow the wind to get under the left wing, forcing the right wing under water and quickly causing us to capsize.

I immediately reversed course away from the fuel dock and toward the opposite rocky, forested shore. This kept the right wing into the wind and out of the water while the left wing sponson kept the left wing just above the waves. We hit the shore just where a log had washed up, which provided a landing buffer.

Bob jumped onto the slippery log and secured the plane while Bill and I struggled to pump air into the dinghy. I jumped into the ice-cold water up to my armpits and tied the inflated dinghy under the right wing to replace the lost sponson. That’s just about the time two Good Samaritan rescue boats arrived. Bob and Bill jumped into the first boat, and I stayed in the plane and switched on the electric bilge pump as the second boat attached a towline. He towed me back to a wooden seaplane ramp with the pump spraying water out of the leaking hull (we popped a few hull rivets), and the dinghy kept the damaged right wing out of the water.

My call to Ed went as expected. When he finished yelling at me for landing in the sea and adding up the money I was going to owe him, he agreed to send the Lake’s beaching gear up on the morning Grumman Mallard flight from Vancouver.

Once the big Mallard was off the seaplane ramp, I taxied the Lake to the ramp, where we donned our waders and affixed the beaching gear to the sides of the fuselage and under the tail. After we hauled the Lake out and tied it down, I pulled the hull drain plugs and hosed out the salt water.

We took the morning Mallard flight back to Vancouver. Ed ordered a new sponson and took it up to Ocean Falls two weeks later, attached it to the wing and flew the Lake and beaching gear back to Vancouver.

The total cost of repairs and Mallard tickets was just over $3,000. A small price to pay compared to the catastrophic outcome I avoided thanks to Ed’s intense training. He used rolled up newspapers to smack me when I got the Lake into dangerous angle of attack territory or failed to set up the correct attitudes and speeds for rough or glassy water landings while he shouted, “Stop trying to kill us!” Perhaps we should have spent more time on the perils of a downwind landing.

I eventually bought all of Ed’s flying boat shares and, never forgetting his admonishments, I logged 400 hours flying in British Columbia over the next 15 years without popping another rivet.

Skruffy’s Ninth Anniversary

Sister’s House, Citrus Heights, CA

Nine years ago this month this little critter came into my life.  Above Skruffy is sitting in my old office at the library sticking her tongue out at the cruel world that she left behind when she came into my life.    You see, she was “rescued” off the streets of Pine Bluff Arkansas…where for nearly 3 weeks she had been living under construction equipment such as large trucks, tractors, and other equipment where she had been abandoned by her former owners.  She had just had a liter of pups, and the vet felt she was just over 1 years old.  The construction people gave her the name Skruffy, I decided to keep it spelling it with a “K” instead of a “C”.   Below is a picture of her after I had her for a few months, taken care of her heartworms, had her fixed, and groomed.  I told them to leave her face looking “Skruffy”, and they did. 

For 16 months she went to the library with me day and night…even went on library trip to Colorado where I put her into Doggie Day Care during the day while I was in meetings.  For the first few months when she was in my office, if I had to leave to talk to a staff member, fix a computer, whatever, I would have to shut my door.  She would start barking fairly quickly, but it got better with time and she was able to stay in the office when I left it with the door open…but within ten minutes she would let out a quick bark or two…wait…and repeat.  Staff would go by and say, “He will be right back Skruffy…”, and that would quiet her down…for about 5 minutes, and then she would repeat her two quick barks.  “IF” my absence turned out to be a longer one than I anticipated, I would take her down to the bottom floor staff area and she would do just fine sitting in an office with a staff member.  When Marcia and I married in February 2011, along with Marcia came Bubba…and Bubba has allowed us to leave Skruffy without her going crazy because she was “alone”.   A year later we were on the road for 7-9 months each year.

