Notes
Sorry for the wait, @crazybananacakes! I absolutely loved your prompt and the angst potential - so much so that I ended up writing, like, 20 different outlines with different Zelinks and "what if" scenarios. I ended up going with Classic Zelink here for the anniversary today (38!!!), even if BOTW/TOTK Zelink was the obvious option... but believe me, now I have plenty of other angst and "what if" one-shots on the backburner. It's actually a little crazy. Here, both the Zeldas are one in the same - and there are plenty of other headcanons sprinkled in. I would love to make this a larger fic!
WARNING: BLOOD.
Sneak Peak
《 Mist coats the air in a suffocating serenity. The world, under pouring rain, wears a mask as if it were at ease— but the rushing of footsteps through growing puddles of mud urges it to wake up. Trickles of red drop down to stain the layer of water.
The storm thuds against the earth in a rage-filled song the further on this trail goes, washing it away with further ferocity by the minute.
Two silhouettes seek some illusion of refuge in the merciless weather. They are outlined only by the occasional crack of ruby lightning.
An identical scar marks their intertwined hands.
Both fight to take the lead— not with hostility, but desperation. The taller of the two, a young woman, pulls along her companion for the majority of the time despite his consistent (yet silent) protests.
Tears draw out thin strings of velvet and cling the curls of her hair to her face, pale with something reminiscent of illness. Her eyes— a dull, silver-blue— droop with the look of someone already long dead. She shakily gazes back to the stumbling boy she leads onward, but this lowers her guard just enough for her legs to finally give out beneath her. 》

The Color of the Sunrise (Zelink Week '22 Day 2: Age)
@zelinkweekofficial
I need to leave for work in like thirty seconds but here, have this some AoL Zelink!
She hoped she wasn’t being ungrateful. To be alive, to wake from the dark, heavy veil of sleep and open her eyes after six hundred long years… it was a miracle, a blessing from the gods… for Zelda herself, anyway.
But sometimes, she would hear Link tell one of his travel stories, or she would listen to a report brought before the Queen, or even so much as look out one of the window, and think, ‘what kind of princess trades her own safety for that of her people’s?”
Right now, she was walking amidst the garden, eyeing the clusters of struggling plant-life in place of the teeming flowerbeds she remembered from Before. She was in awe of how her people had endured, and how swiftly the land was healing now that Ganon was gone…
But endurance and healing would never have been needed, had Zelda been strong enough—or if Zelda had simply died. She knew her friends had sacrificed much to keep her safe, back then, one in particular sacrificing everything.
And Zelda had lived, and the Triforce was protected…but what had her people suffered in exchange?
She crouched down, staring at one iris flower that had just managed to bloom.
Zelda knew it was foolish to dwell on might-have-beens six centuries old, but she couldn’t seem to help herself. The thoughts whirled around and around in her head, like keese attacking her mind—
“Are you all right, princess?”
Zelda screeched, losing her balance, and would have fallen flat on her back if Link hadn’t reached out and managed to snag her hands at the last moment, steadying her. They froze like that, Zelda crouching and Link bent over the iris flower awkwardly, standing on his tiptoes to keep from disturbing it.
“A hand up would be nice, thank you,” Zelda managed to say, and Link obligingly pulled her into a standing position. Once she was up, however, Link didn’t let go. Instead he stared intently at her face, a faint frown furrowing his brows.
“Is something wrong?”
Zelda opened her mouth to spout the usual platitudes; “I’m fine” or “There’s nothing wrong, you don’t need to worry about me,” but something stopped her. Link’s bright blue eyes burned into hers, earnest and kind and determined, and it sent a warm, swooping sensation throughout her belly. Flustered, she dropped her gaze, staring down at the ground and the iris bloom between them.
“I… when I fell asleep, I know the kingdom was already beginning to decline… but we were still in a Golden Age, back then. And now…” She bit her lip, fixated on the stunted shape of the iris’ petals. “Your world is hurt, and it’s all my fault. What sort of princess does that make me?”
“A wise one.” Link’s voice rang out immediately, so full of confidence that it brought Zelda’s head snapping up to stare at him. He squeezed her hands gently, his expression warm and sincere. “You gave us a chance. If you hadn’t protected the triforce, who knows what could have happened? But you did. And Hyrule might be hurting, but we’re still here. See?”
He went down to his knees, tugging gently on Zelda’s hands until she followed him, and they knelt there, on either side of the iris. Link smiled down at the flower, his face so animated and full of hope it took Zelda’s breath away. “The flowers are blooming again.”
Zelda swallowed hard, glancing down at the poor stunted bloom. “But, it looks—”
Link squeezed her hands again. “I know it’s not what it could be, yet, but it’s early days. Give it time, and it’ll bloom just as it used to. I promise.”
The princess blinked her eyes furiously, trying to stave off the dampness that was beginning to cling to them. “But the Golden Age is over.”
“I know.” Link’s mouth quirked up at one corner. “But who says this age can’t be golden, as well? Every sunrise is different, but they’re all still golden.”
There was no point in trying to stop the tears now—Zelda could feel them rolling down her cheeks. Link let go of her hands, but before Zelda could protest, his hands were cradling her cheeks, gently wiping away her tears with his thumbs.
“Besides…” He swallowed hard, and for a moment seemed as if he would leave the sentence hanging, a flush turning the tips of his ears red. But then a light came into his eyes, and the courage in his spirit carried the day as the words spilled from his mouth, stumbling and nervous but so sincere it took Zelda’s breath away. “…it may not be very heroic of me, but I’m grateful everything happened the way it did. Because I got to meet you.”
His words were like the sun, reaching deep into Zelda’s heart and filling every place they touched with light. She was sobbing, and smiling, and Link was pressing his forehead against hers and the touch filled her soul with joy.
“I’m so very grateful, too,” She managed to get out, the words thick and wet but full of the sound of smiling, “that I could live in this age with you.”
And between them, the iris petals swayed gently in the warm breeze of spring.

Chapter 1 - The Boy's Left Hand
A branch lightly taps against glass with every sway of the breeze. It repeatedly clicks against a window, sunlight obnoxiously highlighting this motion as it pours indoors.
