Part of you hadn't expected Joel to come back. The snow melted away and the flowers had begun to bloom once more but he was still gone. And in this world, gone is as good as dead. So that's what you assumed.
While Tommy held out hope – talking about what he had to show Joel when he got back – you didn't even dare to speak his name. You couldn't fathom what had happened to him or the miracle girl he'd ridden into Jackson with. But you hoped it was quick. Though you knew full well that men like him rarely ever earned merciful endings.
You allowed yourself to wish for it, though only for a few seconds at a time. Then it was back to reality, going on patrols, lending a hand wherever it was needed, and keeping the community alive. Anything to get your mind off the fact that he probably wasn't coming back.
You hadn't known Ellie long during their initial visit. Even still, her personality wasn't one that could be swallowed lightly. She had been inquisitive, skeptical, and sarcastic; a bundle of anger and hope so bright that you could see why Joel was so drawn to her. It made complete sense that he would see her deliverance to the Fireflies through.
Which is why you were shocked when Joel Miller and the miracle girl waltzed right back through the gates of Jackson. But they were both different; both fragmented versions of the people who had passed through the prior winter.
For one, he smiled. When Joel first locked eyes with you upon their homecoming, he fucking smiled. It was this crooked, delicate thing that seemed to waver once it reached his eyes. And that's when you knew that something was wrong. He didn't even have to say it. The unspoken truth was solidified with Ellie's silence.
There would be no cure.
You'd shared a weary look with Tommy then. And he'd pursed his lips at you before returning Joel's smile; a quiet acknowledgement that you were both aware of the uncanniness in both Ellie and Joel's behavior. Then he led the two off, probably to get them something to eat and then to confer with Maria on where they could stay.
The two of them adjusted well to the community. You’d heard from others about how large of a help Joel had been on patrols. His experience in taking down infected was invaluable. Ellie, on the other hand, had thrown herself into helping with the animals. At first she struggled to adapt to the early morning schedule of the other handlers, but otherwise she took to the tasks quickly. She seemed the most at peace around them and you understood it.
Jackson was the closest thing to friendly that you’d encountered in years. But it still got a little suffocating at times.
Outside of the animals, Ellie was quiet; mostly keeping to herself with her nose buried in a notebook.
This was another one of those instances. You took a step back from your current task: repairing part of a fence that had been kicked in by one of the horses. As you wiped the sweat from your forehead, you couldn’t help but notice the girl sitting crossed legged atop a bale of hay a few feet from where you stood.
Making your way towards her, you saw she was drawing again. And as you peeked over her shoulder, you spotted a sketch of the horses as the riders were taking them back into their barn. In the half hour since they’d ridden past she’d managed to capture their swift movements in each rough figure. On the next page over you identified a portrait that was immediately familiar to you.
"Is that Joel?" you'd asked, gesturing to the open book in her lap.
She seemed startled from a daze upon hearing your voice. "Hm?"
"That drawing. It's Joel, right?"
"Oh, yeah," she answered. "I guess I'm getting better, huh? Since you can actually tell who it's supposed to be,” she huffed.
"With those eyebrows and that nose? Who else could it possibly be?"
Sure, he and Tommy shared some similarities. But Tommy’s wrinkles weren’t quite that deep. And though Joel had grown his hair out a bit more since coming to Jackson, it hadn’t quite reached his shoulders the way that Tommy’s did.
Right away, you were sure it was Joel. You could already envision the wrinkle between his thick brows that seemed to perpetually haunt his face. His lips were a thin line – almost pursed – and topped with a slightly overgrown mustache. Yet it wasn’t an angry expression. More…vulnerable, perhaps. As if Ellie had asked him to stand still for a minute before scribbling a rough outline of his features for reference.
"Well..." she trailed off. "The first few times I tried...he just looked like a constipated potato."
You snorted, which immediately made the girl start to smile, "It's true!"
Relieved to see her in such a good mood, you pushed a little further, "One day I'd like to see these angry potato drawings. Because I bet they're just as true to life as this one." You pointed towards her drawing.
Thankfully, she laughed. A few seconds passed and her voice went small, "Do you really think it looks good?" She stared up at you with those dark brown eyes, searching for your approval.
You nodded. "I wasn’t an art critic before the outbreak. But I am an expert on that man’s face. And I think it's pretty damn good. I’m sure you’ll only get better the more you practice.”
She murmurs her gratitude before falling back into a trance. Hair blowing gently in the wind around her face, you can’t help but notice the way that light gradually fades from her eyes.
“You alright?”
“Has he been acting…weird…to you?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you’ve known him longer than I have,” she sounds hesitant to admit. “You used to know him, I mean.”
You didn’t want to tell her the truth and further her worries. But something tells you that if you attempted to lie, she’d see right through it anyways. She’d find some way to get to the truth.
“He’s definitely been a little quiet lately. Just don’t know what for. Then again, he’s never been the type to share his feelings with anyone.”
“Not even with you?”
You snort, “Especially not me.” Remembering years of passive aggressive arguments and wordless apologies, it was unlikely that that part of him had changed much since those days.
“Could you at least try to figure out what’s up with him?” for a moment, you detect a palpable anxiety in her tone. But she brushes it away swiftly before adding, “At least so we can rule out the possibility of dementia. Or whatever the fuck else it is that old people get.”
You roll your eyes at the attempt of a joke. “You’ve got it. I’ll see what I can find out.”
