#au where krolia stays
Text
“Thank you, for staying.”
She looks at him curiously after he says it. It seems out of the blue, random. She’s not surprised that he’s brought it up — she’s been expecting the conversation, ever since Tex’s shoulders started to hunch and a furrow appeared in his brow whenever she held little Yorak.
…Fine.
Little Keith.
Honestly, she expected this conversation to happen sometime in the dead of night, when neither of them could sleep and worries preyed on their minds. Not when she and Keith were playing in the mud.
“I didn’t think the choice would be as easy as it was,” she confesses, flicking a glob of mud at Keith’s chubby little cheeks. He giggles, throwing a glob back at her with his meaty little toddler hands. The sound makes both her and Tex smile.
“…Was it easy? It didn’t look easy. You looked troubled, for a long time.”
Krolia hums, taking her time to form an answer. Tex is right, she wasn’t being quite truthful. It was a difficult decision to make, with a lot of consequences she will live with for the rest of her life. Namely the fate of the universe. She has the Blue Lion’s location. She — and Tex — are the sole protectors of it, now. The responsibility they hold is enormous. Because she stayed, she has no support. Should she fail, the universe will die.
“I never intended to stay on Earth.”
Tex nods. “I know. You had a mission.”
“You were a very interesting distraction to that mission,” Krolia says with a smirk.
“Don’t I know it, sugar,” he says with an equally wolfish grin. “I had fun distractin’ you, that’s for damn certain.”
Krolia laughs, shaking her head at his wink. Keith laughs, too just because they’re laughing — he’s such a joyful child. Krolia loves him so much. She drags him towards her by the ankle, smothering him with muddy kisses the second he’s close enough. He babbles at her very seriously in response, putting his dirty hands on either side of her face and looking directly in her eyes. Krolia nods along dutifully to all his baby-speak, because she’s sure he’s telling her something very important.
Suddenly, a lump starts to form in her throat. She looks at this beautiful baby who looks just like Tex in every way but has her eyes, big and purple and inhuman, who babbles happily to her every day and reaches for her when he cries. It hits her, right then and there, all of a sudden, that she almost left this baby behind. She almost abandoned him. Her son. Her child.
“Shh, Mama, shhh,” baby Keith coos, patting her on the head, and it’s then that Krolia realises she’s crying.
“I couldn’t leave him behind,” she whispers. Her bottom lip trembles as a sob builds in her throat. “I have a duty. To him and to the universe. To protect him, and all little children like him, from that — from that monster. But I can’t —” she chokes on a sob, and cradles Keith to her chest. He goes willingly, still trying to soothe her. “He’s my baby, Tex.”
Her husband’s big arm wraps around her shoulders, and he pulls her into his side, despite all the mud.
“I know, sweetheart,” he says, pressing a kiss to her hair. “I know. I know. It’s okay.”
She holds her family, the little family that she built with her own two hands, and cries, but not because she’s guilty. She’s relieved. As hard of a choice it was, she knows she made the right one. She thinks of her son and her husband and their tiny house. She thinks of playing with Keith in the mud and kissing Tex on quiet mornings, and she knows that she will not screw this up. Not for anything in the world — she will protect her family until her dying breath.
And for that, she is grateful.

Rookie son
Tex has a son who is small, and skinny, and his wrists look so fragile that Tex thinks he could snap them if he’s not careful… and yet, Keith is faster than any man in the unit, he can carry two people back to safety in a single trip and lift beams larger than Tex himself.

Supremely disappointed that there wasn't a #showAU tag for #Keithtober this year, but anyway! have a Show AU!
And Happy Birthday Keith!!! Here’s an au where Tex survives and raises Keith!
・㉨・)っ♡
Sure, there's a chance that even with his dad alive Keith would still want to join the garrison, but I also like the idea of him choosing to stay closer to the desert (and blue!)
Here are some things I was thinking about this AU:
-There is one universe where Tex died in a fire, but in THIS universe he survives the fire.
-His brush with death makes Tex aware that he needs to have a larger support for his child, so he makes some changes: he takes more desk time whenever possible, and forges deeper bonds with his fellow firemen; Keith now has half a dozen different godfathers who could take him in if Tex ever falls in the line of duty.
-With his father alive Keith has the chance to learn who (and what) his mother is, where she is and most importantly, what his father is protecting in the desert.
-Keith reasons that should anything happen to his dad, the keeping of the Blue Lion would fall on him, and it'd be difficult to do that if he's stuck in a military school; instead of going to the Garrison he decides to stay and become a fireman.
-There might have been a row at some point because of this (since Keith had said over and over how much he wanted to become a pilot before), but Keith is stubborn and got his way. Besides, if he really wanted to, there's always flight simulators.
-With Tex alive Keith never loses his alien roots. Tex knows enough galran to at least read the controls of a spaceship, and he passes this knowledge to Keith.
-Tex also gives Keith his mother's knife, not just for sentimental reasons, but also because Krolia showed him how to receive and send signals with it.
-Keith grows up in the desert, he still has poor people skills but he’s less conflicted about them; he also has a few quirks here and there that don't look entirely human (like the super strenght), but Tex assures him "your mother used to do that too" and therefore he's more confortable on his skin.
-Keith still aced the flight simulator during Shiro's visit to his school; he never steals Shiro's car but neither does he accept the offer to join the Garrison. Their friendship might develop after Shiro's continuos tries to recruit Keith.

Less of a full fic, more of a rough sketch of a concept.
Been thinking about a modern au where Tex & Krolia never married. They come to a point when Keith is 7 where their romantic relationship has come to its natural end but they're still best friends and want to raise Keith together so the farthest Tex moves is a different bedroom.
A few months later he starts dating the divorced mom of an 11yo boy at the same time as Krolia goes on a business trip where she meets a young widow with a 6yo daughter.
Tex & Krolia refuse to leave Keith behind to bounce between them, so they stay in the house, moving their new partners in with them. It's a bit of an adjustment, but the kids all get along and are acting like siblings in no time.
These are the relationships Tex & Krolia know will last, and a few months before their double wedding, they and their fiancees sit down with a lawyer, formally adopting each other's kids and signing co-parenting agreements. Shiro, Keith, and Romelle do not understand why they need to have some paper telling them they're siblings when it's something they already know.
Years later, when Lance tries to warn Keith about his own family, Keith just remind him that he grew up with two siblings and four parents, how bad could it be?

side effect of writing AU fic is that sometimes when you work on one, your brain latches onto a single line or a particular aspect and asks itself "yeah, but what if...?" and then sometimes it just holds onto it forever until you're forced to at least talk about it.
which is where I'm at with the runaway paladin AU and the line of thought that asks "yeah, but what if Keith really was an orphaned port brat trying to avoid conscription". He grows up on the fringes of the Empire's territory, moving from port to port, never staying in one place for very long. He knows in his bones that no matter what anyone says, what the Galra Empire is doing is wrong, but all he can do to strike back is getting into petty trouble.
He picks fights, he steals, he learns to make improvised explosives that might not have a lot of firepower but can still cause headaches. He's always on the move, picking pockets and joining underground fight rings to make money. He's so very, very tired. He slips up and gets caught once, but the officer who catches him just ends up taking care of his injuries and buying him a meal instead of turning him in. He keeps running into Lieutenant Krolia after that, despite his best attempts to avoid her. Doesn't matter if she's nice to him. All high-ranking Empire officers are the same at their core.
(Krolia, meanwhile, is seriously contemplating recruiting this kid for the Blade of Marmora.)

Author Note: This is pre-canon, where the Blades are raising Keith and Pidge at headquarters, and the two are best friends with Regris, who is just a bit older than Keith. In this au, Keith is four, and Pidge is one. This is also Thulaz.
"The Pack's Kits"
Most of the time, Antok could be found in one of the training halls, either helping recruits refine their skills or working on his own. The rest of the time, he could be found in his office. That all changed four deca-phoebes ago, when Krolia came back from a mission with a tiny kit. When the pack met the tiny kit, they couldn't help but fall in love with him. Keith was part Galra and a future member of the Blades. As he grew, he became fast friends with another kit on the base named Regris, whom Krolia had basically adopted.
Three years after coming back with Keith, Krolia had found a baby in an abandoned space craft that looked like it had been attacked by either space pirates or the Empire. Either way, the adults of the space craft were either dead or taken as hostages/slaves but had hidden the baby well enough that she had been spared. Krolia couldn't leave the baby alone as she could die, so she had taken her back to headquarters. Kolivan almost face palmed when she appeared with the tiny baby. He, of coursed, let the baby stay, especially after the rest of the pack met her. When Thace and Ulaz immediately adopted the kit upon seeing her, Krolia smiled. Since they were all pack, she had no problem with her pack brothers being the baby's dads.
All three kits were really close, even though the baby was only a deca-phoebe old and slept a lot. Thace and Ulaz named their baby Pidge, when meant 'fierce one' in Galran. They could tell that she was going to live up to her name when she defended her "brothers." Some of the Blades at headquarters didn't like half-breeds like Keith and Regris and tended to push them around, especially when the adults of the pack weren't around. However, the last time one of them was picking on Regris, Ulaz was nearby, and Pidge had been secured in a hip bag hanging off his belt. Ulaz had nearly grabbed the Blade member, when he suddenly let out a screech. Pidge had grabbed two handfuls of the Blade's thick fur and yanked hard. Ulaz composed himself and simply said, "Let that be a lesson to be more open to other beings. Even the smallest among us have hidden talents."
Pidge had released her grip and settled back into the pouch, Ulaz gently stroking her hair as he checked on Regris. Each member of the pack looked after Pidge, generally carrying her in a hip bag as it allowed their hands to be free, which helped when all three kits wanted held. Regris tended to cling to the back of whichever pack member was nearby and Keith liked being held with his head tucked underneath their chin. Even though they loved every member of their pack, each kit was especially close to one member (aside from Krolia). Regris was close to Antok, Keith was close to Kolivan, and Pidge was close to Thace and Ulaz (equally). However, that didn't mean that the kits didn't spend time with the other adults in the pack.
One quintant, while Thace was in charge of everyone, Pidge had decided she wanted to be with Antok, who was going over some reports in his office. He gently scooped up the tiny kit and slipped her into his pouch with a gentle pat on her head and brought his tail over so the kit would be entertained. It wasn't the first time, she had played with his tail. The first time she had batted at his tail when it swayed in front of her in the nest. Ever since then, he had let the kit play with his tail.
Since Antok was watching Pidge, Thace could actually play fight with the two other kits. Keith and Regris were ecstatic to fight with another pack member and worked together to try to bring him down. Thace was having so much fun with the two older kits that he forgot to tell his mate that their kit was with Antok, so when Ulaz walked in on his break to see Thace being pinned by Keith and Regris but with no Pidge in sight, he growled. "Where's my kit?"
"Our kit wanted to be with Antok." Thace grinned. "She's probably playing with his tail."
Ulaz came closer to Thace, who was completely pinned by the two kits, who were chirping in triumph. He knelt down and nuzzled Thace's head. "I apologize, my mate. You know how protective I can be."
Thace nuzzled him back as best he could. "You're forgiven, 'Laz. Now, let me see if I can beat these kits in another round of play fighting."
Keith and Regris scrambled off Thace and grinned widely, ready for another round of playing. Ulaz wisely stayed away from the trio as he made his way to Antok's office. As much as he trusted his mate, he needed to see his kit for himself. He softly knocked on the door before easing it open.
"Shhh."
Ulaz stopped short at being shushed by the large Blade. His eyes immediately found his kit tucked into one of Antok's hip bags, asleep. Ulaz smiled and nodded. His kit was safe and sound and utterly adorable, snuggled up against Antok's tail.

