Do you also avoid actually talking to people who have commissions open? Like its so hard for me to even like their posts cuz I think the only way they're gonna act towards people they don't already know is the "please buy my skills" type of professionalism. Where like they don't care about actually having a conversation more than they want the other person to commission them/want to improve their public image so more people will repost their things or commission them (at least on the blog where they advertise comms).

Essentially, it's hard to NOT feel like people who take comms only interact with others for getting more money and want to know if you feel like that too, as someone with comms open.

I don't really consider if an artist has comms open when I interact with them. In my mind I just go "yay cool art" and it doesn't even register. Of course I wouldn't consider going to them and asking for like a drawing request if they had comms open cos if I wanted them to draw me something the obvious route is to pay them (tho tbh I dont ask for drawing requests anyway). But apart from that whether an artist has comms open never really crosses my mind when I interact. As well, from my end, of course I'd love to have someone commission me, and if posting more and interacting more gets me some then great! But that is nowhere near my primary incentive for posting art. Apart from reposting my comms sheet, and maybe mentioning it if someone asks for an art request, I don't think about my commissions being open all that often when posting on tumblr. When someone interracts with my posts I dont go "Oo boy another person to potentially commission me". I think "Oo boy someone likes my art!" I'm running basically off the same mindset that I had when I didn't have commissions open. I love any and all engagement and it makes me happy to see others enjoy my art. Maybe my opinions will change once I actually get a commission (cos so far no one has actually commissioned me lol) but I doubt it, because my primary goal has never been to make money, it's been to share my art and to enjoy myself. Most the artists I'm friends with don't think this way either (at least I'm pretty sure they don't, if any of y'all wanna chime in in reblogs that'd be cool (this offer goes to artists who aren't my friends too if y'all see this, I wanna hear what everyone has to say)) and I'm pretty sure most the artists I follow don't think this way as well. Engagement is cool but its not a means to an end At the end of the day though, I can't actually speak for other artists, because as much as I wish, I'm not psychic. I can however say when I see people interact with my posts, and when I interact with other's posts, I don't think about commissions at all, its purely just an expression of liking someone's work to me. This was interesting to think about though, thanks for the ask! And please don't feel scared to interact with any artists who have commissions open! They're most likely just cool people who will love and appreciate any interaction!

i hope this hasn't been asked before. what size do you make your canvas? and do you crop it to fit other socials (like Instagram for example)? i hear that 300 dpi is standard. i never know if it's good to make my canvas big or not.

hi i think this ask is like at least 4 months old but i was scanning my sketchbooks from last year and i abruptly remembered i had gotten this ask because i had made a little chart in my sketchbook trying to figure out how to answer it

anyways theres pros and cons. and the size of your canvas is really going to depend on personal needs + preference. how good ur computer is, how complicated ur art style, how comfortable drawing feels, how much disk space you have to spare, what youre gonna end up using the art for in the end...300dpi is standard for PRINTING specifically, if you only plan to ever post things online then 72dpi works great and will save you space (fun fact a lot of professional animation files i deal with are 72dpi. and those eventually go on your tv screen). but personally i make everything i draw 300dpi because i am always printing stuff for cons, zines, etc and its nice to have the option even if i dont end up printing.

when I was a teen I used to draw on a rly shitty laptop and i made everything 800x800px 300dpi because big canvases would cause a lot of lag and also the resolution on this laptop was pretty small so 800px was a lot of the screen already. now i have a slightly better laptop with a bigger resolution and i sketch on giant 10000px-40000px canvases with the hard round brush and no shape dynamics or transfer whatsoever to minimize lag. when it comes to making a final illustration when i know ill be using a bunch of layer effects/blending modes/colors/mixing brushes etc etc ill generally crop the canvas down to the 6000px range. most illustrations i try to make sure are comfortably printable on tabloid size paper so thats pretty much anything hovering around or above 3000x5000px w 300dpi (so 11x17in). HOPE THIS HELPS?

EDIT: OH ALSO re: socials. i always ALWAYS size down my art to post on the internet. i think its crazy when other artists dont. because why would i ever let the internet have my hi-res file for free. also in general i think it looks better if you do the resizing yourself because if you don't then many social media sites will compress your file for you! a lot of people will post a hi-res file to twitter and then go "Wow twitter killed the quality of this img!!!" UH YEAH because they have an automatic image compressor. because they need to save space too lol and they dont want your image to take 248263895 years to load. same with instagram and to a lesser extent tumblr. when i post anything on social media i resize it down to 1200px-1600px on the longest side... its a little arbitrary but im kind of basing it on the smallest resolution of widely available screens. mostly because i think it looks stupid when u open up an image file fullsize and u have to scroll to see the whole thing... also iirc instagram only takes images up to 1080px before it resizes them? granted if you upload something smaller than that itll also resize it up which will look worse so I think bumping the numbers just over 1080px is pretty safe.

I should really be bringing the dpi down to 72 too when i post online but often im too lazy to do that. but it will technically help ur image load faster and stuff. and make it less likely for people to yoink it off the web and print it themselves.

Part 3: The Beginning of the Never Ending Mouse Wheel

A/N: ahahahaha,,, im sorry? But at least im finally reaching the Sabzeru festival bit of this story, im sorry its been a while. The reader’s feeling about the arts is based on my own, because I’m an artist and anyone who demeans any form of art make me angry >:(. Let’s start ig (oh stars this is not gonna be good) Anyway’s send me asks if you want

You head hurts so bad, but at least you’re comfy (small victories).

You open your eyes to see… your bedroom? Oh, yeah, you’re in a pseudo dream so not really, you guess.