Turns out that saying you’d talk to Joel was a lot easier than actually doing it.
But then again, it had once been like this. All those years ago when it was just you, him, Tess, his brother, and the rest of the group that was moving through to Boston. Back then you’d always been at least a little afraid of him. Not only was he physically imposing and regularly proved the violence that laid just below the surface of his fingertips, but there was also the way he’d look at you like with that fucking face.
Like he was playing out how he’d get rid of you the moment you fucked up. Like he knew just how soft you were inside; how it was a wonder you’d even lived long enough to be standing in front of him looking as dumbfounded as you did. It was an expression that made your skin burn and your hands shake, only you were too stubborn to outwardly show it bothered you.
Slowly but surely, he’d mellowed out then. Surely, it would happen again.
If he was going to make any actual friends in town, it’d have to happen. He was already popular in his own right. The people of Jackson always got curious when someone new settled. It certainly didn’t help that this new someone happened to be Tommy’s brother.
They seemed to believe that Joel would be just like his bright eyed, bushy tailed little brother. And boy, did you get a kick out of seeing them realize how wrong they were.
Joel was polite, of course. But he wasn’t quick to cozy up with every person who came to his doorstep offering a housewarming present. No matter how many times you or Tommy assured Joel that it was all just friendly, he was reluctant to accept it.
You understood it. You’d had nearly as difficult a time acclimating to Jackson’s genial climate. Places like these just…couldn’t exist. It all felt like a mirage that would melt away in time. However, you came to discover that despite the close quarters and the occasionally nosy neighbors, you liked the place. To explain it simply, you liked belonging to something. The world would never be the way it was before, for better and for worse. But right here…people weren’t just surviving. They would live.
And ever since he returned, you intended to show Joel just what that felt like.
The sun’s setting and the citizens of Jackson are already settling in for the evening, save for a handful of teenagers lingering in the streets. You pass by them, making your way towards the house at the end of the road. It’s a path you’ve become familiar with in the weeks since you started visiting Joel on an almost daily basis.
They aren’t always frivolous visits. Sometimes you help move furniture around. Sometimes you bring food when he’s been working all day. And sometimes on nights like tonight, if you manage to trade for a particularly good bottle of whiskey, you bring it straight to him to share.
It’s a good routine. One that makes you believe that you and him can bury the hatchet and start anew. If anything, it proves that though much time has passed since you and him had first met, you still know damn good and well how to push his buttons.
You knock on his door and are met with an obviously exhausted Joel. It’s hard to stop yourself from giving him a quick once over. When you do, you notice his hair has gotten the tiniest bit shaggier. Tufts of curls spill over his forehead and under his ears. He’d always cut it before it ever got the chance to grow like that.
The sight makes you smile. Joel Miller will never admit it, but living in Jackson is really starting to look good on him.
He rolls his eyes, “You again?”
“Oh, hush, you’re thrilled to see me,” you say before inviting yourself inside and heading straight towards his kitchen to deposit your alcoholic spoils.
“Thrilled is one hell of a descriptor.”
“Says the man who I’m sharing my liquor with.” You hold the bottle up before setting it down on his kitchen counter. “Besides, I’m just trying to get you a little out of your shell.”
Joel mumbles, “I’m doin’ alright on my own.”
“By fine you mean you’re fine trailing behind Tommy for the rest of your life? Because that’s the direction you’re headed in.”
He lets out an exasperated chuckle, “You know I made friends just fine before you came along, right?”
“Then you should have no problems with surprise visits from an old friend.” You intended to sound smug saying it. Instead it came off more longing than anything else.
Perhaps because you aren’t entirely sure what you and Joel even are anymore. A long time ago there was something more. But now? You look in his eyes and see apprehension brewing in them. He could go back and forth with you all day. Sincerity, on the other hand, was an entirely different matter.
Joel clears his throat before changing the subject. “You seen Ellie today? Tommy and I were up early for patrol this mornin’ so I didn’t get to check in with ‘er.”
“Oh, yeah, she was at the farm earlier. She’s been a real big help.”
“She doin’ alright?”
“Uh, she seems…nervous…to say the least.”
His brow furrows as his eyes meet yours. “Nervous? About what?”
You laugh awkwardly. “Are you even aware of all that she’s been through?”
“Is that supposed to be a joke?” The challenge in his voice is apparent.
“I just mean–” you stumble over your words before stopping to take a breath. You close your eyes and see Ellie’s face all over again; her features the embodiment of white noise. You’re swiftly moving into dangerous territory. But it still needs to be traversed. And there’s no going back after this.
“She’s been through a lot, Joel. One minute she’s being pushed around at some FEDRA boarding school. The next thing she knows she’s traveling across the country with the world on her shoulders. Now she’s here.” And there’s no cure, your mind whispers.
“Your point is…?”
You snap, “My point is that that’s a lot to fucking deal with, Joel.”
“She’s resilient,” he replies with an equal amount of grit.
“She’s a kid.”
He’s quiet. He can’t refute that.
“And she saved your life,” you add.
He scoffs, “More times than I can count.”
“Don’t you think that entitles her to a little better than what you’re giving? A little more support? She’s living in that garage all alone and she’s–” His expression remains steely. Almost out of desperation, you bridge the gap between your hand and his.
“Please, tell me what happened. Why are you—”
“Don’t,” his tone is jagged and low; the growl a wounded dog gives when you step towards it. That’s when it hits you. Something about this terrifies him. And the shreds of trust leftover between you and him are the only thing keeping him from showing his teeth.
