Who did you vote for to be chief, or did it seem kinda silly to you?
Tumblr media
“Actually, at first they tried to vote for me, but I don’t really do well in ‘leader roles’, so I said ‘no’. Then Ralph and Merridew tried to go- I wanted to vote for Peter-…or as most call him ‘Piggy’, but they didn’t let me…so I chose Ralph, one: because he was literally CLINGING to me begging me to and two: the blondes have to stick together, right?”
“…I really don’t think that we need a chief, but whatever makes these littluns happy, I guess…Oh, and yes, biguns are littluns too. They’re much younger than the sins and I, so therefore, they’re the little guys. Even though Merridew is almost to my shoulders, we AREN’T talking about that. I’m not short, that kid is just the tallest one. Oh dear…Don’t get me started on Gluttony…”
“…Also I hate that stupid conch shell. It’s loud. And- Oh! I’m sorry— I rambled too much and started going off again, didn’t I?”

My "hot take" on Piggy and his role in LOTF (more like a rant)
These are all my opinions and interpretations of the book. Feel free to discuss in the comments :-)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) The Metaphor around his character
I personally view Piggy as a metaphor for logical thinkers and intelligence in society . He's the smart and logical one out of the group, well, as smart and logical a preteen boy can be, but he's significantly smarter than the rest. He knows things. Piggy gave Ralph most of the important ideas used throughout the book (Conch; social rule, assemblies; order/community, etc), even if it was in a smart-ass way. He helped Ralph and the others with more analytical and aware tasks in earlier chapters (Keeping track of the Littluns, names, organizing tasks, etc). His ideas and proposals are logical. (I'll come back to this)
2) What's with all the teasing?
Surface-level, he's an overweight kid with asthma and wears glasses. Very easy to tease, especially being the only one physically different in a group of young boys (coming from experience). Metaphorically speaking, I truly believe that Piggy and his constant, public humiliation from (mainly) Jack, who represents the "evil in society" and pure instinct (Ralph POV), reflects on how as a society, people tend to shut down and ignore new, intelligent thoughts and ideas. Now, society and people are constantly evolving, yes, but people hate change and feeling questioned as to what they already belive as true. So, as Piggy is bringing these good and new ideas to the group, he gets teased and shut up because what do his ideas cause? Change and questions.
3) His name
Now, I can't be the only one who is a smidge upset we never get to know Piggy's real name. However, although it would be nice, I do belive Piggy's name has a very...poetic? meaning to it and is significant to the book. Now, he was reluctant at first to tell Ralph, but ended up telling him that kids used to call him Piggy. This makes Ralph laugh and tease (if I remember correctly). This is what he was used to. Now, all he wanted was for Ralph to NOT tell the group that he was called Piggy before the crash. It's an understandable request and not that hard to fulfill. However, what's one of the first things Ralph does? He calls him Piggy AS he's being teased. This makes the humiliation worse for Piggy and the little trust he put in someone on the island was broken.
Now, every Bigun on the island has a real name, an identity, except Piggy. He is the only one without a sliver of his identity before the island. He will forever be remembered by the boys as Piggy. Piggy, a nickname used to taunt and brutalize his self worth and identity.
"Well why didn't he correct the other boys?". As someone who went through bullying because of their physical appearance, these names really take up every ounce of your self-worth and your identity with yourself. Piggy knew himself as the names he was called. What's the point in getting your name out there if it's going to be stomped on and ignored? It would just be another jab at himself, wouldn't it?
4) His death and everything to go along with it
Piggy is the last character to die in LOTF, and his death has immense symbolism and meaning to it. Now, he recommends that Ralph's small tribe of (4) go and get his glasses back. Not a very possible request, if you look at it statistically, but hey! Piggy does the thinking and Ralph does the leading, right?
Fast forward and Ralph is trying to be reasonable. He comes in peace, essentially saying "What the fuck? You could have just asked." Now, who's coaching this speech, reminding of the main reasong they came? Piggy. Of course, things don't go Ralph or Piggy's way and Jalph is having their fight. Samneric (symbolism for battle between moral and evil) are tied up and ignored. Roger is throwing rocks, still not daring to disrupt the taboo that he crated for himself. Everything comes down to Piggy. And what does Piggy do best? State what's on his mind. His intelligence.