The brightness falls on the face of a boy in rabbit-themed pajamas, lying only half-under a blanket with one arm hanging off his bed entirely. He cringes, taking in a deep inhale as he tries to resist the temptation to open his eyes.
..
The teen caves, however, lifting his head and drowsily peering out the window. He reaches up, annoyed, promptly shutting the curtains before sloppily flopping back to bed.
..
A moment later, he slightly shifts… Immediately followed by him darting up. He does a double-take, rushing to reopen the curtain. He stares blankly, his expression dropping.
"...The sun's out already–" The boy murmurs aloud.
He tosses his blanket to the floor, scrambling back into a stand and nearly slipping on it in the process, "Impa's gonna kill me!" Running to a chest full of clothes, he gathers everything he'll need for the day and races to get changed. He stumbles to the door as he struggles to pull his boots on without bothering with the laces, "I can't believe I did it again… 'When am I gonna learn?' I didn't even go to bed late!"
The jumbled kid trips from his movement, having to quickly catch himself with a hand on a desk. He spares a glance to the desk, swiping a pair of gloves off its surface before running out into the town.
. . .
Sooner or later, he reaches his destination: The grand North Palace of Hyrule. It's an extravagant structure on a hill, its walls housing the innermost area of the central village andthe home of the King of Hyrule himself. It's already bustling with fellow castle workers moving about and knights supervising the area. However, there's still an ironic... Lack of energy. The boy is certain there is something he is forgetting, but he just can't put his finger on it. As he moves in towards the main palace's entry doors, he spots a familiar attendant; one of his co-workers.
The attendant is a woman slightly older than him, wearing a thin orange dress. She is busy transporting a small wooden box when the teen arrives, temporarily freeing an arm to stop him, "Look who's late again."
He lowers his head in shame, rubbing the back of it with his left hand, "...I know, I know– I'm sorry, really. Need help with that, Rosa?"
"Rosalie." She corrects him and shifts the box out of his reach, "It's quite alright, I've got it. I just stopped you since I figured you haven't had the time to check what day it is." That was the nicest way she could think of saying he still looks half asleep.
"If you're sure…" He is about walk right past her, but backtracks and glances at her again, "...Wait, huh?"
Rosalie looks to the passerby around them before lowering her voice, "(It's the Fourteenth, Link. You know how the King tends to get… Short… today. This same day, every year, no exceptions)."
It sets in almost as soon as she says the day. His expression shifts, a sort of guilt paining his gut, "Right... I understand. I'll help try and keep things easygoing today."
Rosalie nods, resuming her previous path– but takes one last pause. She turns her head back, "...Oh- And don't bother looking for Impa today, Link. I heard she won't be coming in. …But she requested you go handle duties with the King and see what he needs from you. ...You better hurry, all that in mind."
If the realization that he was late wasn't enough of a brick to the head on its own, that information definitely was... Crap. "Got it. Thanks–" He gives one last wave to Rosalie, then hurrying inside.
The Entrance Hall of the palace is a wide room, carefully carved pillars holding up the roof. However, there is absolutely no time to admire any further details! Link skids across the expensive carpet, taking the straight path attached to the room to reach the Throne Room. Once he reaches it, of course, he slows his pace and tries to pretend he has been professional this entire time.
The Royal Guards at the entrance of the Throne Room stop him nonetheless, only letting him in as an imposing voice from inside commands them to do so. Although Link has been working here for quite a while now, the guards tend to be cautious. Such is their job, he supposes, but he can't help but worry he's in trouble every time they stop him. Link makes an attempt to shove this to the back of his mind, however, approaching the throne of King Aidan of Hyrule and kneeling.
The King is an older man with fading brown hair that curls to the sides of his face. The crown he wears is one Link recognizes from paintings; it's one passed down the Royal Family according to his "mentor", Impa. The man stares down to Link with narrowed eyes from atop his elevated seat, taking a dreadful moment to even begin speaking, "I take it you're the boy Lady Impa put in charge?" Remaining kneeled, Link nods in reply, "...I have seen you with her before. Link, was it?"
"That's right, Your Majesty."
"...Hm." The King leans back in the throne, seeming to stare off beyond Link. His gaze is dull, but he remains present enough to continue his order, "I have a guest coming from the country beyond Death Mountain: a renowned physician. The mountain is forbidden to traverse, so she's taken a ship. She should be at the docks, and I want some supplies for her stay delivered there for when she arrives. ....Usually Impa would only organize such endeavors, but you're young. I am certain you can take care of it." He absentmindedly motions that Link is permitted to stand. Another attendant– positioned at the King's side– steps forth and hands the boy a leather bag. The observing monarch gives them a second to do so, but soon finishes from where he left off, "Everything is in that satchel. I ask that you're careful with it. …Now try and be punctual. Her journey has been long, and I am expecting to see her soon."
Link gazes down to the satchel. He can't help but wonder why the King would need a physician from outside of Hyrule. It seems like a lot of trouble when there are already physicians here... Could he be ill?
Regardless, the boy has his orders and intends to follow them. He politely bows to the King, before slinging the satchel over his shoulder and heading off to deliver to their highly-esteemed guest. Amidst his exit, however, the attendant who previously gave him the satchel subtly motions their hand to get his attention. Link spots this from the corner of his eye, slightly altering his course to reach them.
"(I advise you take a shortcut. There will be less of a walk going through the sealed wing)." They whisper, but make it evident they're just giving Link directions to not raise suspicion, "(There's an old passageway they used to use to evacuate the palace... You'll find a hidden entry behind a curtain there)."
Link blinks, taking a hint and lowering his voice as well, "(...I've seen the sealed wing before, but... Isn't it sealed for a reason)?"
"(It will be fine, I assure you. Most of us do it. Given His Majesty's mood... I thought I would let you in on it. We're all better off if everything is done efficiently... So pick up the pace.)"
"(Ahh- right)." The boy turns away to get going, although finding it ironic the person who stopped him told him to hurry it up. He nonchalantly walks past the guards to the East Hall, approaching the abandoned doors to the sealed wing. They only seem to realize he's passed after the fact, but proceed to do absolutely nothing to stop him.
