Bucciarati - My little Seastar
Sister reader. Enjoy~
"Hey, Bucciarati! Can you help me for a sec?"
You turned towards the direction of the voice calling you and stopped in your tracks on the wooden docks.
"What do you want, Valentino?" You spat, a bit more harshly than intended.
The smug boy who was crouched on his zodiac chuckled at you. "Aw, come on, Bucciarati! Don't be like that. I just need some help to tie the rope. Your dad is a fisherman, right? You should know knots like no one else!"
Even though he had said this as a way to woo you and flatter you somehow, you couldn't help but hear it as a condescending remark. You crossed your arms over your chest and he pouted at the glare you sent him.
"Pretty please~? No funny business, I swear! Look, the guys aren't even here, I'm all alone. You can trust me!"
That's right. Valentino and his little gang took great pleasure in teasing you and bothering you at every corner and it pissed you off. No matter how much you insulted them, ignored them or avoided them, they never seemed to stop their stupid and useless bullying.
But sadly, oh so sadly, the Bucciarati that you were was kind. Too kind. You despised that you were so gentle-hearted, but in the end, this is how your father and brother had raised you.
You huffed and slumped your arms loose along your body, defeated. "Fine!" You dragged your sandals over the dock and approached him. "It better be quick."
The boy beamed as you embarked on the zodiac next to him, "Sure thing! Thanks a lot, girl. I'll make it up to you!"
He gave you the ropes as you crouched down at his place and got to work. But without you noticing, the boy had swiftly slid his leg over the vehicle and easily jumped back into the dock, leaving you behind.
Before you could even turn around and ask where he was going, the brat, now accompanied by all three of his little buddies that appeared out of their hiding spot, all kicked the zodiac off of the dock before you could even tie it.
"Waah-!"
You lost balance at the violent jerk of the boat and yelped, letting go of the ropes that could have saved you from your demise.
You couldn't even get back to your knees and try desperately to grab onto the dock's wooden planks. You heard the boys snickering and laughing at you as you drifted farther and farther away from the land into the water.
"I fucking knew it you disgusting piece of TRASH!" You yelled at them, angry with them obviously, but also angry with yourself for granting that bastard the benefit of the doubt. "You know damn well I can't swim!"
They all seemed to laugh even louder, obnoxiously. "Too bad for you Bucciarati! Maybe you shouldn't be so stupid next time! BWAHAHAHA!"
"YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE VALENTINO! SCREW YOU!"
Your curses and wails seem to fall into deaf ears as you drifted even farther away from the coast, with no way of even paddling back.
Looking around towards the much bigger boats parked along the docks, you could only hope 'he' would hear you.
"PAPA!! PAPAAA!!!" You called desperately. Surely he would hear you, he wasn't far after all, you did come all the way here to bring him his lunch. He must still be somewhere around the fishing boats.
After a few more vain attempts to call for your father, you settled to accept that he wouldn't hear you, nor would the other fishermen that were already far gone from their boats to bring their catches to land.
You sat on the damp zodiac and brought your knees to your chest, not even caring if your sundress slid down your thighs indecently and got stained by the salty water. Stupid Valentino couldn't even keep his tiny boat clean.
"Stupid, stupid..." Your voice cracked, threatening to break into a sob. "If he was a sailor he'd be dead before even sailing. That's how stupid this stupid boy is. Stupid."
With only your expletives to reassure you in your demise, you buried half of your face in your arms now craddling your cold knees.
Everything was so silent, the sea did a great job at muting every sound around the coast and you felt the loneliest and most scared you had ever been since you were a child.
You thought nobody would find you, and you'd be dead drowning because you could never learn to swim and since nobody even noticed your absence in minutes that felt like hours, nobody would cry for you if you died here either.
And so the stinging tears prickled at your eyes.
"Y/N?" You heard a familiar voice calling your name, but brushed it off as the wind. "Y/N is that you?"
You looked up towards the insistant voice in a sliver of hope and, like an angel fallen from heaven, you were met with the caring blue gaze of your big brother from the railings of one of the high boats right next to where you had drifted to.
"Bruno!" You gasped and got up immediately, almost falling over from the sudden sway of the boat under your weight. "A-ah! Bruno help me, I'm stuck!"
"Hold on!" The worried face of the male hesitated to leave you for even a split second. "I'm coming down. Don't move."
You nodded at his strict tone and waited for him as he disapeared. Your breath caught in your throat with stress, even though you were reassured to finally have a savior. And what a savior it was, your one and only big brother.
Barely a minute passed before you saw him come back and unravel an emergency ladder down to you. He made sure the ladder was all tight and secure and almost immediately after, Bruno jumped over the railing, to your grand fright, and started climbing down, your heart pounding with worry for him.
He finally arrived down and stepped into the zodiac, joining you, like a glorious hero, saving the day. You barely let him any time to react as you threw yourself into his chest and gripped viciously at the back of his shirt, scrunching it without care, scared to be alone at sea again.
Bruno wanted to scold you and yell at you for recklessly playing around all alone in the docks and ending yourself in such a dire situation. But when he felt you trembling and squeezing him like your life depended on it, which ironically it did, the elder couldn't help but sigh and wrap his long arms around your shoulders, a gesture of comfort.
"... What happened to you?"
"It's-" You choked a sob and Bruno tutted and shushed you softly, patting your head to calm you down, just like your mother used to do when you were a child.
"Shhh, it's okay bambina, I'm here now."
He felt you relax and you sniffled a few times before mumbling into his shirt. "It's Valentino! He tricked me! I hate him! He's such a coglione!"
"Hey! Language." He scolded and pinched your arm, earning a little 'ow' from you, "What would dad think if he heard you say such words? Bite your tongue, young lady."
"S-sorry..." You croaked a little ashamed of your outburst and lifted your head up at your brother. "They always do this to me... Valentino and the others... Why...? They know I can't swim and they throw me into the water all the time..."
Bruno let go of you to cup your face and wipe your tears off. He did not let it show to you but he was infuriated. There was only so much patience an Italian man could have when his family was being targeted. Especially his little sister and the only lasting woman of his life.
"Shh, stop crying now, mia stellina marina. I'll deal with them later, okay? Let's get you home for now."
"They'll see." You sniffled as your breath steadied, calmed by Bruno's soft tone, "When I'll marry a big, tall, goth policeman, he'll beat them up for me and then, they won't act so cocky anymore."
He huffed with amusement at your words before he let you go and laid a gentle hand on your back to usher you towards the ladder.  Bruno, still with a bit of confusion, mumbled to himself without you hearing it.
"... Why goth, though?"
Only now had you noticed the zodiac had stopped drifting since Bruno found you, held onto the much bigger boat by a phantom blue and white arm and a golden zipper that you'd recognize from a mile away.
"Can we... Can we let the zodiac in here?" You asked hesitantly towards your brother who paid no mind to it.
"Who cares? It's not ours."
With thoughts of Valentino's expensive motorboat getting lost in the sea, you slowly took ahold of the ladder's ropes and started climbing, Bruno keeping it steady for you until he was sure you embarked in safely.
He then joined you up and lent you a spare jacket that he thankfully thought of taking with him in the morning, covering you from the cold of your drenched dress against the littoral wind.
"Thank you Bruno..." You softly uttered and hugged his warm jacket closer around you, "I always cause you trouble..."
"Nonsense, piccolina. I could never live knowing my sister is crying, cold and afraid somewhere." He squeezed your shoulder against him as you approached the stall your father and his colleagues were filling with freshly caught fishes. "I'll make sure you're the one that never gets troubled again..."
Fortunately for you, the day ended much more peacefully than it had started and your father was happy and relieved to find you safe and uninjured. He had specifically instructed Bruno to not get involved or make a scene, but of course, his son was a stubborn mediterranean who could not let anything just slide.
It was not the first, not the second, nor even the third time this boy, 'Valentino' and his friends, had taken offense towards you.
So, Bruno would make sure the zodiac Valentino had worked oh-so-hard to afford, part-timing as a waiter, cleaning after people's messes, scrubing disgusting shit-stained lavatories and cutting his hands off of plastic and metal scraps scattered along the beaches for a few cents per day, got thoroughly anihilated to pieces.
"NOOOO!!!! MY ZODIAC !!!! MY 50 000€ BAAABYYYYYY!!! WHYYYYY???!!"
The very next day, as you walked along the docks to bring some fishing materials to your brother, you heard the painful wails of a very familiar boy kneeling down and crying on the woodplanks, his screams echoing against the shore.
"SHUT UP BRAT! You'll think about your money after you pay for the fines I'm about to give you. You think you can get away with polluting the water with your gross ass wreckage?" A tall and burly policeman wearing purple lipstick growled at the kneeling boy, no signs of mercy in his baritone voice. "You'll have a reason to cry when you pay for the oil you spilled in here. You're lucky I'm not throwing your ass in jail right now."
"Officer please-" Valentino pleaded miserably, but the policeman did not hold back on pushing all fives of the different citations he had owned by having pieces of his zodiac scattered all around the precious ressourceful ocean.
"You have two weeks to pay up and clean all that shit." The officer fixed his shades over his nose before turning around to leave. "And expect to receive a salty lawsuit soon. Fucking whiny bitchbaby..."
The policeman left with a determined and impatient step as you witnessed the entire scene with wide eyes, not noticing your brother approaching.
"Oh no... That's horrible..." You gasped with sympathy and worry, "I hope the fishes and corals won't get impacted by the oil spill..."
"Oh don't worry," Bruno chuckled, taking the heavy loads off your hands, "I made sure to zip that out of the water."
You blinked, confused.
"...What?"
"What...?"
That fic was inspired by the very first scene of H2O, I love that show so much, and I can't wait to post my mermaid fics in store!

Words Hurt
Summary: You overheard Draco insulting you to Notts and Blaise.
Pairing: Draco Malfoy x Reader
Warnings: Swear words
Word count: 2,572
Tumblr media
Sneaking into Draco’s dorm room had become a skill by now. Getting into the Slytherin common room was the easy part. Sneaking into his room without students noticing was slightly more difficult. The trick? Stealing one of Draco’s robes so you looked the part.
Having done this countless times, you expected to waltz into his room and find him on his bed or at his desk. What you didn’t expect to see-, well hear was loud laughter coming from his room. With his door ajar you peeked through to see him pacing the room, his back to you, Blaise and Nott sprawled across his bed. Draco hated having anyone but you in his room let alone his bed, what was going on?
“It’s such a pain, it’s like she’s always there. No matter where I go, she’s right there, she’s like a leech that won’t let go! God she’s so annoying, would it kill her to give me some space?!”
Taken aback, you hold a hand to your thundering heart as your fight or flight kicks in. You could storm in there, confront him there and then about it, but what if he broke up with you? It took months to get to where you are now, for him to open up completely, for you to break down his walls. Putting your ear to the door again, you listen, just in case, just in case it was a misunderstanding.
“Mate she doesn’t seem that bad, I mean she’s hot and bloody whipped for your sorry arse.” That comment from Zabini earned a high five and laugh from Notts.
“A leech Zabini, did you not hear? A leech. She always has to spend every waking hour with me. It’s a surprise she hasn’t barged in yet.” And with a sigh he slumps into his chair by the desk, hand massaging his temples.
You were known for being touchy, that’s just how you showed affection. But for your boyfriend talk about you like that? You needed time to think. You needed to do something for Draco to make him regret his words. It just required a little… careful planning. Draco was known for being a possessive bastard for a reason after all.
Walking into the Great hall the following morning (after having spent the previous evening ignoring Draco’s letters asking for you to meet him) you had a different air around you, a sense of purpose. You walked straight to the Y/H table, members of your own house gawking as you sat down next to your friends for the first time since you started dating Draco. You were still close with your house mates, you just preferred eating with Draco,  and besides, Slytherins were fun in their own sense.
“Uh, did you get lost or something? WAIT did you two fight? Because if you did, I so called it. Mia you owe me 5 galleons, pay up!”
“Wait wait wait, you guys bet on my relationship with Draco?” This was a very Slytherin type of thing to do, to say this was unexpected was an understatement.
“Every house has bet on you two Y/N/N, we love you obviously, but there’s galleons to be made.” You had definitely chosen your best friends right.
“I hate you.” You stick out your tongue just to emphasise the point. “Now, has Draco noticed yet, has he looked over?” Not turning your head around to peak was the extremely difficult, everything in your body was telling you to turn around.
“Uh I don’t know what happened between you two but he does not look happy with you, if looks could kill…” Issy basically confirmed that your plan was working, you were hoping he’d be more confused or upset about you ignoring him, but anger would work too.
You finished your breakfast with Issy and Mia, the three of you leaving the Great hall together, all whilst successfully keeping the gaze, well glare of your boyfriend on you whilst you yourself didn’t spare him a single glance.
You weren’t even two steps out of the great hall when you feel a hand wrap around your wrist and pull you away from your friends. Yelping, you whip around to see a fuming blonde Slytherin leading you towards one of the court yards. You yanked your arm out of his grip as soon as you’d both stopped walking. “You know, you could’ve asked me nicely to follow you?”
“Why have you been avoiding me since last night? You didn’t respond to my letters and you ate at your own table. You haven’t even looked at me! Is everything okay? Has something happened?” You almost scoffed at the sincerity in his words. This was the same boy that had been saying how much he hated having you around all the time, surely the last 12 hours had been bliss for him.
You acted nonchalant, “Oh, I’ve just been busy. I am a student Draco. I have something called homework that needs to be done.”
Clearly, he was not very impressed by your response but neither of you really wanted to create a scene in front of the whole school. “Come on, I’ll walk you to class.” Draco was just reaching for you hand when you pulled away, as if his touch burned you. The look of hurt that shot across his eyes almost broke your resolve, almost. “It’s okay! Mia and Issy are waiting for me, besides, your lesson is across the castle. I’ll see you later okay!” And with that you turned and ran towards you lesson, leaving Draco staring after you dumbfounded.
It wasn’t until dinner that evening that you saw Draco again, this time, he was the one to surprise you. His bright blonde hair and green robes certainly stood out like a sore thumb in the sea of Y/H/C robes. And if that wasn’t the dead giveaway, the hushed whispers and glances from literally every other student in his direction was.
“Uh, Draco, not that I don’t love seeing you, but why are you at my table? We usually sit at Slytherin’s. You know my house tolerates you but they’re not… overly fond of you.” The last part you made sure only he heard.
“You’ve avoided me all day and all of last night. Can’t I be worried about my own girlfriend?” And as that signature cocky smirk of his stretched across his face, you knew you had lost.
That was until Cedric Diggory sat down next to you.
You were old family friends, everyone knew that, and he was always the one thing you could count on Draco being jealous of 100% of the time, no matter how small the interaction. Which is why you proceeded to throw yourself onto him and scream “I’ve missed you so much!! We have to go to The Three Broomsticks this weekend, I want to know how my favourite seeker is doing.” And you threw in a no-so-subtle wink to really rub salt into the wound.
Which… lead to you being thrown over a certain blonde’s shoulder and carried out of the great hall. You had two choices, let Draco carry you out and talk this through like any other normal couple, or… scream bloody murder and run away. You were a second too late to execute your plan however, he’d already walked the both of you straight into the room of requirement. “Uh Draco, what were you thinking of when summoned the room? Why is there only a bed and a fireplace?”
He sat down on the bed, pulling you to stand between his legs; his face was flushed a deep pink, it was adorable. “I just wanted a place to talk, I swear. Besides, I never heard you complain sex before.” God you wanted to punch the stupid smirk off his face.
“Oh my god Draco!” You really weren’t winning anymore; you were putty in his hands again.
“So princess, wanna tell me why you’ve been distant all day?” He had a hand under your chin now, the other holding your waist to keep you from moving. God you had missed his hands on you.
“I told you, I’ve just been busy. Besides we’ve spent so much time together recently, I’m sure you enjoyed the break.” You placed your hands on his shoulders, allowing yourself to lean down to drop a peck on his lips.
“Love what are you talking about?? When would I ever not want to spend time with you?”
By now you had your head resting on top of his, exhausted of having to keep up this façade around him. You missed his touch more than you had thought. This was pathetic, you couldn’t keep yourself together for even 24 hours. Was your resolve this weak?
“Tell me what’s wrong darling. Is it Potter? I swear to God- “
“No, it wasn’t Potter, sit your ass down Malfoy. Honestly you should just date him instead, you sure talk about him enough.” You weren’t sure whether to cry or laugh at this point.
“For the sake of our relationship I’m just going to pretend that you didn’t just suggest that I date Potter.” His hands reached up to cup your face, forcing you to make eye contact. “Now do you want to tell be why you can’t even look me in the eyes? Did I do something?”
You could cry at this point; how was this the same boy you saw compare you to a leech and insulted you to his friends? Was this just a game to him? Did he even love you or was this all just one big joke to him? You hadn’t realised how long you’d been lost in your own thoughts until Draco hooked his hands under your thighs and pulled you onto his lap, bringing your attention back his piercing grey eyes.
“I heard you. Last night. I came up to your room to see you, but you were in there with Blaise and Notts and I heard everything. I heard you talk shit about me to your them, do you hate being with me that much? Did you even love me at all? Or is this just one big game to you?” He had kept his eyes on you the entire time whilst yours had fallen to your lap, voice trembling. Your heart thundered in your chest as the heavy silence drew on, quickly becoming unbearable. You had hoped this entire time that it was just one big misunderstanding, that Draco would say you misheard. Yet the long-drawn silence was enough to make your heart drop to your stomach.
You set your arms on his shoulders, prepared to push yourself to stand up out of his hold, ready to sprint out the door to break down once in the comfort of your own dorm room. But just as you raised yourself from his lap, Draco’s arms wrapped tightly around your waist, keeping you in place on his lap. His right hand then reaching up to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear before bringing his mouth up to meet yours. You savoured the feeling, of his soft lips on yours, of the minty taste of him on your tongue; knowing it may be the last one you two would ever share. That thought alone was enough for the tears to start flowing, your kiss turning salty as your tears flowed heavier to the point where sobs broke out from your lips, breaking the kiss. You buried you head in your hands, trying to control the sobs wracking your body as Draco cradled you to him, guiding your head to rest in the crook of his neck.
Your hands gripped the back of his shirt, sobbing heavily into the white cotton as he ran his hands over your back and squeezed you tight. It wasn’t until you had managed to calm your sobs into quiet hiccups that he spoke up, his voice quiet and calm compared to how your thundering heart and uneven breaths.
“I’m so sorry. I never meant for you to hear that- no, I shouldn’t have said it in the first place. I didn’t mean anything I said, I swear to you, I love you so much and I would never do anything to hurt you. You’ve changed me for the better, you know you have. After getting this hideous mark on my arm, you have been the only thing that has kept me sane. The only thing that has tethered me to this world. I will never forgive myself for saying those words, even if it was just to keep up my image for Blaise and Notts. I love you. I love you. I love you.” He kept repeating the same three words. He whispered sweet nothings into your ears, begging for you forgiveness, trying to prove his love to you.
You had stopped crying altogether at this point, you simply relaxed into his hold, listening to his words and his heartbeat. From the second he opened his mouth you had already forgiven him; you’d never heard him sound so… raw before. Sure, you’d had emotional talks before, but you’d never heard him sound so scared, scared that he’d lose you.
You stood up from his lap and watched as his face fell, the colour draining from his face as he prepared for you to leave him then and there. Instead you reached for his hands, pulling him to stand in front of you. “Promise you’ll never put me through this again?”
“I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never question my love for you ever again. I-I never wanted to hurt you; I would never purposely do so.”
“I believe you.” And with that you wrapped your hands around his neck, pulling him in for a breath-taking kiss.
He pulled back from you, breaking the kiss only to say, “What a couple me make huh?” This had you giggling into the kiss as he claimed your lips as quickly as he had let them go. Luckily you had the room of requirement to… spend time together in. (let’s just say the both of you were very thankful for the bed)
Things didn’t immediately go back to normal again after that, Draco was a very private individual, so it took some time for him to learn that he didn’t have to hold up a façade around people who truly cared about him, and for him to not insult those he looked for the sake of his image. But once he got past that, the two of you would become unbreakable, your trust in one another running deep.
Voldemort would come and try to corrupt Draco, but Draco would stay by your side, fighting for Hogwarts despite the allegiance to Voldemort permanently scarred onto his skin. He would come back for his 8th year and build friendships with people he never thought he would, even being able to speak to the Golden Trio without grimacing or insulting them.
And as you laid in your bed on a cold winter night some 15 years from here, your son in between the two of you having crawled into your bed after having a nightmare, you knew you were content to spend the rest of your life just like this. That you would go through everything again in a heartbeat to end up where you are now.
#A/N: I am so sorry for this ending, I didn't really like how it ended but changed it like 20 times and this was the one that didn't make me want to burn the entire thing so I hope you enjoyed it!

