y axis: degree to which they are important to the story in a way that isn't made obvious, or something along those lines (degree to which they embody the story's themes? Degree to which they are the story's emotional core? degree to which they're the most important character in the story? all despite not being the protagonist) Denji is the protagonist and thus rock bottom, Marisa is the deuteragonist who in some ways takes the lead more than Reimu, the yukaribel exclusion zone... you recently had a not so subtle poll about dungeon meshi with the names stripped off where Marcille was referred to as the protagonist and that's perhaps the biggest hint I'm leaning on
Nope!

Okina Matara:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third and most recent of Gensokyo's founders to appear, is Okina Matara, the Secret God. She is a god of many things. A mother god. A god of the disabled and ostracized. A god of Noh theater. A god of silkworm breeding and insect metamorphosis. Perhaps most notably, she's the god of backdoors.
Okina Matara is a god of immense power, on par with if not more powerful than Yukari Yakumo. She boasts that she could snap Gensokyo out of existence and then back into existence without breaking a sweat. Essentially, the only reason why anyone in this series is still alive is because Okina Matara sees no reason to kill them.
While ZUN has implied Hecatia is more powerful, there hasn't been any real comparison between them to show this. Especially since Hecatia doesn't really throw her weight around the way Okina does.
As far as her actual powers, they primarily revolve around creating backdoors on anything. In this way she is able to open portals to and from anywhere in almost the same way Yukari can. Her backdoors can also be opened up on anyone's behind and transfer immense power to them.
Okina Matara first appeared as the main villain and final boss of Touhou 16: Hidden Star in Four Seasons. She used her backdoors, along with her backup dancers, to draw out the latent powers of people in Gensokyo. Allegedly, her plan was to find powerful people to hire as replacement minions for Satono and Mai. However, her real plan was simply to announce herself to Gensokyo, and remind everyone of her and her vast powers. Her reactions to the player character depend on who you're playing as.
• She rejects Reimu on the spot, saying that she's already Yukari's servant, she doesn't want the Hakurei Shrine maiden.
• She also rejects Aya on the spot, as warding off Tengu is another of her many domains.
• She doesn't even consider Cirno as a potential servant and reprimands her dancers for letting some stupid fairy inside.
• With Marisa, however, she actually asks the ordinary witch to become her new servant. However, Marisa refuses, not wanting to replace her life of freedom with being a mindless pawn.
During the initial fight, she turned the protagonist's season energy against them, since the power came from her putting a door on their back in the first place. She was seemingly invincible.
However, the protagonists challenged her to a rematch for the Extra Stage, where the protagonist used the power of Doryu (the Chinese concept of the border between seasons) to defeat her properly. It was here she revealed her true form... which pretty much looks the same as normal except she's not on her chair.
Since then, she's manipulated events in Gensokyo from the shadows. While she doesn't seem to outright want to replace her backup dancers, she has a pattern of finding one person in Gensokyo she really likes, and slowly manipulating events to their advantage, seemingly to gain their support. Maybe she really does want new minions?
She quickly appeared again in Touhou 16.5: Violet Detector. Or rather, her Dream World counterpart did. Here, she gave a power boost to the Dream World Sumireko because she admired her determination to escape the Dream World into reality.
She appeared in The Grimoire of Usami, showing up alongside Shinmyoumaru and Seija when they hijacked Reimu's fireworks festival. She was quickly revealed to have acted as an anonymous benefactor for Shinmyoumaru, subtly leading her to people who would agree with her view that spellcards are a weapon first and foremost. It seems that she was trying to play "catch up" on all the powerful women she missed out on during her long absence. She especially loved Junko's appearance, and was impressed when it turned out Junko's murder-frenzy was just an act.
She then appeared as the main antagonist of the finale of the manga Visionary Fairies in Shrine. She used her vast powers to turn almost all the fairies of Gensokyo into red crystals called Soul Cherries, which in turn reduced Gensokyo to a barren wasteland. The remaining fairies (which of course consisted of all the named ones) figured out she was behind it and challenged her to a fight to save their friends.
It was a one-sided slaughter and Okina wasn't even trying very hard. Okina grabbed Clownpiece by the neck, and told her to tell her superiors about the power of Gensokyo's Hidden God. She then immediately changed mood and turned all the fairies back to normal! It turns out the entire reason for her plan, was that she had heard that the forces of Hell were intruding into Gensokyo, and she wanted to test if they were actually planning on taking over. Hecatia actually told Clownpiece to collect all the Soul Cherries and take them to Hell, but Clownpiece defied her master/mother figure, and Okina figured they really weren't a threat.
Her most recent appearance was in Touhou 17.5: Sunken Fossil World. Here, she lured people down into the deepest levels of Old Hell in order to fight the main villain, but her real target was Flandre Scarlet, returning in a game for the first time in 20 years! More about that later.
ZUN has said Okina Matara is loosely based on him wanting to show that disabled people weren't useless or weak, but were actually stronger for it. I say loosely, because Okina isn't actually handicapped, as ZUN was scared of portraying her offensively or making her disability an informed attribute. She is often seen in a wheelchair, but apparently this is not because she's disabled, but because she represents disability as a concept. She's perfectly capable of walking around if she wants. Personally I think it'd be easier if she just was wheelchair bound rather than that roundabout symbolism explanation but that's me.
Okina Matara is based on two different dieties: Matara-jin, and Okuninushi. If she really is both gods, then she's connected even further to the people of Gensokyo than you could ever know. She saved the White Hare of Inaba (Tewi Inaba) from being skinned alive. She adopted the human guise of Hata no Kawakatsu and knew Shoutoku Taishi (Miko) personally. Shoutoku comissioned her to make 66 masks, effectively making her the mother of Kokoro. She was even the father of Takeminakata, and thus should technically be Kanako's mom or mother-in-law! And yes, you heard me right, he was a dude in the original mythology.
Okina has a fairly... incomprehensible morality. Generally she acts callous towards Gensokyo, perfectly content with turning it into a barren wasteland to get what she wants. Yet, she also has a soft side. She allowed dozens of servant youkai to "work from home" in her pocket dimension for seemingly no reason other than the goodness of her heart. In general, whenever she appears, it's because she's found someone neglected by Gensokyo (not necessarily the fans), she becomes obsessed with them, and manipulates events to show the true potential of this person, often directly assisting them.
Furthermore, while she is god of the ostracized, she respects anyone who shows impressive power and doesn't hold back. In general, ZUN describes her as "one of the old gods", a woman beyond human concepts of morality. But with absolute certainty, she is an immense boon as an ally and a nightmare as an enemy.
Her relationship with the other Sages is bittersweet. She seems to enjoy Kasen's company, but Kasen hates her as much as Yukari. Her interactions with Yukari in the Grimoire of Usami show them as something of... frenemies. Yukari insults her and calls her a casual fan of Gensokyo, but they seem to respect each other's power.
Her relationship with her backup dancers is a bit mixed as well. She considers them incompetent and sometimes wants to replace them, but it seems that bumbling is also just endearing enough to her that she keeps them around.
Each of those flames on her represents a different season: orange for autumn, blue for winter, pink for spring, and green for summer.
In her first fight, she shoots kunai according to this four-color pattern. In her second fight, however, she fires kunai in reverse-rainbow order, beginning with purple and moving back to red and then magenta.
In her first fight, her spellcards are based on the four seasons, with the last attack being the season of the player character. In this last attack, she sucks out the seasonal powers of the player character, weakening them. She also takes you out of the World of Backdoors and all around Gensokyo!
In her Extra boss fight, her spellcards are based on all her various domains, like silkworm breeding, burning rituals to scare away Tengu, or theatre performers. They mostly emphasize her nature as god of backdoors, with many of them involving her attacking you from behind. She also has an attack where laser beams fire at you from the shape of the Big Dipper. Her final attack has her shooting a bunch of magenta laser rings at you while she moves around in circles, called "Anarchy Bullet Hell". This is a pun on "anaaki", meaning "holed" in Japanese.
In Sunken Fossil World, her attacks create portals to throw all kinds of liquid at you: water, petroleum, and blood.