Sealed wing... Such a misleading name, considering the huge doors lowly creak open the instant Link even nudges them. Huh. He chooses to accept this despite his internal questioning, daring to squeeze through the small opening he made for himself. His hands have to carefully stop the doors before they can thud shut, as he's convinced the convenience thus far has been a stroke of insane luck.
The wing of the castle before him collects dust as if it were a relic on display... To be left untouched for years until someone came finally broke in to search for its secrets. It almost feels wrong to be in here. An eerie chill rolls down his spine, as if he's entered a gravesite. Compared to the rest of the North Palace, it seems so... Neglected. There is an attempt to ignore such thoughts, Link knowing well that he needs to stay focused. So, rather than dwell on the overall creepiness of the place, he keeps an eye out for a curtain that could be hiding a passageway.
It's rather hard to see in the old place, only some cracks between the boards over the windows let in just enough light to make out some vague shape of his sureoundings. His gaze catches one curtain in particular that has become so loose that it touches the floor, on the verge of collapsing from the pole it has been set on. It certainly stands out, so he decides it's worth investigating. The trespasser approaches the curtain, pulling it out of the way– unexpectedly met with darkness as it slips from its last grip on the pole and tumble right on top of him. Link grunts. He fumbles to get the heavy, faded curtain off of his face, but in the action of doing so can hear it brush against something else that was on the wall behind it. A faint thump sounds soon after. In a short panic, Link shoots his head in that direction to be sure it wasn't enough of a mess to get him into trouble.
Fortunately for him, it was only an old painting. At least, he hopes that's fortunate. No one was bothering to look at the artwork, after all, if it's been rotting behind a curtain for who knows how long. Even so, a minor guilt nags at him; just enough for Link to crouch down, set the satchel he was given aside, and pick the painting up. He should at least hang it back up. But then he has to hury! It's only one job! Be punctual. He'd humiliate himself to the King of all people if he screwed up something so simple.
...Yet, despite this train of thought, he finds his focus going to the painting now that he holds it to the wall before him. He doesn't quite recognize the people portrayed. There's four figures in elegant attire: The Great King of Hyrule– the only one he does recognize– and two children. Of course, being of his... status... Link isn't very informed on Hyrulean history or lineage. He has no idea when the Great King was ruling, but he assumes the children are his own. It's odd he's never seen them before, in all the time he has worked in the palace. Then again, he had no idea people could sneak through this area for all that time.
The painting is surprisingly lively, for an image of royalty; especially one of the Great King. He is typically shown as this wise and powerful ruler, a man with all of the composure in the world. Impa has mentioned the truth in it, once or twice... Here, however, he almost appears to be concealing a smile. His right hand is on the shoulder of one child, his left on the other's. The girl on the right has no issue grinning, and the artist responsible for the piece had no hesitation to replicate that. She holds on to her brother's arm like a hug, and he seems much less than thrilled. It's sort of funny to Link; although the paint seems to be chipping. Some of the canvas curls on the right corner, torn. Although... A pale glint comes from beneath the rip as the dim sunlight peers into it. This glaringly snags his attention away from his task further, Link having to resist the urge to see what may be hidden beneath. Perhaps he could be imagining something there? His left hand had reached to pull the tear back further, but he decides against it. Rather, he brushes the dust off the artwork's surface.
...And that's when another glint pierces his vision. The boy blinks, now strangely fixated on the back of his raised hand. There is a marking now seared across it. Not a mere smidge of dirt, either. It's a perfectly aligned triangle made up of three smaller ones; a symbol synonymous with the kingdom of Hyrule. Convinced he's having a difficult time adjusting his eyes to the lighting, Link yanks his hand back and puts it directly under the rays coming between the boards. All it does is make the image clearer to him. With widened eyes, Link outright tries to rub the symbol off with his other hand. What did he just do? Why won't it disappear? The startled teen tries everything he can think of, shaking his hand as if it will just flutter off. None of these futile methods have any affect, much to his own dismay.
Quite disturbed at this point, he lifts his hand up and stares at it with a blankly shocked expression. After a little while, he finally mutters aloud to himself under the assumption he can make sense of this, "(...When did that get there? Why does it look like–)" Halfway through, he stops and snaps his gaze around. If he isn't alone, he'd rather know before he starts talking to himself like a crazy person. He luckily remains the only invader to the deteriorating hall. Either way, he determines he's still better off not speaking to a wall. Instead, he pats his person in search of a solution. Reaching into the pockets he had cut into his pants, he pulls out a single glove. There is a moment of his own dumbfoundedness.
"(...Huh? What happened to the other one?)" Here he goes, mumbling to no one again. Link searches for the right glove, assuming he dropped it at some point, but is without success. He lets out a frustrated huff, just slipping on the only glove he has over the peculiar addition to his hand. "(...Oh, nevermind! I got work to do!)" Finally, he needs his own advice. After sparing the painting a final glance, Link shakes his head and picks up the satchel again. From there, he rushes himself to find the right curtain that hides the passage.
. . .
Finding the right way was unsurprisingly time-consuming, but Link had eventually spotted a curtain that wasn't covered in as much dust. Obviously, it had been used more than the others... And he wishes he would have just noticed that in the first place. But wasted time aside, he had no problem traveling through the damp passageway to reach the docks. With the passage having been lit by torchlight, Link is quite relieved to feel natural sunlight land upon his face when he returns to the surface. He may... dislike it when it pressures him to wake up, though. The day has already begun, so it's not so much of a problem now.
A much shorter walk later, the ships have come into view. It looks like the passengers of the closest boat have already exited with their things. Link's shoulders slump slightly. He probably could have beaten it, if he didn't let himself get so distracted... But perhaps there's still time! They may not have been let off too long ago. He makes his way towards the crowds, keeping a firm grip on the satchel he must deliver so it isn't lost. Like his right glove, apparently. Who even loses something that's stuck in a pair?
The boy shakes his head again. He needs to quit wandering back to that. Besides, there's... More interesting things to think about than his concern over the hand. Yeah. The docks, for instance!
