get in losers: we’re gonna watch a Thai BL drama

OKAY. So I’ve finally finished subbing all of 2gether (”Huh? It was already available for free online with official English subs.” you say, and I say, “Yes but those subs were like...very Not Good. And this series deserves Good Subs. Also they were packed with commercials and these are not!”), and the time has come FOR ME TO FORCE YOU ALL TO WATCH IT.

What do I do when I want to introduce new ppl to my latest interest? Host a watch party of course!

Now, I know you’re curious wtf this series is about, so have my short and sweet summary:

Tine's a chic, hot first-year at his university, a star performer on the cheerleading squad and super stylish--so why is it so hard for him to find a girlfriend? No one seems to be a fit for him, and to make matters worse, now he's being chased around by a gay guy, convinced he can be The One for Tine. Desperate to shake his cringe-worthy suitor, Tine decides that to beat 'em, he'll have to join 'em, and enlists the aid of the brooding campus hottie Sarawat: Together, they'll pretend to be boyfriends just long enough to shake Tine's would-be paramour so he can get back to his search for true love. Faking being in love should be easy, right?

tl;dr - Fake dating, hell yeah. That never ever leads to real dating, psh.

SOUNDS LIKE A HOOT, HUH? Well you’re right, it is! It’s absolutely ridiculous but very endearing and full of attractive people. At 12 episodes for Season 1 (there’s a shorter Season 2 that I’m in the process of subbing), it won’t be a long commitment, so let’s DO THIS.

Tentative Start Date/Time: Saturday August 21, 11 PM EST. We’ll watch 2 episodes at a time, since that’s late for US folks.

This time slot is semi-flexible, so if a bunch of people have a different slot preference, drop a request! Friday nights US time aren’t possible, but Sunday nights at an earlier slot are.

Okay, the cursed episode is coming and I just finished watching this weeks DSN episode. I’m so annoyed. Like, we knew it was coming, but this feels out of character for Leo. Like… wtf? I just.. Okay, obviously there’s a reason, but he was clenching his fists, so blackmail, maybe? But if that’s the case then what would it be? Even then, does it have to do with that phone call King made? Cause if King is going to be the entire reason behind this whole thing, I’m going to be way too frustrated. I want Fiat to figure out what’s going on, this is obviously hurting both of them, but I mean, it’s Leo and Fiat. I don’t know if I can expect a good, happy ending with what may be coming in this next episode. Also, is this “Ball” thing going to happen or is it just a conversation starter for the girl and Leo? A bad one, but I wonder if it will be a scene or not. I don’t think I’m going to be able to watch next weeks episode, I may have to wait it out until I know the ending because I don’t know what’s coming. I’ll see what we more get on Wednesday, but they are coming to shatter our hearts with that fight in the preview.

On the other hand, Leon and Pob actually stole my heart this week. Holy crap they were adorable! I was honestly not sure about them, but wow they are so freakin’ adorable.

Is DSN the series serious with their ep 11 curse drama ? It’s Leo that mess up which is not only totally out of character but so random. The real Leo will push her away immediately. They are doing the exact same thing 2gether did with Sarawat where he suddenly became passive and cold with Tine when he has been the exact contrary during the major part of the show for the sole reason of creating a drama. It’s infuriating I feel like they just threw away Leo’s character. They ruined everything

But anyway I highly assume there is some blackmailing reason behind it; especially since she said their families are close. She admitted to liking him in the preview so maybe she wants him to pretend to be her bf in front of her family or whatever. Idk. I think MeMindY said on Twitter that it will be cleared up next episode. I don't know if we're gonna see the Ball thing but if it's just gonna be drama between the families and them pretending to be together then they can keep it 😂

And I don't think King is behind it. I think he wants to sabotage the game or something? So I think his intentions are unrelated. But I could be wrong.