‘Wait if im in a dream why the hell do I have a headache?’ You ponder to yourself while siting up from your bed, your body missing the familiar coziness and warmth,

You look around in hopes to see the lil green girl, Nahida she said? You’re not a hundred percent sure, considering how… hazy everything felt in the moment, including the time passage. ‘How long have I been out?’ You wonder, knowing you’ll gain no answers without Nahida. You decide to wander around your room, seeing what you could do here. You walk towards the window, which shows the outside with the bird feeder you had been meaning to refill before being sucked into a nightmare that has been this experience thus far. Grabbing the ledge on the window, you try and open it out of pure curiosity, it takes a struggle you know it didn’t need before only to see..

Black. Everywhere.

You try the door to see if it’s the same situation (it was). Just a never ending darkness stretching on seemingly forever. Deciding that most of the items in your room was useless for really anything in the moment, you walk towards your desk that housed your device for playing Genshin. The wretched thing that condemned you to a nightmare, but you knew it really couldn’t do anything to worsen your situation (God you hoped not). Booting it up just showed your lock screen, so far so good, putting in the password bring you to…

Huh?

Genshin??

You sit there for a solid 5 minutes wondering ‘What the actual hell???’, because thats crazy, somehow more crazy then being stuck in the damn game itself. You snap out of your stupor and decide to click on the screen (which is no longer welcoming you by your email, but your ingame name. Your somewhat glad it wasn’t using your real name) waiting for the loading sequence, but it just skips to opening the giant door. You wait with just a white screen, no elemental symbols in sight. When it finishes you’re not greated by any playable character’s back, but by a spirit??

What?

It looked like you in a sense, it was transparent with a simple robe. You took a look at the icons that the normal attack, elemental skill, and burst was usually located, only to see a button that looked like it was punching (?), one that was touching, and the final one looked like it was… well you couldn’t really tell what it was supposed to be. But you decided against trying any of them out of fear of what might occur. Looking around you realized ‘you’ were right in the middle of Sumeru City, right next to the adventurer’s guild. Walking around was a bit odd, you were very used to hearing the character’s footsteps and clothes moving but this spirit had no noise at all.

You end up at the front of “The Grand Bazaar”, an area you had been meaning to visit before falling into a coma-state. Opening the door and walking down the small hallway led to somewhere that was bustling with festivities! It was so pretty with all the flowers and decorations, you wonder what the occasion is as you continue onwards. Looking at some of the food stalls you really regret not going there, it just looks so good (you bet it smelt delicious). Not paying attention you end up walking the spirit right though someone,

“Brr! Woah, did you just feel that?”

“No?”

“It was a really cold draft, how did you not feel that?”

“There’s no draft in here.”

You just stop to listen,

‘So this character is functionally a ghost? Huh’ You continue through the Grand Bazaar to another entrance, hearing a… familiar voice, one you haven’t heard in forever. Walking through the doors you see,

Lumine and Paimon.

They were talking with a strange looking man with 5 containers in front of him. But all you could think was how were they here. You remembered you left your team in Inazuma before getting sucked in because you set commissions there (you were grinding achievements), in all honesty you wonder where your team is at the moment… you hope they’re okay and don’t hate you. You walk up to the two, deciding to follow them for now, to follow a story you never got to see before getting sucked into this.

“—speaking of tradition, do you want some Yalda Candies? They're a festival staple, and I happen to have some boxes readied here. Take a look and pick whichever one you want.” The odd looking man with a mustache and flower hat offers Lumine and Paimon the mentioned candies

“Whichever one... Don't these boxes all look the same?” Paimon asks with her not at all annoying voice (you’re being totally honest!)

You muse while peering down at the containers with your character, “Yeah, they sorta do. But they do have some different colors!” You speak to yourself in the dream-room, simply speaking aloud.

“?!” Lumine suddenly started to look around them, seemingly startled

‘Wonder what Lumine’s spooked about?? Nothing seems out of place or weird…’

“Haha, this is the fun part. Each box contains a random flavor — it's up to the luck of the draw. Flavors include Lavender Melon, Harra Fruit, Sunsettia...” The flower man continues to talk, seemingly unaware of Lumine’s confusion.

Paimon, the flower man, and a regal looking lady kept talking to each other, but at this point I was focused on Lumine. ‘Maybe she can hear me with this character?’ You move the character to be closer to Lumine, “if you can hear me Lumine, uhm… Pick the 2nd container!”

Lumine immediately pointed to the 2nd container “I pick this one.”. Her sudden interruption made the three others pause.

Flower man cleared his throa, “uhm, A-atten-tion! That's unfortunately Harra Fruit. The Sunsettia candy was in the 4th one”

“Aw man! I thought you only won battles because you had good luck but i guess not” Paimon interjected

“That still sounds good! I’d assume Harra fruit tastes like dragonfruit so that seems like it’d be a good treat!” You say out-loud, then turn your voice to Lumine, “Thanks Lumine, ignore Paimon ahaha. I’m sorry I left you in Inazuma…”

Lumine seems to blush then nod to the direction of where my character was.

You follow the three throughout the day, and we finally arrive to watch the dancer Nilou’s performance. You were pretty excited, never have really seen a dance performance. While you couldn’t see it with your own two eyes in person, at least you could get as close as you could. But it seemed like there was someone yelling at Nilou.

The regal lady (that you learned her name was Dunyarzad) chimed in “I think I just saw the Akademiya's Grand Sage... Why is he here in person?”

The two Akademiya officials kept yelling at Nilou, while Dunyarzad looked like she wanted to step in and stop it. “Lumine, please stop Dunyarzad I don’t thing things will go well if she tried to intervene.” You whisper into Lumine’s ear, having become a bit worried for Dunyarzad since you discovered what she was dealing with.

Lumine listens and convinces Dunyarzad not to confront the Akademiya people. You get closer as a group to hear a bit better, and as you listen to what the Akademiya officials are toting about, it makes your blood boil.