All of those ships... They've been to places he couldn't even imagine. He's been tied down to Hyrule Town for as long as he can remember. If he could just afford a trip like the one the physician he searches for has taken... That would be an adventure I'm itself. Perhaps then he'd have more to do than go back and forth as a delivery boy at best. Helping in the little ways is nice and all, of course... Yet just seeing the vast horizon wants to convince him otherwise. He is able to push through this longing, for now, taking the time to ask around to find where the physician should be preparing to depart to the castle from. Sooner or later, he does get a lead; finding physician near the railing overlooking the beach itself. It looks like some Hylian soldiers have already arrived to serve as her escorts... Probably due to him falling behind.
Holding back his embarrassment, Link clears his throat. The woman peers back, "Ah... I was told someone should be heading this way. You are the King's messenger, yes?"
"Something like that, ma'am." He simply offers the satchel of supplies to her, "This package contains some gifts from the King for your stay."
"Thank you, boy. I already have my escorts, so I shall be going. Should I be needed when I am not present in the palace, I'll be residing in Hyrule Town." The physician then simply goes on her way, the soldiers following her. Link politely nods to her as she departs, but lets out a low sigh once he's more or less alone in the crowd.
...All that work for a ten-second interaction. Oh, well.
Link rubs his gloved hand with his right, once more observing the busy environment. Not for too long, though, as he soon gets moving to return to work. After what happened before, he's going to take the usual route through town instead. The bustling voices and doorsteps of the docks fade as he moves on.
. . .
Once he nears the town of the North Palace, Link expects the buzz of activity to rebuild. Instead, he is met with the contrary. Being the new "capital" of Hyrule, formed by a young queen of Hyrule a couple of centuries before (or something like that), there's never a shortage of visitors... it's quieter today than most. He should have anticipated such, he supposes, but he still doesn't entirely understand it. The whole day thus far has been puzzling in general! The boy can't help but wonder if the world has just decided to go off-kilter for a day.
...
And, almost as if it read his mind, he catches a slight glow trying to peek out from beneath his glove. Of course, his hand needed to remind him of the unexplained appearance from before. Link must restrain himself from crumbling in defeat, as he had hoped to just forget what happened at all and realize later that he had imagined it for some reason. Slightly annoyed with whatever it is, Link fiddles with the base of the glove; he contemplates taking it off. Just as he lifts the base with his thumb, the light escapes enough to flash right in his eyes.
"Gh– Come on!" Now his own hand is inconveniencing him! Link rubs his eyes with his normal hand, hesitantly opening them again once a minute or so has passed. Thankfully, no people are out this far from the village's center to see whatever is going on at this rate... But a little orb of light is.
This is the point where Link isn't so sure what he's making up. For some time, his pupils fixate on the glow in a confused awe. Even so, he instinctively tries to reach for it and question its arrival. The words are stolen from him as the light zips away in a completely random direction. Its sudden motion alarms the boy, for certain, but the debate within him rules that he should follow on a mere whim.
It twists through the outskirts of town, somehow able to tactfully avoid the sights of villagefolk. It is to such an extent that Link cannot tell if it is intentional or not... Surely, a literal ball of light has no sense of direction. Then again, how would he know?! This kind of thing isn't normal at all! He follows it, nonetheless, and by the time he considers leaving it be it has already halted.
The orb has stopped in front of the door to a vaguely familiar home, but it certainly is not his own. This leaves him a bit frazzled, to be frank. Why lead him here?
"(...You're kidding, right?)" Link whisper-shouts over to it. If he really is seeing things, he's going to have a lot of excuses to make for lurking around. By all means, he wants to turn around! But with his words, the light has just... Stopped. Somehow, this feels like it is staring at him. Judging him for not trusting it.
Begrudgingly, Link approaches the front door to the house. The light politely moves out of the way like a person holding the door open for another, and that alone is freakish to him. Swallowing his persistent hesitation, he obliges to the likely-illusionary guide's wishes... And knocks. The instant his hand maks contact with the door, the little light swirls back into his glove.
Initially, the only response is the boy's own instant regret. An unnerving silence follows... Until a voice he knows speaks up from the other side of the door.
"...Who is it? I thought I made it clear I won't be seeing anyone today." An older voice; one collected and dignified.
It sinks in faster than a boulder a river. He knows whose home this is now... But he'd be in deeper trouble if he turned away now.
"...It's– It's Link."
..
"...I see. ...Come in." The voice didn't seem entirely sure about allowing him to enter, but they've permitted it nonetheless.
Link inhales and slowly accepts his fate. He turns the knob on the door and enters in the most stiff manner possible. To his clashing senses of both shock and expectation, it the light has led him to the home of the only person he's ever been close to.
It's led him to Impa, sitting beside a window with a unprecedented perfect view of the North Palace.
End of Chapter 1.
Notes:
This is a little long for a first chapter, my bad. Anyway, you may have already noticed differences and/or additions in the story. Asks are always open and will be answered! I also take drawing requests.
Previous Chapter: Prologue
About:
"The Adventure of Link: Hero Reborn" is a loose interpretation of the second LoZ game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game itself was made in a time where story elements weren't entirely front and center, and the developers were testing the waters with new game mechanics. This serves as a way to tell the story in the light of later installments in the franchise as inspiration, but in no way is directly tied to canon. It is merely my headcanons and just having some fun!
Obligatory Disclaimers:
I, quite obviously, don't own LoZ II: The Adventure of Link. This is simply a fanstory that serves as a loose narrative adaptation of the game, which has little storyline beyond the backstory given by the manual. It is meant to function similarly to the LoZ mangas (which you should read at the next opportunity) and doesn't entirely operate within canon. I wanted to tell a story from one of my favorite games in light of newer installments. You will find a lot of differences between the comic and the game itself, but also similarities for obvious reasons. For instance, this Link is a reincarnation of the Hero of Hyrule, rather than the same boy. But this is all just for fun and isn't meant to be taken too seriously. I highly recommend you play the original game, too! It was my first LoZ game and holds a special place in my obsessions. :)

the funniest person on tumblr is the person who pointed out if u ship zelink for Twilight Princess and for Ocarina of Time its incest bc. yeah. that Link and Zelda would be cousins. that isnt even the only time that would occur ALTTP Link canonically has the blood of the hero as well and its heavily implied Wind Waker Link is also descended from a hero. this is one of the many reasons why "Zelda and Link are destined to be together throughout every life" gets really weird really quickly!! also why u should play games other than Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild lol. itd not that hard to find oldee games online or play them on nintendo online they have the og loz, aol, alttp, la, and mc!