So, I realized that I just leapt into the deep end with the Quantum Abyss Omegaverse AU and literally explained nothing. Read at your own discretion before starting the fic as this does have spoilers. Background info:
Klance was established pre-Kerberos, but Keith's depression and later expulsion led to their breakup. They talked it out after getting settled into the castle and decided to give their relationship another shot.
The war is going slower than in canon, and by this point, they've been out there for about a year.
Keith still joined the Blades after going through the trials, but takes fewer missions, preferring to stay with the team (and more importantly, his Alpha). They do refer to each other that way, but aren't mated, as much as Pidge says that they may as well be.
Shiro survived the battle with Zarkon, although he was out of commission for several weeks due to his injuries. So the lion switch happened, but temporarily, and went back to the original pairings after Shiro recovered.
The timeline is changed around a bit. Zarkon is still alive, Lotor is, obviously, still imprisoned on the castle, and the Kral Zera hasn't happened, even though Keith has found Krolia and they've found the secret Altean colony. Also, they crashed their ship rather than it being destroyed by the space spiders. I already know how that's going to go, including the fact the at this point, Allura hasn't yet been to Oriande, although the Sincline ships have been made.
All this with ABO dynamics and the part where Keith is currently almost 5 months pregnant.
Side note: I decided that the Blades uniforms conform to the shape of the wearer much like the Paladin armor, so that's why it hasn't been an issue.

Hey, I saw your post about a head canon world where Lotor becomes the black Paladin, and it made me wonder how you feel about a different head canon, one that I personally don’t really have but find very interesting- the head canon of Lotor as a Blade of Marmora agent. How do you think that would change the plot of Voltron, and what do you think would happen with that? Just curious.
P.S. When’s the next chapter of Adrenaline Rush coming out? I love it so much and I’m at the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens-
Hi, anon. Thanks for the note! I’ve definitely thought about Lotor as a Blade before, and a while back last year, I posted a little drabble called The Awakening introducing that plot bunny. You can read it here as well as access links for other BOM Lotor stories!
Outside of that drabble, I do think transitioning Lotor to be a Blade pretty heavily shifts VLD. There’s probably a million interesting ways a person could write such a VLD AU, but I guess my initial thoughts would be something like this (heads up, this is a monster outline for a whole series rewrite):
After the disastrous end of the mining colony, Zarkon doesn’t just exile Lotor. He imprisons Lotor with the idea that Lotor either submit to “remedial training” or death.
When Lotor chooses death over kneeling before his father again, the Blades are convinced that Lotor is in fact truly different from Zarkon. Kolivan moves in to save him, offering him a secondary life in the shadows as an operative.
Lotor rises to the rank of Lieutenant within the BOM and helps establish a surviving Altean colony. In doing so, he discovers the legends of Oriande. He spends his time convincing the Blades that there is deeper knowledge of the universe they could use to defeat Zarkon and his witch.
The Blades share that they are aware at least Blue Lion survived the destruction of Altea, and they suspect that more Lions still exist. Kolivan orders Lotor to stand down from pursuing Oriande in favor of uncovering the location of the remaining lions.
Lotor ends up working with Krolia to better understand how she came to find the Blue Lion on Earth. He grows to see her as something of a mother figure or role model and is aware that she had to leave behind a mixed-race son of her own to ensure the war would never reach Keith.
Lotor warns that the pull to know one’s own heritage is significant, and that her half-human son will likely go to dangerous lengths to know the truth, especially if his more Galran attributes arise.
Krolia assures that her son’s father would keep the truth a secret and that Keith had no known signs of Galran blood.
Krolia missed that her son could sense things a normal human couldn’t.
All of that would be background information to be revealed in time.
VLD s1 would still pick up with Keith sensing the energy of the Blue Lion.
Lotor has by this time identified the location of the Red Lion, also following legends of a Lion Goddess upon Arus to suspect that perhaps more may exist on that planet. But Sendak has also picked up coordinates for the Red Lion.
Kolivan orders Lotor to stay hidden and send out squadrons to extract Red Lion, only for the extraction to fail and for the Red Lion to fall officially into Sendak’s hands.
At this time, Shiro crash-lands back on Earth. Sendak’s squadrons were also trailing his escape. The witch Haggar turns her eye to Earth and senses ancient power—the Blue Lion.
Kolivan is at a crossroads to determine next best steps. Lotor convinces him that it’s better to let Red Lion go temporarily than to lose even more to Sendak. Lotor argues that an elite squadron be sent to Earth to extract Blue Lion, and that he receive approval to pursue his lead for a possible lion on Arus.
Kolivan approves Lotor’s plan and realigns assets to Earth and to Lotor’s extraction team. Some Blades on Lotor’s extraction team are in fact Alteans and other survivors of other planets they have rescued over the years. Backup teams suit up for battle.
Krolia volunteers to lead the Earth squadron. She fears that her son and his people may be in danger.
Hunk, Pidge, and Lance follow Keith and Shiro to the Blue Lion. But at this time, the Galra have already discovered the Blue Lion. Krolia is desperately attempting to fend them off, but the Galra had taken out several of her squadron members, and she herself is injured.
The Galaxy Garrison recognizes that alien squadrons have landed on Earth, endangering several cities with their warfare. In fear that Earth is under invasion, they activate various militarized assets to contain the problem and capture any aliens, dead or alive.
Keith, Shiro, Pidge, Hunk, and Lance all panic, realizing they’re about to be caught in an alien war, the firepower of their trigger-happy superiors, and the biggest national security breach in human history.
Krolia meanwhile, desperate, tosses some weapons over to the humans and begs for their help. She tells them that keeping this Blue Lion out of the hands of Emperor Zarkon is imperative to universal safety.
Keith and Shiro move in to assist Krolia. Pidge is trying to contact Galaxy Garrison about the situation, panicking in an attempt to explain that not everyone in the fire zone is an enemy. Hunk is hesitantly like, “Is this a real thing? Am I actually seeing aliens right now? Omg, is this actually a weapon? I don’t think I’m trained for this!” And Lance meanwhile is distracted. He’s sensing Blue Lion, and it’s responding to him, because out of everyone, he’s the only with the tenacity to actually get in this thing and fly it out of harm’s way.
Shiro realizes if they don’t get Krolia and her team out, the Garrison might not be so kind to her either. Once he sees Lance is able to operate controls, he agrees best thing to do is to get Blue Lion off Earth entirely.
The instant Krolia gets a good look at Keith, she realizes that he is her son and panics when she realizes she willingly begged for this boy to get involved in the battle.
Long story short, the future paladins + Krolia and the surviving Blades operatives escape through a wormhole using Blue Lion, which takes them back to the Castle of Lions on Arus. They narrowly escape both death at the hands of Galra and capture by Galaxy Garrison.
Galaxy Garrison is blaring alarms that Earth has experienced what appears to be its first true alien invasion. It recognizes that several cadets were caught up in the crossfire. They assume those cadets and Shiro to be Missing In Action and feared dead. Earth leaders convene to discuss defense strategies, in fear that this will not be the end.
Meanwhile, Lotor has already landed on Planet Arus with his team. But he soon realizes that this isn’t just the location of the Castle of Lions—it’s also housing the Black Lion’s energy force and the long-lost Princess Allura, the “Lion Goddess” that Arusians had seen through the glass of her pod.
Lotor makes the decision to wake up the princess and her Altean advisor, Coran. In fear that he would scare them as a Galran, he keeps his face mask on. He begs the princess to fly the ship to safety, as he does not know how to use a teladuv but understands what they are.
Princess Allura is very confused for a time, demanding to know who he is and what exactly is going on.
Sendak hears from Haggar that she senses new energy on Arus.
Lotor is distracted, attempting to reach Krolia and strategize a full, double-wormhole back to BOM headquarters with the Castle and Blue Lion in tow. The fight on Earth temporarily distracted Sendak, but with Blue Lion gone, Sendak is now racing his way back to the Castle’s position. Time is very limited.
Lotor stumbles a bit at the sight of Allura, who is very beautiful.
Coran is flailing about that Alfor’s plan to hide the lions is ruined—
At this time, the paladins + Krolia and team land on Arus via wormhole.
Keith is helping his mother to rush into the Castle of Lions for cover, as she is still injured.
Princess Allura is beginning to realize that Altea had been completely destroyed, and she is very distraught that Emperor Zarkon has become an unstoppable tyrant, killing and enslaving millions.
Lotor kneels down beside her and convinces her that if she can operate the castle for just a very short time, then they can save the entire galaxy and take back a Lion from Zarkon, together.
The princess senses his goodwill and agrees, pulling herself together. She admits she knows where the other lions are, as Alfor had tied her life-force to all of the Lions.
Allura is surprised to realize that Blue Lion is just outside.
Lotor’s squadron guides the paladins and company into the heart of the Castle. Princess Allura is surprised again to discover that a human named Lance had bonded with the Blue Lion so easily. She begins to search out the bond ties of the other lions and realizes they are attempting to sort through options for new paladins.
Allura helps Keith with placing Krolia in a healing pod. She senses the energy between them is quite similar, and that they are perhaps related.
The Blue Lion and other Lions communicate to Allura that they need a fresh team that can function as one immediately. A team with new perspectives, a desire to protect, and without the painful history or conflicts of interest that resulted in Alfor’s leniency with Zarkon. They hone in on the humans, and Allura sees their auras as clearly aligned with their respective lions.
She communicates to the larger team that they are in desperate need of paladins for the other lions—and that the lions have chosen these humans who were willing to defend Blue and their home world.
Lotor hesitates, having had plans for those lions that didn’t involve humans. But he acknowledges that alchemical magic is above his understanding. He glances over at Keith, catching that his scent is similar to Krolia’s—and that his prophecy of a family reunion has come true in the strangest of ways.
Princess Allura quickly sets to revealing the location of the other lions and activating wormholes for them to retrieve them.
Meanwhile, the Castle has experienced 10,000 years of rust and degradation of lesser systems. Coran and Lotor team up to fix the particle barrier, anticipating that they may need to provide backup for the new paladins. Coran and Lotor bicker over many things, and Coran warns that he can see Lotor making cow eyes at the princess even beneath his mask. Lotor vehemently denies it.
Krolia, stubbornly moving her way out of a healing pod, pleads with Allura that Keith not be chosen to pilot Red Lion—that he might find a way to go back and be safe with his father.
Allura apologizes that she is not in control of the lions and that they choose their paladins. “If Red Lion chose your son, it is because Keith can save the universe. That it’s his destiny to be a part of this fight with us.” But Allura is unsettled too, as she’s actively trying to test systems with Coran and this mysterious, masked Blade whose name she doesn’t even know yet, except that his title is Lieutenant. Meanwhile, she’s also trying to keep the wormholes open for the paladins.
The new paladins return in time for the arrival of Sendak, who still has Red Lion in his grasp.
The newly minted Team Voltron make a stand with the lions they have available to reclaim Red Lion and activate Black Lion.
The BOM forces assist in the overtake and attempt to suppress the battle from affecting locals on the planet of Arus.
Lotor realizes that Keith is in significant trouble, as Sendak is moving in protect Red Lion himself. Lotor runs to activate his own ship as backup, knowing Sendak’s fighting weaknesses.
The battle ends up with Keith struggling to connect with Red Lion while Lotor fights off Sendak.
Sendak manages to knock Lotor’s face mask loose and startles in surprise to see Zarkon’s supposedly dead son.
Lotor uses the moment of surprise to critically injure Sendak, escaping up to the Red Lion that Keith has taken command of.
All lions and teams retreat back to the Castle of Lions, which wormholes out before Sendak’s forces can catch them.
Sendak haltingly conveys to Emperor Zarkon that his son yet lives, fighting in the armor of an unknown rebel group.