You valued the arts before all this, buying several commissioned pieces, listening to music at any given point, and seen a musical or two. Hearing the Sages (?) demean those arts makes you want to punch them. “Not everything is about knowledge you old idiots! Art is human nature just let her dance, and besides the arts can be used to understand the past, and find more knowledge you fuckers. Be lucky I can’t physically punch you.”

You rant to yourself (maybe a lil to Lumine too, considering she can hear you) angry at what they’re saying. You move your character over to the Sage’s and spam the punch button (it satisfied you to know it was in-fact a punch button and watching the character’s transparent fists phased through the Sages made you deeply happy). While you’re enjoying your non-consequential vengeance, they leave (muttering how cold the Bazaar is) and Paimon and Dunyarzad starts to comfort Nilou while Lumine and you stay back.

Lumine and Paimon return to where they’re staying, you follow. They lay down for sleep and suddenly-

BEEP

The loudest noise you’ve ever heard in your life rings throughout the dream-room, your head feels like it’s about to explode. “FUCK!” Your hands try and block the noise from your ear but it’s too late and you faint from the pain.

You head hurts so bad.

When it finishes loading, you see the spirit character you remember, with the three buttons, punch, touch, and mystery. You make the character run around, hoping you’ll find Lumine and Paimon. You got lost so many times unfamiliar with the layout of the city, eventually you end up back at the candy stand you first saw Lumine and Paimon. The flower man (you really need to find out his name..) was still there with the candy containers. ‘Wait, shouldn’t he not be here since the Festival was cancelled?’ You wonder to yourself, not realizing that Lumine and Paimon started to walk up.

“Farris, the Knight of Flowers, is another Sabzeruz Festival icon, and one immensely popular with children.” After hearing the newly familiar voice Dunyarzad, you turn the character’s camera behind you to reveal the 3 approaching.

“Haha, it's all thanks to Miss Dunyarzad's sponsorship that the children can meet the Knight of Flowers.” Farris (that doesn’t seem right…) replies, “Oh, do you want some Yalda Candies? I happen to have some boxes readied here. Take a look and pick whichever one you want.”

Your eyes widen, ‘Wait, i remember this! The fourth one has the sunsettia candy, but why is this happening again?’

“Uhh, what's to pick? Don't these boxes all look the same?” Paimon says the same thing she said the first time

You move your character behind Lumine, and your finger hovers over the touch button. You click on it, your character’s hand laches onto her shoulder. “Pick the 4th one Lumine.”

“Ah, excellently chosen! Number four is indeed Sunsettia.” Farris congratulates Lumine on picking the right one.

You follow Lumine and Paimon throughout the day (again?) until you reach the Bazaar again, Nilou’s performance supposed to be underway. But the Sage’s are there and yelling at Nilou, Dunyarzad wants to stop them but Lumine stops her. The Sage’s demean the arts, you ghost punch the sages, and Dunyarzad comforts Nilou.

Lumine and Paimon return to the hotel, they get ready for sleep.

BEEP

“SHIT NOT AGAIN” You scream, again, it still fucking hurt but you don’t faint this time. Your device crashed and everything around you became blurry and glitched and you felt sick. You closed your eyes for just a second, and when you opened them again, you were in bed.

‘Am I in a timeloop?’ You walk to the desk with your device, again. With the idea of a timeloop troubling you.

Genshin boots up.

Loads in as the spirit character.

Punch, touch, mystery.

Flower Knight and candy containers.

“Container 4.”

Sage’s yelling.

Thoughts on fakes being more real than the real thing?

okay i finally am on my lunch break and have time to talk about this. sorry i did not mean to have audrey make you send me this ask but i do appreciate you doing so!

anyway just so that everyone reading is clear on this, the concept im discussing here is specifically a fake that is indistinguishable from the real thing. this isnt really a concept that can be applied to a physical thing, like if i made a fake rock that was chemically identical to a real rock, ive created a real rock. its more about intangible concepts.

when i was first introduced to this philosophical discussion, i was deeply, deeply religious, and i (perhaps unexpectedly) fell firmly into the 'the fake is worth more than the real' to explain the concept of original sin and christianity's belief that humans are inherently evil. the idea is that, if you have one person who is naturally good, and another person who is naturally evil but through concentrated effort becomes indistinguishable from a Good Person, the bad person is better because of their choice to be good despite their nature, whereas the good person simply does it without effort. i was always a very philosophical bitch, much to the chagrin of religious people in authority over me. needless to say i am no longer religious.

now, in my wisened age. i have taken a more reasonable stance. i do not believe there is any meaningful difference between a fake thing and a real thing. and theres a lot of things i apply this to! perhaps due to religious trauma, i still see myself as a fundamentally bad person. its hard to think of myself as good when im privy to my own thoughts, where im cruel and judgmental and lacking empathy. im sure others have similar thoughts, but i cant know anyone else's thoughts, so that doesnt do me any good. but if i treat people well and keep my darker side to myself, i am indiscernible from a good person. similarly, thanks to my upbringing im not really capable of accepting that things like positive reinforcement could actually work, or that there's a political system better than handing me personally unlimited power to kill politicians and rich people until better people are put in power, or the current ones stop doing evil shit out of terror. but regardless of how i feel about it, regardless of my severe misanthropy, i fake believing in positive reinforcement and less tyrannical forms of government. i support the things i know are good for people, even if i dont personally believe they are. and my outward support is the only thing that is really relevant, because most people arent reading my blog. the fact that its completely fake doesnt mean its worse.

and yknow, believing in this sort of thing is also good in that it kind of makes you immune to impostor syndrome. like oh, youre not a REAL artist because REAL artists like, idk, go to art school or whatever? well thats fine because being a fake artist is not really any different from being a real one! i bet even if you DONT believe this, and you're one of those people who believes theres some intrinsic value in the "real", you could pretty easily get away with faking it! and by faking a belief that theres no difference between the fake and the real, you can eventually come to believe it for real! or not. but it'll sure look like it!

