Shogun (2024) / Awaiting Kirin (2020)
There will always be war between good and evil. The evil will forever want to dominate, abuse and exploit others. The good will always want to fight back, demand justice and protect their families.
Akechi Mitsuhide (the man that inspires the character of Mariko's father) used to believe Oda Nobunaga to be the one to unify the warring states and usher an era of peace but Oda got greedy.
Akechi began to plot against Oda after he ordered the killings of monks, peasants, women and children on Mount Hiei, to send a message to his enemies of the consequences of their defiance.
At the time, Akechi was in contact with Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga). When Akechi knew that Tokugawa would be the one to unify Japan, Akechi risk his own life to remove Oda to clear the path for him.
Tokugawa laid low when Akechi overthrew Oda. When Hideyoshi (Taiko) returns to avenge Oda, he kills everyone except Tokugawa who was "neutral" when in fact he was bidding his time to take over.
Which is why in the show, Shogun, Toranaga is close to Mariko (Akechi's daughter) and is growing impatient as he wants to remove the remnants of the Taiko and Oda as quickly as possible.
Lady Ochiba (Taiko's Consort) knows of Toranaga's true intentions, which is why she fully distrust and hate him, that she could not wait any longer and push Ishido and the Council to move quickly.
[You know, it would've been cool if they got Hiroki Hasegawa to play Akechi in Shogun! I've watched several actors playing Akechi, but Hiroki Hasegawa managed to nail the conflicted character nicely!)

House of the Dragon’s “White Hart”: A History Lesson
Tumblr media
TL:DR: the usage of the White Hart is a blending of both European and Asian symbologies of monarchy. It’s very fun to unpack.
Quick note for everyone in here: Fire and Blood did not have this plot point. The White Hart only ever appeared in the first two books of ASOIAF as an alleged magical creature within Westeros. However, using the White Hart as a symbol is harkening back to hundreds of years of medieval warfare--especially considering the Ice and Fire franchise owes a lot to English medieval history.
First, for the English reference: the White Hart has notable royal heritage. To quote its Wikipedia page it was:
“... the personal badge of Richard II... In the Wilton Diptych (National Gallery, London), which is the earliest authentic contemporary portrait of an English king, Richard II wears a gold and enamelled white hart jewel, and even the angels surrounding the Virgin Mary all wear white hart badges.
Pretty straightforward, right? However, this gets additional layers when you take into account the personal history of King Richard II.
Richard II was a fore-runner in his time within the Plantagenet dynasty for culturally and politically asserting the idea of divine right--centuries even before James VI of Scotland wrote about it in his The True Law of Free Monarchies. There’s a reason William Shakespeare devoted the first play of his Major Tetralogy/Henriad to him, if only because the deposition of this king (however bad or inadequate he may be) poses massive questions regarding the justice or necessity of kingly rule altogether--if overmighty subjects can overthrow a king, what do we need a king for?
If overmighty subjects can overthrow a king, what do we need a king for? Is this not, indeed, the ultimate fate of House Targaryen? If one minor house such as the Hightowers can pervert and creep upon their authority--what does prevent other Houses from trying so? What prevents a Great House from subsequently asserting its claim--either of independence or the Iron Throne itself? The Storm Kings that descended into House Baratheon and the Stark Kings of Winter already gave us the answer in Game of Thrones.
But we go further. Let’s return to Richard II and the White Hart--and more importantly, how he turned into a tangible symbol of his political power--even at the expense of the unifying rule of the monarchy. See the Wilton Diptych:
Tumblr media
The angels here are shown wearing the badge of the White Hart. As it happens, the White Hart was also recorded to be the livery badge of an armed man serving Richard II directly. Livery badges became identifiers of loyalty to a lord or knightly household retaining a fighting man for their services--in contrast to the traditional “feudal ideal” of land, lord and serf.
This informs Shakespeare’s own creative turn of phrase in the play:
Not all the water in the rough rude sea
Can wash the balm off from an anointed king.
The breath of worldly men cannot depose
The deputy elected by the Lord.
For every man that Bolingbroke hath pressed
To lift shrewd steel against our golden crown,
God for His Richard hath in heavenly pay
A glorious angel. Then, if angels fight,
Weak men must fall, for heaven still guards the right.