Zarkon whips into a rage that his darkest shame is still alive and fighting against him.
The witch, Haggar, promises to end Lotor’s life once and for all, and to reclaim the lions for Zarkon’s glory.
Team Voltron meanwhile celebrates their first win in a panic-relief that they were able to form Voltron.
Various Blade operatives take off their masks. Some are revealed to be Alteans, including a grown Bandor and Romelle who were rescued long ago and now fight as part of Lotor’s squadron. Princess Allura and Coran are comforted greatly to know that many Alteans yet live, and that there is a colony where juniberries grow too.
Princess Allura still wants to know who the mysterious Lieutenant is who woke her up and managed to fight off Sendak.
Bandor, a big Lotor fan, nearly breaks the truth that “Lieutenant Lotor is—” and Romelle nudges him to be quiet, interjecting that their lieutenant is a very private person and that no one knows much about him.
Meanwhile, Kolivan is incredibly unhappy that Lotor has revealed himself on an active battle field.
Lotor argues that he did it to protect Krolia’s son, who was chosen to be the paladin of Red Lion—and isn’t that the more important objective?
Kolivan reassigns Krolia immediately to ensure that her ties to Keith do not interfere with Keith’s new mission. Keith still doesn’t know Krolia is his mother.
Kolivan then grounds Lotor from engaging in an active battle again, and admits that it is best if Lotor remain with Team Voltron in his own stylized armor.
Lotor asks if this is a demotion for insubordination.
Kolivan hesitates and says it’s possibly a promotion, if he can help to keep these human children alive long enough to save the universe. If all goes well, then the Blades will back Lotor’s bid at the resulting Kral Zera after Zarkon’s defeat.
Lotor hesitates, then adds, “And my secondary mission, to search for Oriande?”
“…Approved.”
Lotor then asks if it’s in fact cruel to hide from Keith that Krolia is his mother, but Kolivan convinces him that sometimes, the consequences of knowing outweigh the consequences of ignorance.
Kolivan knows that Haggar is Lotor’s true mother, but corrupted.
He fears what Lotor might do with that information.
Lotor, meanwhile, designs new armor for himself that is separate from that of the Blades.
He appears to Princess Allura, offering to help train the new paladins in the art of war if she can assist them with the spiritual aspects of connecting with Voltron.
Princess Allura accepts, but corrects him to say that she knows quite a bit about the art of war, thank you very much.
He searches her curiously and asks to see what she can do—as it is imperative she remain battle-ready herself.
The princess very casually grabs for his own sword and holds it to his throat, in a challenge for a duel.
Lotor’s lips split wide in a smile of delight. He likes this princess and her spirit.
He discovers that the princess really can hold her own, and it’s at that point he realizes he will struggle to remain objective about her in his missions.
Allura is not entirely unaffected either, fighting to maintain a level of professionalism around him.
At some point, Lotor’s cat Kova sneaks in from Lotor’s ship to the Castle of Lions. Kova is a lazy, happy cat who likes to hold a mouse in his mouth but doesn’t actually try to eat it. Princess Allura’s mice get used to be carried around in this way. Chulatt often rides atop Kova’s head.
Kova is something of a therapy cat for the whole team. He likes lots of scritches and the way Pidge rubs his belly. He often steals Hunk’s burritos and sleeps on Allura’s comfy pillow when she is busy.
Dayak, Lotor’s old governess, hears through the grapevine of Galra High Command that Lotor is in fact still alive. Kolivan and other Blade operatives track her, debating if she could possibly be turned to their side. They believe she can be a very valuable asset for future missions.
Meanwhile, it’s been a long time since Lotor had to train children.
The Castle of Lions still ends up with everyone in a food goo fight at least twice.
Shiro is suffering significant PTSD, and the reality is that this is something Lotor fights as well from his time under his father’s command. He tries to help when he can and forms a deep bond with Shiro too.
Lotor mother-hens the paladins because he made a promise to Krolia that he would keep her child safe, but soon, they all worm their way into his heart. He feels very protective of them, and of the princess, who has not yet had the opportunity even to see the colony of her people, safely tucked away in the Quantum Abyss.
Lotor activates Romelle and Bandor for their assistance in tracking down leads on the existence of Oriande or other helpful relics worth having or keeping out of the witch’s hands. Allura argues that Oriande is just a fairy tale, and Lotor argues in return that Alfor simply had to have advanced knowledge to build Voltron as he did. He begs Allura to at least be open to the possibility that more exists about Altean heritage than she ever thought possible.
Allura pauses, then quietly confesses that she is quite sure she’ll never be the alchemist her father was. That he had a gift no one else had ever seen.
Lotor grows impassioned to say that neither of them have to be limited by what their fathers did or accomplished. That they can be so much more, something different—he can feel it. He gets a little too close in saying this. Coran jumps in, noticing that Lotor’s usual strong command of Altean etiquette slips when around Allura.
In thanks for listening, Allura leaves a little juniberry flower for Lotor.
He spins it in his fingers, face in a flush over what it could mean. But he tries to stifle his emotions, knowing that the Princess of Altea would not accept an exiled son of Zarkon in such a way.
Occasionally, Lotor feels like Black Lion is watching him. He can’t tell if it’s because he’s paranoid, or if it’s because Black Lion actually knows his true parentage. He struggles to be in the same space as it, often unsettled.
Princess Allura and Shiro both notice this.
Meanwhile, Haggar uses a significant barrage of robeasts to distract Voltron while she completes building the Komar and perfecting other means of quintessence manipulation.
Haggar convinces Zarkon that Lotor is better to them alive than dead, and that if they could simply capture him again for a short time, she could turn him into Zarkon’s most loyal soldier, and undo Voltron’s advantages from the inside out.
Zarkon hesitantly approves. He demands that Lotor still be killed immediately upon fulfilling such a role, as Lotor would no doubt attempt to dethrone him.
Meanwhile, Princess Allura often catches Lotor reading up voraciously in the library of the Castle of Lions while the paladins complete their assigned training. At first, she thinks this activity has to do with Lotor’s fixation on the legend of Oriande. But then she catches him reading a book about Altean cuisines and asking for Hunk’s help in reproducing them—and she starts to suspect that Lotor’s not entirely Galran.
Occasionally, Lotor assists in BOM side-work, whether it’s breaking from the paladins to assist on an Oriande lead or helping Kolivan to unravel Galran records and codes.
Lotor has incredibly strong opinions about modulation.
Lotor is also very good at acting as a representative while Earth flails over getting in contact with its lost cadets and aliens.
He remains in communication with Krolia often, reporting on Keith’s progress. But Keith is starting to ask questions as well, about how the dagger he found in his father’s stuff one day has the same exact symbol as that of the Blades.
Krolia helps to continue funnel lost people of mixed heritage toward the Blades. As Team Voltron grows more confident in their abilities, Lotor is called away to help train new recruits named Acxa, Zethrid, Narti, and Ezor.
Keith joins along briefly because he wants to learn more about the Blades themselves and why his father would have a Blade dagger.
Lotor discusses Keith’s application for the Blades with Shiro, who tentatively agrees that training with the Blades could be a good way to start ramping Keith up with leadership skills and advanced tactical knowledge. Lotor agrees that the boy is more capable than what his mother would allow him to be.
Shiro was trained to always have a line of command in place in case someone falls. He knows he could very well fall, and Keith as his right-hand is the most worthy in the group to take on the mantle of Black Lion in that case.
Lotor and the Blades agree to train Keith as a Blade, in preparation for a future where Shiro might not be able to fulfill his duties.
Keith sees this as a serious honor and doesn’t want to screw it up.
Meanwhile, Princess Allura discovers a journal from her father, with one of the final notes mentioning that Zarkon had declared he was to have a son soon, and that his chosen name would be Lotor—his day of birth to be on the fourth quintant of the 11th phoebe.
Allura shakily realizes that Lotor’s eyes are Zarkon’s eyes even if they are blue. She keeps her discovery to herself, in surprise that Lotor had so firmly denied his father, and out of respect that he has not willingly shared this history.
Meanwhile, Lotor keeps eyeing the Black Lion, then Shiro, wondering exactly why Shiro is so insistent about a replacement.
Shiro hesitantly admits that Black Lion has started sending him visions—that something is wrong on the astral plane, and that it will likely take everything Shiro has to burn it out.
Lotor, fearful, goes to Allura and demands to understand more about the Black Lion, admitting that he’s felt watched by it.
Allura hesitates to admit the old history that Black Lion was once piloted by Zarkon, but that it should not be affecting Shiro’s connection with the lion…unless Zarkon were still somehow connected.
Lotor recalls that Shiro was missing his bayard—that this could be significant if it were still in Zarkon’s hands.
Cue a wild crash of shenanigans involving Haggar crashing in with Komar to drain Voltron while Zarkon attacks the Black Lion to take it over, while various forces of Sendak hone in on Lotor as an asset to capture for Haggar’s experimentation.
In the insanity, Lotor is captured.
Princess Allura, fearful that her team is breaking apart, unleashes a level of alchemical power that digs deep into her connection with Voltron and far outpaces any retaliation Haggar was expecting.
The Komar powers down, and Zarkon loses his connection to Black Lion, with Shiro overpowering him.
Haggar digs deep into Lotor’s mind, attempting to plant a dark entity within him. She extracts memories of his attempts to find Oriande.
Lotor might not have magical abilities, but his cheeks begin to glow with his Altean marks as he concentrates deeply on Blade and Altean practices for preserving the mind. But Haggar is relentless, and evermore curious about his marks.
He realizes he might have to die to protect Oriande and Team Voltron, in the way some Blades have gone before to protect the whole.
His fears do not pan out, as Team Voltron and Allura rescue Lotor from imprisonment, with help from the Blades. Allura is carrying Lotor out as the paladins provide cover. Zarkon is roaring that he will ensure his son dies the worst death possible for his treason.
Lotor is genuinely shaken for the first time since the Blades recovered him from Zarkon all those years ago. His secret is out for the whole of Team Voltron. Allura tries to comfort him that it’s alright, and that they would never leave him behind.
He looks up, and Allura confirms that she knows and accepted that he’s a son of Zarkon a long time ago, and that if he ever tries to kill himself again, she’ll kill him herself. She embraces him.
He as an emotional moment because she is the first outside the Blades to accept him upon discovering his parentage.
Meanwhile, Shiro regains the black bayard in a sneaky trick beneath Zarkon’s nose, cutting off any of Zarkon’s remaining connection to Black Lion. But the team discovers in their retreat that Haggar has all the pure quintessence it’d harvested from Voltron—and that she hasn’t used it yet. Pidge also had hacked into the mainframe to discover that the Galra had located a transreallity comet.
During the breach into Zarkon’s flagship, Bandor and Romelle stole what they could of Haggar’s things, to keep power out of her hands. They grabbed a strange stone as part of their loot.
Cue another stream of shenanigans where Team Voltron attempts to keep the comet out of Galran hands unsuccessfully. But in the midst of that defeat, Allura and Lotor discover that the item found by Bandor and Romelle provides a map directly to Oriande.
Plot twist that Haggar had still managed to possess at least Kova and use his eyes to access insight into Team Voltron’s movements. She sees Oriande’s location and leaves for it immediately.
It’s Narti who senses something is deeply wrong with Kova and tries to alert the team.
They realize too late that Haggar has probably already reached Oriande.
They desperately wormhole to reach it, while keep Kova locked up, which is a painful thing for Lotor but necessary. Allura promises that she’ll help find a way to purge Kova of Haggar’s influence.
Lotor’s Altean marks light up just as Allura’s do as they reach Oriande.
