101 Things You Should Know About the UK Tory Government
Thing 26
Dominic Raab is the latest government minister to be accused of aggressive, bullying behaviour. A few days ago, Gavin Williams was forced to resign from Cabinet amid bullying claims after a civil servant was told, “slit your throat”.
Unelected Sunak was accused by Keir Starmer as “the boss who is so weak, so worried the bullies will turn on him, that he hides behind them.”
Who knows if Raab is a bully or not? At the moment the jury is out but as Raab is both Justice Minister AND Deputy Prime Minister it is very important this question is settled quickly and beyond any doubt.
BBC News (12/11/22) tells us that Raab has been reported as acting in a “rude” and “aggressive manner" towards staff, creating a “culture of fear" at the Ministry of Justice. The Telegraph (11/11/22) tells us that Raab has been “accused of hurling tomatoes across a table in a fit of rage as he was embroiled in a bullying storm.”
Raab has a troubled history. The Wikipedia entry for Raab states that in 2011 he brought a libel case against the The Mail on Sunday, after they
“…published an article alleging – falsely – that Raab, in his previous role as Chief of Staff to David Davis in 2007, had paid a female employee £20,000 in an out-of-court settlement as part of a confidentiality agreement to drop a claim of workplace bullying.”
Raab, despite being Justice Minister is no fan of the Human Rights Act. He claimed:
“The spread of rights has become contagious and, since the Human Rights Act, opened the door to vast new categories of claims, which can be judicially enforced against the government through the courts.”
Accountability is clearly not Raab’s strong suite. This was made frighteningly   clear when he publicly said of the state assassination of Jamai Khashoggi by Sudia Arabia that Britain would “not be throwing our hands in the air” in horror because they were our business partners.
Equally revealing about Raab's personality are observations made by Sasha Swire in her book “Diary of an MP's Wife." She said of Raab, you “get the impression he would slice your head off if you didn’t fall into line."
More amusing, but equally troubling, is this extract, recalling Raab’s over-reaction to a life-saving incident when her husband “H” and Raab were about to cross a busy London Road.
“They are just about to cross Pall Mall when a car shoots past and H protectively pulls him back. Dom in turn recoils and virtually floors H; his animal brain default is self defence, it’s that black belt karate he notched up in his youth. H thinks it's lucky Dom did actually remember who he was with or he would have been thrown to the ground...
“I’m bloody not doing that again! His reaction was a bit OTT, if you ask me,” H tells me later."
Do we really want a Justice Minister who is ruled by his “animal brain”? I think not.

okay. listen. if you ever find yourself falling into a new ideological circle, pay attention. if you notice that you’re among people who define themselves as part of an “in-group” with a pre-prepared human “enemy” to constantly rail against—if everyone fantasizes about the mental state of these loathsome monsters, if they participate in witch hunts or (perhaps worse) poke bears and court harassment on purpose to comfort each other over—get the fuck out. you haven’t been enlightened to some grand conspiracy, there are no evil “enemies” or “degenerates” trying to rip apart the fabric of society, and you do not have the moral duty to “enlighten” anyone to whatever you think the “truth” is. it’s neither safe nor normal to spend hours of your day fighting with strangers on the internet
a lot of people wear this shit like a badge of honor, but it’s also not normal to hide your “in-group” status as a form of martyrdom, relishing when the “enemy” slips up around you. it’s comforting in the moment, but in the long run, you’re alienating yourself from the world outside of your bubble. the more you alienate yourself, the more vulnerable and lonely you become, and the harder it is to reject the comfort of belonging to the “in-group”
i’m writing this from the perspective of someone who grew up in a cesspool of awful, cult-like rural churches—which is its own situation—but i see similar shit happening in online communities all the time, both within and 800 miles outside of my own ideological principles. yes, every toxicass radfem i block seems to be trapped in a version of this vicious cycle, but i also see it happening in random queer circles and niche fandom communities. no one is immune, not even me. i’ve watched people fall into this shit and never make it out. be careful

Learning to internalize the message above, but art is in all of our bones. If you feel afraid to create art because it won't be "good enough," it's worth it to explore why you feel that fear. Creating art is one of the basic impulses of people, and if you want to create art, then you absolutely must.

Do y’all know about Frédéric Thomas? He is a French parasitologist who heard a story about crickets in New Zealand leaping into the water even though they can’t swim, and immediately speculated this suicidal behavior was related to behavior manipulation from an internal parasite. This is before neuro-parasitology was a field at all, and before people really put much stock into parasite’s ability to control animal behavior.
Thomas was certain that studying these crickets would be a huge priority for the scientific world given the implications of a parasite controlling an animal’s actions in such an insidious way. Unfortunately, absolutely nobody would fund Thomas’ expedition to study the crickets, and his grants were all declined. In a wild move that showcases the balls to the wall, near- insanity level passion of a biologist, Thomas declared a hunger strike and wrote a letter to the president of France saying he would not eat until someone took the matter seriously and funded his study on the suicidal crickets. I feel like those of us in research can at least a little bit understand this impulse.
Well the French government actually got Thomas’ message and freaked out a bit at the negative publicity that could arise from a crazy worm scientist starving to death. So they send some government bigwigs to the university to pressure Thomas and his department heads into calling an end to the hunger strike. In the flurry of attention that resulted from this, a Swiss billionaire heard about Thomas’ plight and offered to partially fund the study. The French government was happy to get rid of Thomas and contributed funding as well so that Thomas could head to New Zealand to study his suicidal crickets. He was right about the parasites causing the behavior!
The hunger strike debacle is not even the wildest part of this story. I love biology so much
