পৃথিবীতে যখন অন্যায়, অত্যাচার বেড়ে যায় তখনই ঈশ্বর পৃথিবীকে কলুষমুক্ত করতে মর্তে আসেন। স্বর্গ থেকে মর্তে অবতরণ করেন তাই তাঁদের বলা হয় অবতার। দ্বাপর যুগে জরাসন্ধ, কংস, শিশুপাল এবং কৌরবগণের ন্যায় পাপীদের হাত থেকে বসুন্ধরাকে মুক্ত করতে অবতার রূপে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ। ভাদ্রমাসের কৃষ্ণ পক্ষের অষ্টমী তিথিতে শ্রীকৃষ্ণের জন্মদিন উপলক্ষে, সর্বত্র জন্মাষ্টমী এবং নন্দোৎসব পালিত হয়। ১১৩৭ সালে পবিত্র এইদিনে দক্ষিণ চব্বিশ পরগনার অন্তর্গত কচুয়া গ্রামে রামকানাই ঘোষাল এবং কমলাদেবীর ঘরে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন যুগাবতার বাবা লোকনাথ। অন্নপ্রাশনের সময় মহাসাধক ভগবান গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় দিব্যলক্ষণযুক্ত বালকটির নাম দেন লোকনাথ। ভবিষ্যতে সর্বসাধারণকে মুক্তির পথ দেখাবে এই দিব্য বালক। তাই তাঁর নাম রাখেন লোকনাথ। আচার্যের নামকরণ মিথ্যা হয়নি। শিবাবতার লোকনাথকে তিনি দেখেই চিনেছিলেন। রণে, বনে, জলে, জঙ্গলে যখনই কোনও ব্যক্তি বাবা লোকনাথের শরণ নিয়েছেন, পেয়েছেন বাবার আশীর্বাদ। অলৌকিক উপায়ে পরিত্রাণ লাভ করেছেন সমস্ত বিপদ থেকে। ছোটবেলা থেকেই বালক লোকনাথের সাধুসঙ্গের প্রতি প্রবল টান আর তেমনই ঈশ্বরভক্তি। একবার কচুয়া গ্রামে দেখা দিল প্রচণ্ড খরা। চাষবাস প্রায় বন্ধ হওয়ার মতো অবস্থা। বালক লোকনাথ বিধান দিলেন তাঁদের বাড়ির শিবলিঙ্গকে জলাভিষেক করানোর। সবার প্রথমে নমঃ শিবায় মন্ত্রে শিবের অভিষেক করেন বালক লোকনাথ। এরপর প্রায় গোটা গ্রাম ভেঙে পড়ে জলেশ্বর শিবের মাথায় জল ঢালতে। কিছুক্ষণের মধ্যেই আকাশ কালো করে ঝরতে শুরু করে অবিরাম বারিধারা। এগারো বছর বয়সে পা-দিলেই উপনয়ন হয় বালক লোকনাথের। আচার্য ভগবান গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়ের সঙ্গে খেলার সঙ্গী বেণীমাধব বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়কে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সন্ন্যাসের পথে বেরিয়ে পড়েন বালক লোকনাথ। গৃহত্যাগের পর কিছুদিন কালীঘাট সংলগ্ন অঞ্চলে ছিলেন তিন সাধক। এইসময় বিভিন্ন ধরনের সাধু-সন্ন্যাসীদের সঙ্গলাভ হয় লোকনাথ এবং বেণীমাধবের। এরপর কালীঘাট ছেড়ে আবার পথ চলা। পথে খাদ্য-পানীয়ের কোনও ব্যবস্থা নেই। আচমকা এক দিব্য পুরুষ এসে দিয়ে গিলেন কিছু দানা। সেটা খেয়েই ক্ষুধা-তৃষ্ণা মিটল সকলের। আবার পথ চলা আর তার সঙ্গেই সঙ্গেই শিষ্যদের কর্মযোগের শিক্ষা দিতে শুরু করলেন গুরু ভগবান গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়। এরপর তাঁরা এসে পৌছান এক উঁচু পাহাড়ের গুপ্তমুখের সামনে। পাশ দিয়ে বয়ে চলেছে খরস্রোতা নদী। সেই নদীতে স্নান করিয়ে শিষ্যদেরকে নিয়ে ব্রহ্মচর্য ব্রত শুরু করেন আচার্য ভগবান গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়। তপস্যা এবং কৃচ্ছ্রসাধন ফলে এক অপূর্ব দীপ্তি দেখা দিল বালক লোকনাথের শরীরে। সেইস্থানে তপস্যারত অবস্থায় নিজের পূর্বজন্মের ছবি