Upon arriving at Oriande, the landscape has been corrupted entirely by Haggar. Its defense systems had degenerated over the years since no one had visited in over 10,000 years to bond with the larger life force keeping it intact. Because Haggar infused it with her own life force, it took on her personality and interests.
The White Lion is glitchy, sending both Lotor and Allura in circles around the island.
Allura and Lotor both see unnatural visions and experience harrowing dangers in an attempt to reach the summit with the temple.
Allura isn’t sure that she can gain anything from Oriande if it is so truly corrupt by Haggar. Lotor tells her that he trusts her ability to see through all things, and to discover something that could end the witch’s reign.
Oriande is haunted by phantom beasts.
Lotor chooses to remain behind to fight off those beasts while Allura climbs into the decayed temple and completes the mission. The glitchy white lion is watching him and struggles in some way to assist Lotor before its power wanes. Lotor mourns its loss as a valuable fighting partner, even if it glitched at odd times.
Allura discovers the art of healing and of infusing objects with power, but she also discovers that at the heart of Oriande, Haggar had left an imprint of some of her own self behind.
Allura realizes with a startle that she sees some of Honerva of Altea’s own memories mixed in with Haggar’s imprint. She realizes quickly that Honerva was Lotor’s true mother, 10,000 years ago.
Meanwhile, Krolia has appeared alongside various other squadrons of the Blades, in an attempt to help Voltron hold off increasing numbers of Galran forces from attempting to enter the white hole entrance of Oriande, which has gone dark.
Krolia sees Red Lion take a critical hit. She breaks rank to place herself directly in front of Keith, to protect him while he recalibrates.
In doing so, she reveals that she is so proud of what he’s capable of doing—but that he still needs to learn to watch his six.
Keith is surprised for a few ticks, but then moves to help protect Krolia too, saying that he has a lot of questions when this battle is over, like why she mothers over him so much.
Krolia cannot believe her son is actually this oblivious since she’s been trying to send him messages that she is his mother, but she agrees to talk.
Haggar has at this time returned to Zarkon’s flagship, infusing it with alchemy and the pure quintessence, coaxing the transreality comet to do her bidding to melt into molten ore and cover the flagship. This converts it to a massive transreality mecha, with Zarkon at the helm.
Voltron is at a disadvantage against the much larger, much stronger mecha.
Allura, in a last-ditch desperation, drops her hand to Oriande and activates its stone, begging Oriande to respond to her need for a second defender. The temples begin to adjust. She realizes that because Lotor had subconsciously infused part of himself in Oriande too, the resulting mecha is actually of his own design—Sincline.
The interface is slightly glitchy from Haggar, and Lotor affectionately calls it the White Lion, sensing that his friend is still somewhere in the stone. And even deeper, he senses the memories of all the Alteans who’d infused their lives into stone—resulting in him feeling a few uncorrupted memories from Honerva, before she became Haggar.
He isn’t quite sure what to do with that, but shoves the emotions down for now.
Allura and Lotor pilot the mecha out of Oriande. Because the stones are connected to the Life Givers and the Ones Who Came Before, it is interdimensional in a way the other mechas are not, even if it cannot take a heavy hit. Their addition levels the playing field
Zarkon accesses the quintessence field, discovering he can do so, and Voltron quickly follows behind.
Lotor and Allura follow to stabilize the rift before it can upset the space-time continuum, calling upon the Life Givers for help in holding the threads of the universe together.
Team Voltron manages to successfully beat back Zarkon within the quintessence field, with Allura and Lotor using Zarkon’s own energy against him in a moment of distraction.
The distraction happens because the rift creatures possessing him realize that they are back in their natural universe.
The rift creatures call in their buddies, who begin to cannibalize the great source of power in Zarkon’s mecha.
The paladins take the opportunity to fry Zarkon out of existence, taking a large chunk of rift creatures with him.
Meanwhile, Haggar is on a small ship trying to escape in the regular universe, slipping between Galran factions and Blade squadrons.
Team Voltron return and pick her up before she can run away.
The battle ceases without Zarkon to provide orders—Sendak orders a full retreat upon seeing Voltron return without Zarkon.
Post-battle, Allura performs something completely novel with quintessence. After being in the rift, she realizes she can see different motivations within quintessence. In doing so, she searches out Kova and purifies his mind of dark alchemy. Then she goes to the imprisoned Haggar and purifies out the rift creatures possessing her, who disappear on the material plane the instant they are outside a host body.
Honerva wakes up, fully confused and largely unaware of what she’s done or how much time has passed. She is very convinced that she should be pregnant with a son named Lotor, and that she needs quintessence to stabilize her pregnancy.
It takes Honerva quite some time to realize that it’s been 10,000 years, and a grown Blade named Lotor is in fact her true son.
Lotor is very hesitant with her but sees she was not in control as Haggar. He still can’t look at her. Honerva promises to find some way to make up for her past.
Allura gets to see the Altean colony, returning Honerva to it in hopes that maybe a larger group and some normality could help her recalibrate and reconnect somehow. Bandor oddly takes pity on her, his parents having died long ago. Lotor cautions to Romelle to keep an eye out on his mother, and Romelle promises she will do so.
Allura works with several others to heal and rebuild Oriande to its former glory, as a place of open learning for any who have a deep enough spiritual connection with reality to grasp its secrets. She realizes that most things in Oriande appear as gibberish otherwise to the unmagical.
The Blades and Team Voltron back Lotor for the Kral Zera, and Lotor becomes Emperor.
The human paladins get to go home and celebrate that everything is okay now. Their voices make the human governments stand down from actively firing on alien ships.
Lotor disbands his father’s enslaved planets from the empire, offering reparations and working with Kolivan, the Blades, and Team Voltron to provide assistance to those planets as they rebuild.
Some Galra remember Lotor mostly as a traitor to his father and a bad overseer of a mining colony. The Fires of Purification rise, in time with increasing concerns over how the Galra will sustain its reliance on quintessence without conquering and enslaving.
Princess Allura—now crowned Queen of the New Altean Colony—works on the strange, quite sentient Sincline mecha that she and Lotor had built. She removes any glitch left over from Haggar’s influence on Oriande and realizes that she has a mobile, self-protecting entity that is a direct connection to the Life Givers.
Allura makes a deal with the Life Givers through the Sincline mecha, that it will open the rift twice a movement for the leader of any planet, so that quintessence can be collected from the rift. In exchange, it would have the right to judge the heart of the leader and enact justice against any who abused such a position. And that its older sibling, Voltron, would continue to ensure that no one else abuse the power either in a way that would harm others.
The mecha agrees to the condition on the astral plane. Voltron softly chimes in, agreeing as well.
Lotor approaches as the first leader to test this new system. He tears up when he hears the voices of the Life Givers sing to him through Sincline and offer him a well of quintessence for his people. They ask that he one day return to Oriande so that they can embrace him.
The Galra grow to accept Lotor and his strange ways of doing things.
Lotor finds himself oddly in the same position that began his entire journey—leaning on Kolivan for guidance. But Kolivan is no longer his only ally in a sea of enemies. As a matter of fact, Lotor has deepened several bonds and made many friends.
Lotor goes to Allura and says they make a pretty good team, and that he’s feeling cute, how about they marry.
Allura says yes.
The paladins cry happily at their wedding, and for once in 10,000 years, the galaxy is united and at peace.
Dayak reappears in time for the wedding, and Kolivan reveals that she had been giving the Blades tips for how to operate in the background to get around Zarkon’s defenses, and that she had even been instrumental in Shiro retrieving the black bayard from Zarkon.
Dayak is emotional about seeing Lotor again after all this time.
She’s not the only one.
Kolivan’s eyes are twitching during the ceremony. He’s fond and protective of his operatives, but there is a lot of space dust in the air as he watches Lotor marry, remembering that fateful day he’d saved Lotor from imminent death.
Lotor one day tries to give his BOM dagger back to Kolivan, recognizing that he has not been in the field for a long time—and that managing a planet and helping with New Altea is quite a lot of work.
Kolivan gently presses the dagger hilt back into Lotor’s hand. “Once a Blade, always a Blade.”
Lotor tears up because Kolivan is probably the closest he has come to a true father figure.
Somewhere, Coran is still crying of space dust, and the paladins crash the scene to demand a beach party. Because once Team Voltron, always Team Voltron.
Krolia and Kolivan are watching over the group.
There are gratuitous laugh scenes with two mechas standing guard in the distance, gleaming in the sunlight.
The end!
(Ahhh yeah, so this was yet another unexpected and extensive rewrite of VLD, loll. I hope these long outlines don’t bother anyone asdljfsa. But I enjoyed the ask, thank you for the prompt! Also I’m still steadily trying to work on Adrenaline Rush in the background. For some reason, I’m just having some writer’s block with it. I hope to update it soon, though!)

Finding Courage
Written for the Kidge Spring Event!
Prompt 6: Edelweiss | Courage, Devotion
Summary: AU - Canon Divergence. Five years after the end of the war, Pidge finds herself wanting to go back out and see the universe with her own eyes. Luckily, she knows someone who can help with that, but only if she can find the courage to ask.
Also posted on AO3 under the username Kishirokitsune
❀ - ❀ - ❀ - ❀ - ❀
The time had come.
Pidge looked in the mirror as she ran her hands down the sides of her shirt, trying to smooth out the few wrinkles that had accumulated. She wanted to look nice, but not too nice. Lance and Hunk would notice if she was trying too hard and they would poke and prod until they were satisfied with the answer she gave, and that wasn't something she really wanted to deal with. (Shiro was likely to notice as well but at least he would be polite enough to keep it to himself.)
Which was why she'd selected a pair of jeans, her signature green shirt (at least according to Lance), and her nicer lab coat that didn't have oil stains all over it. And while for most of their Team Voltron get-togethers she would forgo the lab coat for something nicer, she had plans to drop by the hangar where Project Lionheart was in the works to grab a few things from the lab she shared with Matt.
Text appeared at the bottom of her glasses.
Matt: I leave in 10 minutes if you want a ride.
Pidge pressed her finger to the right side of her frames. “Send message: I'll be down soon.”
Her new glasses were a labor of love that were nearly five years in the making. She'd spent countless nights trying to link it to her computer and then to get the voice recognition to work and then to devise a lightweight battery that would both hold a charge for a minimum of twelve hours while also having the capability of being wirelessly recharged. She'd wrangled Matt and Hunk into helping her, which sometimes involved 2 am conversations when she couldn't sleep because an idea wouldn't leave her alone, but she needed someone's brain to pick and see if she was crazy or on the right track.
She still had a hundred new ideas to try out for it, but for the moment it was the perfect way for her family to contact her when she was eyeballs deep in some new project. (Not to mention, it was also remarkably helpful in displaying measurements and any other schematics when she needed them.)
Pidge slung her bag containing her laptop over her shoulder and then headed downstairs to join Matt and tell her parents they were headed out.
Colleen pulled her in for a tight hug, her eyes glimmering with unshed tears. “I'm so proud of you!”
“Mom, I haven't even asked him yet,” Pidge complained, her voice muffled against her mom's shirt.
“Oh, please, like he's going to say 'no'?” Matt remarked from the doorway. He grinned at the glare his sister cast in his direction. “I'm just saying that I talk to Shiro a lot. And you know who else talks to Shiro? Keith does. Trust me, he'll be tripping over himself to agree to let you join him.”
Pidge rolled her eyes. The very idea of Keith being anything other than composed and unshakable by something she had to say was silly. Maybe it would have been different when they were younger and just starting out as Team Voltron, but not after all of their experiences during the war and throughout Reconstruction.
“You're all getting way ahead of yourselves,” Pidge said as she extricated herself from her mom's arms. “And making way too big of a deal out of this. All I'm doing is asking if I can go with him and help with the Outreach Program.”