Continuing off of this au because I'm having way too much fun with it
Concept for 10-12 year old Link in Zelda 1 (would have taken place in 2004)
Zelda gets a HTTYD night ride on a motorcycle for self indulgent reasons
Whenever you die in Zelda 2 you get whisked all the way back to Zelda's palace, so in this au Link actually sets up base in the palace during his second quest, returning to rest in between dungeons and planning out his next move (yes he did give Zelda a blanket)
outfit concepts and doodles :PP Zelda wears her crown as a necklace now, easier to keep it safe

100 years later BOTW
Character Headcanons
Hylia's Chosen Hero
Firstborn child given at birth to the knightly priesthood to specifically serve the Goddess Hylia, doesn't know who parents are (likely has some siblings through whom SS Link is descended). Imprisoned for treason by Lord Daiginas for "preaching blasphemy" after he foresaw the rise of the Demon King. Orville was his squire/charge before he was imprisoned
Skyward Sword
Both Link and Zelda are only children. Zelda's mother Mia died in childbirth, Link's parents Sibyelle and Selik died of a sickness that passed through when he was a boy. Almost killed him too but Zelda pulled him through, first unrealized incident of Goddess power
Hero of Men
King Gustaf was the father of the HOM Zelda, both he and her mother Lea are still alive
This Link is a gardener who works at the palace, whose parents died as a child in a house fire, and doesn't remember their names. Friends with Zelda but doesn't end up with her
Minish Cap
This Link lost his parents as a child, doesn't know who father was and mother died in childbirth. Taken in by his grandfather, the grandson of the previous Link, and trained as a Blacksmith.
Zelda is daughter of King Daltus and Queen Zelda, who also died in childbirth, have been best friends since they were children as Smith and Daltus are friends. Don't end up together though, and Link later travels to find out who his father was and if he's still alive.
4 Sword
This Link is the great grandson of Minish Cap Link, and has been training as a priest with Zelda. His parents are both still alive, Father also named Link though didn't have a grand adventure, and his mother is named Ethlinn
Zelda has been training as a priestess though her parents King Daltus III and Queen Seline would prefer her to focus on her queenly duties and not old legends.
Ocarina of Time
Link's Parents were Banzetta and Loretta, both killed in the Hyrulean Civil War
Zelda's mother Etain died during the Civil War as well, her father is King Cereus
Malink kids--Pola and Meino, daughter and son, TP Link is great grandson of Pola.
Twilight Princess
Zelda's father is King Daphnes Nohansen, but due to timeline changes he passed on peacefully a few years ago. She is an only child and her mother Zelda died when she was a young girl in a riding accident.
Link's parents Panna and Teofil passed away due to an illness that came through when he was 14, and has been taken care of by the townsfolk since then. He ends up with Ilia and they have 3 daughters, Ninian, Ilta and Ria
4 Sword Adventures
This Zelda is the young Queen of Hyrule. Her parents, Zelda and Pyrus, died in a shipwreck a few years ago. Link is already known to be the Chosen Hero but is untested. His father Stefan was a knight and was killed by one of the monsters of Hyrule, his mother Agata is still alive and works as Baker in the palace.
A Link to the Past
Link's father was Rune, a knight at the  palace, and Queen Zelda. Zelda is his younger half sister. Queen dies giving birth, Rune dies fighting one of Ganon's Demons. Sigil, Rune's brother, also a  knight of Hyrule raises him
He and Zelda have an unfortunate Luke and Leia situation at first (nothing happens beyond that cheek kiss) but they get it sorted out eventually
A Link Between Worlds
Link parents are Arn and Medilia, apprenticed him to a Blacksmith, still alive, has one younger brother Bram, still alive
Zelda's parents, Zelda and Kai also still alive, has younger siblings, 2 younger brothers Abbe and Aldo
Legend of Zelda
Sleeping Zelda's brother named Gustaf, and is the great grandfather of LOZ Zelda, who is recently orphan by time of game, only child of King Harkinian
Link is an orphan. Has been on his own since 7 years old, wandering the land. Ends up with Sleeping Zelda who decides to travel with him. First Zelda continues to rule and they come and visit her.
Wind Waker
Link is 2 years older than Aryll, their parents Ari and Liann  ship went down in a storm when Aryll was 3. Grandmother is maternal. He and Tetra date for a bit as teenagers but then just end as friends
Tetra is a descendant of alternate TP Zelda, her hair will darken as she gets older like her mother. Her mother was Tercia and her father is unknown. Tetra is great granddaughter of antediluvian/tp Zelda
Spirit Tracks
Zelda is the granddaughter of Tetra and Link is the great grandson of Link. Zelda is an only child but Link has several siblings at home, an older sister Liane and 2 younger brothers Loren and Levin. Zelink does actually end up together.
Hyrule Warriors
Ganon's soul being split in four happened due to the 4 Sword in 4SA, that Link is the great grandson of 4SA Link who became a Knight of Hyrule. His twin sister Linkle was separated from him when their parents Tymon and Camma (both Knights) disappeared (sucked into the Twilight Realm) and their memories messed up a bit due to Cia's time manipulation but they'll find eachother again. He's just friends with his Zelda. He and Linkle eventually go on a journey to find their parents in the Twilight Realm)
Zelda is Queen, her father Daltus having died during a battle as a child, her mother Cairn was Queen regent for a while
BotW
Link's father is named Bayern, Knight of Hyrule, younger sister Farrah (12) Mother Ola died in childbirth with Farrah. Both father and sister die in Calamity release.

Link closed the application and breathed a sigh of relief. He almost slipped up there, for a moment. If there was one thing he didn’t want, it was for xSilentPrincessx to know who he was. She might never speak to him again.
After all, he considered it himself, when he found out.
Tucking himself under the covers, he prayed he could squeeze in some sleep before the alarm went off.