do you have any advice for making fancherubs😨😨😨i must consult the cherub master…..

cherub master..?! well, i dont know about that.. i think i can name a few people that are better fitted cherub masters.. but, um..

i dont really follow a general rule of making characters, especially for cherubs (i do for trolls most of the time, but those are just super nitpicks, being an mspa art enthusiast and all), and im also really bad at giving advice, but sure i can try to give some tips.

one that i think is somewhat crucial is defining the dualities and personalities of your cherubs. its not really big design-wise, but knowing how each personality is like can help on that, along just being nice to see what contrasts well or not. calliope and caliborn i see as the de-facto cherubs, one being morally good and the other morally bad and stuff, i think they had a bit more going on but it isnt worthy going into details, but you can do the duality about anything almost, as long as it fits (though its still good to stick to that main principle of good/bad, its a pretty good base). my big main ocs, calabraz and callunia, follow the duality of one being about truths and obsession, while the other is about lies and compulsion.

another one can be about their enviroment and living situations. this one ties a lot more to design when really envisioning it, because it directly affects how much pizazz you can really put into the clothing (or not, if you just dont really care). like, caliborn and callipe had nice clothes and all because they lived in a meteor station, with outside influenc from gamzee nonetheless. if your cherub doesnt have as many resources as that, which it will probably not have seeing that most cherubs are born on dead or dying planets, it will probably have a hard time getting to that same degree of fancyness ! but that still should not stop you from giving it your all on the design. be it robes, tribal wear, space suits, you name it, really try your best to make it stand out and unique to the cherub. bonus points if the outfits can change between personalities, like one part using an extra, removeable piece that the other doesnt, or even some mystical aspects like color changing jujus and the like. go wild, but mindful.

now for actual physical properties of cherubs? i dont really know what to say. if you feel like going for a standard cherub with not much going on, go ahead and just follow the same principles as the cherubs in homestuck, be it caliborn and calliope, lord english, or even their parents (you can study a lot about how cherubs look from that ! just following patterns you see in their scenes on how theyre drawn and other tidbits is really useful). BUT ! i think that you can also just go absolutely insane with the designs, thats something i really want to see a lot in more cherub ocs. different skull shapes, extra limbs, unusual appendages and forms, even different types of skeletal animals, that stuff is always good. just experiment! see what fits and doesnt. id just say to try and still make it "cherub-y", if that makes sense. get their feel first.

if you want any resources on cherub stuff, i do have a google doc and fan cherub subtypes that are totally free to look at and use for things.

id also suggest looking at other artists that do it well ! not evne on the fancherub department but just cherubs in general. my main inspo for a lot of years were sketchoodles, lystheni, imac and quite a few others (and they still are ! really good artists that are worthy checking out). but keeping in mind to not just outright steal from them. referencing in moderation is key, always.

and thats it ! at least what i can type out. i hope this isnt too much, or too nonsensical even, i feel like other people can give better advice on this probably. but its what i can do ! so i hope it helps <:)

I like your Karna and Arjuna comics a lot! They’re very funny, and I like your art a lot. I did notice your tags about Karna’s skin color though — they didn’t really take Karna’s melanin away in Fate’s depiction of him. In all the all the Mahabharata art I’ve seen (which, to be fair, isn’t everything) Karna is the palest guy in the room, to signify that his face ‘shines like the sun’, which is how he’s often described in the Mahabarata. Fate’s pretty awful about whitewashing, but Karna is the one case where it’s in-line with most depictions of him, and there’s actually a textual reason for his appearance.

I’m sorry if this was annoying at all! It’s just a bit of trivia I enjoy, and while the accusations of white-washing are understandable considering the source material (where it’s usually just true, lol) it’s always a bit sad to me when Pako gets accused of that for a choice that was pretty well researched.

I havent read the mahabarata yet, (planning to, but i have very little free time now) so i really do admit my ignorance regarding descriptions in the original text.

As far as im aware, pako wasn't the one 100% responsible for karna, since he was originally created by kinoko nasu for a previous game entry so its possible there were pointers regarding the final design, so I'm not placing all the blame on pako here, (specially considering his design entries are still on the tasteful side and well researched compared to others ive seen in fgo that felt like looking at a hate crime) and overall im not sure about the company's policy on artistic freedom when it comes to the final designs.

Its not really in my place to say it or not since I'm not indian so maybe im completely off, but his design looks more like a rpg fantasy character than something reminescent of the source material/time period he was from, but the same could be said about characters like gilgamesh and some others i guess. I understand a lot of cuts are made in favor of making characters more appealing and marketable to your audience, but karna being albino white + showing no ethnic/cultural features in his design is mainly what bugs me i guess.

Either way i don't dislike karna's design per se, firsr because it looks VERY similar to a character i love from an old game (second because its about time we get a male character wearing some stupid golden underwear armor and spandex, we believe in equality here), but because he just sticks out like a sore thumb compared to his canon legend imo, and feels like just another white/light skinned addition to the indian servant roster and idk, i feel like its just a recurring problem. I guess i wouldnt really have an issue about his skin tone if the game wasn't already so full to the brim with whitewashed characters, so it ends up smelling fishy to me.

(Also couldn't his skin shine like the sun if it was tan? Not a jab at what youve said, this is just a personal addition, but pale white skin wouldn't be the immediate connection id make from that sentence alone, but thats just me. In my mind at least i picture a skin tone like duryodhana's.)