--- Richard II, II.3.55-63.
Armed service and knightly duty, therefore, is now equated to financial pay, not traditional values. To once again quote from Wikipedia:
These were badges in various forms made for a leading figure bearing his personal device, and given to others who would demonstrate by wearing them that they were in some way his employees, retainers, allies or supporters. They were especially common in England in the age of "bastard feudalism" from the mid-fourteenth century until about the end of the fifteenth century, a period of intense factional conflict which saw the deposition of Richard II and the Wars of the Roses.
The Diptych is therefore an artistic representation of Richard II’s megalomaniacal assumption of royal authority: he is not only king by right of men, but also by God--to the point that angels themselves are under his personal pay--the very definition of bastard feudalism. This referred to the phenomenon of standing armies maintained not in service to the realm, but to the highest bidder--the very phenomenon that sustained and won House Lannister its hegemony (at great cost) during the War of the Five Kings. We are given a more plain yet apt description of it by Robert Baratheon himself:
Robert Baratheon : Which is the bigger number, five or one?
Cersei Lannister : Five.
Robert Baratheon : [holds up his left fingers]  Five... [clutches his right fist]  ... one. One army, a real army, united behind one leader with one purpose. Our purpose died with the Mad King. Now we've got as many armies as there are men with gold in their purse, and everybody wants something different...
There is some irony, perhaps, in that the very symbol used in the real-life perversion of unifying monarchy is the one used to highlight the purity and royal majesty of the pre-Conquest kingship(s) of Westeros. However, there’s another straightforward usage of the idea of the “symbolic beast showing itself to the rightful ruler of the realm”.
Enter the Japanese kirin / Chinese qilin ( 麒麟 ).
Tumblr media
The kirin is more like a mystical hodgepodge creature, not unlike an East Asian dragon. However, it is a matter of traditional folklore that the kirin is supposedly only shown to a strong warrior or ruler who promises to eventually unite a torn realm.
This very plot point pops up in a number of Japanese popular fiction involving the notorious Warring States/Sengoku Period of Japan--from something as straightforward as the 2020 NHK Taiga Drama Awaiting Kirin (Kirin ga Kuru), which portrays the tragic dream of the Ashikaga Shogunate and Akechi Mitsuhide to return to samurai valor--much as it is faced by the growing ambition of the relative upstart Oda Nobunaga...
Tumblr media
... and even as family-friendly a franchise as Pokemon Conquest (where you seek to capture Arceus, the God of the Pokemon universe and the most kirin-like of all of then to unite a pastiche nation of the Sengoku Period in the Pokemon Universe).
All of this, then, once again casts the wasted pursuit of Viserys I and Rhaenyra’s effortless encounter with the Westerosi White Hart in greater symbolic light.
Tumblr media
Practically the whole realm supports--and perverts--the process of the hunt in order to hand and guarantee that Viserys I will capture and kill the White Hart as a symbolic good omen for his newfound male “heir” Aegon II. Yet all they have to show for it is killing a base (albeit still impressive) brown deer. Viserys can’t even kill it with own strength of body--failing, faltering, necrotic and overdrunk as he already is.
Rhaenyra, after having a night of adventure with Criston Cole and proving that they are both worthy people, not just by the titles they were granted (Princess of Dragonstone and Knight of the Kingsguard), but by their own skills, encounter the White Hart for themselves. They have just proven themselves as capable hunters (if not even better), yet they eventually decide the better of it and let this majestic beast go. They respect the omen and their connection with the Realm. Their encounter with this beast of omens shows to us, the viewers, that they are perhaps to symbolically and emotionally attach to.
And yet, all the same, we are reminded of the gut punch: this is not medieval England. This is not Sengoku Japan. This is not real life, history or current. This is Westeros--where the worthiest are not granted power save what they can scrounge for themselves. Where the best intentions and attempts at peacemaking (even that of the still-kindly but increasingly-caught in the middle Alicent) are not rewarded with gratitude. Where the crows will feast on corpses because the high lords play their game of thrones. This is the Westeros at the eve of the Dance of the Dragons--where armies bought by the gold and steel of great houses will fight and die and burn in the name of loyalty to two competing claimants--one of whom was once the Realm’s Delight. Yet this still-hopeful princess is forced to go up against a realm that Rhaenys Targaryen aptly said would “sooner put itself to the torch” than accept a woman’s rule.