I remember seeing EoSD explicitly states that either Reimu OR Marisa go out to resolve the incident, but definitely not both. Do any other games in the series have this kind of specification? The closest I can recall is the intro to LoLK which doesn't technically say the four protagonists are working together, but that is the most reasonable interpretation of what would happen after Eirin tells Reisen to go get Reimu and her friends help. Other than those, are there any other games that have a canon answer to "Protagonists definitely working together"/"Protagonists definitely not working together" or perhaps common fannon explanations?
imperishable night is also the protagonists definitely not working together bc of stage 4 (ditto for lls, but we're ignoring pc98 for this). phantasmagoria of flower view and unfinished dream are everyone just kind of individually wandering around aimlessly but they're also different types of game.
but in terms of the text... i don't really think so? there's not really anything that definitely says one way or the other, other than obviously that the characters are having conversations that would be odd if three other people were also there with them at the time. but like, the rest of canon just kind of vaguely gestures to the incidents, so you could absolutely contrive some multiplayer experiences for them. even eosd and in. don't let the text of the work stop you from having a good time

Touhou protagonist likability ratings, Effy style:
Reimu: seems pretty standoffish. Interesting but not particularly likable without knowing her.
Marisa: personable but keeps people at a distance, I would say. Imagine being so hard up for friends you have to call on Nitori to provide your C shot... Likable, but perhaps not easy to befriend beyond being a casual acquaintance.
Sakuya: seems kind of married to her job, also maybe her jokes are kind of annoying to be on the receiving end of.
Youmu: her coping mechanism seems like it would be aggravating for me to have to interact with. That's my problem, of course, but still.
Sanae: awful. Aggravating. Too close to a younger me for comfort while being the same age and worse.
Reisen: I'd get mad seeing how she treats the other rabbits.
Aya: hahahahahahaha
Cirno: what's with this sassy... feral child?
Sumireko: grrr argh I hate children. Go play with your Line stamps or something.
Hatate: Never would meet her in person and would thus never know.

Fantasy Nature | Artist: Jenevan
Story 1 Reimu Hakurei is the Hakurei shrine maiden and, as such, plays a key role in the goings-on of Gensokyo. While she treats everyone equally, she doesn't tend to grow attached to anyone either. Most of the time, she's pretty carefree and lazy, but she springs into action when there's an incident to resolve.
Story 2 Hakurei Shrine is located on the east edge of Gensokyo, on the border between it and the outside world. It isn't the only shrine in Gensokyo anymore, but it has retained its significance, and the shrine maiden is just as lazy as ever. The shrine hardly gets any worshipers, and the only human visitor of note is a magician who just comes to chat with Reimu. In contrast, the number of youkai that hang around the shrine increases with each incident or disturbance that Reimu resolves.
Story 3 Reimu is known as the Mysterious Flying Shrine Maiden, even though being able to fly is a common trait among the girls who engage in battles of bullets. However, it could be said that Reimu flies better than anyone, considering that she attained her Fantasy Nature Last Word by going beyond the limits of usual flight. This unrestrained attack grants Reimu the ultimate freedom and leads her to heights unattainable by anyone else. Perhaps it is only the presence of the people around her that keep her from transcending the bounds of humanity.
Story 4 The interpretations of Last Words are as varied as their users. It's the Spell Card you save until you need it most, the ace in the hole, a battle-deciding secret technique, the ultimate attack, or just a special move… However, there's one thing consistent between every interpretation. If a Last Word is declared, they will be the last words spoken until the battle of bullets is decided.
Story 5 "Reimu…" "What's up, Marisa?" "I don't care if you use that Last Word against anyone else, but don't use it against me, OK?" "Huh? You talk as if we're gonna seriously battle someday. Why would we ever do that?"

