The Unfinished ATOM Kaiju Showcase
Out of, well, I want to say "a pragmatic assessment of my ability to finish illustrations since carpal tunnel set in" but you could just as easily shorten that to "impatience," I've decided to post a hundred or so ATOM kaiju concepts I've had sitting in my "to finish" pile for the last few years. Here's an official roundup of each post:
Part 1: Retrosaurs
Part 2: More Retrosaurs
Part 3: Tyrantor's Coming of Age Romantic Comedy
Part 4: Even More Retrosaurs but This Time They're Monster Hunter Homages
Part 5: Big Bugs
Part 6: Aliens
Part 7: More Aliens
Part 8: Paul Bunyan. No, Seriously, Paul Bunyan. Also Some Fearsome Critters.
Part 9: Mythic Monsters
Part 10: Recycling Plateodon
Part 11: Oddballs
Part 12: More Oddballs
Part 13: The Oddest Oddballs
Part 14: OOPS I FORGOT A FEW
Will I ever finish the artwork for these guys? I mean, I'd like to, but, uh... let's say the Odds Aren't In Our Favor here. But I want them to get some spotlight all the same, and if/when I write ATOM Volumes 3 and beyond, they can at least enjoy starring in some prose.

So, book one gave me five ideas and I drew three of them, but then book two only gave me two ideas and I drew neither. One was just a commentary on how higher stakes aren't always more engaging for reader/viewer. So some time later I decided to just give him the 'actually trying to draw a good picture' treatment instead of quick practice pictures..I don't know if anything shoots purple energy, I can't remember everything and I'm not trawling the entire bestiary for Atomic Age of Monsters to find out, I just needed something to stand out against the blue sky and Tyrantis' own fire blast.
There’s also definitely some of my own monster design elements sneaking into this and it’s a bit off model, but personally I think that’s what makes fan art fun.

"you are being extra goth today admin" well you see I got emotional thinking about how Eight would stumble back to Jadus after KOTFE/ET with all his adventures and experiences in hand and tell him everything and how it made him realize he loves others but loving them hurts him in a way he can barely comprehend, and that this loneliness is a poison enough to kill...
what do you think of this pain of mine, o lord? is it not unlike anything you've ever tasted? he'd ask across their bond, with a smile so radiant that its light surely would belong to some distant star-- nothing so flesh and blood.
then he'd bury himself in his embrace and whisper how he can no longer stand to be apart from him. even the walls of their physical bodies entwined this close are another separation he can't bear. the darkest parts of the universe are the only place he can live now, with the hearts of men having rejected him thrice over.
so please, he'd murmur, when it all becomes too much-- when your body fails you-- when there comes a time where I can't follow-- take me. take me whole. I promise I'll give you this world and all that my eyes have seen of it.
Jadus understands immediately. It is the one request his Hand has made that he cannot fulfill, if he does not find a way to preserve this fleeting spark of light that has made its way into the dark sanctuary of his being. He will take him, and he will be taken by him-- and he will lose him.
It is a fresh pain he has not felt in nigh over a decade. Not since the early days of his youth, those memories that have never resurfaced from the murky abyss of his tempered mind. He thanks him for this gift. None other could compare, to serve him so faithfully to the ends of his universe and further still. To place at the altar of adoration his own suffering and love, every experienced agony a tribute to the one he places above all.
For that, Jadus must betray him. His Hand, beloved by the dark, will be consumed by the void he lays with so willingly. This future will not come to pass. So is his will. So will he return his bride to that world of suffering he longs to escape.
When the last vestige of his agony has sputtered and died, he will return.
Call the object of my hatred. I have a mission you must carry out.
A single beacon rings.