"I tell you, I've got the conch! Surprisingly, there was silence now; the tribe were curious to hear what amusing thing he might have to say" (Golding 180).
The tribe is ready to laugh at Piggy's reason. This part of the book is where the conch comes into a big play. It represents social order and reason. It's so well protected throughout the book and having it out in order to reason with "savages" is a ginormous risk. But hey, intelligence has control over the social setting currently, and what's the best way to combat against savages?
(This is getting long so I'm going to sum this up. If you're curious, read pages 180-181 with this idea in mind).
-------------
"High over head, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all of his weight on the lever" (Golding 180).
Roger, the character we spent learning as someone who is sadistic but doesn't dare interrupt that once sense of normalcy around Samneric and Ralph as he throws rocks at them, dropped a big ass rock on Piggy's head, reaching his final turning point.
The conch, all social order and structure, is smashed into thousands of peices, never to return again.
Piggy, intelligence, rational thinking and logic, has his skull cracked in half, and dies how he lived. A social mockery. Someone who's only identity is a sick nickname, taunting him for as long as his story his told.
The island has reached a point of no return.
Society and order in the group, gone and washed out into sea, alongside the peace that once was.
LOTF HEADCANONS >:)
This is going to be a list of my on-island/book time period headcanons (HINT NOT CANON). The majority are my own, and some are my "adopted" headcanons. Each section will be headed! Pre/post island headcanons will be done later since this is super long already
I'm sorry for any grammatical errors or inconsistencies
TWS: Mentions of character death, religious stuff, Implied child death
This is LOTF content, so expect it to be a little dark! Take care of yourself <3
Tumblr media
Island/Time Period
- Took place in the late 40s/early 50s. Not during/post WW2 but instead during a new fictitious war caused by nuclear threats in Europe. This is why the boys were sent away from their boarding school in the UK (I'll elaborate on this in a bit).
-The island itself was decent sized with 3 beaches: The meetings/crash took place on the largest beach of the island, which faced West.
-The center of the island was dense woods and heavy foliage. Pig runs ran throughout the entire center and led out to the eastern side of the island.
-Castle Rock and Fire Mountain were to the north, meaning shelters/bathing pools were on the southwest side of the island. Shelters were originally going to be built closer to the mountain.
-After the first fire, the northern side of the island lost the majority of the trees around the mountain. This is one of the reasons the shelters were shifted to the West.
-The island had amazing sunsets, so Ralph would try to have their non-emergency meetings around this time to have as many of the kids witness them as possible. Usually worked.
-Castle Rock was lower down in elevation than Fire Mountain, but it had a very good view of the whole island. It had a ledge above a part of the Eastern beach (where the pigs often lay. This is where Piggy dies. The feast took place in the westeast).
-The boys were on the island for 5 1/2 months.
The Biguns
Choir boys will be highlighted blue
Ages (oldest to youngest): Jack (13), Maurice (13), Roger (13), Ralph (13), Simon (12), Robert (12), Piggy (12), Eric (11), Sam (11), Bill (11)
[sorry if I forgot anyone, these are just the ones I have ages for. Choir has roughly 6 more members in my hcs. ]
-Took the choir a week or so to remember everyone else's names (-Piggy).
-Didn't really mind if someone stayed behind during hunts earlier on, but as time progressed, Jack and Roger would get more and more annoyed. Ralph, Simon and Piggy never joined but helped prepare the pig once or twice before roasting it.
- The majority of them, even Jack and Ralph, would have nightmares later on (think around the time Samneric found the parachutist) and it would put everyone on even more of an edge.
-Arguments would break out within the Choir boys frequently (mainly Roger and Maurice), and Simon or Ralph would have to mediate them. It became the norm until Jack overtook as chief.
-Roger was really the only biggun that wanted to join Jack in the end, even though Ralph kinda sucked. None of them really liked Jack OR Ralph (- Simon, Piggy and Samneric).
-Roger got the most into the final hunt, commanding everyone and instructing them how to hunt Ralph alongside Jack. They scared the littluns that were a part of the tribe and the younger biguns. Everyone enjoyed it in the moment, don't get me wrong, but like. Once that Naval officer showed up, they were INSTANTLY feeling guilty and horrible. (-Jack and Roger. They took time)
Individual Biguns
Jack:
- Kept his choir uniform throughout the duration on the island. Reminded him of when life was less complicated.
