western women get a lot of flak for being too independent or "masculine" but it always makes me think of spartan women. i think about that quote: "why are spartan women the only women who rule their men" and queen gorgo says it's because "spartan women are the only women who give birth to real men." i think plutarch also mentions that spartan men were always obedient to their wives.
or as socrates put it (quoted by xenophon): "It is the example of the rider who wishes to become an expert horseman: 'None of your soft-mouthed, docile animals for me,' he says; 'the horse for me to own must show some spirit' in the belief, no doubt, if he can manage such an animal, it will be easy enough to deal with every other horse besides. And that is just my case. I wish to deal with human beings, to associate with man in general; hence my choice of wife. I know full well, if I can tolerate her spirit, I can with ease attach myself to every human being else."
and i think there's a lot of truth to this. i think cultures with spirited, independent women are made stronger by it, for a number of reasons. and i think it actually plays a major role in western civilization's success. a strong-willed man and a strong-willed woman working together in union is an incredibly strong foundation for a family and a civilization.
and i don't want to give the impression that the west was ever some kind of gender-egalitarian utopia. but i do think a significant degree of respect for women is a common feature in western civilization (and i'd say broader indo-european culture too). at least compared to other civilizations. and especially in the prechristian and, now, the postchristian eras (though i'd say it even bleeds through in the christian era in some ways too). i mean there's a reason why feminism first blossomed in the west and not elsewhere.
but yeah, this desire for some docile, obedient slave-wife seems to be very contrary to the spirit of western civilization. i mean, it seemed like the default view of women in prechristian europe, for better or worse, was that women were these wild, powerful, passionate, promiscuous creatures who needed to be tamed. and yes, women were expected to be loyal and amenable/agreeable to their husbands but this is hardly unreasonable and is a far cry from the obedient slave-wife some people propose as an ideal (namely traditional christians and muslims and the like).
"women should be banned from doing manual labor" -- traditionally, women did all sorts of manual labor. medieval peasant women would be working in the fields just like the men. and even if they weren't working a field there would be plenty of other physically taxing jobs they'd be doing. not saying that women should be encouraged to do extremely dangerous or physically taxing jobs, but if they're able to more power to them. and i kinda detest this desire to portray women as frail and incapable. they are the weaker sex but they're not weak. let's not infantilize them.
also, western women generally marry out of love and commitment and view themselves (rightfully) as partners in union with their husbands. whereas these types of women (the woman who made this post) believe women's sole purpose is to be obedient little decorations who do nothing but sit around and look pretty (and maybe have babies if she's very traditional -- but often you won't even get that!) while the man just gives her money. it's transactional and superficial. there's no real love or partnership. it's not a good foundation for a family or a civilization.
anyway, belated happy women's day.

being an ambiguously androgynous adult is so weird because on one hand I'll still have to correct people in self-proclaimed progressive spaces who degender me and they're like "Oh I'm sorry I know you used masculine terms and had he/him in your email but once I saw you in person I wasn't sure!" *continues to use they/them* Or alternatively they'll overcompensate by constantly calling me dude boy bro masc male king like WAY more than is organic so it's clear they're funneling every ounce of brainpower in the conversation towards being a #ALLY. meanwhile I'll be about to leave the grocery store where my brother's card got declined at self checkout without us noticing and the loss prevention officer will be like UM EXCUSE ME GENTLEMEN. or a 4 year old at work will forget my name and call me The Boy Teacher. or I'll thank my middle aged bearded catholic uber driver who has not noticed or acknowledged me being transgender because he's been talking about baseball for the entire drive and he's just like Anytime brother *spits on the ground* . like i don't know how to describe it but the most euphoric sense of recognition as a man only ever comes from the most mundane innocuous acknowledgements

Hi! Sorry if you're not the best person to ask this to(??) but I was wondering if you could explain who the Zonai are and why they seem to be such a big deal?? Everyone on here seem to know who they are and what that means for the whole botw/totk universe but I'm so confused??? It's the first time I hear about them...
Yeah, you're fine!! Ha ha, I was actually just trying to explain it all to my friend who wasn't in deep enough to have heard of them either. I kind of only have a surface-level knowledge of the lore myself, but there are plenty of rabbit holes/theory videos to explore from here if you so choose ;)
So as far as I know, the Zonai are only mentioned by name once in BotW, as part of a location name: the Zonai Ruins in Faron.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's basically the sort of distinct, Mesoamerican-inspired style of ruins that you associate with the jungles in Faron, though there are a few other places in Hyrule where you can find ruins with similar architecture (Thundra Plateau, for instance). Their society is further alluded to in the description of the Barbarian Armor, which was worn by an "ancient warlike tribe from the Faron region" (further connecting them to the Lomei Labyrinths, which is where you find the armor).
Most of the actual lore comes from the Creating a Champion book, which says that the Zonai (a pun based on the Japanese word for mystery, nazo) were an ancient, warlike tribe of strong magic wielders who vanished thousand of years ago, and that their disappearance is "one of Hyrule's greatest mysteries." One of the game's lead artists claims to have included them because they thought having mysterious ruins scattered around Hyrule unrelated to the Calamity itself would make the world feel more grounded and real. It also identifies the random tall spire-towers that you find spread out across Hyrule as "Zonai Towers," and states that while their true purpose is unknown, it's thought that they may have been used for magical purposes.
Tumblr media
SO. Even before the first Tears of the Kingdom trailer released, Zelda theory videos loved talking about these guys because they were just so mysterious. Then the imagery in the trailers showed strong similarities to existing Zonai imagery, and they became A Whole Thing. There was a lot of back and forth between people who were certain that the next game would be heavy on the Zonai, and people who thought the Zonai were a red herring, and people who were just kind of sick of all the theory videos screaming about the Zonai (lol kind of like the Zelda equivalent of Gaster I guess, if you're familiar with Undertale at all?). Then. You know.
Tumblr media
That happened.
So yeah, that's about the extent of my knowledge, but it seems like the Zonai are, in fact, A Thing, and we're probably going to find out a lot more about them soon. Hope that helps! 😅