A Hundred Some New ATOM Kaiju Pt. 3
In this part of the ATOM unfinished kaiju showcase, we're going to focus on a bunch of very similar designs that are all for the same arc: Tyrantor in Love.
Tumblr media
In this story, we followed Tyrantor, the son of Tyrantis. It's the 1970's, and the young tyrannopyrodon is finally fully grown and experiencing the mating instinct for the first time. So he descends into the Yamaneon tunnel system in hopes of finding others of his kind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Early in his journey he runs into two males of his species - Sharp Eye and Blue Brute (the story takes place away from human eyes, so most of the kaiju in it would have names based on what Tyrantor finds notable about them rather than the melodramatic portmanteau names that are standard for ATOM). In sharp contrast to the rivalry that formed between Tyrantis and The Terror, the three young male tyrannopyrodons quickly become friends and decide to explore the tunnels together, figuring it's safer and also will make their scent stronger and easier for others of their kind to follow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trio eventually find an enormous cavern filled with other retrosaur kaiju, including more tyrannopyrodons. There is a couple of older adults - Black Queen and Gold King - who have traveled here to shepherd their eldest daughter, Pale Gaze, who like Tyrantor has just reached maturity. They also have a younger son, Sparky, who's pubescent but not quite fully grown, and an adolescent daughter, Small Crown, who is by far the most imperious of the tyrannopyrodons despite her small size and young age.
(Yeah, Black Queen and Gold King lucked out spectacularly as kaiju go, as having this many viable young, all within a few years of each other, is pretty improbable given how kaiju reproduction goes.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A final four tyrannopyrodons arrive, all female. Largest of them all is Big Quiet, who is uncharacteristically shy and docile for a female of their species. Then there's the punk trio: Gore queen, the de-facto leader, Murder Maw, the most brutal of the three and the one who's been in so many battles that she actually bears scars (again, a rare thing for kaiju given their biology), and finally Bright Hide, who is so named because she has brightly colored scales that are more often sported by male tyrannopyrodons (females tend to have duller color schemes), and who has a dynamic, energetic disposition to match her masculine-by-her-species'-standards color scheme.
All of the tyrannopyrodons in this are *loosely* inspired by various real world tyrannosaurs. To elaborate:
Sharp Eye = Bistahieversor Blue Brute = Daspletosaurus (one of the more robustly built tyrannosaurs) Black Queen = Tarbosaurus (a large Asian tyrannosaur) Gold King = Zhuchengtyrannus (another large Asian tyrannosaur) Pale Gaze = Gorgosaurus (gorgon, gaze, eh?) Sparky = Albertosaurus Small Crown = the now-almost-definitely-proven-to-just-be-a-juvenile-t.rex Nanotyrannus Big Quiet = Nanuqsaurus (polar bear lizard, big pale tyrannopyrodon) Gore Queen = Lythronax (the Gore King) Murder Maw = Teratophoneus (the Murder Monster) Bright Hide, who would at one point be called a "dynamic terror" in the story = Dynamoterror

i want to give a bit of info to everyone who only knows miguel from the movie:
•he is not a vampire! his fangs are from his spider dna and are filled with paralyzing venom :) fun fact: the size of his fangs makes him mumble so other people don't see them while he's talking!
•he wasn't bitten by a spider like most spider people! spider dna was atomically spliced directly into his genes making him 50% spider
•he doesn't stick like other spider people! he uses the talons on his fingers to climb around and such! fun fact: these talons can easily slice through solid metal :)
•he doesn't have a spider sense! instead, all of his senses are majorly enhanced!
•yes! he always moves like that! he automatically moves like a feral monster because that's what he is!
•he has a fiancé named dana and a little brother named gabriel! they are the two most important people in his life :) fun fact: gabriel recognized that it was miguel in the spider suit the first time he saw him in it!
•his eyes are red because they can see in major details and in complete darkness. fun fact: this makes his eyes super sensitive to light, which constantly gives him migraines :)
•yes! his ass is that huge in the comics, too! everyone in the comics are always commenting on it ^^
•miguel is irish/mexican :)
•he is NOT the original spider man of his universe! there was a peter parker in the past before the year 2099
just wanted to clear up some facts about him movie onlys may have misconstrued ^^

Now here's a fan-art I was really proud of doing last year! I made this as a tribute to @tyrantisterror, one of my biggest inspirations in recent memory, and the amazing books he writes. I see The Atomic Time of Monsters as his magnum opus because not only is the duology an exciting read full of amusing characters and exciting action, but because it demonstrates just how fun and engaging it is when the monsters are given whole personalities and even character arcs to themselves. Tyrantis is by and large one of my favorite literary characters as a result. There's something to be said about a ferocious-looking reptilian kaiju with the personality of an all-loving goofball.
My hope is that one day I may be able to adapt both books into an animated miniseries in the future, and I made this poster as a sort of proof-of-concept of that. Maybe I'll reupload it when I get better at drawing, but I still think it looks pretty great for now.

That was the most absolute wide-eyed dread-filled terrified I have ever been of Godzilla. First time that seeing him power up for his atomic breath has made me feel sheer horror. I've said before that it takes a lot to get me to root against Godzilla, and this is one of the few films that pulls it off.
10/10. I don't throw around the phrase "best Godzilla movie ever" lightly but this is sure as hell a contender. Possibly personal new favorite kaiju movie, new favorite monster movie, strong contender for favorite horror movie, even managed to pull off new favorite war movie.
If you have the slightest interest in any of the above genres, you wanna see Godzilla Minus One on the big screen.

