[David] Selznick was particularly agitated by the script's anti-American bias, and by its hints of homosexuality. To the casual reader of Greene's final script or the novella upon which it was based, the idea that there are gay undertones will seem absurd. Yet Selznick detected them nonetheless, especially in respect of the two central male characters, called in the final film Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) and Harry Lime (Orson Welles). Before shooting began in October 1948, Selznick sent a memo stating his objections:
what on earth motivates Martins in his curious and passionate interest in clearing up the reputation of a dead man who he hasn't seen for ten years. ... The only conclusion I can draw from it is that they slept together, and I don't mean slept, all the way through Eton.
(In the film both Martins and Lime are Americans, but in Greene's novella they are English, though Martins is half-American.)
In an interview at the National Film Theatre in 1984, Greene remembered how vehement Selznick was on this point:
he went on to say, 'And what's all this buggery, boys? What's all this buggery?' I said, 'Buggery?' He said, 'Look. Chap goes out to find his friend. Doesn't find him. He's apparently dead. Why doesn't he go home?

i remember once seeing an ad for scar reducing creams and ended up deciding no that's not reasonable to buy if it's literally self inflicted. but because of this now being in a visible place (can probably hide until summer, but after it's too warm to wear long sleeves... oh gosh. :< ) I feel like I probably should do research on how to minimise scarring at least for visible cuts for the sake of others.
and maybe invest in a nice light summer cardigan :) you know those pretty lacy ones, I bet I could pull that off, and I've wanted one for ages so this might be my motivation :)
....I should also do research on how to hide them before they've healed, because I've got a simulation next Tuesday. If necessary I talk to the person running the sim and get permission to be in long sleeves for that

my pitch for the greta gerwig two narnia project is do magician's nephew and then lion the witch and the wardrobe. hype up magician's nephew as a prequel or whatever, get ppl to watch it with the promise it'll recontextualize the Famous One you're doing next, and then you can do cool things with parallels and allusions between the two of them that rarely get highlighted bc they're so far apart in the writing chronology! then you get the big ticket property AND a new-to-adaptation story that's an absolute banger, and of magician's nephew/horse and his boy/last battle, magician's nephew is def the unadapted book with the best shot of a Good Adaptation