- Would still rehearse with the choir for the first month or so before everyone got too involved in the island to care. Jack would still sing whilst doing busy work, fire duty, or meetings to bring comfort to himself.
-Never hated Ralph. He felt very conflicted when interacting with him and was jealous of his authoritative role. He ultimately didn't want Ralph to abandon/hate him, and when this happened, Jack felt extremely betrayed. Even when hunting him at the end, Jack never felt hatred but rather power hungry.
- He and Ralph were friends for 3 or so months and would hang out often. They confided in each other and were actually really close.
- Suffered with anxiety episodes on the island.
- His hair grew so long to the point Simon showed him how to tie it into a bun with plants. He kept it like that for the rest of his time on the island.
- Watched the sunset with Simon, and they would hang out and rely on each other during the night. Jack didn't want to be seen with him during the day, but he would always pick him for hikes and stuff if he needed to bring someone else along.
- Speaking of Simon, Jack didn't realise it was him during the dance until it was too late to do anything. He grieved with the other choir boys and remained to feel guilty for a while. Jack (and sometimes the others) would go out to the beach where he died and make flower crowns, plant boats, stuff like that, and would send them into the ocean as a way to remember and say thank you to Simon.
- He and Roger are besties, and it's very cheesy
- Bathed a little more regularly than the others but not as often than he should have
- Rarely got sleep on the island and when he did it wasn't good sleep. Ran on adrenaline most days
- Loved being able to put on the clay mask because it covered his "ugliness"
- Lost a significant amount of his hearing during the plane crash/war and had a hard time navigating that on the island. Never really mentioned it to anyone until months after being rescued (this is partly @mccall-me-maurice 's headcanon and I love it so much)
Maurice:
- Gremlin, always caused problems and blamed it on Roger (I hc them as cousins)
- Smiled so frequently to the point it freaked Ralph out. The choir boys are used to it.
- Smiled as a way to mask since he hated talking about his feelings and felt if he smiled no one would ask if he was okay (mecore)
- Not very helpful but did what he was told....sometimes
- Didn't get along with the littluns (stupid sandcastles) and would tease them/stick his tongue out at them.
- Hyped up Jack's ideas but also listened to Ralph when he was chief
- Extroverted
- Didn't really put on a mask when hunting since it inched his face but he would paint his body to blend in better.
- Stinky boi
- Friends with the biguns and felt a little disappointed Ralph didn't want to join Jack's tribe
Roger:
- Quiet (unless he's being snarky) when in large groups but would become extroverted around Jack/Maurice
- Got bored so often he just caused chaos
- Had a hard time communicating his genuine thoughts into words so Jack would help him talk to the other boys.
- Sarcastic and kind of a smart-ass, especially to Ralph and Piggy
- Always mixed up the twins and started just pointing and calling one of them "you"
- Middle-child syndrome.
-Felt he did everyone a favor when he dropped the Boulder on Piggy.
- Friends with Simon, but they really only interacted pre-island (Kinda like with Jack, didn't want to be seen with him becuase he thought it would make him "batty")
-Perfered to do things in solitude or duos
- Had a very dark way of thinking about things and people. He still longed for authority and normalcy but thought of people as evil, and only a select few were "good." It's very contradicting, and Roger has a hard time navigating his thoughts.
- Always had intricate paintings whenever the group would redo their masks.
Ralph:
- Saw the beach and was all like "So much room to do cartwheels"
- Would watch the sunrises with Simon
- Got really bad migraines often and would have to be out of commission for a few days. Jack would take over and make a small army
- Always thinking about how life was before, what his family/friends were up to, etc...
- Didn't actually want to be chief and hated it for a while but grew to enjoy the authority that came with it
- Stole all of Piggy's ideas and would act like they were his own
- Would help the littluns but never enjoyed it
- Slept like an egg 🥚 (curled up in a ball almost)
- Would go on walks frequently to try and clear his head. Overthought everything, often stressing himself out over it and needing to then take another mental break
- Loved loved loved watching fire burn, even in the end
- Friendly towards everyone (on occasions) but only considered Piggy and Simon to be his friends (+ Jack for a few months)
- Felt really hurt that Jack turned on him. Ralph hated him for a bit but got over it eventually (like waaaaay post island)
Simon:
- Loved catching critters/bugs and showing them to Ralph. He would tell him their species, what they ate, etc
- Nocturnal. Literally was up almost all night just roaming the forest, doing fire duty, helping littluns, stuff like that
- Helped paint intricate designs on the choir boys the first time they proposed the idea to him because he wanted to paint something.