With Kolivan serving as the interim Emperor of the Galra until he either stepped down or Reconstruction reached its ten-year mark, it had fallen on Krolia to lead the weakened, but not fully depleted, Blade of Marmora. She split the Blade into two separate but equal groups – one to continue their undercover work and root out any insurgents before they could cause too much trouble and the other a much more public branch dedicated to reaching out to affected planets and offering aid in whatever way they could.
Pidge, who felt like she was stagnating by staying on Earth and doing the same thing day in and day out, thought that going back out and seeing the universe with her own eyes was exactly what she needed. And sure, she could ask Hunk if she could tag along with his crew and he would gladly welcome her on board, but she wasn't sure she'd really find what she was looking for on a ship devoted to the culinary arts of the universe. Pidge had thought about it for a long time and, in the end, came to the conclusion that asking Keith was the way to go.
That was months ago and she'd seen him twice since then. She'd chickened out both of those times.
Because maybe she had a second motive for wanting to go with him. Something beyond wanting to explore the universe and even more of a... personal desire.
“Leaving already?” Sam asked, poking his head into the entrance hall.
Matt nodded. “Yeah, I have a few things to check on in the lab and Pidge wants to get to her meeting on time, so I figured we should head out.”
Pidge and Matt wrapped up their goodbyes and then set off to the Galaxy Garrison, where Matt dropped her off close to the Voltron Memorial before continuing on his way to the parking garage. Pidge watched him leave before she began making her way up the gleaming white stairs, which led to the top of a hill where a massive stone sculpture of Voltron stood watching over the land.
Normally the area was crawling with tourists, but once a year it was reserved for a group of 7 as they celebrated the day they first met.
As Pidge reached the top of the steps, she saw most of her friends were already there and seated at a round patio table. Shiro was smiling as he listened to whatever story Lance was enthusiastically telling, while Hunk leaned back and occasionally interjected.  Lance paused his story as she approached.
“You're on time!”
“Like you haven't been late a time or two,” Pidge shot defensively shot back. Seriously, she was late once or twice (or a lot) because she got wrapped up in something she was working for and the man would never let her forget it.
Lance grinned at her. “I was just telling Shiro and Hunk about the time you came out to visit the farm.”
“A memory I'd rather forget,” Pidge said with a wince. She sat down between Hunk and Shiro and gently set her bag down on the floor at her feet. “Where's everyone else? I figured Allura and Coran would have come with you, Lance.”
“Dropping the twins off with Romelle. She agreed to babysit,” Lance responded.
“Even after last time? Brave woman,” Hunk joked.
Pidge couldn't help but smile. The twins were Lance and Allura's 3-year-old children, Alfor and Maribel, and were a handful even for the most experienced and patient people. Romelle was practically a saint for being able to watch them on her own and Pidge wished she could know how she did it. (Maybe then she wouldn't end up covered in mud or running from bees or locked in the attic, all of which had happened during her first and last visit to the farm and was undoubtedly the story Lance was telling when she walked up.)
“You could have brought them along. I would love to see Alfor and Maribel again,” Shiro said.
Lance shook his head. “No, trust me. This is the better option. If we take our eyes off of them for even a second they'll have climbed to the top of the Voltron statue. Somehow. And good luck getting them down.”
Shiro made a sound to indicate his disbelief. “They're not that bad.”
“Yes, they are,” Lance and Pidge deadpanned in unison.
And honestly, they were sweet kids, but the amount of trouble they could get into was staggering and, in some ways, only reinforced Pidge's feelings that she never wanted to have any of her own.
Lance soon launched into a series of stories of the more interesting antics of the twins, which Allura and Coran backed up once they arrived. Pidge found herself laughing over some of the ones she hadn't heard before and because of that, she completely missed Keith's arrival via one very special cosmic wolf. He easily inserted himself into the conversation as he took a seat between Shiro and Coran – directly across from Pidge – and it was like he'd been there the whole time.
They soon branched off from stories about the twins so everyone could describe what they'd been up to since the last time all seven of them were together.
Lance and Allura, of course, had the kids and their farm on New Altea, which they ran with the help of Lance's family. In the beginning, Allura tried to split her time between them and trying to rule as Queen, but it eventually became too much and she turned to Coran for help, who suggested a council of trusted individuals to run the day-to-day duties that were necessary for the new planet to flourish. No one was surprised when he was elected Head Chancellor of the Council.
Even once things calmed down, Shiro retained his role as Captain of the Atlas, if only for the fact that he was the only one the ship responded to. The big, bulky ship didn't have much use outside of exploration and assisting with Reconstruction (sometimes by providing extra muscle for goods, sometimes just for transporting more sensitive or bulky materials), but Shiro spoke of his job and crew with pride. He even mentioned that he started seeing someone, though he wouldn't say who.
(“It's still new to both of us,” he said in response to Lance's begging. “We want to wait and see where things go before we start telling everyone.”)
Hunk had a myriad of new stories about all of the new recipes he created, as well as some of his worst failures. He had them all laughing so hard that it brought tears to their eyes at some of his descriptions. He then spoke of future plans and how he was looking to hire more chefs to help with the increased demand for their food before turning the conversation over to Keith.
“There isn't much to say,” Keith said with a shrug. “It's not like anything has changed since the last time we talked. You all know what I've been doing.”
“Are you really going to sit there and say that nothing interesting has happened to you? You're traveling with Zethrid and Ezor and yet you have no stories?” Lance asked incredulously. “Nope. I don't believe it.”
“You don't have to believe it, but it's true.”
Some things never change.
Pidge tried not to laugh as the two bickered. They only stopped because Shiro stepped in to put an end to it and then it was her turn to gloss over what she'd been working on. Project Lionheart was largely still a secret, though they'd be ready to announce its existence in a few months.
Hours bled together as the seven friends sat and talked and laughed together. Eventually, the sun began to set and Allura and Lance stood to say their goodbyes and go collect the twins from Romelle. Shiro followed soon after, giving the excuse that he had a “hot date” to get ready for, and then Coran and Hunk left together, talking about food supply and whether or not Hunk was willing to make a stop by New Altea during his next round trip.
That left Pidge with Keith.
Alone.
With no one else around to watch her make a fool of herself.
“Are you alright?” Keith asked.
Pidge jerked her head up to stare at him with wide eyes. “Y-yeah, of course! Why wouldn't I be? Everything's great!”
Keith raised an eyebrow. “You've been more quiet than usual.”
Pidge opened her mouth to protest and then immediately shut it. He wasn't wrong. She'd spent most of the afternoon trying not to blurt out her question in the middle of someone else talking and she was dying to get it over with. Finally, they were alone and it was the perfect chance, but everything she wanted to say had suddenly fled her mind.
It was ridiculous!
Keith was her friend!
Her rather handsome friend who she'd developed a large crush on, but her friend nevertheless. Talking to him was easy. She just needed to keep it simple.
“I was wondering... If I asked to go with you the next time you head out, what would you say?”
She watched as Keith sucked in a breath as her words registered in his mind, his eyes widening slightly, and then...
“I'd say that I'd be lucky to have you by my side. You're welcome to come along whenever you'd like.”

a voltron au? in 2020? it’s more likely than you think
look. LOOK. i know that voltron is stupid and we hate it but lets be honest: everything up until season 3 was pretty good and had lots of potential !!
today i was rewatching voltron and a thought struck me: what if, instead of shiro being cloned, he was chipped and turned to the side of the galra?
so here it is, i did not blink since i thought of this
(warning, i have not seen voltron in a while and this is just knowledge i have stored in my moss brain and stuff i know from rewatching the first season)
au where shiro goes evil bc of what happens @ end of season one instead of the clone thing bc 1) haggar rly could not have made thousands of shiros after bumping into team voltron like what twice? its hella improbable and 2) just… weird
so instead they insert a chip in him that helps them spy and control him just like kuron (the clone) did minus the unlikely storytelling
eventually after the convo with sendak when he was in the pod trying to temp shirp, he does have thoughts about helping zarkon
(“im already infiltrated with the arm, i could just speed up the process by leaving now. save the team the trouble of investing in a leader that’s doomed to fail from the strart.”)
shiro ends up leaving team voltron in season 2 after zarkon goes crazy w the black lion n stuff
^^ this adds to Keith’s reasoning of joining the Blade of Marmora (shiro is his main stability and one of the main reasons he even stuck around with team voltron, so with shiro gone and keith questioning his place as the leader and paladin of the black lion, he decides the BoM is just.. what’s best for him)
obviously lance isn’t happy with this (“you just told me that i’m a valuable member, now you don’t think YOU are? what logic is that?”)
ofc keith goes anyways
lance becomes paladin of the black lion
allura takes on the red lion
who has blue lion? ...idk this isn’t that thought out (maybe matt after pidge finds her family) (which will happen earlier in the plot since we can forget about the miniplot of black no longer responding to shiro)
enter lotor only this time he has a sidekick and what omg its shiro wow
shiro has that bigger version of his arm that was once offered to him
he’s stronger and scary, but his eyes aren’t the same, he has the strength of a galra but lacks the passion
in the fight between lotor and zarkon, (and after, of course lots of self doubt and questioning) shiro comes between them and convinces lotor NOT to kill zarkon
then zarkon kills lotor
everyones like oh shit bc surely someone who’s life was just spared wouldn’t kill the person who seems to have the most power
but he did. bc he’s zarkon. and he’s fckn crazy.
shiro doesn’t go back to team voltron bc its too much too easily
instead he takes the place of lotor in the group of gals
he convinces them all to rebel against the galra
eventually they teach him all about quintessence and all the shit lotor had planned that they can’t do anymore
(lotor wasn’t harvesting alteans in this universe bc what the heck even was that subplot that had little to no relevance to the main storyline?
instead he was trying to find a way to technologically bring back alteans (kinda like how allure’s dad was originally preserved in s1)
i know nothing about How Stuff Works and i dont remember much about quintessence n shit but the basic idea is that when tying in some of a persons artifacts with technology stuff and some quintessence then boom. a weird route from astral projection land to the team is created and ppl can come back or smth idfk
but lotor was never able to get the comet so shiro decides he and the gals will get that comet and try to bring back as many alteans as they can
^ all this while infiltrating as many galra fleets as possible + saving planets under galra empire
they personally visit every planet that lotor was in charge of and release them from galra control
they are able to bring back an altean (its romelle) and she talks abt her friend who lives on the balmera and they go to the balmera and its revealed that it was shay’s great grandmother so romelle asks where shay is and shay’s family is like with team voltron of course
so
they take her
obviously team voltron, the BoM and the Rebels r very hesitant to make contact but they decide to try it out
keith refuses to meet, instead he’s on the team that stands guard
reunions !!
romelle and shay hit it off and hunk makes a dinner much like roselle’s past (allura and coran also hang out and they all vibe)
lance talks to shiro abt everything to do with keith and shiro is like dude do u??? like him?
and lance is like what? no ofc not—oh shit.
and keith ✨overhears ✨
pidge matt and shiro catch up n shit
meanwhile keith is like Hey Lance Uhhhhhh What The Fuck
they end up being like hey since we’re all here and we hate zarkon what if we make a plan to end the galra’s reign Right Now
so they do
and y’all.. it’s hella baller plan
except something is going wrong and in the middle of an attack zarkon is able to get the upper hand
due to haggar’s magic and lance’s mental and emotional instability, zarkon is able to get in his head
everyone is trying to talk him down but they’re all under a lot of pressure
allura is also conflicted bc she wanted to be black lion bc she wanted to rub it in to zarkon’s face that she was stronger than he and that she could beat him at his own game
but the negativity and instability feeds into zarkon’s power and makes him and haggar stronger as they pull in voltron to finally take over the team and regain their status as the most powerful alien race
hunk realizes this and is like okay can y’all stop being negative? its clearly affecting them in a good way and it makes us an easier target
and pidge is like im literally a child pls i don’t wanna die i just got my family back it can’t end like this
shiro realizes what’s going on and he goes to save them
he uses all his energy, pulling in the positive memories (everything: first learning about space, becoming a teacher, meeting adam, meeting keith, first making team voltron, his friends and family--all of it) to push back zarkon and haggar’s powers and battle once more in the astral realm
in defeating zarkon, shiro loses his life
afterwards keith enters the ship in a hurry and is like where the fuck is shiro where’s my brother what did you do what happened
and team voltron is like hey man.. we are so so sorry
and keith cries because the last thing he ever said to shiro was mean
lance feels like its all his fault since he was supposed to be a good leader
they talk about separately while hunk pidge and allura discuss
krolia is like keith we, ur family, are here for u
and axca is there and shes like um?? hey?? sry for trying to kill u bro
and he’s like i absolutely do not wanna talk i just lost my closest friend
they talk about it later
axca tells keith abt shiro finishing lotor’s work and abt bringing people back and well..
they use the methods to help keith visit shiro in the astral realm
shiro is like oh uh hey i was just having a drink w adam we r happy
and keith is like shiro u fuckhead why would u sacrifice urself
shiro sighs bc cmon keith you KNOW why “remember what i always said? we can’t focus on what went wrong..”
