Don’t think I ever quite said what my LGBTQ+ headcanons are for the boys, so these are my current thoughts! Always changing of course but this is what I feel most strongly right now.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt headcanons#rise donnie#rise leo#rise mikey#rise raph#donnie and leo’s sexualities being practically swapped was unintentional but it works way too well#same with mikey and raph tbh it was a happy accident#anyway I kinda hc raph as the type who doesn’t care about physical appearance just if you fight lol#Mikey’s more than happy with friends and family#Donnie is a BIG romantic but he needs time to sus a person out fully before he gets the hots for them#leo meanwhile isn’t keen on romance unless it’s with someone he grows to really really REALLY trust#I could go on and probably will later (knowing me) but it is late and I am tired haha#turtle art tag#curious as to what everyone else headcanons#the only one of these I’ll defend forever is Bi (female-leaning) donnie and trans leo#all the others can change over time but I really like where they’re sitting right now#I hope these are the right flags too because it was kinda hard to find them#went looking for transmasc flag in particular but I couldn’t find a solid agreed upon version 😭#ngl a big part of why I hc mikey as aro is because of a pun#my phone often misspells aromantic as aromatic and- and you get it- because aromatic herbs and- and Mikey is a chef do YOU GET IT#note that while I hc leo as bisexual (male-leaning) I still think he’s prob closer to demi in that as well just not as far into the spectrum#if that makes sense#headcanons are fun and hard to narrow down at the same time alas#I made this in like an hour can you tell djjdjd#I drew them all from memory so if there’s anything wrong…shhh#and if you’re wondering for April and Splinter#Both are Bisexual (female-leaning) but April is also Panromantic#I almost wanna make Splinter demiromantic too so Big Mama’s betrayal hits just a bit harder

Hey there, Sparkler! I’m so excited to see you back on Tumblr! I hope you’re doing well. I’m also wondering if you have any headcannons about Donatello being a dad to August? And what does Donnie do if August comes to him crying or has a nightmare? How does he comfort her?
And how are the other brothers like towards August? How do each of the boys, as well as Splinter and April, bond with August?
Tumblr media
Waaahh thank you! Oh man those are big think questions. Hmm!
I imagine Donnie’s feelings about hugs and cuddles haven’t changed much since he was younger but August gets special privileges, especially because he understands August herself is extremely tactile so physical comforts are big for her. If August come to him upset from a bad dream, she clings on to Donnie and he rubs her shell and lets her talk about it if she’s up to talking. She’ll spend the rest of the night in Papa’s bed curled against his side or on his chest. She gets a lot of comfort from hearing his heartbeat and breathing under her ear. ;^; <3
Tumblr media
August gets on SUPER well with her uncles, Aunt April, and Poppop Splinter (Even GrandBarry Draxum)! Donnie’s fully her dad but it takes a village to raise a kid and he has the best support system out there with his family. August is a very much loved kid who gives a lot of love back in return. Mostly she’s happy just joining her family in whatever they’re doing - cooking, training, lab work, naps, games, running errands, you name it. She loves following along and learning actively. Just keep her busy and don’t let her mind wander - a bored August is a mischievous August and no one wants that. I also imagine the family playing make believe and stuff with her when she’s little - think Bluey type games (I KNOW Leo would commit FULLY to the bit Bandit style too). Hehee :3c

GitS Short Story: Halloween
A Halloween Special! :D
Read here!
“Ghost, do you know what Halloween is?” Mikey asked.
Ghost blinked and looked at the 11-year-old. Mikey was rocking sideways in Ghost’s hammock, feet propped against the wall and head and arms hanging off the other side. He was watching Ghost, who was working at his computer.
“Yeah,” Ghost said.
“Well…” Mikey drew out the word, long and slow. “Me, Leo, Raph and Donnie were wondering… Every year we go out trick-or-treating with April…” He paused. Whether for dramatic effect or gauging the older turtle’s reaction, Ghost couldn’t really tell.
“I know.” Ghost might as well see where this was going.
“You’re okay with it?” Mikey asked, perking up.
“Yeah.”
Ghost had vague memories of Halloween with his own brothers. They’d done it a few times as pre-teens, with Splinter guiding them through and people complimenting their odd “costumes”. Most people thought they were just wearing costumes when they saw the turtles.
He remembered after they got back to the lair, and they would all pile on Leo’s bed and lay out their haul. All the twizzlers went to Leo, all the chocoplenties went to Mikey, all the lifesavers went to Ghost, all the skittles went to Raph. The smarties were all piled together and split evenly, with Splinter solemnly being bestowed with any extras.

the longest movie marathon
platonic!rottmnt x gn!reader
summary: after your snow day had gone to all hell thanks to ghostbear, a very alarming piece of information came to light: you had never seen a jupiter jim movie. not a single one. that just wouldn’t do. you know what that means - movie night! [set after s1e23b, snow day]
word count: 916
a/n: first real post! i’m not sure how i feel about the writing on this one, but i tried. i’m also still on mobile (i’m probably going to be on mobile for a while) so again, formatting might be messed up. hope someone enjoys this!
Tumblr media
◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤◢◤
That morning, you had woken up to a fresh layer of snow over New York.
Needless to say, you were delighted. You were even more delighted when you received a text from Leo, asking to hang out with everyone at the park. You had a great time; you built a snowman, participated in a snowball fight, and the hot cocoa was great too!
Oh, and pro wrestling champion Ghostbear got mutated and attacked you, but that’s just a given.
However, throughout the day, the turtles and April kept arguing over movie rankings. Even Mayhem seemed to have an opinion (every time you saw him, that thing seemed more and more intelligent). It was pretty funny, actually. It all sounded so bizarre out of context. You thought they’d finally dropped it after freezing Ghostbear. You should’ve known better than that. Just as you were leaving, Leo made some comment, and it was back in full force.
“I’m sorry, but have you seen the special effects in JJ Sails the Seven Galaxies? It is absolutely HORRENDOUS-!”
“There is a REASON PV4 is the last Pluto Vacation!”
They’d been going on like this for nearly two blocks now. You were used to this sort of thing - hell, you were a part of this sort of thing when you understood the topic. The longer it went on, the more ridiculous the arguments got, and less comprehensible. You were starting to near your apartment, but they showed no signs of stopping.
“(Y/N)!”
“JEEZ-“ You stumbled, dropping the sled you’d been dragging behind you. You had not expected all of them to yell your name at once.
“You haven’t said anything-“
“All day!” Leo cut Donnie off. April jammed a hand over both of their mouths.
“You’re gonna settle this for us. Which is the better movie, Pluto Vacation 4-“
“- Or Sails the Seven Galaxies?” Raph finished.
There was a silence. They all stared, waiting for your reply.
“Dunno. I’ve never seen ‘em.”
“WHAT?!”
•°. *࿐
You’d gone years of your life without seeing even a single Jupiter Jim movie. According to the turtles, April, and (apparently) Mayhem, this was nothing less than a crime against sci-fi. Thus, movie night was scheduled.
One week later, you sat in the lair. Donnie was fiddling with the projector, which wasn’t turning on because Leo had unplugged it. You weren’t going to tell him that, of course. April was going over the ‘ground rules’ with you.
“Oh, and whatever you do, do NOT get attached to Planetary Percy, okay?”
“Why-“
“Don’t.”
The projection screen suddenly flickered to life. You turned around to see Donnie by the outlet, glaring at Leo.
“Gee. I wonder who could’ve done that.”
Watching the stare-off, you were just waiting for Donnie to throw something at him. Before that could occur, however, Mikey appeared from seemingly nowhere holding a pizza box.
“PIZZA! And plenty of other snacks waiting in the kitchen for whenever we’re ready!”
“Thanks, Mikey!” Everyone took a slice for themselves. Just as Leo was taking his, Donnie hit him in the back with a pillow.
“HEY-!”
Raph quickly snatched said pillow up from the ground and held it to his chest. You tuned the twins out and turned to Raph, who was sitting on the floor by the couch. “Where’s Splinter?”
“Oh, he doesn’t like Jupiter Jim. Lou Jitsu superiority, and all that.” Raph shrugged.
“Makes sense.”
“I still can’t believe you’ve never seen Jupiter Jim!” Mikey sat down next to you.
“Yeah, I mean, it seems like the kind of thing you’d be into.” April agreed. “Why’d you never watch it?”
You shrugged. “Spite.”
“Excuse me?”
“Spite. It’s like a game, seeing just how long you can go without it. It drives people insane, it’s funny.”
“You monster.”
“I know.” You grinned. “But I’ll watch it with you guys, if it’s really that important to you.”
“Aw, you do care about us!” You lightly kicked Raph’s arm.
“Are we going to start the movie or not?”
Within the next five minutes, Donnie finally got the very first Jupiter Jim movie set up. You were sandwiched in between April and Mikey, the latter of whom kept quoting lines as they were said. Every so often, Donnie would pipe up with some behind the scenes fun fact, or he’d explain some easter egg.
Jupiter Jim movies 1-3 was pretty decent as a trilogy.
Jupiter Jim: Pluto Vacation was mediocre.
Jupiter Jim Sails the Seven Seas was fantastic.
Jupiter Jim: Origins was fantastically bad.
You fell asleep during the holiday special - according to Leo, you didn’t really miss anything.
You spent all night watching every single movie in this ridiculously long franchise. You knew you’d regret it when you needed to do homework tomorrow, but in the moment, you had no regrets.
As the credits to Atomic Lass Returns rolled, you let out a long yawn. Everyone looked pretty tired - Mikey had fallen asleep on your shoulder three times already.
“And that’s the last one. Well, until May 23rd, when Atomic Lass Dies Again comes out,” Donnie announced.
You stretched, feeling a bone pop somewhere. “I’m pretty sure that was the longest movie marathon in my life.”
“Oh, probably.” April yawned. “But now that it’s over…”
Here we go again.
“Which is the best movie, (y/n)?”
What were you expecting, really? All eyes were on you, waiting for you to decide the fate of Jupiter Jim’s tier ranking.
“I like Invasion of the Squirrelanoids best, actually.”
“OH, COME O-“