দেখতে পান বালক লোকনাথ। তিনি জানান, পূর্বজন্মে সীতানাথ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় নাম নিয়ে বর্ধমানের বেড়ুগাঁতে থাকতেন। এরপর শুরু হয় হিমালয়ের উদ্দেশে যাত্রা। পাহাড়ের নিচে এক গুহার অন্দরে দুই সিদ্ধ পুরুষের কাছে যোগানুষ্ঠান শিখতে শুরু করেন লোকনাথ এবং বেণীমাধব। কঠোর সাধনার মধ্যে দিয়ে সিদ্ধিলাভ করেন দুই তরুণ সাধক। এরপর শাস্ত্রবিধি অনুসারে বিরজাহোমে স্থানেই শিখাসূত্রের আহুতি দিয়ে প্রবজ্যা গ্রহণ করেন লোকনাথ— হয়ে ওঠেন লোকনাথ ব্রহ্মচারী। আচার্য ভগবান গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় নতুন সন্ন্যাসীদের জনহিতকর কাজে মানবজীবন নিবেদনের নির্দেশ দেন। এরপর বারাণসীতে হিতলাল মিশ্র ওরফে বাবা ত্রৈলঙ্গ স্বামীর শিষ্যত্ব গ্রহণ করেন লোকনাথ এবং বেণীমাধব । ত্রৈলঙ্গ স্বামীর আশ্রমে যোগসাধনা শেষ করে লোকনাথ বেরিয়ে পড়েন পরিভ্রমণে। চলে যান সুদূর আরব দেশে। মক্কা এবং মদিনা দর্শন করেন তিনি। এইসময় প্রচুর মুসলমান ভক্ত তাঁর শরণে উপস্থিত হতেন। সবাইকে সাদরে গ্রহণ করতেন তিনি৷ নিজের আচরণের মধ্যে দিয়ে এই শিক্ষাই দিতেন যে, ধর্মের পথে হিন্দু মুসলমান কোনও প্রভেদ নেই– সত্যের পথই ধর্মের পথ। এরপর বাবা লোকনাথ হিমালয়ে ফিরে আসেন এবং আরও দু’বার আরব ভ্রমণ শেষ করে হিমালয়ের সুউচ্চ পর্বতরাশিতে পরিভ্রমণ করতে থাকেন। হিমালয় অবস্থান কালে সাধক বিজয়কৃষ্ণ গোস্বামী সাধনারত অবস্থায় দাবানলের কবলে পড়লে বাবা লোকনাথ বায়ুবেগে পৌঁছে তাঁকে উদ্ধার করেন। মহাযোগী লোকনাথের জীবন যেমন কর্মময় তেমনই ঘটনাবহুল। স্বল্প পরিসরে তা বিবৃত করা সম্ভব নয়। বহু আগে পার্থিব শরীর ত্যাগ করলেও ভক্তের হৃদয়ের ভক্তি আলোকিত প্রকোষ্ঠে তাঁর সদা অবস্থান। রণে, বনে, জলে, জঙ্গলে যখনই কোনও শরণাগত ভক্তিপূর্ণ হৃদয়ে বাবা লোকনাথকে ডাকবেন, বাবা তৎক্ষণাৎ তাঁকে বিপদ থেকে রক্ষা করবেন।

Religious Festival  Followers of 18th-century Hindu saint Baba Lokenath Brahmachari observe a ritual known as Kartik Brati or Rakher Upobash every Tuesday and Saturday during the last 15 days of Bengali month of Kartik (October-November) at Lokenath temples. Every year thousands of Hindu devotees gather in front of Shri Shri Lokenath Brahmachari Ashram temple for the Kartik Brati or Rakher Upobash religious festival at Barodi, Nayagonj, Bangladesh. Lokenath Brahmachari, who is called Baba Lokenath, was an 18th Century Hindu saint and philosopher in Bengal. During this religious festival, which is also known as Kartik Brati, Hindus fast and offer prayers by lighting oil lamps and candles. Throughout the country, thousands of devotees also visit temples to pray for good health. Hindu worshipers fast and pray in earnest to the gods for blessings and good health during the traditional ritual called Kartik Brati or Rakher Upobash.