“I like a challenge Darling”
Tumblr media
Word Count: 5,366 Demetri x reader Oneshot Warnings: Fluff, reader being paddled, NSFW
Marcus and Demetri had a different relationship as Master and Personal Bodyguard when compared to Aro and the Twins and Caius and Felix. Marcus would quite often converse with the tracker when it was just the two of them in his private study, exchanging views of the books they have read, sharing stories from their human lives etc. This is how he came to know that Demetri had become lonely over the years as he had yet to find his mate, unlike his friend Felix who found his mate Mia a few decades back. Marcus had told him to have faith and that when the time is right, he would meet his mate and they would spend an eternity together.
So when Demetri finally met Y/N courtesy of Esme Cullen, although it was totally by accident that the two met, Marcus was happy for him and welcomed Y/N into the family with open arms. He liked her as she was respectful to him and his brothers and being human, she was curious about a lot of things including their world, their laws and this was something Marcus found endearing about her and would give her as much of his time as possible when Demetri was away so she wouldn’t become bored or restless. Even Caius liked her and he hated humans. Marcus surmised this was because of her interest in their laws and how they came to power and she understood that the vampire world and the human world were better off under their rule than that of their predecessors.
Marcus was in his private study working at his desk, Demetri being his personal bodyguard was in the room sitting on the sofa reading. Marcus didn’t see the point of him standing at the back of the office when he could be comfortable on the sofa reading or planning for missions. Sometimes Marcus would hide in his office just to escape the throne room and the bickering of his brothers, he always bought Demetri with him which the tracker appreciated. This was one of those occasions.
They had been in Marcus’ study for about an hour when he surprised Demetri with a request, one that related to Y/N. “Demetri, would you bring Y/N to my office please as I have a proposition for her?” Demetri’s eyebrows rose, a look of shock flashed across his and he knew Marcus saw it “Do not worry my boy, it’s nothing untoward. I promise” Marcus reassured him “Of course Master. When would you like to see her?” He asked “As soon as possible” Marcus replied “I’ll go get her now then. She’s in the garden” “Very well. Thank you Demetri.” Demetri bowed his head and left the room making his way out to the South facing garden where Y/N was reading by the fountain.
“Hello mi amore” He said softly as he approached her, not wanting to spook her “Demetri” She replied with a smile, one that showed she was happy to see him “Have you been let off early?” She asked, a hopeful look crossed her face “No, sorry. I’m here to escort you Marcus’ study as he would like to talk to you” He replied “Oh. Is it bad? Have I done something wrong?” “Not that I am aware off. Maybe he has become bored of my company and wishes for yours instead” He chuckled “We both know that’s a lie. He’d never get bored of talking to you, you have too much in common. I’ll admit he does seem to like my company or should I say he likes to keep me company when you are away on missions” She replied as she slipped her hand in his, their fingers interlacing with one another. Demetri loved how warm she felt against his skin.
“Good afternoon Y/N” Marcus greeted her with a smile as she entered his study, Demetri right behind her “Afternoon Marcus, I trust you are well” She replied with a smile of her own “I am thank you and hope you are too” He gestured for them to sit on the sofa “I’m well too, thank you for asking” She sat beside Demetri and placed her hand in his, Marcus noticed and smiled, seeing the strong bond between them despite the short time they had been together.
“So you may be wondering why I asked to see you?” Y/N nodded and smiled “Well, Gianna is out sick for the week and I was hoping you might fill in for her. I know the two of you get along well and you have helped her out on occasion, when you’ve needed a change of scenery for example” Y/N looked at Demetri and he just smiled back at her “It’s your decision cara mia” She looked back at Marcus and smiled “I’d love too. Be nice to do something different for a week and at least I know I’ll be safe as everyone knows I’m Dem’s mate” She chuckled, Marcus and Demetri doing the same “That’s very true my dear.” Y/N was in for an interesting week and she didn’t even know it.
Later that night Marcus informed Aro and Caius that Y/N was covering reception for the remainder of the week in Gianna’s absence. They were pleased to hear this as the lower guard Louis, who had covered that day did not do a very good job. Caius had threatened to rip his hand off just because he could.
The following morning Demetri escorted Y/N down to reception and ensured she had everything she needed to complete the day’s work “Thank you for helping out mi amore” He said softly and placed a kiss to her temple “It’s no bother really. I’ve helped Gianna before and it’ll be nice to be out of our room and see somewhere other than the library for a few days” She replied “I’ll come by and see you at lunchtime” He kissed her lips before leaving and heading to the throne room for guard duty. “Please gods let this week pass without incident for my beloved” Demetri muttered low, praying to his gods.
The first two days on reception went by without any problems or incidents, something everyone was pleased with. Day three however, there was a small problem when Heidi bought the ‘tour’ group in. Two of the tourists started bickering and Heidi was busy sorting out the disruption and therefore didn’t hear one young lady ask Y/N where the bathroom was “I don’t know why they call it morning sickness when it lasts all day” She said to Y/N as they walked to the female bathroom. Heidi did a final headcount and noticed she was one person short “Y/N I seem to have lost someone” She whispered “She’s in the bathroom being sick. She’s pregnant” Y/N replied and Heidi’s face paled “Wait five minutes, then please escort her out the castle. Make some excuse for me otherwise I’m in big trouble” “Leave it with me Heidi. I had no intention of letting her re-join the ‘tour’ as it would’ve gotten you into trouble” Y/N said with a smile “You are a star Y/N, truly” Heidi gave her a grateful smile “I owe you one” She called over her shoulder and continued on her way with the tour group to the throne room. Y/N was pleased as the young lady got to keep her life and Heidi didn’t get into trouble for bringing a pregnant lady on the tour.
Day six of Y/N covering reception for Gianna was more eventful than anyone could have imagined. Demetri and Felix were in the training room with the lower and transitory guards carrying out the regular training session. Jane, Alec and Santiago were on duty in the throne room with the Kings. Y/N heard a commotion and got up from the front desk to look and saw some of the transitory guards fighting at the entrance to the castle, humans were beginning to pay attention which worried Y/N, especially as it was sunny outside.
Y/N made her way to the throne room and knocked on the door once and they opened from the inside “Sorry to interrupt but…” “Y/N you know you aren’t meant to interrupt” Aro cut her off “Yes Aro, and I apologise but some of the guards are fighting at the castle entrance and humans are gathering to watch and it’s sunny outside” She replied quickly, hoping she wouldn’t be punished as Gianna’s predecessors were. “Santiago, Josh please go and deal with the guards at the entrance. Y/N you can return to reception” Aro said with a smile “Thank you Aro” She smiled and bowed her head before leaving the throne room quickly.
“Y/N needs to be punished” Caius says to his brothers “Really brother? Do you really think it’s necessary?” Aro asked “She did interrupt despite knowing she shouldn’t” Caius replied “She came to warn us of a possible exposure threat and she did knock first” Marcus defended her actions “Still rules are rules brother. If Gianna had interrupted instead of Y/N we would’ve punished her. We cannot play favourites just because she’s Demetri’s mate even if she is helping out this week” Caius reasons “Ok then. I’ll take care of her punishment” Marcus says as he gets up from his throne “You? You’re going to punish her?” Caius asked smirking “Yes, Demetri is my bodyguard and Y/N is his mate. Therefore, I will handle this situation” He replied and left the throne room.
“Demetri won’t be happy” Alec muttered low to Jane so only she could hear “My shift has finished so I’ll go tell him. He’ll want to know about Y/N” Jane whispered back.
Marcus went to reception to see Y/N “Hello, my dear. I need you to come with me please” “Of course Marcus, am I in trouble?” She replied “I’ll explain soon enough” He said and held his arm out for her to take. He led her to one of the guest rooms in the South Wing. Once inside he closes the door and explains the situation they are now in. “Caius has asked that you be punished for the interruption” Marcus started softly “But I knocked first and I thought you’d want to know about a possible exposure risk, especially as it involves your guards” She replied “I know my dear and I pointed that out to him but he was adamant a punishment was needed. I told my brothers I would deal with your punishment as Demetri is my bodyguard and you are his mate” “O-ok. Thank you. Does Demetri know?” She asked “Jane has finished her shift and I’m sure she’ll inform him of what has occurred” He replied and she nodded.
“Please can make your way over to the bed?” Marcus asked and she did as he asked. She stood at the end of the bed and felt Marcus come to stand beside her. “Please lean over the bed with your arms out” She did as she was instructed and felt his cold hands wrap something silky around her wrists “I’m tying you to the bed so you don’t move during the punishment you’re going to receive” He said low as he reached over her and gently placed a silk scarf into her mouth and secured it at the back of her head “This is to muffle your cries. Although, I ask that you don’t resist or cry out as Demetri is likely to hear and the punishment will start over if it’s interrupted for anything but an emergency. Also, you must keep your eyes closed throughout. Understand?” “Yes Marcus” Her reply coming out muffled.
There was a knock at the door “I won’t be a minute” He told her and opened the door to see Demetri, a confused and slightly angry Demetri. He stepped into the corridor and shut the door. “Calm yourself, my dear boy. No real harm is to become her” He advised “Jane told me what happened and whilst I agree she shouldn’t have disturbed you, she only did it to save us from being exposed by our guards” Demetri replied, worry clear in his ruby eyes “I know that and that is why I decided on her punishment and not Caius…” “What is her punishment?” Demetri interrupted “She is to be paddled 40 times” Marcus replied “What? Why?” “Well I heard Y/N talking with Gianna recently about certain things and well Gianna’s been spanked by an ex in the past for ‘misbehaving’” Marcus replied and Demetri’s mouth fell open a little “So you thought Y/N should be paddled for interrupting you?” “Yes, I do. Unless you’d prefer I take a leaf out of Caius’ book?” Demetri shook his head and Marcus smiled “Here” Marcus says and hands Demetri the small black paddle “You want me to do it?” He asked surprised “If you’d rather me do it…” He trailed off and held his hand out “No, no I’ll do it” Demetri replied and went to enter the room, only Marcus stopped him “She thinks I am going to hand out the punishment and I didn’t correct her. Also, I never said you had to hit her hard, just that it has to be 40 times” Demetri nodded in understanding “Thank you master” He bowed his head “Of course my boy. Do you really think I would harm her or order you to do so” Demetri shook his head “Exactly, once you’re done take her to your room and spend the afternoon together.” Marcus turned and walked away.
Demetri entered the room and locked the door, he turned and saw Y/N bent over the end of the bed and secured in place by silk scarfs; he felt himself harden a little ‘No, this is punishment not pleasure’ he tells himself as he makes his way over to the bed. He doesn’t say anything just lifts her dress up to her waist so her lacy covered ass is on display ‘Gods this isn’t fair. She’s wearing the blue set I love’ he thought to himself. He counts to three mentally before bringing the paddle into contact with her ass softly.
‘Is that a practice one?’ Y/N thought to herself as the paddle hit her ass softly; the answer came to her rather quickly when the next few paddles to her ass were just as soft ‘Marcus must be being gentle cause I’m human and Dem’s mate’ she thought to herself as the paddle continues to hit her softly. ‘twenty-five’ Demetri counts in his head. ‘wonder what Dem will think when he finds out Marcus paddled my ass’ her thoughts going to her mate and his reaction. Demetri continues to hit her softly as his minds wonders too ‘I think next time I spank her it’ll be a little harder and with my hand, just to see what effect it has on her in a different setting.’ Y/N feels confused as this doesn’t seem like a punishment Caius would approve of but she wasn’t going to complain. ‘forty’ Demetri places the paddle on the bed and unties her wrists and places a kiss to each one; a soft gasp escapes her lips and he smirks “It’s just me darling” He says low in her ear as he removes the scarf from her mouth “Dem” She breathed and he helped her up and held her to him “I’m here” He kisses the top of the head “Did you…” “Marcus let me carry out your punishment” He cut her off “I’m sorry. I only…” “Don’t worry about it. Marcus and I have spoken and agreed your actions were for the right reasons, this was just to satisfy Caius’ request.”
He took her hand in his and they made their back to their shared room, once inside he locked the door “How are you feeling?” “I’m ok but next time the dumbass guards risk exposure, I’m going to ignore it” She replies and he nods as he pulls her into him capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. He pulls away his eyes locked on hers, his burning in his need for her. He kisses her roughly, his hands moving to her ass and he gives it a squeeze before lifting her up, her legs wrapping around his waist. “Good girl” He says low and she gives him a sultry smile.
He placed her gently on the bed, one hand running up her thigh coming to rest on her lace covered hip. He kissed along her jawline making his way to her ear and nipped it gently, before placing a kiss below and leaving a trail of kisses down her neck, his hand stroking her through her lace covered panties “Hey, I’m not that easy Dem, take your time…play me like a violin” She says low in his ear and he growls before replying “Play your cards right and I may snap your G string” He gave a wink and continued to kiss and nip at her skin.
He pulled away long enough to remove her dress and his shirt and trousers before capturing her lips with his. She bit his lip and he opened his mouth allowing her to slip her tongue inside, their tongues moving against each other as soft moans fill the room.
“You’re lucky I love this blue lace set you’re wearing or I’d be ripping it to shreds” He says as removes her bra and panties before settling himself between her thighs, his mouth closing around her clit and sucking harshly, flicking the bud with his tongue. Soft gasps fill the air and she feels his fingers dance against her skin, he growls as the scent of her arousal fills his nose, the sound vibrating against her clit, her arousal building and a soft whimper leaves her lips.
He moves up the bed, placing one hand to her cheek and kisses her lips softly as he enters her slowly, stilling for a moment “So warm and wet just for me” He pulls out of her a little before re-entering her slowly “Ahh Dem” He moves in and out of her over and over filling her deeply with every thrust; hitting that sweet spot and she met him thrust for thrust “Ahh Y/N” He breathed against her skin, she felt his mouth on her breast, kissing and sucking her skin leaving a mark. He continued to move within her as he took a nipple into his mouth sucking it and flicking it with his tongue. Her fingers carded through his hair and she gave it a tug; a growl escaped him before he gently nipped her breast.
He could feel his release was near but held off as he was determined for her to finish first, he needed to claim her, finally mark her as his. He kissed her neck and then sank his fangs into her skin, a light gasp left her lips as she felt him bite her. Her orgasm hit her at that moment, her eyes closing and stars flittered behind her eyelids. He continued to drink her blood, drawing out her orgasm as he released himself deep inside her. He pulled his teeth away from her neck, licking the wound closed; leaving a bite mark on her skin that would show everyone that she belonged to him.
Y/N could feel that Demetri was still hard inside her despite him climaxing moments ago “Dem, you’re still hard” She said low “It’s a vampire thing, we can go for multiple rounds without tiring” He replied and winked at her “So, there’ll be a round two then?” She asked before biting her bottom lip and looking at him through her lashes. “Definitely sweetheart” He replied as he began thrusting in and out of her again “I could stay here and make love to you all day” He said looking into her eyes and gave her a quick kiss “I do have the afternoon off…” He trailed off and let his hand slowly move down her body, his fingers lightly brushing her folds. “As fun as that sounds, I’m human and I don’t think I could keep up with you” She replied low “I like a challenge darling. Let’s see how many rounds you can keep up with me for. Mmm?” He asked, his eyes darkened by lust, before capturing her lips with his, both of them moaning into the kiss.
“Ok, but we have to try different positions. Switch it up a little” She replied, taking her bottom lip between her teeth, she felt him twitch inside her “Deal. Where would you like round two?” “On the bed but I’m on top” He smiled and rolled them over “Do with me as you will” He smiled at her, she smiled back before lifting nearly all the way off of him only to sink back down on him hard “Cazzo” He breathed out and she chuckled “That good huh?” She lifted off of him again “You had a great teacher” He smirked at her as she lowered herself back down on him, his hands going to her hips “Uh uh. You gave me control sweetheart” She circled her hips over his and he growled, his hands moving to grip the bedsheets “Good boy” She praised low and he chuckled. She leant forward to kiss him as she grinded against him and felt him hit a new spot inside her, she repeated this action as she left a trail of open-mouthed kisses along his jaw and down his neck. “Ah Y/N.” She continued to move her hips over his and he felt her teeth graze his skin where his neck meets his shoulder before she sucked on the skin there eliciting a purr from him. He was smiling as he watched her rise and lower herself on his hardened length, her hips grinding against his to get the friction she needs as she nears her orgasm, “I’m so close” He breathed out “Me too” She smiled and sped up her movements, her release followed shortly after; her hips continuing to move over his and she feels him twitch inside her, his cold seed filling her once more. His eyes were closed tight as he came, his mouth open; a soft gasp escaping his lips as his grip on the sheets tightened. “Gods, you’re amazing” He praises her and sits up to hold her close, pressing a kiss to her temple “Like you said, I had a great teacher” She whispered and he smiled against her skin.
“Round three” He breathed against her ear “Your choice” She replied and he thought for a moment “Any chance of a blow job…whilst I think of our next position?” He asked “Only if you say please…Mr Volturi” He growled and thrusted up into her “Dem” She cried out “Any chance of a blow job please?” “Of course Mr Volturi” She climbed off him and moved over to sofa “Coming then?” She beckoned him with a wave of her fingers. He went to sit on the sofa when she placed her hand on his stomach “You stay standing” She sat down on the sofa and wasted no time in taking him into her mouth; his head fell back instantly, loving the way her warm mouth felt around his cock “Oh gods” Her hands moved to his ass and gave it a squeeze as she took him further into her mouth, the tip of his cock hitting the back of her throat. She moaned around his cock; one of his hands moved to the back of her head, his fingers grabbing a hand full of hair. She ran her tongue along the underside of his cock, swirling it around the tip, licking up some of the pre-cum that had leaked out. He growled low as he felt a warm hand cup his balls, massaging them and he tugged on her hair and thrusted his hips forward ensuring he hit the back of her throat and she moaned around him. She hollowed her cheeks as she continued to suck him off and massaging his balls “Such a good girl” He praised her as she run her teeth along him and he twitched inside her mouth. He tugged on her hair and she stopped moving her head up and down his cock, allowing him to fuck her mouth, he moved his hips forward a few times ensuring he hit the back of her throat each time. He felt her tap his thigh and he stopped moving his hips, giving control back to her. She sucked and licked his cock a few more times before she ran her teeth over his length again and he emptied himself down the back of her throat, her swallowing everything he gave her. She licked him clean before pulling away and looking up at him. He knelt down before her and kissed her, tasting himself on her tongue. “I love you Y/N” “I love you too. Next position then?”
He took her hand and led her to his desk and bent her over it; and he entered her easily from behind, one hand wrapping around her throat applying a little pressure “If you don’t like this or you want to me stop, let me know” She nodded in response as the pressure on her throat increased a little. He thrusted in and out her setting a fast and rough pace “Demi” She breathed out and he leant over her burying his head in the crook of her neck, slipping inside her deeper as he continues to thrust inside her, his other hand moving down to play with her clit as he applies a little more pressure to her throat “You’re doing beautifully mi amore” He felt her walls flutter around him and he sped up his pace, edging them closer to their releases; the warmth of her release coaxing his own to follow. He released his hold on her throat and placed a kiss to her neck as he pulled out of her, she turned to face him smiling. One hand going to the back of his head and she pulled down for a passionate kiss.
“Round four is your choice darling” “Well, Mr Volturi before round four I’d like you to get on your knees and return the favour. Please” He smiled wide “Anything for you.” Demetri sat her on his desk and lowered himself to his knees in front of her and buried his head between her thighs, inhaled slightly taking in the scent of her arousal and growled low. He looked up at her to see her looking down at him, his ruby eyes had darkened further due to his continued arousal. He gently lifted one leg over his shoulder before lowering his head and sucking on her clit, flicking the bundle of nerves with his tongue. She leaned back slightly and gripped the edge of his desk as he placed a hand on her stomach keeping her in place before he gently pushed her other leg away from him, giving him better access to where she needed him most. He continuing to suck and flick her clit with his tongue, her soft moans being the only sound in the room. He smiled against her knowing he was the only one who could elicit that reaction from her. He moved his head lower and she felt his tongue enter her, she gasped and one of her hands moved to his head and she threaded her fingers through his hair before tugging on the strands, eliciting a growl from him. She felt his growl vibrate against her “Dem” She breathed out, he growled again and she felt a knot form inside her; she tried moving her hips to get the friction she craved but his hand still held her in place. He withdrew his tongue from inside her and closed his mouth back around her clit, sucking harsher than before; his tongue flicking her bud. She felt him slip two fingers inside her, curling and uncurling them so they brushed her inner walls a few times. He uncurled his fingers and moved them deeper inside her, hitting her sweet spot; his fingers and tongue working together to bring her to climax. “Ahh…Dem” She breathed out as she came hard, her eyelids half closed. He withdrew his fingers and put them into his mouth “Mmm. I love the taste of you baby” He smiled looking up at her through his lashes “I love you Demi” “I love you too.”
He stood up and surprised her when he lifted her over his shoulder and made his way to their walk-in closet and set her down on her feet before he pinned her against the wall. He captured her lips with his in a heated kiss and nipped at her bottom lip and she whimpered allowing him to slip his tongue inside her mouth and dominate the kiss. He lifted her up into his arms, her legs wrapping around his waist and she could feel his cold hard length pressing against her entrance and with one slow thrust he entered her easily “Fuck…baby” He growled in her ear, he didn’t give her time to adjust to him, he just began to thrust in and out of her at a steady pace; her legs closed tighter around his waist and she grinded against him; he slid in deeper hitting that sweet spot inside “Oh yes” She cried out, her nails scratching lightly across his back and he growled and thrusted up into her harder. He kissed and sucked his way up and down her neck, nibbling her earlobe and she felt him smile against her neck with each moan of pleasure he coaxed from her. His thrusts sped up chasing his release as he felt her walls flutter around his cock; he bit her neck for the second time that afternoon and took a few gulps of her blood and she screamed out in pleasure as her orgasm hit her hard, stars dancing behind her eyes. The warmth of her release pulled him over the edge and he emptied himself inside her; continuing to move inside her with slow, long stokes as they rode out their highs together. He licked the wound closed and kissed his bite mark, he captured her lips in a slow sensuous kiss, she opened her mouth to him and he slipped his tongue inside, their togues moving in sync with one another.
“I love how you feel inside me” She whispered when he pulled back to allow her to breathe “I love how warm you feel wrapped around me” He replied before kissing her again. He walked backwards to the loveseat in the corner and sat down with her still in his arms, staying buried inside her for a little longer. He wrapped his arms around her holding her to his chest as she wrapped hers around him. She buried her head into his neck as he laid his on her shoulder, both enjoying their after-sex cuddle.
Y/N was totally exhausted once Demetri had finally finished making love to her and he noticed her heartrate and breathing had slowed. She was supersensitive now and knew she was likely to be a little sore in the morning but didn’t mind as she had enjoyed every minute of being with her mate.
He carried her to the bathroom and set her down on the counter and run a sink full of water using some of her favourite bubble bath and washed her gently with a warm cloth. He then cleaned himself up before carrying her over to their bed, placing her gently beneath the duvet. He crawled in beside her and pulled her into his arms once again and held her as she fell asleep, breathing in her scent. He smiled to himself as he thought about the sexy afternoon they had just spent together, impressed that she had kept up with him for six rounds of amazing sex. ‘my amazing little human’ he thought and tightened his hold her, placing a kiss to her hair “I love you darling” He whispered and closed his eyes, resting beside his mate.

