Vettel apologises to Hamilton for pair's infamous Baku 2017 clash as he gets set for final F1 race weekend in Abu Dhabi
Ahead of his final race weekend in F1, Sebastian Vettel was in a reflective mood as he fulfilled his media duties in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, taking the opportunity to apologise to Lewis Hamilton for an incident during their F1 title battle some five years ago. A four-time champion and winner of 53 Grands Prix, Vettel was joined by fellow F1 veterans Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the pre-weekend drivers’ press conference at the Yas Marina Circuit, during which there was an emphasis the German’s upcoming retirement. Asked to talk about his long-time rival, Hamilton jokingly described Vettel as “a bit of a nuisance”, making reference to the 2017 and 2018 seasons – when then Ferrari driver Vettel pushed Mercedes man Hamilton for the title. READ MORE: Hulkenberg to make full-time racing return to Formula 1 with Haas in 2023 It was during the 2017 campaign that a controversial banging of wheels occurred at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Vettel reacting to what he felt was a brake test by side-swiping Hamilton’s car – a move he was penalised for. Just as Hamilton had started his recollections, Vettel jumped in to make a public apology for his actions in Baku, with the pair going on to explain how the moment made their relationship stronger in an enlightening back-and-forth exchange... Race: Vettel and Hamilton collide under the safety car Vettel: “I’m actually quite sorry, it’s your answer. I think Baku for me wasn’t a great moment, because what I did wasn’t right…“ Hamilton: “Sure.” Vettel: “But actually I think from that moment onwards…” Hamilton: “Our friendship got better!” Vettel: “Yeah, a lot better – so I don’t want that to not happen, if you see what I mean.” Hamilton: “I agree, agree.” ANALYSIS: Why Haas split with Schumacher, how Hulkenberg got the nod – and why Steiner isn’t worried about tension with Magnussen Hamilton went on to add, turning to Vettel: “I think we’ve always had such great battles. I was just sitting here thinking, most drivers are coming back, he’s coming back! You’re probably going to come back! We’re seeing other drivers coming back, so I’m sitting here kind of accepting that it’s your last race, but you’ll be back! Formula 1 has a way of sucking you back in, we’ve noticed that from so many other drivers.” Vettel will leave Aston Martin, and F1, after this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Hamilton and Vettel’s discussion aside, the latter explained how he was feeling heading into the final race of his illustrious F1 career, reiterating that he has no regrets over the decision at this point. “I don’t know, maybe I should ask Fernando! He went through [retirement] already and he will go through it again, I guess, at some point,” Vettel laughed, pointing to Alonso’s departure from F1 at the end of 2018 and return for 2021. “I feel okay. After so many years and races there’s the routine of Thursday. I think it’s difficult in a way to grasp, but I’m aware of what’s happening and I’m happy about it – as far as I can be.” READ MORE: ‘It’s still work in progress’ – Wolff keeping his feet on the ground after Brazil win as he insists Mercedes’ recovery isn’t complete Pushed if he expects emotions to be running high over the weekend, he said: “We’ll see. I guess it will be at some point a little bit different. It does feel a little bit different already today, even though, like I said, a lot of it is routine. “How much and how different it will be, I don’t know yet. I guess you have to ask me again – if you catch me!” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Aliyev calls snap presidential election
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday called early presidential elections for 7 February.
Aliyev, 61, was last re-elected in 2018 for a seven-year term. He won a reported 86 per cent of the vote in a poll boycotted by the main opposition parties.
In September, after a nine-month blockade, he ordered a lightning offensive to wrest full control of Nagorno-Karabakh from the ethnic Armenians who had ruled it for more than three decades.
It was Baku’s second successful offensive into ethnic Armenian-controlled territory in three years. Almost all of the region’s 120,000 or so ethnic Armenians fled as a result of the military conflict.
Thanks to his country’s oil wealth, Aliyev has forged a strong alliance with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, while managing to maintain a working relationship with both Russia and the West.

