Sorry, did I just see someone on this webbed site of all places in 2023 say they’re pro-gentrification 🤡

The city I lived in as a kid used to be affordable, with a very diverse neighbourhood (mixture of South Asian Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, Israeli and Polish Jews, Black Jamaicans and then my white Christian family) who would all talk to each other. I was always getting invited over to parties and for food and I loved learning about everyone’s different cultures. If something suspicious was happening, we’d all know because we’d communicate and keep people safe. I think only 2 maybe 3 crimes happened in our neighbourhood the entire 10 years I was living there.

Now there’s more flats than fields, rent is around the benchmark of £1k a month not including bills when £400 a month bills included used to mean you were posh, almost everyone there is white and the crime rates have absolutely skyrocketed.

I imagine you can get a pretty good picture of the fight against gentrification in Boyle Heights if you walk the seven minutes from 356 Mission, the artist's studio/exhibition/performance space once run by Laura Owens and Wendy Yao, which was targeted by protests on both coasts before shutting down in 2018, to Luna Luna, the supposed $100 million artist playground immersive experience that Drake just opened in the 18-acre property being cobbled together by westside developers next to the IG-magnet 6th St Viaduct.

ngl a lot of people in urban planning and planning adjacent fields have fucking horrendous vibes. Like, they will very seriously give off the impression that they know what's best for communities without even spending more than a day waking maybe a few miles or driving around a bit. Planners revere Jane Jacobs but fundamentally fail to see how she would abhor them and the cookie-cutter projects they put together. People make communities, as people in planning we can give them blank pages for which they can write their stories but we should not be trying to write those stories ourselves. The fact schools and firms want you to "sell a story" is wild

If you have any experience analyzing media, you understand that the media that is produced mirrors what the current climate desires. So, it should come as no surprise that the 2010s saw an increase in woman-led franchises (like The Hunger Games). The 2000s were a very fucked time for women and, at some point, women began questioning their treatment and demanding better. So, we saw a lot of filmmakers attempt to create more well-rounded and complex women for their stories.

In the last year or two, though, we've taken a few steps backward. This is seen clearly in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Depp v. Heard case, the ban on drag shows and the implementation of anti-trans legislation in several states, etc. When you couple this with the 'Twilight was actually secretly good' discourse that's been happening these past couple of years, I'm actually not surprised that Hollywood wants to reboot the franchise.

I maintain that Twilight is the conservative audience's answer to queer vampires, and with all the push-back against the most marginalized groups of this country, it really shouldn't be a surprise that they are demanding the *safer* vampires gentrify the genre that doesn't belong to them once again, and what better time to do it than when queer audiences have just reclaimed it?