Disaster Twins gonna Disaster, no matter what future they’re in...
(inspired in part by @sheep-turtles-and-pizza‘s Future Twins comic)
They were infamous.
Leonardo and Donatello; the leader and the scientist, the stalwart hero and the stoic genius. There wasn’t a recuit in the resistance against the Krang that didn’t have a story about them; Leonardo bolstering the last dregs of their courage in dire moments of battle, leading them to victory with nothing more than a grin and a wink, Donatello terrifying them into silence in the mess hall with a cocked eyebrow as he worked on his latest project, subsisting on nothing but a salvaged pack of cigarettes and two hours’ sleep and still, somehow, coming up with wonders of technology that no-one else could have ever dreamed of.
Both Yokai cut an imposing figure on their own, but together? They were a force to be reckoned with; striding through the corridors of the resistance base, their eyes steely and determined as they talked strategy, Leonardo firing off rapid solutions to problems as Donatello proposed them. The very fate of the base - the resistance against the Krang - the world! - rested on their broad, shelled shoulders. Nothing could stand in their way, no-one could stop them on their mission to -- “DONNIE!”
Both turtles froze mid-step as the echoes of the scream bounced off the resistance base walls. It must have been a trick of the light, but it almost - almost! - looked like Donatello winced.
“Yeeees, dear sister?”
“I told you not to leave your shit lying around in the common room!”
“It isn’t ‘shit’, April,” Donatello called to the diembodied voice, “it’s a highly delicate peice of equiptment that --”
“Then why is it in the common room?!”
Donatello’s gaze didn’t so much hit the floor as plummet. “...because I was playing Purple Game 3 last night while I finished it.”
“Oooooooooh,” Leonardo sang, nudging his brother in the ribs. “You’re in troooouble --”
“Nardo. Do not.”
“You’re gonna get groooouuundeeeeed --”
“Push.”
There were about twelve members of the resistance who saw what happened next. And no-one ever believed them when the told the tale.
“Ow! What the hell, D?!” Leonardo bounced off the wall his brother shoved him into, tackled him to the ground and...and licked the most amazing scientific mind of their generation from chin to temple. “Blllaaaaaaaaaaaaaurgh.”
“Ewwwww, Leo! Sweet Galileo, you absolute reprobate --”
“Dunno what that means, so I’ll take it as a compliment - no, Donnie, not the pits, don’tpokemeinthearmpits --!”
“GUYS.”
Both turtles froze in place as a pair of bright yellow combat boots stomped down the corridor towards them. Slowly - guiltily - they got to their feet.
Not many members of the resistance had known Master Splinter. But what they did know - because they’d heard it so many times, being yelled across the base and screamed on the battlefield - who had been left in charge of his four legendary sons when he died.
The tall, dark-haired woman stopped in front of Leonardo and Donatello; foot tapping, arms crossed, expression grim.
“Fighting? Really?”
“Mm-hm.”
“Yeah, we were. But he started it.”
“Whaaaaaaaat?! How....dare you...”
Unfortunately, Donatello’s dramatics could not halt the commander in her stride. She’d seen it all before. “You think we have the resources to fix these walls if you dum-dums break ‘em? Nuh-uh! I thought you were grown men now, but clearly I was wrong. Guess I’ll have to separate you.” Leonardo was spun around on his heel and swatted on the back. “You? Go that way. Make yourself useful in the training room with Cass.”
“But I’ve got a War Room meeting in five!”
“Tough. March.”
“I’m going, I’m going!” Lenoardo grumbled as he huffed back the way he’d came. “Jeeeeez, thirty years old an’ I just got my War Room privileges taken away.”
“That’s right, you did. And you --” Donatello was dragged by the wrist into the common room. “Get whatever that bucket of bolts is cleaned up, before someone trips and breaks their neck. And give me that!”
“Hey! That’s my last cigarette!”
“It’s a filthy habit, D. You’ve been told. If you can’t stop cold turkey, I’ll have to tell Libby from Supplies to cut you off.”
“Okay okay! Alright, I’ll stop. Just...don’t embarass me in front of Libby from Supplies, m’kay?”
Watching her brother stoop down to sort his tech into manageable piles, the commander folded her arms with a smirk. “Oh? And why’s that? You got a lil’ cruuuuuush? Got a lil’ crush, huh Donnie?”
A wrench was thrown. It missed by a mile.
“Cease, you mortfying harpy!”
“Clear up your shit, then.”
“Ffffffffffffine.”
Leonardo and Donatello were infamous. But Commander April O’Neil was legendary.

During the episode ‘The Mutant Menace’ Donnie mentions that when he was designing the Turtle Tank he was told to ‘go stealth’ & I was wondering who gave him that advice
Tumblr media
Mikey: Hey we look like a giant turtle!
Donnie: Yeah! Everyone was saying ‘go stealth! Go stealth!’ But come on look at us!
The first guess would be that one of Donnie’s brothers told him to go stealth for the Turtle Tank’s design but the thing is that Donnie’s brothers didn’t know what the Turtle Tank looked like before they saw it so they couldn’t have had an input on the design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikey: Whoa! Donnie! Nice work
Considering that the Turtle Tank was built in the earlier episodes, the Hamato clan haven’t yet made that many allies so outside of his brothers Donnie doesn’t have many people to go to for advice except for Splinter & April and though Donnie could have talked about the Turtle Tank’s design to Splinter considering that Splinter knew enough about the Turtle Tank to steal it of the two April is the one that Donnie is most likely to go to for advice.
Tumblr media
April: Donnie have you been experimenting on their brains again?
We know that April is a confidant for the Turtles considering she knows about the events of the episode Mind Meld even though she wasn’t there for it meaning that one of the Turtles (most likely Donnie) told her about it.
Considering that the Turtles like to confide in April it would make sense that Donnie would discuss the design for the Turtle Tank with her & it would also make sense why she was Donnie’s first suspect when the Turtle Tank went missing because she was the one Donnie showed the design of the Turtle Tank to.
Tumblr media
Donnie: Don’t give me that, you’re the only one who coulda taken it
The reason that Donnie said that April could be the only one who could have taken the Turtle Tank might be because she was the only one that Donnie told about the design of the Turtle Tank.

I wondered if you could do the main 4 boys (mikey, donnie, raph, leo) w/ a yokai shapeshifter s/o (can shapeshift into different types of animal yokai)? If you can’t that alright as well, you could just ignore/delete and move on with your day! That’s fine by me.
rottmnt x gn reader
Raphael never figures it out.
It was never meant to be a trick or a prank at first. You just assumed they all knew you could shapeshift when you introduced yourself for the second time as a different animal Yokai. His brothers had got it immediately, but apparently he didn’t.
You found out he didn’t know when you came to their lair in a new form and he had mentioned how they just kept meeting more and more people with the same name as you. His brothers, who were shaking while trying to hold in their laughter, frantically motioned for you to not say anything. This went on for months.
Leonardo and you get into loads of trouble. Leo has been banned from many shops and establishments in the Hidden City. But luckily, he has a friend who can change their identity at will.
It also helps that he can swap out his bandana for a different color and people will think he’s one of his brothers. It’s awesome.
You two end up on Hidden City Central news. It’s one of Leo’s greatest accomplishments and he only got grounded by Splinter for a week. It was totally worth it.
Donatello is not quite sure what to think of you. It’s strange to him for you to have so many appearances. He keeps his distance at first and is slow to warm up because of this.
He hates when you pop up out of nowhere and start talking to him in a new form and he doesn’t know it’s you. It got to the point where he gets you one of those “Hello, my name is” stickers for you to wear with your name on it.
Michelangelo takes full advantage of your ability. He sees the possibilities that his brothers cannot. He uses you as his muse for art, and since you can look as many different types of Yokai as you and Mikey want, you can be his muse forever. He’ll never be able to get bored of you.
He even buys you a mug with #1 Art Muse on it.
He also likes to grab ahold of you when you’re in a smaller form and throw you full force at enemies so you can shapeshift into something large and heavy hitting. You two have taken out many people with that strategy. You’ve only accidentally hit Raph three times and he’s forgiven you all three times as well.
April and you are inseparable. At the beginning, she used you as a way to have a bunch of friends. With you and the many forms you could take, she has more friends than she can count.
On the less depressing side, you can help her get stories down in the Hidden City. You’re able to impersonate and look like family members of rich and powerful Yokai figures so you can get her leads for new stories. You are the catalyst to her career.