Navigating This Blog:
Firstly, please remember that my tagging system is for my use. I'm very happy when my blogs help people find stuff! But their first function is to help me find stuff. <3 1. If you’re looking for a specific race, the tag format is [location] [year]. For example, #monaco 2021 or #saudi arabia 2022. -> Azerbaijan is listed as Baku. -> Countries with multiple races will be tagged as both the country and track (for example, Spain and Valencia/Jerez/Barcelona, Germany and Hockenheim/Nurburg). -> Where possible, days are also tagged. So, for example, #mexico 2022 thursday. 2. If you’re looking for just a specific year, the format is either #flashback fic ref [year] or #fic ref [year]. #flashback fic ref is any year before 2021. #fic ref is for 2021 onward. 3. If you’re looking for just a specific track, that’s tagged too! Just search the country. 4. On a quest for other racing-related content but not from F1 race weekends, you say? -> Pre-season and post-season tags! For example, #pre-season 2021 or #post-season 2022. -> Testing, specifically, is also tagged! The format is testing [year], like #testing 2022. 5. Things he does in his capacity as an F1 driver, but not strictly racing-related? -> The FIA gala is listed under both “fia gala” and “fia prize giving”. For example, #fia gala 2018. -> Charity soccer matches! Partita del Cuore / Champions For Charity 6. And, of course, non-racing-related content: -> The format is [year] not a race. For example, #2017 not a race. -> If you’d like a specific time period during a season, it’s separated by what races it fell between. For example, #between japan and usa 2022. -> Summer break 2022 7. Feeder series! -> F4 -> F3 (all) / F3 2017 / F3 2018 -> F2 (all) / F2 2019 / F2 2020 8. All under-18 content is tagged as #childhood photos. 9. Relationships (not taking requests to add to this): -> Michael -> Smick / With Seb (underage) -> Lewis Hamilton -> George Russell 10. Important! On the website version of Tumblr, you can combine search items. This is immensely helpful for finding specific things! -> So, for example, if you open search and type in "britain 2022, smick" it’ll only pull up Smick pics from the British GP. :) -> Or “testing 2022, barcelona” 11. Trigger tags I commonly use: * These are either for my use or by request and are not up for discussion or debate. If you need something added, please drop me a dm or ask to let me know. 💖 -> #tw max (verstappen) -> #tw transphobe (webber) -> #tw nico (rosberg) -> #tw kimi (raikkonen) -> #tw bernie ecclestone -> #tw helmut marko -> #tw christian horner -> #tw dietrich mateschitz -> #tw nikita mazepin -> #tw crash -> #tw death -> #tw body perception -> #tw food / #cw food This is a pretty exhaustive list, but if you need help or are confused, feel free to contact me! <3

Thank you for being here. Thank you for being wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for fighting, staying strong and staying alive even if you're not fighting. Thank you for sticking by me and cheering me up even though you didn't have to. Thank you for being a friend.❤️
i poured my absolute heart into this for no reason and i wish you were off anon so i could actually talk to you. 💓
what the fuck im actually sobbing right now lol. like you dont understand how thoughtful this is? like you guys dont know how i feel so alone at times and i really dont want you guys to know that because i hate having a negative vibe on here and it just makes my whole day when you guys talk to me and interact with me, like i feel like people care you know? i havent told anyone in my life that ive thought about killing myself, that ive written a note and was typing up my last words to people i thought would care. and i dont even think ive said it here either.
i... just really like talking to you guys and i always have a wide grin on my face when you guys send asks or tag me in anything because ive felt so lonely on here for awhile and im just always happy to see that i come back to that i still have 2,500+ followers -- even if they arent active like they use to before im still grateful that theyre still here. even with me suddenly disappearing. im trying to keep active and positive for you guys.
like since august and even ending 2018 ive just had my trust broken by family members and friends alike so when i come here and see nice messages or anyone like "oh my god i love your story" "oh my god im so glad you did xyz" like.... it makes me feel important. it makes me feel me again. im really trying to stay positive for you guys but even fucking now i dont feel like i can trust anyone but the people who make an effort to talk to me.
so i really thank you and everyone else who checks up on me. thank you for the people who care for me. because i really feel like you guys are my friends and honestly when i started writing for this fandom, i didnt even have the intention to grow fast or get popular for writing a peepee going into a vahaheheen. im not popular but it just feels nice seeing when you guys reblog and talk to me. so thats why i even go through my following and follow you guys back, reblog and bring up peoples writings and stuff because i know when i see things like that, i feel fucking amazing.
i want to give the same help that people that i look up to in this fandom gave me when i had first started (baku-tm, love katsu, cherry especially) like they helped me, and this blog use to be two people but its just me now so with that little help and how hard i work to write eRoTiCa and that people followed me for... me. and i know you guys are frustrated with how mean i can be sometimes, and i needa chill lol but it just makes me sob that you guys actually stay. through thick and thin. even seeing me at my worst self.
i didnt even have the balls to say this before but i was planning on killing myself last week on thursday until i remembered that i was going to do something for you guys for christmas and i didnt want to let yall down. and i just feel so connected to you guys and yall prob havent seen or know my name lol!
so keep reblogging my stuff, keep talking to me, and for the love of g o d if you guys write something -- i dont care if you think its fucking trash, if its your first story, youre a little rusty -- i dont give a fuck give it to me. im here to help support you guys the way you guys support me.