Demons Unleashed ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Gaiden Pt. 21 ~
Reimu : So, Marisa. You sure got better plans on stopping an Eldritch Monster?
Marisa : Oh yes, It's the perfect solution on being a world-famous monster hunter, I know how to deal with this one.
Reimu : Let's all be too hasty if we summoned this Eldritch being that resurrected a girl who died about 1000 years ago.
Marisa : Sakura, do you copy?
Izayoi : (via radio) Izayoi to Marisa, I'm loud and clear. copy that. So it's best that I would await this creature's visiting. Do you got everything prepared.
Marisa : Me and Reimu set up a trap for the creature, and it would be possible for this creep to be stopped I set up a spell, that trigger a force so that we capture that girl-turning eldritch monster.
Izayoi : (via radio) It'll be like giving a mouse a cookie, and this cookie will be the oldest trick in the book, catching a predator is like hunting ferocious animals that scourge in the woods from hunting their prey.
Marisa : Even if it costs us the countryside from this monster wonder, let's get it done until we will hit the end of month, I get it.
Reimu : Ready, Marisa?
Marisa : Ready.
Reimu : Ready guys?
Wriggle : We're ready as we please.
Reimu : Okay, get into position, so stay quiet and don't even make a sound. Quick, here she some comes. [footsteps approaching]
(Iris humming a tune)
Reimu : [quietly] Alright there she is. We'll just get a close eye on the trap we are luring her. This is our big opportunity to catch a monster. We are so good of being professional monster hunters and this is what supernatural comes to dark fantasy.
Marisa : Who else? Maybe it's like we're cooking up a storm or something. Gotta make sure we're on track on catching this monster.
Reimu : She's gonna do it. She's gonna lure into the trap we installed, this is gonna be a good classic of monster hunting experience. I hope this will eventually avenge those who attacked Yuuka Kazami's farm.
Marisa : Who would've that a girl who turned into an eldritch monster would fell into a trap, this would definitely go off the bucket list to solve Japan's eldrtich of all eldritch horror?
??? : Eldritch Horror you say? Well do not fear because I believe that this is a problem to you!
(Iris humming and then stops)
Reimu & Marisa : (yelling in horror)
Izayoi : Reimu, Marisa! What happened!?
Reimu : (via radio) It's another Eldrtich Horror, I think we found ourselves a lively one and it's here! This is the Eldritch that resurrected Shinra's beloved!
Izayoi : Say what?
*DBZ SFX : Instant Transmission*
Izayoi : !? (throws knife, but the creature deflects it)
[Anubis (Impossible) - Maki Kirioka]
Izayoi : What the heck is this thing!? Is it another Eldritch being, it looks humanoid but it's still a monster that has...(the creature grew out it's wings) Wings!? What the hell does this creature drinking on, Red bull or something?
??? : Perhaps that you would be mistaken someone from drinking some fluid you call it "Red Bull", but the only ones that are red that is your blood that I can taste for it. I was the one who resurrected Shinra's beloved Iris. I am the Angel of Death. call me "Angie".
"ANGIE : ANGEL OF DEATH."
Izayoi : So this eldritch god that grew out it's wings is the Angel of Death. (talks into the walkie-talkie) Guys! I found another suspect!
Reimu : (via radio) Who is it this time? Is it someone else?
Izayoi : It's the Angel of Death, this is the Eldritch being that resurrected a nun from Soul Eater's universe 1000 years ago. He must've resurrected her with one of the Eldritch powers that Saya was given to.
Reimu : (via radio) What!? That Eldritch God is Angie you say? That Eldritch bastard! Who does he think he resurrecting a dead girl that made her into an eldritch monster!?
Angie : No, she's no monster neither you call her a beast. She is capable of a being who wanted to transcend her into the powers of a God. You will be all pleased if you will handle her with ease.
Izayoi : I'm not gonna take this seriously, but I have no choice but to fight this thing and get it over with! Reimu, Marisa! Get everyone to evacuation and bring all the civilians to safety!
Reimu : 10-4! Copy that! Marisa! we gotta stick to plan B!
Marisa : What's plan b?
Reimu : You'll find out shortly. I know something that will might help.
Iris : I smell humans that lurks in the sunflowers of my heritage, I regret them for sabotaging the beauty of these flowers shall get a good smell from the reddish things that are their flesh and blood, and yet, they are still scourging through this land.
Reimu : Hey, sister! Over here, ya human-eating Eldritch! I'm wide open, so I got attacks to make you eat dirt off the ground!
Marisa : And if you will not leave, we'll make you leave, by going all the way through! It's going to be taking less a minute until we discourage the Eldritch, it's about to get a little hasty with this Eldritch creature going for take outs! Come on, monster! You wanna eat something that is delicate to you, then I got a delivery just for you, a monster butt-kicking delivery!
Iris : Hmph! You seemed to be making a lot of jokes that then to be at one's comedy for no reason, too bad all of that comedy stuff will be your final act. I will make the sunflowers fields your final resting spot and I will make you savor the blood as my treat!
Reimu : So, Marisa. Are we winging it or we're going to be Eldrtich food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
Marisa : Hope were not monster food, cause I don't look that very tasty.
Reimu : Guess it's your call. Double or nothing!
Iris : Hmph. I guess this a little too dull for you. Guess I'm gonna make you go a little light weighted.
Reimu : What does that even mean? (Iris uses her telekinesis to lift the two up) Woah! What's happening!? What's going on!?
Marisa : Uhh, Reimu? I think we're being picked up by force.
Reimu : Force? So does that mean she is using...(realizing) I get it now, she's using eldritch powers but she's using telekinesis that is supernatural. It's like she has the power to use the force.
Iris : Time for a take out! (pushes the girls back by force)
Reimu & Marisa : WOAAAAAAAAH!!! *DBZ SFX : Wall Hit/Crash*
Reimu : Gee! What's with this girl!? She's using eldritch powers but why is she using telekinesis? How did a girl manage to use the power of an Eldritch?
Marisa : Well, it's because eldritch being clearly have a power called ESP, it's how humans and eldritch would have the ability to control things without using their hands and even move things such as objects.
Reimu : Of course, she's using Eldrtich Power and ESP, that's Psychokinesis!
Marisa : Psychokinesis!? Well, that's no fair share of mine! That's Iris for ya!
Izayoi : What's going? How can this thing be at top speed!? Fast and quick! I was so close to beat this thing! Pretty slick! Let's see if you candle my knives throws! (throws multiple knives to attack angie)
Angie : Gah!
Izayoi : That went well!
Angie : Not bad! You're pretty good at this, you'll might pass the test to win this duel against me.
Izayoi : Hmph! This might get lucky for me, so this is the reason that I'm gonna win big here!
(the barrier activates to trap Iris)
Marisa : BINGOOO!!! We have you cornered! So give up now!
Reimu : Double or Nothing, Marisa! Time get into one phrase, the more the merrier.
Marisa : Right.
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Stop what you're doing!
Reimu : Huh? Who goes there?
Marisa : Hey, what's that little guy doing inside of a machine? That's a Dark Chao Walker ain't it?
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : The name is Shinra Kusakabe, I'm the one who created the world of Soul Eater and that girl over is Iris, she was that person that I always knew, the rightful to be the person that I could protect. She was the only one that I eventually care about.
Reimu : So you're the one behind that this Soul Eater crap! You think that you had the answer of making Maka's world like that? You did all of that and you're responsible for creating Shinigami guy, in fact that he wasn't Shinigami, he was that man-made son of yours was it?
Marisa : You were the one who spreaded all of this lying, didn't you?
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Maybe I am right, but our author is such a joke to all of Japan. Guess I take the Ohkuboverse fair and square, lies are the lies, but I always seek into Truth.
Angie : What defiance is this!
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : What the...who are you? I see, you're the eldritch bastard who resurrected Iris when went into reincarnation for the resurrection.
Angie : That is true.
[Showdown - Yutaka Minobe]
Angie : I recreated her life, yet is still a human to become stable. When you defeated the Evangelist that turns out to be an astral puppet, we have discovered from somewhere on the planet was ceased to function by the hero himself, Hercules. Records saying that the so-called Kishin was only a puppet to the heartless, it was trying to open the door to darkness in order for Demon Vibe to unveil his dream of Galactic Conquest.
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : You cretin!
Angie : Hold that tongue of yours! Speak wisely, or else that you will never see this girl again.
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : !?
*DBZ SFX : Surprise*
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Iris!
Iris : ...Shinra-kun...
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : (looking down) ...Iris...
Reimu : Wait, those two know each other?
Marisa : It seems those two are lovebird from 1000 years before, they first met in his old world while it was sabotaged by Demon Vibe and Sephiroth's likeliness, just before he created the world that Maka was living in.
Reimu : That all makes sense now.
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Iris...
Iris : Shinra-Kun...you never broke our promise, didn't you?
Shinra : Of course, I didn't. The only reason to keep you safe is that I was the one who will able to protect you, I would keep this precious smile to you.
Iris : Shinra-Kun....You finally remembered me this time. (holds head in pain) Gaaah! (grunting in pain) Gomenasai, Gomenasai, Shinra-Kun! (uses her telekinesis push the two back by force)
Reimu & Marisa : YAAAAAAAAAH!!! *Samurai Jack SFX : Collapse* What gives!?
Iris : (puts hand on glass) Gomene...(does an indirect kiss on Shinra)
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : ...!? (evades)
Iris : Sayonara. (unleshes an pyrokinetic force to burn the entire Sunflower fields) *DBZ SFX : Loud Explopsion*
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : ...IRIIIIIIS!!!
Iris : Until me again *DBZ SFX : Instant Transmission*
Angie : Farewell. *Instant Transmission*
[It's here/Run Away!! (Station Fire/UFO) - Akira Miyagawa]
Reimu : Holy cow! She set the whole fields on fire!
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Time for me to leave the scene! (flees in his Dark Chao Walker)
Izayoi : Reimu, Marisa!
Reimu : Izayoi, gladly that you finally bought us some time to be here. This place is on fire! We gotta get everyone soon as possible!
Marisa : (covers mouth to cough) We can't stand all of this fire! All of that smoke is literally bad for our health, we can't to breathe from here! It's too risky to be alive if we're gonna to survive!
Wriggle : HEY! CAN ANY OF YOU HURRY UP!? WE'RE GONNA GET ROASTED HERE!
Izayoi : (coughs) If only there was a way to stop this chaos, it would be a major problem to get out of here!
Yuuka : Let's all pray.
*RAIN FALLING*
Yuuka : Huh? It's beginning to rain? Who would've done this?
??? : Sorry, there! But we have arrived, help is here to put out the fire.
Reimu : Oh, you must be that Tillis person, You're Tillis of the Burning Rangers!
Yuuka : Burning Rangers?
[Soothing Heat - Fumie Kumatani]
Tillis : Thank goodness that I was going to put out all of this fire.
"Tillis : Ex-Member of the Burning Rangers."
Reimu : You're one hell of a firefighter, I mean a Burning Ranger.
Marisa : How can we ever repay for fixing up all of this burning mess? That nun just set the whole place on fire right after the fight.
Izayoi : I look forward to your humble deeds, I consider that you would do fine with everything that you have us in store.
Tillis : That's one thing's sure, I always keep out on a promise. You two alright, you need anything for help?
Reimu : Well, yes. I guarantee you that it would our pleasure to get everyone safety. But we don't know of what happened to the farmers.
Tillis : Don't worry, the farmers are fine, but 70% percent of the Sunflowers fields have been damaged by the flames of pyrokinetic force, that's where the pyrokinesis originated from Firaga. I explain this to you right after these details that I am giving you. Come to my place. I'll show you around.
Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : (Talks into communicator) I'm on way. Heading back now. (leaves when Dark Chao Walker flies off)
*DBZ SFX : Blasting off*