I feel like thomas is undermining how much people like the sides. I mean I understand he can’t be constantly making content but he finished filming and editing for the incorrect quotes video in less than two weeks it seems, so he could at least bring more short content with the sides like this. Also the incorrect quotes video is (as of sending this ask) sitting at 56k views, in ONE DAY, while videos that he posted recently without the sides are barely above that and posted weeks before. We like the sides so much that we beat the view count of his last two videos in 14 hours. He should at least do more content with the sides because that’s what we’re waiting for and it’s showing.

okay okay i cant say i disagree that people want sanders sides and also i am people. i want sanders sides. and im happy that so many agree and i do hope that this encourages thomas to make more sanders sides content soon.

however using this as an argument “people want this content, therefore you should make it”.. idk i have doubts on its solidity.

thomas should make sanders sides content because that’s what he has been promising over and over, and because it’s the theme of his patreon, so the promises are in exchange for money. which makes it more important that he keeps them.

otherwise he doesn’t have any other reason to make sanders sides but the fact that he wants to. his sanders sides videos having the most views on his channel shouldn’t be a shackle forcing him to comply. i think. im not totally sure but that’s how i see it. like. i just imagine being a artist and making different things and like maybe thirst traps is what gets me the most views, that doesn’t mean that my followers are entitled to that kind of content constantly, you know? i wouldn’t want that. unless i had settled some mutual agreement with them that they pay me in exchange for that content. which changes things. and which i think is what the patreon is*. so. again. thats imo the real reason thomas owes his fans sanders sides content.

*i know the description of the different patreon tiers doesn’t literally say “pay me and you’ll get more sanders sides on my channel!” but come on. he says at the end of the videos that if we want more content like that we can support him through patreon and the patreon is sanders sides themed. i think the idea is pretty clear. people are paying him to make more sanders sides and the rewards are just bonuses. right?

i need to get this off my chest its been in me for too long

i think deco 27 songs ever since vampire and onwards don't really hit at all excluding salamander, deco really peaked there it was a very nice song

i just finished listening to his latest song, rabbit hole and compared to zombies or journey it's definitely better but it feels kinda idk maybe im just missing his less upbeat style (that's definitely the case) because all these songs feel lukewarm to me at best and i feel like the lukewarm thing can apply to many more

i also think when voca-p's make songs for the sake of prsk it never goes right because they release it in vocaloid with human singing in mind and i was never really a fan of the prsk covers, im sure there are some good ones but so far overall its a very hit or miss thing with most going miss

because i think in most cases vocaloid songs are sang through vocaloid for a reason and it has to be made with vocaloid in mind and majority songs made for prsk felt mid (cosmospice didn't do anything for me despite my overflowing love for Pinocchio-p)

i know im sounding like a huge pissed off vocaloid "i think im better than you prsk lovers, i play project diva im a real one" person but dont get me wrong i love how vocaloid is getting a revival through prsk and the new genre/style of vocaloid is booming and i have a profound respect for people who play prsk and are good at it, i can clear up til 9.5 ex/exex songs on project diva all i want but i somehow cant do shit on proseka and watching gameplay is always amazing

i do admit they bang and i like the people who are discovering or even rediscovering vocaloid due to the resurge and i do admit some human covers of vocaloid originals do them justice (ahem miyuu ahem) this is just a very in general observation

im pretty much navigating through multiple topics but another thing im gonna add is nowadays i personally dont see heavy story telling based songs a lot i might be shit at finding them so if anyone sees this and think i am so wrong please prove me wrong with those sweet sweet YouTube/nico nico links but anyways things like the evillious chronicles hell not even that much even things like what hitoshizuku x yama does or the shama series

i also kinda miss how the artists draw the vocaloids themselves for the characters in the story or songs just outright about vocaloids interacting with other vocaloids like a little slice of life but i dont really want to complain too much because seeing individual and iconic designs for songs is also nice

i think thats all, my head stores a lot of thoughts towards vocaloid wait til you see me talking about MEIKO and her tuning and how i grieve for her everyday because I've found so many songs that sound nice but the way people tune her breaks the song but in the cases where she it tuned skilfully i drop down to my knees in amazement and i will stop there because i know i might spiral into this whole separate thing

so yeah i might be a hater at times,i can spend a whole 24 hours shittalking corn (I'll get on that some day) but you know what I'm not a hater of?

our kids are growing up and entering a new year in high school, which means that they now have completely new designs because thats how idol gacha rhythm games work!!! woo!! and i have Thoughts

im gonna talk about my opinions on all the redesigns from least to most favorite. note that these are not my rankings of the groups themselves lol, thatd be

#5 - MORE MORE JUMP!

ohhh my sweet girls, my precious girls, what did they Do to you.

the blue looks So bad on them. it clashes with minori and airi and feels too samey with shizu and haru. i like their shoes, tho, and i like how airi keeps her trend of her outfit straying just a little bit from the norm.

these outfits just feel so boring and lifeless, compared to their og ones that had a lot more personality and a lot more charm. i dont think the dresses themselves are ugly, in fact i find them quite pretty, but i dont think they suit the girls very well.

also what the fuck is miku wearing lmao (i like her hairstyle tho)

i like all the girls hair accessories tho they’re cute

i hate ranking them last because i love mmj so much but yeah im very disappointed and i honestly prefer their canon outfits that they wear while performing not in the sekai (the ones that their fans helped design in the metamo re:born event that i forgot the name of)

firstly i wanna say im so happy that honami gets to be pictured with her instrument like the others, and i really like how they positioned saki’s keyboard

i dont hate these designs!! i quite like them actually. they seem more unified and professional, which fits because leo/need is SIGNED with an AGENCY now oh yeah im so proud of them

im sad that ichikas wearing her tie now rip ichikas tie around her wrist you will be missed by me and me only

i really like their new outfits!! the girls look and feel older. im not really vibing with the shade of gray used tho, i wish their uniforms were black or white or a different shade of gray. i also love the pins and buttons on mikus jacket (i actually prefer the shade of gray on the jacket why couldnt the leoneeders be dressed in that shade)

i really love wondershos new look, i just like the other two groups better. nene’s in particular is my favorite (but im biased). i love how professional they look, these new outfits really display this new step that the kids are taking into the world of theatre