Yarmolenko is the current top scorer of Ukraine with 37 goals (only Shevchenko, of 48, has more), he is on fire again after returning from a long-term injury.

For Austria, this is a second successive qualification and will only be their third participation in the final, having also been co-organizers in 2008.
The victory allowed Austria to place second in Group G, behind already qualified Poland and left North Macedonia in the hope of winning the qualifiers for the chance to also participate in the final. Austria to face Ukraine, Holland and Group C D or A winner

Austria has struggled to unlock their defenses for the past two years, but at China-based Arnautovic they have a striker who invariably finds the key.

Key player: Raheem Sterling
Sterling said It would be an important step. In our country, there are still many people who are a little locked in on themselves. I think such success could push them to open up.
But, in any case, an English victory for the Euro, whatever the composition of the team, would have a positive impact on the whole country and in all areas.

Swedish professional footballer Robin Olsen, who plays as a goalkeeper for the Serie A club Cagliari, on loan from Roma and the national team of Sweden.

Poland was surprised everyone in the Euro qualifying phase, losing just one of their ten games while dominating Group G with relative ease.
With world-class striker Robert Lewandowski on their books, it was already a tough battle for most of their opponents throughout qualifying, as the 31-year-old made six out of ten matches.

France reached its eighth European final in a row rather comfortably and qualified without being disturbed by a series of serious injuries. Didier Deschamps, therefore, had to call on 29 players, including some newcomers such as Clement Lenglet, Leo Dubois, Ferland Mendy, Tanguy Ndombele and Jonathan Ikone.
But his strongest possible structure is very similar to that which won the World Cup, with only Lenglet having outstripped Samuel Umtiti in central defense.
Key player: Antoine Griezmann
Griezmann remains France's undisputed technical leader and their main inspiration. Anything but a place in the last four next summer would be considered a failure.

Now that I’m home I can finally sort all that photo mess that I have from my whole journey and make a decent (ha?) post about my second ever F1 weekend. German GP 2018, probably the last F1 race at Hockenheimring.
To be honest, I just start thinking that I should never ever come to one again because once I’m there, my favourite driver(s) race is not that good and with a lot of issues.
It was a hell of a wekeend actually (literally, half of it was the terrible heat and the other half was a sort of a flood - lightning storms and wrath of the skies included). A short story of how it was with bits of unnecessary personal information.
Thursday was a pit-walk day and I was really excited: it was Sebastian’s home GP so we believed that the chances for him to go meet the fans were really high. Having spent some hour or two camping in front of Ferrari garage paid off and there he was! Cute and nice and attacked by piles of fans but I still managed to have a small talk and a selfie with him (seriously, my extreme-conditions-selfie-skills still suck, sorry for that orc with Seb in the first picture). Presented my drawing (probably that was the reason I was honoured with so ‘much’ attention) and he seemed to like it, yaaaas! It was the third day since I arrived to Germany but it was already the highlight of the whole trip (reminder: still had almost a month of travelling ahead).
Friday was the practice day, no special events for fans, but I checked my place at the grandstand and it was perfect: could actually see half of the track from my spot (that panorama shot is the one). Got to discover the surroundings, fan attractions and stuff. Met some friends and tried local pizza. Not the best one ever but still good. Just a note here: my previous F1 weekend was Baku so it was a completely different track, and also my place was at the longest straight so I could enjoy that not-so-big piece of the track that I could see and those awesome loud sounds of cars rushing by but this time I was sitting by the last turn of the track and could see a number of other turns and straights and it was really exciting. In no way I want to say that it was a bad experience back there in Baku but I definitely enjoyed Hockenheim more.
Saturday was the first day of the flood. Bought a raincoat for 10 euros (wtf) and upon my arrival to the track site I was actually shocked to discover the lack of the signal on my phone. Is it dead? Is my phone dead? What if my aunt is trying to reach me and she can’t and thinks that I’m dead? Nothing special that was though, and a simple explanation to that was just too many people in one spot and everyone’s connection was dead. The issues started before that though, I have missed half of P3 because I couldn’t get into the train to Hockenheim - too many people, the first train couldn’t fit us all in, the next one was in an hour. Well, crap. But at least that wasn’t the quali. Later on, the qualifying was actually good even though rainy: the grandstands were full and the atmosphere was great, so many people in red and when Seb took the pole, the cheer was loud. The schedule said that in some 2 hours after the qualifying there was a fan forum with autograph session, and my friends and I believed that if we rushed to the place right after the end, we would be lucky to be close enough to the stage (and our grandstands’ entrances were actually close to the place of the forum) but oh how we were wrong: it took us literally a couple of minutes to get there but the spot was already full of people and we could hardly see the stage. Somehow it didn’t feel too bad, that day we celebrated anyway.