I found an anomalous Fandom wiki that has confused me to my very core and I need to talk about it with SOMEONE or else I will implode
Okay so the wiki is about a ficticious adult comedy show made in GoAnimate called Burngoberrie that "aired" on MTV and Comedy Central; It's the kind of unexplainable thing that children who have had unrestricted internet access from an extremely young age make and it makes me supremely confused.
I found it out from MegaFrog's video on Weird Touhou Wikis and I already knew it was strange just from the video, but just a bit ago someone in a Discord Server I'm in discovered a weird channel made by a kid that reminded me of this, so I decided to check it out, and it is so much weirder than I thought.
Okay so, this "show" has a mishmash of characters from a ton of different other properties (mostly kids' shows) and, of course, Touhou Characters. Mix this with the fact that the plots of the "episodes" of this show include such things as a machine that turns people Gay and Daphne being a Porn Star, and you get perhaps the most bizzare ficticious cross-over show to ever exist.
Strangely enough the way the episodes' plots are summed up in the List of Episodes page is similar to how Wikipedia would do it; This, alongside the clearly not child-friendly things detailed in the episode plots (Like Porn Stars, Sex and 'Cana-syphil-AIDS') leads me to believe someone older, likely a Teenager, made this, which just confuses me more, but that's beside the point.
No, what I wanna talk about here is the pages about Touhou, because they confuse me. First off, they make pages about Touhou Games, except the names are mispelled (or maybe they're changing them on purpose, I'm not sure) and they're using fake cover art they probably made in paint, but that's the least baffling thing here, no, the most baffling thing is the character pages for said games.
For some fucking reason, instead of putting the actual characters of the games in the pages, they put a ton of random characters that have nothing to do with Touhou, and, for some reason, in every page for the characters of the games, Reimu and Marisa are replaced with 'Eleanor Little' and 'Dr. Marisa Kendall' respectively, and I'm extremely confused. Also the Seihou Games are called 'Auntgoberrie' games instead for some reason.
The only character page I have seen which actually contains a Touhou character is the page for the cast of a ficticious game called 'Touhou V.S Burngoberrie,' where you play as, get this, Konngara from Touhou 1, whose page on the wiki contains ship art for some reason.
I am so confused.