This is not real life. But it is a mirror of the ugly histories of men, of feudalism and the world that took us centuries to move away from, and yet still seem to be enthralled by in our fantasies that we inadvertently bring them back to the real world.

Recalling the strange memories of which Spike spoke after Eclipse had joined the Royal Sisters next to the Heart, Light wondered what the threat the Young Dragon remembered could be, or what it meant that the Crystal Royals had to ask for help from old and new friends; but though they still held on to hope, Light figured they would not be considered a friend to Shining or Cadance for a long time.
When Celestia noticed her magic was acting up again, she carefully placed Light's sword by the door to the Hall before the trio stepped inside, where the rest of the group was gathered, but scattered around the entire room, silently awaiting their arrival; and after Nox had helped Light take a seat on the couch, next to Eclipse, she walked over to her Mother, who was quietly speaking to Celestia.
The Hall fell silent, save for the nigh inaudible whispering from the Equestrian Royals standing to the side, as every other being was comforting another, not uttering a word as they held close their loved ones; but as Light looked around, and saw how dearly they all cared for each other, no matter how exhausted they were, a bittersweet smile grew upon their face as their eyes started to well up.
In turn, Light closed their eyes as they gently laid their head on the back of the couch, trying to hide the tears they shed as they waited for either Shining or Cadance to start asking them a myriad of questions about everything they had been up to; but before their mind could delve too deep, they felt something small hop onto the couch next to them, before it gently started sniffing their hoof.
After Light discreetly wiped away their tears, they looked down at the small Pink Pup next to them, which was excitedly wagging Its tail and tapping Its paws as It looked back up at Light; and though Light did not understand why the Pup seemed to be so happy to see them, since they had never spoken to the little Diamond Dog, as they gently pet the Pup's head, their smile slowly grew warmer again.
The nigh utter silence in the Hall was broken when Light started chuckling endearingly at the sight of the Pink Pup, which was rapidly tapping Its leg on the couch, wearing a silly smile on Its face, as they gently scratched Its neck; but Light made sure to be especially careful with the small Pup, as it fit under just one of their hooves, and they feared that even the tiniest move could hurt It.
When the Pup started to shy away from their hoof, and put Its own paws on their legs, Light figured that It no longer wanted any scratches, so they carefully put their hooves to their sides, and laid their head on the couch again; but when the Pup hopped onto their lap, and tried to grab the scroll that Boom sent them, Light asked the Pup what it was trying to do, to which it just quietly whined.
For a brief moment, Light thought they were able to understand the Pink Pup, but since they did not know what to say, as they were trying to figure out if It had truly tried to answer their question, they merely stared at It in silence; but they only grew ever more confused when they heard Sunburst chuckle, before he weakly, yet kindly asked Eclipse to move aside, as he wished to talk with Light.
With a warm smile on their face, Eclipse nodded to both the Young Wizard and the Kirin, and got up, but before they could head elsewhere, Spike whispered that it might be nice if they brewed some tea for everyone; but as they left the Hall to allow Sunburst and Light to talk, Spike worriedly looked at his older Brother and former Dragon-sitter, before he quickly, yet nervously, ran after Eclipse.
From the gentle and safe embrace of Starlight, Sunburst asked Light if they needed any help to ease their mind, as he figured that they were quite stunned to find the Pup was seemingly able to speak; and after Light nodded to him, Sunburst asked them what the Pup wanted to grab, to which Light held up Boom's scroll, but before they could show it to Sunburst, the Pup snatched it out of their hoof.
For a moment, Light was upset, until they noticed the Pup was wagging Its tail more than before…

Silvermoon, the home of the Sin'dorei, the very place her father once lived. Kai had spent the past few days exploring and learning as much as she could about this side of her blood line. She knew only what she had been told by others as her father never talked about the city or his family he left behind. It was funny in away, because she had always hated her father for what he had done to her.