Sunday was good at start. The drivers’ parade, the show, the beginning of the race and the weather - yeah, it was perfect. The grandstands made waves all together and it was fun and they booed those grandstands who failed to make a decent wave (like, yeah, booing is not good but that was a friendly booing so everyone was ok with it). We made a huge flag with those cards they gave us and I was a red piece (yay). It was epic, fantastic, spectacular, promising - right until the rain started and then... well, you know. The mood was just as grey as the weather. We were trying to leave the grandstand when the rain turned into storm with thunder and lightnings (perfect day for a astrophobic person, ha) and there was a literal flood around: I and some others found shelter under the women’s toilet roof and the water was coming closer to our safety island so I decided to try to escape as soon as the thunder was gone. It was the day the cars I cared about so much crashed: first it was Seb and then I got a call from my aunt saying someone hit my uncle’s Mercedes (that was the wrong merc you dummies... i am only skilled to make stupid jokes, i’m sorry, no hate please). And he was supposed to pick me up after the race. Well, crap. The happy end though: it wasn’t a bad hit so he actually picked me up after the race. The very end of the whole race weekend was predictable but we tried to keep hope to avoid it but it didn’t happen: we got stuck in a traffic jam full of people trying to leave the track site.
It was just another great experience and time to remember. Things never go smoothly as planned or desired, so yeah, we mourned but we never lose hope. And also I still had most of my journey ahead, new adventures I’ve been looking forward to. But that’s a completely different story.

Navigating This Blog:
Firstly, please remember that my tagging system is for my use. I'm very happy when my blogs help people find stuff! But their first function is to help me find stuff. <3 1. If you’re looking for a specific race, the tag format is [location] [year]. For example, #hungary 2016 or #usa 2019. -> Azerbaijan is listed as Baku. -> Countries with multiple races will be tagged as both the country and track (for example, Spain and Valencia/Jerez/Barcelona, Germany and Hockenheim/Nurburg). -> European GP content is tagged as both European and the name of the track, either Valencia or Baku. -> Where possible, days are also tagged. So, for example, #monaco 2019 thursday. For example, #pre-season 2012 or #post-season 2009. -> Testing, specifically, is also tagged! The format is testing [year], like #testing 2018. -> Race of Champions? Goes by year, and is listed under both “roc” and “race of champions”. For example, #roc 2008 or #race of champions 2011. 5. Things he does in his capacity as an F1 driver, but not strictly racing-related? -> The FIA gala is listed under both “fia gala” and “fia prize giving”. Examples: #fia gala 2018 or #fia prize giving 2011. -> Autosport Awards / Laureus World Sports Awards / German Sportspersonality of the Year -> Charity soccer games: Partita del Cuore / Kick Fur Kinder / Champions For Charity 6. And, of course, non-racing-related content: -> The format is [year] not a race. For example, #2007 not a race. -> If you’d like a specific time period during a season, it’s separated by what races it fell between. For example, #between japan and usa 2018. -> Summer break 2022! 7. Feeder series! -> Formula BMW ADAC (all) / Formula BMW ADAC 2003 / Formula BMW ADAC 2004 -> Formula 3 (all) / Formula 3 2005 / Formula 3 2006 -> Formula Renault 3.5 8. All under-18 content is tagged as #childhood photos. 9. Relationships (not taking requests to add to this): -> Sewis -> Smick / With Mick (underage) -> George Russell -> Michael Schumacher 10. Important! On the website version of Tumblr, you can combine search items. This is immensely helpful for finding specific things! -> So, for example, if you open search and type in "hungary 2022, smick" it’ll only pull up Smick content from the Hungarian GP. :) -> Or “flashback fic ref 2011, autosport awards” -> Or “testing 2013, jerez” 11. Trigger tags I commonly use: * These are either for my use or by request and are not up for discussion or debate. If you need something added, please drop me a dm or ask to let me know. 💚 -> #tw max (verstappen) -> #tw transphobe (webber) -> #tw nico (rosberg) -> #tw kimi (raikkonen) -> #tw bernie ecclestone -> #tw helmut marko -> #tw christian horner -> #tw dietrich mateschitz -> #tw crash -> #tw death -> #tw body perception -> #tw food / #cw food This is a pretty exhaustive list, but if you need help or are confused, feel free to contact me! <3

Controversial technical directive was overseen by Toto Wolff's former personal lawyer