IDK what this is, but it is what happens when I relapse into a shipping whore.
So AOS just ended, and even if I stopped watching and then re-watched it and then died when they announced Daniel Sousa was making a guest star, I always loved the show and the characters.
I totally blame Daniel Sousa for making me fall so hard for Dousy (people, make peace with it already).
So here are my head canons (if you finish reading this I’ll give you a cupcake). I basIcally thought and wrote and didn’t much care for grammar or semantics much.
So this is how my brain works.
Also, I wish I had the time to actually make this into a proper fic, but I don’t.
It basically covers the year we didn’t get to see.
Kora stays with Daisy as she recuperates, mainly because she is the only one on the ship who can give her enough warmth for her to regain her temperature when it suddenly starts spiking down.
They talk. Daisy forgives her, because she recognizes the same lost girl she was in her.
Kora is still defensive and questioning a lot of her decisions, but Daisy assures her that she shouldn’t stress about it, but take it one day at a time.
They trade stories regarding their mother. Before they dock back at the Lighthouse they agree that Jiaying was not the best of mothers, but she did try her best to work with what she had been given.
When they arrive back at the lighthouse Daisy is still a little fazed, but she doesn’t let it bother her as she realizes the worry Daniel was in.
It’s a weird feeling, the one where she finds herself glad in knowing there is someone waiting for her specifically.
He is at her side almost instantly. Just as impulsive as he had kissed her, he hugs her, and tells her he’s glad she’s ok.
Daisy breathes him in and realizes the tears she had already dried up begin to fall once more. She allows herself to feel the embrace of this man out of time who has somehow gotten her attention and respect.
Everyone asks about Fitzsimmons’ whereabouts, and they get informed about their little rendezvous regarding their daughter.
Mack orders them to rest, their next mission can wait.
Daisy chooses the bunk next to Sousa’s because she has gotten used to him being by her side and without Fitz or Simmons around she’s sure she’ll be restless.
They only get an hour of sleep before Fitzsimmons arrive back, with Piper, Flint and baby Alya in hand.
Daisy is out like a light, Daniel wakes her up because he knows she needs to see her family, and in that instant, as he is sheepishly explaining to her how he debated whether or not to wake her up for this but ultimately decided to do so, she kisses him again.
He is smiling when they part, and she whispers a thank you as she stands to go and finally see the miracle that is Alya Fitz-Simmons with her own eyes.
Daniel, as always, is trailing behind her, constant and solid and Daisy wonders as she stares at the little girl with blond hair and vivid eyes just how all of this was even possible.
Ok so umm, is this a multichapter bullet point fic?
Jemma has Alya on her lap as she talks to Daisy.
Daisy can’t decide where to fix her eyes, on the gorgeous miracle that is Alya, or on Sousa and Mack who both look tired and strangely content as they share a beer.
The thought sneaks up on her.
She understands why, even if they did have the time stream and could see the timeline play out, she knows why Enoch and Fitz were so sure of this being their last mission as a whole team together.
Because of Alya. She tells Simmons as much and Jemma agrees, a sad smile on her lips which turns blissful as she strokes her daughter’s hair.
They want to give their little girl a normal life, or well, as normal as they can, and they can’t do that while being active agents.
Daisy agrees and claims that if anyone on the team deserved such a life it was them.
Jemma disagrees, because she also deserves some kind of respite in her life.
Daisy only smiles as her eyes drift over to where Sousa still sits, now alone and contemplating his surroundings, probably trying to take in the fact this was where (or well, when) he would probably end up.
Jemma sees this, but does not comment, for she knows how to read her friend and knows there are still things that she needs processing and figuring out all by herself.
So she asks, she asks about Daisy’s plans for the nearby future.
Daisy shrugs, but she knows she’s not done with SHIELD, and she doesn't think everyone else is.
She’s still an agent, she claims, she’ll go wherever she’s needed, with whomever she’s needed by.
Because life is funny, Kora then enters the room, still weary and out of place. Simmons sees her first and tells Daisy.
Daisy realizes then: they had fought for family, so that this family could survive, so that everyone’s families could thrive.
Kora was now part of that family.
Daisy calls out to one sister to properly introduce her to the other.
Daniel watches, amazed at how his life has ended up, and enthralled with the fact it seems someone like Daisy Johnson apparently likes him back enough to turn her eyes towards him and give him a soft and promising smile right before continuing her interaction with her sisters.
Mack chuckles at him and congratulates him on his decision.
Sousa doesn’t much understand things, and he knows he’s about to get confused with just about everything, but he finds he doesn’t mind much of it. These are good people with good hearts and even if there is a feeling of finality to their team, there is also the sizzling feeling of something entirely new and equally amazing starting.
He asks the current director about their next move, about what will happen to the team.
Mack answers with a sigh, but with the truth.
He needs to get out and head to HQ to remind the rest of the organization about his position. He’s been MIA for enough time. He thinks it’s time to take on his role more permanently. More directing, less fighting.
He tells him about Fitzsimmons plans to retire for a while.
And the rest? Daniel asks, because there are still more members of the team and even if there is something brewing there with Daisy, he wants to know how he can be a part of events.
Mack doesn’t really know yet, and states it.
--------------------
What am i doing? Part 123456789
It isn’t until the next morning, when Mack announces he is leaving for HQ when Coulson tells the team about his decision to give himself a year to see what he wants to do with his new life.
May smiles at him, soft and honest and finally coming to terms with the fact that even if the man is all the best parts of Coulson, he isn’t really Coulson. She will always love him, but their time has already passed.
She tells him she approves and it’s like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders as he smiles back.
Daisy’s eyes get watered, but tears do not fall, because it means she still has a year to tease and rely on him. It’s more than she had ever expected to have.
Daniel sits by her side, Kora on the other and Alya can’t seem to get enough of everyone and she’s constantly running from one aunt and uncle trying to get them to tell her stories about their adventures.
Jemma apologizes.
Mack informs Daisy she has a spot on Z1, if she wants it, she can build her own team and will be granted as much vacation time as she desires.
Daisy appreciates it and instantly turns to look at Sousa, noting how his stance relaxes and she comes to the realization he was afraid for his own future. She’s not sure where their relationship is going. She knows they like each other well enough and that there is a feeling of attraction and comfort which she had not felt -ever. But she knows he’s dependable and solid and she owes it to him to give him a fighting chance in this century.
Looking at Kora, she realizes she has two people in care now, two people she will gladly ease into her world and into her time.
Elena is fast to inform she’ll head back to HQ with her boyfriend, claiming she needs some time off as well.
Piper and Flint don’t feel as exhausted, they claim they’re glad to head back to HQ and continue working wherever Mack sends them.
The last to talk is May who surprises everyone by stating she is done.
Daisy asks her SO why, demanding a valid reason for her abandoning her work, reminding her that everything she is as an agent was because of her.
May can feel Daisy’s anguish and her fear for the unknown.
She looks at the young woman she has helped grow and she realizes her feelings are slowly getting there, returning and making her head spin at the same time.
May simply states it is time for the new generation to continue doing what she had done for many years. Looking straight at Daisy, May adds that she is sure her legacy will be well-continued.
It’s not that they are being forced to split up, or that they’ll never see each other again, but it is time and Daisy can feel it. Can feel how even if she will still work under Mack’s direction, she won’t have him as her permanent back up, that role has changed now. There is another solid man who is willing to stand beside her and even though it is still fairly new, she has a feeling it will work.
She’ll be fine, she always is. Her family is not lost, it will still be there. She is not lost, she knows who she is and knows what she wants to do.
---------
The lighthouse is empty, left in her charge while she waits for Mack’s orders from HQ.
Coulson and May were the last to leave, Coulson receiving an order for him to report to HQ.
May had just been sticking around to ensure some more time in his presence and once the old AC had gone, she had followed.
Kora and Daniel roam the place, both amazed by the tech and the stories Daisy shares with them.
She finds him one day, they have barely been there a week, not a lot of time has passed for them to have talked everything out. There was a lot to process. Especially for him.
He’s reading something and she realizes it is his file, she teases him about it and he never fails to surprise her by teasing her back, giving her a piece of newspaper he found where the name Quake is in headlines.
She groans but appreciates his effort of finding out about the world.
She realizes then she hasn’t properly introduced him to the internet.
She thinks he’ll freak and thus proceeds to do just that.
He is in fact amazed and gets the hang of using it way too quickly. She feels strangely proud and fuzzy about it and she shakes the emotion off because sure, they like each other, and Deke did stay behind because he could see it, but they were still waiting on orders and until her life didn’t move forward she would wait to decide what to do with the rest of it.
She gets orders from Mack to build her own team a day later.
She has been training with Kora and she knows her sister is still a little off and not ready for full combat or missions, but she convinces Mack to let her be her sister’s SO and all while she does this she has May’s voice in her head.
Daniel is as solid as ever as she gives him the option of staying at HQ and training up there or joining her. Because well, she does like him a lot, he is constant, and kind and such a square and a dork she can’t believe she feels this attached and attracted to him, but he is quick and witty and he makes her laugh on most days and he actually gets along fairly well with Kora and she doesn’t feel like losing one of the few good things she has gained during the last month.
Of course he takes her offer of being in her team.
She teases him on the day they are departing the base. He hasn’t been out and about in the 21st century, even if he has seen a couple of movies with her now, and he does enjoy going on google maps. But she knows it is different.
He teases back, talking about restaurants and movies and bars and Daisy realizes it is his dorky way of asking her out.
She laughs, says yes and before they know it, there is a Zephyr arriving and their conversation cut short.
Daisy finds herself cursing the ship and her sister who is the one who interrupts them.
The Zephyr brings a whole team of new agents to take over the Lighthouse.
Inside she is met with Mack and Elena who greet her as though it has been years since they last saw each other.
They tell her she is needed back at HQ. So she’ll get to see Coulson for a while. That’s nice.
Sousa stays in the cockpit because he has never seen this world before. Daisy finds him there, the ship flying on autopilot.
This time it is him who thanks her, for allowing him a second chance. Because he has read all about Peggy and SHIELD and HYDRA and he understands that everything had a purpose, even his failed relationship with the famed Agent.
Daisy doesn’t dare push because she thinks she might combust if he continues his line of thought.
Out of everything, liking someone was not something Daisy had been planning on occurring to her in the near future. Maybe in the far off one, but definitely not near.
Life was funny that way.
He is admiring the view. She can’t help it, she leans in and grabs his chin to turn his face gently towards her own. She kisses him, gently and tries to convey the thousand and one thank yous she should be giving him.
He returns the kiss, as he has always done everything time they do this. Because they have done this, a lot of times. Because funnily enough he is a flirt and she is flirt and there is only so much foreplay she can handle.
But this time it’s different, because it feels different, it feels as if she is finally letting him in, finally making her decision regarding him.
He had already chosen to stay with her, now she was choosing to stay with him.
----------
She doesn’t get to actually work with Coulson, Mack has him as his personal confidant and assessor. She feels it was meant to be.
She does get to see him though, and she is glad, because Daniel Sousa is making her head spin and she has no idea how to control it.
Even Kora manages to tease her about it, as they are training one day and the simple mention of Daniel’s name makes Daisy stumble because she is reminded of the previous night and how she had no clue a man could make her feel that way.
Coulson tells her, point blank, to stop fooling herself and give the man a break.
Daisy stops responding to Coulson's calls for a week.
Jemma is always patient and insightful, but way too optimistic.
They are doing fine, their relationship is progressing as normal as one can when you’re an inhuman working for SHIELD, trying to build up a team in order to take them out to space.
She tries to get more information regarding said mission out of Mack at least once a week, her old partner never budges, but does tease her about her boyfriend, because everyone enjoys teasing her about him.
She always wants to scream because of it, but forgets all about it the second she gets to spend time with Daniel and he greets her with the same dorky and loving smile as he talks about his day and she talks about hers and it is so domestic and it suddenly dawns on her. Why her head has been feeling fuzzy.
She has a home, and a pseudo domestic life and she has never had that in her life.
As they finish dinner that night, she grabs Daniel and doesn't let him go for the rest of the night. She prays her sister arrives home late as she usually does.
She tells him she loves him that night and when he answers back she feels her world righting again and everything just becomes easier.
She only tells Jemma about it. Coulson and Mack figure she has figured it out and she ignores them.
It is fitting that she finishes building her team up only a week after that.
The pieces fall in place and she finds herself happy.
It takes her three weeks to notice she hasn’t seen or heard from Coulson or Mack in said time.
She finds she doesn’t mind much.
She then realizes it is because Coulson left to visit May at her new job and she breaks out into a full hearty laugh as Coulson explains what May has chosen to do with her life.
She goes on her first mission with her own team after that. Something pretty straight forward. A test of sorts to see if they truly will work well together.
It feels nice to be back on the Z1.
She almost laughs when she realizes how well she and Daniel work together, and he definitely laughs at her when they all realize Kora is the better pilot of them all -Daisy included.
She visits Fitzsimmons on her own, because Kora still feels awkward around them and she needs to finish some report she promised Coulson and Daniel is in the middle of a solo mission.
It is a quick visit, because her life is still busy and she was actually finishing up on her own sort of mission near Scotland and she can’t help it.
Jemma is glad she took the time, Fitz, as always is great and enthusiastic and is not there much because Alya adores her dad and doesn’t allow him much time to be in the room with the other two adults.
Daisy feels a pang of longing, and quickly shakes it off. She admires her friends for retiring and for having the courage to have a family.
She still has things to do. While she can.
When they reunite both are exhausted for different reasons, but both Daniel and Daisy agree that while they had very successful missions, they prefer to work together.
She claims it is much easier.
He claims it is a lot more fun.
The Z3 is ready, Mack tells her, and Daisy feels a pang of excitement.
She tells her team and they are all equally excited.
SWORD is hers, she has earned it and she revels in the fact she doesn't cower at the prospect of leading. She has a good man by her side who proves to her every single day she can do all these things on her own but she doesn’t have to.
She has a sister who has come such a long way, who now smiles more often and enjoys the little things. Daisy feels proud of her and every time the feeling takes over her she wants to laugh, because Kora is older, yet younger than she is and Daniel is always confusing the fact and she adores that out of everything he’s seen, that is what always gets him rattled up.
She makes him watch as many space films to prep him for it. He is unimpressed by Star Wars but claims ET a favorite.
Kora surprises Daisy by informing her baby sister she has gotten a pilot's license and the stamp of approval from May herself to be able to efficiently fly them on the Z3.
Daisy finds it funny that even if he had managed to welcome the 21st century life-style (sans actual style) with ease, it is atop the Z3 where Daniel feels most comfortable.
He claims it is because it was on a Zephyr where he first caught a glance of his future.
Daisy thinks he’s being sappy about it, and does not push because she is certain she will cry if her suspicions about his chosen wording are correct.
She’s the captain, for god’s sake. Her dork boyfriend should not make her want to cry.
It is different from normal missions. It is both smoother and yet far more exhilarating.
She appreciates the wonders of being able to sleep in between missions and assignments.
She especially appreciates the fact she convinced Daniel (or did he convince her, she’s still a little fuzzy on how that conversation went, she blames him) to share her bunk.
Because their life is chaotic at times and to be able to wake up next to him, well, it is something she got used to pretty quickly -or well, around the time of the 5th loop.
It is Coulson’s idea and she cries a little as she receives the invite.
Daniel simply kisses her head when he finds her, he whispers an ‘I love you’ which only makes her smile even wider and she adds her tears to the list of ‘odd things which should NOT be happening to me’ list.
Simmons wink is almost a confirmation, but she waits patiently for the email.
The first words in the email are unintelligible, which basically confirms the fact to her.
She ponders on what to tell him for three days, but then they get dropped into a mission. There are five of them out there beside her, her sister and Daniel included. She can’t let her guard down now. There is a team that needs her.
Everything turns out to be a misunderstanding in the end. But it doesn’t go by smoothly. The (insert alien name) race is stubborn and it takes a lot of Daisy’s energy to get them to talk.
Daniel will never let her forget it is one of his odd idioms which finally makes the aliens cooperate.
Still, they have earned a day off, and she orders Kora to put the Z3 on autopilot, as close to Earth as she can.
It is that order which makes Daniel know there is something up with her.
He patiently waits for her to tell him. Because he knows her, and he knows she needs to sort out her brain before asking for any kind of input -from anyone. But she always does, at least, she has always done so with him.
She tells him as they both stare at earth, reminiscent of that first trip they took together. Circumstances are entirely different.
He is scared, he has to admit, because there is nothing as scary in life as to be hit with the realization that you're going to be responsible for another human.
And she can’t help it, she teases him about it; because she needs to find humor in this, and because it is no secret that very few things manage to rile Agent Sousa up. It is one of the many reasons he works so well in the field -with her.
Besides his surprise, his reaction is very much like him, and Daisy thinks it a win for her when he doesn’t propose to her right away. Not because she would say no (she’s sure she would say yes), but because it means he truly is a wonderful man who can read her better than anyone and who gets her, all parts of her.
In the end, they agree it is best to take it a day at a time. She is still the captain and he is still her right hand and they are still pretty good at their jobs and they don’t want to stop.
In the end, Kora is the one who steps up, once she notices her sister throwing up almost at the end of the third month.
She volunteers to help in any way she can.
Their daughter is born in space, just like little Alya. Because Daisy truly never took time off until she literally couldn’t stand and because even if she couldn’t go out and explore, she was still the captain and she directed her team with an authority and a smoothness, which reminded Daniel of Agent Coulson, which he knew meant a lot more to her than to him.
True to her word, Kora steps up and helps keep Z3 floating as the couple settles into their new lives.
Daisy knows it is not ideal. But she wouldn’t trade her life for anything.
Daniel still finds himself waking up, even years after, with their daughter already running around the Z3, and can’t believe his life.
Honestly, if you’ve made it this far, my sincere apologies. But I was left with way too many feels and a thousand and one ideas in my head which I just had to get out.

“you’re a fucking lawyer.”
a soft chuckle escapes your ceo’s lips as he turns away, signalling to a staff you didn’t even notice standing in the corner of the living room.
“can i get two cups of tea please? thank you.”
you look at him, completely stunned and at a loss of words.
all this time, you just thought he was making you do all the work while he hid in the office. sunwoo and eric even made jokes about him jerking off in his big ol’ fancy chair...
when he was working on parts of the case that even you were blind to.
everything you did and researched on were just the basic facts and details he needed before he could pull out any more in-depth information and evidence to help you win the case.
and it hurt to know that there was no way you could’ve done it.
“do tell me when you’re done being surprised. we’ve got a lot to discuss about this case,” he comments emptily, not even looking at you while he pulls your file over for him to read.
“i’m sorry, but what the fuck?” you blurt out, completely forgetting that you were sitting right in front of the man who could fire you instantly. you should’ve shut up after the first time you called him a ‘fucking lawyer’, but you nearly regret it the moment you cursed again.
“you really need to work on your people’s skills,” he smirks, eyes still focused on the files. “you may be capable of clearing cases, especially for a newbie, but if you go off cursing in every line that comes out of your mouth, it becomes a valid reason for me to fire you. i can’t have you spitting those curse words in court.”
shut up or ask him again?
shut up or ask him why he hasn’t showed up in office for the last six months?
shut up or ask him why he hasn’t told anybody he’s a lawyer when the entire office is scared shitless of him and has no clue who he even i--
“what the fuck?”
your ceo sighs and drops his head a little, his hold on the sheets of paper loosening as he looks at you through the corners of his eyes.
“you know the entire office is either scared of you or hates you because everybody thinks you’re just...” you aggressively flail your hand around. “doing nothing.”
“aaaand may i know who exactly is ‘scared of me or hates me’?” he raises a brow.
“i don’t know-- like every newbie is afraid to ask about you. i asked lee jaehyun and he shooed me away--”
“ah, that man kept his word.”
you frown, your confusion reaching a new height you never thought was possible.
“damn, now i owe him a trip to japan.”
“a trip to jap-- it was a bet?!” you nearly yell, but the staff arriving with your tea urges you to collect yourself for the umpteenth time today.
and it wasn’t even 10 yet.
“finally a sentence without a curse word,” he says while nodding at the staff member.
“what did you bet on?! whether he could keep his mouth shut about who you really are?! it doesn’t answer anything about why you’ve never stepped foot into the office, or why you act like an ass, or why you don’t even mention the fact that you’re a lawyer yourself--”
“whoa, whoa, whoa.”
you calm down from your high, not noticing that your voice was gradually getting louder. you couldn’t believe it. you felt so played by this man that you had nothing to say.
it’s not like he did anything that actually hurt you or anything, but the fact that the entire office was so terrified of him or that nobody has said anything about him... when it was all a lie?
“need i remind you, again, that i can fire you?” he leans back into his seat, hand holding the tea cup and you suddenly take note of how small the china looks in his hand.
you swallow your saliva, noticing that your throat was dry and your heart was pounding in your chest.
“if you must know, lee jaehyun was my senior when we were in law school. so yes, i had a bet with him to say that he wouldn’t be able to keep it to himself. my real identity, of course. he begged everyone else in the office whom i’ve met before to keep quiet about it. he would win once a newbie figures out that i’m a lawyer, which i guess he did.”
you could feel multiple question marks ascend from the top of your head.
that was one problem down, but what about him MIA-ing for six months? what about him being such an asshole?
“now, can we get back to the case? i got my cousin to get you here to discuss more about the case, not to let you remind me that i lost a bet to jaehyun hyung.”
his what--
“yes, your manager is my cousin. now get a hold of yourself and let’s get this done with, please?”
you were so not used to him saying please after the last conversation you had with him was him asking you to get out of his office with his eyes.
you try your best to wipe away all the questions that were being scribbled across the whiteboard in your head while he begins discussing the case with you. he points out little details and facts that linked in ways you never could’ve thought of.
you were scribbling and writing notes in your own notebook while your ceo talks you through the whole ordeal. you throw out some ideas for defense and he does the same. you wonder if you’d ever have these in-depth discussions about a difficult case with sunwoo or chanhee or eric, ever.
you were so absorbed in the case that you found yourself barefooted now, toes digging into the rug and you were now seated on the soft material between the sofa and the table. you don’t even notice until a staff member comes by your ceo and looks at you strangely.
the staff bows and announces that lunch is ready as you struggle to your feet, embarrassed that you’ve completely made yourself at home in the middle of his living room.
“oooh, what’s for lunch?” your ceo looks up at the staff member with puppy eyes, and it makes your gut churn. who is this man and what did he do with my ceo?
“three course meal, including ribeye steak with mushroom sauce and lobster, mr lee.”
you shoot your ceo a look of shock at the sound of the menu.
“done by mrs jung, i assume?” he raises a brow, now standing up and patting down his black blazer, buttoning the base of his clothes. you fit your heels onto your feet, and you couldn’t help but wonder if the lunch had been catered for you, or he was going to kick you out of his penthouse.
you liked the first option, though the second would be more realistic and at least it’ll tell you that your ceo hasn’t been kidnapped and replaced by aliens.
“yes, mr lee. she also prepared a red for you to pair with the steak, but she’s aware that you have a guest and you tend to be more particular about it when you do.”
your ceo turns to look at you, and you swore a small smile appeared on his lips at the sight of you awkwardly sitting on the sofa.
“open the 1950 Chateau Latour,” he instructs the staff member, leaning forward to the table and carefully gathering the sheets of paper. he looks at you again, looking like he was making a decision in his head.
“and get me a pair of house slippers for her. i don’t want her heels making noises all around the house.”
you let everything go with the flow, and soon you found your heels being taken away into some secret storage room near the lift. your feet were then presented with a pair of cotton slippers you’ve never felt so comfortable in. you were so happily engrossed in the attention of the house staff that were helping you that you don’t realise your ceo already ran off to somewhere else in the penthouse.
you were aggressively thanking the staff for giving you the most comfortable slippers ever when you see him emerge from a hallway behind the kitchen you didn’t even notice from before. he was leaning against the corner of the wall, head resting on the brown surface as he watched you awkwardly bow to the staff members and childishly slide your way over to him.
you had no clue how you were so comfortable in his house. maybe it was the difference in the way he treated his own staff, and maybe it was the way they treated you that made you feel so at home.
sure, you weren’t used to such a pampered lifestyle, but you expected worse.
“i thought i was going to need a microphone to get you to come eat,” your ceo pushes himself off the wall and keeps his arms folded across his chest. standing right next to him made you feel kind of short, now that you weren’t wearing your heels. you back up a little, suddenly letting the fact that you were in your ceo’s house get to your head.
“sorry.”
you hear him offer a tiny laugh under his breath, and you watch as his feet turn away and walk down the hallway. you trail after him, now only noticing that there was a single pair of doors to the right, between two family portraits.
you try to make out the faces under the dim, amber lighting now that you were away from the glass window, but he pushes the door open to a dining room. beyond the large table was a similar glass panel, but right above your heads hung a gorgeous chandelier with the light from outside reflecting off the crystals and painting diamonds on the walls.
your ceo strolls in, and you follow closely behind, eyes still adjusting to all the details in the dining area.
“you really didn’t need to be so extravagant with lunch and all--” you try to show your appreciation as the staff pulls out the chairs for the two of you and lay a napkin in your lap.
“save it,” he interrupts. again, he wasn’t looking at you, but nodding at the staff members for helping him with the chair and the napkin. “i don’t have people over often because i don’t like it. today was just an exception because i had an important call to make and other things to attend to that i couldn’t do in office without losing my bet.”
an awkward pause.
“and i feel bad for making you leave office just to accommodate me, so take this as a token of appreciation or gratitude or whatever you want to believe it is.”
you stifle a smile, but fail miserably.
maybe an alien really kidnapped your boss, but you liked this version better anyway.
you expected lunch to be boring and quiet, but all he does is call out for different staff members and offer them bits and pieces of his food, even asking mrs jung, the chef, to whip up snacks and dishes for them to eat.
you’d be lying if you said it wasn’t heartwarming to see this side of him.
you see him laugh and smile while communicating with his staff members, and they genuinely looked happy to be here. you’d totally expect them to be scared or worried about making a mistake, but never does your boss once falter even when one of the staff member nearly drops a plate while clearing them off the table.
you were finally done with dessert and you could feel your pants tighten around your waist as you sit up. your boss was just calmly wiping his mouth with the napkin before politely handing it over to a staff member to clear.
soon, you found yourself back in his living room, tummy filled and heart satisfied. your boss was nowhere to be seen, and you assume he was off chit-chatting with the staff members. the food coma was slowly sinking in and the warmth from the wine was making you more comfortable, when the same staff from before you gave you the slippers showed up next to the sofa with a set of clothes.
“miss?”
you jerk at the call, and you immediately sit up.
“uh...” you blink, confused at the sight. you were starting to think this was all a dream and that none of it was real. maybe the coffee you had a little off was wonky and now you’re just hallucinating--
“i told mr lee that you looked uncomfortable... so i asked him if it was okay that we got you a more comfortable set.”
“oh!” you exclaim in surprise. you hop to your feet, unsure if you should take the clothes. “i... wouldn’t it be strange if i did...?”
“it’ll be worse if he catches you being uncomfortable, trust me.” she smiles at you, kindly stretching the clothes out to you.
it was so strange, and you don’t think the word “strange” would’ve cut it.
the clothes fit you almost perfectly, the staff were working around you like you lived here, and your boss was nowhere in sight.
it’s almost like you walked into an alternate dimension and you were just living a life that you could only dream of.
you walk out of the over-sized walk-in wardrobe and bathroom after the staff makes sure you’re comfortable and return to the living room, the case files still strewn about and his stacked nicely. a staff was waiting by the sofa, so you could only guess that he must’ve had some kind of message from your boss.
“mr lee will be stuck in his office for most of his day. he has requested for you to stay for as long as you need before you finish whatever you need to do with the case files. here’s a note that he told me to pass to you.”
the information and the rest of the ideas you need to connect the dots and wrap up the case are all already in the file. whatever you told me this morning made sense so i trust that you’ll be able to finish up on your own.
i’ve already informed mrs jung of your possible stay for dinner, so stay if you work past 8pm.
if you live too far away and you’re uncomfortable with taking public transport home, you can stay over for the night if you need to as well.
my staff and chauffeurs get off work at 6pm so i’m not going to ask them to send you home.
you look up at the staff member, for the umpteenth time today, wondering: what the fuck?
you sigh to yourself as the staff member leaves you with all the work on the table. the obligation to finish whatever you could today washes over you as you realise what you were really here to do.
he never wanted to take credit for your work. instead, he was letting you take his. as you scan through all his notes and research, you realise that it was more than enough to help you close the case, even if you didn’t win it.
there was no name on any of his research papers, compared to your worksheets that he made you write your name on every day. so if you were to compile all the information yourself, he was giving you the green light of finishing the case on your own.
you couldn’t help but to let the guilt grow inside you, as you realise that you had been so easily fooled by the way he treated you. though it made no sense that he was such a horrible boss on first sight, you come to terms with the fact that maybe he wasn’t that bad after all.
LATER THAT EVENING
you jerk awake at one of those strange sensations of falling in your sleep, then it hits you.
you fell asleep.
your neck was aching, and you pull away from the table, the sheets of paper stuck to your arms as you shift yourself from the horrible sleeping position. the sky outside was darkening, leaving only red and orange streaks across the sky. you look down at your work, letting the satisfaction fill your lungs once you realised that you were done with the case.
even if you lost, it was because the stupid company thought doing whatever it did was a good idea.
but with your boss’ workings, you might actually have a shot at winning the case.
you struggle to your feet, noticing the lack of commotion around the house. you search for a clock somewhere, and it was already past 6.15pm, which meant all the house staff were gone.
the house was so quiet, and you couldn’t help but wonder if he ever felt lonely living here on his own.
such a big space, but for one person only.
you remember the portraits outside the dining hall, so you don’t hesitate to stride over in your comfy cotton slippers, in your warm clothes provided by him to check out the portraits.
you squint your eyes, the terrible lighting ridding you of any ability to actually see anything constructive out of the portraits. you didn’t want to turn on the lights because you didn’t want to get caught snooping around in his house, but the light flickers on anyway, and you raise your arm in a bid to shield your eyes from the sudden illumination.
“had a nice nap?” you look to your left where the living room area was, and he was changed out of his black fitting, now in a more comfortable blazer and cotton shirt and what looked like... joggers?
“thank you...” you quietly say, your hands fiddling with each other on your stomach. “for your workings and pointers.”
he tilts his head upwards a little at your display of gratitude, his eyes travelling from you to the portraits that he had caught you staring at just moments ago.
“you want to know why i wasn’t in office for the last six months since he handed me the law firm?”
you look up at his question, taken aback that he would even bring it up.
“it’s because i didn’t want it. he gave it to me without telling me, but i was ready to run off a live a life for myself. i’ve already arranged for myself to go overseas and do charity work for the next year at the point of time he said he wanted to let go of the firm. i said, ‘no, you’ve worked so hard for it’. and the next day, he signs everything to me.”
you listen carefully, hearing an unfamiliar tone in his voice. he went from slightly spiteful, to sad, to obligatory, and you could tell just how mixed his emotions were. you turn to look at the portraits, and you now see that they were portraits of him and his family.
“after he gave me the firm, i moved out here alone. i couldn’t stand the sight of him because he just went ahead and did something he knew i didn’t want to do. he knew i just wanted to do charity and work on that, not take over his law firm. in the end, i left and i was away in countries like cambodia, myanmar and other countries helping to build schools and hospitals.”
you return your attention to him, failing to notice that he was now only about a metre away from you. your hands hug your torso as you search his face for any more emotion than the one he had plastered on for the last few minutes.
“so you spent six months away, doing charity work... and you came back because of obligation.”
your words seem to strike a chord in him, because he immediately looks away, almost like he realised he had been seen through.
he sucks in a deep breath, running his hand through his now soft, un-waxed hair.
“i’m sorry, for being such an ass when we first met,” he looks at you with the same movement as he always does: looking at your through the corners of his eyes. “i was just angry and frustrated at how things turned out, and now i’m stuck with this stupid law firm just ‘cause i said he worked so hard for it.”
you offer him a weak smile, reaching out carefully to pat him on the shoulder. it was awkward, but you could only hope it brought him comfort.
what you don’t prepare yourself for was when he shifts forward, suddenly connecting his lips to yours.
you shiver upon the contact, pulling away in surprise as your eyes scan his for any sign of remorse or regret.
your heart was racing and you’ve got absolutely no clue why.
was it the way his eyes were digging your soul out of your body? was it the way you felt so comfortable around him today, despite him being a mean shit to you the day you met him?
but almost instinctively, you reach up and wrap your hands around the back of his neck to pull him in again, this time shutting your eyes as you tasted him.
he shoves you against the wall, hand behind your head so you don’t injure yourself and he picks you up, using the wall as support to keep your legs wrapped around his waist.
the kisses were sharp, harsh, hungry.
never in a million years were you expecting this.
his fingers dig into your hips and trails them along your legs, pushing them inwards so they were securely wrapped around his waist as he walks the both of you to the living room.
you wonder how he was able to gently lay you on the sofa despite your body weight clinging to his torso, but he does it anyway and every thought disappears from your head when he plants soft kisses on your neck. his hands were roaming your stomach and looking for your hips, holding them up as he set his pelvis between your thighs.
you could feel his bulge growing under the material as he kissed and nibbled on the skin of your neck, careful not to leave any marks.
“if you’re not okay with this, please tell me.” he whispers into your ear, stopping for a moment.
“i’m fine. i’m just... surprised, that’s all.”
he pulls back and looks at you with eyes that you’d be afraid of two weeks ago, but now all they do is create more butterflies in your stomach.
“i just... it’s been so long since someone’s seen through me like this. after sang yeon told me about you working till late... and that you look tired even at work but you never once fall asleep... it reminded me of me when i first became a lawyer.”
your heart shatters at his little speech, and your hand reaches up to brush his cheek.
“watching you work reminded me of why i even became a lawyer. you... you’re my restart button, and you make me want to work again.”
a smile breaks out on your lips and tears threaten to collect in your eyes. the sincerity in his voice was what told you that this man was vulnerable after all. you offer him comfort by pulling his face down and kissing him, letting fate decide whatever should happen next...
you were jerked awake for the second time that evening, but this time you were in juyeon’s arms, skin against skin under the blanket that you don’t even remember seeing even while he fucked you mindlessly against his expensive couch.
you let the sound process in your brain, when you realise your phone was going off in your suitcase.
juyeon wakes up from his lazy slumber too, grabbing his bottoms and pulling them on carelessly while he heads for your suitcase. his eyes were still closed when he picks up the call, and you couldn’t help but admire his back muscles.
“hello? oh, yeah. no, she’s not kidnapped, she’s still with me. yeah... no... yes, it’s your boss...”
your eyes widen once you realise who was on the other end of the line. you wrap the blanket around yourself and surge forward to snatch the phone away from juyeon and you press the phone to your ear without thinking twice.
“chanhee...”
“okay... WHAT THE FUCK?!”