It’s been a long time since you’ve seen him look that afraid. The closest memory you can grasp is one from nearly a decade before when you and Joel had strayed from the group to scavenge a nearby grocery store. You’d never been very good at checking your surroundings. You hardly saw the haggard man coming at you. But you saw the flash of his knife. Felt the blade slash the side of your arm as you struggled with him. Felt a store shelf jab you in the back.
It had taken seconds after hearing the sound of your scream pierce the air for Joel to fly over and bring the man to the ground. A guttural yell in his throat, his fist fell continually. Over and over and over until the man was audibly choking on his own blood. You heard a small, strangled please. Then there’s one final, wet thunk; the sound of his own blade being buried into his flesh.
You remember Joel’s shoulders sagging when you got back to camp with the others. His knuckles were bright red. You gently wrapped them with cloth as he squeezed your knee with his uninjured hand.
You were exhausted that night but sleep wouldn’t find you. Joel would though. Through the quiet you’d realize that Joel was the only person you trusted to do so.
He barely uttered a word for a day or so afterwards. Part of you had expected to hear him chastise you for paying such little attention; to tell you that you were lucky he’d saved your ass again. Strangely, those words never came.
The next night he stared intently at the gauze covering the cut on your arm. In the cold, dark, dead of night while everyone else slept, he was fixated on you. Something about that look of his scared you more than his judgment ever did.
The only words he ever spoke of the incident would come out of his mouth as the fire crackled and reflected in his dark eyes, “Don’t scare me like that ever again.” That was the moment you saw how much fear this world had instilled in him. Even more, you finally understood that his love language was violence.
That’s how you start to understand why he practically snarls at you now. But it doesn’t mean you agree with it.
“You have to tell me at some point or another,” you say slowly and carefully, trying to make it clear that you mean no harm to him. “At the very least, you have to tell her. She’ll never forgive you if you don’t.”
Joel sighs. You can tell that he knows this; knows it better than anyone else in the world. He’d probably run the notion over in his mind dozens of times at that point. “I will. Just…just not now. Just—”
Though his eyes will no longer meet yours, you hope that he’s telling the truth.
“Alright,” you reply softly.
Eyebrow raised and lips pursed, he looks skeptical. “Alright?”
“Yeah. You–” There’s so much more you wish you could say. But you doubt he’d really hear any of it. After all, he’s just as wounded and stubborn as you.  “I believe you.”
“Okay.”

Humans Never Return AU part 2:
-okay through discussion with @dinas-bracelet we’ve decided Norm “Icon” Spellman would go through the Olangi iknimaya process, because he is so canonically connected to that clan. It got me thinking a little bit about the clan absorption process and the culture mixing melting pot the Omaticaya/Scientists/Olangi conglomerate would become oh my god.
-The Olangi are nomads, they are Pa’li riders who traverse the plains and move from place to place. No doubt their experience in temporary shelters was invaluable in building the village the Omaticaya lived in before the move to the new Hometree.
-The adjustment for the survivors to becoming sedentary had to have been so hard, so I imagine they went on a lot of scouting trips with Jake’s taronyu to pick a new Hometree.
-I like to think they have a representative, like a guy who’s their guy who represents Olangi specific interests in the clan, because it’s a HUGE adjustment to go from nomads on the plains to the forest. I’m picturing some grizzled warrior who was very injured during the battle, but he lived and after he recovered he stalks around all grumpy but super helpful. I would imagine Jake consults that guy a lot; they become besties after so much time discussing what’s bet for the clans and how to merge properly. Also that is Norm’s soulmate. Norm stalks that man, following him around for info and advice, ESPECIALLY on how to raise all 1000 of his adopted children. He can’t run fast enough to get away from Norm, so he’s forced to help him. They’re coparenting a little.
-Oh this is my new headcanon, Tuk’s bestie Popiti is an Olangi kid. Love the idea of her being Norm’s kid, but that doesn’t make sense time-wise.
-Norm and Spider move with the Omaticaya to the new Hometree! Sorry I don’t make the rules! They have a smaller little scientist village there.
-Also the amount of political and cultural sharing trips they go on? Crazy. Norm and the former nomad Olangi are a dangerous combo. Norm “I Will never go back to my planet and stay on this one I can’t breathe on and raise alien children” Spellman is not satisfied with just Omaticaya culture and botany in a peaceful non war world. The Olangi who want to roam a little and Norm take hella fucking trips to other clans; they visit to learn and to study and to build relationships with other clans. Kiri, Spider, and Lo’ak love going on these trips.
-Jake’s got so fucking many evil plans going on. Last post I said he and Neteyam are trying to trick Lo’ak into helping with training the younger warriors and Jake’s ulterior motive is for them to share the burden when he ultimately passes. BUT he and Lo’ak are also trying to trick Neteyam into chilling the fuck out a little at the same time. How many other evil plans does Jake have going? Maybe one to set up Norm.
-Ever since Lo’ak, Kiri, and Neteyam got their ikran (this would be pre Eywa blessed Spider, I want him to be fully accepted and happy pre that) Spider has become an expert at taking care of them. He’s been there with them every step of the way, and their ikran like him and trust him almost as much as they do their own riders. Neytiri sees this as a way to talk to Spider, something that hasn’t happened since he got sick and their relationship changed. She asks Spider to care for her ikran for the day because she’s busy with something. Kid has never been more serious about anything in his entire fucking life. They begin to communicate like fully in ikran speak.