- Would make patterns in the sand, let the sea wash them away, and repeat the process
- Very calm and quiet. Didn't hate anyone
- Had a crush on Ralph but tried very hard to hide it. (Worked pretty well!)
- Loved the littluns with every bone in his body because they reminded him of his younger siblings. Did everything in his power to make sure they were comfortable.
- Despite being "friends" with Jack, Simon never agreed with his morals/ideas and found Ralph's more sensible. However, he didn't like either in an authoritarian role and thought they all should have been in charge and involved in making decisions.
- Knew he was going to die that night but wanted to warn the others/see them one last time
- Poetic. He would tell poems to anyone who would listen
- Calmed down fights, anxiety attacks, etc....
- Epileptic and hypoglycemic (constantly growing faint, so he tried to stay out of the sun as much as possible and take breaks when needed)
- Thought that the Lord of the Flies was God punishing him for his sins (he literally had none)
- Prayed often to bring comfort to himself
(I have literally no headcanons for Robert ;-;)
Piggy:
- Actually 🤓☝️ (I'm joking I swear)
- Got his feelings hurt easily but tried to hide it when he was sad
- Always thought of what he was going to bake with his Auntie when he got home
- Constantly came up with actually good ideas but never got to share them since Ralph kinda blew them off
- Had a few asthma attacks on the island (like 2 + the Canon one) and Simon and Bill would help him out
- Got very overwhelmed by the littluns but tried to keep them accounted for and safe
- Did the analytical jobs on the island and was helpful with counting supplies
- Enjoyed watching fish swim in the streams/ocean
- Constantly feared for his safety when Jack/Roger were near
- Didn't want to share his name in fear of being even more humiliated and ultimately forgot who he was other than "Piggy"
- Knew he wasn't coming back from Caslte Rock
- Bad at emotionally heavy situations
Eric:
- Enjoyed hunting even though he wasn't very good at it
- Always did the rough/physical jobs when possible since he hated feeling weak at home
- Corrected the others when they called him Sam
- Loves his brother but got annoyed with him frequently
- Didn't swim more often than needed because he was scared of sharks
- Wanted to protect Sam so he stayed close at all times
- Had probably the most fun out of everyone on the island because he had Sam with him
- Always eager to try new things/help out
- Seemed to get comfy quicker than everyone else
- Favored Jack and his tribe in the beginning but quickly changed up when Jack started going coo coo
- Had an attitude
Sam:
- Hated hunted. It grossed him out. He went anyway to stay near Sam
- Perfered to swim on the beach and hang with the littluns rather than helping Ralph with labor
- Loved the ocean
- Got annoyed with how protective Sam was of him since it made him feel small
- Enjoyed Castle Rock and the view that came with it
- Favored Ralph from the beginning and would do *somethings* that he told Sam to do. Was quick to suggest to Eric that they helped Ralph when possible
- Bird watched with Piggy and Simon
- Just overall a sweetheart to everyone
Bill:
- The only headcanon I have for Bill is that he was essentially the nurse of the island, and everyone would go to him for help. He learned all this stuff from his mom, who was a war nurse and just was super super helpful with keeping everyone from getting too badly hurt (this is also another adopted headcanon!)
Littluns
- Tried to start their own tribe and overthrow the older kids (didn't work)
- Has opinions about things and felt ignored most of the time
- Like 80% didn't make it off the island....
- Really just chilled in the sun all day
- Had fun throwing spears at Ralph in the end
- Really just did what they saw Jack do
- HATED RALPH
IM FINALLY DONE!! THIS TOOK A WEEK 😭
Really want to make and draw a lotf modern au but I’m struggling with ideas for some characters 😭
Like Biguns would be in yr 10-11 and littluns would be yr 7. Ralph and Piggy run a STEAM club and the other biguns help out, they could possibly run a band but I’m thinking more about that idea rn
There will also be jalph! But a cute version ofc (they’re still minors after all)
Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated ❤️
Welcome to Maurice Memes!