CHIC ON GRAN CANARIA

Years ago, when I was obsessed with the series of books and later the movies,  “Twilight,” I met another devotee of the books who lived in Spain.  We became close friends online and “talked” via Skype.  We are still close even though we are no longer fans of the books.  While Izzy is Spanish she actually lives on the Canary Islands, that romantic destination that so many of us from the states don’t really know where they are.  In fact, the Canary Islands are just 100 miles off the coast of Africa, right near the Sahara Desert and Morocco.   Desert sand from the Sahara has made its way to the islands, carpeting the beach in its dry ivory sand.

The Canary Islands are seven tiny islands that are technically an archipelago.  They were populated before 500 BC and in 1483, Queen Isabella of Spain conquered the land after a five year war.  Their pleasant subtropical climate helps secure their reputation as a tourist attraction.   It was their location on the Atlantic Ocean that made them a popular stopover for explorers and Christopher Columbus often stayed there before he started off on his explorations.

The 7 Canary Islands.  The round one in the center is Gran Canaria.

The second largest island is called Gran Canaria and its capital Las Palmas is the largest town on all seven islands.  It is here on Gran Canaria that this story takes place.

This story starts with the debonair decorator Christophe Gollut.  Though born in Switzerland, Gollut now lives in London where he has a very successful career designing interiors for the upper crust and the titled English.   Though Gollut is not quite as well known in America, he is highly respected and very talented all through Europe.   His work has been published in almost every design magazines and it was through his friendship with the founding editor of The World of Interiors, Min Hogg, that the two now both have second homes on the Canary Islands,  Gran Canaria, to be exact.

When photographs taken by Miguel Flores-Vianna of Min Hogg’s house on Gran Canaria turned up in both this month’s Milieu Magazine and in Miguel’s fabulous new book Haute Bohemians – I became hopelessly obsessed with the island, with Min, with Christophe, and their charming houses there.

First things first…

How does a woman from London become the world’s most famous design magazine editor?

  Min and her family escaped the blitz during WWII in the countryside of Wales.

Georgina Hogg, seen here as a young girl, grew up in Regent’s Park, where she was the daughter of a surgeon, the personal doctor of the Queen.   Her mother was into the arts and took young Georgina, known as Min, to museums and tours of England’s stately houses.   Her mother had great taste, which she passed down to Min, along with her love of chinoiserie, porcelains, and faded carpets.

Min’s mother, Polly at 7, painted by a friend.  She was actually sitting in front of a fire – the snow was in the imagination of the artist.  Min credits her mother for introducing her to the world of beautiful objects.

    Min attended boarding school and, later, art school where she was a student of Terence Conran.  His wife Caroline got Min her first job in journalism – working as a typist for Queen magazine.  For a time Min dated the director John Huston and befriended his daughter, actress Angelica.     After Queen magazine came several other jobs and eventually, Min landed back at the now named Harpers & Queen as its Fashion Editor.  Her assistant?  Anna Wintour.  Yes, THAT Anna.

It’s long been known that Min and Anna Wintour were not the best of friends.  Anna knew that Min’s heart wasn’t in fashion and Anna was said to be livid that Min got the job over her.  But Min’s boss later defended hiring her saying she was “very intelligent and very articulate”  which obviously impressed him very much.   Anna ended up leaving her post and Min stayed on for a while longer.

After Harpers & Queen,  Min took a job at Interiors Magazine as its editor.  Her first assignment was to decorate their offices, which she did in blue and white.  “It ended up looking jolly good” she said.

When she landed what she has called her dream job – Min was 40 year old and had spent a lifetime visiting beautiful houses and traveling.  She was obsessive about things “looking right” and being head of a interior magazine allowed her to do it all,  just to please herself.

The magazine Interiors became The World of Interiors, a decorative read for the intelligent.  The stories came from all over the globe, with a heavy dose of history and the exotic mixed in.  WOI was an instant success and within six months of its launch, Conde Nast came knocking on its door with an offer to buy it.  As founding editor, Min Hogg became revered and respected.  Many have tried to copy WOI’s formula,  but its uniqueness is impossible to mimic.  As editor,  Min chose interiors that were the personal reflections of the owners as opposed to decorators.  She strove to publish houses that featured eclecticism, vintage style, and individualism,  not modernism nor minimalism.   She would cover anything from a palace to a pigsty, as long as she found it worthwhile. 