thinking about a stoncy dynamic that’s not romantic or sexual or necessarily even platonic, but it used to be all or some of those things, and now it’s like they don’t know each other really at all anymore unless there’s danger, and then they immediately fall into perfect step with each other without even noticing
they don’t talk and they kinda avoid each other socially after they tried out every configuration of the three of them and none of them worked, but the minute a threat appears suddenly they’re flanking each other without having to discuss it. they fall into battle formation without even a glance. they always know where the other two are in a melee, they don’t have to check. it’s instinctive- stay equidistant, fan out, protect the party. one of them loses their weapon and one of the others throws them another, and they catch it and keep fighting. neither one looks, neither one breaks stride. they move around each other on reflex, like magnets.
just battle-hardened kids who are awkward as hell kids but also seasoned warriors who know each other down to their bones, but only in a fight.
something something the only place you fit in my life anymore is with your back pressed to mine and your weapon raised

Hisuian Zorua this, Hisuian Zoroark that; Arceus, can we go five seconds today on Rotomblr without some incident about to make the news?
Hisuian Zorua have such a bad reputation already. Hateful. Vengeful. Vicious. Incapable of human coexistence.
Truth and ideals, I know there’s nothing I can do out here in this forest, tracking some mystery Pokémon (and for a good cause) with Mackenzie, but I just feel so… helpless. Wolfgang is my everything. When my world crashed down on me, he was the one who pulled me out of the rubble. So many times, in so many ways.
Maybe it’s weird to say, but I can’t help but think of him as a brother. So I guess I’m just scared. That people are going to view Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark as threatening. And I just… I can’t… I can’t take this news, right now. Guess I should just get back to work.

You keep reblogging Apriltello stuff {of them in Rise where they're siblings} and idk if I can keep following you cuz of that sifjsuf I have the tag blocked but Tumblr tends to say when things are blocked tags and what the tag is-
that's entirely fair!
I totally get where you're coming from with the whole they're siblings thing. I know there's like a whole debate or whatever in the fandom whether or not shipping 2018 apriltello is incest or not but I'm fairly neutral on that debate, I think it just depends on how you view their relationship (if they see each other as siblings or as best friends). I do follow some people who ship apriltello so i suppose thats why I sometimes reblog content for that ship but in general I dont really ship it.
I do in fact see donnie and april as having a sibling relationship, and none of the content that I make for rottmnt will have apriltello as a romantic ship. But also since I follow people who do ship apriltello and who make art for it I may reblog stuff for the ship if the art is nice. Mostly if I do reblog apriltello stuff, its less because I like the ship and more because I think the art is nice
Anyways this turned into way more of a lengthy reply than I thought it was going to be, but regardless I'm not going to begrudge you for unfollowing me because I totally get not liking this ship

Let's say J & S hooked up the summer before 7th year and officially together for that last year. Do you think that would throw off the Mauraders dynamic? Like the four of them are hanging out in the common room as usual but then when Peter wants to ask James a question he notices that he's whispering in Sirius's ear (in a flirty manner) and he feels that he's intruding. I'm curious on your thoughts, I know prongsfoot are super close already but would their core group notice a shift?
ooooh this is super interesting.
so, from experience, i know that having two friends in a group hook up/date can seriously mess w the existing dynamics, often not in a Fun way. so yeah, definitely there’ll be some difference.
but also, the way i hc james and sirius, i can’t help but think that the difference won’t be that extreme. i mean, the way i see it, they were always super close (two bodies, one brain/soul), always physically affectionate, and always bouncing off each other effortlessly, right? people in established relationships can’t come close to that kind of closeness. so hooking up or dating would only really change the physicality of their interactions, i think. add in sex or kisses—the former won’t (probably, unless ur thinking exhibitionism like i am) crop up in public, and the latter might be subjected to jeers/teasing/groans/hexes etc. normal friend stuff.
you know that whole metaphor about a frog in hot water? i think that describes the other marauders v well. they’ve become so accustomed to j&s being their nauseatingly codependent self that a romantic/sexual relationship won’t be that different.
if james is whispering flirty nothings in sirius’ ear now, he was probably doing something similar before too, just not complimenting sirius’ ass or his eyes or his blush ykno?