Ok based on that small post you mentioned about Draxum would destroy some bullies house if reader was getting bullied and now I’m wondering what would the rest of the Hamato clan do if reader was getting bullied ?
ok i know you were probably referring to the turtles, april, and splinter, but as soon as i read hamato clan, i just thought of the souls of 100+ hamato spirits flying out of their scrolls so they could haunt some teenager because they stole their great-great-great-great-great-grandchild’s lunch money.
but anyways, long story short, everyone’s throwing hands. well, almost everyone.
splinter comforts (y/n) and tells them everything is ok, he gives them snacks, lets them watch their favorite movie on his projector, then tells his sons behind doors to throw hands.
raph throws hands right away. no hesitation, no questions asked. has to be held back for a while so he doesn’t do it in broad daylight.
donnie tracks down where they live and lets his robots throw hands for him. is sitting in the lair, enjoying quality time with (y/n), they’re watching a movie and every once in a while donnie looks down at his wrist screen thingy to check on his robots.
leo uses the situation to his advantage, comforting (y/n) and being like “you’re too good for them, they’re just jealous” to get on their good side. then he throws hands.
mikey pulls a dr. delicate touch and straight up traumatizes the bully. also he throws hands.
april is the most sane out of all of them. undeniably hates the bully, but she tries to be civil and talk it out like a regular person. if the bullying persists, though, she’s throwing hands.
draxum doesn’t throw hands. he throws tables. directly at the bully’s face.

Hey hey hey!! It’s me
Tbh I don’t know if you’re building an AU or if your yan teetlez are more of an individual idea if ykwim— but I was wondering what April’s role in the family dynamic would be? And/or splinter?
No need to answer this if you’re not interested I’m just curious lol 🤷
Hello there!! For this question, it's a little complicated actually!
I'm not really building an AU (except for my fucked UP Yandere Raph Au of course) for the turtles, but I do imagine that April and Splinter's role could go this way:
They're initially suspicious would be disapproving if they find out the nature of the turtle's relationship, but they are very close to the turtles, and CAN be convinced to let it slide... unfortunately for Y/n :)
Splinter in my view, would be the easiest to convince to leave the boys be. If the turtles can hide the fact that y/n doesn't want the situation they're in (via peer pressure, threats and etc), splinter would be very supportive and encourage this relationship! He'd be excited to see that his sons are in love, easily brushing off any... suspicious hints whenever they come up- all of the sake of making his sons happy and increasing the chances of grandkids
April would have a harder time being convinced however, she can see through the turtles with ease. And they'd also have a hard time threatening her too, especially since she can whoop their asses if she chose to. Their only option is to really hide their relationship with y/n from her... or make April see their perspective and subtly manipulate her (Leo comes in handy here) to understand why they're doing this. But keep in mind, April is very likely to go against their plans, and they'll end up killing her if she goes too far. If not killing, Donnie might simply make April forget that she even wants to help y/n, possibly implanting fake memories or wiping it altogether.

All my thoughts and theories of this adorable clip:
Guys the soundtrack in the background sounds so good and epic, and I’m so loving the use of hip hop and rap in every trailer. You forget how effective black music is for action movies too considering how little it’s used comparatively. And it’s another thing about this movie that gives off Spider-verse vibes 👏🏽
Oml guys MM Leo is just like 2012 he’s such a dork and he gets all pouty all the time and the way Raph trolls him about it is just like the 2012 duo 🥹
I’m sorry the way Leo smiles so much while reciting that horrible speech??? 😂 like it doesn’t matter what Splinter tells them it is gold that he will gobble up even if it is objectively prejudice
Speaking of which, “I know that’s objectively prejudice but it’s what Dad taught us” line is so relatable to most kids today like yikes what a motto of the 21st century
But it really makes me wonder what Splinter’s backstory is going to be in this iteration considering no other version has hated or had a gripe with the human race as far as I’ve seen. I assumed he was going to be formerly human too, although this clip makes it seem that might not be the case, but if he still is I think that makes his speech to the kids much more interesting and honestly hilarious because if any of us were in his position would we tell them much differently? I mean come on that “they lust to murder that which is different from them” is so spot on. And honestly we already teach kids everything else he said too when it comes to strangers 😂 humans are bad, don’t say hi, humans are everything wrong with this planet, do not interact or you will die 👍🏽
“We wouldn’t have K-Pop without humans!” Wtf he’s so pure ugh
“I’d love to have a champagne brunch with Tom Brady” OMG GUYS HE’S JUST SO PROPER AND DORKY AGH
“Drake! That guy is the GOAT of all time.” I’m sorry did I hear that right 😂 sweet simple Raph ya gotta know what the terms mean if you’re gonna use modern slang
“Guy Fieri seems like a fun hang” ooooh continuing with the Mikey is the cook character trope maybe?
I really think this whole bit here is an interesting way of setting up the mutants vs human premise of the movie with the turtles in the middle of it all. Especially the way Leo recites that anti-human speech so whole-heartedly but also still acknowledges that they all disagree with Splinter about how cool humans are. Especially since they likely keep their own beliefs about it from their Dad, which again, so relatable to kids of old-fashioned parents today
“oOh i’M tHe lEaDeR. You sound like you have bronchitis!” They way they mock and roast him is just too much and too accurate 😂 also I just love their overlapping conversational moments
Other thoughts:
Also I gotta say in these released clips Leo is pouting or anxious half of the time while his bros are always having fun and I just gotta see how much that’s amplified in the entirety of the movie… Like it makes it seems like he must feel some kind of rift between him and his brothers sometimes and I want to see if that’s true
These kids are truly on their own… They at least start off keeping their fondness of humans from Splinter, they still can’t interact with humans either way, they find a group of mutants like them and seem to hit it off at first but then it just turns a whole fiasco where they have to defend humans from them, and at some later point we know when they do interact with/are exposed to humans it does not go well. I’m so excited to see how they tackle that post-climactic depressive section of the movie where the boys are really feeling the weight of all of it. Like, not too many clips have been released and there’s already so much isolation on their end. I’m glad April will at least be one positive outlet for them

Question; in you’re chose family au do splinter and Carol end up in a relationship or have more of a friendship or think of each other a sibling; or is it like queer platonic relationships? Or is it a mix?
Because I was wondering if splinter stay at Carol’s apartment would the boys end up calling her ” mom” and April calling a splinter “dad?” Or would they just be called aunt/uncle?
They are not going to be in a relationship in the comic, they are friends in it! As for the other questions, I can't answer them without spoilering some huge chunks of the comic!

