Ooo, I love these kinds of questions- fair warning, though, I can’t just pick one bird! So I’ll give you my favorite of each type.
Raptor (owl and non-owl):
My favorite raptors are short-eared owls and peregrine falcons! Short-eared owls purely for aesthetic reasons (they’re like… the tortoiseshell cats of the owl world), and peregrine falcons because they are just… so cool.
Waterbird:
The Great Blue Heron! They’re a common sight where I live, and the perfect mix of majestic and kinda goofy? I love watching them fly overhead.
(Honorary mention to the herring gull- any seagull really, I have a lot of respect for them, they’re a great example of urban wildlife- but the herring gull is very aesthetically pleasing to look at. Very Shaped.)
Songbird:
I won’t lie. I’m biased, lol- I adore Cedar Waxwings! They’re your helpful neighborhood gardeners, and they have so much personality! It’s a real treat that I get to work with them- they also have very lovely calls!
Galliforme:
Ahh, the noble chicken. Really, any galliforme bird is cute, but chickens are just… so lovely. I used to have a flock, and I adored them- they’re great pets! They’re intelligent, they have a fascinating social hierarchy, and come in so many cool breeds and patterns. I hope to have more someday!
Corvid:
Stellar’s Jays! Why oh why do these birds have to live on the west coast? They’re so pretty! All corvids are neat, incredibly intelligent and funny, but just look at it!
My first time at the poultry auction…And lesson learned: Don’t believe what they tell you. They said I had 2 Red Cochin Bantam Frizzle pullets. By the time I got home I was pretty aware, nope, pullet and cockerel. Live and learn.