“we’ve got to figure out how to make it right” keith finishes
keith breaks tf down crying and screams apologizing
“i love u shiro. ur a like a big brother to me.”
and shiro is like yeah i know and ilyt but hey. everyone’s safe and happy. im safe and happy. & you deserve to be too. you don’t need me anymore.
so the galra rule is over and everyone goes to their respected planets
romelle and the other alteans as well as some galra babes hang in earth
romelle and shay r in an apartment together and have a garden
allura realizes she may not have been the strongest leader for voltron, and  couldn’t stop zarkon on her own but that physical strength doesn’t define her as a whole
her heart is strong enough to care for everyone, so thats what she does
allura starts running an inn for alteans filled with painted sceneries like altea in case anyone ever needs a reminder of home
when lance reunites with his family its a real tearjerker
rachel finally gets her jacket back and veronica is like So.. Axca 👀
the McClain’s host a huge party for everyone and it’s filled with lots of hugs and loud music and even tho lance was way too tired, he danced all night
he wouldn’t trade his family for the world—genetic and chosen
when hunk reunites with his parents they don’t let him out the house for hours, he tells them all about his new best friend shay as well as hundreds of his favorites stories from space
they are so, so proud of him
hunk spends the next days playing minecraft and animal crossing with pidge, giving their brains a rest from being on hyperdrive for 3 yrs straight
when pidge gets home she finally gets grounded by her mom, only being allowed to leave the house to see her old teammates
(same for matt and her dad)
(her mother cries so hard when they opened the door to the home)
the holt family holds movie nights filled with popcorn, cuddles, and tears
keith moves in with the holt family, and finally accepts that he has a home as well as a family
he often goes on trips with the BoM but mostly just stays on earth
after a Team Voltron sleepover in the altea inn keith and lance decide to get an apartment together and live their lives in love and in peace
everyone gets together once a year in celebration of shiro and the sacrifice he made for them
they use the ship to visit Astral Shiro and once they even met adam
everyone laughs and catches up and just... live their lives
everyone is happy
pls ignore any and all errors lmao
again, just a thought !! maybe i’ll write a fic abt it idk for sure but yeah
feel free to add anything <3

Day 11 - “You weren’t supposed to hear that.”
Fandom: Voltron (AU)
- - - - - - - - - -
After four long years and several close calls, Lance contently looks down from his perch on the counter as his family - both old and new - hangs out in the kitchen of his childhood home as the smell of his mother’s cooking wafts through the air.
Beside him, Hunk shows Allura and Romelle how to properly slice the onions and peppers, his larger hands practically dwarfing theirs as he instructs them on how to properly hold the knife and how to curl their fingers - knuckles out - over the vegetable as they cut, all the while answering the alien princess’s rapid fire questions about the properties of each edible item before them. Rachel stands on their other side, pressing garlic and adding more practical bits and pieces of information to Hunk’s overly technical explanations.
Likewise, his mom is stationed at the oven with Keith’s mom, gently instructing the Galran woman as they stand watch over searing meat. Apparently Krolia had become quite interested in cooking during her last stay on Earth; however, after about twenty-some-odd years of inactivity, she was a bit rusty. His momma, ever-kind and ever-helpful, had offered to tutor her. It seems to be going well so far, even as Krolia cautiously pokes at the beef with her spatula.
The others are sitting at the table, all absorbed in their own conversations. Pidge and Veronica sit in the far corner - the one with the outlet - huddled around Pidge’s laptop, utterly absorbed in whatever the younger girl had on the screen. Lance rolls his eyes good-naturedly. What nerds. Meanwhile, Shiro and Keith are stationed at the other end of the table, talking with Marco and Luis. Probably regaling some of their more - ah - PG adventures, if the awed looks on his brothers’ faces were anything to go by.
Lance turns a bit to peek out the window behind him, watching his niece and nephew chase Kosmo around the yard, shrieking with laughter. Their mother lingers near the garage with his father and Coran, both giving what was surely an in-depth explanation of how cars work to the older alien, who had been utterly fascinated with the ‘primitive machines’ on sight.
It was loud and warm and almost jarringly surreal and... absolutely perfect.
Lance would not trade this moment for anything in the universe.
He catches movement from the corner of his eye as he turns back around. Shiro is now standing, lingering at the saloon door (name courtesy of Cousin Vinny) leading to the rest of the house, talking to Luis. Marco is nowhere in sight. When did that happen?
“It’s the second door to your left,” his brother tells Shiro. “If you find yourself in a purple room, you’ve gone too far.” Lance makes a small noise of understanding as their leader steps out, the door swinging gently behind him.
Which brings us back to surreal. Because not only was the Takashi Shirogane in his house, he was currently heading up to use the bathroom Lance and his siblings had all shared growing up. Where Veronica had taught him and Rachel about the importance of skin care and where Luis had dyed his hair firetruck red on a dare, much to their mother’s horror. Where Marco had accidentally knocked over a bottle of blue nail polish, creating a stain on the aged white countertop that no amount of scrubbing could get out (trust him, they had tried) and Lance had contemplated cutting his hair like his childhood hero on more than one occasion, forelock and all.
‘What is my life?’ he muses with a shake of his head.
“-and I’m sure Lance would love to do that after dinner.” Lance perks up at the sound of his name.
“Lance would love to do what now?”
His mother throws an amused look at him over her shoulder. “Give everyone a tour of the house after dinner. If they are going to be staying here, they should know where things are, don’t you think?”
“I mean I guess,” Lance snarks, the beginnings of a smile pulling at his cheeks. When Mama shoots him her patented ‘playfully exasperated’ look, he sticks his tongue out at her mischievously. She laughs outright at that, a fond smile of her own playing on her lips.
He had missed this.
“Thank you once more for letting us all stay here for the time being,” Allura repeats for what had to have been the zillionth time, putting her knife down next to her pile of freshly diced onions. “I know it is quite an imposition, but –.”
His mom cut her off with a wave of her hand. “Think nothing of it. We’re glad to have you.”
Allura shoots the older woman her best diplomatic smile as she crosses the kitchen to deliver the onions to the stove. “Still, with there being so many of us, please do not hesitate to ask our assistance with anything around your home. We would be happy to help, seeing that we will be taking up so much space.”
“And that’s not even counting Hunk and Pidge’s families,” Romelle adds unhelpfully, still squinting down at her half-cut pepper in concentration. “The house will be way more crowded when they get here in a few quinants!”
Lance bites back a smile as Allura’s eyebrow twitches in mild annoyance. “Yes, thank you, Romelle.” She manages to keep her voice level though, so count him impressed. “As I was saying, Mrs. McClain, please do not hesitate to -.”
She stops short when the cutting board is plucked from her grasp and his mother takes the princess’s hands in her own.
“My dear, I truly appreciate the offer, but you really don’t need to worry about this. Especially with everything else on your plates.”
“Yeah, what you should be worried about is whatever story those idiots at the Garrison are cooking up to cover their sorry asses after this disaster,” Veronica interjects from across the room. “Three legally dead Garrison researchers and four missing cadets showing up in five extraterrestrial war machines with four aliens in tow?” She barks out a laugh. “What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall of that meeting.”
Keith leans back in his chair, arms crossed firmly over his chest, and rolls his eyes disdainfully. “Only took them a couple of days to come up the pilot error bs, so I’m sure they can come up with something equally as stupid in two weeks.”
“As I was saying,” Mama continues before Veronica can reply. “We are more than happy to host everybody. You’re as good as family now.”
Allura looks ready to protest further so Lance butts in. “You’re not going to win this one, Princess. Trust me; just let it go.” He ignores the slight pout Allura sends his way. “There’s been a few holidays where we had more than twenty people staying here at once, so this is nothing.”
“Marco and Luis’s old rooms are empty,” Rachel offers, having finished her part of prep work and depositing the ingredients next to Krolia. “So, the Garrets and Holts can stay there. And I don’t mind giving up my room for someone to use.”
Lance hums in agreement. “I can easily fit two or three people on the blow-up mattress in my room and two can fit in my bed. You mind bunking up again, Hunk?”
“Always down for a sleepover, dude!”
His mother laughs, giving Allura’s hands a squeeze before dropping them. “That can work for tonight, but I would like to arrange something a little more comfortable for our guests.” She rejoins Krolia at the stove and begins throwing the now chopped veggies into a fresh pan. “Sleeping on an air mattress is only okay for a night or two, I don’t care who you are.”
“Shiro, Hunk and I can stay in Lance’s room,” Keith decides, arms still crossed over his chest. “The girls can stay with Veronica or Rachel and Coran and my mom will each take one of the spare rooms.”
Rachel makes a sharp noise – almost like a squeak – only to shrink back when all eyes turn to her. She briefly catches Lance’s gaze before quickly looking away.
“They can stay in my room,” she suggests sheepishly. “I don’t mind.”
“Perfect!” Their mother beams. “I’ll have the boys move everyone’s things upstairs in a bit.”
With the sleeping arrangements settled, everyone goes back to their own conversations. No sooner had this happened, Rachel is dropping the rag she had been cleaning up her workspace with and pulling Lance off the counter.
“Hey -!” he starts to protest but is promptly shushed by his twin. No one spares them a second glance.
“You should know,” Rachel says quietly, pulling him to her side as soon as he is close enough. “That when you disappeared four years ago, no one wanted to touch anything in your room. It became like a shrine to you or whatever.”
Annoyance leaves as quickly as it came, and guilt pulls heavily at his heart. He was not prepared to deal with this today. “Rach, I -.”
She cuts him off with an impatient noise. “Don’t make that face. You have nothing to be guilty about. What I’m trying to say is that your room is exactly how you left it when you went back to the Garrison.” She pulls back a bit to give him a meaningful look. “Exactly how you left it.”
Lance stares at his twin blankly for a moment, trying desperately to remember what his childhood bedroom even looked like and – more importantly – what could possibly in it that would prompt such a warning from his sist-.
His stomach dropped.
Oh.
Oh.
Okay. Cool. Cool cool cool cool cool. That’s fine – no big deal. Thanks for the heads up, Rach. He could totally handle this. He would just have to run upstairs real quick. Five minutes tops. No one would be the wiser. He just needed to get his mom rambling then sneak out and-.
Pidge’s voice cuts through his planning and suddenly everything falls to shit.