i adore all of these designs they’re so cute and fun and i really love the new vibe for wondersho as of recently. it seems like colorpale and the fandom are taking them so much more seriously

guys. guys the - the symbolism. their dresses progress from pure black to gray showing how they’re slowly healing and bettering themselves and miku’s hair is begining to regain its green and the kids have different flowers that have symbolism that other people know way bettee then mine but MAFUYU’S IVY MOTIF AND ENAS NARCISSUS MOTIF ARE BACK BABY real missed chance to give kanade carnations tho. i dont have much to say but WOW i love the new look for the nightcords and i think they’re stunning. will accept zero hate for these guys they look great

but these designs??? i really like them. a lot. it feels like the kids are really coming into their own, with kohane and toya finding their personal styles, akito refining his, and an paying homage to nagi in hers. they’re becoming the young adult creators and musicians that they’re striving to be. i can really see vbs’s growth in their new designs, and i hope that i can grow to really love them and their story : D

oh good i get to talk about my son!!

my blorbo my beloved my babygirl he means everything to me

i made him in 2017 so hes sort of grown up with me (or i've grown up and realised things about him that i couldn't have when i was younger. i have so many complicated feelings abt this that i made a short comic about it last year)

to preface this im not a great writer dont expect good writing from me lol all i have is my personal experience and stealing tropes from stories i like

(got a lot to say so its all going under the cut. also a lot of death mention)

So. who is this dude

Tsuru (not his real name in-story, i havent come up with one im happy with), 18 years old, a ghost

he has a little sister, Ori, 15, who was meant to be my sona but then i just drew him more and like drawing him more anyway

first 2 drawings i ever did of him. he was based off natori natsume yuujinchou at this point, i dont remember why or if i even liked natori that much, but i remember distinctly hes based off him

u may have noticed he sort of looks older in my older art. this is because first of all art style drift lol but also as ive gotten older ive figured out that 18 isnt actually that old.

theres also a black haired version of him (two actually) its basically something like this ⬇️

important to know that everything about this dude is a convoluted metaphor

i lovingly summarize white tsuru as "people pleaser" and black tsuru as "nihilist prick" in my head and those are the things consistent throughout all the AU versions of him

(important differences only to me) alive tsuru doesnt act like black tsuru at all thats just his warped self perception (he also doesnt act exactly like white tsuru either)

also alive tsuru has black eyes and the shortest hair, black tsuru has blue eyes and slightly longer hair (also white tsuru is slightly taller than both of them)

if they all existed at the same time they would hate each other on sight but fortunately (unfortunately?) he is just 1 dude with issues

the general vibe is white tsuru is the "yippee floaty trickster" brand of ghost and black tsuru is the sort of ghost in horror media that stands just outside your field of view in the darkness dripping with blood

for the longest time only white haired tsuru was a "character", "black haired tsuru" existed just as his corpse at most, a footnote

but over the past 2 years ive figured that hes actually really fun to draw and play with, and in a different way than white tsuru

(wait fuck isnt this just abe trio. i do always almost accidentally draw tsuru when im trying to draw haruaki.... fuck.....)

(ive had tsuru for long enough that i just keep tacking details from my fav characters onto him.....)

halls smp

so ive been on this minecraft roleplay server called halls smp with other artists for the past 2 years, theres a new season of it every few months with a different theme each time to keep things fresh and ive just been making AU versions of tsuru for it so ive had a lot of opportunity to think about him

season 1 - halloween - jiangshi tsuru

this one is almost entirely unchanged from his base characterization because i didnt want to rp too much and also didnt know there would be future seasons at this point (also basically after the first day i gave up on being called "tsuru" bc its too hard to pronounce and everyone called me canada anyway)

same basic story, guy dies and theres now a white haired version of him (actually this is the same for all the AUs). in fact im pretty sure the black haired version of this one is exactly base alivetsuru. basically what ive been interested in exploring is different kinds of death, the events leading up to it, and what kind of person he becomes afterwards (but also in equal amounts im interested in making fun designs and playing minecraft and fucking around)

(this feels like the start of the beginners guide...)

i associate him with doves and at the time, tarot card 18: the moon, but in retrospect i now think he's card 0: the fool.

season 2 - winter - ishmael

guy who died at sea and eaten by a interdimensional whale and got isekaied. loosely conceptually based off moby dick, although i havent actually read it LOL but i did spend a week reading up on drowning and hypothermia

strangely, his death didnt create a white haired version of him, perhaps because he didnt have anything in life to give up his identity and replace it with. (and also remember the hair color doesnt actually mean dead/alive)

im only calling him ishmael now in retrospect, at the time he was just tsuru/canada

while designing him i had the biggest crisis bc i didnt want him to look to much like this old old oc i had (pic 1) but then i sucked it up and went with it anyway

i never got around to drawing it but his fingers are black from frostbite thats why he wears gloves all the time.

hes one of my favorite iterations of tsuru he looks so mad or upset all the time it makes me want to tease him, and also i think the grey skin and eyebags are very cute

i associate him with whales and tarot card 18: the moon

season 3 - golden grove - fox tsuru

honestly i think this is my favorite design of him i kinda popped off. i think im just a lot more comfortable working with warm colors. and also i associate white tsuru with foxes anyway (black tsuru is totally a catboy btw) (why is he not associated with cranes if his name is tsuru you ask?? bc cranes are hard to draw next question. he did start out based off cranes tbf, thats where the white hair and the tallness comes from)

dead fox possessing his dead human friend's body (although thats only the most literal interpretation of events; in all these iterations there's only ever been 1 person) the white tsurus are mostly interested in "moving on", whatever that means to each of them

btw my banner on this blog is him

hes sort of a set with s2 tsuru to me, mostly bc theyre the ideals that "white tsuru" and "black tsuru" hold taken to the extremes, and also theyre on opposite ends of the "hates people hates talking" and "loves to talk and mess with people" scale

anyway. hes tarot card 10: wheel of fortune to me

season 4 - wild west - mirage

the desert dragon, mirage. this is the season i started giving them actual names that arent "tsuru" and putting actual thought into the story lol previously it was just vibes-based character design. i have a short thing written about him thats meant to be the script for a comic, but i never got around to drawing it.