Link rubbed his eyes as he trudged through the hallway the next morning. He managed a little over three hours before he had to get up and catch the bus. Having chosen Hyrule’s only art school to finish his secondary education, the routes were long and quiet as kids caught an extra hour of sleep before the bus pulled into the parking lot.
Just as he turned the corner, his shoulder collided into another’s. Long, blonde hair fluttered in his vision before he instinctively reached out to steady her by the elbow.
And then immediately let go.
Princess Zelda Bosphoramous Hyrule stumbled slightly before regaining her bearings, then straightened her stack of books and papers before flashing him a small smile. Her collared dress swayed slightly at her knees, light and springy in a way she never allowed herself to be.
“Thank you…”—her brows furrowed prettily—“Link? Am I right?”
He gave a minute nod.
“Yes, well. I’ll see you in calc then?”
Managing to find his voice this time, he stuttered, “Yes, Princess Zelda.”
“Zelda is fine,” she said politely, though something bit at the edge.
He waited until she was down the hall before pulling out his slate and selecting his chat with xSilentPrincessx. His message to her was short.
i hope your day goes well
Distantly, there was a familiar chime. Unable to resist, he lounged against the wall, watching from the corner of his eye as Princess Zelda paused to retrieve her slate from her bag. She balanced it and her books with a refined grace, neither hesitating nor fumbling in ways anyone else surely would have. Fingers flew across the screen to unlock it, and another smile, one more genuine and soft, stretched across her lips. His heart leapt into his throat.
She typed a message, then shoved the slate back in her bag, expression schooled to her usual stoicism before she continued down the hall. All along the way, the other students stopped to stare, but none spoke to her. Three months since her transfer here and she was still a novelty to them.
He sighed, shaking his head. In his hands, the slate vibrated and brightened with a notification: 1 New Message.
He opened it with a swipe of his thumb.
Thanks! Goddess knows I need it. I’m already running into people all over the place! Ready for the day to be over.
His grip tightened on the device and he gnawed at his lower lip. If only he could talk to her in person like he could through the anonymity of his screen name. But he was just another student in this small school, and Princess Zelda would never willingly speak to him without cause. The only reason she knew his name was because they shared several classes together.
Taking a breath, he kept his response simple.
same
Almost instantly, she replied: Talk to you during lunch?
Yes, he began to type out, then deleted. Of course, he tried, but for some reason, it didn’t fit. Always, he finalized, and if she ended up thinking him charmed by her, she wouldn’t be wrong.

I read your Warriors break down. Break down the Linked Universe's Hyrule and Wild because they are my favorites and I love how similar/different they can be.
Oof I’m so sorry this has just been sitting in my asks. I haven’t been super motivated or in the creative mindset lately. :( I’m sorry it took so long! Thank you for participating in the ask game @yusuke96universe!
Ask game is here
Hyrule:
Best background boy. I’m sorry I know he’s your favorite but for me? It’s kind of a mess after Wars & Four. So??? I think that makes him my number 3? He’s very soft but will kick your ass if you don’t take care of yourself and love yourself, and he’s very fun to write! (I love writing caring friend characters!) He’s quiet but still takes no shit, and is able to lead when he needs to.
I headcanon him as aro-ace ;)
I know this is super popular, but Legend & Hyrule is adorable.
I don’t think I have an unpopular opinion for him?
I have not played the original loz or the adventure of link, but I know he kisses Zelda at the end of AoL, and I want that un-canonized. Aro-ace hyrule supremacy.
Wild:
I’ll admit it. Breath of the Wild was how I got into the Linked Universe, so he was naturally a favorite pretty much instantly. As time has gone on, (and I got into the four swords manga fandom...) I started to appreciate other characters more. Wild himself is a great character, and I definitely still like him, just not as much as I used to, and now I can appreciate the more overlooked characters. I’ve seen a lot of different characterizations for him, with some being a stoic, traumatized, silent hero, and others being a playful, chaotic, loud character. Either way, he’s great, and his story has so many different ways of being interpreted and completed, that messing with how he’s perceived is very fun. Overall, he’s a very interesting person who can play many roles without seeming out of character.
Mipha and Sidon. This obviously depends on the time we’re setting this at. During linked universe, I generally go with him dating Sidon. (After all, Mipha may be pretty, but she’s also pretty dead.)
PLATONIC ZELINK. I love Flora and Wild having a platonic relationship so much. Unpopular opinion, but I feel like it would just be weird if they got together at the end of Breath of the Wild. Not to mention, platonic relationships are very important, but are often portrayed as not as important as romantic ones, which is very frustrating and annoying.
Stated above. :) I don’t think I have any other unpopular opinions on him.
I’m sorry I just wish there had been canon linkxmipha that was explicitly stated. (I mean,  Mipha was literally going to PROPOSE but believe what you want zelink shippers.) One, because I like the ship, and two because then we’d be seeing WAY more platonic zelink, and I LOVE platonic botw Zelink. (Maybe even more than lipha? That’s a bold statement but platonic zelink is amazing.)

What is ruining The Legend of Zelda stories?
This is going to be a pretty long blog about what I feel is possibly ruining the Zelda games.
The Legend of Zelda used to have good stories, stories that didn't focused on cliched main character romance for example. But since I played Skyward Sword, the stories have become melodramatic, overly romantic and non-zelda like. SS and BOTW both have overly emotional stories and a lovey-dovey Zelink relationship and didn't feel like a Zelda game. Both games had the worst incarnations of Link and Zelda, both of them seeming too mean in the game such as Zelda constantly teasing Link and is jealous of Link's loftwing and Link insulting a mogma who tried to help him get his things back. BOTW has Zelda scolding link such as in the frog scene and Link selfishly ignoring a man named Bozai's feelings in favor of sand boots. All he wants to talk about are those sand boots! And not to mention, both SS and BOTW Zeldas were over-emotional Zeldas having lovey-dovey relationships with the protagonists and that was just non-zelda to me. Yes, AOL had the kiss but the games, especially in SS both sort of had love plots between the protagonist and the titular character and it didn't feel like a Zelda game to me. Also, SS and BOTW Zelda being overemotional did not feel like a Zelda game to me.
