Everyone should watch the documentary about Antonia Bird... she is the Van Gogh of film making to me.... and I feel crazy carrying around this love for her when so few people are familiar with her or her work. She made Ravenous. She made Safe. She made Priest. She made Care. She made Face. She hated Hollywood and called them "the greatest cannibals of all." Her ideas were continuously squashed and mutilated by the BBC and other producers, but she kept on keeping on. Her combination of realism, humor, and political commentary was commonly misunderstood in her time, but I think the world is ready for it now. It's extremely difficult to find most of her films. Many never made it to DVD. Some never even made it to VHS. She had to fight uphill to make everything. She was friends and collaborators with Irvine Welsh, Robert Carlyle, Damon Albarn, and Danny Boyle. When things went badly for her, she was known to curl into the fetal position on set and suck her thumb. The world was unkind to her. I think she was a genius. I hate that she's dead now.