Hi! I love your writing
Could you do something like the villain finding out his nemesis hero is member of his nearly extinct (fantasy?) species?
Like the villain thought he was the last of his kin?
"You..." The villain's eyes widened. "You're..."
Between wearing either heavy make-up and coloured contacts in his civilian guise, or his hero mask when he wasn't, the hero could usually pass as human.
Unfortunately, his mask rested utterly useless in the villain's hands and he hadn't had time to do a full face before rushing out the door. The inhumanity of him was thus blatantly visible beneath the villain's devouring gaze.
"A monster?" the hero snapped. "That's rich coming from you, you-"
The villain reached up and, with the careful press of a button, his own mask slid away.
The hero froze.
The hero stared.
The whole world, and all that he was fighting for dropped away as his heart leapt and his mouth went dry and it felt like every atom in his body hummed with recognition.
The villain's eyes were the same purple shade as his own - a dark orchid-esque colour that humans couldn't quite filter properly and had no entirely accurate name for. The line of his cheek had the same glimmer of scales, though the villain's were a shimmering pearl compared to the hero's blue. He hadn't filed his teeth down to blend in like the hero had either. They were carnivore-sharp.
Dragon. In his more humanoid form, certainly, but a dragon nonetheless.
Just like the hero.
Several key facts slid into place.
"Oh," the hero said, breathless. The old language suddenly felt ready and perched on his tongue like a waterfall. He swallowed it down.
"I thought I was the only one left."
The hero's brain churned, as he struggled to compute the astounding evidence in front of him. Because he couldn't - the villain couldn't - except he obviously was.
Had he been stealing for his hoard?
"I thought I was alone," the villain said. "Are there others?!"
Mutely, dumbstruck, the hero shook his head.
He'd thought he was alone too. For so long, so very very long, he'd thought he was the only one left. And now - now. The hero scrambled belatedly to his feet, with a groan of pain. He could feel panic rising. Panic and hope and fury and longing.
The villain closed the gap in an instant, as if scared the hero might run. He curled one hand around the front of the hero's suit to hold him in place, pinning him back against the wall with a matching strength that suddenly made so much more sense. The wall behind them gave an ominous shudder.
His stare raked over the hero's body, like he could slip beneath his clothes and perform a full catalogue or history, before snapping back to the hero's mouth. His teeth.
"What did they do to you?"
"They didn't do anything. I -" There were too many questions, it was too big. The hero had no idea where to start. He reached out to grab his mask back from the villain.
The villain hurled it aside, well out of the way. His freshly-freed hand gripped the hero's wrist. Tight. Possessive.
"Why are you protecting humans?" the villain sounded somewhere between bewildered and livid. "What's wrong with you?"
The hero bristled, the fury clearing his head a little bit too. "What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you? You nearly torched half of London, are you insane?"
"They hunted us. I thought I was the only one left. Are you -"
The villain swore in old tongue. Fire-tongue, though the hero had guessed that much.
He could practically feel the heat rising off the villain, sudden and foreboding. His instincts swerved this way and that; torn between the violence of enmity, of every vicious memory they shared, and all the sheer longings of a home he'd thought lost forever.
Before he'd even fully realised it, he'd reached out, palm searching the villain's chest in turn, finding his heartbeat. Slow. Much slower than a human's could ever be.
Dragon, dragon, dragon.
Kin.
The same.
His.
"Oh, god," the hero said.
"You even sound like them," the villain said, tone not quite kind enough to be wonder. "I really thought you were human. What did they do to you?"
"They didn't do anything! Just - shut up. For one second, just shut up. I need to think. Because you - you're - oh god."
There were many arguments the hero could have made, never mind that the whole point of a secret identity was to fit in, but all he could focus on was the enormity of it.
He wasn't alone.
They weren't alone.
He didn't have to be alone.
The villain's hands moved up to his face, clutching his jaw, cradling him. The purple of his eyes began to deepen to flame.
"Come with me," he said, fully switching to the old tongue. "We shouldn't be fighting each other. You're young - you must be young if you're on their side - we'll talk. You'll tell me everything."
The worst person the hero knew was the only one who could possibly begin to understand.
It was all too much.
The hero ripped himself free, and bolted.