Misguided Ghost ~ Zak Bagans Ch. 10
A/N: Hey everyone! I hope you are all doing well! Student teaching, plus class and working on my TPA's is insane right now! My cooperating teacher decided to forgo the original plans for her 3rd graders in math, and tasked me with making the lessons for this week from scratch...and I'm being observed later today. Distance learning has been interesting to say the least lol
I am working on the next chapter of my Nathan MacKinnon story so hopefully I have that out around Friday/this weekend!
Enjoy!

Chapter 9
Catching Flights and Feelings
“Mia, have you researched anything on Mickey’s Tavern in Georgia yet?” Zak asked as he walked into my office Monday morning, a week after being back from my first lockdown. Things have been back to normal between Zak and I, if you call what we had before normal. I could tell he was getting used to me being around and the snarky comments had subsided. He spent most of the days walking between my office and his, usually to end up sitting on the other side of my desk with his laptop. I had placed a new air diffuser with the same scent I had in his office, but he still said it wasn’t the same and would just stay in my office. Aaron has been teasing me, but I just brush it off.
I nodded and held up a pile of papers while I was reading through an article for a different location. Zak took them from me and sat down in his newly claimed spot in my office. Once I finished the article and highlighted what I thought stood out, I looked over my laptop at him. “Why did you want that one? I’ve done research on like 10 other locations that came in before them,” I asked, curious because he hasn’t before asked me for information on a specific site. Zak sighed and looked up from the papers. “The owner emailed me last night, then called me this morning. I guess the activity is really becoming too much to where it’s affecting his business. He was hoping we could investigate it sooner rather than later,” Zak informed me. I nodded. “Ok so, I researched that one on Friday and from what I can remember the reports are kind of crazy. Are we going to go?” I asked, taking a sip of my tea. Zak smirked at me. “Crazy is what we do here Mia. Nervous?” he asked. I laughed at his tease, as I knew now he didn’t mean anything by it. “Put me in coach,” I smirked back. Zak let out a chuckle and with a wink, left my office to presumably tell the others. ~ ~ ~ Two days later we were all at the airport, waiting to board. I had just met Jay Wasley and he seemed nice. Our flight was at 6:30 in the morning, which means I had woken up at about 3:30 to make sure I was ready when Zak and Aaron picked me up at 4:30. I was listening to my music while everyone did their own thing when Nick walked up to me and nudged my foot with his as he sat across the aisle from me. I opened my eyes and saw him holding out a tray of coffee, with one marked as a decaf pumpkin spice latte. I smiled and reached for it. “Bless your soul sir,” I said, Nick laughed and handed everyone else their drinks. Zak came over and sat next to me. “So you do drink coffee?” he asked, taking a sip of his. I smiled and shrugged. “Decaf when I know I can handle it,” I informed him. He gave me a quizzical look. “What do you mean by that?” I sighed, debating if I should tell him the whole truth. I didn’t mind talking about my anxiety, but it was also a conversation I try to avoid at times. “Caffeine messes with my anxiety. In grad school I developed really bad separation anxiety from my family. I had no one in San Francisco and apparently that is not good for me. I was already stressed out with school that everything just came to a head and I actually would get sick all the time and lost about 20 pounds. It was to the point I would shake and feel light headed when I didn’t eat at regular intervals. I stopped drinking coffee and I was able to manage it better. Turns out I always had separation anxiety when I looked back to elementary school with my mom. No one just really talked about it then,” I looked down at my coffee, unsure of what his response would be. “Do you need to eat something now? I can get you a bagel or something,” Zak asked softly. I looked back at him and he looked a bit concerned. I laughed lightly. “No, I’m better now. I gained a few pounds back when I got home from school and it helped. Also keeping myself busy and being around friends takes my mind off of it so, hence why I can drink decaf at least. Thank you though,” I smiled at him. “Oh so we’re friends now?” he teased me, and I bumped into his shoulder. “Well I was talking more about Aaron, but I guess I would consider you an acquaintance” I teased back. Zak put his hand to his heart in fake hurt. “Ow! Ok, I see how it is.” He laughed. “But seriously, that doesn’t sound great. Why chose to come to Vegas and leave your family again?” “It was time to branch out again. I don’t want my anxiety to control me, and it honestly isn’t as bad as others. I’m lucky that way. Plus, I figured a three in a half hour drive from home was better than a seven in a half one so I thought I would give it go,” I explained. Zak nodded. “Well, thanks for sharing that. I’m sure I didn’t help in the beginning,” he said, looking a little upset with himself. I was starting to see the guy away from the cameras that Aaron had told me about, and I wanted to see more.             “Not really. But you’ve gotten better,” I smiled at him. He chuckled and took another sip as our boarding time was called out.
    Perks of traveling for the Travel Channel, business class seats! Instead of being crammed in a three-seat row, we had spacious two seat rows and I was ready for our nonstop four-hour flight to Atlanta, Georgia. I sat next to the window as Aaron sat next to me as our tickets stated. Zak and Nick were in front of us, with Billy and Jay across the aisle. Aaron settled into his seat, then turned to look at me. I was staring out the window, but I could feel his eyes on me. I turned to him and raised my eyebrow. “Can I help you?”
      “You and Zak seem to be getting cozy,” he whispered with a smirk. I looked toward Zak and he had his headphones in so I don’t think he heard. Looking back at Aaron, he had a look on his face like he knew what I was thinking.             “We’re just becoming friends. Leave it alone,” I whispered hissed at him. Aaron rolled his eyes but kept his smile. I laughed and shook my head, looking back toward the window. I felt him shift next to me and when I turned to look, he was leaning forward tapping Zak on the shoulder. I stared at him thinking he wasn’t doing what I thought he was. Oh…but he was.
      “Bro I need to talk to Nick about something. Mind switching?” Aaron asked Zak. Zak looked at me as I tried to hid in the hood of my jacket and hoped my cheeks weren’t too red. I wanted to shove Aaron.
        “Not at all,” I heard Zak say. I looked up as they switched and Aaron winked at me. I shook my head slightly, then tried to smile when Zak took a seat. “Hope you don’t mind,” Zak said with that charming smile of his. I shook my head and smiled back, bringing my knees up to my chest as we got comfortable and ready for takeoff.
       About an hour into the flight, I had drifted off to sleep only to be woken with a start when the plane became bumpy and the captain came over the speakers to ask all passengers to put their seatbelts on. I looked around with wide eyes and Zak must have realized I had no clue what was going on. “Hey, hey it’s ok. We just hit some turbulence,” he said, reaching for my hand. I let him intertwine our fingers as my heart started to slow back down. I smiled lightly at him, slightly embarrassed by my panic.
    “Sorry,” I said quietly. He smiled and shook his head.
      “Don’t be,” he stated, and went back to looking at his phone. I looked down at our hands and I could feel myself start to blush. It was strangely comforting knowing he was right there. I squeezed his hand reflexively as the plane gave another jolt. It’s not like I’ve never been through turbulence on a plane before, but it still didn’t mean that I liked it. Zak gave a reassuring squeeze to my hand and put his phone down, shifting his body so he was facing me more. “Why don’t you tell me about the history of this bar we’re going to,” he asked lightly.             “I’m ok, honestly,” I said, feeling bad I took him away from what he was doing before. Zak smiled.
     “Who said I was doing this for your benefit?” he winked. I rolled my eyes but smiled none the less. I quietly began listing off what I remembered about the site, Zak asking questions here and there. Thirty minutes later the seatbelt sign was turned off again but Zak didn’t let go of my hand, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t make me feel like there were butterflies in my stomach.             About an hour later, we were getting ready to land. Only then Zak let go of my hand to put his backpack away and I couldn’t stop myself from feeling slightly disappointed. Though we had started talking about the location, we then started talking about music and concerts we’ve been to, and just life in general. We were really starting to get to know each other, and I was happy he was trusting me enough to open up.
      Once off the plane, we claimed our luggage and all the tech equipment, heading off to the rental car area. Because there were 6 of us and many bags, we ended up with two SUVs. Billy and Jay in one with all the tech equipment, and the rest of us in the other with the luggage. I sat in the back with Aaron as Nick drove and Zak was in the passenger seat. I was watching Aaron as he was trying to hid his phone from me, but kept looking up with a goofy smile. I laughed at him as my phone and Zak’s both rang with a notification. Aaron gave me a huge smile as I looked at him suspiciously. “I’m scared to look at that,” I whispered and Zak shot around.
        “Dude, seriously?” he didn’t seem mad or irritated, just slightly chuckled and shook his head. I looked between the two of them. Oh God…I picked up my phone and saw the Instagram notification that Aaron had tagged me in a post. I opened it up and my jaw dropped. Crap…
Aarongoodwin: The newbie can’t handle early morning travel #ghostadventures #travelbuddies #adoptedlilsis
Above the caption was a picture that Aaron shot over his head with him making a laughing face. I was fast asleep on Zak’s shoulder, with my knees curled up to my chest and leaning in his direction as well. Zak looked unphased, face in his phone, not noticing what Aaron was up to. To be honest, the picture was cute. But I was slightly mortified. What is Zak thinking? What are the fans going to think? Aaron just posted the picture two minutes ago and it already had over 400 likes and 53 comments. But one stood out.
Realzakbagans: What can I say? I make a good pillow. I looked up to see Zak watching me. When I caught his eyes he winked at me, then turned back around. I laughed and shook my head.
NotMiaThermopolis: OMG! @realzakbagans sorry! @aarongoodwin I hate you. #notamorningpersonBoth Zak and Aaron checked their phones at the same time. Zak let out a bark like laugh as Aaron yelled “Hey!” Nick stopped at a red light and turned toward us.
        “Will someone please fill me in?” he asked. Zak showed him the post and he started laughing. “Ok, that is a cute picture though. I will have my two cents in about it once we get to the hotel.” I looked at Aaron and shook my head as he gave me puppy dog eyes.
   “You suck,” I laughed and smiled at him. He gave me a big smile as we all settled back into our seats for the hour drive out of Atlanta.

Moving in had proven to be a harder task than Donna first thought but at the same time it turned out to be a pleasant one too. Unpacking her stuff meant that she got to find things she had considered long lost. Her life had not been always easy but Donna soon discovered that with time only the good moments were forever stuck in her memory. Her cherished musicals collection gave her a bittersweet feeling, proud of having so many but as it had always been, they also made her think of her mother. That lovely woman who she had got to know only through her grandparents’ stories. Donna had always felt close to her mother while watching musicals, especially those that her grannie told her were her mother’s favorites. Finding her precious fuchsia pin though was a whole different experience. She had loved that thing, she remembered how she used to wear it all the time. She could recall especially one particular night when she had been wearing that.
When Donna was a teenager, she had started dyeing her hair. The color changed from time to time and when she met Bane, she had been settled on pink hair for a while. According to the hair color, Donna arranged her wardrobe, makeup and accessories. So, she used a sparkly glittery fuchsia clip to hold her baby hair back during that time. The way they met wasn’t a conventional one and neither was the first night they spent together. She reckoned she had been startled and confused, maybe even a little scared. However, now that her mind brought her back to that moment, she couldn’t help but smile fondly at the memory as it played through her mind.
17 March, St Patrick day. Even if Donna had Irish blood in her veins, she couldn’t help but feel indifferent at the festivity. If it hadn’t been for a colleague that had mentioned it to her, she wouldn’t have even remembered it. She had always cherished her Irish heritage knowing how important it had been for her grandparents. Donna was aware that she owed everything to those lovely people and that’s why she had always taken part in the festivities regarding this very day when she was at home. However, since their death and her departure from Ireland, she couldn’t connect to that part of herself anymore. She found it very painful to do so and so locked it stayed, barely acknowledged.
There was something that she used to do with her grandparents on this day that she still did though, a sort of ritual. She didn’t know why but St Patrick day had always been taken by her grannie as a way to celebrate her mother. So, every year they would watch one, or a few, of her favorite films. That’s why Donna had grown up to love musicals, it was inevitable really. Even if she couldn’t seem to be able to cherish her Irish heritage anymore, she couldn’t renounce of that tradition. And so that’s where she was that night when unbeknownst to her, her whole life changed, on her bed singing along to “Mamma Mia”’s songs. At first, she had been too into her karaoke session to notice what was happening behind her. From her bedroom window, Bane was crawling in, trying not to damage his body more than it already was. He didn’t know how or why but Catwoman’s blow didn't kill him. It only left him to wake up in a lot of pain, even more than he was used to bear, and with numerous wounds that needed to be taken care of. The sight before him was rather… unusual. He had expected to be met with screams of fear, tears or a shocked expression even. Instead, Bane was met with the sight of Donna performing along with the actors on the screen. She was absolutely off-key but Bane was amused anyway. When he sat down on her window seat, groaning from the pain and holding his side, that was when Donna spun around startled by the noise he made and froze on the spot. She didn’t indulge in gossip but his face was one that everyone in Gotham knew. After the failed revolution it was almost impossible not to know him. Donna couldn’t help but feel scared at the sight of his masked face. Her mind instantly linked him with the uproar and the danger he put the city in. Not that Donna loved Gotham but she certainly cared for her life. Forcing her mind to work and not give up on her, she took him in. The side he was holding in his hand was bleeding and the mask, his distinctive trait, was damaged.
“Never thought of getting into Hollywood? I’m sure you’d make it.” His voice sounded strange. Strained, muffled. Probably because of the pain he was in and the mask on his mouth.
“What are you doing here?” She found herself asking, completely disregarding his words.
“As you can see I’m in need of a little help.” Bane simply said, silently asking her to clean his wounds.
“I’m not a doctor nor a nurse.”
“I’ll just need a first aid kit and somewhere to stay.” He resolutely told her and Donna couldn’t do much other than supplying him with what he had asked.
Sitting on her bed, she observed him cleaning and bandaging his own wounds in fascination. Donna could barely clean a scratch on her knees without flinching and here it was, an almost fatally wounded man in front of her that was taking care of himself without batting an eye. Bane could feel her eyes on him but continued to act none the wiser. This little woman was taking it well, better than he first expected. He figured that staring at him wasn’t a big of a deal. He was used to being at the centre of attention anyway.
Much to his surprise, when he wrapped the last bandage on his body, she got up and gathered everything he had used to clean after him. Before leaving the room, she almost imperceptibly pointed with her head to the bed she previously had been sitting on. Bane didn’t wait for her to ask twice, so that’s where Donna found him when she returned to the room. He heard her soft steps on the carpet but didn’t open his eyes to acknowledge her. However, his eyes snapped open when he felt the bed dip beside him. Donna was standing on her knees at his side, holding up something in her hands that he later identified as duck tape. Ever so timidly, she pointed to his mask and he understood that she was asking him permission to touch it.
“It probably won’t do much but your mask is broken. I can put the pieces together. Until you find a permanent solution.” Donna had never spoken so softly before and didn’t even know why she was almost whispering now. Like she was talking with a wild beast, afraid that if she spoke too loud she would startle her and made her attack her.
His mask was off-limits, everyone knew. However, Bane felt himself nodding before he could register what he was doing. This little lady was certainly… one of a kind. Not only she hadn’t screamed or tried to hurt him but was also trying to help him. Was she too kind or just insane? Bane couldn’t know, having only met her, but her hands on his face were gentle and unthreatening, he decided. Her touch then left his face and after a few seconds, he heard her leave the bed only to return right away with her laptop. She laid next to him, Bane didn’t know whether it was for keeping an eye on him or checking in on him, put her headphones in and pressed play.
Trying not to let her know, he glanced at the screen but wasn’t able to recognize the film she was watching. He knew it was a musical though, seeing as there were people dancing and singing. He closed his eyes again, trying to relax and didn’t open them even when he heard her whispers. It seemed that she wasn’t doing a good job at preventing herself from singing along, not that Bane minded. Even if his eyes were closed, his ears were always listening in to see if there was any danger approaching. He knew that there were men looking for him and in the state he was in, he couldn’t put up much of a fight. And the lady… well, he didn’t really think her capable of fighting against mercenaries, nevermind the police. The only thing that he could hear were the words that would leave her mouth from time to time. Until he heard it. The lock of her main door squeaked. Someone was trying to break in, he concluded opening his eyes.
Tapping on her shoulder, he got her attention. Turning to him, she removed one headphone and looked questioningly at him.
“Someone’s is trying to break in.” He said calmly trying to not make her panic. To his surprise she didn’t, she only nodded and got out of bed. She walked in her bathroom, opened her shower and put on some music. Walking back into her room, she strolled over the side of her bed where he was resting and helped him get off.
Trying to support as much of his weight as she could, Donna let him wrap one of his big arms around her shoulders and together they slowly limped towards the bathroom. The small walk tired them both, Bane was still weak from the blow and the blood loss while Donna was simply not used to lift something, or in this case, someone, that heavy. She gently helped him so that he was sitting on the edge of her bathtub that could also be used as a shower and turned around to lock the door. When she faced him again, she was met with an inquisitory stare. Bane wasn’t in the state to physically stop her, so he had followed her in the bathroom, but was still able to understand that her plan, if she even had one, simply was going to fail.
“They are looking for you. When they don’t find you here and see that I’m in the shower, they’re just going to go away.” She hoped so at least. Getting into the tub first, she gently turned him around, lifting his legs one at a time so that he was still sitting but was now in the tub. This time, she took both of his arms and wrapped them around her neck, while hers went around his waist. With her feet firmly planted on the ground of the tub, she crunched a little, to give herself a little push to make him stand up. She knew that she couldn’t possibly hold him like this for more than 5 seconds, so she swiftly pivoted. Holding him up with the help of the wall, they were standing close, too close. Their skin touching but their faces apart given the height difference. Donna tried not to think too much about it. They were just doing what was necessary to escape death after all. It didn’t mean anything. Her skin wasn’t reacting funny at his touch. It was for the strain she was putting her muscles through. His breath hadn’t stopped because she was close to him. It’s just that he was in pain. Then, in hope to make her plan work, she started to sing along to the song that was playing.
However, much to Donna’s dread and Bane’s not-at-all surprise, the men didn’t stop at the empty house or at the implication of the water running and loud music playing. When it came to Bane, they weren’t taking any chances. Only standing at his corpse, they would stop. Bane was perfectly aware of their way of thinking because it was also his and a shiver run through his spine at the thought of what was going to happen. No matter how many times he had defeated death, he wasn’t immortal and it seemed that his time had come much sooner than he would have liked. He had never been afraid of death. He had even embraced it, planned for it when he took Gotham. His only regret was that it had to be this way, at the hand of worthless men rather than for a noble cause.
When he heard the door lock creak yet again, his eyes involuntarily moved to the petit body of his unlikely rescuer. He wouldn’t go as far as to say that he cared about her, because then he would be lying. And Bane was above lies. He had never been ungrateful though and was perfectly aware that if it hadn’t been for her, he probably would have died on that filthy road. He didn’t care for her but was mildly sad that she would die in this way. She seemed like a nice person. He knew she was kind and that was a rare thing in this wretched world. She was also full of surprises, he would come to find out. As a matter of fact, when he glanced down at her, the fire and resolution in her eyes startled him. Bane couldn’t possibly know but in her mind, all the different scenarios of what could happen in the next minutes were playing and she was doing her best to try and figure out a way where both of them would come out alive. She would be damned if she’d let those men hurt her, let alone kill her. Completely unaware of Bane’s eyes on her, she slightly nodded to herself when she decided the plan of action.
“Stay here and don’t move,” she told him firmly before hopping out of the tub. Quickly drying her legs, she hid behind the door. Even if they blasted it, and she knew that they would, there was still enough space for her to hide and wait for the right moment to strike. It was in moments like these that she was thankful for her stature. She would push the door right back in their faces, startling them and if she was lucky even sending them back on their asses, as soon as they would open the door.
Her previous plan hadn’t worked but fortunately, this one did. As she predicted, the blow of the door in their faces did startle the intruders but it wasn’t strong enough to make them fall down. Opening the door again, she took advantage of the startled man. Grabbing the hand that was holding a gun, she pulled it to her and closed the door on him at the same time. This time the blow was strong enough to have at least dislocated his wrist and to make him lose the grip on the gun. With her hand still wrapped around the man’s wrist, Donna let the gun drop to the floor and slammed the door on his head again. When she loosened her grip she was met with the comforting noise of his body falling on the floor. Donna wasn’t sure if they had realized what was going on or if they thought it was Bane attacking them. Anyway, she needed to use everything she had to her advantage. Now that the element of surprise was gone she had to think quick on her feet. However, the door shook again preventing her to formulate any kind of plan.
She didn’t know how many men there were outside but when the door busted open again she couldn’t do much except for fighting. Hiding the gun she already had in the waistband of her pants, she braced herself just in time. She could only see other two men beside the one that was still k.o. on the floor. The one that entered first, pointed a gun at her head but before he could fire, Donna thrusted his arm to the ceiling, the shot wasted in the air while she swiftly jabbed him in the guts and in the neck with her elbow. When the man bent in two, she graciously let her knee and his nose get acquainted. Blood sprayed everywhere and even if she didn’t hear it crack because of the music, she knew she had broken his nose. When she spotted at the corner of her eyes that the other man was ready to shoot her, she let her instincts take over her. Pushing the wounded bleeding man to the door knocking him out, she pivoted on herself doing a 360-degree angle with her leg and kicked him in the face. Donna didn’t know what had possessed her to make her act like this, she didn’t even know she could be that flexible. It had been ages since her last martial arts class. She still got it apparently, she mused while she looked as the last man fell down with satisfaction.
Too busy catching her breath and disarming the men while making sure that they stayed out cold, she didn’t notice that the shower had been shut down and that Bane was standing behind her, leaning against the door frame.
“You knocked out three of my men.” He observed. Was that admiration in his voice? Or maybe astonishment? Donna couldn’t tell.
“Well, why the hell were they trying to kill me?” She didn’t feel accusation in his voice but felt the need to defend herself all the same.
“I believe they were trying to rescue me and thought of you as a threat.”
“A threat? Have you seen me?” she scoffed, “ you should recruit less stupid men.” She concluded while walking to him to help him back to the bed.
“You did manage to knock three fully trained mercenaries out cold.” Bane pointed out as a matter of fact and this time Donna could spot the amazement in his voice.
“Didn’t I tell you about my taekwondo skills?” she acted none the wiser and laid back next to him. Bane snorted in amusement even though Donna didn’t hear. His mask emitted a constant low hiss, muffling a lot of his sounds.
“Why didn’t you fight me then?” He had been wondering since she started fighting the men. He didn’t think it possible but this little lady kept surprising him.
“My grandfather always used to say: know when to back off Donna, don’t be like Napoleon at Waterloo.” She explained with a soft smile recalling all the times her beloved grandparent would tell her those exact words. He had been a history teacher and was especially interested in the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte.
“You were Waterloo, even in your state.” she pointed out. Fighting those men had been all about survival. They were trying to take her out so she acted before they could return the favor. With Bane, it had been different. He was hurt and needed help. As long as she provided for him, she knew she didn’t have anything to fear from him. And also that he could strangle her with minimum strength and bare hands.
That night had surprised both her and Bane. She still couldn’t believe what she did. She had been trained to fight but never in that kind of situation. Where both her life and his were at stake. Sure, after that her muscles had been sore for days but it was the least that could happen. She had even feared to have strained something at one point. Fortunately, it was just that she was out of practice. However, she could still feel the pride she felt whenever Bane looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time. It was a really nice first impression, probably her best one. Lost in her memories, she didn’t hear the man of the hour walking behind her.
“Are you having trouble unpacking?” Bane asked her when he noticed her standing still in front of an open box.
“Oh no, I’ve just found something that brought me back,” Donna explained glancing at him over her shoulder, holding the clip up so that he could see. Not that she thought he would remember it or anything. And yet, little did Donna know, that Bane recognized the hair accessory indeed. Only that it brought him back to a completely different time. A sadder memory. A moment in their relationship of which he wasn’t really proud. One that if he could go back, would prevent from happening. But one that Bane knew, looking back to it after five years, helped them made the little jump they needed to bring their relationship to the next level.
Both Bane and Donna had never been fans of labels. Especially when it came to them, they much preferred living in the moment rather than risking ruining what they had by putting it in a box. Despite everything, it was safe to say that they had grown close. Very close. So close that they were now able to enjoy the comfort that only intimacy between two people that shared a bond could bring. As a matter of fact, after sex, they laid together in bed, both of them on their sides so that they were facing each other. One of Bane’s arms was under Donna head acting as a pillow, while the other rested on her back, slowly stroking the skin there. Donna was pretty much draped over him, one of her legs was over his waist and her arms held him in a loose embrace. It had always amazed her how smooth his skin was and after touching him for the first time she was also surprised to learn that his skin was soft and warm too. Always full of surprises this man. So they just were there, in each other arms, contently caressing the other. Skin to skin. Neither of their touches was sensual or provocative. Not at first. They were past round 1 and were just basking into the intimacy of the afterglow. But then Bane’s hand moved slowly from her back, where it was resting, to the curve of her ass cheek. Slowly but firmly he gripped her leg that was draped over his wait to secure it there and also move it a little higher so that their cores were now touching. He didn’t enter her yet, not even stroking, he just moved so that they were touching down there too. Donna gasped at the contact she didn’t expect but smiled a little when she felt him getting hard again. This man’s sexual appetite was endless. She didn’t move, allowing him to touch her and enjoying it at the same time. Bane took this as an invitation to proceed and so he did. He swiftly turned her on her back, his arms taking the most of his weight, otherwise, he would have crushed her, and her legs were now around him. Her hands didn’t stop touching him, they only moved to his neck. Donna would never tell him but his neck and his shoulders, so thick and strong, had always aroused her. And since his mouth wasn’t available to her, they took its place when it came to showing him affection and desire.
On Bane’s part though, he had always liked the striking difference in size between them. She was a tiny little thing, not even over 1.60, so infinitely little compared to him who was a bulky mountain of a man. It was no secret that Bane loved power and being in control, Donna had even compared him once to a certain Monica Geller - not that he knew who she was- and the fact that she was so small and that he could so easily manœuvre her and do anything he wanted, was a huge turn-on for him. Little did he know that it was something that aroused Donna as well.
One of his hand, moved from its position beside her head to instead trace her face. He had the habit of gently feeling her lips with his fingers and Donna had always wondered what it meant for him. If it was maybe a way for him to feel them since he couldn’t with his mouth, a kiss of sorts. In any case, she liked it and the way he carefully moved his fingers and his eyes lit up, would always make Donna curse in her mind at the fact that she couldn’t kiss him. His fingers then moved over her neck. They had been intimate for a while now and she had come to learn that he was as dominant in bed as he was in life and that one of his kinks was choking. Not used to it at first, Donna was, of course, startled and even a bit scared by the threat of his large hand on her throat. But for some unknown reason, she trusted him not to hurt her. And up until now, he didn’t give her a reason for her not to. However, his fingers didn’t wrap themselves around her neck as she expected but instead continued moving to her chest, where he felt her collarbone.
“Look at you, so small and yet so willing to take me.”
“Not going to lie, the first time I saw you I thought you were going to break me,” she confessed
“Oh, I could. I very well could break you, so easily. You never resisted me though.”
“I trust you. I know you won’t.” Taking her words in, Bane didn’t know what surprised him more, the fact that she genuinely believed that or that she trusted him. He didn’t stop to consider it though, he knew for certain what those words made him feel and that was what he was going to focus on.
Startling her yet again, both of his hands grabbed her bottom while he made her open up her legs more by leaning over her body. Adjusting her position so that they were perfectly aligned, he only needed to move his hips a little further and then they would be one. And when he did, both of them moaned for the sensation. Despite the fact that they had been doing this for a while, Donna had yet to get completely adjusted to his length. A part of her thought that she never would but fortunately, it wasn’t unbearable. Bane was very aware that their difference in size also meant that she’d take him with difficulty. And even if she had always been willing and never complained, he had always minded the first thrusts. Not too rough or fast. Just a few slow movements to let her walls accommodate him. But when her breath would quicken and her legs’ grip would tighten around him, he knew it was time. Time to finally ravish her. Bane wasn’t a gentle man, and neither was his approach to sex. His hands were strong and would leave marks where they would grip Donna’s skin. His thrusts became more vigorous and deeper, his pube hitting her sensitive bundle of nerves, his legs slapping against her making her move a little on the bed. She knew him though, knew what he liked, so she braced herself and locked her arms around him as well, staying in place this way. Not that his grip on her ass would let her go anywhere.
The rhythm of Bane’s thrusts was always an increasing one: he would start slow to allow her to get used to his length and then, as her moans would be louder and her hands gripped his shoulders harder, he would quicken until the room was filled with the sound of their pelvis slapping and Donna’s broken breath. Bane was delighted to find out that a little thing like Donna was able to take him, even when it seemed that his mission was to break her in two. Donna, on the other hand, wasn’t so shocked to find out that Bane is very vocal in bed. Not in the sense of dirty talking, sometimes he would do that too, but more in the way of asserting his dominance and her submission.
With his head on her neck, where his mask was gracing her skin, he bashed in the sensation of her tight walls around him. Adjusting his position so that he was leaning on her resting his weight on his hands beside her head. That only lasted for a while though, the urge to wrap his hand around her slim neck was too strong.
“ Such a tiny doll, so tight,” he panted in her ear continuing to mercilessly snap his hips on hers, “and yet taking me so well.”
“I wonder if it wasn’t made especially for me.” Applying more pressure on her neck, he stopped his movement with a strong thrust, opting for going deep rather than fast. “No matter because it’s mine.” The possessiveness was loud and clear in his voice but the growl he made while he slowly entered her again left no doubt.
“Am I right, Donna?” His answer was more of a rhetorical one but Donna knew that he liked to hear her answer nevertheless. And she did open her mouth to answer him. She couldn’t though, only a loud gasp left her lips. He set up a pace that he knew was torturing her and making her unable to make any rational thinking. He would slowly pull away, to the point where only his tip was in, be like this for a moment before going in again with a powerful snap of the hips arriving as deep inside her as he could.
He needed to know, needed for her to talk back, needed the reassurance that she was his and only his.
Moving his hand to press his thumb on her clit, he called for her attention again.
“Answer me.” And with that, his thrusts regained speed adding to his fingers stroking her where she was most sensitive, it brought her over the edge.
“Oh my god, Bane!” Donna was in pure ecstasy. Her legs were shaking but didn’t lose their grip on him, while her fingers had painfully gripped his shoulder blades. She was a mess, heart beating so fast that was ready to leave her body and her breath so quick that it seemed she had been running the marathon. Donna knew though that Bane wasn’t finished and that since she hadn’t answered him, she was in for a delicious punishment. That’s what she thought.
Growling at her like an angry fiend, Bane pulled out of her only to hastily turn her on her stomach and re-entering her from behind. Holding her still by wrapping a hand in her hair, he resumed thrusting only this time even more vigorously. Still coming down from her high, Donna was still sensitive and while normally she was able to take Bane’s strength with no fuss, now it was bordering pain.
His hand, resumed its position on her neck gripping hard and pulling her toward him, while hers snapped behind her on his chest to try and tell him silently to slow down. Bane though didn’t seem to notice. He was too far into his mind, set off by her silence, he was soon reminiscing all the time he would catch her laughing or mingling around with men of his army. He had never thought much about it, sure of where her loyalty stood. Now though he wasn’t so sure anymore.
As the thought registered in his mind, he gripped way harder on her neck while increasing his tempo, not aware of how his actions were putting Donna off, until he was snapped out of it by her screams.
“Bane! Bane, stop!” she pleaded, “I don’t want this anymore,” she repeated more vigorously when he didn’t even slow down. The way he gripped her neck, almost choking her, and the way he was mercilessly pounding into her like he was stabbing her in a way, was all too much for her. Donna didn’t know what had set him off but she needed him to stop. She enjoyed it rough but this was just violence. She tried to push him away with her hand when he ignored her and as he got suddenly pulled back to earth, he released her immediately when he registered and her cries for him to get away from her. She fell back on the bed and immediately turned around to face him, holding her knees to her chest so that not even an inch of her skin was touching his. Donna looked at him like he had wounded her, the betray in her eyes painfully evident for him. And for the first time in his life, Bane didn’t know what to say. He realized that he got carried away, lost himself in his emotions and let them control his body. That alone would have been outrageous for him but the fact that she had witnessed this moment of weakness and had even suffered from it, made it even harder for Bane to comprehend his actions. What had gotten over him?
Donna was busy in a train of thought of her own but unbeknownst to her, she was posing herself the same question. What had gotten over him? Okay, that he was usually rough in bed, but this was a different thing. It felt like he really wanted to hurt her, like he wanted to punish her for some reason. That wasn’t rough, it was hate fucking. And Donna didn’t know what to do with that realization. Locked in his bathroom probably wasn’t the best way to deal with this. But what should she do? What could she do? What could have happened to make Bane despise her so? Did something happen or it was just that he got tired of her and wanted to push her away? Did she think that Bane was capable of doing something like that? To be fair, Donna couldn’t say to really know Bane. But she did spend a lot of time with him and she had always thought him to be articulate and upfront. He didn’t seem the type of man to restore to such low acts instead of facing the problem. But what could she know? At the end of the day, you really can’t say to know your partner. Above all, Bane.
They weren’t even partners, Donna sourly considered. What they had was… something for sure but they never stopped and put a label on it. Yes, they were lovers in the sense that they had sex. Very frequently. But was it just that? Were they at least friends? Did he even care about her or was it just physical? Donna had never cared much for labels. As long as there were mutual trust and respect, she didn’t have any problems. But now that those requirements were abruptly missing, she started to question their relationship. If she could even call what they had that way.
She should talk to him. Yes, that was the best thing to do, she concluded. Maybe it was going to be painful and uncomfortable but she had to do it. It was time to cross some T’s and dot some I’s. Once she returned to the bedroom, she discovered that Bane had left just as she did. Disappointment washed over her. She had expected him to be waiting for her to explain. Apparently not. However, shaking her head, she didn’t let this sway her. She needed to talk to him and she would. Even if she had to wait for him. Sure, she could go and look for him but maybe it was best that she waited for him to cool off. An angry Bane wasn’t one to mess with. Not that Donna was scared of him. She had never been scared of him before, certain that he would never hurt her. Now, however, she wasn’t so sure anymore. And despite her best efforts, she couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Maybe it was wrong of her to trust a mercenary this much but she had always been a firm believer in duality. In the sense that she knew that people were complex beings and one couldn’t just put them in a box and expect them to fit in there. One could be more than one thing. And Bane was more than just a mercenary. Now though, she was beginning to question this very fact. Perhaps she had been wrong. Too naive for trusting him so.
Little did she know though, that she had been right all along. Bane was more than just a mercenary. As a matter of fact, he was troubled by what happened. A man who was just a mercenary wouldn’t have been. He knew that Donna probably expected some sort of explanation from him, if not even an apology. He also knew that he owed her that, but he was also aware of the fact that he needed to sort himself out first. How could he explain to her what happened when he was the first one that hadn’t a clue?
Both of them had spent the rest of the day trying to put their thoughts in order. Clueless to the fact that the only way they could really sort themselves and the situation was by talking to the other. And that, unfortunately, didn’t happen. Bane didn’t return to their shared bedroom, choosing to keep himself busy with work instead, and Donna couldn’t find the strength to seek him out. If only she did, she would have put them both out of their misery. She would have spared herself from making a desperate and rushed decision: to pack her bags and leave.
When Bane didn’t come back, she took his action as a way to dismiss her. As a confirmation of her thoughts: he had grown tired of her and had given her a reason to go. He was pushing her away and even if she hated that they couldn't even talk about it before she left, she wasn’t going to impose her presence where she wasn’t wanted. And so, as it began so it ended: with one of them leaving the scene abruptly.
Needless to say, Donna had misunderstood the whole situation. But she couldn’t know what was going on inside Bane’s mind. She could only wonder. And her mind brought her to the wrong conclusion. But she wouldn’t know that she did for a long while. When Bane finally returned to their bedroom, expecting to find her there, he was upset, to say the least when he realized that she was gone. With just a note to notify him.
“Breaking up is never easy I know but I have to go. Here is where the story ends
this is goodbye. Knowing you it's the best I can do.”
That’s what the note said. In perfect Donna’s style, she had broken up with him through a musical song. That notion had made him smile. Since she had forced him to watch the movie with her, he recognized the lyrics and at what point in the movie it came up. And so, as easily as always, he was able to go through her whole thought process and cursed himself when he realized what must have gone through her mind to make her leave. If he had gone back to the room earlier, he would have been able to stop her from jumping to a rushed and wrong conclusion. But he hadn’t and now she was gone.
Bane never really cared to understand what they were. He knew they were fine with each other, he knew Donna trusted him and since that night in Gotham, he had learned to trust her too. He wasn’t an emotional man. He had been trained to use his mind and to only rely on his logic and instincts when it came to making decisions. But now he was left at a crossroad. There was no one to tell him what to do anymore, he was the boss of himself. And while that had been debilitating at first, since he had been used to follow orders all his life, he had quickly learned to appreciate the power that came with getting to make the call. It was in times like these, however, that he found himself missing that part of his old life. When he didn’t need to think at stuff like this, when he was nothing more than a soldier he had orders and he had to follow them. No questions asked.
But he was not just a soldier anymore. He was a man. He was a person. Donna had helped him discover that through their time together. It had always amazed him how she was able to see through his mask and get through to him. She got to his core. She had managed to know him, to understand him. He had despised her ability at first, he hated that he was such an open book to her. He believed that to be a weakness of his. How foolish of him to think so. After the first few weeks since she left, he had come to find that he missed the closure, the intimacy. He missed her. To acknowledge that, to even admit his feelings to himself, had been a journey of itself. It had taken him a while. Almost a month to be precise. A part of him had feared that it was too late to go back to her. Maybe she had already moved on and forgot all about him. And while that possibility broke his heart, not that he would admit it, he knew that if he didn’t at least try, he would regret it.
So he did. He looked for her and when he acquired her exact position, he went to find her. She was surprised, to say the least when one day she opened the door to find him. She almost had a mind to close the door on his face, but the other part pushed her to hear him out. She just wanted to understand why, after all. So she had moved away and welcomed him in. And thank god she did, otherwise, they wouldn’t be standing here, in each others’ arms, reminiscing about the good old days. They had gone far since that day. Their relationship had grown and blossomed beautifully in something neither of them thought they would ever have.
Once, Donna had told him that one had to know when to surrender when one was facing their Waterloo. After a really long conversation, they had both come to the same conclusion: they were both facing their Waterloo, and surrendering to their feelings, allowing their heart to feel them and allowing themselves to live them freely, wasn’t so bad after all. “No,” Bane thought burying his face in Donna’s neck, “it wasn’t so bad at all”.