Sayuri Meets the Boys
Tumblr media
“April… are you sure this is a good idea?” Sayuri sighed as she stood over the manhole side-by-side with April. “I feel like I should have received some sort of invitation, don’t you think?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?” She smiled. “They want to meet you as much as you want to meet them. Besides, I’ve already asked Master Splinter. It’ll be fine, Yuri. Now get in.”
Months since the kidnapping incident, Sayuri always kept her balcony door open for Leo who gladly visited her almost every night and joined her as she studied. On days he was unavailable, they would always keep in touch via message and phone calls. As time passed by, the extent of their attraction to one another became more apparent to not only April and Casey, but to Leo’s family as well. He would hum gleefully as he cleaned the dojo, was gradually less overbearing on his brothers (which Raph and Mikey did not mind one bit), and was constantly on his phone despite his slight aversion to technology (much to Donnie’s amusement). Above all, Leo found himself constantly talking about Sayuri to his father during tea. Wanting to meet the girl behind Leo’s recent elation, Master Splinter asked April if she could bring Sayuri to the Lair so that she can have dinner with the entire family.
Unbeknownst to Leo, he continued to engage in a heated spar against Raph as Mikey and Donnie observed from the sidelines.
“How much longer!” Mikey groaned slouching over.
“Well,” Donnie replied as one of his monitors chirped. “April’s here, so maybe not as long as you think.”
“April’s here all the time, what’re you talking about?”
“I mean April and her,” Donnie smirked. Mikey’s lips formed into an ‘o’ beginning to snicker at his blue-clad older brother drenched in sweat.
“Do you think he knows?” Mikey giggled.
“Are you kidding?” Donnie snorted. “In that state? Not in the slightest.”
Just as Leo was beginning to have the upper hand in the spar, April and Sayuri stepped into the Lair.
“Hey Angelcakes!” Mikey exclaimed. “Who’s your pretty friend?”
Leo suddenly averted his gaze towards the entryway and was met with a familiar stare.
“Everyone! This is Sayuri.”
At his moment of distraction, Raph quickly pinned down his brother to the ground, securing victory.
“Whooo!” Raph howled. “That’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout! How’s that Fearless?”
Sayuri giggled at Leo, whose defeated, sweaty form was splayed against the dojo floor in just utter embarressment. Mikey and Donnie snickered as Raph joined them towards April and Sayuri. Master Splinter then appeared from his quarters and Leo was trailed him shyly in his wake.
“It’s so wonderful to finally meet you Sayuri,” Splinter smiled as she took her hand in his. Sayuri wasn’t even fazed as she looked kindly upon the old rat and laughed at something he said. “These are my sons…”
“Raphael,”
Raph grunted and nodded at her in acknowledgement.
“Donatello,”
“Pleased to meet ya,” Donnie chirped.
“Michelangelo,”
“Hello~ babycakes,” Mikey winked.
“And I’m sure you’re quite acquainted with Leonardo,” Splinter smiled as he turned towards his eldest son at the back of the room.
“Hey,” Leo said to her shyly.
“Hi,” Sayuri grinned.
Just then April looked up from her phone, “Heads up guys, Andi’s coming. Casey’s picking her up.”
“Then we better get the table set,” Leo interjected suddenly, steering away Raph who threw him a funny look as they headed into the direction of the showers instead. Splinter chuckles as a retreats to his quarters to wash up before dinner. He excuses himself and leaves promptly.
“Alright!” Mikey cheered, slinging his arms across Sayuri and April’s. “Three of the hottest babes in New York are gonna be under this roof tonight!”
“Watch your hands, Mikey. Sayuri’s not exactly single.” April winked as Sayuri blushed profusely.
“My bad, my bad,” Mikey raised his hands. “Anyways Sayuri, may I have the pleasure of touring you around our humble abode?” Sayuri laughed at Mikey’s posh imitation as he offered his arm to her.
“Yes you may good sir,” Sayuri smiled as she looped her arm through his.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
The household held such a chaotic and vibrant energy. Splinter with his wisdom, Mikey with his charms, Raphael with his quiet brooding, Donatello with his imagination, and well… Leo with what Sayuri calls his “adorable anxiety.” Everyone was settling down at the table, both their bottoms and the bottoms of plates of heaping food when Casey enters the Lair. Behind him a girl, just about Sayuri’s age and height follows. She was wearing a pink sweater tucked in white slacks. Her long, caramel hair was in a half-up hairstyle adorned with a pink bow. Sayuri thought two things, one: she looked like the softest thing on the planet and that she couldn’t possibly harm a fly, two: she’s rocking the pink Barbie aesthetic. At the sight of her, Donnie ran towards the young woman with such haste that he nearly knocked Mikey from his seat.
“Oh Enchantress!” He sighs as he lifts her into his arms. “How I’ve missed you!”
“Hello my professor,” her hand grazed his cheek lovingly.
“Well that’s excessive,” Raph remarked from the table.
“Your stupidity is excessive,” she shot back. Mikey snorted.
“Now,” she sighed as Donnie let her down. “Where’s this Sayuri that everyone’s been talking about?”
Sayuri waved from the table.
“Hey! The name’s Andi!”
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
Dinner was commencing and it was in full swing. Chinese and Italian is on the menu tonight and everyone was digging in. It was wasn’t an enormous round table where everyone sat at, so it was a quite a tight fit. Leo didn’t mind as long Sayuri’s smooth arm grazed against his on occasion, and sharing a glance afterwards.
“You all right?” He whispered to her. He smelled like his homemade soap and of green tea. Sayuri wished she could just bottle the scent of him and mist over all her cardigans.
“Yeah,” Sayuri whispered back. “Leo?”
“Yeah?”
“Your family’s really cool.”
Leo smiled.
Sayuri chuckled.
“Donnie looks really happy,” she says as she watched Andi feed Donnie a dumpling from her plate. “They look so good together.”
“Yeah?” Leo says to her smiling. “So do we.”
Sayuri’s cheeks reddened as Leo held her hand under the table.
“You’re one of us now.”