Neytiri: how was she today? (also meaning him)
Spider: she was good! She ate well, and Lo’ak and I gave her and a couple others teeth checks. (telling her he’s good and about his day.)
Neytiri: thank you. Does she need to go flying? (can I take you flying to thank you?)
-Spider makes her another beautiful bracelet to thank her for trusting him. It’s the colors of her ikran and he leaves it in a saddle pocket for her to find. Once she does she starts wearing it right away. He totally notices this time as well.
Don’t worry, the Metkayina political visit one and the locorro sprinkle ad ons of this au will be coming.

Buffeting Desires
Entering the captivating world of D/S is like stepping into a vast buffet of desires and experiences. However, much like a grand Las Vegas buffet, attempting to consume everything at once can lead to overwhelming consequences. To avoid being overwhelmed and potentially in an unsafe position, let’s chat about the importance of pace, avoiding rapid escalation, and understanding the phenomenon of sub and dom frenzy.
Picture a Las Vegas buffet, a lavish spread of diverse options, each tempting the senses. Now imagine trying to taste every dish in one sitting. The result? Overwhelming, discomfort, and the inability to truly savor the unique flavors of each offering. Similarly, entering the D/S lifestyle requires a thoughtful and gradual approach. Just as one would navigate a buffet, selecting experiences that align with personal tastes and pacing ensures a more satisfying and sustainable journey.
Another common pitfall in the D/S lifestyle is the rapid escalation of intensity. Couples often find themselves going from zero to a thousand on the intensity meter without allowing the necessary time for communication, consent, and mutual understanding. This haste can lead to misunderstandings, discomfort, and even harm. Much like savoring a buffet, savoring the nuanced aspects of dynamics requires a gradual progression, allowing individuals to acclimate and communicate effectively.
Sub and dom frenzy refers to the heightened state of excitement and enthusiasm that individuals may experience when first delving into the lifestyle. This frenzy can manifest as an eagerness to explore a multitude of experiences rapidly. While this enthusiasm is natural, it can lead to poor decision-making, emotional exhaustion, and potentially dangerous situations. Recognizing and addressing frenzy is crucial for maintaining a healthy and sustainable D/S exploration.
Ten Tips to Navigate Frenzy:
Self-Reflection: Take time to understand your desires, limits, and expectations before embarking on the D/S journey.
Communication: Establish open and honest communication with your partner(s) or playmate(s). Discuss desires, boundaries, and expectations regularly.
Gradual Exploration: Pace yourself in exploring new experiences. Allow time for reflection and communication after each encounter.
Education: Continuously educate yourself about D/S, consent, and safety. Knowledge is a powerful tool in maintaining a healthy and safer exploration.
Establish Safe Words: Have clear and mutually understood safe words to ensure effective communication during intense experiences.
Check-In Regularly: Schedule regular check-ins with your partner(s) to discuss the emotional and physical aspects of your journey.
Community Engagement: Connect with the D/S community for support, advice, and shared experiences. Learning from others can be invaluable.
Prioritize Aftercare: Recognize the importance of aftercare in D/S dynamics. Ensure partners feel supported and cared for after experiences.
Respect Boundaries: Be mindful of your own and others' boundaries. Respect is foundational in D/S.
Seek Experienced Guidance: If feeling overwhelmed, consider seeking guidance from a knowledgeable experienced, and trusted individual in the D/S community.
Much like the allure of a Las Vegas buffet, D/S offers a diverse array of experiences waiting to be savored. Moving too quickly, however, can lead to overwhelm and missed opportunities for genuine connection. By understanding the risks associated with intensity escalation and the phenomenon of sub and dom frenzy, individuals in the D/S community can embark on a journey that is not only exciting but also mindful, communicative, and, above all, safer.

Hi. How’s your day?
I just want to say I mostly agree with your post about AI writing. I am a student from science background but is enthusiastic about fictions. Also my native tongue is NOT English.
Because of my……rather unique background knowledge, I feel like I have a “weird” stand about AI writing. I feel like 99% people I know use AI writing tools wrong, either they don’t know how to structure their story, how to create conflicts, or how to communicate with AI writing tools.
In summary, they’re either bad at storytelling or bad at using AI tools.
In fact, I use AI writing tools just like your post suggested—I mainly tell them what sentences I would use to describe the scenery, and see if they have better wording than mine. Or I would ask them which adjectives to use here, as google translate is dumb. Or I would ask if a scene which is not from my own culture make sense, as I don’t want to bother any online folks on this matter.
Your post made me feel less guilty about using the tools. I am not sure whether or not it’s a good thing tbh but thank you. I wanted to have some research about this topic, but I got yelled by people’s angry anti-AI writing posts in my face on tumblr most of the time. Like—I get it, but I wonder am I the only one who has the similar idea on this topic? Then I found your post.
I feel like my main concern now is—by using those tools, am I making the “evil” in others’ eyes stronger? As there are news about AI writing tools using online fanfics to train their models, the tools themselves might be unethical.
Thank you again and hope you don’t mistake my message……I’m here to say “thank you” and try to have some conversations over AI writing.
Hello friend, I'm doing fine, thanks, even if quite busy with the end of the school year approaching. I hope you're doing fine too!