Mamma Mia AU [Part 5]
READ PART 4 HERE!
I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
“Marinette! There you are! I was beginning to worry—oh god, are you okay? Why is there mascara on your cheeks? Are you crying?!”
Juleka is running over to Marinette in a flash, pulling a makeup brush out of god knows where, “I’m fine, really. I just have some...allergies to the garden, that’s all.”
“Bullshit,” Alya crosses her arms over her chest, having been the one to spot Marinette sneaking into the venue in a state of disarray, “What did Adrien say to you?”
“It’s not…” Marinette bites her lips as Juleka smooths a makeup brush over her skin, carefully erasing any sign of her teardrops, “He tried to apologize and I...I kind of unloaded on him.”
Alya sighs, “Girl, I love you, but can you please keep it together for the next few minutes, at least? I was having a panic over here when you didn’t show up.”
“I’m so sorry,” Marinette steels herself and allows Juleka to continue fixing her face, closing her eyes to centre herself. She has to focus on Alya right now, not her pesky feelings. She could do that for her best friend; she owed her that much, “I promise, I’m fine now. I think I just needed to get that off my chest.”
“Good,” Alya exhales before cupping her palms to her mouth, “Marinette’s here! We’re all good to get started.”
“Oh, thank god,” Joséphine and Sophie sigh in relief as they peek around the corner, “I’ll let the officiant know we can get started.”
Rose helps Juleka collect her things and sets them to the side, straightening her gown as Juleka follows her out towards the hallway. Marinette follows suit beside Alya and fiddles with her veil several times before fluffing it upwards just so. It drapes down to her waist perfectly and Marinette deftly arranges the train of her dress before coming up to stand in front of her, “You’re all ready.”
“Thanks, girl,” Alya smiles, giving her best friend one last big hug before the ceremony begins.
As the music starts to fill the picturesque venue, Ella and Etta make their way down the aisle first alongside Nino’s younger brother Noël and his closest cousin Alexandre. As the two couples split to their respective sides, Juleka and Rose follow suit, tossing rose petals in their wake. Rose had been adamant that there be a flower girl in the wedding despite not having any children in the party and took on the role with feverish delight.
Nora walks next, side by side with one of Nino’s best friends in the music business, and then Joséphine and Sophie join the fray with Nino’s collaborator and producer respectively. Marinette holds her breath, both entranced by the scene in front of her and horrified at what’s about to come.
Marinette takes her place at the beginning of the aisle, still as a statue. Adrien walks up beside her and holds out his elbow for her to take, which she does with all the finesse of a rusted robot before they start their slow, mechanical walk down the aisle.
“You look beautiful, by the way,” he whispers, his voice barely audible as the music begins to swell.
Marinette squeaks a brief thank you, her back ramrod straight.
“And I know this isn’t the right time but…” his voice trails off, his model smile still plastered to his face as he speaks to her like a ventriloquist, “There’s only two people who know Chat Noir is back in town and I have a feeling they're both in this room."
~
“Welcome to Alya and Nino, and to all your friends who have gathered here together this afternoon...” the officiant begins as everyone sits, their eyes glued to the gorgeous couple at the centre of it all. Marinette desperately tries to focus except Adrien is staring intently at her from the other side of the room, his lips mouthing something she can’t quite ascertain.
And then it clicks.
I’m sorry for leaving you, M’Lady.
“We are all here in this glorious celebration of Nino and Alya's unconditional love for one another…”
What?! Marinette mouths back, blinking repeatedly. She must be dreaming and this is all just a very elaborate hallucination based on her imagination of what’s going to happen at Alya’s wedding tomorrow and she’ll wake up in just a minute—
I’m Chat Noir! And you’re Ladybug!
There’s no way this can be happening. There’s literally, absolutely, positively no way—
“...and today we remember that a wedding between two people is a heartfelt and meaningful ceremony that represents…
No you’re not!
Adrien’s eyes widen with worry, his expression pale, I am! And I’m sorry that I—
“Alright, enough is enough,” Alya announces, spinning around to glare at her maid of honour and her future husband's best man, “If you have something you need to say to each other, you need to spit it out right now!”
The crowd gasps, then begins to murmur as Adrien leaps from his place beside the altar to run over to Marinette, “I have spent one thousand, four hundred and twenty three days regretting the choice I made to leave Paris because it meant leaving you. I never should have—”
Marinette finally finds her voice, “Am I getting this right? You’re apologizing in the middle of Alya and Nino’s wedding to tell me, to say to me—” Marinette flings her arms into the air, “I can’t believe you’re doing this right now!”
“If you had just let me talk to you—”
“Don't get all self-righteous with me,” Marinette counters back, embarrassed beyond all belief, “Because you have no one but yourself to blame.”
“I know, which is why I’m trying to apologize now that I have the whole picture—”
“The whole picture?! If you hadn’t just dumped me and gone off to some foreign land, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation!”
Their audience gasps. The photographer drops his camera.
“Hey, hey, wait a minute! I had to leave Paris. When my father found out I had applied to universities behind his back, he personally called up every single one of them and told them that I was prohibited from ever getting a post secondary degree while I was living under his roof. My job — my only job — was to model for Gabriel, so I had no choice! The only way to secretly get an education was to move to the Haus of Gabriel in Shanghai under the guise that I wanted to use my modelling as a way to further the brand overseas!”
“So you…” Marinette flounders, her indignance and guilt warring against each other, “You left because of that?”
“I didn’t want to leave, Marinette,” he pleads with her, his flushed cheeks and watering eyes revealing just how sorry he is, “But I had to. He had taken everything from me. I wasn’t even allowed to leave the house once I graduated, except to say goodbye to all of you.”
“But…”
“And every Christmas I came back to try and find you. Everyday, I’d go out looking for you. I’d call you but you’d never answer. I left notes. I did everything because I was crazy enough to think that you would be waiting for me.”
“I—”
“And every January, I’d go back to China feeling like an idiot. I’d lost the love of my life, the woman I’d loved for years and all because I couldn’t handle being used as a pawn in my father’s business. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to come back and find you, until I did this week and—”
“Sorry, can I just...can I just butt in?”
Marinette and Adrien turn away from each other to gawk at Alya.
“If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about — and judging by your faces, you are — I just want you to know that while I’m furious with the the two of you for interrupting my wedding day, I really, really, really want the two of you to work this out because I wouldn’t be anywhere without you guys and I can’t believe you’ve been hiding this under our noses this whole time!”
The lightbulb ignites above Nino’s head after Alya briefly whispers something in his ear, “Dudes! Dudes! Oh my god!”
“You took the words right out of my mouth, babe,” Alya grins, tugging insistently on her fiancé’s shoulder as he continues to freak out, “Look, you have our blessings, but can we please get on with this? I really want to get married!”
Red faced and humiliated beyond her wildest dreams, Marinette gathers herself. Adrien scampers over to the other side of the aisle and tries desperately to keep it together except he can’t stop looking at her, his fingers itching to reach out and touch. How the hell is this happening? And how is he going to ever earn her forgiveness now that they both know who they truly are?
“I have loved you for so long, Adrien! And I loved Chat Noir too, with all my heart, even if I never got the chance to tell him.”
Her words echo over and over again in his ears like an enchantment, tugging him further and further under her spell. She loves him! Both sides of him! She’s loved him all of this time! There’s still a chance!
“Alya, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Today, I vow to love you and hold you in my arms as long as we both shall live.”
“Nino, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Today, I vow to love you and support you as long as we both shall live.”
Marinette begins to tear up again except this time, she’s not sure if it’s because of the wedding or him.
“Nino, please place this ring on Alya’s finger and repeat after me: With this ring, I take you to be my lawfully wedded wife for now, forever and always.”
Sliding her wedding band up her middle finger, Nino gives the love of his life an everlasting smile, “With this ring, I take you to be my lawfully wedded wife for now, forever and always.”
“Alya, please place this ring on Nino’s finger and repeat after me: With this ring, I take you to be my lawfully wedded husband for now, forever and always.”
Vibrating with barely contained glee, Alya returns the favour, “With this ring, I take you to be my lawfully wedded husband for now, forever and always.”
The officiant, relieved that there were no other spontaneous distractions, raises his head in exultation, “Now that you have dedicated yourselves to each other with your vows and the giving and receiving of rings in front of all who have assembled here, it is with great pleasure that I may now pronounce you husband and wife!”
The party roars, cheering and crying from their pews as Nino hoists his wife into the air and spins her around, “You may now seal your vows with a kiss!”
The rest of the ceremony passes in a blur of movement. The wedding party follows Alya and Nino as they parade back down the aisle, dancing and skipping and partying down the stairs and into the gorgeous garden courtyard where the photographer has already set up his equipment. Marinette stumbles into autopilot as she directs the wait staff to deliver hors d'oeuvres and specialty cocktails she had created specifically based on the couple. The Alya Punch was a blood orange margarita while the Nino Spritz was a twist on a gin and tonic, with a little orange zing.
She’s almost gotten herself completely distracted by the revelry when a strong pair of arms snag her by the waist and lead her into a shaded alcove on the edge of the courtyard.
“Did you mean what you said before?” Adrien asks, his heart racing, “Have you really been in love with Chat Noir and I all this time?”
Marinette hesitates, shaken and stunned, “I never stopped. And I hate myself for it.”
“What?” Adrien reels back as if he’s been slapped, “Why?”
“Because for four long years, I fought with an imaginary ghost by my side. I could never forget you, even if I wanted to. And I did. I tried everyday to get over you. I worked eighteen hour days and fought akumas and gave up on my dreams so that I could do what needed to be done.”
“I’m so sorry,” Adrien rubs his hands over his cheeks and eyes, “I never should have left you without an explanation.”
“You couldn’t tell me without exposing your identity,” Marinette concedes, sagging against the stone alcove they were hiding in, “I just...I thought you were going to be gone for a semester, not an entire university degree.”
“I wanted to do something more with myself…” he trails off, glancing down at his shoes, “And I knew that if I didn’t take the opportunity when it presented itself, I would have lost it forever. My father still has no idea I have a degree in Science and Engineering. I was even accepted for my Masters in Architectural Design this past May.”
Something poisonous shatters in her heart, “So you’ll be going back to Shanghai after this?”
Somehow, Adrien begins to appear even smaller than he already feels, “Sunday night. Just long enough to be ghosted by my father for dinner.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
The air cools uncomfortably between them, “Well, then I guess there isn’t really anything else to say.”
“What?”
Marinette finally gains the courage to look up at him, “You’re going back to Shanghai and I’m staying here to hopefully finish off what we started here together. I can never leave or travel or live my life so long as Le Papillon continues to terrorize Paris. And that’s all there is to it.”
“I…”
“The only ‘I’ in this team is me, Chat Noir,” Marinette says, straightening out the wrinkles in her dress with all of the grim determination of a woman who’s falling apart on the inside, “Please, don’t make this harder than it is.”
He snags her wrist as she goes to leave, “Wait, Marinette! There has to be something I can do—”
“There’s nothing you can do,” she levels with him, her words scraping like shards of glass on her tongue, “Goodbye Adrien. I wish you all the luck in the world on your Master’s degree and I hope you find your freedom and a great job out there. You’ve always been a good person and you deserve to have a happy life.”
She tugs her arm free and steps back into the sunlight to take her place beside the rest of the wedding party.
She doesn’t look back.
~
When All Is Said And Done
The wedding reception goes off without a hitch.
Everything is glorious. The food is divine and everyone is taking part in the generous libations being poured. The music is blasting through the speakers and everyone is dancing to the beat with their partners and their friends in a celebration of love. Marinette supervises from the sidelines and makes sure all of the gifts are accounted for, still too embarrassed to socialise much after completely humiliating herself in front of everyone during the ceremony.
As the clock strikes midnight, Nino raises his glass in the air and calls for everyone’s attention, “Here's to us and to everyone here who came out to celebrate! Let’s have one more toast!”
The party cheers and raises their glasses, downing them all in one go.
And with that, the party is over. Guests trickle out of the venue slowly, calling Ubers to get them home. Marinette leaves the wedding favours to Rose and Juleka and collects the decorations as fast as she’s able to. Her feet are aching and she kicks off her shoes, skirting around each and every table to grab centrepieces and the like. She’s nearly finished when she spots the source of her agony by the door, helping Sophie cart off the wedding gifts to the room they’d rented upstairs.
Her chest aches. It really does feel like goodbye now. After tonight, she would never see him again. She’d delete his number and stop following him on Instagram and TikTok. She would stop torturing herself with imaginary conversations as she leaps through the night searching for akumas and fighting bad guys. Weddings were a symbol of love and a symbol of new beginnings and this was about as close as she’d ever be able to get at having a fresh start.
With her head held high, she hops in her parent’s bakery van and listens to the gentle hum of the engine as she sits silently in the passenger side, her father’s fingertips on the steering wheel a good enough lullaby as anything. Her mom helps her out of her dress and she retreats for the night, feeling the heaviness of the day slip from her shoulders.
She would have time to mourn tomorrow.
~
And she does mourn for a few days. She cries into her pillow as Sunday turns to Monday. She watches Adrien’s Instagram story about getting back on the plane before unfollowing him and then cries some more, her eyes red and itchy from the overwhelming deluge of emotions four years in the making purging from her soul.
She laughs through her tears as Alya and Nino tag her in TikToks of their vacation adventures in Spain, travelling from Barcelona to Valencia to Ibiza. Watching Nino cringe as he chews on the black pudding tapas is certainly a highlight, especially when Sophie gifs it and turns it into a meme that blows up once she uses it in a Buzzfeed article.
When Marinette eventually gets to Kagami’s feed, her eyes nearly bulge out of her skull. Somehow, Luka (of all people!) had convinced her to travel to Los Angeles for a mini vacation and he was trying to teach her how to surf. She's obviously a natural at it and by the time Marinette checks all of their Instagram stories again, Kagami is weaving through the waves like a pro.
For everyone else, things are looking up.
And eventually, things would start to look up for her too.
By Tuesday, Marinette gets out of bed and stays out, turning on her sewing machine for the first time since before the wedding. Glancing at her email that had somehow been filled with commission requests over the weekend, Marinette feels a little like she’s standing at a crossroad and this time, she has no desire to run.
With her scissors in hand, she turns towards her fabric collection and feels a genuine smile pull at her lips as she gets to work on the first of three bridesmaids dresses for Joséphine. They would be powder pink and cocktail length, the perfect look for a lighthearted springtime celebration beneath the cherry blossoms.
She could go job hunting later. There’s no hurry anymore now that all is said and done.