The first World of Interiors cover is shown here, center, with Anouska Hempel’s London sitting room on the cover.  The next issue had Monet’s Giverny  yellow dining room on the cover.   Min remembers the endless quarrels about what would go on the magazine’s cover.  “I completely ruled the roost!” 

Years ago, Houston designer Richard Holley told journalist Mitchell Owens why The World of Interiors was so influential:    editorial independence.   "It's not pushing the latest colors or the newest furniture or what's hot.”

That editorial independence came directly from Min Hogg.

In WOI, trends were ignored as were ads which are really how-to stories.   Perfectly decorated rooms were also usually avoided, although they weren’t ignored.  Mario Buatta said “Min hates decorators.”  He was only kidding, sort of.   Not true, Min replied.  She just believed that amateurs have a lot to teach the professionals.  “They are generally more enthusiastic and certainly more honest about their mistakes and how they managed to camouflage them.  Why does everything have to be so perfect? Nothing in real life is, you know,” Min told Owens.

In World of Interiors, Min printed stories that no other editors dared to print – such as a derelict stable elegantly designed by a 21 year old squatter.

Although Min Hogg studiously avoided covering trends – she actually started them.  The term “Shabby Chic” was coined by her.   Country Swedish?   After World of Interiors showed 18th century Swedish houses over and over again, a fad was started that is still going strong today.  Then, an article written about 19th century china inspired Pierre Frey to manufacture their famous teacup fabric called “Minton” which was a huge hit.

Min stayed at the helm of WOI for over 20 years and now writes for Cornucopia, a magazine about Turkish design which keeps her traveling all over the Middle East.  Today, in her 70s, Min has designed a line of wallpapers based on 18th century engravings of seaweed.  Of course!   She would never design a wallpaper collection of something mundane.

Min’s own London apartment, in a stucco townhouse down from Harrods, is typical of what is seen in The World of Interiors.   She is part cluttered, part hoarder, and it’s obvious she likes to be surrounded by things she loves.  “I don’t decorate, I just put things together,”  she says. 

  “Decorating is at a really low ebb, depressing beyond belief,” she says. “It’s the fault of technology. People have stopped looking at pictures and furniture.”

When Min first moved into her apartment, all the walls were papered in a honeysuckle pattern of different colors for each room.  Her mother told her to leave it as is.  Ten days before she moved in, the honeysuckle paper was all removed and the walls became pink instead.

Originally Min had a pink skirted table paired with pink tufted Belle Époque chairs that she says came from either the theatre or a brothel because there are only two casters on the front legs.

Words of wisdom from Min taken from different interviews in the New York Times and other papers:

'Over the years I've seen millions of places improved by the people who live there and not by decorators,'' she said. ''When the chance came to edit The World of Interiors I decided that I would show people not the usual interiors done by decorators.''

''I think we are going through a very arid time in design, you look at a modern house and what do you see? A chaise designed in 1929. Some Marcel Breuer. Some Corbusier. You look at new furniture and all you see is Mackintosh chairs, which is too bad, because neither the originals nor the copies are comfortable.''

In Min’s apartment, she later moved the Burma collection  to over her bed.

Later still, the ottoman is replaced with this footstool.  On the left is her blue and white striped sofa.

Min is known for the scarves she wears in her hair.  The reason? She explained in an interview that she hates going to the hairdresser, so she dyes her hair and cuts the “fringe” herself.  Her hair is long, but she doesn’t like long hair on older women, so she wraps it around her head – held up by the colorful scarf that is her now her trademark!!  Another trademark are her pearl earrings which she used to make herself, but now has them custom made.

When photographing her new line of wallpaper and fabrics,  the stylist had Min’s antique sofa covered in one of the designs –the fabric was added inside the frames too.

I can only assume she kept the new design on the sofa!

Min doesn’t like kitchen items hidden behind cabinets.  Instead, she has it all out on display.  Here, she put checked fabric behind the wired doors.