While the gameplays are still good, well, except SS had just okay but flawed gameplay such as an empty world, sometimes frustrating controls, backtracking, hand-holding, railroading, linear gameplay, some annoying quests such as chasing after those annoying kikwis and tadtones. There's a lot of things wrong with that game and I can go on forever about what is wrong with it. It's too bad SS had focused too much on its story to even do much with its gameplay.
Now, I can't say anything about the ds Zelda games or WW because I haven't played them yet but am planning on to. But the last great Zelda game with a good story I had played was TP. BOTW is alright but not as good as TP.
I noticed that Shigeru Miyamoto has only been the general producer of the last two official 3D Zelda games, but not just simply the producer. Eiji Aonuma has taken over producing the last two Zelda games instead of being the director and I think Aonuma being the director and Miyamoto being the producer were part of why the Zelda series had charm. Instead, a guy named Hidemaro Fujibayashi has taken over being the director. This change in staff roles seemed to have caused the Zelda series to drop the ball. I think Aonuma should just stick with producing only the remakes, not an original game.
The result are two of the most recent Zelda games that seem more anime like. Such as having the cliched childhood friend turned implied romance trope in SS. You know I am not a fan of anime and this is why I have a problem with SS and BOTW being more anime like.
Anyway, these are my opinions on the games and what is ruining the Zelda franchise. I love the Zelda games and I do not want to see it go down this route of a good franchise slowly becoming not so good. These were my opinions on what I feel should change to give the Legend of Zelda series back its charm.

Zelink for every game you've played :D
That is so many games … but CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
Legend of Zelda (1):
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
I mean, I guess? Haha, there was really nothing here. Since this was the very first game, character development basically didn’t exist, so like … I really don’t have an opinion one way or the other. People can do what they want, and I’m not against it, but I personally just don’t see anything there worth really talking about or shipping, haha.
Adventure of Link:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
Same deal as above. My memories of AoL are really hazy, but iirc this is the game where Zelda is asleep for the vast majority of it, but also where we see an implied kiss at the end, which … honestly feels a lot like “here, you are rewarded with a gf” to me, which is why I “nonono” that. I’m mostly neutral, but also kind of really “meh” on it as well.
A Link to the Past / Link’s Awakening / Oracle of Ages/Seasons:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
I’m kind of neutral on shipping Zelda with the Hero of Worlds, because while I think there could be potential there, they spend virtually no time together and, in the Oracle games, the fact that they barely know each other shows. The fact that Link could mistake Marin, who has deep red hair, for Zelda (who is blonde) seems to further cement this to me. Yes, he was half out of it due to the fact that he had just woken up after being knocked unconscious during that storm at sea, but the fact remains that hair color is one of the most immediately obvious markers of a person’s appearance and he still made that mistake. This is no doubt due to the fact that he and Zelda have spent barely any time together, I feel. Additionally, Link did spend quite a lot of time with Marin, and the two of them even went on a date. While I’m not at all opposed to multi-shipping and while it’s clear that he and Marin cannot be endgame (I mean she might have become a seagull ffs), I’d much prefer to ship him with Marin before Zelda, hands down.
Ocarina of Time / Majora’s Mask:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
Again, this is a case where Link and Zelda didn’t really spend a lot of time together … and the majority of the time they did spend together was spent under deceit with Zelda pretending to be Sheik. I understand why she couldn’t tell him who she was (and I think that Link would understand, too) but that doesn’t change the fact that a good chunk of their relationship was spent with Zelda pretending to be someone else. And before anyone says anything, no, gender is not an issue here, especially since I am fully on-board with the headcanon of OoT!Zelda being genderfluid. The issue here is that Zelda pretended to be a completely different person entirely. Even if she had pretended to be a female different person, the same issue would exist. I think that, regardless of the necessity of the lie, Link would still have some trust issues, both in the sense of “if she lied to me about that, she could lie about other things,” and “don’t you trust me enough to tell me?” Then again, the second she dropped the disguise Ganondorf got her, so. :/
There’s also the issue of how she sends him back to his childhood at the end of the game. Link doesn’t speak, so we don’t know exactly how he felt about that decision she made, but she also doesn’t ask him if that’s what he wants, she decides that’s what he wants. And true, he does hand the Ocarina of Time over when she tells him to, but … that’s just it. She tells him to. The exact line is, “Link, give the ocarina to me. As a Sage, I can use it to return you to your original time.” Now, Link’s feelings on this are completely open to interpretation. It depends on how you characterize him and how you interpret his body language. But I just rewatched the scene (in both the original N64 graphics and the 3DS remaster), and it looks to me like he has a bit of hesitancy there—like he doesn’t necessarily want to, but technically the Ocarina of Time does belong to the royal family and, anyway, it’s a directive from the Princess of Hyrule. Can he really say no? Like, I guess he could refuse, but … mmmhh. He seems conflicted. But regardless of how he does or doesn’t seem conflicted, I do still think the fact that Zelda doesn’t ask him if this is what he wants is an issue. She decides that it’s what best. And whether the Triforce of Wisdom gives her insight that makes her right or not (and considering the timeline split, I think that’s debatable—I think that it would have been better to leave time business to the one who’s the Hero of it), I still don’t think the fact that Zelda thinks she can make huge life decisions for Link makes for an entirely healthy relationship right off the bat. I think they’d need to work on it.
That said, I do ship this in the context of Rose Zemlya’s fics (The Return and Reconciliation and all the one-shots and drabbles in-between), because in her fics they do work on it. They actually get to talk (and, well, fight) about Zelda’s tendency to deceive and lie because she feels it’s what’s best, as well as her removal of Link’s autonomy in the decision at the end of OoT. Additionally, I enjoy the way she characterizes both of them and think it works well. But outside of those fics, I’m neutral on it (kind of “ehh”), and in the end would probably rather ship Link with others (such as, for instance, Malon). I also think that, personality-wise, Zelda and Ruto could work well, though the fact that Ruto is a Zora gives me pause, as you know. XD
The Wind Waker / Phantom Hourglass:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
I looooove Link and Tetra! While I do take issue with the way Tetra was damseled multiple times so that Link could rescue her (though this is typical of Zelda games), and while I also take issue with how Tetra is mysteriously and disgustingly whitewashed the second she is revealed to be Zelda (though that has nothing to do with the ship), altogether I think that Link/Tetra is a wonderful ship, and this was the first time that I undoubtedly shipped a Link/Zelda pair.