I completely understand your fears and your reserves, and I share them. I think that the issue at hand here has two faces we need to tackle. The first is the tool, i.e. artificial intelligence chat bots; the other issue, the really problematic issue, is the way these bots were trained.
My foray into chat gpt was as a teacher, not as a writer: I needed to assess the potentialities and the drawbacks of the tool, since I'm fairly sure I will soon have to account for it when preparing my courses and perhaps even to integrate it into my teaching routine.
I do think that the tool, if used properly, could be really useful for teaching and learning, and also for everyday life. It's like having a very calm, very proper, very family friendly protocol droid. You have to take everything it says with a grain of salt, but it can help you get what you need (i.e. starter bibliography on a topic you aren't familiar with). It can also be invaluable for the uses you described. AI isn't inherently evil, if (and this is a HUGE if) we regulate its uses in order to let it substitute human work only when that work force can be redirected towards more engaging and more useful tasks, and never as a substitute to human knowledge and creativity.
What is evil is the economic system we live in, and this brings us to the second issue. Chatgpt was trained on data provided for free on the web, data that were never meant for this. This in itself is unethical, and a gross misuse of the web. Honestly I don't care that my fics may have been scrapped, but I understand why people do, and anyway my own feelings on the subject are way beyond the point: this is another egregious example of corporations using people's time and engagement to scrap data and profit, and this is one of the evils of our time.
And yet we keep using evil tools all the time. I use whatsapp, and I still have a facebook profile, so I'm feeding data to meta. I am not vegan, and I know all the evils of intensive animal farming. I don't buy a lot of fast fashion, and yet all my clothes are made in developing countries, and I have no idea of the conditions of the workers there. Heck, the fridge I just bought because the old one broke down is produced by a company that used to produce in Italy but then delocalized to a developing country, firing hundreds of employees.
I couldn't have bought an ethical fridge: I don't even know if they exist, and even if they did, I couldn't afford them. I absolutely couldn't afford to only buy clothes made in Italy or Europe. I could go vegan, but honestly I don't really want to. I eat meat very rarely, I only eat local fish (by which I mean fished in Italy, I don't live on the sea) and I buy eggs from certified cage-free hens. I could get rid of whatsapp, but it would complicate my life to an extreme I am not willing to go to. I can't give up google suite because I use it for work.
One thing I don't do, for example, is order delivery food. That is a form of exploitation I choose not to partake in, because it's a choice I can make. Would I want to have pizza delivered to my house sometime? Yes, of course I would. Am I willing to put at risk the life of someone less privileged than me (delivery people here are mostly immigrants, often 40+ years old) to have my pizza delivered to me instead of getting off my ass and going to buy it myself to take away? No, like hell I am!
Why am I saying all this?
Because until I only buy handmade clothes and locally produced foods, only own ethically produced tech (HA!), never use products from meta or google again... Until then, who am I to lecture anyone on their use of chat gpt?
We live in an unethical world. This doesn't make us above reproach, but we have to choose our battles, and very few of us are really in a position to hate on others for the battles they choose - and those they don't.
If chat gpt helps you, get to know its pros and its cons: if using it doesn't bother you, use it! Chances are that the people that would get mad at you are probably using something unethical too - like driking milk, because the disboscation and pollution and soil consumption that are needed to produce our milk are far worse things than a bot scrapping the ao3.
I am sorry for the ramble, and I hope I didn't come across as patronizing: this wasn't really aimed at you, personally, it was more like a written train of thoughts, because honestly I asked myself the same questions you did when I started to think about if and how to incorporate these bots into my teaching routine, and this is the only answer I could find for myself.
[for the record, I won't use it for teaching, not yet: I want to get to know the tool and its training and all these issues way better before I decide to willingly expose my kids to it]

Okay I'm sorry I'm sorry but I want to talk abt ideas I have for an alternate EQG set up.
Twilight should follow Sunset through the portal methinks. Twilight has been shown to get ahead of herself sometimes so if she just ran through it is believable I think. The portal leads out to a town square, but it would be night time so you don't have to worry about witnesses. And with the time alone you can have a dedicated moment to her learning how to walk on two feet, showing how much of an adjustment it is.
Twilight might consider going back through the portal but between intriguge and a sense of urgency decides not to. She got business to do. Back in Equestria the other ponies hear the commotion and get up, but they don't know what is happening so they wouldn't be able to go in and follow Twilight immediately.
The ponies go to Celestia who upon hearing from different accounts puts together what has happened, explaining the events to the remaining ponies but maybe leaving out details. She declares it too dangerous for the other ponies to go, and like in the og they follow the princess' command. She says that Twilight will be fine and dismisses them.
For one reason or another, maybe a joke about not being included and arriving late, Spike manages to eavesdrop on Celestia lamenting about how the portal will close but that she doesn't want to risk anypony's wellbeing until it looks like it's getting dire. She goes off to tell the guards to heighten security, ensuring that nobody will have access to the portal anymore.
Spike is alarmed!! He knows it's against the wishes on the princess but he runs to the portal when nobody is looking, coming out on the other side as a dog. He looks around, expecting to see Twilight but she has disappeared. It's daytime and many people are walking around (they don't notice him because he's so small), and with the camera zooming out showing his size in comparison to the world around him, we see the daunting task ahead of him. But it all shows Spike's bravery and loyalty to Twilight that he would go this far to make sure she's safe <- I super love Spike's part in the original movie, he's really cool.