The controversial technical directive put in place to combat 'porpoising' F1 cars was overseen by Toto Wolff's former personal lawyer Shaila-Ann Rao A technical directive was put in place this week to combat 'porpoising' cars This has been a major issue for Mercedes in the opening weeks of the season Addressing this issue has caused a split in the paddock over the past week It has emerged that this directive was overseen by Toto Wolff's former personal lawyer By Jonathan McEvoy for the Daily Mail Published: 17:36 EDT, 19 June 2022 | Updated: 17:38 EDT, 19 June 2022 It has emerged that the technical directive which caused uproar in the paddock this weekend was overseen by Toto Wolff’s former personal lawyer, Shaila-Ann Rao. She moved to the FIA only last month, taking up her post following her departure from the world champion team. The Warwick University-trained lawyer is chief of staff to recently elected president Mohammed ben Sulayem and was made interim secretary general for sport at the beginning of the month. Toto Wolff's former personal lawyer had a role in regulations being changed by the FIA Her appointment has raised some eyebrows among Mercedes’ rivals, with Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto saying in Baku last week: ‘Certainly, it’s a concern. She is a great person. She’s got a lot of experience. She will certainly be capable of doing the job. It’s down to them to make sure there will be no conflicts of interest at all, to behave properly. It’s up to the president to ensure that.’ The FIA issued the technical directive last Thursday, seemingly answering Mercedes’ plea for a mid-season change to this year’s new regulations in order to combat their problems with a ‘porpoising’ — or bouncing — car. Wolff argues strongly that the jolting phenomenon is felt by all teams and presents a serious danger to the brains and backs of drivers. A fierce row erupted at the team principals’ meeting on Saturday between Wolff on one side and Binotto and Red Bull’s Christian Horner mostly united on the other. Mattia Binotto hopes Shaila-Ann Rao's role does not cause a conflict of interest Christian Horner is on Binotto's side in the debate that has erupted in recent days Ferrari and Red Bull, the two teams who have best mastered the regulations, told Mercedes to get their own concept right rather than use, as they see it, safety concerns as a pretext to press for changes that could aid their performance. One observer accused Wolff of losing ‘his s***’ during the debate. This is denied by others, who said the Austrian merely made his point with measured vigour. Later Wolff said: ‘This situation has clearly gone too far. Team principals trying to play political games is disingenuous. All of the cars, not just Mercedes, suffered in some way in Baku (last week). ‘It’s a fault in Formula One at the moment and it’s an issue that needs to be solved. Little manipulations in the background, Chinese whispers, it’s pitiful.’ As for Rao, she has worked as a lawyer in the UK, France and Switzerland for 30 years. She was FIA legal director from mid-2016 to the end of 2018 before spending three-and-a-half years at Mercedes as general counsel and then as special adviser to Wolff. ISTANBUL, Turkey—On Sunday afternoon, a video depicting a large convoy of Islamist Syrian rebel fighters yelling enthusiastically as they drove off to war circulated widely on Arabic social media. Fighters in the packed trucks, driving quickly past the group of children filming with their phones, could be heard yelling “Allahu Akbar!” and, “Our leader, 'til the end of time, is our master, Muhammad!”However, what shocked those watching the video weren’t the shouts of the Syrian fighters but rather those of the children filming, who yelled back at the soldiers in a language unfamiliar to most Syrians following their country’s nine-year war. “That’s not Kurdish, right?” said one user in an online group where the video emerged. “If they were Kurds, you think they’d be cheering them on?” responded another with a laugh out loud emoji.Over the next several hours, rumors swirled that the video was shot in Azerbaijan, a small Turkic-speaking nation lodged between Iran and Russia, and that the Syrian rebel fighters had been sent there to prop up the Azeri government in its war against neighboring Armenia that had begun that day. According to high-ranking Syrian rebel sources that spoke to The Daily Beast, these rumors are true. The fighters that appeared in the circulated video were part of a group of 1,000 Syrian rebel soldiers sent in two batches from Turkey on September 22 and 24.“500 Hamza Brigade fighters were flown last Tuesday from southern Turkey to the Azeri airbase at Sumqayit [30 kilometers north of the Azeri capital of Baku]”, according to a source within the Syrian National Army (SNA) rebel outfit who requested anonymity. “Two days later, on Thursday, another 500 fighters from the Sultan Murad brigades rebel faction were similarly flown out to Azerbaijan.”These claims were echoed by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Syrian opposition body that monitors human rights violations in the country. SOHR sources suggest more batches of Syrian rebel fighters are preparing to be deployed to Azerbaijan. The Hamza and Sultan Murad brigades are known within Syrian rebel circles as factions that enjoy especially close relations with Turkey, the last remaining patron of the Syrian opposition. Sayf Balud, commander of the Hamza brigades, however, is also known for his checkered past, in particular, as a former commander within the radical jihadist group ISIS.An ethnic Syrian Turkman from the town of Biza’a in Aleppo city’s northern countryside, Balud originally joined the Abu Bakr Sadiq brigades, a moderate rebel faction near his hometown that received widespread support from Gulf states in the early years of the conflict. However, coming from a