To begin with, one of the things that I really like about the Hero of Winds and Tetra is that they are both hotheaded and both levelheaded at different times. Link is provoked by Aryll’s capture and Ganondorf’s taunting; he chases after his sister and loses his temper and attack Ganondorf, both actions of which were poorly thought-out and result in him needing rescuing, by Tetra. However, Tetra likewise loses her temper when her crew is threatened, when she is captured, and acts recklessly to save Link from Ganondorf (which results in both of them needing to be rescued by the Rito lmfao). She’s not immune from thinking irrationally or impulsively, and I actually think that she would be more prone to losing her temper / getting annoyed in casual situations, whereas Link would be calmer and more level-headed. In this sense, I think they balance each other out really well.
Of course, both Link and Tetra are about twelve-years-old, so they have a lot of growing up to do! I don’t think either of them are in a romantic mindset by the time the game ends. However, they do go sailing off to find a “new Hyrule” together, and we know thanks to Spirit Tracks that they succeed (doesn’t mean they start the new royal family, of course—just means that they find new land together). I think that there’s plenty of potential there for when they grow up, and I also think that Aryll would be 100% on-board. (A shipper on deck, if you will. ;D)
Twilight Princess:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
I have nothing against it, but I also don’t ship it, tbh. I say “maybe” because they could always get to know each other post-game, could grow to care for each other, could grow to have feelings for each other—but that’s all hypothetical. They don’t bond at all over the course of the game (Zelda is barely in it, tbh), and I don’t really see potential there for them in canon. There’s no real interest, Zelda is barely a presence in the story. So I’m not against it, but I don’t really ship it, either. There’s not enough for me to.
Spirit Tracks:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
I only played Spirit Tracks once and I honestly don’t remember it very well, so I’m afraid I can’t give an indepth analysis on this one. However, I do remember really loving their interactions throughout the game, and that’s key—this Link and Zelda have plenty of time to get to know each other and interact, and it shows. I think that they were really cute and that, while (once again) they’re young, there’s a high probability that they could develop feelings for each other in the future.
Skyward Sword:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
This probably would have been a “MY HEART,” but then BotW showed me what “MY HEART” really means. More on that in a second, though. ;)
I really, really like what SS did with Link and Zelda. They’re childhood friends, and that shows; it’s clear that they care for each other a great deal, that Zelda is protective of him when it comes to the bullying he receives from Groose and the others, but that he’s just as protective of her when it comes to any threats. There’s an element of playfulness in their relationship, in that she teases him for being a sleepyhead, she’s not afraid to play around with him, she knows he’ll take it well. They’re honestly very sweet with each other, and I swear the scene where he takes her hand and drops into a kneel before her squeezes my heart every single time. (As does the scene where she seals herself away, tells him that he’ll have to wake her up this time, and he cries as he leans against the crystal, damn.) I will say that it does bum me out a bit that Zelda is damseled (sealing herself was an action she undertook as part of her own plan, so I’m not talking about that—I’m talking about when Ghirahim kidnaps her to resurrect Demise), but again, that’s par for the course with Zelda games, so I can forgive it.
I do think that this is the game they’re the most canon in, though. We know that this Zelda is the one who went on to form the Hyrulean royal family (and that all other Zeldas are descended from her), and I mean, their song when flying on the loftwing in the beginning is called “Romance.” I think we know who her king was, js.
Breath of the Wild:
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
THE BEST ZELINK TO DATE, ALL OTHER ZELINKS CAN TAKE A SEAT PLEASE.
The best part of this Zelda/Link pair is that it is undoubtedly a slow burn. They knew each other for quite a long time even prior to Link’s near death. In Zelda’s diary, she notes that “he” has been selected to be her personal guard, with the emphasis hers. This implies that she knew him beforehand, no doubt because he was already training to be a knight, as his father had been before him. (Often times knights were nobility, so it’s incredibly possible that she even knew him from noble court prior to his entering in to be a knight.) Despite knowing each other beforehand, however, they weren’t friends. We know that Zelda’s dislike of Link wasn’t really personal—it was wrapped up in a lot of her own issues and insecurities, and how she projected her feelings onto him—but all the same, the fact remains that although they knew each other and had a history, they weren’t close. This means that we see them grow closer over time.
While I am admittedly rather “ehhh” at the way her feelings shift is carried out at first, that we see her reconsider in a “rescue romance” type of light when he saves her from the Yiga assassins, I do appreciate that despite the framing of the memory it wasn’t really shown to make her fall instantly in love with him. Rather, it opened her eyes to the fact that she should get to know him better, that he doesn’t hate her, that she should make an attempt to talk with him. And she does, and they do. They grow closer, get to know each other, become friends first after such a rocky start and then let feelings develop. And what I really, really love is that Zelda never loses her complexity through any of this. Even when it comes to the moment when her powers awaken, although we do know for canonical fact that it was her love for Link that allowed her powers to awaken, I also feel like Zelda throwing herself in-between him and the Guardian Stalker wasn’t just because she loved him, but was also because she couldn’t bear for one more person—much less the last person she had left—to die because of or for her. Like, yes, love was there, but so was survivor’s guilt. Zelda loving Link did not reduce her to a love interest. And, despite the fact that you’re told to go save her for the duration of the entire game, Zelda is not damseled. She is not a prisoner. Ganon is her prisoner and she’s waiting for Link to come pick up the slack. They are, inarguably, equals, and that is such a nice and refreshing change.
They still have so much to do, so much to catch up on. Zelda especially needs to get reacquainted with the world now that she can finally walk through it again. And, as we see in the Golden Ending, they have work that must be done and they are putting that on priority. However, they have time. They now have so much time to rekindle their friendship, grow closer, build a life together, and we’ve seen the foundation on which that can be built. This is by far the best rendition of the Link and Zelda relationship yet and I’m so glad it exists. A+++++, well done, Nintendo.

Being a big fan of the older Zelinks is hard because you go on Ao3 and it’s like, Zelink, Zelink, everywhere, and not a fic to read