Prompt if still taking them: every turtle is a tot all of a sudden except Mikey, what will he do? (Since this episode was sadly canceled)
Anon: If you’re still taking writing prompts- maybe one of the turtles gets de-aged, and the others realize that how that turtle acts at that age is Not At All what they remember (examples: Donnie meltdown isn’t as attention-seeking like they remember, Raph isn’t trying to be the ‘favorite’ son he’s just looking for approval/taking care of his brothers, etc). Can be angst or not, those are just some examples of what I mean!
This was requested twice so I figured I'd reward two birds with one seed! Or... however you'd twist the phrase, I dunno I just work here.
SO! This was a challenge, and I may or may not write a part two depending on how I feel, but for now, I hope y'all enjoy this!
SAVE RISE! JUSTICE FOR THE CANCELLED EPISODES!!
EDIT: NOW PART 1 OF 2
---
Donnie hadn't been kidding when he'd offhandedly dubbed their missions as 'episodic mystic hi-jinks, because this is something Mikey sees far too often in western cartoons and tv shows. Which, of course, means it was only a matter of time before it happened to them.
'It' being that his older brothers have been turned into toddlers.
Mikey's still not sure how Hypno had gotten his hands on the spell or why he'd ever want to use it on anyone. Worse still, he'd seemed just as surprised as Mikey after the dust had cleared to reveal three very confused, very tiny and very cute versions of his three older brothers, their gear and now too-big masks in a pile on the asphalt. Clearly, he hadn't known the spell would do that. Which was just great.
He'd looked from the tots to Mikey with bulging eyes. Mikey had stared back.
“Well. Um. Good luck with that, bye!”
Then the hippo vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving Mikey to deal with the tots who had stared at him for three seconds before bursting into tears.
For the first two hours after teleporting them back to the lair with Leo's swords—thank Pizza Supreme in the sky it'd worked first try—he'd been fine. Splinter is still off with Draxum on a sort of 'Bonding But Not Much Because Trauma' trip somewhere in the Hidden City, and April and Casey had classes until noon, leaving Mikey to work things out on his own.
No biggie. He's a big turtle now. He faced worse and came out on top with a smile. Watching his big-turned-little-brothers should be a walk in the park.
His experience with kids is limited, but he knows his brothers. Their likes, tells and quirks that make them who they are.
Leo loves the special ducky blanket that he's had since forever. Raph has his teddies to smother himself in. Donnie has the special oversized hoodie that's heavy enough to ground him, loose and soft enough that it doesn't hug his body too tight or scratch his skin—even if it's a few sizes too big for a three-year-old body and trails after him like a dress wherever he goes. And you can never go wrong with Lou Jitsu, which he'd popped on the minute they'd gotten home to silence the first crying fit. They were immediately entranced, clapping and giggling with every 'HOT SOUP!' bellowed by their father in human form.
That, and they're toddlers. They'll laugh at anything, Mikey had realized after tearing a piece of paper had sent Leo into hysterical giggles. 'Popping' his lips had made Donnie clap his hands and scream, and, for some reason, Raph loved when Mikey pretended to eat his arm.
Kids are freaking weird. Mikey films it all.
For the first two hours, Mikey killed it as the new big brother. Things were quiet, and Mikey had plenty of blackmail pictures saved in the cloud where not even Donnie could reach them. Honestly, it was rather relaxing, and Mikey wondered how Splinter had such a hard time with them at this age.
But then they got bored. And they realized the Lair wasn't the same one they remembered growing up in.
Mikey hadn't realized it wasn't just their bodies that got reversed, but he learns it quickly when Donnie wakes up from a nap in his room only to find it's not his room and bursts into hysterics.
From there, it's chaos.
Donnie won't stop screaming and crying, throwing himself on the floor and banging tiny fists against his head the way he used to when he wanted attention. That's what they'd all thought, at least, for years until Splinter had finally called a professional after the damage was already done.
Leo is more of a hassle than he is at sixteen, running everywhere and turning everything into a game, laughing when Mikey begs him to get off the fridge, bursting with an energy he doesn't know what to do with yet, doesn't know how.
And then Mikey gives in and shouts at him—he really doesn't mean to, he knows what it feels like, she should know better than to get mad, but he's stressed, now, and it bursts out of his mouth before his brain can stop it—“Knock it off, you little pest!”
And Leo freezes. Staring at Mikey—no, through him, like he's seeing something else, something other than his brother, bigger and scarier. His face crumples seconds before he runs off again to hide in an unfamiliar lair, sobbing, and Mikey feels like a monster.
That's probably what Leo thinks, too.
Then Raph, distressed and angry with the noise and lack of attention, bites through the table leg.
Mikey damn near loses it. Instead, he calls April.
“April, please, I'm begging you,” he cries into the phone while trying to wrangle a still-sobbing Donnie in his other arm, hooking his leg around Raph's waist to drag him away from the table for all his efforts to cling as tears spring in his eyes now. “I can't do this! Donnie can't talk to me, Raph bit through the table, and Leo's still missing 'cos I shouted at him, and I called him a little pest, and—”
“Mikey, you gotta breathe. Breathe, baby. We'll be right over, I'll call Splintz and Barry, and we'll work this out. Hang on just a little longer, okay?”
Mikey hates it when they treat him like a little kid. He's fifteen now, nearly sixteen. He's survived ancient evils and an alien invasion, a ninja and mystic warrior in his own right. But April's voice through the speakers soothes him like it always has, and he decides he doesn't mind being babied again just this once. He kinda needs it.
He sniffles. At his feet, Raph goes very still. “Okay. Yeah, yeah, okay, I can—I can deal. Thanks, April.”
“For you, big man? Anything.”
She hangs up. Donnie is still crying in his arm, but he's worn himself out now, so it's mostly just hiccups and sniffles that break Mikey's heart in a billion different ways as the little guy chews his fingers, tears dripping down his flushed face, and Raph is—
“Sowwy.”
Mikey looks down and sees Raph abandoning the destroyed table leg to hug Mikey's instead, rubbing his cheek against Mikey's knee. His snaggletooth peeks out from his top lip as he smiles in that adorable, harmless, ever-soothing way Mikey remembers from their childhood.
Back when Raph had to be more than the big brother.
They've all come to accept that Splinter wasn't the perfect father for all that they adore him. They've accepted that they'd had to raise themselves as Splinter dealt with his trauma the only way he knew how while still providing for four unexpected children. And after a long talk that involved more shouting, tears and whispered apologies, Raph and Splinter both accepted that Raph had been shouldering the burden of the Big Brother and substitute parent for far longer than any kid should ever be allowed to, if at all.
But it's a slap in the face to see it now on a four-year-old version of his big brother. Still looking out for everyone else, even when he's no longer the eldest in the room. Stepping up when the adults in his life failed to.
Mikey stares. Little Raph stares back and keeps smiling.
Mikey drops to his knees and grabs Little Raph into the tightest hug he can manage with Donnie squirming in the other arm. Little Raph's pudgy arms immediately snap around Mikey and Donnie, because of course they do, and Mikey's chest aches. “It—It's okay, Little Man,” he croaks, then clears his throat and tries again with a smile. “You don't have to do that this time around. Big Bro Mikey's gonna handle it from here, don't you worry. I promise. It's my turn to take care of you guys.”
Whether he understands or not, Mikey's not sure. But if Raph remembers anything from this once the spell breaks or wears off, he hopes it's this:
“You don't have to carry us anymore, Little Big Brother. I got you. We got you.”
Mikey's sure he doesn't imagine Raph trembling in his arms or how Donnie reaches for Raph's hand and squeezes.
~0o0~
Finding Leo takes longer than Mikey's comfortable with. He has half a mind to search the tunnels, but that means either bringing Little Don and Raph with him—absolutely not—or leaving them in the lair to look—even worse, they're toddlers.
Turns out Mikey is overthinking. No matter how old Leo is, he'll always be a Daddy's boy.
He leaves the little two in his room with his hardier fidget toys and softest blankets for Donnie to smother himself with, shuts the door, and makes his way to Splinter's room, where the tell-tale sniffles echo from under their father's bed.
Leo goes ridged when Mikey pops his head under the dusty space, teary eyes wide with a sort of fear they've become familiar with in the months after the Krang. It's scary to see on a teenager's face, and downright awful to see on a baby's face. And Mikey had put it there.
I have to fix this.
He smiles, big and bright, and keeps his distance, settling to lie on his plastron on the cold, damp floor. Leo watches his every move. “Hey, Little Blue,” he says. “It's me, Big Bro Mikey. I'm not gonna touch you if you don't want me to, but I need you to come on out, okay? You really worried me when you ran off like that, bud.”
Leo sniffles, rubbing his blotchy cheeks with the heel of his hand. “... y'shouted at me,” he whimpers. “Called me a p... a p-pesty.”
Mikey almost flinches. “I know, buddy, I know. I'm sorry I shouted and called you a mean name, I shouldn't have done that. I was... a little busy with our brothers and I got a bit upset. But that doesn't mean I should yell or make you feel scared.”
“But,” Leo's lip wobbles, chest heaving as he starts to cry again. “I-I was bein' naughty, and—and I didn't mean to, but I m-made you angry, I'm sowwy, Mikey, don' mean to be a p-pesty, jus wanna help! Jus wanna help, I wanna be a good boy, I'm sowwy—”
It's a hard battle, but Mikey stops himself from crawling under and yanking the kid into his arms. It's harder to keep the tears at bay, though, and one slips down his cheek unbidden as he slowly extends a hand. “Leo. Can I pull you out a give you a hug?”
Leo stares at Mikey's offered hand for longer than he ever has in Mikey's life, and he thinks he deserves it. But it's still Leo, so he takes Mikey's hand and lets himself be pulled out from under the bed and into the circle of Mikey's crushing embrace, nuzzling their tear-stained cheeks as he wails his little heart out.
Good to know that Leo's issues with self-worth started as early as this. Mikey thinks, once this is over, they're due for another long conversation with their father. One Leo will not back out of with jokes and bad humour, Mikey swears on god.
“I swear, Little Blue, none'a that is true,” Mikey says as the kid's sobs ebb into sniffles. His shoulder is damp with tears and snot, but Mikey doesn't care. It's only fair at this point. “You're not a pest, and you're not naughty. You just have so much love and good energy in you that you don't know what to do with it all. Like, you're a bouncing turtle-bunny hoppin' all over the place—like this!”
He jumps to his feet, taking a startled Leo with him, and bounces across the room like a deranged hare, whooping and hollering as he goes over Leo's shrieking laughter. He knocks a few things over as he goes, but he pays them no mind—Splinter might give him an earful later, but that's later, and Leo needs to know now that this is okay. That he is okay.
Mikey throws them onto Splinter's bed, bouncing high enough that Leo shrieks again and grabs Mikey's face for balance, tugging his mask over his eyes. They're both gasping for breath, feeling lighter than where they'd started; Leo's sitting on Mikey's chest, giggling like a little loon, and Mikey adjusts his mask so he can see his signature beam, the glow of innocence in his eyes that doesn't shine quite as bright anymore. Not since he was made leader two years ago, less so after the Krang nearly left him a hollow shell.
So Mikey beams twice as wide and pours every ounce of love into it. “Feeling better?”
Leo nods so hard that his head bounces. “Yeah! That was great, Mike!”
“Good! It's so much fun to bounce, just like what you were doing before. Ain't nothing wrong with being happy and wanting everyone to be happy and bounce with you. That's what you were trying to do, huh?”
A slow, more hesitant nod, but Leo's smile doesn't fade. Not completely. “Jus' wanted to help,” he says, playing and pulling at his fingers like he wants to chew on them; an old habit he and Donnie had at this age that they'd learned to curb. It's cute to see it, even as Mikey carefully guides his hands away from his mouth and pulls him in for another cuddle.
“You're already helping, Leo,” Mikey whispers. “You help just by being here. You are a good boy. You're such a good boy it's actually insane. You're the best brother I could ever ask for, and I've got like four! You're beyond amazing, and until the day you can see it for yourself—really see it—I'll keep reminding you every single day. And I promise I'll never yell at you like that again for something you can't help. No matter how bouncy you are or how many dumb jokes you tell.”
Leo looks at Mikey like he held the moon in his palm. If he asked, Mikey would find a way to make it happen for real.
“You mean it?” Little Leo whispers back. “Really?”
Mikey nuzzles their noses together and Leo giggles. “Really really. That's two really's.”
Leo throws himself at Mikey, and Mikey catches him because it's the easiest thing in the world. He'll catch him as many times as it takes for him to believe he'll never let him fall.
~0o0~
When Splinter, Draxum, April and both Casey's finally arrive, Mikey has them back in the t.v room reading the Wizard of Oz in a pillow fort. Leo and Raph have been asleep in a cuddle pile since the second chapter, while Donnie hangs onto Mikey's every word with shining eyes, sitting on his lap with the book between them.
Mikey pauses to meet their collective gaping with a grin. “Sup, ladies and gentlemen? Care to join us?”
April grins back, pride and relief bright like candlelight in her eyes. Casey Jr looks beside himself with joy at his mentors slash older brothers all baby-fied while Cass toes the line between laughing outright or wanting to hide. Draxum stares with a strange, conflicted look in his eyes, and Splinter already has his phone out, taking pictures and tearing up, sniffing hard.
The sniff draws Donnie's attention. He spins, and his eyes land on Splinter. “Daddy!” he cries, tripping over himself to scramble for the rat, ignoring the other startled adults and teens in the room. “Daddy Daddy Daddy—!”
“My funny little Purple!”
Splinter is a decade older, unable to play with them the way he used to for all his ninja prowess that still leaves them nursing bruises, but he catches Donnie in his arms and the years shed like fur as he spins him around. Donnie shrieks and hollers, kicking his feet and flailing with abandon. The noise rouses Leo and Raph, and they all but tackle their father to the ground, chanting and laughing and shoving each other to get their fill of hugs.
“Hi, papa!” Raph crows, curling up against Splinter like he's not level with the old rat. “Was a good boy t'day! Help Mike 'n Don, an'—an' Angie was lots'a fun! Gave us cookies for snack time and readed a story!”
“Daddy!” Leo buries his snout into Splinter's robe. “Missed you, missed you so much, Daddy! Did'ja miss me, huh, did'ja miss me too, Daddy!”
Splinter laughs, holding all three of them as best he can with them pinning him to the floor. Tears gather in his eyes as he presses kisses atop each of their heads. “I missed you very much, my little Baby Blue,” he says. “I have missed all of you.”
Awww, Mikey thinks as he stands, equal parts soft and heartbroken. Much as their father complained and struggled, it makes sense he'd still miss when they were small enough for him to hold in his arms, to carry and toss about and rock to sleep.
An arm winds around his shoulder and pulls him into a half hug. April kisses his cheek. “Nice job, Big Bro,” she says, winking.
Mikey looks back to the group just in time to see Cass snap a picture of Splinter tickling the daylights out of Leo, with Raph trying to 'save' him and Donnie already moving on to pull at Draxum's robes—“Who are you? E'splain y'self!”
Mikey grins. “Thanks, April.” He lets out a breath and folds his arms. “I learned a lot today, y'know. Seen things from a different perspective. Really made me think.”
April looks at him. “Oh yeah? About what?”
“Being a big brother ain't as easy as I thought. It's a loooot of hard work! I owe these guys big time, especially Raph, for all the times I gave them grey scales and chasms. Dad, too. But at the same time...” He turns to his big sister and smiles. “It was kinda fun, bein' the guy they looked up to for a change.”
April chuckles. “Oh, I bet. Makes you wanna keep 'em all cute like this a little longer before things go back to normal, huh?”
“Oh hell no.”
He grabs April by the shoulders and shakes her, murder in his twitching eyes.
“April. No. It's been hours and I can't take it. Do you know how long it took me to wrangle Donnie from the toaster? Leo used my favourite paint set to drown Donnie's action figures in 'lava'. Raph bit through the freakin' table! I don't wanna be the big brother no more! You know what want, April? You know what I want?!”
April blinks. “Uh—”
“I wanna take a shower. I wanna go to bed forever, right after I kick Hypno's ass back to the rainforest for leaving me with ninety-six pounds of screaming baby turtles for no good reason! That goddamn, big-mouthed, blue gumball, simpleton son of a bitch owes me child support!”
Silence.
It's then that Dr Delicate Touch takes a backseat, and Mikey remembers the younger ears in the room.
Slowly, Mikey and April turn. Everyone is staring with varying degrees of shock, horror and, in Cassandra's case, pride.
Then Little Leo beams, and Mikey feels fear.
“Blue,” Splinter says warningly, “Don't—”
“BITCH!” Donnie cries gleefully. Leo looks at him with all the betrayal a three-year-old can muster.
Raph gasps. “Donnie! No sayin' bitch! Tha's a bad word!”
Donnie pouts. “But Raphie jus' say bitch.”
“I wanna say bitch first!” Leo stomps his foot. “BITCH!”
Draxum and Cass lose it, falling to their knees with heaving laughter. Casey hides his high-pitched giggles behind his hands with little success. Splinter drops his head back with a long sigh, and April looks at Mikey.
Mikey's eye twitches. “Scratch that. I'm killin' the hippo.”