So where IS Twilight. Well, obviously, it's not very good that it was the middle of night and she was alone with nowhere to go. She walks around getting scared by every little detail of this new foreign world, you can even insert the iconic Twilight scream as she is very frightened. Maybe Pinkie Pie is involved in this scene to mirror Twilight first meeting Pinkie, except Pinkie scares the cutiemark off her flank and makes her run off.
Twilight is feeling super not cool until she runs into Applejack, making her perk up at the familiar face. Applejack asks her if she's okay and Twilight um. Doesn't know what to say. Applejack is shown to be an invaluable member of the community with her staying up late to do some work, as well as not being able to recognise Twilight. She asks if Twilight is from out of town and Twilight jumps on the excuse, "yep!! not from around here!! nuh uh, from faaar away". Again it calls back to the pony premiere.
Here the ponies are young adults because I say so. But Applejack asks if Twilight has someplace to stay. Nope! Really weird a tourist wouldn't have organised somewhere to sleep but Applejack is super nice and offers to let Twilight stay with her. Nice, Twilight has somewhere to sleep now. And it avoids the whole "how would a teacher not know about a new transfer student?" stuff. She's an adult, it's assumed that whatever she's doing is her business baby.
And so at some point the next day Twilight and Spike meet up again (it's a very heart warming scene), compare notes, and the high stakes are established what with the portal closing within whatever the agreed timeframe is. If Twilight can't get the crown she will either have to remain stranded here for the next however long, or she will return home empty hoofed which would mean Sunset would still have the element and could do bad things with it. Nice.
And that is an the set up I have thought of. The town is probably all drifted apart (boy howdy is that how it is irl) and Twilight along the way will be helping to build the community alongside Applejack. Didn't even think of this, but it's the perfect vehicle for Twilight to develop and prove herself as a good leader. Also, the rest of the Mane 6 have believably drifted apart with time. They used to be close like in the original movie, but when they graduated they just got so busy and stopped contacting each other. Oh and I think it'd be really cool if how they met continued to call on the premiere. It's not exactly the same, but similar enough it still gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. Can't wait until Pinkie meets Twilight again like "hey!!! you're that person i met the other day!!!!" "huh?" "yeah!!! it was like super late and i was out on a midnight walk and you were screaming and running around!!!!!" Like that would be funny I think.
Anyways, this is just one take. I'm sure there's many different ways this could go, and the original EQG isn't inherently a bad plot. This is just all my personal preference and what I think would be interesting. ^ ^

The Cornerstone of the UNIX Community
In the era of cloud computing and commercialized Internet services, it's easy to overlook the humble beginnings of the digital world. One such cornerstone is the pubnix systems, which have been integral to the UNIX community for decades. These systems offer a collaborative environment where users can learn, explore, and engage in a variety of computing activities. Despite the rapid advancements in technology, these systems continue to thrive and maintain their relevance in the 21st century.
What is PubNix? Our team refers to computer systems that provide a public, shared UNIX-like environment. Users can log in remotely via SSH (Secure Shell) and access a suite of UNIX tools and utilities. These platforms offer a collaborative experience and often provide forums, web hosting, email services, programming environments, and more.
Historical Importance Born out of the hacker culture of the '70s and '80s, PubNix systems were instrumental in the development and popularization of UNIX. They served as hubs for collaborative projects and forums where users could ask questions, share information, and learn from one another. Before the advent of modern social networking sites, discussion boards on PubNix systems were a significant source of information and social interaction.
The Educational Aspect PubNix systems have always been an excellent platform for education. Newcomers to UNIX and Linux can learn the ropes in an environment that closely resembles classic UNIX systems. Unlike commercial services, ours encourage users to delve into the underpinnings of the UNIX operating system, offering a learning experience that's as close to the metal as possible.
A Community of Enthusiasts Perhaps the most enduring aspect of PubNix is its community. Being a part of this system often means engaging with a group of like-minded individuals who are passionate about UNIX, programming, and technology. Whether you're a novice interested in learning the UNIX command line, or a seasoned system administrator looking for a community of experts, there's a system out there for you.
Modern Relevance Despite the tremendous strides in technology, it has found a way to stay relevant. Newer systems incorporate modern web technologies and cloud computing, but the core essence remains unchanged. Many systems today focus on privacy and security, offering an alternative to commercial platforms that often monetize user data.
Conclusion Our system is a testament to the enduring values of collaboration, learning, and community. They capture the essence of the UNIX philosophy: an environment where the power of the command line is coupled with a strong sense of community. While they may not have the flash and glamour of modern cloud platforms, PubNix systems offer something increasingly rare in today's digital landscape: a place where technology serves to unite people, fostering a collaborative and educational experience for all. Whether you're a UNIX aficionado or a newcomer looking to dive into the world of command-line computing, PubNix provides an invaluable resource and a welcoming community to be a part of.

Ubuntu as The Art of Cultivation: Nurturing Relationships and Personal Joy
In the hustle and struggle of modern life, slow down and savor the essence of our existence: cultivate! This thought encourages me to invest my time and energy into the things that truly matter, experiencing my life in ways that bring joy and meaningful connections. That must be why my mom named me Chumani. Let's delve into the essence of cultivation and how it can transform our relationships, our personal space, and our overall sense of happiness. Cultivating is not easy, as a matter of fact it is hard, it hurts and times. In the process you have to learn self actualization, to sit with oneself, the good and the bad, then to accept the facts, and work to do better. But the first step is to try not to get worse. In some aspects we are incapable of doing better, so there is value in starting with wanting to "not do worse or more". Sometimes the intention matters most, but I digress!