Twelve Days of Holly Jolly Tidings - Day 7
You can read the previous entries here!
Disclaimers: I watched “Dash & Lily” the other day on Netflix. This story is LOOSELY based on that book and Netflix series.  I do not own “Dash and Lily” or Newsies or anything recognizable within the series.  There are occasional curse words throughout the series, nothing too horrible but there’s some.
Thursday, December 19
Groaning, her eyes caught the time, 3:15 in the afternoon. Her day had been anything but easy and it was nearing the end of the day. Dropping her pen, she sat back in her chair, hands behind her head as she stretched her back.
“Have time for a break?” A voice called from the doorway.
Grinning, she motioned Darcy to come in. “Hey stranger . . . long time no see. Where have you been hiding?”
“I’m undercover for a story.” He took a seat in the chair across from her desk. “I just had to stop by here to grab some things and drop this off.”
She watched as he pulled the green notebook from his pocket. “So you’re the lucky soul that gets to bring it to me today?”
“Your boyfriend can be very persuasive when he wants to be.” Darcy grinned, raising an eyebrow. “Apparently I owed him from a few months ago.”
Kat scoffed. “Don’t like it’s such a chore to come see me. Besides you’ve been the one that has been MIA for the last few weeks.”
“My apologies, Plums, but you know how undercover life is.” He at least had the decency to look guilty. “I’ve got about a week left of the story then we can hang out.”
She nodded, grinning. “Sounds like a plan. Any hints on the story?”
“Nah . . . why would I spoil it for you?” Darcy pushed himself to his feet. “Hey Kat?”
Picking up the notebook, she looked up at him. “Yeah?”
“You’ve got a good boyfriend right there. He clued me in on what he’s been doing.” Darcy’s face softened as he looked at her.
She nodded. “Yeah he is. Did he give you any indication on where he’s sending me tonight?”
“Even if he did, I wouldn’t tell you.” Darcy grinned as she stuck her tongue out at him, him returning the favor to her.  “I should be going. It was good to see you Plums. If I don’t see you, Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Darcy.” She grinned at him as he disappeared from her office.
Opening up the notebook, she found the correct entry, starting to read it.
Good afternoon Kat,
Happy 7th day of Christmas. Are you ready for today’s adventure?
First, I’ve got a little bit of a backstory for you. Since we started dating five years ago, we’ve been on some pretty epic adventures. The road trip down to Georgia to see some of my relatives, the flights over to Europe, and the days getting lost in whatever city we ended up in. Today’s adventure is going to embody the travels we’ve been on.
So many times you and I have talked about packing up our lives and leaving the city for new adventures. We’ve dreamed of living in Paris, London, Sevilla, and even Asheville, NC. But I’ve come to realize, wherever I’m with you, I’m home. It doesn’t matter what city we call home, as long as I’m with you, you’re my home, my Santa Fe.
Today, I’m sending you to 99 Schermerhorn St, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Get through a few things before continuing to read.  Have fun and go on an adventure today, Kat.
Closing the notebook, she wiped away the stray tears that had clouded her eyes as she tried to figure out what was at the address Jack had written out.  Typing the address into her maps, she headed to the nearest Subway station, ducking into the underground, quickly paying before finding herself on the platform, waiting for the A Train. Looking further down the platform, she grinned at a little girl bouncing on her toes as she held her mom’s hand. The train came in with a screeching halt, allowing the passengers to quickly exit before others boarded.
Sitting in her seat, she pulled her back onto her lap, relaxing in the seat as the train took off.  She listened to the hush tones of people talking as she went further into the city.
Eight stops later, she made her way above ground, pausing only to consult with her Maps app before heading down the street. Before long, her phone alerted her that she had arrived at her destination. Pushing through the door, her eyes swept the nondescript lobby, the only sound she heard was her heels clicking against the sleek floor.
Arriving at a des, she leaned against it with a grin. An older woman grinned at her.  “Hello. Are you here to visit the museum?”
“I guess so.” She smiled. “Can you tell me where I am? I was sent here by my boyfriend with no explanation, other than I was going on an adventure today.”
The woman chuckled, standing from her chair. “I’m going on a limb here but are you Katherine by chance?”
“I am, Katherine Plumber. Do you know Jack by chance?” Kat inquired, trying to remember if she’s ever met his woman before.
The woman smiled brightly. “Jack Kelly has been a familiar figure in this building for many years. His father was a subway train conductor, up until his retirement a few years ago. Jack would often come here to meet him after a shift before they walked home together. Jack stopped in a few days ago to give me the heads up that he was sending his girlfriend here for a really good adventure.”
Kat smiled at her, at how many connections Jack had within the city that she never knew about. “Can you tell me where this is?”
“Welcome to the New York Transit Museum.” She smiled at Kat. “You’ll have to walk down the two sets of stairs to the museum. Enjoy your time.”
Kat smiled at her before pushing off the desk, following the instructions the lady had provided. Walking carefully down the stairs, her eyes widened at the display of a train waiting on the platform.
She made her way through each exhibit, carefully looking at all of the artifacts and information displayed. They had an exhibit on display of six artists and the sketches they had created as they made their way through the different subway stations. She could see the intricate sketches, taking care to draw all the little things, much like Jack had done when he was sketching.
Finding a bench, she reached into her bag, grabbing the notebook and opening it back up to the section she had been reading.
So I’m sure you talked with Betty when you got to the museum. She and my dad are long friends, both from their days of being conductors. Oh the stories she could tell you . . .
We’ve often talked about your favorite places in the city but truth be told, this is a favorite place of mine in the city.  You’re probably wondering why, so I’m going to tell you. You can go countless places anywhere if you only step onto a train platform. This place is the perfect platform for all your hopes, dreams, and wishes, but you first have to find yourself here. You have to make the first move and this place taught me that. I used to meet my dad here after his shift and he’d tell me about the people he saw board his trains that day . . . . and he would tell me about all the hopes, wishes, and dreams that would start, just by being on the platform.
So it’s your turn . . . . write down all your hopes, wishes, and dreams; nothing is too big, or too small.
Grabbing a pen from her bag, she clicked it open before swiftly starting to write. She thought back to everything she hoped, wished, and dreamed that would happen, stuff that was locked deep in her heart and some things she had never spoken aloud to anyone.  And one thing that she had confessed to Jack, only when he was asleep, knowing that he hadn’t heard her whisper it.
Now, all you have to do is step onto the platform, and just start. You can achieve anything you want, Katherine.  As Peter Pan once famously said, "All you need is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust." I’ll give you the faith and trust, you just need the pixie dust - your hopes, wishes, and dreams.
Wiping away a stray tear, Kat looked up from the book, letting her eyes sweep the exhibit she was in. She wished she could kiss Jack at that moment with how sweet his words were. She knew he always believed in her but to see it in his scrawl and knowing he had all the faith in the world in her, she wanted to hug him and thank him.
Looking back down at the book, she saw that he had left more for her to discover.
Now, for your surprise, you’re going to have to put on your detective hat. You need to find a section about 1968. Your surprise awaits you.
Closing the book, she put it back in her bag, pushing herself off the bench. Her eyes swept the area she was in, not seeing anything about 1968. Looking to her left then her right, she headed towards the right, bringing her into another exhibit room. A retired burgundy train sat to her left as she wandered through the exhibit. She took her time, absorbing all the facts that were laid out in front of her before stopping in front of a display about 1968.
Her eyes swept the text, grinning as she realized why Jack was so invested in this section of transit history. In 1967 and 1968, the NYC Transit Authority inaugurated a series of new and revised train services collectively known as the Chrystie Street Connection. Enabled by new track connections and tunnels built in Manhattan and Brooklyn between 1957 and 1968, the project created new direct routes for Brooklyn-Manhattan train services and included a new station at Grand Street.
It was the section of the transit system they took most often when they met up. A lot of their love story took place on the Chrystie Street Connection.  Stepping back from the display, her eyes swept the area for the now familiar box. Grinning, she found it tucked away on the actual subway car.
Picking up the box, she made her way to a bench, before sitting down and pulling the wrapping paper off of it.
Opening the lid, she gasped at the charm that was nestled in the cotton, a little red train. She admired it before putting it back in the box., tucking it in her bag.
Standing, her eyes swept the exhibit, trying to find the perfect place to leave the notebook.  Making her way to the front of the subway car, tucking it on the window still. Making sure it wouldn’t fall, she headed out of the exhibit and towards the exit, only stopping at the desk to relay a message before heading out in the bitterly cold NYC wind.
Meanwhile
Stepping out of his hiding place, he shook his head at Katherine’s stealthiness. He headed over to the subway train, retrieving the book. Walking over to the bench, he flipped through it, pausing to read what she had written in the book. A smile tugged at his lips as he read all of her hopes, dreams, and wishes - everything from becoming an editor to having children to running away to Paris, France for a few weeks. The last one she had written made him pause in his reading . . . only a few days until that one came true.
Closing the book with a thud, he made his way out of the museum, only pausing to see Betty. He left with a pep in his step and a mission forming in his head.

Hey might as well.
A Little Slice Dreams: The Meta Knights Play a Fun Game of Uno
What could go wrong? Those poor knights asked themselves this question as if nothing could.
But Everything. Everything could, will, would, and did absoluteley go wrong.
They sat around a giant round table in the lounge of the Halberd, soaring at least 200 feet above sea level. The night was cold, crisp, and dark. Sword, Blade, Captain Vul, and Sailor Dee sat on one end of the table. Across from them were the four main Meta knights: Axe, Javelin, Mace, and Trident.
Sailor and Mace were determined in their craft. It was down to one of them in their anxious, sweat driving game. The winner would receive a delectable frozen trophy. The looser would have to watch in tears as the winner took the glory.
It was down to two cards for each player. But it was Sailor's turn. The fee slammed down a turn skip card And gave a sickening grin at Javelin.
"No...NO!" Mace shivered in his seat.
Sailor started cackling as they held up their last remaining card.
"I hope you have good cards looser!" Shouted Sword, while Blade babbled in an incomprehensible accent, basicly stating the same thing.
"This is too much! I think im gonna drop dead!" Axe flailed around the table.
"I think you and Mace gonna have simultaneous strokes after this." Javelin said in their robotic tone.
Yeah your screwed, signed Trident.
"I'll be right back I'm gonna go get the reward for Sailor." Vul stated in an almost certain tone.
Sailor ceased their cackling and drew a deadly glare at Mace. As if their eyes shot daggers through Mace's soul.
"Uno..."
Sailor slammed a draw four on the table, prompting Mace to dramaticly scream "no" and cry, slamming his fists on the table.
"I-I was so c-c-close...WAAHHHH!"
"You challenged Sailor in uno. You knew what grave you were digging yourself into," Axe said, "and speaking of digging into things!"
Vul brought out Sailor's reward. An ice cream parfait stacked a mile high, dripping with fudge and marshmallow coating. The frozen Vanilla custard sat delicately above the hot brownies under it, and under that, the crunchy crumbs of canoli crust. Chocolate decoration perched itself on top of the display like a fine peice of jewelry. The reward was perfect in every way. Fitting for a satisfyingly sweet victory in an uno game.
Mace continued to cry as Vul handed Sailor the ice cream. As the glass was handed to them, Sailor's eyes lit up.
"Thank ye Captain!" They elongated every vowel in appreciation for their edible trophy.
"I'd say you earned it, 'Sir Uno champion Sailor Waddle Dee.'" Vul spoke to Sailor but looked at Mace as he continued to weap at his loss.
Blade and Sword cheared on Sailor as they scarfed down the whole desert like Kirby inhales a whole feast, while Tident, and Axe sighed in second hand defeat and consulted Mace as he sobbed. Javelin cheared on Sailor as well.
"WOOO! GO SAILOR!"
"H-H-Hey! Y-Your supposed to be rooting for m-m-me. Sniff."
"You didn't win."
As Sailor finished the dish. They realized they left the chocolate decorations for last. They thought that this would be such a great time to rub it in Mace's face that he lost with the chocolate.
"Hey Mace."
"H-huh?"
"Look."
Mace thought he knew what was going on. "YOU WERE THE NICE ONE DON'T TOURTURE ME LIKE THIS!"
"Here." Sailor gave the knight a chocolate decoration. "For you, because ye played good."
Mace's eyes lit up. "R-really?" He stifled a sniff. "For me?"
"Yeah. For you."
"Oh your too kind. I..."
As Mace took the chocolate, a hint of fear went into his eyes. The symbol on it sent a chill down his spine.
"Vul..."
"Yes Mace?"
"Which freezer did you get this ice cream out of."
"Why the one in the lounge of course"
"The mini blue freezer or the big silver freezer?"
"The mini blue one with all of bosses ice creEAAM OH SWEET NECRODEUS WHAT HAVE I DONE?"
Blade turned sharp to Vul and panicked, falling backwards into an incomprehensible blabber.
Sword shook. "THATS BOSS'S ICE CREAM FRIDGE!"
"You stole Meta Knight's ice cream?" Cried Javelin.
Trident signed an oh no in shaking paws.
"We're all gonna be dead by dawn in our stone graves! And the writings gonna say we died cold and chocolatey!" Axe shouted.
"He's gonna kill me the most I ate the damn thing!" Sailor squealed and almost started to cry. They sweated up a storm in their anxiety.
Vul attempted to be reassuring. "He will not kill us for one mess up." The captain wasn't to sure of this. "I'm sure everything is going to be-"
A door slammed open to reveal an enraged pair of golden-red eyes and a maskless, meta knight wearing them, and pink bunny slippers and a fluffy robe.
"Who..."
"Oh no."
"WHO!"
The shout sent echoes through the room. Cracks formed on the floors, walls and cealing. Some of them went tumbling into the hallway, others flew out of their seats. The glass that contained the ice cream hit the floor and shattered into a million pieces like a golden glass mirror.
Sword, like everyone else, was horrified of consequence. He jumped up on the table, cupped his hands over his mouth and yelled "SCATTER!" As though it were some kind of party with alcohol and the police just got there.
Everyone ran in different directions. Sword and Blade searched for hiding places, Mace and Javelin jumped to the ceiling. Trident and Axe tried to break a window so that they could fall into the orange watters below. Vul and Sailor darted into the hallways, not looking back to the flapping sounds that echoed through the battleship.
Sailor took a sharp left and shakingly pulled out a phone from their hat. They searched through their contacts to find people that could save them from whatever punishment they would face.
Kirby was unavailable, probably sleeping. Bandee was also probably sleeping. Or training at three am like an insane person for that smash bros invitation. Dedede was the only person that picked up. In the background you could hear some trash comedy in the most of a clear crunching of popcorn.
"Yo."
Sailor spoke in a hushed yet anxious tone. "Sir, ye gotta get over here and help I think we're gonna die!"
"Did you steal his ice cream?" A crunch was heard clearly.
"It was an accident we were just-"
Vul's scream came blasting through the halls.
Sailor had a mild panic attack. "OH SHIT! CAPTAIN!"
The phone dropped to the floor and rattled. Dedede, on his end, looked at the phone with utter confusion and hung up.
Vul was backed into a corner by the furious borb, spoon in one paw.
"Do you know how long it took me to make that? THREE DAYS!"
Vul took hold of a nearby pipe and found to it for dear life. Eyes wide fearing death.
"I was saving that for today specificly! I was going to watch Mama Mia!
"Oh God sir I'm sorry!"
"Sorry doesn't give me back my ice cream Vul!"
"WAIT!"
Sailor came running out of the halls and in front of Vul to protect him.
"It was an accident sir. We were just playin a game and he grabbed the wrong ice cream. Don't hurt em!"
"Why... would I hurt anyone...I'm just angry."
"You look like you're gonna f%#king kill someone!"
Vul stepped out of his "gripping onto the pole for dear life" position just to scold Sailor for swearing. "Hey! What did we talk about?"
"Oops. Sorry." They turned back to Meta Knight.
"I... apologise if I seem a little harsh. It's wrong to terrify someone in the middle of the night over something so minuscule." Meta knight held his paw out for Vul to shake."Is all forgiven?"
Vul was more than relieved. "Absoluteley sir!"
Meta knight looked at the bird andd produced a laugh, but in the middle of it they stated most seriously that "You owe me another bowl." This didn't ease the captain's fear.
"We still have the ice cream we didn't eat in oyur fridge," Sailor stated, "you can have that."
Meta Knight turned. "What flavor is it?"
"Vanilla with chocolate and marshmallow swirl."
"I'll take it...but..."
Sailor was confused. "But what?"
"Due to my outburst I would find it fair that I would have to earn the desert, rather than just taking it. Besides, I'm DVRing the movie so I can watch it later."
"Wait wait wait. Earn it how?" The captain let go of Meta's hand and looked down at the small, Kirby esque orb.
"I'm thinking...Uno?"
Sailor's eyes sparkled. "Now that's a chalanged! You're on!"

Tiny Dancer
Tumblr media
John X Reader
Caution: Heated moments, Strong language, Sexual references.
I’m actually quite proud of how this one turned out.
Enjoy, my cuties.
~~~
The room was on fire.
Not literally, of course, but the hundred bodies cramped up in a tiny club, definitely made it feel that way.
I love to dace, what can I say?
So here I was, in the heat of the moment, shoving away my introvert, and dancing like there was no tomorrow.
Maybe there wouldn’t be.
Who the fuck cares?
A few hours earlier, I was chatting with my best friend.
“I’ve got a man. You need a man! Babe, you could get any guy that you want, all you gotta do is look at him.”
Rolling my eyes, I sighed. “Lisa, I don’t need anybody. Just chill out. I’m fine just the way I am.” I smirked “Untouchable.”
“Dude, you can’t stay a virgin forever.”
“Yes, I can watch me!”
“Wanna bet?”
“Yes, actually.”
She grinned “I bet you 100 dollars to go to Mark’s tonight and get roaring drunk. If you comeback a virgin, I’ll eat my shoe.”
“And pay me 100 bucks.”
“Yes, that too.”
I shook her hand.
“Deal.”
I went to Mark’s.
I even went a little further and wore the most scandalous thing in my wardrobe. Spaghetti strapped, thigh length, skimpy black dress, if you’d even call it that, clung to my hourglass body like a long lost friend. Ruby studs and a matching necklace only added to my look. Of course, as any girl looking for a good time, I wore 3 inch heels that hurt like a bitch. I put so much makeup on my face that my guise didn’t even look remotely familiar.
“What to drink?” asked the bartender, wiping champagne flutes.
“Surprise me.” I grinned.
He smiled back “As you wish.” He got working, mixing his voodoo drink.
I glanced around the place. It was fairly quiet, for a club at least.
Some old men smoking pipes in the back.
A girl and her girlfriends sipping margaritas at the bar.
“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Mia, Happy birthday to you!”
The girls clapped and the girl, who I assumed was Mia, took a sip of the drink. Immediately after, she coughed hysterically.
Amused, I presumed she had just gotten to legal drinking age and so she was living it up with her girlfriends.
Not a bad way to live, I thought, watching them a while.
The bartender came back with the surprise drink.
“Mad Hatter.” he said.
I stared at it. I was a pretty turquoise colour, and the edges were rimmed with pink.
I took a sip.
The flavour hit my tongue instantly. Definitely lime, along with something that tasted like melted jolly ranchers, vodka and something I couldn’t quite place.
Just as I took another sip, a large group came in. All of them were young men. Very handsome young men. I decided to pay them no mind.
At least for the moment.
As I continued taking sips, I felt one of the boys’ eyes on me. I shoved away the flirty impulse of turning, and winking at him and instead stared out at the town, which was getting darker by the minute.
Minutes ticked by, and more people came in.
The sound of chatter was starting to irritate me.
I stood up, and walked straight to the jukebox.
Once the music hit my ears, a sudden relief washed over me. I finished off the my drink and requested another one, a bit stronger this time. The bartender’s eyes raised, but he said nothing as he went to work on another one.
Once I got it, I threw back half of it. I was started to feel extremely relaxed and a bit woozy.
Normally, I’m a fairly mellow girl and don’t really care to be the center of attention.
Oh, but tonight was different. I was the star of the show and every boy in the room wanted me.
But no fucking way would any of them get me.
I swayed and danced to the music.
I was the only one at first, but I didn’t give a fuck. Soon enough, birthday girl and her groupies joined me. Everyone started catching on, pushed back their chairs, and got lost in the music.
I ordered one “Mad Hatter” after another, letting the voodoo juices work their way into my system.
I was completely and utterly roaring drunk.
My arms and hips moved perfectly in sync to the rhythm. One boy after another tried making moves on me, wrapping their arms around my waist and stealing kisses. I’d let them for a while, but then I’d push them away, remaining the Untouchable.
But then, there was the boy.
That one damned boy.
Who ruined everything.
I parted the crowd like the red sea as I went to request another drink.
“You’re quite the dancer.”
I turned to the source of the words.
I smirked “I know. I don’t think I’ve had a chance with you yet. Wanna try?”
He smirked.
“No thank you. I try to stay away from man eaters.”
I scowled at the remark “Who says smartass? I’m just trying to have a good time.”
His eyes darkened.
“I’ll show you a good time.”
I raised an eyebrow as I sipped another most likely drug-filled drink.
“Wanna bet? I doubt you’d last 5 seconds with me, pretty boy.”
“The name’s John.”
“Whatever. Don’t really care. So, what d’you say? Deal, or are you too chicken?”
He rose his hand up.
“Deal.”
I rose mine to shake, but he grabbed it and kissed it.
Like, really kissed it.
My heart went into my throat.
“You’re good.” I admitted.
He raised his eyes to me. “Oh, you have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
There was a gleam in his eyes which sent chills down my spine.
He pulled me off to the side and we started dancing. It was fairly normal, hands on my waist, mine around his neck.
Soon however, he pulled me closer and closer to him. He leaned toward me and for a moment, I thought he was going to kiss me. But instead he whispered in my ear.
“Tonight baby, you’re mine. And I’m gonna fuck you until you can’t walk.”
My body radiated with heat, my face flushed red. Nobody had said something so forward and confident to me, ever.
“What makes you think I want you to fuck me?”
He grinned wolfishly at me “This.”
This time he leaned in for the kiss.
And oh boy, what a kiss it was.
Not any little peck in high school could have prepared me for this. Who knew someones tongue could be so magical?
He mapped out my entire mouth before he let me breathe again.
He was a hot mess, hair tousled, lips big and pink, and his eyes, full of desire.
His hands lightly went up and down my figure.
“You’re sexy as fuck.”
I blushed slightly. Biting my lip, I looked at the ground. My Shy was rearing it’s head back, coming to haunt me, dammit. What happened to Miss Confident?”
He tilted my head up to face him.
He licked his lips hungrily staring into my eyes and looking deep into my soul.
“Let’s get outta here.”
He grabbed my hand, and lead us out of Mark’s.
Some of the other boys I had seen him with earlier were smoking outside.
They turned and grinned at him.
“Ey, John! What ya up to?”
“None of your bloody business, Paul.”
They all looked at me and some of them oohed.
“Have fun Johnny!”
“Oh, fuck off Ringo.” John snapped.
He opened the car door for me and we were off.
I couldn’t believe this was happening.
Today, I was supposed to prove that I didn’t need anybody by getting drunk and breaking all the boys’ hearts.
Now, I was in a car, bound to lose the very thing I promised I’d never do, in a manner of minutes.
Damn you, John,
We entered a fairly decent looking flat.
“Let me take your coat.”
I shrugged off my mink and walked further into the place.
“Well, welcome to my humble abode.”
It was then that I realized how drunk I was.
The room was spinning.
 “I think... I should sit down.” I slumped onto the couch.
“Right. Where were we? Ah, yes.”
He turned on me.
He crawled on top of me. I felt the warmth of his breath on my skin, and the heat from the leather sofa underneath me.
He traced my lips.
“I believe I never caught your name. Care to oblige me with it?”
“(y/n).”
He smiled. “Unique. Very pretty. Like you.”
He leaned in once more.
“Now as much as I like this dress, I think it would look much better on the floor.”
I unbuttoned a few buttons on his shirt.
“Whatever you say, handsome.”
He caught my lips once again for a searing kiss.
“I’m going to fuck you now.” he growled.
I smiled goofily, my eyes a bit glazed.
“Sounds good to me.”
~~~
“You owe me 100 dollars, I believe.” Lisa chirped brightly.
I groaned “Shut up, would ya? My head’s killing me.”
She smirked “I won’t stop till you say you lost.”
“Fine, you won. Now shut the fuck up and leave me alone.”
She grinned like a cat who got the cream. Passing me a coffee cup she said, “He seemed very handsome. What was his name?”
“John.” I winced.
“(y/n), you’re human. We all need to give in to our desires sometimes. I’m glad you finally came to your senses.”
“Yeah, yeah...sure, whatever.” I grumbled.
Deep down, I was glad she was right.
I should do it again sometime.