➤ ➤ ➤ PRE-SERIES
The Corner Store by KicsterAsh
12,790 words, 5/5 chapters
Character Focus: Raphael & his brothers, w/ Splinter coming in later
Genre: Fluff, Adventure
“I know what I’m spending my three dollars on,” Raph said. He and Donnie dragged Leo to the machine, which was near the front desk of the store, and sat him down against the wall. “Make sure he doesn’t fall asleep,” Raph said to his other siblings, before rushing to the front desk.
The man, who had been watching them since they dragged Leo into view, looked at the turtle as he ran over. Raph tried ignoring that he noticed this and only looked back once he had reached the counter, where his chin just reached over the top.
“Hello, Mister,” Raph said as politely as he could in his urgency. “How much is a small cup of hot chocolate?”
The man pushed up his glasses and looked at the machine. “It’s two dollars and seventy-five cents after tax,” he said.
“I dunno what tax is, but here.” Raph slapped three dollars down on the counter and then pointed at the machine. “Can you show me how to pour one, please? I’ve never done it before.”
I have such a soft spot for this fic; it was one of the first I ever read for the fandom, and it has the perfect blend of adorable turtle tot hijinks with just enough risk involved to make you concerned and keep the story gripping. To summarize the premise: Splinter lets the boys play topside in the snow while he scavenges for food and supplies, but is gone longer than anticipated. As the hours pass and the temperature drops, a young Raphael decides to break the rules and seek out human shelter to keep his brothers from freezing. All of the turtles’ budding personalities shine through in this story, but good older brother Raph is especially a treat here.
Lost and Found (Family) by ashtreelane
7,007 words, 2/2 chapters
Character Focus: April & Michelangelo, April & The Family
Genre: Fluff, Adventure
"Wow!" April says, her eyes wide with fascination. "Are you some sort of…turtle alien?"
"Yeah! Well- not the alien part, but I am a turtle!“
"So how can you talk?" April asks, leaning in to peek into Mikey's head hole. Her voice echoes slightly in the shell.
"Cause I'm not allllll turtle, duh!" Mikey says, smiling. "Our dad doesn't really like to talk about it, but he says that we’re the product of parental love and ‘unholy sorcery’!
"Oh wow! That’s way more interesting than how I got born!"
After being left behind on a field trip and struggling to find a way home, a young April finds someone just as lost as herself. A charming little story that tells how April met the turtles for the first time.

Character Focus: Splinter & his kids
Genre: Character Study, Family Drama
Hamato Yoshi never wanted kids.
In fact, he found the very idea sickening. The thought of having to care for another life shook him to the core, reminded him of responsibility and clans and forgotten family. Whenever his longest lasting girlfriend (before she turned out to be a giant spider) would tuck a strand of white hair behind her ear and mention the idea of children, sheepishly, a sly grin on her face, he would sputter and make an excuse, change topics, find a way to get out of the situation. Once, drunk, he’d even puked.
The Hamato clan would end with him, he’d decided as a child as he watched his mother disappear into a haze.
And yet life, as always, throws the most vicious of curveballs as he retreats from the crumbling lab with four bundles in his arms and hair sprouting from his legs.
So we can all agree Splinter’s been through some <i>shit</i>, right? Well, this fic decides to unpack all of that, from the loss of his mother, his many one-night-stands and the betrayal of Big Mama, being type-cast as an actor, to his painful mutation and more. The early challenges of fatherhood are where this fic truly shines, though. While it may be incomplete, these four chapters stand well on their own and make for a compelling read.

"You want the lights off, too? Donnie?”
He realizes Donnie probably can't hear him around the headphones and reaches in to lift one of them, repeating the question.
Donnie hums.
"Want some mood music?”
Donnie hums a negative.
"Okay okay, last question, I promise. I'm gonna get my Jupiter Jim comics - want me to read them outloud? I'll do the cool voices!"
Another negative.
"Boooo," Leo says.
Just some vignettes about Leo and Donnie growing up together over the years and looking out for each other. Chapter 3 is set when they’re teenagers, but everything else has been set during their younger years, hence its placement in this category. Each chapter can stand well on its own, and there’s a nice mix of humor and feelings all around.

They’re asking what he is talking about. But what kind of question is that? They’re playing hide and seek, wasn’t that obvious? And Lemon-Lime was being too loud, which could get them found by the person who’s ‘It’, which was the pure opposite of the point of hide and seek.
He tells them such. He tries to explain it all to them to the point that he is running out of breath. But they’re still not getting it. He knows they’re not getting it. But how could Lemon-Lime not, when they were hiding with him in the first place? Instead, they’re asking something else that should be known:
Who is ‘It’?
The world becomes brighter, free of its shadows. The wall in front of them is no longer where it used to be. In its place stands a large, snake-like figure towering over them, blindingly white save for the drifting, purplish, prisms that make up their clothes. Hundreds upon thousands of diamond prisms are embedded into their skin, shifting and melding together before reforming their individual shapes in a never ending cycle as waves of rainbow pulse across their entire body.
They’re familiar. He knows them. They’re ‘It’, he’s certain of it, just as much as he’s certain that the feeling inside of him is disappointment as he tells Lemon-Lime they just lost the game.
Leo plays a deadly game of hide and seek while on an acid trip from hell. Not that he’s aware of that—he’s having a pretty good time. And if he can’t remember who or where he is, much less what he’s lost? It’ll be fine, probably. Don’t worry about it. :)

Leo kneels down, grabbing his brother's wrist, pressing his fingers into the soft skin.
It's still. The room is quiet as he searches.
He can't feel it.
He can't feel his pulse. His heart isn't beating. His baby brother's heart isn't beating.
He hears his breath hitch, he knows his expression must be terrifying.
"Leo." Raph says, his voice pitching up in panic. "Leo, please, please."
Leo doesn't know what he's begging for. Maybe just for Leo not to say it.
Things I didn’t know until I read this fic: box turtles can be frozen alive but still survive, even if their heart stops. Too bad Mikey’s brothers don’t know that! This fic is mean, but an absolute delight if you enjoy your angst with a hope spot.

