Underneath the Bitumen the Artist - Mike Parr
"This work was conceived to memorialise the victims of twentieth century totalitarian violence in all of its ideological forms, including the shadow cast by the genocidal violence of nineteenth century British colonialism in Australia.
"The public will be able to witness the artist’s ‘disappearance’ under the road, but following the entombment, the road will be returned to familiar use.
"When the artist exits the container at the conclusion of the performance, concrete will be poured to fuse the chamber and its contents as a time capsule instated for future generations."

"Mr. Parr’s said his vanishing act was designed to tap into our deepest anxieties. Inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s painting 'Black Square,' the performance, Mr. Parr said, was about 'the null of the image.'"

This meme is so stupid I fucking love it.
I found it somewhere on the monument Mythos subreddit a few months to a year ago.
It’s way more funny than it has any right to be.
Idk why.
There needs to be a word for that.
Idk if there is one.
If there is, could somebody let me know.
Because it’s starting to drive me up the wall.
I mean it’s not like-*is suddenly and abruptly cut off*
*camera slowly zooms out accompanied by slowed-down 1950s music*

Mussolini Obelisk, built by Costantino Costantini in 1932 at the entrance of Foro Mussolini in Rome. Courtesy Christian Hincapié, 2018.
I was lucky enough to be in Rome this past summer. I had never been to Europe before. I’m not exactly sure what I expected to find or see in Rome. I knew that the city was essentially a hypercollage of time and material. While that is certainly true, what I found was a completely dystopian setting that has set off many questions for me regarding scale in relation to Western history. This old city is in many ways a carcass, the slowly collapsing Western world putting on display the ruins of its predecessor, the Roman Empire.

#OTD in 1893 – Birth of General Liam Lynch, Chief of Staff, IRA, in Limerick.
Liam Lynch was born in Barnagurraha, Co Limerick to Jeremiah and Mary Kelly Lynch. At 17 he was apprenticed to O’Neill’s hardware in Mitchelstown. Shortly after his apprenticeship began he joined the Gaelic League and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He joined the Irish Volunteers after witnessing the arrests of the Kent family by British forces after the failed Easter Rising of 1916. Two of the…

The Monuments Men (2014)
I’d been meaning to watch this ever since it came out in 2014. I’m a sucker for WW2 stories, and I like art, so I was curious to see a WW2 story about people dedicated to protecting art (with a basis in history). I wasn’t disappointed, but the movie was an odd experience.
There’s a quote attributed to François Truffaut, “There’s no such thing as an anti-war film.” The Monuments Men might be the…

If we can talk about ‘Black Excellence’ without also discussing Black okayness, there is something wrong – worsened by a culture of Black British historical remembrance that places ‘remember-worthiness’ only as far as our labour contributions. Whilst in cases this may be due to violent erasure in the archives, it may also reflect a state ideology that positions Black people human value dependent on labour.
And...
Black people are not Gods, and these monument games are unhelpful, with Black excellence “centred as the kid to impress” (Kinouani, 2021: 162).
There is no paywall, so please give it a read.

I still really hate the hobbit movies but at least they were aesthetically pleasing, and gave me Lee Pace's Thranduil, but people saying that rings of power makes the hobbit trilogy look better are off their rocker, it really doesn't and I hate them both for the same reasons. ❤️