Blood is thicker than water: Families are Made, Not Born
Listen! The full saying is: "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." So this phrase actually conveys the opposite of the commonly shortened version "blood is thicker than water." The full saying suggests that the bonds formed through shared experiences and choices (the blood of the covenant/those who go bleed together) can be stronger than mere family (the WATER of the WOMB). In other words, it emphasizes the importance of chosen and cultivated relationships and connections over purely biological ones.
The tapestry of life is woven with threads of relationships. Like a skilled gardener tending to a cherished garden, we must nurture our relationships with care and intention. Families, in particular, are not merely a product of biology; they are crafted through shared experiences, laughter, and support. Every smile shared, every tear wiped away, contributes to the growth of these invaluable bonds. Cultivating relationships means being present, empathetic, and communicative. It's about creating a safe and nurturing environment where love and understanding can thrive.
Respect your own boundaries and those of others in order to Protect Your Space and Others'
I always took this for granted, the older I get the more I learn about boundaries. I would have obviously love to be efficient at it by now but I know the importance of unlearning. Just as a garden flourishes when the land is prepared and boundaries are respected—allowing each plant to grow without being overshadowed by another—so too do our lives prosper when we respect the personal space of others. Invading someone else's space can lead to discomfort and strained relationships. Instead, we should strive to build a culture of empathy, where we understand and honor the boundaries of those around us. By doing so, we create an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. But most of all mutual benefits like the 3 companion sisters planting method.
Nurture Your Inner Garden
Imagine your happiness as a delicate flower, ready to bloom if given the right care. Cultivating joy involves embracing the things that bring us happiness and fulfillment, while also being mindful of not trampling upon the joy of others. Just as a mindful gardener wouldn't tread upon their freshly sprouted plants, we should approach others' feelings with sensitivity and consideration. When we allow our own joy to flourish alongside that of others, we create a harmonious environment where everyone's happiness can thrive.
The art of cultivation invites us to invest in the aspects of life that truly matter. By nurturing relationships, understanding boundaries, and cultivating joy, we create a life that is not only fulfilling but also filled with meaningful connections. Just as a garden requires time, care, and attention to blossom, so too do our lives benefit from intentional cultivation. So, let us embrace this philosophy and watch as the tapestry of our existence blooms with vibrant colors of love, respect, and happiness.
Never forget that I'm just thinking out loud. Izwe lethu!

DA2: Marethari Talas
Marethari comes from the Talas family, which was founded by an Emerald Knight after the fall of the Dales. In the first Act, we meet her, letting us know several interesting things about her clan and their relationship with Flemeth / Asha'bellanar.
Tumblr media
She knew the amulet was going to be delivered, and [according to Merril's words] she brought the clan here just because of Hawke and this amulet.
She has a debt to Asha'bellanar. In the game it is never clear what Flemeth exactly did for her.
The amulet is more than magic, it's a promise. And promises [from Asha'bellanar / Mythal] have terrible power. I like to remember this because Mythal has a revenge aspect: if she promised revenge, we know we are going to see it.
The amulet requires a rite for the departed [Merril will state it's a sort of funeral rite]. This is really interesting because Merril, when she performs it, speaks of Uthenera. Does Uthenera require a piece of the elf contained, for safety reasons, while the whole body lies lifeless elsewhere? This is the true immortality that elves had? Spreading pieces to return later? [This scene links the concept of immortality with what archdemons do, with what Corypheus does, with Flemeth’s words of “a soul cannot be forced upon the unwilling”, and with how Grey Warden can destroy this process rejecting possession. Details in Corypheus post, eventually.]
Tumblr media
Keepers are guardians of the lost knowledge of the Dalish, yet, another thing that caught my attention after the end of the quest of Feynriel is that Marethari has no problem to give you a highly precious book of her clan to you, a shemlen. The book belonged to the last dreamer of her Clan, and it's implied it has knowledge related to dreamers [what Feynriel is and what has not been seen in quite a century so far]. Why does she get rid of this invaluable book with rare magic, so important for her people?
I thought that maybe, the canon path for Marethari is to exterminate her clan, so this attitude here would make a bit more of sense: she is giving the last treasure of her clan to you because she knows they are going to die anyway. Still, why would you give it to a shemlen instead of Merril? This is one of the many details that keeps me wondering how much of this was truly intended or it was just a mistake as a consequence of the rush in the development of this game.
I also find curious that she calls the demons as such, instead of spirits, as Merril does.
Tumblr media
In the second Act, when Merril speaks to Marethari, the Keeper explains that she has informed the clan that Merril's potential restoration of the mirror can bring back the corruption [or something worse] from the mirror.
Once more we see Marethari disregarding ancient Dalish artefacts and, instead of keeping the Arulin'holm, she prefers to give it to Hawke. I'm so surprised of this attitude: first, Marethari gives a book about dreamers to Hawke, now she offers Hawke the Arulin'holm, trusting them that they will return it to her later [and I'm not mentioning the fact that how this may be breaking rules and causing inner frictions in the clan: something so dear to the Dalish, that belongs to all of them, is borrowed to a shemlen.]