“How badly did you want her to escape?” Donnie asks in a quiet mumble, eyes fixed elsewhere. “Badly enough for this? To risk-?”
“Yes,” Mikey says without hesitation.
That makes Donnie stutter, mouth twisting in a scowl. He recovers, hissing, “It’s inevitable, Mikey. Draxum is going to beat humanity, and we’re going to help him, this setback is just that. A setback. We’ll get the carriers back, or- or make more, and it will happen. You’ve just prolonged it all, this didn’t change anything.”
“It changed things for her!” Mikey snaps without meaning to. Donnie glares, but he doesn’t cower. “…It changed things for her,” he repeats, calmer.
An AU where Draxum raised the turtles, after capturing them five years after the lab accident. How loyal they are to him varies, however, which comes to a head when a certain human wanders into their base looking for her new pet... All around, this is a great read—I only wish it were a little longer.

“Leo,” Don pushed, voice a rare gentle tone.
Leo glanced at him but said nothing. He seemed almost determined to remain stubbornly silent, and a dark thought crossed Donnie’s mind.
“Leo, why’d you offer to stay back with me?”
Leo shrugged and replied, “Because whatever you were finishing sounded important to you, and Pops wouldn’t have let you stay behind by yourself, and Raph and Mikey have been looking forward to this for weeks. So I volunteered. Why’d you ask?”
When Mayhem goes missing one Thanksgiving when April’s trapped by family and can’t get out of the house, Donnie volunteers to find him. To his surprise, Leo comes as well. What follows is one hell of a chase scene and a look into the two brothers’ relationship; the kind of reflection only acts of extreme violence can bring out.

He wasn't lying when he said he queued this up on a whim, even though it felt like a lie saying it. It really is just that he hasn't seen it in a while! Too long. It always used to be his comfort movie, so that kind of gap of time between viewings is just unbelievable.
…Though, watching it now, with the experience of one-and-a-half-or-maybe-two years under his belt (and the craziest one-and-a-half-or-maybe-two years of his life, at that), he's a bit startled to realize that it isn't quite as comforting as he remembers. He's noticing some things about it he never noticed before, like, well…
Well. The fact that it seems kind of bad, and it's suddenly really hard to like it.
JJ films are always cheesy, that's just a fact of life. What else could you expect from low budget sci-fi made in the mid-20th century? They're cheesy, and wacky, and Leo loves cheesy and wacky, he really does! But he's only now noticing that this film in particular is maybe a little bit too cheesy and wacky. Even though it's obviously trying to be a cool, epic adventure, half the lines are just lame jokes that ruin the atmosphere, and that's not even mentioning how the plot is completely unbelievable, and all because of how weirdly annoying…
…Anyway.
Unable to sleep, Leo decides to watch one of his old favorite movies, but it doesn’t hold up as well as he remembers. Honestly what’s really impressive about this fic, though, is how it showcases elements of Leo’s personality that don’t get addressed in canon until the Rise Movie—despite being written well before its release! The Jupiter Jim film Leo and Donnie watch in the fic is such a perfect mirror for the Krang invasion that I had to check the post date twice, but no, it really pre-dates it. Parts of this story get blisteringly intense, but it’s a great character study delving into Leo’s insecurities, balanced by love and support at the end. A very good read.

“What are you doing?”
Raph flinched, surprised to see his dad in the doorway, though not embarrassed at all at being caught in the middle of his lessons. “Oh, hey Pop! Or- kon'ni chee-wa, otōsan.”
Splinter blinked. “Uh, konnichiwa to you as well, Red. So, you are… learning Japanese?”
“Yeah!” Raph grinned, “I mean, I just started a couple weeks ago so I still got a ways to go, but I think I’m startin’ to get the basics down! Hmph, though, I don’t think I’m gonna be able to write it for a while.”
Splinter chuckled a little. “Hiragana and katakana are not so bad. Now kanji? That is when it can get complicated.”
Raph gave him an incredulous look. “There’s more than one way to write it?!”
Set after the Season 2 finale and with thoughts of family history on the mind, the boys take an interest in their cultural heritage. Splinter gains a new appreciation for how meaningful that can be. This is a sweet fic that’s perfect for anyone who craves content where everyone grows closer as a family.

“Ugh...“ Raph pinched the bridge of his nose while Mikey just giggled. He could already tell that Mikey wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Still, he had to at least try. “Mike, I already told you, I’m just a little tired. I don’t need a special break or anything-”
“Who says you have to need it?” Mikey said simply, dropping all amusement, “Can’t you just enjoy it?” Raph huffed, but didn’t give an answer, instead choosing to look down at the silver wrapper still in his hand.
Leaning forward, Mikey put his hand over his brother’s. “Like you said, things have been rough. This whole situation is just… a lot. But we’ve all been working hard to move through it, especially you! Don’t you think that work deserves a reward?”
Post-S2 Finale, Mikey decides Raph really needs a break after all that stress. What better way to relax than to play with a swarm of puppies and some one-on-one time between the biggest and littlest bros? This fic is a fluffy bonding experience, with cameos from Todd that gave me a good laugh.

It was Donnie's idea to come scavenge for all of his broken (useless) tech, but now he's just standing here staring at the scattered vestiges of what is essentially his life's work. All the time designing and building weapons, and for what?
The Shredder tore through all of it like paper.
(See, he is the funny one.)
Set early in Season 2 after “Many Unhappy Returns”, Donatello throws himself into working on his damaged tech to stave off confronting how affected by the fight he really is. This obviously works perfectly, zero complications. Just ignore the panic attack.

“That’s just rude! I do the dishes at home all the time!”
Hueso maintained his flat stare.
“Okay, some of the time.”
“Hm.”
“Fine! Very, very rarely. But that’s just ‘cause I hate chores, not ‘cause I break them!”
Confession: I love Señor Hueso, he might just be my favorite of the many new characters Rise introduced to the franchise. Imagine my delight, then, when I found this little gem! It’s a charming 4+1 setup featuring Hueso being forced to deal with Leo’s antics until the young turtle grows on him.

“Prepare to meet your ĐǿƠ𝓜, brother.”
The rest of his family looked up.
“Pfffft.” Leonardo rested his chin in his hands. “As if anything you come up with is gonna beat former U.S. President Fillard Milmore and his bumblebeard, let alone me .”
“Millard Filmore,” Donnie corrected. “And honestly, Leon, you ought to cease running your mouth, lest it catch flies~!”
Leo glared. “Alright, that’s enough theatrics. Lay your cards down and we’ll see who the real winner is.”
Donnie laid down his cards.
“See, the thing is,” he said, smugness oozing from his voice, “I agree: I really can’t beat you, Leo. No one can. And that’s why I win.”
Set after the quartet of “Tales of the Hidden City” episodes, this fic is actually more of a response to “Lair Games”—namely, how hard Donnie’s had to struggle to catch up with his brothers, combined with Leo’s propensity to be a poor loser. It’s not all drama, though. The first two chapters are mostly humor-focused, with some incredibly strong dialogue that had me hooting. It’s also not angst for the sake of angst—I really loved where both boys end this fic at emotionally.

“That’s what this is about?” Hypno asked, standing up and dusting himself off, “Aw geez, I didn’t mean to bring up old wounds. I was just trying to rob a bank. You know, low-grade villian stuff!”
The four looked at Hypno, a little dumb struck. Donnie spoke up. “What?”
“I mean, we all went through quite a lot with the alien attack, especially you guys. I thought something light and non-threatening like robbing a bank could get us all back on our feet.” Hypno explained, waving a cloth and somehow making a circular table appear, the cloth acting as a tablecloth. Out of thin air, Hypno pulled out five stools and set them up by the table, then somehow grabbed a teapot and teacups and set them up too. “Tea?” He began pouring.
There are a lot of fics out there tackling how the turtles work through everything the movie put them through, but this one sets itself apart by how episodic it is. I mean that in a good way. There’s continuity between all the chapters, but each one has a different setup and focuses on a different problem. Each of the boys are fully fleshed out here, and there’s some fun cameos. Like Hypno!

The bracelets were haunted—that, or turning 18 had unlocked a whole new meaning to the phrase “twin telepathy.” They entered rooms together, poured milk into each other’s cereal bowls, finished each other’s sentences, which meant the arguments never really ended; they only paused indefinitely until one of them realized they weren’t arguing out loud.
The yokai who sold Leo the bracelets said they amplified strong threads between siblings or friends or lovers; the kind of rare ties only lucky people had. You look the type, she said, and what else could Leo say to that? (The bracelets were also discounted for AAPI month, but Donnie didn’t need to know.)
Ohhh, this fic is an absolute treat. There’s not a lot of fic out there that play with Rise’s mystic elements, which is a shame because it’s one of the strengths of the series. Imagine my delight, then, when I first found this gem and its vivid portrayal of cursed baubles and yokai folklore. It’s a lovely package for the emotional focus of the story, which centers on Donatello and Leonardo growing older and growing apart, and the uncertainty of where that leaves them. This is a must-read.