a sandworm-esque dragon that got tired of being a dragon and took up a passing witch's offer to give him a human form. this is all a metaphor i think. he has longer hair bc i wanted to spice things up a little

(also i consider this a form of death bc he left behind a giant sandworm/dragon skeleton somewhere in the desert)

the mirage-dragon thing comes from the shen 蜃 (which is used in the chinese word for mirage, 海市蜃楼 haishi shenlou, literally translating to "ocean city and shen's castle"). it's a clam-like dragon that produces foam that creates mirages over the ocean.

if u read "even if you slit my mouth", this is what the "shinkiro" or "shin" in recent chapters is. (i had one of those "smug because i already know all about the mythological creature a story is referencing" moments, which i also had with the four gods in yohaji bc i used to translate a game that mentioned them too)

isnt it romantic in a way? that the two places mirages are most known for happening are the ocean and the desert.

i dont have too much art of him because around this time i was uhhh (checks calendar) got back into yohaji and got consumed by it for a couple months lol (can u even blame me. it was july to september that was when like chapter 91 came out lol)

an earlier version of his design that i didnt end up using but i still really like this art

hes tarot card 9: the hermit to me

season 5 - fairytales/medieval - ophiuchus

NO FUCKING WAY YOURE NEVER GOING TO BELIEVE THIS for this one i actually ironed out what kind of people the black haired and white haired versions of him are. and also specifically this one isnt black tsuru but alive tsuru

i have a short poem thing about him, to summarize its like so many other fairytales about grateful animals granting their saviors something, but it doesnt end well for anyone

hes based off ophiuchus and asclepius of course, but also a lot of other snake stories in general, like the lindwurm and baishezhuan

to reiterate, for none of these stories do i consider there to ever actually have been 2 separate people, its always just 1 fucked up guy

i also have a version of him i play for dnd, named alba to match with my party who all have color themed names. a halfling ranger who's very small and very loud. except he has amnesia and cant remember anything from before he was 12 (hes around 18 now according to him), including that he's actually a changeling who just transformed into a halfling to seem older than he is to work at a bar and nearly died in a bar fight.

(if you spend as much time fretting over semantics as me, you may note that changelings are medium sized and cannot transform into halflings which are small sized, for which my explanation is that he's been in halfling form since he was a kid, and after the amnesia he thought he actually was a halfling. this is also why his hair is white btw bc changelings have white hair. pre-amnesia in his "actual" halfling transformation he had black hair. i care too much about semantics but hey isnt dnd the semantics game anyway?)

anyway congrats alba for being the only version of tsuru that hasn't outright "died"!! if only because dnd has actual rules and i can't pull my usual death-ghost nonsense as easily!!!

hes very ship of theseus to me, all versions of him are. what makes up a person? what defines them? is it their face, their appearance, their name? their personality, their memories, their ideals? if you slowly replace each of those, one at a time, with a copy thats very similar to the original, at what point are you a different person?

as thanks for reading all of this i'll reveal what some of the metaphors are, the core of who tsuru, as a character, is to me. maybe this is fairly obvious, but all the death and personality weirdness stuff is a convoluted metaphor for depression and autism, as well as the experience of reading the things you've written years ago, seeing old photos and others talking about who you were years ago and finding that person wholly unfamiliar, that you understand the thought process of that person no more than you would a stranger's, as a result of having taken apart your identity and replaced it piece by piece with things from people you like more than yourself.

im always scared of scrutinizing tsuru too hard because he's just a weird reflection of myself, and i think i'll only be able to write a version of him thats more of a "whole person" once i figure that out for myself. the only way you see your own reflection is through a mirror after all, a flattened 2D surface.

haha this got kinda weird and depressing and personal at the end (mostly bc ive been writing this in the middle of the night, its now 4am)

after seeing my soul laid bare like this, if theres one takeaway, i think its pretty obvious why i'm so enamored by the parts of yohaji that i talk about often (huh wasnt this a post about my oc why did it become about yohaji)

oh yeah i just realised u probably also wanted to hear more about my yohaji version of tsuru specifically. honestly theres not really more to it i just like drawing him in situations. like of course the same themes apply but i just like drawing this dude thats 90% the reason hes my sona. like heres a pokemon au of him i drew recently bc i wanted to draw them as kids and also as pokemon gijinkas

Hi, Im wondering if its true that shonen jump will get in trouble with their government if they make it canon? How does the jp audience feel about this whole bakudeku vs izuocha war? Just asking out of curiosity.

So to answer your ask properly I need to explain a little about the censoring of gay representation in japan. I already know, a lot of people will not like what I will write now, so let me tell you I did my research about this topic already a 3-4 years ago and talked with japanese people living in japan, non japanese people, japanese bkdk shippers, non shippers and in generell with people who know a lot about this kind of stuff. And pretty much all of them told me the very same thing: that at least 50 more years need to pass till weekly shonen jump will allow an openly gay mc in their magazine.

In japan the gay censoring is VERY strict. Its not as bad as in many other countrys, but its still not good. Not even gay marriage is allowed and if a gay couple wants to live together, one of them needs to ADOPT the other and gay people also need to fear the possebility that their familys will bann them for their sexuality out of shame - and bringing shame to the family will literally destroy your life. In media gay representation is very strictly handled and watched over by the japanese government. Homosexuality is still seen as something "unpure". Something that is not quite normal. It has become better over the years, but in generell their view still sucks.