@ anon 2: Yes it looks like they will not spare us from the cursed episode 11 but so be it. I rolled my eyes so much at that last scene but not because I'm freaking out but because it's literally pointless. I still trust them with my life so I know it's gonna be fine. It might be super shallow and I wish they had picked a different kind of last minute conflict but oh well. So before you say they ruined everything and threw away Leo's character, let's just wait it out 😉

Hi everyone!!👋 I am back with a super messy review this!! I am not kidding about it being super messy!!. The last episode for Still2gether😭! I am going to miss my boys 😭

Aww they are going on a trip to celebrate their success!! I love trips!! (also i wouldn’t mind going on a trip with Win👀) ahum anyway... lol Boss & Man are seriously the funniest. I can’t help but laugh at everything they do together. Phukong and Mil are also a couple and I’m all for it!! (also lets be honest, they are just perfect together, i love them in their other show as well!)

There we have the main couple. UGH why so handsome together, how is this even fair. 😫 I love them...they are just so damn handsome! (Side note: I AM IN LOVE WITH TINE’S SMILE)

also why always so cute with each other, i mean Wat taking care of Tine, is just too cute, Like can someone take care of me like that!!! I love this little flashback of tine where he consults his friends but seriously, he really is using the “I’m asking for a friend” Method🤦‍♀️ oh dear Tine that never works 🤦‍♀️ I do have to say that I love Fong and his awesome ideas and Ohm, making me laugh with his “18+ activity on the beach” 🤣 His friends are golden!!

I’m so happy Wat didn’t forget about their anniversary, at least I think that’s what he meant, right!! because what else should he remember! You know who I seriously get annoyed by!! DIM!! hello !! trust me , you are not the only one who thought it was shitty - me and many of my friends did as well . soooo , in no particular order ( or rather in order of how i remembered it ) , me being the literal embodiment of a crying emoji :

pam ? so , what was that exactly ? gods , she was such a great character in the books , and they did her so dirty . she knew about tine and sarawat the whole time ? ah man , there is nothing i hate quite like people who interfere in other people’s relationships . yikes !

wat’s recording for pam ? ok that was the weirdest shit on planet earth . did wat give it to her saying it was the song , and then she just comes home , plugs the flash drive into her laptop and hears “ GET RECKT LOSER IM FUCKING GAY “ ? like that doesn’t make any fucking sense ... ( tho it is kinda funny kgjdflkgjlsfkgjsok )

wat not visiting tine in the hospital ? my guy , are you fucking joking rn ... ur telling me that SARAWAT didn’t try to reach out to his boyfriend and make sure he was alright , when he was taken to a literal fucking hospital ? oh yeah , i guess he just calmly slept through the night like in episode 12 :)

boss and pear ? excuse moi , what was that ... i DETEST it when they put characters together last minute “ just for the sake of it “ . boss and pear have zero fucking things in common , have they even interacted in the show at all ???? bitch y’all on crack rn , i swear to gods ...

the only and last good moment of sarawatine in this episode not being private ? maybe this is just my personal opinion , but i didn’t like it ... the symbolism of them finishing things at the music club a year later is cute , but you could’ve at least fucking given them a second in privacy ?? you could’ve had a scene after the concert where tine returns back to their home or something , where they just fucking TALK , and THEN the final scene would be a short scene in the music club ( it felt kind of dragged out anyway ) . wrong decision :/

phukong and mil ? mil first treated phukong like dirt and then repeatedly went after tine , and phukong was literally like “ ok :( but if it doesn’t work out will you keep your heart open for me :( “ like that’s not healthy , WTF ? anyone deserves better . mil has been an asshole this entire time , literally treating tine like an object - that dickhead did NOT deserve a good ending , and phukong certainly deserves better than that shit .

us just spending the whole episode wrapped up in drama ? eeeh me no likey . not only was the whole episode dramatic , it was unnecessarily dramatic with wat still being ooc most of the time . it ain’t it chief !