While Min’s London townhouse used to get all the attention – it is her house in Gran Canaria that is now in the news.

Why Gran Canaria?

It was through Min’s friendship with the afore mentioned Christophe Gollut that she was introduced to the Spanish Canary Islands.

Christophe Gollut and Min are great friends.  He was one decorator whose work was shown in World of Interiors, and long ago she also published him in Harpers & Queen.  He has had a long and highly respected career, working with those who can afford to furnish their houses with priceless antiques  - the complete opposite of Min’s aesthetic.  His clients are rumored to be the Rothschilds, the Flicks, Princess Michael…but, wait.  Gollut corrects this – he is friends with Princess Michael and only advises her on design. 

This house he designed was just recently shown in The World of Interiors:

The owners met Christophe on the Canary Islands where they both have vacation houses.  This is the fourth house Gollut has designed for the couple – the wife had inherited it from her grandfather.  Located in Madrid, it was once connected to the Royal Palace through an underground tunnel, created for perhaps a lady-in-waiting or a lover?   The house is an enfilade with room after room opening to each other.  The walls are painted green over a pink base.  The main salon is shown here with red upholstery.  Many of the antiques were purchased on the Canary Islands.

Just gorgeous!  I can’t imagine how beautiful this room must look in the evening.  The adjoining blue room is the stairhall.   The door at the opposite end of the dining room is now closed up – the once public neighboring room is today the master bedroom.

The main hall with Wedgewood blue walls and striped silk curtains.  I love the blue mixed with red.   Gollut took one look at the house and decided this room must be Wedgewood blue.  He is the type of designer who can immediately see how each room should look and then never wavers from that initial vision.

He and Min Hogg have been life long friends.

It was Christophe who discovered Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands and then shared it with Min.

Gran Canaria – the beaches ring the island whose center is high in the mountains.  It takes one day to drive around the entire island along its beaches.  Las Palmas is the largest city on the islands.  Where the yellow star is – is  where our story takes place, a bit inland, a bit in the hills.

Christophe Gollut was first to create his vacation house on Gran Canaria.  Min Hogg followed her friend there and together they both have wonderful second homes.

Gran Canaria is a mix of sandy beaches with hotels and quiet towns where there are no hotels or tourists.

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria.  Here, this photograph captures its colorful stucco houses and buildings.

Mogan is a colorful fishing town whose streets have arches to hold up the bougainvillea.   The island is one large hill!

Playa de Maspalomas, the 10 mile stretch of beach whose sand has drifted here over the Atlantic Ocean from Africa’s Sahara Desert.

Guayadeque – a ravine in the hills beyond the small village where Min and Christophe live.  In the older days, wealthy residents would have summer houses in the hills where they would stay during the hotter months.  The area is now a National Park and is filled with secret prehistoric caves where the Guanches, natives of the islands, once lived.

In the 15th century, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain conquered the seven islands.  It was here at this mansion that Christopher Columbus would stay before sailing the Atlantic to the Americas.

The town where Min Hogg and Christophe Gollut live is called Ingenio.  Located somewhat inland it is a quiet town without a hotel and with no tourists.

These houses are pink and orange and white.   The dark volcanic stone mixed with stucco is typically found all over the island.

Christophe Gollut’s house is the large white one on the left.  He joined three townhouses together to create his vacation house.  Located on a square, it is right next to a park.  The façade is said to be a copy of Christopher Columbus’s house.

The rooftops of his townhouse became gardens.   His roof has a painted floor, in light and dark pink, to mimic tile.   The area beyond the wall is another roof top, not used as a garden space.   Stairs on the left lead down to the courtyard.    Bougainville grows wild on the island.    A turquoise arched door leads inside.

The main sitting room is pink – a shade found all over Gran Canaria.  So lovely!  In the corner, an antique screen sits on a tabletop.  Different styles of French chairs sit atop antique rugs.

This room is located on the second floor – with the windows overlooking the front street and the side of the house.