And yet here she was now, diving into the unknown through her connection to him. Each day she spent in Silvermoon, she felt a connection to it and the people who called the city their home. Each day more and more Sin'dorei returned. Even her friends came together. Their presence has allowed Kai to feel even more at ease.
Tumblr media
When she was not busy exploring the city, meeting new people and just enjoying everything, she was studying. Books now piles around the small, but simple room she rented at one of the local inns. Books on all types of interesting things. She had found that she really had a passion for reading, for learning about so many interesting things.
Even the fine arts of the Arcane. Her mother had once been a part of the Kirin Tor, a Magi. It was hard telling if Kai had inherited any of her mothers gifted crafts. But it was something she hoped to find out. Not only did books take up space, but maps as well. Another idea that had been brought up in conversations.
Tumblr media
She glances down at the book in front of her as she smiles. Maybe one day she would become a well known cartographer. There were so many endless paths her life could take. A future she never thought she would have now lay before her. Her friends had helped her see the true worth in herself. Her conversations with them has helped her to grow as a person, to have true confidence in herself.
Closing the book, Kai puts it away and picked up her satchel. Taking one last look around her room at the inn, she grins. Opening the door, she steps out into the hallway. Another day of adventures awaited her.

Closed starter — @kagami--uchiha
Well into the Era of Peace, it was not often did Kazuo call upon Kagami for his servitude. He was not a man who abused his power over others, and he made that well known with the man whenever he had signed the contract.
However, the times that he did call, he did not waste the Uchiha's time with small talk nor useless cajoling. Per binding agreement, he was owed a body and his contacts made him acutely aware that he may not have access this body for all too long, should he let him slip his mind.
Not that Kagami left his mind much. After all, he is the only one who was in blood debt to him.
Waiting outside Akio's lavish courtyard, the tall Kirin awaited for his loyal puppet to appear, scroll in his hand ready to delegate instructions.

Japanese Period Dramas
Seeing how many people love Shogun, I think it's a waste that many existing similar Japanese period dramas such as these cannot be found on streaming sites like Netflix, Disney, Hulu, Fx, HBO, etc.
Top Left : Sekigahara
A depiction of the historical Battle of Sekigahara between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. The events which inspires James Clavell's Shogun in his depiction of the civil war between Toranaga (inspired by Tokugawa) and Ishido (inspired by Ishida).
Top Right : Awaiting Kirin
A historical biopic of Akechi Mitsuhide. The character that inspires James Clavell's Shogun in his depiction of Mariko's father . He served the dictator Oda Nobunaga (Goroda in James Clavell's Shogun) before Akechi betrays and kills Oda.
Bottom Right : Baragaki : Unbroken Samurai
Set in the 19th century, follows the life of Toshizo Hijikata, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi and fought against the Meiji Restoration. The historical character, Jules Burnet, that inspires Tom Cruise's character in The Last Samurai, appears briefly in this.
Bottom Left : Yae no Sakura
This historical biopic follows the life of Yae Niijima who led the defense of Aizu alongside women warriors like Takeko Nakano who fought till the death against the Imperials during Boshin War, after the male family members and warriors are dead or injured.

Heyoooo! I'm Layla, again, or a stupid mizutsune hehe. I readed my last request and, omg, your work is BEAUTIFUL! I was thinking about, what if the rider/leia and kyle go to search a Velkhana egg but they find an Oroshi Kirin egg (based in reality xd)
Hello!! I like the name XD who doesn't like mizutsune? And THANK YOU!💖 Congrats on your Oroshi find XD I hope you enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This Happy Little Accident
You and Kyle are in search of a rare velkhana egg, but find something else just as precious instead.
Tumblr media
"You can trust me when I say that I saw a den earlier! Barely noticeable in the snow." You told Kyle as you guys trudged, well, Kyle trudged and you rode happily from the back of Ratha through the snow, which was at least knee deep.
You don't need me to tell you that your blonde companion was having no fun.
"You know, you could just ride on Ratha with me. You've done it before." You said to Kyle as you turned your whole body, now sitting backwards in the saddle.
"That was one time. Remember, when the world was at stake? I don't need to ride a monster. I'm a hunter." He said gruffly, and you brushed off his attitude as you knew he was just grumpy from all the cold and snow.