man and boss suddenly not being there for wat ? one of the best things about this show has always been our beautiful dynamic trio . man and boss have literally been there for wat since day one my dudes , and now tine and him are basically broken up , wat can’t fucking do anything he feels so broken , AND WE DON’T SEE THEM THERE ? oi fuck off !

the sudden lack of communication ? oh, so now we just don’t speak , like at all . the most frustrating but also the easiest way to create drama has always been miscommunication - this could be fixed by one (1) single conversation , but NO OH NO SIR , we want the drama ! so they just don’t fucking talk ! insane , especially because episode 11 has JUST taught us that they communicate and tell each other everything .

the amount of flashbacks ? believe it or not , i don’t have amnesia . and i think an overwhelming amount of viewers doesn’t either . we remember what happened my dudes , and i understand wanting to show the character reminiscing , but we don’t need THAT many examples of them doing that . we got it ! he is remembering their time together ! maybe you could use all the fucking time you wasted on flashbacks on something of actual fucking substance , eh ?

the dreaded kissing question . i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again - the fact that some people just don’t want to kiss or aren’t ready to kiss is perfectly normal and an important thing to talk about , HOWEVER , you are fucking delusional if you think this is why we didn’t get any mutual kisses in 2gether . they didn’t have any problems making wat kiss tine when he DEFINITELY wasn’t ready a million fucking times , but when they got into an actual relationship ? nope , no kisses . because gmm is still uncomfortable with showing kisses between men and we NEED to talk about it !

so yeah , needless to say i didn’t like it very much . in fact , i can count the amount of moments i liked in the finale using the fingers of just one of my hands . extremely disappointing , frustrating and underwhelming . actually really sad about this one , lads .

Okay so I was rewatching a tincan edit in youtube and there were these comments talking shit about tincan and how the actors could had done better honestly wtf Like they have done everything they could and the details, like they are saying they are not good with the kissing scenes)? Like in many other bl series, characters dont kiss much like sarawat and tine for example , I am just so over this. Like sex scenes are not that necessary and the way people keep wanting this is so stupid

I literally just read a comment today like “TinCan half ass the kissing scenes but TulHin just eat each other up why couldn’t we have that” It’s like hey man gotta give TulHin something since the rest of their relationship is a garbage fire fjdgjkdfhg (I am joking, please don’t come at me). But honestly like... wtf??? I would much rather sacrifice a good kissing scene for a good story than the other way around. TulHin didn’t get the detailed storyline they deserved but TinCan did, and I personally have adored seeing the ups and downs of their relationship so freaking much.

I wish people would acknowledge that every couple is different. To portray every on-screen couple the same way would be to do injustice to the multitude of couples in existence. I know couples who act gooey and smoochy with each other even after many years of marriage, while some couples are the type to act more platonic in public and more sweet in private and others like to playfully insult each other to show affection... it doesn’t make one less valid than the other and it’s stupid that people cannot see that.

One thing I have seen is that people think the TinCan chemistry is lacking in this season which like... I personally do not agree, but is a valid complaint. I think it’s just that because they had this sort of hatred for each other in season one which isn’t there in season two, the chemistry is different. Like sure it isn’t as ‘electric’ in a lot of ways, but I would rather have toned-down chemistry if they are also a healthy couple??? Like I love TharnType ok? I really do. They have mad chemistry, but they also have moments where I am concerned for the characters and whether their relationship is the healthiest. I was scared TinCan would come across the same way and I was so happy to see that they didn’t. I’m not here to compare one ship to the other, I do love both ships, it’s just that TinCan are different from TharnType and TunHin and so they obviously act differently.