Okay, this is going to be a long post but. I've had a few sets of new ocs existing in my notes and the back of my mind for a bit. So consider this post an opportunity both for me to develop some basic details on them and to advertise them.
The main purpose of this post though, for me, is to gauge interest in different ideas to decide what to focus in on. It's possible I may wind up eventually adding all of these ocs, it may also be that I wind up never taking up any of them. Whatever the case it helps to know what y'all are into most.
Thus at the end of this post there's a poll to vote on who you're most interested in. There's no option on polls to allow folks to vote for more than one but if you're interested in more than one group and have multiple blogs feel free to vote more than once, since I'm looking at the number of votes gotten instead of just percent of votes.
Normally when I do a long post like this I prefer to stick a readmore on it. But polls can be finicky and I'm worried that will break it, so instead I'm going to just make this a long post and hope folks have that feature that reduces the size of long posts until you open 'em. If not, I'm sorry.
Anyways, onto talking about the ocs. I tend to do ocs in groups and that's particularly the case with 2hu ones, so they have been grouped into sections based on that. You don't need to read all of this but please take a look at whatever interests you and then give an answer on the poll please.
Also a disclaimer again: I am not a native Japanese speaker and only half understand Japanese naming conventions so very real possibility these names'll suck and be cringe/culturally inaccurate.
Second disclaimer: They're still in the idea stage so a lot of this, particularly face claims and names, are subject to potential change. In regards to face claims I actually challenged myself to only make use of icons from my collection, though I had to make an exception for the Akali icons since I had no one with a face mask among them.
Train to Gensokyo
Now this one is an idea I've partially talked about in the past. Of which I drummed up one of those posts here, which contains some more info.
The basic gist of this set is the idea of a ghost train from the outside world being brought into Gensokyo. The kind from folklore that travels and travels at midnight, never actually stopping at any stations. Forced to eternally wander. Though their arrival in Gensokyo finally allows them some rest.
Being a vehicle that existed a bit later (this particular train not all trains) than when Gensokyo closed its borders, much of the guests and staff of the train are "youkai" of a little more modern variety. Not exactly the ULoL sense but something similar. With The Ghost Train acting as a home to modern monsters and crytpids, like Teke-Teke.
I imagine that their arrival causes some incident (with Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, and special guests Mamizou + Lunasa as my little headcanon incident resolvers) but that soon after they integrate into Gensokyo's community, providing a new and quicker form of travel.
Kurashiki (倉敷) Miharu (未時)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face claim: Chain Sumeragi (Kekkai Sensen)
Ironically Miharu was the first character I envisioned when I started working on this project, not just the train section but those ocs in general, yet I haven't actually determined what kind of youkai she is. Presently, the idea I'm working with is that she is perhaps some form of dead human. The conductor of The Ghost Train before it became a, well, ghost train, that has become a spirit along with it.
Miharu's ability allows her and her train to always arrive on time. Through a tiny bit of time manipulation, The Ghost Train always reaches its destination exactly when it needs to. Though, despite this, Miharu is still quite neurotic about making sure it actually does travel with as few delays as possible. Mostly out of a fear of what may happen if it doesn't.
Other notes on Miharu are: that as a word pun she is a conductor (operates a train) and a conductor (leads an orchestra). With each of the other crew members of The Ghost Train operating some sort of makeshift musical instrument. As well as that, I like to imagine her as having some sort of history with Mamizou. Given Mamizou is also a recent arrival in Gensokyo and Tanuki being the enemies of trains in folklore.
When I created these characters I noted down the reasonings behind most their names, as you will see with the coming ones, but I lost the notes on Miharu and Reiko. What I can say, however, is that Kurashiki comes from Zero Escape: 999, as that happens to be a personal favorite of mine.
In the Ghost Train Incident, Miharu is the Stage six boss.
Zantetsu (斬鉄) Reiko (麗心)
Tumblr media
Face Claim: Chise Hatori (Ancient Magus Bride)
Reiko is a teke-teke. A vengeful spirit of a girl killed by a train, split in half, whose upper body now drags itself along the ground. The remains of her lower half making a scratchy teke-teke sound as they scrape against the floor. A scythe wielded in her hand as she seeks out victims to steal their legs.
Of course this teke-teke, as with a lot of youkai in Gensokyo, is a tad bit chiller than how she exists in folklore. As with much of the staff of the Ghost Train, Reiko was once simply a passenger aboard the train. One who chose to take up a role as a crew member. Reiko takes the role of porter, loading and unloading the luggage of the train's rare passenger. This may sound difficult given that she drags along the ground, but remember that basically everyone in Touhou can fly.
Reiko has the ability to protect an object. So long as she is holding it within her hands, an object of her choice cannot be damaged. She uses this to make certain luggage makes it to the proper hub of the train.
In the train's makeshift band, Reiko uses her scythe and lower bones as a set of instruments to scrape along a metal surface.
As I noted above, Reiko is the other one that I lost the notes on the name origin of. But the name Reiko is a reference to the name often given to the girl of the actual Teke Teke legend (Kashima Reiko).
Reiko is the Ghost Train Incident's Stage 1 Midboss.
Hasami (八社宮) Hanako (はなこ)
Tumblr media
Face Claim: Akali (League of Legends) [Akali is fine but I mostly chose her because I don't know many characters with masks, so of all the face claims this is the most likely to change]
Hanako is the stewardess of the Ghost Train and a Kuschisake-Onna. A vengeful spirit with a split mouth that gives similar injury to those that she encounters. Of course, just like with Reiko, Hanako is chiller than the average Kuchisake-onna. Working peacefully on the train.
Though, it should be noted, she almost never removes her mask, even around her coworkers. Hanako is actually quite self-conscious about the look. Owing to the fact that the Ksuchisake-onna in legends can be distracted with hard candy, she has a major sweet tooth and sometimes winds up snacking on the candy that passengers order before getting it to them.
Hanako has the ability to duplicate herself within the Ghost Train. Or to put it another way, to exist at multiple points within the train at once. This ability does not function outside of the train (though the original her may be off the train while her duplicates continue to exist within) but allows for a far greater convience of service than what one woman normally could provide.
Family name Hasami is a gag as Hasami (八社宮) is a name but Hasami (はさみ) is the word for scissors. The first name is made of meaningless katakana but contains the first kana of scissors.
Hanako is the Stage 1 boss of the Ghost Train Incident.
Animal House
Alright listen. I like Mafia and Yakuza stories. Be it something like the Godfather (I read the novel for the first time back in highschool), Goodfellas, or the Like a Dragon Franchise, or even the occasional triad story from Hong Kong action films. Suffice to say I've got a real soft spot for crime families.
I also really like Toutetsu Yuuma. Who happens to be the head of an entire criminal alliance in the Animal Realm. One that we've seen no member of besides herself (unless we count the eagle spirits).
Owing to these two facts I wanted to design some underlings for her. To give her more people to bounce off of besides her enemies and to do fun criminal stuff with. Now within the Animal Realm Yuuma's alliance is specifically known for their aerial power. They're also from the Animal Realm, you know for animals. For those reasons I tried to design Youkai that fit two critea:
-Were an animal or something animal themed
-Were a flying creature (granted again everyone in Touhou can fly but I think ya get what I mean).
Given that Yuuma canonically prefers to handle things herself, her underlings have been left sitting on the sidelines during most of the events of canon. But with Yuuka's priorities elsewhere they've now found a bit more responsibility dropped on their shoulders.
And just to get it out of the way lets end this with the note that, because I'm like that, each of the ocs in this group share a surname with a Like A Dragon/Yakuza antagonist. Doesn't necessarily mean they have anything to do with one another.
Mine (峯) Honoka (火佳): Junior Chairwoman of the Gouyouki Alliance
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face claim: KK (Kekkai Sensen)
Ah the mythical Kirin (or Qilin). Just as Yuuma's own beast, a Taotie, has its roots in Chinese monsters so too does her second in command. Now a Kirin is a dragon-deer or unicorn esque mythical beast said to run through the sky by flying. One that's appearance is generally said to mark either the birth or death of a great leader or philospher.
In the case of Honoka she arrived in the Animal Realm shortly before Toutetsu Yuuma herself. Being herald to her own coming to power. The pair have worked together for quite some time since then, with Honoka being an informal second in command of the Gouyoku Alliance. With Yuuma preoccupied with the lake of blood/oil, Honoka has been doing most of the actual management of their family.
Unlike her superior, she is stoic and not one for talking. Preferring listening or action. While Yuuma has a tendency to disarm her opponents with words, talking them into joining her side, Honoka would really prefer to just beat them into submission. Yet, outside of a brawl, she is slow to act. Considering every option for far longer than necessary before making a decision.
Honoka has the ability to call upon Fire and Lightning (or more particularly the elements of fire and air). The most unique application of their abilities is to copy the properties of the others. Flames that arc as lightning does and lightning that creeps up objects like a flame.
The Mine part is, of course, a reference to the character of Yakuza with a Kirin as a tattoo and the best theme in the franchise. Honoka I chose because I just happen to think it's a beautiful name but the kanji of it refers to her fire based abilities.
Goda (郷田) Misora (水天): Chairwoman of the Goda Clan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Faceclaim: Shiro (Deadman Wonderland)
Tentomushi or ladybugs. An insect that I like and happen to think have a really rad name. It just so happens that in all my research I could not find any ladybug youkai, so Misora is just a youkai who was once a ladybug. What I do know is that Ladybugs happen to be symbols of good luck.
This plays into Misora's Ability. She is able to manipulate the luck of those around her in two ways. Taking in the fortune of others, granting herself good fortune and others misfortune or taking in the misfortune of others, granting herself misfortune and others good fortune. Don't put her in a room with Shion and Tenshi, she'll die.
Misora is also prone to violence as a solution but unlike Honoka it is not a matter of choosing violence after much contemplation. She's ready to fight at all times and believes the Gou-Alliance should just stomp out all the other families within the Animal Realm. Her boldness and lack of thought has made her an annoying rival for power within the Alliance. While everyone within it looks up to and respects Yuuma, those beneath her are not so equal. With troops being split between both figures.
