Summoning primate/great ape Tumblr @bignosebaby @gorillawithautism
Can a gorilla’s coat be brown? Are there any distinctive color morphs recorded? I know of Snowflake, but that’s about it. I ask because some of the gorillas at the Gladys Porter Zoo are sort of a deep auburn color, at least in the pictures. I think it’s really pretty

Living Species, by the Numbers
Species of Mammals: ~5,500
Species of Birds: Between 10,000 and 20,000 (lots of disagreement)
Species of nonavian Reptiles: Between 10,000 and 20,000 (see above)
Species of Amphibians: more than 7,000
Species of "Fish": more than 33,000
Species of Echinoderms (star fish, sea urchins, etc.): ~7,500
Species of Arthropods: over 2,000,000 and growing (only 1,257,000 described but all researchers know that is a gross underestimate)
Species of Molluscs: > 100,000
Other Bilaterans (wormy things): ~85,000
Corals & Jellyfish: ~16,000
Sponges: ~11,000
Fungi: > 6,000,000
Plants: > 400,000 (plants species are weird)
"Protists": unknown, but more than 100,000 and is severely underestimated
"Bacteria": who the fuck knows. there are too many. Our bodies are half bacteria. possibly in the trillions.
This is what we mean by mammal bias: mammals are the smallest group on here, and yet, because we are mammals, they get the most research money, the most screen time, the most conservation funding, the most love, the most interest. That's ridiculous. That's patently nonsense. Mammals are not "more evolved" than anything on this list - we're all modern life and thus, equally evolved. The other groups of life deserve at least more attention, more care, more interest, even if we can never get it to be proportional. In fact, you can even see mammal bias in this list - because mammals are so well studied, that's the only species count that is NOT vague.
We rely on ALL of these creatures because we are part of a complex biosphere where all of these organisms work together to allow the flow of nutrients and energy through the system. We are all descendants of each biosphere that came before. Mammal bias - focusing only on things that we share the closest genetic ties to - is not only ignorant, its self defeating.
Kill the mammal bias in your head. Kill it now. Because its gross, its inaccurate, and mammals do not in fact rule the world. Bacteria do, and if we *must* give it to an animal, that animal would be Arthropods.
This has been a PSA. Please reblog to spread, because I'm tired of dealing with mammal bias in my own house.

Everything about this... I scream.
I think this is the first Indigenous vampire I've ever seen?!
Tumblr media
They made Olrox Indigenous and he's voiced by Zahn McClarnon, whom I adore:
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Bathory (voice by Franka Potente) is a vampire up in this bitch?! (but of course) The animation is top-tier... giving me all drama and delicious beautiful violence I need... And baby, Annette is voiced by Thuso Mbedu?! I am. shaking. NETFLIX PAY YOUR ANIMATORS, WRITERS, AND VOICE ACTORS!!!

What is the best toad species, and why is it Anaxyrus terrestris?
Okay Anaxyrus terrestris is definitely a Good Toad™, but I’m not sure if you’re aware of the diversity of toads; A. terrestris is up against some steep competition.
For instance, is A. terrestris blue with yellow spots like Rentapia hosii?
Tumblr media
src
No I thought not.
Is A. terrestris svelt, nimble, and covered in bright reticulated patterns like Atelopus hoogmoedi?
Tumblr media
src
No I thought not.
Is A. terrestris one of the largest frogs in the world and causing widespread ecological havoc in Australia like Rhinella marina?
Tumblr media
src
No I thought not.
Is A. anaxyrus a miniaturised toad with comically large hands and feet like Pelophryne albotaeniata?
Tumblr media
src
No I thought not.
Does A. terrestis climb trees and give birth to fully developed froglets like Nectophrynoides viviparus?
Tumblr media
src
No I thought not.
IN SUMMARY, Anaxyrus terrestris is good, but who can say it’s the best when there are so many incredible true toads out there??

cowboy au worldbuilding with the thoma
as you can see im taking some creative liberties with the giant emu by making them more diverse bc canon isnt enough for me and i have the brainworms
extra notes below the cut
standard thoma:
the original thoma and most common type available
perfect for travel, can pull wagons or carry light cargo
fast with good stamina, fastest over short distances
friendly, intelligent, energetic and quick to learn
the most diverse in terms of colors, patterns and extra traits
well rounded in all departments (theyre like the AQ horses of trigun)
draft thoma:
uncommon outside of major cities (kept by specialized breeders)
used for construction work and long haul heavy cargo transport
gentle, patient and eager to work
not built for speed but can walk for days at a steady pace without rest
dense feather coat protects them from the heat and sand
expensive to maintain and keep due to their size
theyre a relatively new type that came from selective breeding
"wild" thoma:
actually feral (aka. previously domesticated), not wild
originating from lost/runaways that have not been in contact with humans for generations
rare and elusive with a small population, sometimes spotted living near shipwrecks
people will pay top $$ for their capture
begin to exhibit adaptive mutations that help them survive the wastelands
smaller and less fluffy than their standard counterparts
dont come in many colors, mostly bays, chestnuts and blacks
hardy with incredible endurance
very stubborn, temperamental and intelligent, cant be forced to do something they dont want (like donkeys)
rarely ridden, mostly kept for crossbreeding
cattle-type thoma:
related to the standard thoma but NOT the same species
common pack animal in caravans, sometimes ridden as a cheaper alternative to the standard thoma
mainly bred for meat, hide and eggs
kept in huge open range herds that travel along worm swarms for feeding
sometimes kept as a form for anti-worm pest control
keratin crests are lightweight and used for protection and display
ranchers will paint patterns on their crests as a form of identification
not the sharpest tools in the shed, tend to bite and trample people

Wait I have something to contribute to in the mammal bias convo.
In the past I've referred to bugs as animals in conversation and people correct me and say, "it's an insect". YAH I KNOW, BUT I CHOSE ANIMAL BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE BETTER DESCRIPTION FOR THE CONVERSATION. BUGS ARE ANIMALS. I CAN CALL THEM ANIMALS. I can't think of an example rn as to why I'd call an bug an animal/refer to all insects as animals, but it's an interaction I've had a couple of times now.
But it like- why are people so resistant to calling bugs animals????
BUGS ARE ANIMALS!!!
Not only are they animals, but they make up MOST of the animals
Tumblr media
This comes from: University of Florida, Thomas Earth Center Institute -The Insect Effect: Insect Decline and the Future of Our Planet
And that's not including archanids, which I think is colloquially lumped in with bugs.
Also! I'll be talking about meat and I'll refer to fish or bird meat as just meat because I'm talking about meat in the broader sense of, "flesh that comes from an animal." Like colloquially, I know meat tends to be mammals but like- why do I need to preface it with "fish meat" or "bird meat" while "meat" inherently implies mammal??? MEAT IS MEAT!!!
Yup!
People really are thinking that the only animals that matter are mammals! Or, if they're a little more enlightened, vertebrates.
It's really, really, REALLY sad.
Most animals are insects!!! 9 out of 10!!!!
Nine of your ten fingers!!!
that one finger left encompasses EVERYTHING ELSE. Not just vertebrates, EVERYTHING.
How many animals are vertebrates?
Less than 7 out of every 200.
How many are mammals?
LESS THAN 7 OUT OF 2500.
MAMMALS. ARE. NOT. EVERYTHING.