Anyway I have decided to tune the haters out. We got our TinCan spinoff season and we loved it so we are the real winners here

hi so ive been studying thai cultures of sexuality and gender for my (kind of not really) college thesis and obviously my research had been little limited because of the lack of english papers on the subject (so !! if you're thai and LGBT+ PLS correct me) but one thing that i've been wrestling with in criticisms of this show is how people have rallied against wife/husband discourse because it feels like a very Eurocentric look at how people express their sexualities. (And +

this comes from someone who hates top/bottom + wife/husband gendering myself!) Thai conceptions of gender/sexuality don’t really fit into the categories of LGBT(+) as easily as believed, especially since the terms people used can often differ based on the sexuality and gender of WHO they’re attracted to and also on the presentation of gender rather than what people feel they are! +

(Also the word phet means both gender AND sexuality, meaning there is not often a distinction between gender/sexuality and boy can you tell I have nothing to do with my time) Which is oh my god confusing but to give an example, when gay was first introduced as an identity marker people began to refer to themselves as “gay kings” v “gay queens” based on which dude was the sexually receptive partner. +

Lesbians are also gendered in a similar format: “tom” tends to refer to butch lesbians (and can sometimes be seen as part of the overarching kathoey third gender) and “dee” refers to femme lesbians. To clarify, I am Indian-American and therefore would solidly punch someone in the face if they tried to classify me and my (nonexistent lol) partner as the “wife” v “husband,” +

especially when the roles you take in bed become an essential part of how you communicate your identity within the gay community. In the states, you can call yourself a lesbian without having to qualify how butch or how much of a top you are, in Thailand the words themselves inherently hold that connotation. Not saying its right, but there is cultural precedent that I think is interesting to explore in asking WHY this trope is so common. +

I know there have been certain shows that have had characters say that they are bi/gay (ie. Mean’s character from UWMA, Ohm’s character from HCTM) but these are not words that originated from Thailand itself, they are loan words from English. That’s not to say they’re invalid in any aspect, but that DOES say that while people who do fall into gay/bi categories may have existed, there was little/no direct translation for these words in thai until the 1960s. +

When gender and sexuality are not considered distinct categories but are rather all lumped under the term “phet,” it is therefore Hard in Thailand to lump people together as ie. Bi without having an additional sex and gender qualifier in the term. “Seua bai” (which means bi tiger and wtf why is that SO cool) refers to /masculine/ bi men, but seau bai are also not seen as completely male because, +

again, seau bai as a phet implies that they are not 100% phu chai - male - which really only refers to heterosexual men. SO while I would love to see tine/sarawat say that they are bi/gay, I’d also equally love for them to express that they are bi/gay with terms inherent to thai, bc I think that offers a really interesting perspective to int fans (and straight thai fans who are unaware) on how gender/sexuality can be different in other cultures. +

They could also offer criticism on these terms if they feel too narrow, which would be really valuable coming from thai writers/producers themselves. Anyway I thought this would be good food for thought, and if LGBT+ thai people have different perceptions PLEASE talk about it if you feel comfortable bc your experiences and knowledge are very valuable and appreciated! ah thank you so much for this! i have been wondering about this as well recently as more east asians have been speaking up about sexuality and gender in their cultures and how that doesn’t coincide with how westerners express their sexuality and gender. i mean, there are terms that overlap (in indian culture, we have some of those as well, but then we also have hijra and thirunangai and thirunambi in tamil culture) but there are some words exclusive to thai culture specifically. this was great food for thought and i’ll be more careful in the future when it comes to expressing my thoughts on terms for sexuality in bl shows.

i think it would be really interesting to see these terms used and criticised, if need be, by actual thai lgbt writers and producers. it would be nice to see more of thai culture paid homage to in shows like these and to see the search for labels or terms that fit oneself, i know that has been hard for me personally considering english terms as well. the way we perceive gender and sexuality tends to be very eurocentric and sometimes we need to realise that we need to see things through a different lens and the influence of culture and society on the reason why a lot of these characters don’t use fixed english loan words to describe themselves. this was a super interesting read, thank you! i should have educated myself on it earlier as i got more into this fanbase, but thank you so much for coming along and providing us this information :’)

furthermore i think it would be interesting, as you said, to get input from actual lgbt thai people on this! so if you are lgbt and thai, feel free to send me an ask talking about your experiences and journey with terms and labels, both thai and english, if you feel the want to. y’all always have a platform here with me and i will try my best to provide my insight as well if asked or needed, be respectful, and listen! your knowledge and inputs are very much appreciated, especially when it comes to shows like these and the sometimes unfair criticism they get from people with a western-centric point of view.