Thats why children till a certain age are not allowed to come in contact with everything that is or seems "gay". They want their children to stay "pure". Japan also has a problem with their birthrate, because more and more woman focus on their carriers and if anything they only want one child instead of 3, how it was once the norm. So they want to make sure that at least this children "stay streight" so they will give birth to their own children one day. By their logic: less gay people means more birth of children. Japan may be a very modern country, but when it comes to this topic they are certainly not. A lot of younger people want things to change, but still not much has changed for the better.

The anime and manga industry is one of the things japan makes the most money from, because of its popularity all around the world and because they want to support their artists and their art. But this industry is also very cruel and strict. There is a reason why so many mangakas get sick over the years and suffer from depressions and anime animators are terrible underpaid for all the work they do.

Like I already wrote the censorship of homosexuality in japanese media is very strict and mangakas, animators and puplishers have to go with the rules, otherwise they can lose their jobs or their storys will never see the light of day. Thats why mangas and animes are seperated into genres and age groups so younger children or teenagers dont see things they arent supposed to see till an certain age. Jump for example has a whole magazine series and all of them puplish mangas for a different reader group, age group and genre. For example jump+ is an online magazine, directed at adult female readers and allow gay main characters (blue flag comes to mind), because this online magazine is directed at woman who love gay romance. Other example is the magazine jump square directed to readers from 16 to 21. It also allows open gay representation. For example seraph: the sexuality of the mc is open for interpretation, but the mcs best friend is openly gay and both are attrackted to each other. Now we are comming to the weekly shonen jump magazine which mha is pulished in. This magazine is directed at young boys from the age of 9-13. Yes, a lot of older readers and woman read it too, but it doesnt change the fact that this magazine is directed at younger male readers. And like I wrote earlier, the gay censoring is so strict that children till a certain age are not allowed to come in contact with it. Thats the reason why till to this day, not one of weekly shonen jumps mangas has a confirmed and openly gay mc. Its simply not allowed, so to finally answer your question: yes! Shonen jump would get into trouple if they would allow a mangaka to make his mc gay. If a mangaka wants his mc to be gay, bi etc. his manga automatical would be puplished in one of the other magazines, like jump square, because its for older readers.

What weekly shonen jump allows are hints about homosexuality which would fly over the heads of younger readers and as long as its not the mc. And most of the time gay or trans representation is not portrayed in a positive light, but for comedic relief, the characters are unlikeable or have almost no screentime. Take mha for an example, magne and tiger are both trans. But magne was not only killed off very early in the story but also was a villain - one of the bad guys. Tiger is a hero, but has almost no screentime and doesnt talk much. Has no importance to the story. Toga was confirmted to be bi by hori, but not in the manga itself but in a interview. Togas sexuality would fly over younger childrends heads, because the manga only gives hints. Also just like magne toga is a villain - a girl who killed dotzens of people and loves to drink their blood. Not very good representation of bi people. Other example from bleach: there is an character named yumichika. His sexuality was never confirmed, but its pretty obvious that he is gay. In the beginning yumichka was a very unlikeable person and while he changed for the better, a lot of people still think his beauty fetish makes him very annoying. There are two trans characters (never openly confirmed by the author, but its pretty clear) named charlotte chulhorn who is a villain and a gag character and giselle also a villain who is pretty fucked up in the head. So you see the weekly shonen jump magazine doesnt really offer good representation of gay, bi or trans characters.

So, comming to an conclusion: if horikoshi or any other mangaka would want their mc to be gay, espicially openly gay and represent as a positiv thing, their storys would have been puplished in an other manga magazine and not weekly shonen jump, because the age group this magazine is directed at simply doesnt allow it. So yes, if weekly shonen jump would be a little more open they would get into trouple with the japanese government who watches their media very closely.

To answer your question about how the japanese readers think about the bkdk and izuocha war. Honestly I dont really know, all I know is that izuocha is not as hated as many non japanese bkdk shippers claim it is. It is the most popular hetero ship together with todomomo. Gay ships like bkdk, tododeku, kiribaku are so imcredible popular mainly because of female readers. Male readers dont really care about shipping, its more of an woman thing. But from what I have been told by both japanese bkdk fans and non shippers most of them are very well aware that no gay ship has any kind of chance to end up canon. Only the really hardcore fuyoshi fangirls dont want to accept it. To most japanese shippers its also not really a question about what will be canon and what not. They ship for fun. The japanese fandom takes this whole shipping thing by far not as serious as western countrys do.

At least I want to make clear, that nothing I wrote here is my personal opinion or taste when it comes to japans censoring. Its just from what I found out during my research about the topic. I would love to have more good gay, bi, trans, pan etc. representation in shonen jump, but I just see the things from a more realistic view. The only thing bkdk or shippers in generell can hope for is that all the characters stay single in the end, so hori would let it open for interpretation.

How long does it take you to make your artworks? It looks so majestic so i imagine it takes hours

though i never properly timed it id say every piece takes about 5-6 hours overall? though i take a pretty slow approach to art, i know a lot of artists have that "work until 3AM till the work is done" mentality but i dont do that part because i cant and simply dont want to.

i work in bits of 1-2 hours at a time and the first hour or so of most drawings is meticulous planning of the composition and color of the drawing i want to make.

^^^ like this. when i get a drawing idea i already know what type of composition and colors i want to do, but its a waste of time and energy to work those things out in the final drawing so i spend an hour just drawing glorified stickfigures over and over until i know excactly what i want in the finished drawing

especially in more complex compositions like these two drawings, it helps make the actual drawing process itself pretty smooth sailing because i already have a pretty good idea of what the end result will look like, and that im sure the idea is worth working out (lots of drawing ideas die in this phase because i end up not feeling it)

it's a boring process but i think this is the thing that makes my art appeal to people. my artstyle isnt very unique but the main thing people compliment is my colors and sense of atmosphere, both of which get fine-tuned first thing.

so yeah thats how i make my drawings so "majestic"! lots of planning and reading a lot about compositions