It's been 3 years, and I haven't made an intro post yet💀 Maybe it's time... this post is subject to change btw!
Who Am I?
For those who are already familiar with me, I'm most well-known in this fandom as Maurice Memes! But you can also call me who I actually am, AtomicStarCat (<-main blog link) (or Atomic)! I can go by anything you want me to, even Maurice's Funky Purple Socks!
I use any pronouns you want to use with me! Call me anything you'd like!
I'm currently 18 years old, but sometimes I still feel like I'm 12 *cry*
I am ace-aro, but I really love making friends!
I'm really bad at reaching out to others in this fandom and being consistent with liking posts, but I really love everyone here, and I'd love to know you better! If I'm not following your LotF blog, please let me know!! I'd love to see more content! I don't talk much, but I promise that if you reach out to me and talk to me, that would make me so happy!! I really want to become closer to everyone here! I'll do my best to appreciate you all better!
I'm kinda off and on in every fandom I'm in, so I'll post consistently for a while, then disappear for a while, but I'm never gone forever! This fandom means so much to me, I'd never forget it!
What Do I Like?
Lord of the Flies! Why else would I be here?
mostly children's media, like Digimon, Powerpuff Girls Z, Precure, and Legend of Zelda! But I won't post about that here^^
About My Art and Requests!
I'm an artist! I draw mostly on Notability, but I sometimes make finished pieces on Ibis or make sketches on Freeform!
I mostly sketch silly things and mini-comics, but I have done some character memes in the past and may do some in the future.
Requests: I will most likely take any and all LotF character/LotF ship requests! I can also draw your designs for the boys if you ask me! I'd love to see them!
I also look at trades for LotF characters, LotF ships, and OCs, just ask! (I always consider OC trades, but won't always accept)
I also have a dead Percival ask blog, @percivals-mailbox, but you can still send stuff in if you really want to!
About my LotF!
My active ships: Jack/Ralph, Roger/Simon, Maurice/Sam, Platonic Maurice+Piggy, Bill/Robert, Percival/Mulberry Boy, and Johnny/Wilfred!
I don't particularly dislike any ships as long as they're portrayed respectfully and healthily! Just don't ask me to draw something weird like a bigun/littlun ship😅
I headcanon Ralph and Mulberry Boy as brothers, and I post about them sometimes without context haha
I have one(1) AU called LotF Academy that's slice of life, which also includes gender bends of all the characters as separate entities in the same world! You can ask me to draw them together!
I don't post very often explicitly about my headcanons, but I will talk about them if asked!
Conclusion!
I only have a couple rules!
Respect me, yourself, and others on my page.
I don't support discrimination of any kind, incest, proship, basic DNI, etc., or endorse anything 18+ on my profile. I say endorse because I don't have problems with healthy 18+ content, just that it makes me uncomfortable as a sex-repulsed ace.
Do not use my fan art on any of my social media without clear, linked credit, and do not use any original art on my social media without explicit permission under any circumstances!
====
Find me elsewhere! OC requests are always open on toyhou.se! I’m also on Art Fight!
atomicstarcat.carrd.co
Thank you for reading my long intro! I'm so happy you found your way here, and I hope you will continue to visit for years to come! I can't wait to meet you!
Sorry about that, anyways…Thoughts on Simon? ^_^
I like the guy a lot he’s neat
"well... anyway! simon's bearable, i guess, and he's better than all of you."
"also, he's always getting leaves in his hair for some reason. i don't know where he's been, but i made him a crown so we could match."
"i mean-- i don't care if he wears it. if anything he's the one who should feel honored to match with me."
"but anyway, he's always throwing a faint. i've only known the guy a couple weeks and he passes out all the time."
"(next time he does, i'll catch him for sure.. that'd definitely be cool.)"
"he's pretty quiet even when he's conscious. not like roger silent, but quiet. but he's very nice, you see. and he's always getting fruit for the littluns. me, i wouldn't bother. and i don't even think he's a bigun. how old is the kid? 10? i'm way taller than him." (he's like 2 inches taller than him.)
"i think he'd be pretty nice looking if he got a haircut or something. not like he could compare to me or anything, just, you know."