yeah I mean Sarwatine might be extremely popular but they also polarize lol. I’d say the majority of ppl like them but there is also a good amount of ppl who say they’re overrated and don’t have chemistry. I guess I understand both sides; I love them for their sweetness and they do have a lot of chemistry imo. But people aren’t wrong when they say that they’re lacking a bit of that romantic/desire spark which makes them seem more like a bromance-couple. So I get why people criticize them but some are def too harsh and even though I get where they’re coming from, ST do not deserve actual hate I mean wtf.

just some thoughts(tm) on the 2gether finale/series as a whole...

(btw this isn’t a rant cos i don’t actually hav anythin to properly rant about to do w/ 2gether... it’s not entirely positive tho so be warned lol)

1st thing - it wasn’t as bad as some people were sayin it was (i saw a lot of complaints and i was like uh oh is it gonna b a mess?? but it was actually p good)... was v glad it didn’t end on a sad note, would rly have put a damper on the rest of the series tbh

2nd thing - manxtype were adorable (yes i’m giving them their own category, they deSERVE it cos i LOVE them)... only minor complaint is ‘why was type crying at the meditation resort thing?!? what is his angst?! why didn’t he trust man at first?! gimme answers!!’

3rd thing - who keeps giving drake & frank the worst storylines??? like for real?? even if mil’s character wasn’t rly annoying thru 80% of the series, the way they got together was just kinda terrible lol (like ... ur tellin me he was that desperate to be with eyebrows mcgee that he’d accept that he was technically he 2nd choice??!? wtf kinda bs is that lol??)

4th thing (ties into the issues w/ the 3rd thing too kinda) - pacing for the last couple eps was p bad... it esp is annoying since the rest of the series had rly great pacing imo? (i’m a sucker for the slow burn kinda shiz lol) and the final and everything was just kinda really rushed & it rly stood out as a glaring difference from the rest... i think a way around this could hav been either removing a lot of the new elements introduced in ep 12 altogether, or introducing them a lot earlier (so introducing a character like pam throughout the series, rather than just slapped on in the end u kno??)

5th thing - i don’t care that they didnt kiss as a couple... like, i know so many people r annoyed about this but i honestly don’t mind... llike it’s a lil weird to hav a supposed couple not kiss, but like it didn’t take away from my enjoyment, esp when u hav brightwin lookin @ eachother w/ the softest and tender looks ever & saying the sweetest things...

6th thing - sarawat’s song for tine was beautiful and i got emosh listening to it

7th thing - kinda wish we got a closer glimpse into how tine feels about sarawat... like we know he loves him, obv, but i’d rly hav loved to see him return the song favour w/ something else u know? (maybe if we get a 2nd series they’ll do this lol...??)

8th thing - tine’s friends are amazing!! one of my fav things bout these series is the way they portray the importance of friendship! (it would hav been great if tine had liSTENED to them once in a while tho lool... tho i can’t hold that against him, i never listen to anyone lol)

final thing - on the whole, this series was good... it could have been great, if the last few eps had kept up w/ the quality of the first half of the series... but it was a fun watch & it was actually really beautifully filmed thru most of the series too! plus i loved the focus on music!

another thing i gotta say is that i really think this show doesn’t deserve the excessive negativity it’s getting... like most of the comments on the final on yt r really harsh, and i get it, people r disappointed... it’s no excuse to be mean tho... idk... i just think that people has an idea of what they wanted from the final in their head and it didn’t live up to that so they’re mad?

overall, i’d rewatch most of the series, tho probs not the final few eps...

Wow, it’s been a phat minute since I’ve done one of these (I went on vacation, lost interest in UWMA and then COVID hit so wow lmao).