chapter 17 | read on ao3
1914
for i'm so scared of losing you
and i don't know what i can do about it, about it
“I’m so sorry, Roy.”
 She felt him nod behind her back in their bed, his chin shifting the hair on the back of her head. Riza’s hands idly fiddled with the duvet covering them, too anxious about the upcoming conversation to do much else. After offering her condolences she lifted one hand to Roy’s that was by her head. He’d snaked his arm underneath her neck before they’d gotten comfortable, and it was Riza’s favourite thing to do. Gripping his hand so close to her face was an immense comfort that she always enjoyed.
“Thank you,” he whispered. “He was murdered because of what he knew, I think.”
“Knew about what?” Riza asked fearfully.
Roy was silent for a long moment. “I think he found out something big about the military. Something so big that he could tear them down with the news.” She heard him swallow and Riza gripped his hand tighter, squeezing it. Roy’s hand curled tightly over hers, gripping onto her like she was a life raft. “I don’t know what it was, but it must have been worth it for someone to kill him over it.”
Riza flinched at how blasé he was talking about all of this. However, she realised he was probably used to death after going off to war. The memory of his thousand-yard stare flashed in Riza’s mind and she remembered his nightmares, filled with death and destruction, and she shivered. It prompted her to hold onto him tighter.
“I’m going to find out what it was,” Roy stated, his tone determined.
White hot fear flashed through her body. If he got killed over this secret too…
“Please don’t,” she whispered before she could even think. Then, Riza panicked. This is what had prompted their last argument. “I mean, please, just…” Riza floundered, trying to think of the right words but she had nothing. She didn’t want him to die. He had a wife and child waiting for him at home. He couldn’t be reckless and go off, getting himself killed like that.
A horrible thought occurred to Riza. Maes had a wife and daughter too, but he still went ahead with it, and people always said Maes was the more level-headed one out of him and Roy. She almost panicked when she thought of Roy leaving for work one day then coming home in a body bag.
It had always been a reality for her, but now that she’d lost a friend in the same way she feared she would her husband, that reality came crashing down on her. It buried her under its weight, leaving her struggling to breathe.
Roy was silent and Riza loosened the grip on his hand as she curled into a tight ball. She didn’t think he’d even noticed she was no longer holding his hand.
 She didn’t want an argument like last time.
“I don’t want you to die,” she stated quietly. Taking a deep breath, she exhaled shakily. “The only reason I asked you not to pursue it the other night was because I don’t want to lose you.” Her body curled inwards again, her voice dropping to a whisper as she finally admitted her reasonings to him. “It’s selfish of me to ask this of you because I know how much Maes meant to you.”
In her mind, it was more than she meant to him. Maes got Roy through Ishval. Maes helped him rise through the ranks quickly. All Riza had done was rouse him from his nightmares and comforted him. She’d sacrificed so many hours of sleep to try and soothe him, but it always felt like it took hours to calm him down. She’d seen Maes place a hand on Roy’s shoulder when he was about to lose it. All Roy needed to do was close his eyes, count to ten, then he was off again, moving forwards and away from the memory of his past. Riza never had that touch. It was never that easy at night. She never once resented Maes for that fact. She was just glad someone could help Roy, but she’d never felt more useless in that moment.
“It’s not selfish,” Roy murmured. His hand was shifted out from underneath her neck. Riza bit her lip, mourning the loss of it, even though she’d initiated the break in contact. A hand was placed on her shoulder. The way his thumb was making circles in place was so gentle. “Get some rest,” he stated, ending the conversation. “You’re still recovering.”
Go to sleep, Riza. This is nothing for you to worry about. You wouldn’t be able to help anyway.
Her mind was bitter tonight. It still felt like she burdened him every day, but in order to get her feelings sorted out, she knew she needed to work through it herself. They’d get through Maes’ funeral, hopefully without another argument, then she’d take it from there.
 “Okay,” Riza swallowed. She didn’t turn to kiss him goodnight like she always did. She shifted so her face was half buried in her pillow, wanting to hide herself from the world for the night.
She felt ashamed.
First, she’d collapsed after hyperventilating at the thought of Roy leaving her. Pathetic. Secondly, she’d traumatised her daughter by making her find her unconscious body in their bathroom, out cold and unable to wake up. You’re a terrible mother to put your daughter through that. And lastly, Roy was filled with such a rage towards Maes’ killer. She was supposed to calm him down and keep him on track of his goals. This wasn’t it, because she knew he’d be so furious he’d use his alchemy to exact his revenge. He couldn’t get revenge on someone like that. That wasn’t the Roy Mustang she knew and loved. If she was unable to talk him out of this, then she really was useless.
He doesn’t need someone like you.
Expertly, she exited the bed without jostling it too much. Thankfully, Roy was asleep, something Riza hadn’t even noticed until she was out of bed. It normally took hours for Roy to fall asleep. Just how long had she been going over things inside of her own mind? She made her way to their bathroom, locking the door softly behind her.
Riza caught her reflection in the mirror. She looked awful. The bandage was off her head and there was an ugly purple bruise in its place, accompanied by a sizeable lump. Riza froze when her eyes settled on the floor through the mirror’s reflection. She’d been too ashamed to look at the image staring back at her which was a reminder of her failings, but glancing down… This is where she’d passed out. This is where Mia had found her… Unconscious.
Tears swelled in her eyes. They fell silently and her breathing made no more sound than a whisper. Gripping the porcelain tightly once again, Riza shut her eyes and squeezed them tightly shut. Her fingers were beginning to burn because of the pressure.
Useless.
How could she have put Mia through something like that? After getting home from the hospital, Mia hadn’t been up nor down with either of them. She appeared as if everything was perfectly normal and Riza was just waiting for her to crack. She watched her daughter carefully and closely before she went to bed but there was no change in behaviour. Not that they’d had much time, it was dark by the time they got home, and they were all exhausted. The room had been spinning slightly for Riza, so she’d retired to bed early, like Mia. It wasn’t a ploy to escape from Roy for a while… Not at all…
How bad had things gotten, that she was actively trying to avoid her husband?
They needed to be better for Mia’s sake.
They needed to.
Pulling herself up to her full height, Riza stared at herself in the mirror. A blank stare looked back at her, but slowly, resolve formed in her eyes. Determination made its way in there as well.
Riza needed to be better to herself.
She was not useless. She tried her best and always had. She wanted her family to be happy and healthy. She would do everything in her power to ensure that happened. Riza Mustang was more than capable.
Her shoulders rolled back as she looked at herself in her reflection once more.
It would be hard. She was used to avoiding fights with her father when he lashed out and she’d fallen into that trap once again. But Roy was not her father and she was no longer a child. She was an adult. She was Mia’s mother and Roy’s wife. He’d apologised for his actions and while it may take her a while to accept it, she had to get through this. She deserved to get through it for her. Plus, she had the little one to think of. Riza placed a hand over her tiny bump and let out a deep breath. There were people counting on her. She had to deal with this and move forward.
Keep moving forward.
She owed it to those who’d lost their lives thanks to flame alchemy – a power she let loose in the world.
Get through Maes’ funeral in one piece, then she’d deal with her family worries. The military was quick and efficient when it came to a funeral, so Maes would be buried within days. She’d be able to hold it together until then.
*          *          *
Maes’ funeral was a long and hard day. Roy was at the front with the rest of the soldiers alongside Gracia and Elicia. Riza was a few rows back with Mia in her arms. Her head was on Riza’s shoulder, her thumb in her mouth as Riza swayed her gently. Mia’s tears were a constant but silent stream down her cheeks, and Riza let her ride it out. Riza could say nothing, offer nothing, because there was nothing that would bring her Uncle Maes back.
“Mummy?” Riza heard Elicia ask from the front. She sounded so confused. “Why are they putting all that dirt on Daddy?”
Riza froze, her stomach twisting painfully.
“Elicia,” she heard Gracia whisper, then sob.
“No, stop it!” she cried out as Gracia lifted her daughter into her arms. “Stop putting dirt on Daddy! He has to go to work! Leave him alone!”
Riza took a deep breath as her tears began to fall silently too. She hated this for them. That little girl had lost her Daddy. That was so unfair. He was such a kind, good, and honest man. He hadn’t deserved this fate.
He’d died helping Roy towards this goal to take down the military. Riza had vomited twice at the thought of Roy suffering the same fate. Someone in a very high position of power was trying to stop Roy, and that petrified her. She couldn’t even eat. She had no appetite. When Roy prompted her about it, that morning, Riza reassured him she was fine and that she couldn’t eat in the mornings because of the pregnancy. It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t exactly the whole truth either. Every time she brought it up, he faltered and was rendered mute, staring at her.
Like he’d completely forgotten about it.
Or, he no longer wanted it. That second voice in her head was vicious and had become more prominent in recent days.
Riza left the kitchen table without another word, heading off to get Mia ready for the funeral. She needed action and movement to silent that voice.
 Roy had been so focussed on helping Gracia through the funeral arrangements, and rightly so, that they’d barely seen each other. But a small voice inside her head whispered as she left the room that she didn’t want to see the beginning of her end.
“Mummy?” Mia asked quietly.
Small hands were pressed against Riza’s cheeks and she turned, finding Mia staring at her. Her daughter smiled, a small but sad smile, and then bunched her black cardigan up in her fists. Riza was rendered mute as Mia wiped at the moisture on her cheeks, her brow furrowing in her concentration as she tried to wipe away her mother’s tears. Then, without another word, Mia wrapped her arms around Riza’s neck. Her mother was left there, mute with surprise, and too shocked at her actions to move. Then, the tears built once more.
“I love you Mummy,” Mia whispered. Riza gripped her body tighter. She wouldn’t break. Not now. Not in front of her daughter. “I always will, okay?”
“I know, Mia Bear,” she whispered. “I love you too. So does your Daddy.” Riza’s voice cracked.
The soldiers filed out in formation, Roy included, but Gracia stayed in place, holding Elicia tight as the little girl cried loudly.
“Do you want to go and see Daddy, Mia?” Riza asked her, shifting Mia in her aching arms. Gracia needed to be comforted and Riza wanted to offer that to her.
To Riza’s surprise, Mia latched onto her neck tightly. “No.” Riza blinked at her. “I want to stay with you.”
“I think Daddy needs a hug –”
“So do you,” Mia replied quietly. “You’re sad too.”
“I’ll be fine, Mia –”
Her five-year-old shook her head. “I need you Mummy,” she admitted very quietly. “I want a cuddle.”
She paused for a second, just watching her daughter. “All right then,” Riza agreed. “You can stay here for now. Do you mind if we go and see Aunt Gracia and Elicia?” Mia shook her head. “All right, let’s go.”
Riza approached and swallowed thickly, listening to little Elicia sobbing. She placed Mia on the ground, her arms too tired to hold her, but Mia latched onto her hand and refused to let go. Riza was grateful for it.
Placing a hand on her old friend’s shoulder, Riza said nothing as Gracia hugged her daughter tightly.
“Auntie Riza?” Elicia asked, momentarily distracted. Her eyes were red and blotchy as she stared at Riza, wondering why she was suddenly there.
“Hey, Sweetie,” Riza greeted, offering her a smile.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, confused.
Gracia removed her face from Elicia’s shoulder. She opened her mouth to scold her daughter but Riza squeezed Gracia’s shoulder and gave her a small smile.
“It’s okay,” she reassured her grieving friend. “I’m here to say goodbye to your Daddy.”
“I don’t want him to go,” she mumbled, gearing up to cry again.
“I know, Sweetie. I know you don’t. None of us do,” Riza reassured her. “Come on, why don’t we go and see if we can clean up that snotty nose of yours?” she asked, “booping” Elicia on the nose. The young girl paused for a second then giggled. Riza smiled at her when she nodded. “Let’s give Mummy some time to say goodbye to Daddy –”
“But… I want to as well!” Elicia cried, looking terrified that she might not be able to. Her grip became iron tight on the front of her mother’s cardigan.
“You will, don’t worry,” Riza explained. “I’ll bring you right back if you want. I promise. But let’s clean up that nose first, instead of wiping it on Mummy’s nice dress, shall we?”
Elicia looked at her mother, but Gracia wasn’t looking at her daughter. Her eyes were grateful towards Riza.
Opening up, Riza took the child into her already exhausted arms.
“Thank you,” Gracia sniffed, murmuring her thanks in Riza’s ear.
When Riza pulled away, Roy appeared as if from nowhere by Gracia’s side. Out of habit, as soon as she lay her eyes on him, she cast them away. It was something she’d done a hundred times before with her father, and Riza resented herself for it. She’d promised herself she’d be better. Roy is not your father. Stop avoiding him. It was a hard habit to break. She needed to sort her shit out. Glancing back at her husband she noted the pained look on his face…
Elicia first. She needed Riza right now, and so did Gracia. Removing her from her mother for the moment would give Gracia time to grieve properly and let everything out without the fear of upsetting Elicia further.
“But… If I go Mummy will be all alone.”
“Uncle Roy will look after her, don’t worry,” Riza smiled, “booping” her snotty nose again. “Ew,” Riza joked. “Bogeys!” she cried in horror, wiping her “dirty” hand on her dress, making Mia and Elicia laugh beside her. “Let’s get you cleaned up, okay?”
“But…” Elicia bit her lip. “What if I get bogeys on your dress?” she asked.
“Oh, that’s okay,” Riza reassured her. “It’s already got Mia’s bogeys all over it.”
Elicia giggled and looked down at Mia. “You wiped bogeys on Auntie Riza’s dress?”
“I did,” Mia giggled at her admittance.
Riza sighed, playing along with the two girls. “See, now it doesn’t matter. I’ll be the Bogeyman before I know it, thanks to you two!”
With the two girls giggling, Riza left her husband and her old friend by Maes’ grave. Mia walked right by Riza’s side, trying to find new ways to make her upset friend laugh and cheer her up.
*          *          *
“You know,” Roy overheard Riza begin as she walked away with Elicia and Mia. “I grew up without a Daddy too.” Roy had opened his mouth to comfort his friend, but he paused after overhearing his wife.
“Really?” Elicia asked in wonder.
“Yep, really.”
“Granddad isn’t alive anymore,” Mia chipped in.
“Just like my Daddy?” Roy blanched and caught Gracia twitch out the corner of his eye.
“Yes, just like your Daddy,” Riza replied softly.
Roy watched her back, noticing how she didn’t even skip a beat with Elicia. He would have probably tripped with how casually she’d asked that question, but Riza breezed ahead, telling the child the truth, no matter how hard that might be.
“Riza does understand, so don’t think she doesn’t,” Chris’ words echoed inside his head. “She’s lost almost every family member she’s ever had, and it happened when she was only a child. Then, she lost you for a while after finding out she was pregnant. Don’t think for a minute she doesn’t understand loss or what you’re going through. She’s the most qualified out of all of us when dealing with loss.”
She was so much stronger than he was with this, but it didn’t mean she wasn’t hurting. And Roy had thrown that in her face.
“But,” Mia chimed in. “It doesn’t mean they’re gone forever.”
Roy paused again, his head turning to watch his wife and child walk down the hill towards the cemetery gates. His car was parked at the front, but… Come to think of it, he had no idea how Riza had even gotten here today. Roy had left early as he was part of the military procession. He’d been so focussed on Maes’ funeral he hadn’t even considered how his wife was going to get to the cemetery.
He felt awful. So awful. “We need to be better,” Riza had said. He needed to be. He was neglecting them both. He knew this already, but it suddenly hit him like a tonne of bricks.
“Mummy says that as long as I remember someone who’s gone, they’re never really gone from my life.”
“I like that,” Elicia whispered. “I like that a lot.”
It was the last part of the conversation that Roy heard because they were fading out, moving out of earshot.
When… When had Riza went through all of this with Mia? Come to think of it, he’d never told Mia. Never even thought about bringing it up. If he had remembered, he would have held back and not said anything before checking with Riza first. It was a dark time for her, so it wasn’t his story to tell. It hadn’t even occurred to Roy.
Shit.
Just get through today then make up for your mistakes.
“Hello, Roy,” Gracia greeted quietly. She attempted a smile, but it crumpled as his old friend pressed her hands against her face.
“Come here,” he urged, wrapping his arms around Gracia’s shoulders. The two held each other tightly, mourning the loss of the person they loved. He didn’t know how long it had been, but it was what he needed. Comforting Gracia brought him closer to the man he’d thought of as a brother, and of course, they’d both promised each other that if anything were to happen to them, they’d look after the other’s families without question. It was time for Roy to step up, but also not forget about his own family because he’d been doing that a lot recently in his grief. Riza was the one who’d been doing all the heavy lifting recently, and he was long overdue to carry his own weight in this family.
Laughter floated up to them both and at the same time they turned their heads towards it, seeing Elicia and Mia playing by a tree at the entrance to the cemetery. Riza was walking towards them up the hill, hands in her jacket pockets, and her eyes cast down. Roy’s chest tightened at the sight of her. He’d noticed she was avoiding his gaze whenever they spoke. She was putting those walls up again and he needed to fix it.
“She will blame herself for this – the way you acted and what happened as a result of it. I know Riza, and she will. Don’t let her. It will destroy her, and you both, in the long run. Make good on that promise and look out for her, instead of blaming her for not understanding what you’re going through.”
“I’m going to take the girl’s back to our house,” she stated, again, speaking directly to Gracia. “Mia has some new dolls that Elicia is very excited to see, if you wouldn’t mind? I think it might cheer her up a little.”
Gracia shook her head. “Not at all,” she whispered.
“Take all the time you need,” Riza offered with a kind smile.
“Riza –” Roy called to her as she turned away without another word.
“Mummy! Help!” Mia called from down the hill. Riza had stopped at his call, but continued hurriedly, as Mia ran up towards her. “Elicia is trying to catch me!” she added, a giggle leaving his daughter as Elicia’s little legs struggled to run up the hill.
Catching Mia in her arms, Riza hoisted her daughter into them, walking towards the cemetery gates with Elicia in tow. Once there, she put Mia down and walked with them both, arms swinging between them.
“What happened, Roy?” Gracia asked, looking up at him.
“What?” he asked, confused.
“Between you and Riza?”
“Nothing, we –”
Gracia shook her head. “I noticed the cut on her forehead. You two are distant with each other and she looks upset. What happened?”
“Nothing,” he dismissed. “Anyway, this isn’t why we’re here –”
“No, but Maes wouldn’t want this for you.”
“Want what?” he asked, letting his irritation show in his voice.
“For you two to suffer because of his death.” Gracia looked away from him, turning her attention to the mound of freshly packed dirt. “I’ve seen how you’ve reacted to his death. Roy, you need to calm down. Don’t do anything drastic.”
“I’m not going to,” he replied with more force than he should have. Why did everyone think that?
Because they know you and have spoken to you in the last week. They’re not blind, and deep down, you know you will too, to get revenge.
Gracia looked up at him sadly. “Maes wouldn’t want the same fate for you,” she replied. Taking a deep breath, Gracia let it all out in one go. “Don’t go out and get revenge,” she added firmly. “Focus on your family.”
“Gracia… I can’t just let this go,” he whispered, finally letting his emotions loose.
“I’m not asking you to, and she won’t either,” Gracia replied, jerking her head towards the gates. “She would never, but this is affecting you both. You need to talk it through with Riza.”
He’d tried…
In a flash in his mind, he remembered their conversation the night they’d returned from the hospital. He remembered the panic in Riza’s voice when she asked him not to follow through with it. She’d struggled to find the words quickly, obviously worried he’d explode at her again like he’d done before. He’d been irritated again, but didn’t want to argue with her, so blocked it out for a moment, counting to ten before letting himself concentrate on the conversation once more. When he’d calmed himself down, he noticed she’d turned her back to him, curled in on herself.
He’d caused that. He’d done that to her.
“It’s selfish of me to ask this of you because I know how much Maes meant to you.” That didn’t sit well with him, but he’d been tired at the time and noticed how tired Riza was too. He’d dismissed their conversation, telling her to get some rest instead of pushing through with it further. He just didn’t want another argument.
But it hadn’t been selfish. It was a woman worrying about her husband, and rightly so. He’d been on the warpath and had set out in a fit of rage to find out more about what had happened to Maes. He could have ended up dead yesterday if he’d managed to progress in the case of his murder.
Riza was simply looking out for him, just like she’d promised she would. Her request was more than fair.
They were a mess. He was a mess.
 “We’ve already buried someone, Roy,” she whispered, breaking into Roy’s thoughts. her voice cracking. “Don’t make us do it again.”