Now Yakuza does not have a character with a ladybug tattoo. Instead I just went with the family name of one of my favorite antagonists of the franchise. On the other hand Misora's name contains the kanji for water, meant to denote a rivalry with Honoka.
Katsuya (勝矢) Chidori (千鳥): Chairwoman of the Katsuya family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face Claim: Medaka (Medaka Box)
Chidori is an Aosagibi. A type of youkai born from a heron that has lived long enough to become a youkai. Their scales fusing together to form a shiny and iridescent armor. Like Honoka and Misora Chidori is also a major figure within the alliance. Unlike the two of them she is aloof and silent. Choosing to simply observe without interaction. This gives her a mysterious air
But the reality is she's just incredibly shy and doesn't know what to say. She's managed to get to this position mostly from a series of flukes and climbing the ranks with time. She really doesn't like talking in front of people, particularly as a leader, and would prefer that the others just manage it on their own. Though their rivals perceive her as some form of cunning trickster.
Chidori has the ability to produce false light. Those that face her in battle are beset by series of strange balls of harmless light that resemble her actual danmaku. Making it difficult to distinguish actual attacks from random tricks.
Katsuya, again, comes from a Yakuza boss. In this case one from 5 who just so happens to have a crane tattoo ... or a heron ... I mix those two birds up. Anyways Chidori, on the other hand, contains the kanji for birds but I also kinda picked it because the attack from Naruto kind of reminds me of how an Aosagibi apparently looks.
The Robot Masters
This idea was partially inspired, I believe, by my friend Sethy when I discussed wanting to create an oc with an interest more vested in science and specifically robotics.
Katsume (勝目) Light
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face Claim: Xan Audupon (Sennen Meikyuu no Nana Ouji)
A blind hag/magician dwelling upon the mountains of Gensokyo. Light has caught glimpses of the outside world and developed a fascination in the field of robotics. Dreaming of being able to create actual automaton and golems within Gensokyo. ... Yet the sad reality is that they have not been able to accomplish this goal, yet.
Much like how Alice relies on magic to puppet her dolls, Light relies on their own magic to control their automatons. Really nothing more than steel or iron puppets with some gears in them at this point. Though Light has partnered with some kappa for the sake of creating real androids their work has, as of yet, been unsuccessful.
They have the ability to percieve the spiritual. Light is blind and unable to see anything within the physical world, however, when they do open them they become able to see that which is spiritual. Be it the aura of those with magical power, magically invisible beings, or those with a spiritual existence such as Mima. This ability can also be used to place a part of their own spirit within an object in order to see spirits through it. Notably their fake automatons for the sake of enhancing their manipulation of it.
The name Katsume contains the kanji for "win" and "eyes" referring to their eye based ability. On the other hand Light is a double reference to the Megaman scientist Doctor Light and to the character of Snake (real name Light) from ZTD.
Kanagawa (銑川) Yusa (優作)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face Claim: Lee go Seul (Girls of the Wild)
One of the kappa that works with Light. One could almost call her their henchman. Yusa, like most kappa, is great with technology. Specifically iron working and soldering. She works to design the bodies of their false robots. Though the actual programming and wiring are skills she's far less competent with.
When their machines are not being controlled by Light's magic, it is normally Yusa who is controlling them. Mainly through the use of remote control ... controls. Like most kappa, Yusa is rather shy, yet she manages to get along well enough with Light. Having a deep respect for the hag.
Yusa's ability ... I have not figured out yet.
Kangawa has the kanji for iron and the kanji for river. Perfect for a kappa that's working with robotics. Yusa contains the kanji for "Create" and "superior". Originally her name was going to be Sakura (also from create) but I feared it was too close to Sakuya and could get annoying.
The Village People
Alright, now this one is a bit different in that we're not getting youkai. I thought it'd be fun to design some villager ocs. You know to have some fairly normal folks wandering around Gensokyo.
Now, just as a note here, I have given them abilities. My reason for doing so is because just about every named character in Touhou has one, even an "Average" person like Kosuzu. So I thought they'd stand out without them. Also designing weird minor abilities is fun, ya know.
Uruno (沾野) Kaname (火奈芽)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face Claim: Agatsuma Soubi (Loveless)
Kaname is the current head of the Uruno family. A family within the human village that has farmed and sold tobacco within Gensokyo for the last century and a half now. Establishing their business just slightly before the border was closed. In theory they've grown and sold tobacco for the village but now that a few youkai have started smoking, the Uruno clan may have started setting some aside for other business.
Given their profitable trade, Kaname has been able to get by with a fairly comfortable life. The labor of farming the tobacco is tough but he gets to live in one of the nicer houses of the village without fear of wondering if he'll be able to eat come winter. So all and all he is content with his current lot in life.
... Mostly content. The truth is this all has started to become boring and he's developed somewhat of a wanderlust. A wanderlust that seems to be drawing him more and more to the youkai mountain for their gambling parlor. Not that he'd allow anyone in the village to know that's where he has been slipping off to.
Kaname has the ability to ... become dry. When he or his clothing are wet, he is able to instantly dry either with nothing more than a brief thought. He really doesn't understand how it works but he doesn't mind not knowing.
Uruno contains the kanji for "to wet" and "field" which I thought fit well for a farming family. For the name "Kaname", initially I wanted something with kanji that made reference to smoke. There are ... few names that contain a kanji for that and I was not a fan of any. So I decided to go with fire because where there's smoke. Anyways the first one kanji is fire, the others make reference to a tree sprouting fruit. Not quite tobacco but.
Okita (沖田) Muyumi (武弓) Fujiwara (藤原) no Gin (銀).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face claim: Touko Hourai
A distant cousin of the more famed Okita Souji and a long time descendant of the Fujiwara clan (making her vaguely related to Mokou), Muyumi is a samurai by birth. Well, wait. You may be noticing. Japan's samurai caste was abolished before Gensokyo was sealed off from the world. Yes, that is true, but this is a detail kept well concealed by Muyumi's ancestors. Who have propagated the idea that noble samurai such as themselves are very much still a thing within Japan.
As a samurai she has been trained in warfare with the bow, sword, and flintlock. A true warrior and defender of the village's noble caste. Well ... except for the fact that the real defenders of Gensokyo are the incident resolvers, which she is notably weaker than. Meaning that Muyumi is really nothing more than a glorified bodyguard for the elite of Gensokyo ... but she's really been trying hard to convince herself that she's not, that she's more than that.
Muyumi has the ability to memorize poetry. Once she has heard or read a poem she will not forget it and she is able to understand the proper rhythm to recite it just from her reading. Though ... she's absolutely horrendous at creating poems herself.
Okita is, obviously given her lore, taken from the famous Shinsegumi. The Okita clan is descended from the historic Fujiwara clan and, much like the much more famous Okita, this is represented in Muyumi's rarely used full name. Fujiwara no Gin (Fujiwara of Silver) is a pun on the actual Okita Souji's Fujiwara no Kaneyoshi (Fujiwara of Gold)
Masamura (正村) Masafumi (将史)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face Claim: Asaki Minami (Stigmata)
Masamura's clan could be counted among the elite artisans within Gensokyo's human village. Being the only child of the village's doctor and blacksmith of the previous generation, he found an apprenticeship in both thrust upon him. Difficult work but hey doctors used to also be barbers, who said you can't doctor and smith.
The last many years of his life were spend providing both services for the people of the village from his house on the outskirts. Supposedly he's not much of a people's person, hence his dwelling there, though that was not the only reason. Having some sympathy for them, he also offered his medical services to youkai in the dead of the night. After all, he swore to treat the injured, regardless of who they were. A youkai with a horrid cut? That's as much an injury as a human's.
Just ... the thing is that after some time Eirin made her presence known. Eirin, with her ability and centuries of experience, being the notably superior doctor. Though humans did not always wish to trek to see her, and seeing as Reisen only delivered medicine from times to time, Masafumi still had work but it was greatly reduced.
At least he could still blacksmith. A skill that he taught to a sad youkai who seemed without a purpose. Though, she would soon surpass him in ability, providing her services to those that were willing to hire a youkai. Leaving Masafumi again with a reduced amount of customers.
He still can find work, it's not like the poor man is jobless, but with every year in Gensokyo it seems there is less and less for him. As a result he's taken mostly to reading. He has a bit of an interest in old tomes and the study of youkai, meaning he rents books from Kosuzu quite often. Aside from that, however, Masafumi rarely leaves his home anymore. Being something of a hermit (the non magic kind).
He has the ability to hold his breath for an entire 15 minutes.
Masamura uses the kanji of "regular" and "village." The kanji of Masafumi come from the kanji for "lead" and for "book." Which I thought were fitting for a tired but well educated dude. All together they're meant to paint the image of someone plain while also having a fun bit of alliteration.
Sugar Saccharine
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Face claim: Clover (Zero Escape Franchise)
Alrigh, the last one, and this one gets a section all to herself. Sugar is a flesh eating youkai just like a certain Rumia. In fact, though I'm cautious on how much I'll say, she and the Rumia of this blog have quite a bit of history together. With Sugar having been the reason for why Rumia is presently stuck in a regenerative weakened state.
Sugar, for her part, has not been around for a long time. Being buried in a sarcophagus beneath the Hill of the Nameless. Something that Medicine has inadvertedly become a perfect guard for. But, you know, when you seal something away in Gensokyo it's only a matter of time before someone does something stupid and lets them out.
... And people have been having strange dreams lately. The kind that make them feel, for some reason, like they need to go to that hill and start digging. But it's probably just a coincidence.
Sugar has the ability to manipulate souls. Well, I wonder what that could mean?
Poll
Alright with all that out of the way (I hope you didn't read all of this it was a lot, but if you did I thank you for putting time in to check out my ideas). Here's a poll to see who you're more interested in. As I said at the top, if you like more than one idea and have more than one blog you're free to vote more than once.