small, relatively unknown family, Balud failed to climb the ranks of Syria’s rebel movement as quickly as he would have liked, and as others from more prominent backgrounds regularly did. By early 2013, Balud had joined ISIS, whose ranks were staffed mostly by foreigners who couldn't have cared less about the social status of their Syrian recruits. In July 2013, Balud appeared in an ISIS propaganda video shot in the border town of Tal Abyad after the group successfully captured the city from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). In the video, Sayf appears next to an Egyptian foreign fighter addressing a room full of two dozen captured YPG soldiers, who were assembled before an ISIS camera crew to officially repent for having joined an armed faction that ISIS’ leadership described as being “at war with God.”Over the next several years, Balud’s star continued to rise, as the commander attained a level of status within ISIS that would have been unattainable in other rebel groups. Despite the large-scale defeat of ISIS across northern Syria at the hands of the YPG in 2016 and 2017, the cunning commander was able to leverage his history of fighting against Kurds to re-invent himself as a valuable client for another foreign patron: Turkey.By January 2018, when Turkish backed rebel forces launched “Operation Olive Branch” to take over the Kurdish canton of Afrin located in Syria’s uppermost northwest corner, Balud regularly appeared in the group’s propaganda videos as the official commander of the newly formed Hamza brigades. His status as an ethnic Turkman, a small minority within Syria whose likeness to their Turkish kinsmen across the border has pushed Ankara to grant many coveted privileges such as Turkish citizenship and sensitive leadership positions, further endeared Balud to his new patrons.According to SNA sources, Syrian rebel units now being sent to Azerbaijan by Turkey are almost exclusively led by ethnic Syrian Turkmen. “Sayf Balud is a Turkman. The Sultan Murad brigade’s commander, Fahim Aissa, is a Syrian Turkman, like Balud. Turkey only trusts factions led by Syrian Turkman to carry out these missions. These are sensitive for Turkey politically, and they don’t trust Syrian Arabs to lead them.”Turkey’s intervention in Azerbaijan is indeed sensitive. After a four-year lull in fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, fighting between the two countries erupted anew on Sunday in fighting that killed two-dozen fighters.Historically the Nagorno-Karabakh region has been internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. But in 1991 Armenian factions within the region declared themselves independent. Three years of war over the disputed territory ended in 1994 with a Russian brokered ceasefire. The newly declared Nagorno-Karabakh republic was soon occupied by Armenia, which has since maintained de facto control of the area. With the exception of four days of fighting in April 2016, Sunday’s clashes were the first major instance of renewed combat between both countries over the status of the area. Both sides accuse the other of having initiated the fighting on Sunday.Clashes continue, with dozens more casualties reported. Fighting alongside the Azeri regular forces were 1,000 Syrian rebel fighters, among them former jihadists led by ex-ISIS commander Sayf Balud. All About the OilTurkey's move to send Syrian rebels to face-off against Armenia, a longtime rival of Turkey, is just the latest in a long string of neo-Ottoman foreign adventures undertaken by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over the last 6 months. Ankara has deployed both its armed forces and Syrian proxies to crack down on Kurdish PKK and YPG forces in northern Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan throughout 2020.Turkey has also intervened in western Libya and waters throughout the eastern Mediterranean where its navy has threatened NATO allies France and Greece in an attempt to strongarm both countries and lay claim to gas reserves located within Greece's maritime borders. In Azerbaijan, Turkey is looking to demonstrate loyalty and prop up an oil-rich regime with which it has maintained close military ties since the 1994 ceasefire. Since 2005, they have launched numerous lucrative oil and gas initiatives including a pipeline that exports 1.2 million barrels of Azeri oil per day to the European Union (EU), earning Turkey upwards of $200 million in annual transit fees. In 2006, this cooperation expanded following the launch of the South Caucasus natural gas pipeline that annually exports 8.8 billion cubic meters of much needed Azeri gas to the Turkish market, a net importer of energy. In 2011, Turkey began work on an expansive natural gas production network called the Trans Anatolian Pipeline, which is projected to export 31 billion cubic meters of Azeri gas to the EU by 2026. Turkish shareholders, who own a 30 percent stake in the project, stand to make huge profits.Turkey’s push to transform Azerbaijan into a lucrative oil and gas export hub is also motivated by Ankara’s desire to come out from under Russia’s shadow. Turkey depends on Russia for 40 percent of its fossil fuels, a reliance that has forced Ankara to treat Russia as a friendly nation despite the fact that the two countries share almost no common interests. The “Southern