“Hmph.” Raph still kept his eyes locked on the old wooden table they were sitting at, his father’s compliments just bouncing off him. “Alright, then I’m a bad influence.”
For a long time, Raph has built his identity on being the oldest—the protector who would do anything for the sake of his little brothers. He has a harder time accepting them doing the same for him, though. How do you deal with that?

"I do not want to be in your brain," Leo says, poking at Donnie’s forehead, who swats his hand away. "What am I gonna do if you start on one of your nerd rants? I'm not gonna be able to run away from my own head."
"Wow thanks Leo, and now that I think about it, melding my mind with yours would probably only decrease my overall IQ, and we'd all die the moment we'd have to perform basic arithmetic."
"I would love to have a session with Dr. Delicate Touch and the both of you," Mikey says, serenely, and Donnie and Leo both wisely scoot away from Mikey and closer to each other for safety. "A mind meld would mean no escape for either of you."
"Maintain eye contact, and make slow, careful movements," Leo warns, grabbing Donnie and clinging to him with his one good arm. "Never turn your shell on him."
"Heeey," Donnie says, clinging back to Leo. "How about. Instead of Dr. Delicate Touch. We have a chat with literally anyone else. Like. Dr. Feelings…?"
"Oh!" Mikey says, snapping his fingers. "That's a great idea and you just reminded me. Leo! Let's talk."
In terms of emotional catharsis, this might be one of my very favorites for the Rise fandom. Leo may be the focus character here, but the rest of the family gets a strong showing with top-notch dialogue and meaningful moments. There’s a section where Raph and Leo try a mind meld, and no joke, my heart was so full I cried. Other features of this fic: well-intentioned sibling hijinks with Mikey and Donnie with the kind of banter that could be taken from the show, as well as a thoughtful heart-to-heart with Casey. And don’t even get me started on Splinter’s section; that made me cry again. Twice, with this fic! As for Leo himself? I don’t say this lightly (because there’s SO many good fics out there tackling this subject), but this might be one of the most satisfying portrayals of how he comes to confront his mistakes and trauma. Honestly I could gush for days about this fic, I can’t recommend it enough.

On the news, New York was rebuilding. Why couldn’t they do the same? And when was the last time they showed the lair a little love?
“Far too long,” Donnie agreed, his first words after weeks; the whole family went quiet to fish-gape at him. Post-Kraang, the adrenaline swirled out of his system and Donnie had clammed up. Nothing but the mechanical churr from his lab for days. "What?” He blinked. “Well? What are we working with here?”
Raph cleared his throat. "Guys?"
Splinter raised his hand.
“Dad, I cannot replicate your favorite Hollywood suite," Donnie said blearily. "If you haven’t noticed, we live in a sewer. I cannot build you a veranda with a lake view."
Huffing, Splinter lowered his arm.
The family copes with the aftermath of the invasion with some home renovation! It goes about as well as you’d expect, and may or may not be a metaphor for how not well they’re dealing with it. Strong hurt/comfort, with a healthy dash of hijinks.

“Mikey? Mikey, you okay?”
“Orange, what’s wrong?”
“Master Michelangelo?”
He couldn’t answer, couldn’t say anything, too focused on trying not to cry.

“Think about it. You feel like you have something to prove, which is unnecessary but your feelings are acknowledged nonetheless, and I feel like I… Also have something to prove. If we can beat these guys, just the two of us, we’ll have nothing else to prove to ourselves, right?”
About time we reached some adventures with the B-Team! "Sensei, are you okay? You went still for a moment," the boy noted softly, eyebrows furrowing together in concern. His clothing left much to be desired as well, consisting of brown rags and mismatched patches of colour and thread, each equally covered in dust from the wind.
Leo opened his mouth to ask who he was, where they were, but something else left his mouth entirely.
"I'm alright, Casey. Just tired after scouting.”
His right hand (he didn’t move it, he wasn’t moving it, he wasn’t in control,) reached out to pat the boy—Casey, it seemed—gently on the shoulder.
There was almost a detached amount of horrified interest as Leo watched his arm reach out. Or rather, watched not his arm, but… Raph’s arm?
Figuring out which category to put this fic in was a struggle. Technically it’s set weeks before the movie is set—though it’s plot will surely see it catch up to the events of the invasion—yet huge, important sections of it detail the events of the apocalypse timeline, and— WELL. Can you see my struggle?? Even so, this fic has a intriguing setup, and is well worth the investment. The premise? Long before things are meant to go wrong, Leo starts to experience his future self’s memories and has no idea what to make of it. These memories become harder and harder to dismiss, but it’s unclear what they mean just yet, or what changes will come about as a result.

"Greetings, you rebellious insects. I have a special show for you today," Kraang said to the camera.
Of course Kraang understood how to demoralize people, he was too smug to not know-
"It seems one of your leaders finally came out of his shell," he said, the cameras moving to focus on Donatello, and he hated how he saw fear on his face. He hoped that it wasn't so clear to everyone else, that the wideness of his eyes, the clench of his jaw seems more like determination than terror.
His family would know the truth though.
"It was quite the plan he had to try and hurt the Kraang. A virus to disrupt our systems. I'll admit, I didn't expect any of you to be smart enough to figure out how to do that," Kraang said coolly and pulled up Jeremy's body. "Would you like to tell them what you did, hero? The cost of your little program?"
Donnie looked at Kraang. Then at the camera. He still had his plan. He still had his plan.
This is another one of those fics where each chapter stands fairly well on its own. I don’t know if the author intends to continue it, but the first chapter alone dug its hooks in me with its tale of Donatello’s last stand—and his farewell to Leo, Mikey, and April. It pumped me up and broke my heart all in one go; that alone would be enough to get it on this list, but the second chapter is fairly strong as well, detailing the family’s first encounter with the Krang, in the timeline where Casey wasn’t there to assist, and haha, it hurts. But in the best of ways.

“So, what’d he do? Help dye Shelldon’s hair behind you back? Switched your toothpaste with glue?”
“Leo.” Donnie-boy says again, this time with the kind of exhaustion usually reserved for post-battle failed surgery. Turning to look at him, Don’s face is ragged, haunted, too much like... when Dad died.
Sitting up properly, Leo regards him. “Don?”
“He-” Cutting himself off, that deep-set anger returning to Donnie’s eyes. After a moment, he huffs, though it’s closer to a snarl, and flings his hands into the air. “It’s all this stupid mystic bullshit! We never should’ve gotten involved with it. We were fine before, and now-”
“Donnie. What’s he done?”
“It’s what he wants to do that’s the problem.”
The idea to use a timegate comes long before we see Michelangelo use it in the movie—long before the end. In the face of that, Leo makes him a deal. A nice look on the history of the bad timeline, and who else was lost long before the turtles were reduced to a duo.

So you’re making your own TMNT iteration. Here’s how to get started:
1. Choose who will be the comic books guy
1. This is usually Mikey but variance is allowed!
2. Comic books guy should have other unrelated nerdy intetests, ie Anime, horror films, unicorn onesies
3. Keep in mind at least one of the other bros should find this lame and obnoxious. Bonus points if they are a hypocrite
2. Place your Baxter Stockman on the “snobby wet cat” to “serious threat” scale. This will severely impact the way your plot develops.
3. The following characters, if included, are either friend-shaped or out for blood:
1. Leatherhead
2. Bishop
3. Utrom
4. Frogs
4. Customize your April! Choose her age, appearance, and backstory!
Backstory 1: turtles saved her life when she was running through the sewers to escape a serious threat, probably mousers
Backstory 2: she feels like a loser in school so she just made friends with these sewer creatures
5. Set the emotional intelligence meters on your Raph and Mikey
1. One of them has to be completely tactless
2. They both can be
3. One of them should be extremely empathetic to the point where it causes plot
4. They both can be
6. Customize your Splinter! Choose his species (original), connection to Hamato Yoshi, and parenting style
Parenting style 1: his life revolves around his kids, if he made mistakes he did it with love
Parenting style 2: his life revolves around his past with Shredder and his children are weapons for his battles
Parenting style 3: his soaps are on
7. Place your Shredder on the “babygirl” to “force of nature” scale. This will have minimal impact on your plot.
Congrats! You’ve completed stage 1! Take a breather, explore your style, daydream about what kinds of pizza toppings your boys like. In stage 2 we’ll be getting into the nitty gritty details, like Karai’s relation to Shredder, how Splinter actually learned ninjitsu, and yes, the unavoidable question, did any of the boys ever have a crush on April and if so how did that pan out. Relax while you can.
At this point some of you are wondering, shouldn’t I have decided on a tone? Is my iteration going to be silly or serious? Well, don’t worry! We’ll cover that in stage 4, right after we figure out how you plan to incorporate time travel.