I feel like 17.5 is perhaps the game that fits this the most. Reimu and Marisa are hardly relevant to the plot so it's basically gods and youkai vs a beast spirit.
And anyhow, Yukari is the one who set up Reimu to her job, yeah?

Kingdom Death: Year 2 [Settlement]
Tumblr media
And with the induction of the poacher, named Run, the settlement has finally reached a population of 15.
Tumblr media
"You seem to finally be getting your act together. Good. Don't be faltering now, you'll all have to work together in order to help me win this game."
Having no other choice, the survivors all collectively agree they need to work together. Mostly because Scorpina would probably kill them otherwise.
But the recent occurrence of someone in the settlement practicing some kind of terrible bone magic has set everyone on edge. And collectively they needed to find the culprit.
Tumblr media
"It's Marisa."
Tumblr media
"Yup, definitely Marisa."
They say, casually hiding a massive pile of bones among Marisa's belongings.
Tumblr media
"What the fuck, guys!?"
And so Marisa was banished, never to be seen again. Probably.
Also three random survivors wandered in as well, consisting of Svetlana, Nitori, and Rinnosuke. Welcome to hell.
Tumblr media
But Illya has no time for these (literal) witch hunts! She has to ponder her newfound philosophy. And also insomnia. She has become fascinated by Scorpina's giant servant that sits just outside the castle.
Perhaps it reminded her of someone in a previous life?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"My lack of sleep also helped me invent a new weapon that I probably saw in Fortnite or something."
There are no video games in this hellscape but toxic gamer Illya transcends realities so I had to make a joke about it somewhere.
Tumblr media
Also hey, remember that Love Juice from the other day?
Fuwa drank it and threw herself at Reimu and got knocked up, and gave birth to twins, and uh...
Tumblr media
"Okay, I understand why Orin has cat ears, but why is Okuu a bird? Neither of us are birds."
Tumblr media
"Listen I'm just as confused as you are."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I hope you aren't planning on raising a bunch of wimps. I'd hate to see what happened if you coddled a bunch of weaklings and failed me. But I suppose I could always use more fodder for my ice statue garden..."
Yeah we're taking Survival of the Fittest.
Tumblr media
"Oh, and also Miasma just absolutely went feral on me and knocked me up, so say hi to Serene everyone! She's here too."
And with that, we now have a population of 20, and our next group of hunters (consisting of Miasma, Illya, Loki, Sakuya, and Lydia the scout) are going after the newly discovered Smog Singers.

In this post I'm going to mash 2 years together, 2011 & 2012. Why? Well almost nothing official releases during that time Forbidden Scrollery does start near the end of 2012, but it's too late in the year for fanworks to use that material. Symposium of Post-mysticism releases early 2012, but I'm unsure of its influence on the fandom.
This should give time for tropes to settle in for the Ten Desires cast at least. I noticed they didn't get much of a focus in 2011. Plus, older characters don't get many new popular interpretations in fanworks, so it was easier to merge the years.
Anyway what happened between 2011-2012 fanworks?
The edgy Byakuren mostly disappears and is replaced by a much sweeter and kinder character. However, she does have a tipping point. Whenever she crosses that line she either becomes extremely menacing and intimidating or obnoxiously horny (it was a common joke that teasing her would reveal an overwhelming sexual desire)
Nazrin continues to be the only sane character in UFO
Koishi appearing in the background for no reason with no one acknowledging her is another GOAT joke. That never gets old.
Kogasa reappears in Ten Desires to the excitement of many fans. I thought this might mean she may actually scare people more consistently...but nope she still fails. You can do it Kogasa!
A new subversion of Yuuka starts to get popular here. Instead of being completely sadistic she's actually very nice and does not talk much. However, she's still very powerful and intimidating so she struggles to socialize when she attempts to. This much quieter Yuuka is almost completely different from earlier interpretations.
A lot of older characters get completely new interpretations of their backstories. It's like a new generation of fans started producing works here.
Medicine still has appearences??? How's this girl staying relevant?
Kasen is a hermit for real lmao.
Kasen also frequently drags Reimu into her dojo for all kinds of training.
Alice is somehow getting shipped with a ton of characters, it's like Marisa and Alice traded romantic tropes all of a sudden.
Yukari's laziness is on an all time high.
Miko's height changes drastically between works, it's pretty jarring.
Futo is very childish? It's a bit unexpected. She can be a little dimwitted in the canon, but it was nothing like acting like a kid.
Tojiko is sometimes Miko's wife.
Komachi is appearing more often in fanon thanks to Wild and Horned Hermit.
Seiga new villain poggers
Yoshika's perfect loyalty to Seiga is sometimes driven by love instead of just complete control. Perhaps this was influenced by the previous "servants" sharing that trait in fanon.
Meiling gets compared to Yoshika a lot, sometimes even being a better guard.
Seiga gets a low amount of appearences despite being a newer character, usually that happens with the 1st bosses, but Ten Desires did have Yuyuko after all.
The EoSD cast remain as popular as ever. It's almost frustrating that other characters are completely ignored compared to them. Almost.
Overall, the status quo doesn't change much here, but I know Kokoro is gonna change that next year.