Gas Corridor,” a term referring to the various pipelines emerging out of Azerbaijan, has been heavily cheered on by the EU, which also wants to break its dependence on Russian gas. No surprise then that Russia is on the other side in the ongoing dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.Nagorno-Karabakh is now the third theater where Russia and Turkey find themselves supporting opposite sides in an active Middle East conflict zone. In Syria, Russian support for dictator Bashar al-Assad and Turkey’s support for the country’s rebels such as Sayf Bulad and others led to direct conflict between both countries’ armies earlier this year, resulting in the death of dozens of Turkish soldiers. In Libya, the situation is reversed, with Turkey supporting Libya’s government and Russia supporting Khalifa Haftar, a renegade general and rebel leader who has sought to seize control of Libya’s lucrative oil sector and capture the capital of Tripoli. In both conflicts, Sayf Bulad and the Hamza brigades have proven extremely useful to Turkey. Thousands of the group’s fighters, including Sayf Bulad, were deployed to Libya last summer to help repel a major assault launched by Russian-backed Khalifa Haftar and in the bargain reclaim territory previously captured by the general. The Turkish backed authority in Tripoli is now safely guarded against external threats, while Turkish companies are set to gain lucrative contracts in Libya’s oil and gas and reconstruction sectors.Within this context of great power struggles, Syria's rebels, once idealistic and seeking to liberate their country from dictator Bashar al-Assad, have found themselves reduced to pawns compelled to serve as mercenaries and shock troops used by Turkey to advance its foreign policy in a world where Ankara finds itself increasingly isolated. In doing so, they find themselves led by and mixed with fighters from the most vicious jihadist group the world has ever seen.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Int'l community must demand Armenia back down in Karabakh: Azerbaijani envoy

Int'l community must demand Armenia back down in Karabakh: Azerbaijani envoy
Tumblr media
Fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces flared up again recently constituting the worst outbreak of hostilities between the two countries in years. Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Turkey Khazar Ibrahim called on the international community to enforce and demand that Armenia stop these kinds of unprovoked attacks “against the sovereign borders of another country” and respect the will of the people of Azerbaijan.
Skirmishes on the frontline between the two South Caucasus nations began Sunday. Azerbaijan said it has lost 11 servicemen and one civilian in three days of fighting. Even though a relative calm could be observed since then, the envoy in an exclusive interview to Daily Sabah expressed that he is not convinced the calm will prevail since the previous attacks were “absolutely unprovoked.”
“It was unnecessary not only for the regional stability but also for Armenia’s own interest. They knew that we never leave any attacks unanswered, and they ignored not only the lives of our civilians and servicemen, they also ignored the lives of their own people,” Ibrahim elaborated, saying that the Armenian side had more than 100 casualties.
The envoy stated that in the last few days no large-scale provocations were observed, “yet provocations did not only happen in the Tovuz region, now they have also started shooting civilian, not military installations.”
Tovuz has been the new hot spot in the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict that has been ongoing over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, has been illegally occupied since 1991 through Armenian military aggression. Tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed in the Karabakh conflict since 1991 and some 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory remains occupied to this day. International efforts to settle the conflict have stalled.
Four U.N. Security Council and two U.N. General Assembly resolutions, as well as decisions by many international organizations, demand the withdrawal of the occupational Armenian forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and seven other occupied regions of Azerbaijan.
The current skirmishes appear to be the most serious spike in hostilities since 2016 when scores were killed in four days of fighting.
“The Tovuz region is quite strategic, most of our pipelines go through that region. Also, previously we heard a lot of threats from Armenian security and military leadership – threatening to attack critical infrastructure of Azerbaijan. That should be considered when asking the question ‘Why here?’” Ibrahim said.
International concern has been heightened due to the threat to stability in a region serving as a corridor for pipelines taking oil and gas from the Caspian Sea to global markets.
Saying that Azerbaijan will never tolerate such provocations, the envoy said that Baku’s response to continued attacks would be manifold.
“Armenia is getting more reinforcements. What their goals are, is hard to say,” Ibrahim stressed, “Again, our message is clear. We have the right by the U.N. Charter for self-defense, and we will continue to exercise it.”