I have had the hc that Maurice, Roger and Simon were the youngests of the choirboys. There is a part in the book that it is said that actually Simon, Maurice and Robert are in that zone between littluns and biguns, but little ahead we have that sandcastle scene and I think I assumed it was Roger and not Robert the young one. So that is it.
In my head Roger was little older than Simon and even if I know he is older for me he is still that 10 almost 11 year old boy, not more. BUT HE IS SMALL! That type of strong but short body structure. It helps me with the image of a quiet, antisocial kid that nobody notice until the moment you see him and it is hard to ignore.
Simon is small too, but it is more due to the young age (9 and few months) and suffer from social anxiety mainly because believing that he is not good enough (I have a very personal hc for my Simon that one day maybe I'll try to developt more here because I really like it). The other boys purposely ignores him.
And Maurice who is in between the two in age but is a tall, slim and very extroverted boy that easily get along with the other of more age.
I went through all that only to justify why I think Simon and Roger would be friends during their choir times. Everybody things Simon is batty and ignores him, and for Roger they think he is weird and prefer do not get envolved with him. One day they look at each other and it totally was like:
Simon: "I can fix him"
Roger: "I can make him worse"
addressing a crowd with "ladies and gentlemen," is so dated and gendered we should instead start using "biguns and littluns,"
Hear me out, lots daycare au with all the littluns.
But it's just at Ryder's house.
Ryder is Mary but he’s the same age as the original just with a shit load of littluns invading his space at all times
This probably happens in the original actually
But the kids (littlun and bigun) show up at different times, Maurice, Ralph, and Jack being the ones that visit him the most.
No wait imagine if after the island, Mary’s daycare gets all the littluns from the island and Ryder’s standing there like “🧍🏼Are you fucking kidding me-“
WAIT HOLD UP @lord-of-the-bundle-of-sticks KLAUS AND HENRY MEETUP WHO WOULD BEAT THE OTHER UP FIRST (probably Klaus, Henry just kicks sand)
Rambling post! I’ve had uh…MANY….Of the littluns (and Simon) ask about my…uh….what do you call them? Pairings! Yeah! Those! So I’ll be talking about them!
Ralph and Jack: They’re sort of…annoying. I find them a little goofy though! Their silly banter is entertaining.
Jack and Roger: I don’t think Roger’s a very good influence…He’s been allowing Jack to have violent thoughts about hurting the pigs on the island and I just don’t like that…Jack’s been obsessed with hunting.
Ralph and Simon: Simon actually asked me about what I think about him and Ralph! Don’t tell him, but…I believe Ralph thinks he’s annoying. He’s overly clingy towards Ralph. He’s desperate for Golden Boy’s attention and uh…well…I think they’d be good friends if Ralph would be nicer!
Roger and Simon: I think they’d be good friends! Maybe Simon can calm Roger’s…violent tendencies. And maybe Roger can make Simon more uh…assertive! He needs it. They’re both really quiet and I think they’d bond over that factor.
Maurice and Sam:…..Not sure!…Maurice is secretly a nice person, I can feel it. He just tries to goof around and gets shouted at for it. Sam and Eric are both very silly. I think Sam is a good friend for Maurice! They can be silly and goofy together!
Hmm….Not sure about anybody else. I don’t think the boys like each other all that much. They sure look up to me though! They don’t pay much attention to the sins though.
….Maybe I can give a little insight on my thoughts on them, too!
Sloth: I met him first and I think he’s very nice! Even though he’s kinda a liability because he falls asleep on me. I could be walking in the forest with him, and he would fall asleep in front of me and trip me. It’s quite annoying at times. But he’s a good friend!
Lust: He’s…ahem. Well! Very pretty looking! I will say that! I thought he was a girl at first. I think he secretly has some sort of inner turmoil going on about that. He’s very nice to me, maybe even a little too much. I’m getting very annoyed when he decides to basically hog the lagoon all day. It’s not like I can’t bathe in front of someone, it’s just I DON’T want to. Not around him. I get…Uncomfortable.
Wrath: I…I’m scared of him sometimes. He tries to hype up Jack whenever they go hunting and that annoys the hell out of me. I don’t think he’s a very…good person. He’s better than some of them, I suppose. Maybe I need to talk to him some more…
Gluttony: He’s actually pretty nice! He eats the unripe berries for me and Sloth to eat the more ripe ones. He’s very sweet and considerate! Although he complains about being hungry a lot. I think he’s joking about it though, y’know, because all we have are fish, pigs and berries to eat. Not much of a choice, huh?