Tumblr media
(Kosu @ Rirune)
This didn't feel quite right. From what was described to her by Reimu and Marisa, she expected to see something significantly different than the town she was looking at now. Of course, it looked nothing like Gensokyo even so, but still!
She found herself dropped right in the middle, near the window of a tavern. She considered briefly if someone interfered with her travel to the outside world, but opted not to worry about it for now. Not like she could fix it herself, she'd have to wait for whatever, or whoever, to come to her. For now, she'd just look like a completely lost...tourist?
"This is not what I expected at all..." She said, moving to the tavern and taking a look through the window. "Did things just..change? I wonder if that Usami girl is here..."
All she could really think to do was walk inside, and hope someone there was willing to give her some information.
Tumblr media
It really was quite the tavern, and stepping out of Gensokyo and into his tavern really is definitely going to another world.
And as for the owner himself?
Tumblr media
"... Eh?"
That person. That face. He knows her.
What... was her name again? It has been so many years for him, he almost couldn't remember her anymore.
It was... K... something? Well... it doesn't really matter. It'll pop up eventually. Surely not from his home world... right? From the east, perhaps?
Tumblr media
"Nice to meet you, and welcome, Miss! I'm Rirune, the owner of this establishment. I take it that it's your first time here? We got a few drinks, including a few light ones. Of course, if you're looking for a job, there's a few on the board...-"
He definitely knows her, but... it's at the back of his head. Who... exactly was it again?

Urban Legend in Limbo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touhou 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo (2015) is a major benchmark for the series.
The incident this time is that urban legends have spread throughout Gensokyo! These urban legends have tied themselves to certain people who are characterized similar to them. Apparently the urban legends are not able to materialize independently because nobody in Gensokyo fears them like they do youkai.
The Urban Legends are as follows:
• Reimu Hakurei: the Woman inside the Gap (basically Yukari is her urban legend)
• Marisa Kirisame: the Seven Wonders of the School (pretty much every high school in Japan has its own 7 mysteries)
• Kasen Ibaraki: the Monkey's Paw, (a poor substitute for her missing arm)
• Byakuren Hijiri: Turbo Granny (this gives her a motorcycle and a catsuit but it's really about a grandma running along the highway as fast as a motorcycle)
• Toyosatomimi no Miko: Red Mantle, Blue Mantle (she gives you a choice between a red cape and a blue cape and kills you regardless of your decision)
• Ichirin Kumoi: Hasshaku-sama (a Japanese Creepypasta spread on sites like 2chan about a tall dark-haired woman in a sundress)
• Mononobe no Futo: Okiku (a ghost girl who's the main protagonist of an old novel)
• Nitori Kawashiro: the Loch Ness Monster (she thinks it's just an animatronic she made but it's the real deal)
• Mamizou Futatsuiwa: the Men in Black, (it gives her a nice suit and a device that's not a memory eraser. It's just for show. Her tanuki minions are disguised as aliens.)
• Shinmyoumaru Sukuna: Little Green Men (littler than her? I doubt it!)
• Fujiwara no Mokou: Spontaneous combustion (she doesn't even realize the incident is happening for the longest time since blowing herself up is something she already does. The urban legend is mostly manifested by her fire turning blue and thus hotter.)
• Hata no Kokoro: Kuchisake-onna (Pretty? Not pretty? DIE!)
• Koishi Komeiji: Miss Mary (the CALLS ARE COMING FROM RIGHT BEHIND YOU LOOK OUT SHE HAS A KNIFE)
• Reisen Udongein Inaba: Kune-kune (another Creepypasta posted on 2chan in 2001, weird white red-eyed worm creatures that wiggle around upright seen off in the distance that make you go insane if you look at them too long)
Yes, Kasen's urban legend is not so much one as it is a well-known story that nobody thought was real. Same with Futo's.
There are also rumors spreading about seven Occult Balls, that when brought together, can grant any one wish (hey, that sounds familiar...)
The Occult Balls are tied to seven Mystery Spots:
• The Pyramids of Giza
• Stonehenge
• The Tower of Babel
• The Nazca Lines
• Yomotsu Hirasaka
• Hell Valley
• The Lunar Capital
The story itself mostly involves all these girls having whacky role playing fun with their urban legends and discovering the true nature of the Occult Balls. Right up until they go too far and almost cause the destruction of all of Gensokyo.
Strangely enough, despite the severity of this incident, Yukari Yakumo is nowhere to be seen. Instead, Kasen and Mamizou team up to fill her general role. Perhaps Yukari thought one Sage getting involved was enough, or perhaps she's just lazy.
In a rarity for the series, the status quo of Gensokyo is broken in two ways:
A human teenage girl from the outside world makes her way into Gensokyo; and leaves! She becomes a recurring visitor of Gensokyo from heron out, but never fully moves in. This provides the people of Gensokyo a way to hear more about the outside world, mostly in a negative, pessimistic light.
Second, Gensokyo as a whole is poisoned down to the roots: an incident has happened that Reimu could not resolve. Gensokyo has now become a true land of fantasy: if enough people believe something is true, it will be true. The repercussions of this are explored in both mangas running at the time: Wild and Horned Hermit and Forbidden Scrollery, and would continue to be a major element of the series until around 2018, at which point it's kinda forgotten about.
Thus begins a sort of trilogy that follows with Touhou 15: Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, and Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers.
Oh, and this game got a Playstation 4 release, making it the first official Touhou game to be released for consoles.

Regarding Satori. Here are some important notes from Symposium of Post Mysticism
Tumblr media
I wanna note that alongside Yuuka being the one one with an entry of "worst" I believe that Satori is the only one with an entry of "none"
Tumblr media
Being hated for their power is not a Komeiji Satori thing, rather an issue that her entire species has had to deal with without ever finding a place to belong.
Tumblr media
Prior to Sub-Animism Satori was COMPLETELY cut off from interacting with anyone aside from her pets and Reimu/Marisa are the only visitors her palace has ever had.
Tumblr media
Her position comes from the fact that it isn't possible to rebel against her.
Tumblr media
Orin is the one that the vengeful spirits are controlled by

While speaking about Okuu, this is the description of Okuu on Satori's profile rather than Okuu's own profile, so I can only assume that this is part of Satori's own outlook towards Okuu. (For what it's worth my Satori loves Okuu too much to think such things)
For what it's worth though, the profile's are written in universe by some of the other characters. Notably Akyuu recording stuff from others, so perhaps it's more accurate to say that it fits how others perceive Satori's outlook towards Okuu, rather than being Satori's own outlook herself.
Tumblr media
Satori is a novelist. As I've noted before my headcanon is that most of the books she reads are mystery novels but I imagine her own writings are more psychological.
Tumblr media
I just love that she's a very high threat level and dangerous ... but doesn't leave her house so you won't actually encounter her.

Finally, this part is a note about Satori's many pets. What I find more interesting about it though is that that is how specifically Reimu perceives Satori's relationship with her pets. I dunno, just sorta gives insight to me on how Reimu may view relationships.