People of Azerbaijan determined
Azerbaijan, with more than 100,000 active military personnel, has a high defense budget thanks to its rising oil revenues and bigger population compared with Armenia; the latter is mainly outnumbered for a serious clash with Baku.
Between 2009 and 2018 Baku’s military spending totaled roughly $24 billion, according to data from the Stockholm International and Peace Research Institute while Yerevan spent slightly more than $4 billion in the same period.
Even more striking was that thousands poured into the streets in Azerbaijan, protesting the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and border clashes with Armenian troops. Gathered in front of the National Assembly building in the capital, the crowd demanded the government to declare a mobilization as they are ready to go to the frontlines and protect their motherland.
Day by day, the Azerbaijani army saw thousands of young volunteers applying for service, with the figure rising by almost 10,000 per day and the latest numbers being 46,000 as of Monday to voluntarily fight for the restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Saying the people’s reaction was highly significant, Ibrahim underlined that the government in its actions is reflecting the will of the people.
Turkey has also thrown its weight behind its close ally, condemning Armenia’s acts. Several high-level announcements and strong messages came from Turkey following the attack, as Ankara reiterated that it stands with Baku in these difficult times and warned Armenia to respect Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on Thursday met his Azerbaijani counterpart Ramiz Tahirov, as Ankara voiced concern over the tension that has been ongoing since the invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh, which turned into a conflict with Armenia’s “reckless and systematic attacks.”

‘Armenia seeks to bring in Russia’
Another major player in the region is Russia, which has a military base in Armenia and is, together with the U.S. and France, co-chair of the Minsk group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, that has tried to negotiate a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“What we see in this process is that Armenia wants Russia to be in this situation. Armenia definitely had double goals. The first was internal to deviate attention from domestic problems vis-a-vis the previous government, vis-a-vis COVID-19, which is not handled properly and the socioeconomic situation. The second purpose is definitely bringing in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and Russia,” Ibrahim pointed out.
The envoy elaborated that Armenia intentionally did not start the skirmishes on the illegally military occupied regions of Azerbaijan but rather in Tovuz, right on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which could lead to a response affecting the territory of Armenia. Therefore giving the Armenian government the possibility to pave the way to call their allies, appeal to the CSTO and Russia, its biggest member.
“Why they did it right on the border with Azerbaijan was definitely because they wanted to attract their allies into this conflict,” he underlined.
Internal problems give way to external ones
“Since (Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol) Pashinian came to power he faces probably the most difficult times. The socioeconomic situation is bad, a lot of demonstrations against the government’s handling of COVID-19 take place,” the Azerbaijani envoy stated, adding that Armenia has one of the worst situations globally in terms of the coronavirus outbreak. “They are one of the worst-hit and worst-managed countries,” he said.
With virus cases in Armenia having increased to 35,254, according to Health Ministry data, the measures undertaken to fight the COVID-19 pandemic do not seem to bring any tangible results, as the cases of infection grow every day while the state of emergency announced in March due to the pandemic was extended until Aug. 12.
As a second domestic challenge for the current government are clashes with the previous one, Ibrahim said. “The previous government has a strong base and strong financial resources as well as specific international links. The current government is new, they have polarized views and polarized positions,” he continued.
Pashinian came to power in May 2018 after spearheading massive protests that forced his predecessor to step down. Former Armenian President Robert Kocharian has been jailed for a time that he contends was political revenge by the country’s current leadership. Kocharian is one of the prominent leaders of the “Karabakh clan”: a hero of the Nagorno-Karabakh War and the disputed territory’s former head.
“When something is happening internally, the Armenian government is trying to deviate attention from internal problems to external ones,” Ibrahim said.
Referring to the Minsk Group’s works, created in 1992 to encourage a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the conflict between the two neighboring countries, Baku’s envoy voiced pessimism.
“The Minsk Group has been entitled to solve this issue for almost 30 years,” he said, underlining that despite most countries and international organizations recognizing that it is Armenia that illegally and militarily occupies the territories of Azerbaijan, despite U.N. Security Council resolutions and many international institutions demonstrating that there was damage not only to the properties of Azerbaijan but also destruction of our cultural heritage and genocidal approaches, lootings of natural resources, Minsk group co-chair countries never announced a clear position.
“I do not want to say we expect, because it is too late to say that we expect something from the Minsk group co-chairs, I think the right word is we demand justice,” he added, “Less action by the co-chairs toward the occupied territories of Azerbaijan probably emboldened Armenia to engage in more attacks on other parts of Azerbaijan.”