So, you slowed Ratha down a bit just so he could keep up.
But as the den became closer and closer through the blinding white snow and tiny flurries that were falling from the sky, a familiar call sounded through the air. Both you and Kyle stopped walking. Slowly turning around, you guys saw the small blue bird wyverns running up over the snowbank.
"We can take them." You said, and Kyle looked down at his body in mid-snow. He winced.
But just as you said that, a great baggi showed up. It snorted, reminding you guys of its sleep-inducing spit. Immediately, it called out again and more baggi appeared. They began to circle you, and you guys began to sweat.
"Or not." You said sheepishly. The monsters began to hiss as did Ratha. It was an absurd amount of bird wyverns, and you guys could sense that you were outnumbered. Suddenly, Kyle was on the back of the saddle, clinging to you.
"I've changed my mind! Let's ride!" He shouted and immediately Ratha unfurled his wings and took to the skies. The baggis and their leader cried out as their prey got away. But now that Kyle was riding Ratha with you, it was much easier to fly to the den.
"Our prize awaits!" You shouted in glee and Kyle just tensed up as the rathalos dove down.
Soon, you guys reached a crystal den that was practically glowing and well hidden amongst the snow and rock. When you guys entered, it was a lot easier to walk without the deep snow, and the cold was more noticeable.
"If the velkhana is here...?" Kyle prompted you, hoping to hear a plan.
"Then we fight." You said and Ratha huffed in agreement as you grabbed your weapon. Kyle could only nod, seeing no other way around it, as he got his bow ready. The two of you guys walked deeper into the den, your footsteps echoing throughout the cave.
There were countless other monsters in your way as you guys fought your way to the heart of the den. You knew that it could be much worse, but a close encounter with a rajang is pretty hard to beat. Soon, after some more close encounters, you guys finally saw the nest, which was completely covered in bedding.
"No elder dragon in sight." Kyle whispered, peeking out from behind a rock, but you were already running towards the nest and digging through it in search of your beloved velkhana egg.
"Y/N! Wait!" He whisper-shouted at you, but you were deaf at the moment. You were looking through practically the entire nest, but there was no velkhana egg in sight. All your hopes were beginning to fade until your hand brushed against the shell of the only egg you found.
But it was no velkhana. It was still an elder dragon egg with mixes of dark and light blue.
"Let's go!" Kyle hissed as he began to hear the sounds of something big getting closer. You heaved the heavy egg into your arms before waddling back towards him and Ratha. Kyle observed the egg and your downtrodden face, and he knew that you didn't find what you wanted.
"Still looks like a good egg." Kyle tried to be supportive, and you smiled a bit. He was right. An elder dragon is still an elder dragon. Now you guys had to make the trek back to Kuan, being oh so careful not to get in any fights and hurt the egg.
Soon, you guys made it back, and it was time to hatch the egg.
"Wonder what it'll be..." The hunter mused and you nodded in agreement. You knew it wasn't a velkhana, but other than that, you didn't really know what you were hatching. And after raising your kinship stone, the egg hatched to reveal an elder dragon you weren't expecting to see today.
"That's an Oroshi Kirin!" You exclaimed in glee as you noticed the dark blue markings and purple mane of the kirin species. It stood up on shaky legs before neighing a bit, shaking its head back and force, its little tail swishing around.
"That's awesome!" Kyle congratulated you, a grin on his face. Despite his discomfort throughout the whole adventure, he was glad to be a part of this moment now.
You were on your knees, petting the tiny monstie as it nuzzled you in delight. You were pleased, giggling as you felt your fingertips grew cold from the touch of the elder dragon's skin.
"I'll take good care of you...M/N." You said with a grin.
"You'll get a velkhana next time." Kyle said while placing a hand on your shoulder for a second. But you just shrugged.
"If I got my velkhana, I wouldn't have met M/N." You simply said with a smile, and Kyle had to roll his eyes at your sappiness. Sometimes you got too sentimental and attached to things. But he had to admit that he was impressed that you found this elder dragon.
And don't worry, you'll get your velkhana soon enough. But in the meantime, you have a strong elder dragon with you.