Envy: Quite an odd guy…He kinda just looks around and listens. He reminds me of Simon, but if he tried harder to speak up. Nobody but me and some of the biguns listen to his suggestions on what to do with the island, though. I feel a little bad for him.
Pride: Very egotistical. He tries too hard to impress. I don’t really like him. I think he either gets too much attention at home or too little…I can’t tell.
Greed: As his nickname or…Well…Maybe it’s his real name? I’m not sure. They all told me these “sin” names and acted like it was their real names….Anyways, he’s very greedy for attention and affection from people. He’s overwhelming…I think he’s trying to hurt everyone on this island with his…toxicity. I hate him. I don’t hate easily. Dislike? Sure. But hate? Never. Unless you’re like the scum of the Earth. I truly believe that he is. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I’m pretty sure he’s hurting Envy somehow. I’m not sure, it’s just a…personal belief.
Entry #4
So there’s a beast…
Yknow, there have been talks of a beast by littluns since the beginning. Most of us just dismiss it as imagination and bad dreams and go on with our lives. But way too early this morning, Samneric woke me up from my sleep to tell me there’s a beast on the mountain, that they saw it while on fire duty. They were very frantic, and I was half asleep, so it took me a minute to catch on, but I understood after a while. I told them to calm down about it and to go call a group assembly. Once we were all gathered and knew of this supposed beast, of course Jack must butt in. He says that the beast isn’t real and to make sure it’s not we can go on a hunt for It. I agree with the notion that it’s not real, but I don’t think there’s any need for a hunt if we know the beast is a false creature. The talk of a beast has unsettled the littluns and now we have to go on a wild goose chase to find a beast that doesn’t even exist. Piggy got left with the littluns while me and the rest of the biguns go on with hunting. I’m irritated by this whole ordeal even if Samneric claim to have seen something. I really don’t know how much I believe them because it was awfully early, and they said they had just woken up, I feel they were probably seeing things. But now, I’m on a relentless hunt for no reason and dealing with Jack’s immaturity. All I care about is getting back up to the mountain to restart the fire. All the fanfare about it is making me nervous though, like maybe there is something out there.
Good morning redheads who can sing C sharp, twins whose names are shoved together, hunters who stayed loyal to the original chief the longest, protagonists who get called “Golden boy” in every fic ever, kids with mulberry birthmarks, kids who recite their full names, kids who fainted at matins over the precentor, kids who are fine with being called anything but Piggy, kids with emo bangs who crush people with rocks, kids who get tortured by kids who used to stick to kicking over sandcastles, kids who believe in the beast, kids who had to pretend to be a pig, kids who became memelords in the fandom, and all the choir boys who became hunters, littluns and biguns who got stuck on an island and are holding the conch
Canon Maurice
I decided to look into Canon Maurice a little more and see how close he really is to Fanon Maurice. Here is a list of notable quotes involving him (sorry the page number are inaccurate, I was using an online pdf):
Physical appearance:
“There was Maurice, next in size among the choir boys to Jack, but broad and grinning all the time” (27).
“The decrease in size, from Ralph down, was gradual; and though there was a dubious region inhabited by Simon and Robert and Maurice, nevertheless no one had any difficulty in recognizing biguns at one end and littluns at the other” (82).
So Maurice was tall, but he was also smol..?
Maurice being smart:
“‘Put on green branches,’ said Maurice. ‘That’s the best way to make smoke’” (58).
“Later perhaps, practised debaters—Jack, Maurice, Piggy—would use their whole art to twist the meeting: but now at the beginning the subject of the debate must be laid out clearly” (111).
“I don’t believe in the beast of course. As Piggy says, life’s scientific, but we don’t know, do we? Not certainly, I mean—” (125).
“‘We ought to have a drum,’ said Maurice, ‘then we could do it properly.’ Ralph looked at him. ‘How properly?’ ‘I dunno. You want a fire, I think, and a drum, and you keep time to the drum’” (165).
“‘Shouldn’t we go back to Piggy,’ said Maurice, ‘before dark?’” (166).
“Maurice spoke, hesitating, not wanting to seem a funk. ‘Supposing the beast’s up there?’” (166).