“What’s this?” she teases, her voice loud enough to easily cut through the other quiet conversations in the kitchen. He whirls around to face her, glare already in place. “Lance has something super embarrassing in his bedroom?”
“What? No! Uh…um- It’s actually, uh-.” He hears Rachel stammer behind him. Bless her for trying to cover for him, but it was too late – Pidge had already picked up on the scent. His sister must sense this too because she shoulders droop in defeat. “You weren’t supposed to hear that,” she finishes lamely.
The kitchen falls quiet as Lance and Pidge continue to stare at each other, as though sizing the other up. In his peripheral, he sees Allura and Keith shift, looking equally as intrigued by this bit of information. Hell, Keith finally uncrossed his arms, he was that interested. Hunk glances between them, looking confused, before his eyes light up in realization and his mouth drops into an ‘O’. He remembers too, apparently.
Their eyes all flicker to the doorway leading out of the kitchen. Almost in sync, which would have been off-putting in any other situation. Or maybe not - perhaps it was another little quirk after spending so much time sharing a headhole as Voltron.
Maybe that’s how Lance knew exactly what they were all thinking. He narrows his eyes, daring them to try it.
A beat of tense silence envelopes the kitchen. The sizzle of cooking food suddenly deafening.
They all leap for the door at once.
Lance has his eyes set on Keith, since he is - was - seated closest to the exit. Hopefully, if he manages to get around him first, he could stop Pidge and Allura as well. He’s not sure how exactly he’ll keep them from squeezing by – he knows he’s a bit of a bean pole and there is no way he’s strong enough to keep all three of them back, so he’ll have to -.
There’s an undignified squawk behind him. When he whips his head around, he finds Hunk, now standing in the middle of the kitchen, with Allura firmly tucked against his chest in a hold she couldn’t muscle her way out of that hold without potentially hurting him. His other hand was wrapped around Pidge’s arm, holding her back.
Has he mentioned how much he loves his best friend? It’s a lot. Like, so, so much.
“It’s the last door on your right!”
Veronica, on the other hand, can go straight to hell.
He turns back to deal with Keith, only to find the door swinging; the older boy having apparently taken advantage of Lance’s momentary distraction.
He swears vehemently and bolts. His mother shouts after him, scandalized and angry - and oh boy, she just full-named him, he was so screwed later - but right now he pays her little mind, already halfway out the door.
Keith has only made it to the end of the long hallway by the time he makes it out of the kitchen and Lance practically roars in frustration as the jerk effortlessly leaps over the banister to run up the stairs. Luckily, being a bean pole has its advantages, like long legs, so by the time Lance’s hand catches the rounded top of the banister post, Keith is only just reaching the summit. Using his hold on the post to swing around sharply, redirecting his momentum without slowing him down too much, Lance thunders up after him, taking two at a time. Fast, but not fast enough. When he gets to the top, Keith is at the end of the hall, opening his door. But Lance doesn’t slow down - not as he stumbles over the hall runner (he’s always hated that stupid freaking rug), not as he enters his room (for the first time in years - holy shit), not even as he leaps at Keith, bringing them both to the floor.
The other paladin shouts in surprise as they go down and Lance knows he has precious seconds to take control of the situation. Keith may be better at hand-to-hand, but if he acts fast enough, that won’t matter. So as soon as they hit the ground, Lance is scrambling on top of him, pushing his shoulders down when he tries to roll over, grabbing his arms and wrenching them behind his back to pin them there with both hands, like he had been taught (and by Keith too - ha!). That done, he quickly readjusts his stance so he can press his sneakers gently along the knee pits, so no stray kicks could dislodge him. Once satisfied that Keith isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, he sits back on the other boy’s lower back, more than a little smug.
Keith turns his head to the side to glare up at him, grumbling and trying to blow stray hairs from his face. Lance grins back, digging his knees into Keith’s hips just a bit to be annoying.
“You should really know better than to mess with me, Keith,” he taunts.
“Oh my god.” Lance pauses in readjusting his hold on Keith’s arms because that wasn’t the frustrated or annoyed tone he was expecting. Instead, it was kind of breathless and surprised. “Oh my god,” he repeats, a bit louder and this time his shoulders are shaking, and Lance tightens his grip on his wrists. “Oh my god, Lance.” It’s straight laughter now - Keith’s entire body quakes beneath Lance as he chokes on his guffaws, the part of his face not covered in hair or pressed into the floor flushed a pleasant shade of pink. Lance follows Keith’s gaze to the far wall of his bedroom and feels his heart drop into his stomach.
There, smiling down at them without a care in the world, was a rather large poster of Shiro decked out in his flight gear for the Kerberos mission. If that wasn’t bad enough, it was surrounded by smaller clippings from newspapers and magazines, printouts of interviews with his favorite quotes highlighted, and a whole-ass shelf beneath it filled with other Shiro related memorabilia.
Lance could just die.
“I can’t believe you were one of those fanboys,” Keith manages between giggles.
“Shut the hell up, Kogane,” Lance snaps, hoping the heat radiating from his face didn’t detract from the venom in his tone. “You have literally no room to talk after following him around the Garrison like an overly attached puppy all the time.”
Unfortunately, Keith didn’t rise to the bait. “What?” he teases, grinning up at his captor the best he could manage. “You upset it wasn’t you?”
Lance doesn’t even dignify that with a response, instead digging his knees back into Keith’s sides roughly, taking some pleasure in the groan it earns him.
“Did you find it, Keith?” Pidge calls from downstairs. “What’s he got?”
“Yup!” Keith shouts back. “He’s got a Shi-.”
“Nope!” Lance slaps his hand over Keith’s mouth. “Lance has nothing up here!” He glares down at his prisoner when something warm and wet swipes across his palm. “And no amount of hand licking is going to change that.”
Instead of a frustrated eye roll, Keith tenses. Next thing Lance knows, he is wrenching his arm from Lance’s hold, which had weakened considerably when he took a hand away to cover Keith’s mouth (stupid stupid stupid), and uses his now free appendage to push himself - and Lance - over.
Lance lands on his back with a grunt. He grunts again just seconds later when a weight settles on his stomach. He opens his eyes to find Keith looming over him, a cocksure grin of his own playing on his lips.
“You must be real proud of yourself right now, huh?” he intones, not even bothering to try and escape, despite the fact that his captive-turned-captor hadn’t pinned his appendages. He knows it’s not worth the effort, though the way Keith’s grin grows makes him want to reconsider that stance.
“I wouldn’t say proud,” Keith teases and, yeah, that tone really doesn’t tilt the whole ‘reconsidering’ thing in his favor. He leans forward a bit more, his knees digging a bit into Lance’s side, just enough to be annoying, that dick -. “Maybe something more along the lines of -.”
“I can’t leave you guys alone for a second, can I?”
If Lance’s heart had only dropped into his stomach before, it must have put a hole through the floor just now.
Shiro stands in the doorway, hands firmly planted on his hips in all his Space Dad-slash-Leader-ly glory. Steel grey eyes rake over the paladins sprawled across the floor before an eyebrow quirks up. “Am I interrupting something?”
Keith’s off him in a heartbeat and scrambling to his feet, the flush of on his cheeks rivaling his armor. “No! Not at all! Interrupting what?” he sputters. That only makes the eyebrow go higher.
Lance would make fun of him, but he was still too busy dying on the floor.
“Right,” Shiro drawls, shooting his younger brother a dubious look. “Then you mind explaining to me why the two of you just came barreling up here like a pair of wild animals?”
“It’s all Keith’s fault!”
“Is not!”
“You ran up here first! How is it not your fault?!”
“Well, you didn’t have to -!”
Their commander pinches his nose in frustration. “Guys, seriously.” He drops his hand, eyes darting between the younger men before scanning the rest of the room, as though it would offer a coherent answer the others weren’t giving him. “What’s going o-.” He falters when he spots the far wall. “Oh.”
It’s official. Lance was gone. Dead on arrival. The game show space gods might as well take him now to his Family Feud inspired afterlife.
The silence that follows Shiro’s realization stretches on and on. Lance stares up at his ceiling, tracing the glow-in-the-dark constellations he had painstakingly arranged over his bed, trying his damnedest to ignore the heat radiating from his face and the mental conversation he knows Keith and Shiro are having over him right now. His theory is confirmed moments later when Keith huffs out a long suffering sigh before leaving, presumably heading back downstairs.
Shiro lingers in the doorway a few seconds more while Lance dutifully ignores him in favor of plastic stargazing before taking a few hesitant steps further towards the decorated wall.
“You just gonna keep laying on the floor?” the older man asks, inspecting the selection of pictures and articles closely.
Lance slaps his hands over his face, not wanting to see the awkward and thoroughly weirded out look that was sure to mar Shiro’s face when he was done. “Until the Earth finally decides to swallow me whole, yeah.”
There is a small huff - part amused, part exasperated - before there’s another sharp noise.
“Oh, I remember this - my first nationally broadcasted interview!” He points to one of the smaller photos sloppily cut from a magazine with a laugh. “That was a crazy day.”
It’s eerily reminiscent of those slice-of-life family sitcoms Lance used to watch when he was younger; the ones that always ended with a wholesome heart-to-heart that fixed everything. Shiro was using his Space Dad voice and he could practically hear the violins playing. Lance, who was not in the mood to deal with that at all right now, groans into his hands. “Shiro, I know what you’re trying to do here, but it’s not gonna -.”
“I was so nervous the night before I didn’t sleep a wink,” He barrels on, as though he hadn’t heard Lance. Against his better judgement, Lance peeks at him through his fingers. “But then I was exhausted the next morning which made my nerves even worse. My friends decided to help out by taking turns grabbing me coffee. There wasn’t a point that day where I didn’t have a cup in my hand.” He shakes his head, a fond smile playing on his lips. “What they didn’t tell me - or each other incidentally - was that there were like two or three shots of espresso in each cup. So by the time my interview rolled around that afternoon, I had at least seven shots in my system and was just about ready to crawl out of my own skin. Honest to God couldn’t tell if I was speaking coherently for like eighty percent of the conversation.”
Lance drops his hands away from his face, unable to smother his snickering. “Oh my god.”
“Yup, but as bad as that was, it was nothing compared to what I went through later that night.”
“Holy shit, dude!” Lance crows, curling in on himself as he laughs.
“Exactly.” Shiro’s grin was positively devious as he sends the younger paladin into another fit of laughter. “So now Adam, Matt, and Curtis are not allowed to even touch my coffee. Not even at home. They’ve lost my trust after essentially poisoning me.”
After several long, breathless minutes, Lance manages to calm his hysterics into the occasional giggle. He looks over at Shiro, who is leaning against the wall watching him, a grin of his own gracing his lips and arms crossed over his chest confidently, as though making him laugh was some kind of achievement to be proud about. The pose was identical to the one in the poster behind him. Lance wonders if he did that on purpose. He stares at them for a moment more, surprised to find the sting of embarrassment wasn’t as keen though it was definitely still there. Maybe there was some truth to those cheesy sitcom moments.
‘Whelp, might as well lean into it.’
“You were kind of my childhood hero,” Lance admits sheepishly, as he finally pushes himself up into a seat position. He stares resolutely down at his hands, knowing if he met Shiro’s gaze he wouldn’t be able to continue. “You dealt with so much growing up but still went on to achieve great things. And for a little kid from nowhere Cuba living in the shadow of four older siblings, I thought that was pretty cool.” He winces slightly. That sounded so much better in his head. “Sorry if that’s weird.”
“I don’t think it's weird,” Shiro quickly reassures, taking several steps forward until his boots enter Lance’s periphery. “It’s really flattering. Humbling too, especially since you’re my hero as well.”
Lance’s head snaps up. “What?!”
“You heard me.”
He scrambles to his feet, suddenly unable to remain on the floor. “I’m your what?”