Tumblr media
Later we can ask for clarification about the line that Marethari said to Merril on how these mirrors belonged to another time and should be left there. We learn that, once more, Marethari is proposing to abandon ancient Dalish artefacts. It's true this mirror is dangerous to her, since it “killed” Tamlen and is corrupted, but apparently Marethari has a lot of carelessness for Dalish relics.
Tumblr media
Here is where Marethari communicates that she released the demon, allowing him to possess her.
Marethari informs that an Eluvian can be linked to the Fade, something that we saw in DAI happening: Kieran can go to the Fade via the mirror, implying that any mirror connects to the Fade if you are powerful enough to activate it. So, along DA2 we have seen that Marethari knows  a lot more how Dalish artefacts truly work than Merril. She knows more than your regular Dalish, is this related to her debt to Flemeth? I wonder.
Marethari explains that she could not fight this demon in the Fade, because it was trapped [in the strange idol], and could not banish it without making it stronger. So she made herself its prison. There is only one case in DA2 where we see a similar power, and it's related to Orsino's staff description: First Enchanter Casimira, the first enchanter in Kirkwall who helped to transform the Tevinter prison called Gallows into a Circle “tower”. She was taken by a demon and contained it inside her until the Templars killed her before she could endanger anyone. However, that tale shows a lot of struggle that we don't see with Marethari. Marethari has been possessed for a long time. Days, weeks, maybe even months?
It's hard to know when Marethari did it. But we could hypothesise that when Merril started to interact with the demon, she took this prevention measure. Now, does Marethari have this power?  To contain a demon alone in her own body and for so long? If she did it, it would make sense why she became so confident in giving Hawke items so dearly for the Dalish and why she seemed to act as if her clan would not matter anymore [because she was going to doom it sooner or later?].
This also make me wonder if the debt she had with Flemeth is related to this: to have the power to become the demon's prison without losing control for a decent amount of time. But this depends a lot on when she became its prison. We can assume that only when they moved to Sundermount Merril got in contact with the demon bonded to the Strange Idol, and only then Marethari turned into its prison later. The debt she has with Flemeth seems to be older than this.
Tumblr media
Effectively, when you read the World of Thedas 2, we have a glimpse of what this debt is about: To avenge her late husband at the hands of an avvar group that killed him. Considering what Flemeth did with Maric too when she met him, and considering how Marethari was grim after meeting the witch, I think we can asume that Flemeth also gave her glimpses of the future about the clan, the demon, and the possession of Merril, so we could suppose that Marethari acted all along DA2 knowing this thanks to Asha'bellanar.

Week 6: Digital Concept Drawings
To date doing the digital concept rendering has been the part I was both looking forward to and dreading the most. Before completing this weeks work I had never used photoshop, and avoided any and all Adobe products like the plague (I rendered everything for BENV1010 in Rhino last term, for which I make no apologies). Fortunately (?) for me there was simply no way to avoid it this week.
Tumblr media
The final product...
I found Rob's videos invaluable in creating my concept drawings, though there were quite a few points where I had to madly google things as A) I don't use a mac (therefore the shortcuts are different), and B) things did not always go to plan.
Tumblr media
To begin with I drew in a very rough copy of the 3 bottle concepts I wanted to take further. They were very rough, but it was good to get something on the screen quickly and messily so I had a starting point.
Tumblr media
Blocking in the base colours for the bottles seemed to go ok, and it helped me refine the profiles of the bottles. The symmetry tool was invaluable - I hated trying to free-hand draw symmetrical shapes last week so this was no small blessing.
My layers were a bit weird which caused headaches later on. If you look closely at images 2 onwards the block colour for the bottles either hasn't been erased properly, or I somehow managed to get 2 blocks with different shades of grey from each rectangle - I have no idea what went wrong, but I did it twice and the same thing happened again so I pushed on :(
Tumblr media
After I blocked in the colour I tried something different and created another layout layer so that I could (roughly) trace the grey masses and work out where the edges were. I then locked this layer so I couldn't alter it and put it over the masses so that I could put shade and highlight in the appropriate places. This made it much easier to do the shading as my bottles were not purely organic shapes like was demonstrated.
Tumblr media
After removing the rough layout layer I was left with some rather uninspiring blob-bottles. I had difficulty with getting the outline to generate on a different layer and it resulted in some weird artefacts that I couldn't figure out why they existed, but just had to manually erase from the new layer. Adding additional layers for the contours ad making it look a bit more hand-sketched and "open" as a concept took a lot of time but was well worth it. I think the shading could be matched up a little bit better, but overall I was happy how it cam out.
Tumblr media
Adding in the background really elevated the sketches and made them pop. I'm quite proud of how it turned out, though personally I think it is cleaner without the notes.

Lessons learnt: 1) Photoshop is scary, and has one hell of a learning curve, but it's so much better than trying to draw on paper, so I'll take it any day of the week.
2) Sketching skills are transferable from paper to the digital realm, so I need to continue practicing sketching if I want to be able to effectively communicate and ideate rapidly. CAD has it's place, but I have developed a new appreciation for the artistic side of IDES.
3) The order of your layer stack is important and I feel like I have only barely begun to get my head around it at this point - the layers are soo much more than just different line weights and colours as they are in AutoCAD and Rhino.
4) I'm so glad I had the sense to get a touchscreen laptop with a pen at the start of this year - I cannot for the life of me imagine how much longer this would have taken be if I only had a mouse - and I am certain wouldn't have come out as good.