“Maurice put up his hand. ‘But what happens if we meet—’ The chief waved his objection aside. ‘We’ll keep along by the sands. Then if he comes we’ll do our, our dance again.’ ‘Only the three of us?’” (232).
Maurice being helpful:
“The twins, Sam ’n Eric, were the first to get a likely log but they could do nothing till Ralph, Jack, Simon, Roger and Maurice found room for a hand-hold” (53).
“Simon ran after [Ralph], then Maurice [...] Behind the four boys, the smoke moved gently along the horizon [...] Just where the steep ascent of the mountain began, [Ralph] stopped. Maurice was only a few yards behind him” (94).
“Jack spoke in a whisper. ‘Pick up the pig.’ Maurice and Robert skewered the carcass, lifted the dead weight, and stood ready. In the silence, and standing over the dry blood, they looked suddenly furtive” (196-197).
“Jack was waiting for something. He whispered urgently to the others. ‘Go on—now!’ The two savages murmured. Jack spoke sharply. ‘Go on!’ The two savages looked at each other, raised their spears together and spoke in time. ‘The Chief has spoken.’ Then the three of them turned and trotted away. [...] ‘That was Jack and Maurice and Robert,’ said Ralph. ‘Aren’t they having fun?’” (201-203).
“‘We shall take fire from the others. Listen. Tomorrow we’ll hunt and get meat. Tonight I’ll go along with two hunters—who’ll come?’ Maurice and Roger put up their hands. ‘Maurice—’ ‘Yes, Chief?’ ‘Where was their fire?’ ‘Back at the old place by the fire rock’” (232).
Maurice being funny:
“Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones. Maurice followed, laughing, and added to the destruction” (84).
“[Ralph] leapt to his feet and trotted back to the pool, just as Maurice did a rather poor dive. Ralph was glad of a chance to change the subject. He shouted as Maurice came to the surface. ‘Belly flop! Belly flop!’ Maurice flashed a smile at Ralph who slid easily into the water” (91).
“Maurice, who had been standing ready to dive, swayed back on his heels, made a bolt for the platform, then swerved back to the grass under the palms. There he started to pull on his tattered shorts, to be ready for anything. [...] Maurice had got both legs through one leg of his shorts [...] Maurice’s trousers gave way with a sigh and he abandoned them as a wreck“ (92-93). [this one might work for the dumb category]
“Then Maurice pretended to be the pig and ran squealing into the center, and the hunters, circling still, pretended to beat him” (105).
“For now the littluns were no longer silent. They were reminded of their personal sorrows; and perhaps felt themselves to share in a sorrow that was universal. They began to cry in sympathy, two of them almost as loud as Percival. Maurice saved them. He cried out. ‘Look at me!’ He pretended to fall over. He rubbed his rump and sat on the twister so that he fell in the grass. He downed badly; but Percival and the others noticed and sniffed and laughed. Presently they were all laughing so absurdly that the biguns joined in” (123). [this one also works for the next category]
“This time Robert and Maurice acted the two parts; and Maurice’s acting of the pig’s efforts to avoid the advancing spear was so funny that the boys cried with laughter” (195).
Maurice being nice/having morals:
“Only Percival began to whimper with an eyeful of sand and Maurice hurried away. In his other life Maurice had received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now, though there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing. At the back of his mind formed the uncertain outlines of an excuse. He muttered something about a swim and broke into a trot” (84).
“Then at last Maurice broke the silence. He changed the subject to the only one that could bring the majority of them together. ‘Where did you find the pig?’” (104).
“Ralph held out the glimmering conch and Maurice took it obediently” (124).
“‘I hit him,’ said Ralph again, ‘and the spear stuck in a bit.’ He felt the need of witnesses. ‘Didn’t you see me?’ Maurice nodded. ‘I saw you. Right bang on his snout—Wheee!’” (162).
Maurice being dumb:
“My daddy says there’s things, what d’you call’em that make ink—squids—that are hundreds of yards long and eat whales whole” (125). [this isn’t dumb in itself, but he was suggesting that the Beast might be a squid coming out of the water]
And best of all:
“Roger and Maurice found room for a hand-hold” (53).
“[Maurice] paused again and laughed gaily” (125).
lmao those last ones were taken out of context