Shiro laughs. “You’re my hero. All five of you, really, but still.”
Lance couldn’t even begin to process that, so he continues to gape.
“I wasn’t able to see much while I was in Black,” the older man elaborates. “But I saw the way you stepped up to the plate when the team needed you to - when Keith needed you to, for which I’m grateful.” He places a reassuring hand on Lance’s shoulder and squeeze gently. “I know that wasn’t always easy for you, on top of all your other duties as a paladin, but you did it all with a smile on your face and it made all the difference.” He tilts his head until he meets Lance’s gaze. “Of course, you’re my hero.”
Lance sputters because what the hell before deciding ‘fuck it’ and throwing his arms around Shiro. The hug is readily returned, and Lance let’s out a semi-hysterical wheeze when he’s squeezed.
They break apart sometime later and Lance is quick to bow his head to quickly wipe away a stray tear or two. If Shiro notices, he doesn’t say anything, for which Lance is infinitely grateful.
Once he is sure he’s regained control of his emotions, he clears his throat. “Keith’s probably told the others about the posters by now, huh?”
Shiro smiles sympathetically. “Probably, yeah.”
Lance’s shoulders slump as he groans. “It’s not that I’m ashamed or anything, but I can really do without the teasing.”
Shiro hums consideringly before throwing his arm around the younger man’s shoulders. “How about we level the playing field then? At least for Keith,” He suggests with a downright devious grin.
“I’m listening.”
“Have you ever heard of Mothman?”

“Oof.”
Krolia is very suddenly awoken the sudden pressure of 45 pounds of toddler on her kidney.
“Sorry,” Keith whispers when he sees she’s awake.
“Maybe let’s not stand on my internal organs,” she wheezes, and Keith scrambles off of her sheepishly.
“Sorry,” he repeats when he’s sat safely on her legs. He sticks his thumb in his mouth. “Didn’t mean to, Mama.”
Krolia carefully moves Tex’s arm of her midsection so she can sit up. She places a gentle hand on Keith’s cheek, and he leans into her palm with a sigh.
“What’s wrong, baby? Nightmare?”
Keith nods.
“You wanna sleep here? Or should I tuck you back in?”
He shrugs, but cuts such a nervous look to the door that Krolia can guess which one he really wants. She shifts over a little, making enough space between her and her husband for one little monkey.
“Come here, diallo.”
Keith doesn’t hesitate, diving in the space and curling up immediately. Unfortunately for Tex, their son’s mad dash for the safety between them included a pretty solid (although accidental) kick to the ribs.
“Jesus fu —”
“Language, Tex,” Krolia warns, desperately trying not to laugh. “We’ve got little monkey ears listening in.”
“‘M not a monkey,” Keith protests, giggling.
Tex is still a little wheezey from the assault to his ribs, but manages to smile and tease anyway. “I dunno. Krolia? I think he’s a monkey. What about you?”
Krolia taps a finger to her chin, pretending to think hard. “I think you might be right, Tex. I mean, he’s got his little monkey ears.” As she says it, she reaches forward and playfully tugs on the fluffy purple ears at the top of Keith’s head, that appear when he’s tired or emotional.
Keith bats her hands away. “Nuh-uh! They’re my Galra ears! Not monkey ears!”
Krolia’s grin gets so wide she feels it might split her face.
Her son is so cute.
“I know I’m right,” Tex continues to tease, “because he’s got little monkey paws!” Tex grabs on of Keith’s chubby hands and blows a raspberry on the palms, making him shriek with laughter.
“No, Daddy, no! That tickles!”
Tex continues to tickle the poor boy, until he squirms around enough to grab his father’s face with both hands, holding him still. “Stop, Daddy. You’re making me laugh so much I’m gonna explode.”
“You are the cutest — little — thing,” Tex says, punctuating each word with a kiss on Keith’s cheeks. Keith giggles, but his eyelids are beginning to droop.
“Alright, I think it’s time to tone down the sillies and go to sleep,” Krolia says.
Keith pouts. “But I’m not tired, Mama.”
“Then why are you yawning, baby?”
Keith shrugs. He can barely even keep his eyes open. “It’s awake yawning.”
“Oh, I see,” Tex says softly. “That makes sense.”
Keith makes a little humming sound. “Not tired,” he mumbles, eyes fully closed.
“Of course,” Krolia agrees, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Love you, munchkin.”
Keith’s out before he can respond.
Tex chuckles softly, looking at Keith with more softness than she ever thought capable of him. Not that he’s a rough man by any means (well. Maybe by one or two means, if you check her drift, but she has no problem with that), but to see his jagged edges so smoothed out… Krolia is more and more grateful, every day of her life, that she decided to stay.
“I love that little squirt so much,” Tex says quietly. “I never thought I wanted kids, before. Always seemed like too much to handle. But there’s nothing I wouldn’t handle for him.”
“I know,” Krolia says.
“I hope he knows how much I love him,” Tex continues.
“He does. He knows, Tex. You tell him all the time.”
“I worry,” Tex admits, brushing Keith’s fluffy hair off his forehead. “I can’t explain it. But I’m always worried that I won’t always get to tell him, and that he’ll forget.”
Krolia is familiar with that anxiety. Despite knowing how far away Earth is from everything — truly, in terms of distance, the planet is almost untouchable — there’s always a low thrum of terror in her veins. What if Zarkon discovers a way to track the lions? What then? How will she protect her family? Will she be able to?
“You have to trust him,” Krolia whispers. “We do what we can. We tell him every day, we make sure he’s as safe and loved as he can be. From there —” she shrugs, looking at her husband a little helplessly. “From there, it’s up to the universe what happens. We have to trust that he’ll remember that to us, he’s the most precious thing to exist.”
Tex doesn’t look — comforted by her words, exactly. But he does look calmed.
“I do trust him,” he says.
“Then everything will be fine.”
Krolia can’t promise that, not really. But she knows that she will do everything in her power to keep that promise. And she has to trust that it’s enough.

Ok, so, y'know how I said I wasn't sure when I'd start the Galtean Klance Royal Au? Well. . .I might have started it already. Here, have the ~850 word prologue. I decided that it is going to be an Omegaverse after all, but secondary sexes have yet to be entirely determined. Also, just a brief single entry glossary: rakhai - a large, dark-furred cat that makes its home in the temperate forests of Daibazaal. Their fur is of varying shades, but always streaked another color to blend into their woodland home.
~*~*~*~
Prologue: Escape
Keith woke to his mother’s voice. Rubbing his eyes, he realized that it wasn’t yet morning and couldn’t understand why his mama was in his room and in traveling clothes.
“Mama? What’s going on? Are we going on a trip?” he asked, still not fully aware.
“We are,” Krolia answered softly, “But we have to be quick and quiet about it. Here, get dressed and pack your friends while I gather your clothes.”
She handed him a set of clothes and immediately turned to his wardrobe, pulling a pack out from under it. Keith sat in his bed, clothes in his hands, not understanding why he needed to be quiet, but then a thought came to his five-year-old mind.
“Is the trip a surprise, Mama? Is that why we hafta be quiet?” he asked in a loud whisper while yanking his nightshirt over his fluffy head.
“It is, kit. We can’t let anyone hear us. Now be quick.” She tossed another pack onto his bed. Krolia knew what was really happening, but she couldn’t deny her sweet boy his favorite stuffed animals and bedding.
What she wasn’t telling her son was that the castle had been attacked and the Galra army stationed there was making a valiant but failing attempt at repelling the forces. Krolia was to gather her son and meet her mate outside the castle walls with their personal guard where they would make their escape, knowing they couldn’t win this round. The battle hadn’t yet breached the keep, but she couldn’t risk any possible spies hearing their plan, something made that much more difficult when Daibazaal’s prince was so young.
Once Keith had finished dressing himself, he started on the stuffed animals on his bed. He had more then he could count, but the favorites were the only ones allowed in his nest. He was always gentle with them, and stuffed one of his favorite blankets into the bottom of the pack before lining the interior with the assortment of Daibazaal predators made soft and cuddly. His top favorite animal, a dark purple-streaked black rakhai, and favorite deep blood red blanket he left out, opting to carry them in favor of leaving space in the pack for a few things not in his nest he wanted. Padding over to his child-sized desk, he retrieved his drawing paper and enchanted pencils that never dulled and became whatever color the user thought of. Those were carefully added to the pack, a few other enchanted and mundane toys tucked inside before Krolia finished and turned to help her small son.
“Do you have everything you want to bring, kit? We’ll be gone from home for a long time.”
Keith thought for a few seconds, then nodded as decisively as a five-year-old could. He handed the still-open pack to his mama, and gathered his blanket and rakhai in his little arms. She tied it off, securing the flap, and then gathered her kit in her arms, locking the door behind them. The halls of the castle were still quiet, but she knew it wouldn’t stay that way for long. Krolia could only hope that her family could make it out in time.
Kolivan, the captain of the guard, met the queen and prince at the end of the corridor in front of a partially open secret passage. He glanced down the hall behind them, then waved the pair forward. Krolia hurried silently, passing her guard captain when he held the passage open for them. No one spoke until they were safely inside the passage and making their way out.
“Kolivan, where’s Davvik?” Krolia asked.
The guard captain sighed a little. “The king is still with the soldiers. His orders were to get you and Prince Kierryn out to the carriage and he will join us. If he does not, he will meet us further along the road to Altea.”
Krolia’s jaw clenched. She knew her mate all too well. Davvik wouldn’t leave his men until forced. She had a sinking feeling that she had already seen her beloved Alpha for the last time. Preemptive grief gripped her, and she held Keith just a little tighter and walked just a little faster.
“I am sorry, my Queen.”
“It’s alright, Kolivan. We will meet the king on the road.” Both she and Kolivan knew they wouldn’t, but maintained the illusion not only for themselves, but for Keith as well.
The passage wound through the castle’s walls and finally an underground tunnel, eventually opening just beyond the castle’s rear walls. Kolivan ushered the Queen and Prince into the waiting carriage, leaping gracefully to the open seat beside the driver once the carriage was secure. They had only just turned to leave when an explosion rocked the castle and shook the ground, painting the night sky in reds and golds. Krolia jumped, but it was enough to send her tiny kit into scared tears, and she held him close, willing her own tears to remain unshed. She knew for certain that her mate had fallen. Altea was their only hope for safety.

Note
hear me out-
Kogane Space Family AU
krolia gives up her work to be with her family
She takes them to space where they raise Keith and sabotage the empire whenever they get the chace bc can she really stop working against the empire??
Now see, I can't imagine Krolia ever truly giving up on fighting the Galra Empire, especially if she's up in space. It's actually much more funny to imagine Krolia returning to the Blade of Marmora HQ with her half-alien son and alien husband in tow. They are living here now, Kolivan. You have no say in the matter.
Kolivan: Last I recalled, I was your leader.
Krolia: And I respect that. Also they are staying.

I have a weird thing to ship hero's with villains, how would in your opinion Lotor be if he fell in love with Fem Keith soon first meeting and try to woo her in galra ways
Since fem!keith grew up around earth she didn't know what is going on and asked a fellow blade on what is galra version of trying to get a date,?
Hmm. If I did Keitor (with Fem!Keith), Lotor would be slightly discouraged (but determined) to woo this dark haired beauty. He would try all the different ways of impressing her from trying to regale her with his feats of bravery (always coming out on top of his competition), to winning fights in her name, etc. Fem!Keith would balk at these typical ways of Galran courting until Regris (her bff) explains it. She still doesn't like it until Lotor comes across the one thing that makes her eyes light up: knowledge. She drinks up every drop of knowledge Lotor gives her and is still thirsty for more. At last, Lotor has the key to his love's heart: knowledge.