This is the room that is the focal point of all the magazine photospreads – and no wonder why!  It’s a beautiful collection of French furniture in a tropical environment.

The master bedroom is grand, with a stone fireplace and antique furniture.  There is a large tapestry hanging behind the bed. The Egyptian bedspread covers the Empire bed during the day to create a sofa.

Another bedroom has a canopy bed with wallpapered walls.  There is an odd window up high.  Remember this is an old house – actually three houses combined together.

Min Hogg tells the story of how she landed in Gran Canaria in the 2017 Fall Issue of Milieu.  The beautiful photographs were taken by the phenomenon Miguel Flores-Vianna  who has a particularly good eye at capturing the homes of aesthetes like Min and Carolina Irving, another whose house he photographed for Milieu. 

This month, Vianna’s long awaited book was released – called Haute Bohemians - it is filled with the most interesting places owned by the most intriguing people, artists, designers, and others with enviable good taste.

The book is a stunning collection of photographs and Min’s house is a standout.  Her spread in Milieu was timed to coordinate with the book’s release date and everyone has been gushing with praise over both Min’s house and the book.

Min discovered the island and the town Ingenio when she visited her great friend Christophe Gollut.  They were walking along the cobbled streets and alleys when she saw a double wood door with an opened padlock hanging from it.   She and Christophe were curious and peeked inside to see what lay beyond the door.  It was a courtyard with a green painted balcony that ran along the upper floor, along with a large palm tree.  For years, the courtyard had been used to stable the animals, whose sheds remained off to the side.   The house was a complete ruin, but Min was intrigued.   She quickly found the owner who agreed to sell it.   Christophe had restored his own house just six years prior, so he was a great help in introducing Min to all the tradespeople and translating their Spanish into English.

When Min bought the house - thought to be around 200 years old  – there was no glass in the windows, just shutters.   There was also no electricity, water, or drains.   It took seven months to completely restore the house – all done while she lived in London.   It is a four hour plane trip from London to the Canary Islands and Min visits just three times a year.  I looked on Air BnB to see if she rents this beauty out – but no such luck!!

Originally all the rooms lead directly to the courtyard or the verandah but there was no connections between the rooms, internally.   To rectify this, Min had doors punched through the rooms – their stucco walls are over 2 feet thick!    She created three bedrooms, each with a bathroom, for herself and guests.  She also created a connection between the dining area of the main room and the kitchen by making a hatch window in the stucco wall.   She also moved the kitchen from the ground floor up to the main floor.  The former kitchen is now a garden cum laundry room.

The main sitting room!   I’m hopelessly in love with this room and would love to live here always!!!   The rug is a red and white stripped dhurri.  In the center is red and white striped ottoman that divides the room into two areas.   The walls are a fabulous pink with green trim.  While it resembles Christophe Gollut’s drawing room in Ingenio, Min’s is a bit more fanciful.  I can’t decide if she has one or two chandeliers?   She added the crystals to it, bit by bit.  I think she has two.   I love this blue and white lamp with the pleated shade!

Much of the furniture was bought in France and shipped to London.    She collected everything for months and then sent it all together to Gran Canaria when the renovation was complete.  There are two French sofas and a wonderful painted screen.  One sofa wears an antique rug, the other is covered by old curtains from her mother’s house.

Notice a large difference between this house and her London apartment?  Here, there are no prints or paintings hanging on the walls.  In London, there is not one inch of wall left uncovered by art work.  Here, Min said the house called for plain walls.  And, I do think she is right. 

Another think she is right about?  The chandelier.  The size is extra large – since the room is also.  And I love how it is so curvy and feminine – the curves are juxtaposed against the strict rectangular shape of the room.   Whether she has one or two, I love her choice.

I hate to leave this story!  I’ve been so obsessed with Min and her two houses, especially this one with the glorious photograph of her living room by Miguel Flores-Vianna.   Finding the photos of Christophe Gollut’s Gran Canaria living room which resembled Min’s but in a dressier way, made me obsess over these two houses even more!!