1. Alone amongst brothers.
"Cal! Hey mate where are you?" Snowballs clicked his fingers under his nose, startling him.
Bad idea. Never startle an ex cop ex Marine who hadn't slept for years.
Chris -his real name was Chris- came out of his reverie and offered a poor smile to his brothers. Obviously missing his goal to reassure his squad.
Who was he kidding?
He hadn't been here for years. For 3 years. 3 fucking years.
He hadn't been the same since he came out of prison. Since his brother, his real brother fled to Canada, to never return.
Since Oyster, his little brother killed that asshole in a bar.
Thinking about it, all this shit had started after their mother died.
Big, huge mess she had left behind.
He reluctantly came back to the world, that world without his mom nor his brother, that world where he's a useless piece of shit, forbidden to serve his country in any way.
Reverie couldn't have been more inappropriate. Living nightmare would have fit better.
"Next round on me." Jaeger announced with too much enthusiasm.
"Same?" He quirked an eyebrow at Cal, who just nodded, not bothering to say a word.
He didn't need another beer. Alcohol free. Taste free too. He'd been nursing the same bottle since he settled his ass in the bar, mind absently scratching the corner of the label with his nail.
He had been sentenced to 6 years and spent 3 at Pittsburgh Correctional Institution. He got a release, good behaviour. He'd been lucky, somehow, half of the prisoners were there because of him. Death had waited for him at every corner, but freedom hadn't tasted better.
A lot had happened in 3 years. Life had gone on whilst his had stopped behind the bars.
Snowball found his soulmate Carlo, Jaeger finally got Claire back, they married last year and were expecting their first child. Milk spawned two boys, fuck he'd been out for a long time.
Brotherhood meant leave no one behind. He had Oyster's back, he did what had to be done to save his brother from jail. Sentencing himself, ruining his own life.
He got nothing left. No wife, no family. Sure, his bros had always cared, hanging out, working out, having him in for all their kids birthdays, family barbecues, even last Christmas when Claire and Jaeger announced the good news.
They all exploded, hugging Claire and clapping Jaeger's shoulder, whooping and cheering like madmen.
He was genuinely happy for both of them and tried to ignore the stab in his guts.
For once he wanted and was in the mood to celebrate. Till his eyes landed on the blessed couple's wedding pic pinned on the wall, then spotted another showing his brothers in uniform, proudly posing with the groom.
Stab.
He wasn't there and it killed him.
Claire told him they got a seat settled in his honor and it hurt more deeply.
He had missed so many events, so many people.
Oyster.
He had spent most of his miserable life to raise his little brother -half brother but who cares?- kicked his ass every morning to have him secured at school, kicking his own ass to quit both grief and booze and pass his exams to assure them a future.
Look what future both fucked up.
If only he could have the slightest news of him, knowing his brother was fine and safe somewhere in Canada, a letter, a call, an emoji on whatever social media... but no. The cops were still looking for Oyster for Ben Daley's murder and as a cop -ex cop- he knew he and his mates have been under surveillance since day one.
Oyster had been MIA for 3 years with no chance of brightest days.
And he was left alone with nobody to care for and nobody to love.
His sentence had him kicked out from the police department, along with his staff sergeant status. No job. No rules to give rhythm to his days. No incomes but a few light works here and there in the neighborhood. The people he knew always put in a good word about him and hopefully people didn't ask for his criminal record before hiring him for fixing their roof, painting their fronts or uprooting a tree stump.
Yeah he had a lot to add to his resume: by-the-book cop, dauntless staff sergeant in the Marine corps, 2 rounds in Iraq, baby sitter and groundskeeper. Impressive.
"Man, look at this chick over there." Milk nudged him. "She's been eyeing you like she's willing to drop her panties for you."
Cal finally lifted his eyes and glanced at the girl in question. Thin, sexy, a blouse full of goodies, gaudy red lipstick, prying eyes.
Maybe he needed to get laid. He hadn't had sex since he came out of prison. His mates planned a party to celebrate his freedom and got him a working girl for the occasion but he wasn't in the mood.
He hadn't been interested in sex, not after what has happened in prison, not even a quick handjob while watching a porn. No. Scratch that. He's been forced into lame and painful wankings when his balls threatened to explode, but it was no fun at all. Far, far from it.
A slight nausea invaded his throat of the reminder and he forced the thought out.
Double sentence. If he hadn't suffered PTSD after what he did and witnessed in Iraq, then he got his trauma.
He might never use his cock again. Playground out of order. Broken.
"Nahhh... She looks cheap. Guys I don't need another blind date, you know. Your Tracy girl was crazy, she scared the shit out of me with her earlobe-licking... fetishism." Cal rubbed his earlob with a disgusting frown on his face, having all his skwad laughing out loud, wiggling all tongues out.
"Listen Cal. You need to get laid. You need a good fuck to come back to life. You're hot stuff still, you just need to pick up some gorgeous chick and have some fun! Before your dick just deceases from dehydration." Jaeger joked, hilarity ensued.
He looked around the crowded bar, tired. Tired to pretend he could be interested in that kind of date.
He didn't need a one night stand. He didn't need some cunt to fuck. He needed someone to love. And be loved in return.
Like the ol'time when he lived with his mom. Or with Oyster. He needed someone who cared.
"Thank you guys but I'm tired. I better go home and get some sleep. Need to wake up early and..."
His lame excuses got cut off by an angry Milk.
"Oh yeah, because you do have so much to do tomorrow, don't you? Cleaning up the house and walk Mrs Riley's pet? That's why you're leaving your brothers now? Cal, when are you going to get rid of this shit and be alive again? It's been 3 years already, move on for fuck sake!"
Cal didn't blink. He deserved to be scolded by his gang. He's been no fun, nothing more than a burden for them. A big piece of shit, whining about all he'd lost. Poor thing. Soon he'd lose them.
He was whining again. He's got the best friends he could dream of, people he could call his brothers, who were totally devoted to him, heart and soul.
His family. His home.
Those guys made it all easy for him while his time in prison. Paying him a visit each week, twice a week when they were off. They paid for his lawyer, his loan for the house so he wouldn't be homeless when he got out of prison. So he didn't have to break into his savings and get ruined in 6 months.
They did it in a heartbeat, without thinking nor asking for his permission. They told him it was the right thing to do. The same way Cal had them home, safe and sound after their tour in Iraq. Beside Jaeger's leg, abandoned there. How guilty he had felt, and still.
He owed them... everything.
He leant on his elbows and rubbed his face. He considered staying and trying to relax and have some fun, but his mood was definitely shitty.
Time to shake his thoughts and his big ass. He survived the war, survived in jail, he could survive this night.
"OK fuckers. But I don't want to bury my future here." He emptied his drink, slammed it loudly on the table.
"Let's get home and shake the walls!"
He grabbed his other beer and clinked glasses with his mates, and chugged it whilst his bros cheered and downed their own drinks.
"Last one at my mailbox is a loser!" Cal jumped on his feet and started running through the door.
"Ohhhh, you bastard!" Milk shouted, running after him, quickly followed by an enthusiast Snowball.
Jeager rolled his eyes and took out his wallet to pay the bill. He wouldn't win anyway, his fucking metal leg was no match for those big machines.
The three guys were messing around by the front door, playfully wrestling to pass first.
Cal jammed Milk's head in between his bulging biceps and disheveled his neat hairstyle, having him struggling even more for his freedom, grunting with rage. Snowball was stuck against the wall, the two heavy guys struggling were keeping him to head towards the door.
In a joint effort to get free, Snowball and Milk pushed Cal with all their strength until he popped out like a Champagne cork, sent flying against the wall. Just as the door opened on someone coming in.
Cal ended up glued to them, pinned on the wall, crushed against his broad chest.
"Whoah, whoah, whoah! What the hell?" A muffled voice came from underneath Cal's body.
"Holy shit, I'm sorry!" He apologized, peeling his body from a smaller and thinner one.
His hands flat against the wall, each side of a face. A beautiful face. Still blurry, he was too close to focus.
Never too close... he thought. Her smell itself made him stop.
"I'm sorry!" He uttered, forcing a step back. Finally able to focus on delicate features.
"I'm fine, I'm fine...uh, hey... I'm Jessica. " She said in a big grin as she rearranged the strands of hair away from her face.
"Nice to meet you..." She started, inviting him to introduce himself.
"Milk, nice to meet you gorgeous." The bastard spoke first, getting on Cal's business, more than happy to embarrass his mate.
"And this is Snowball" he continued, shamelessly stepping on Cal's toes and bluntly pushing him to the side.
"Ma'am!" Snowball bowed before an amused Jessica, glancing at the three boys with a smirk. "Please, accept our sincere apologies. I hope this giant idiot didn't hurt you when so roughly trying to get your attention."
Jessica let her eyes wander at the big stud's body and face, making sure it didn't turn into a stare. The man was built like a brick house, huge arms, solid chest, his short hair suggested he was a cop or a soldier, his handsome face obviously annoyed by his friends' demeanour. His gorgeous self nodding his head while pressing his so soft looking lips together. She felt her heart stop and her inside melt when they locked stares. His blue eyes were captivating and something slapped her in the face. Through his hilarious expression and attractive features, he looked so... sad and lonely. So much she wanted to pull him in in a hug and never let him go.
She forced her eyes back at the two dummies still making the show for her.
"And this!" Milk nudged his pal, "this is Chris Callahan, the man you need.
The thoughtfulness itself, well, when it's not nearly killing you, this guy is not only strong, courageous and handsome, thanks God he's also single."
Cal wanted nothing more than vanish from embarrassment after getting rid of that motherfucker of a so called best friend. On a definitive way.
But the more Milk was blurting his shit out, the more Jessica looked amused and kind of interested in him.
Eyeing him. The cutest smile on her lips. Which she bit when she finally was caught staring.
"This big sweet heart is to take darling, and you'd be a fool not to try your luck with him."
Milk got a little closer and lowered his voice "I heard he's got amazing skills, like... look at the size of his feet!"
The 2 guys barked a laugh, clunching at each other while Cam just chuckled and sighed, more uncomfortable than ever. Jessica shared the guys big laugh then winked at Cal, before glancing down to judge their size by herself.
Milk wiped the tears from his face, oh Lord he loved making fun of his mate so very much. Calming down his panting, he stepped back, still hooked to an exhilarated Snowball.
"If you want to excuse us mylady, we're up for a male race contest, where the loser will have to walk butt naked the entire week." He said, bowing out at Jessica, then stepping out of the bar with renewed loud laughs.
Cal just shifted uneasily on his spot, figuring out a way to stop looking like the dumbest guy on Earth.
"Sorry... That was... pretty awkward, wasn't it?" He shyly tried, mentally kicking in own ass to not have found something clever to say.
"Found it very funny actually, you guys made my day!" Her genuine smile cheered him up a little.
"Those guys are total weirdoes, please do not believe a single word of what they say." Cal flashed one of his best smile, pretty sure it would work for him.
"Seems your friends think very highly of you. The resume they made of you is quite appealing, you know." She made it sounds like a joke but couldn't help wondering about that nice guy, nice looking guy all in embarrassment in front of her.
And the size of his... feet.
"Yeah... Well, wait to meet them once they're not drunk and you might hear a different story." Cal shoved his hands deep in his pockets. Looking so cute.
"So... Cal, I'm looking forward to hang out with your smartass group of friends, and hear all kind of stories about you, I bet each more embarrassing than the last!" Jessica's fingers were playing with a strand of her hair against her will, flirting.
And it seemed this didn't get unnoticed, by the way Cal's stare lingered on her delicate features.
"I... I've got to go and look after those drunken asses before they get into more trouble. I won't stop hearing of it if I don't beat them tonight. It was so nice to meet you and again, apologies for so rudely bumping into you."
Chris scratched the back of his neck, torn between two options. Stay and risk to embarrass himself more and more, or leave and risk to never see her again.
"It's OK, Chris I'm fine. We would find a way to make it up for nearly knocking me down earlier. Go get them, we could meet another time. I'm new in town but I'm here for some time, let's catch up later!"
Chris chuckled, mumbled a cocky "sure!" through an enormous grin, dared to throw a wink at her before turning heels and walked out of the bar.
"I hope you lose!" She shouted at him as he reluctantly started to jog towards his mates.
"Thank you...?" Chris turned to face her again, walking backward, wearing an astonished expression. That was not the kind of support he expected.
"I may not know much about you, but I figured seeing you walk up the streets butt naked could be fun!"
Chris couldn't help the large grin taped on his face to turn into a big smile, that charismatic pant-dropping smile that had been MIA for years was finally back.
As he jogged back to his drunken brothers, in absolute no hurry, a light in heart, he felt like that stupid smile wouldn't leave his face for quite a while.

I couldn’t help myself. Have some more Ace Attorneys dӕmons.
---
On the other side of the glass, Maya Fey lifts her head for the first time since Phoenix has met her. Confusion and hope swim in her eyes.
“You’ll defend me? Are you sure?”
“Not like you have a lot of options,” Dawn mutters at his side, too quietly for Maya to hear.
“I wouldn’t offer if I wasn’t sure,” Phoenix says firmly.
Maya’s eyes shine with tears. “But… why? You don’t even know me. You walked into that room and saw me with my sister’s body. For all you know, I did kill her, so why—”
“Of course you didn’t kill her,” Phoenix says sharply. “You’re right, I did see you. I saw you crying over her. I saw how shocked and frightened you were to see her like that.” Across from him, Maya’s tears fall. “I know you didn’t hurt her, and that means someone else did. And if you go down for this, then they’ll get away with it, and I can’t let that happen.”
Maya lifts her chin further. The dӕmon in her lap finally stirs and stands up straighter. It’s a raven, and Maya’s grief shows through in its dull eyes and poorly groomed feathers. “All right,” Maya says, hands curling into fists. “Then I’m in your hands. Ask me anything, and I’ll tell you whatever I can.”
“Ask her what’s with that weird get-up,” Dawn mutters to him. “It’s been bugging me since last night.”
Phoenix is about to hush her when Maya cocks her head. “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Was your dӕmon asking about my clothes?”
“Don’t mind her,” he says, wincing. “We were just curious, but we didn’t mean—”
“It’s okay.” Maya smiles ruefully. “I get that question a lot, from humans.”
“Humans?” Phoenix echoes.
“Yes.” Maya gestures down at her loose, eastern-style robes, and the oddly-shaped pendant around her neck. “This is the traditional garb of my clan. The Kurain witches originated from eastern Asia, but a few centuries ago we migrated across the ocean and settled in new territory on the west coast of North America. I mean… it wasn’t America yet back then, but… you get the idea.”
“You’re a witch?” Phoenix’s mouth falls open. “Wait—if Mia was your sister… was she a witch, too?”
“Of course.” Maya smiles sadly. “All daughters are witches, and all sons are human. That’s… how it works.”
“Wait a minute, wait a minute.” Phoenix shakes his head. “I remember studying this in law school. If you’re a witch and Mia was a witch, then how are they holding you for Mia’s murder? I thought witches handle their own justice, no matter where the crime is committed. You’re supposed to have diplomatic immunity or something.”
Maya winces. “It’s… complicated. See, Mia left home years ago, and one of the first things she did was apply for citizenship here. It’s… not really common for a witch to do that, but she wanted to study and practice law, and citizenship made it easier. But now…”
“As a US citizen, Mia was legally a human being,” Phoenix finishes for her. “Which gives the state the authority to put you on trial for her murder.”
Maya nods. “Right. I’m sure she didn’t mean for that to happen, but…”
Dawn hops up, putting her paws on the little shelf below the window so that she can see better. “Why did Mia want to become a lawyer in the first place?” she asks. “I mean, we never would’ve guessed she was a witch because… well, witches don’t tend to care much about human affairs. Since they—er, you live so long, and everything.”
At first, Maya doesn’t answer. Then, wriggling out of her arms, her raven dӕmon flutters up to perch by the window.
“There was an… incident, fifteen years ago,” he says.
Dawn lowers her head so that they’re on equal eye level. “What kind of incident?”
“A murder,” the raven replies. “There was an uproar over it at the time, and it brought human law officers to the Kurain clan. They were out of leads, so they asked for magical aid.”
“And… your clan agreed?” Phoenix asks.
“There’s an ability,” Maya speaks up suddenly. “It’s very rare, even among witches. Only certain family lines have it: the ability to channel the dead. Our mother had it. My sister had it.” She touches the pendant around her neck. “I was born with it, too. Our mother used it to contact the victim. A human was arrested—the only person who could have committed the murder—but he was acquitted. And…” Her voice caught.
“Mother’s involvement was kept secret,” her dӕmon continued. “It couldn’t get out that witches had interfered in a humans’ criminal investigation. But a man… found out. He exposed it to the world, and it spread like a wildfire. Everyone knew that she helped them, and that she was wrong.”
“She had to give up her place as clan queen,” Maya says quietly.
Phoenix almost chokes on the air he’s breathing, at the same time as Dawn splutters, “Your mom was a queen—”
“She left the clan, not long after that. No one knows where she went. And years later, Mia left, too.” Maya takes a deep breath. “She wanted to find out who hurt our mother like that. And the only way she knew how was to play by human rules for a while.”
“That seems… drastic,” says Dawn.
“She was our mother,” Maya says sharply. “And that man—that stranger hurt her. Don’t you understand? There was a reason they kept her help a secret. The Kurain clan almost lost all of its alliances. The only reason we aren’t pariahs among our sister clans is that my mother abdicated and exiled herself. He put all of us in danger when he did that to her.” Her tearstained eyes harden with anger. “Mia couldn’t find another way. She had to find evidence so he could be put on trial among humans, and make sure he was found guilty. And that way—”
“He’d be subject to a witch’s justice,” Phoenix says faintly.
That’s a big part of diplomacy with witches. If a human commits a crime against a witch, the humans are the ones who hold the trial, but the witches get to decide the punishment on a guilty verdict.
It’s usually death. Witches don’t screw around.
Wait, death. Of course!
In an instant, Phoenix has a brainwave. “Wait a minute—Ms. Fey, you’re a witch. And you said you have this ability too, right? This magic spirit-channeling? So you could contact Mia’s spirit!”
Maya wilts. “I… no. I can’t. I’m sorry.”
“But—”
“We’re still learning magic,” her dӕmon says sadly. “It takes a lot of power to call a spirit back, and we just… We aren’t as strong as Mia was.”
“Zech and I aren’t even separated yet,” Maya says softly, stroking his wing. “We were supposed to perform the ritual this year. Mia said—” Her voice breaks again. “Mia said she and Archimedes would come to the North with us.”
Phoenix’s heart sinks, both with sympathy and with disappointment. Of course it couldn’t be that easy to find the murderer and give this poor girl closure.
“Okay,” he says. “That’s alright. We’ll just have to do this the human way. I’ll take it from here, okay? I’ll figure this out.”
Maya nods, then says, “White.”
“What?”
“The man who hurt our mother. I don’t know his full name, but my sister told me that much. His name is White. I know it’s not much, but maybe it’s a place to start.”
Phoenix sighs. This is so much bigger than he thought it would be. “Okay. Thanks, Ms. Fey. You’ve given me… a whole lot, actually.”
Maya smiles. “Whatever it takes to avenge my sister,” she says.
“...Okay.”
“We’re more of a justice guy than a revenge guy, but to each their own,” Dawn says.
“It’s our way,” Maya answers. “We prefer to put things to rest permanently.”
Dawn is about to get off the shelf, but hesitates. “Speaking of that… something’s bugging me. And maybe it’s not relevant, but it’s… well, you know, it’s bugging me.”
“What is it?” Maya asks.
“Well, everybody knows witches keep to themselves,” Dawn says. “They live so long that countries change all the time, they don’t care about money because money changes too, so… how did those detectives convince your mom to help them?”
Maya blinks. “Oh, that. Well, it’s true that we don’t care for possessions and we don’t have currency, but we do trade in favors.”
“So the police owe your clan a favor?” Phoenix asks.
“No, the favor was already paid, in a way.” Maya pauses. “I don’t know a lot about this, because I’m only one hundred and seventy and our aunt always said I should be focused on training instead of poking my nose in politics—”
“Only a hundred and seventy,” Phoenix says weakly.
“But the murder didn’t just cause a stir among humans,” Maya says. “The victim had friends in the witch clans, including my own.” She purses her lips, stroking her dӕmon again. “You have to understand, we value our allies and friends. Especially human ones, since we already have so little time with them. We don’t take their deaths lightly.”
“So the witches had a real stake in finding the killer,” Dawn mutters. “It wasn’t just a random favor.”
“Right,” Maya replies. “He was a friend to some of us. I even heard that a witch from another clan had a child by him. It was a son, though, so he would have been human.” She pauses. “I was focused on training when this happened, so I don’t know any details. I’m not sure if it helps.”
“It helps a lot,” Phoenix assures her, not altogether certain that it does. “It’s better than going into this blind.”
“Speaking of which, we’d better get going,” Dawn says, finally hopping down. “We’re burning daylight, and we still have to weasel evidence out of that detective.”
Phoenix nods. “Okay. Sit tight, Ms. Fey. We’ll take it from here.”
For a moment, Maya Fey locks eyes with him. “Thank you, Mr. Wright,” she says, with a solemness that looks almost eerie on a face that looks no older than seventeen. The ragged black raven perched beside her only enhances the effect. “I won’t forget what you’ve done for me, and my sister.”
Phoenix can’t think of a response yet, because so far he hasn’t done much besides ask a bunch of questions and make a promise that he’s not completely sure he can keep. So he nods stiffly, and walks away.
“That was eerie,” Dawn remarks as they leave the detention center.
“Yeah.”
“And, you do realize—”
“What?”
“Witches don’t do money,” she points out. “We’re not getting paid for this one, either.”
“I’m… not completely sure that’s true,” Phoenix says. “Witches value favors and allies, remember? Something tells me that if we pull this off, we’ll be repaid… somehow. With a favor. From an almost two-hundred-year-old witch.” He took a deep breath. “The important thing is, she’s Mia’s sister, and that’s all the reason we need. Right?”
“Right.” Dawn squares her shoulders and picks up the pace, tail held high like a banner. “Well then… let’s go find ourselves a wolf.”

The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 15
(spoilers for everything MDZS/Untamed)
[covers MDZS chapters 57 and 58]
Yunmeng pain meter: 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪 out of a possible 10 🔪
(no WangXianness to measure, so I’m counting knives instead)
I’m going to be honest: the next couple of episodes are NOT my favorites in the series. First of all, there’s the almost unrelenting Yunmeng pain we’re subjected to, followed by that weirdness in Yiling (which I will get into when I get there) and then there’s even more pain. Not to mention, Lan Zhan’s pretty much MIA during this episode and the next three, and while it’s understandable why he’s not involved, I still really felt his absence and missed him a lot. As a result, I kind of dragged my heels on getting to this episode during this rewatch since I wanted to give myself some time to prepare for the arduous emotional turmoil that lied ahead. Stupidly, as a means of procrastination, I decided to read “The [Dumb] Husky and his White Cat Shizun” (aka 2HA/二哈和他的白猫师尊) by Meatbun Does Not Eat Meat, thinking that it would perhaps provide me with a bit of levity before I delved into all the Yunmeng pain.  Oh my God, was THAT a WRONG decision.  HORRIBLY WRONG. It was equivalent to me choosing to jump into the hot oil in order to escape from the frying pan...so now the frying pan isn’t looking too bad anymore. Here’s the thing, I had not read any spoilers about 2HA, only heard that it was really good, and I figured, it had to at least be less painful than MXTX-laoshi's Heaven Official’s Blessing (aka TGCF/天官赐福) because I DID hear how painful that is, so even though TGCF is also in my queue, I figured, I’ll read 2HA first to alleviate my mood. I am literally still trying to recover from the emotional scars that 2HA left in my poor weak heart. Seriously, Meatbun-laoshi owes me 300 more chapters of bliss to make up for all that suffering. It’s not that MXTX-laoshi didn‘t leave scars on my heart—I have plenty from MDZS/The Untamed too, and to a lesser degree from Scum Villain as well—but I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that 2HA left two-fold the amount of both of them combined.  I shudder to think what TGCF is going to do to me since I’ve been told in terms of devastation it’s even worse than MDZS and SVSSS, but I’m not sure how it ranks next to 2HA.  Just to be on the safe side, I definitely don’t think I’m going to touch that novel until I’ve finished crying through The Untamed all over again.
And wow did I cry a lot during this episode, and it’s only the start of the Yunmeng pain.  I chose to highlight the scene above where Madame Yu bitch-slaps the shit out of Wang Lingjiao because it’s really the only jovial-adjacent moment in this episode and the next ones. The first time I saw this scene, I laughed my ass off and cheered out loud since Madame Yu was doing what I pretty much wanted to do to Wang Lingjiao since back in the Xuanwu of Slaughter’s cave when she branded Wei Ying. But now, it doesn’t bring me as much joy as it did when I watched it for the first time, knowing that it is the essential domino that gets knocked over which lead to the subsequent cascade of events that brought about the near-obliteration of the Yunmeng Jiang sect, the deaths of Mama and Papa Jiang, all the emotional and physical suffering that the three Yunmeng siblings experience, and of course the drastically different and ultimately tragic turn that Wei Ying’s life takes. So even though the bitch-slap scene still makes me smile, it mostly fills me with dread now, especially because of how quickly things take a turn for the worse. Of course I wish Madame Yu had succeeded in murdering every Wen sect member in that room, that Wang Lingjiao didn’t get a chance to summon Wen Zhuliu or succeed in sending that signal to bring Wen Chao and the wrath of the Wen sect down upon the Yunmeng Jiang sect. But perhaps what is the saddest aspect of the whole thing is, even if none of that happened, that STILL doesn’t mean the Jiangs and the rest of the sect would have escaped their destiny because there was no way Wen Chao or even Wen Ruohan would have let them get away with killing Wang Lingjiao and Wen sect members. So the destruction of the Yunmeng sect was inevitable sooner or later. More importantly, if the events didn’t lead to Wei Wuxian losing his golden core, getting thrown in the Burial Mounds, and practicing demonic cultivation, then the Wen sect’s rule over the cultivation world, and maybe even the world in general, would’ve been absolute and undeterred since the Sunshot Campaign was pretty much won because of Wei Ying. So basically, there is no way to escape horror and tragedy: no matter what line of dominoes got knocked over, they all eventually lead to an abyssmal pit of misery.
So Many Tears
Really I should just go through this episode by tracking the amount of times I teared up or straight up just cried, starting with this moment:
Tumblr media
Seeing Madame Yu whip Wei Ying just made my heart ache so much: it’s one of my least favorite scenes of the entire show; so much so that this might be only the second time I’ve watched this moment all the way through. Actually, I can probably say the same about this episode and the next one as well: I think this is only the second time that I’ve been able to sit through these episodes from beginning to end since the first time I watched them. What makes this scene especially sad for me is the uncertainty of whether or not Madame Yu was just whipping Wei Ying for show and took no pleasure in it, or did she secretly relish this opportunity because she disliked Wei Ying that much. Considering their history, it’s hard not to believe that it’s probably mostly the latter. And while I want to think that she would have felt bad about cutting off Wei Ying’s hand, the unfortunate truth is that I’m sure she would’ve gotten over that pretty quickly. If it wasn’t for Wang Lingjiao bringing up the matter of turning their home into a supervisory office for the Wen Sect, Wei Ying definitely would have lost that hand, that was pretty clear. It’s rather disheartening that Madame Yu didn’t even try to talk Wang Lingjiao out of that punishment. I remember wishing that at the last minute she would come around and ask for mercy on Wei Ying’s behalf, even though that would have been out of character for her.  So while her compliance wasn’t unexpected, it was still disappointing at the same time because if it had been Jiang Fengmian, no doubt SOME attempt would’ve been made to save Wei Ying’s hand. But at the end of the day, that’s unfortunately the nature of Wei Ying’s relationship with Madame Yu, which to me is one of her biggest flaws as a person. I love her overall, I think I’ve made that pretty clear, but her inability to forgive the existence of this orphan and accept him as one of her own is really her most upsetting trait, because even though she’s constantly arguing with her husband, she obviously does love and care about him.
Tumblr media
I actually thought this was a really sweet moment since it plainly showed how much Madame Yu cared about Jiang Fengmian, even though she would never admit so in front of everyone, and I love the “kids” reaction. They’re probably used to scenarios like this so their little smiles just made the moment cuter and more real.
Even though what we’ve seen of the interactions between the Jiang parents was usually contentious, I appreciate the fact that we also got some sweetness like this moment, even though it also made me sad that they couldn’t be more loving to each other because Madame Yu couldn’t  get over her own petty jealousy over a dead woman. I actually teared up during the scene when her Zidian transferred over to her husband right after Jiang Fengmian clearly expressed his doubt it would answer to him.
Tumblr media
To me, this moment really encapsulated how disharmonious their relationship was, how out of sync they were as a couple. Even though Madame Yu clearly loved her husband enough to grant him ownership of her most prized sentient weapon, she never told him and he himself had NO IDEA of his wife’s feelings for him whatsover to the point that he didn’t even think the weapon would respond to him.  There’s just something so sad about that whole scenario that it literally makes my heart ache for the Jiangs. I really wish there had been more understanding, communication and forgiveness in their marriage, and less jealousy, resentment and obstinacy.  It wouldn’t have changed their fates, but at least their time together would have been happier and their family life would’ve been more joyful and peaceful.
Even More Tears for Wei Wuxian
My heart really broke for Wei Ying during both Madame Yu and Jiang Fengmian’s farewell scenes with their children because of how obviously different they treated him compared to Jiang Cheng and Shijie. I think when this episode first aired, I had only started reading the novel so I didn’t know just how bitter Madame Yu felt towards Wei Ying; therefore, when I initially watched this moment, I was actually holding on to the hope that at the last minute, she would come around and even if she did not give him a hug then perhaps at least she would soften up a little towards him.
Tumblr media
Of course that was super crazy wishful thinking on my part, and honestly considering how this was the last time she would ever see Wei Ying again—this boy whom she more or less watched grow up into a man—she was pretty fucking brutal. The contrast between her attitude toward her son and Wei Ying almost took my breath away. I can only imagine Wei Ying probably never felt more unloved and like a servant than in that moment. Just looking at the screencap right now is making my eyes well up again for him. He looked so HURT.
Tumblr media
Not to mention, her last words to Wei Ying really is pretty devastating, considering how momentous a catalyst it ended up being. He essentially gave up his life and future because of her words. And it’s not that Wei Ying wouldn’t have sacrificed himself for Jiang Cheng anyway, but I’m sure her words, and Jiang Fengmian’s shortly after, is what drove him on to make the decision he did at Yiling, which lead to just about every tragic event in this first lifetime afterwards.
Speaking of Jiang Fengmian’s farewell, it also made my heart hurt so much for Wei Ying because even though Papa Jiang’s good-bye was much more warm and gentle than Madame Yu’s, if there ever was even a smidgen of suspicion in Wei Ying’s mind that the rumors of him being Jiang Fengmian’s illegitimate child were true, his final parting words and gesture to him compared to how he is with Jiang Cheng and Shijie had to have put that thought to rest.
Tumblr media
There was no tender face touching, just a good old shoulder grab followed by instructions to take care of his two children. I know the argument would be, well, Jiang Cheng and Shijie ARE his actual biological children, why wouldn’t Jiang Fengmian be more affectionate towards them in their final time together? Very valid, of course, but I guess I was also hoping his actions wouldn’t be any different among the three of them because he seemed to have really loved Wei Ying as well, to the degree that both his son and wife got jealous of his seeming favoritism. If only Madame Yu was also present to see this moment, she would probably realize all her jealous accusations and suspicions over the years really were utterly stupid and pointless.
They Cry, I Cry
Tumblr media
I would have to be a monster to NOT cry during this scene. I was a sobbing mess, and really. I don’t think I’ll ever not be one during this scene no matter how many times I watch it. Frankly, I don’t even want to see it again after this time because it’s just too unbelievably sad. This whole episode really drains me, and yet I know the worst is yet to come.
Ode to Jin Zhu and Yin Zhu
Tumblr media
These two ladies who are essentially Madame Yu’s right and left hands barely had any screen time or dialogue, but they more than made their mark with what they little had. Just by their defiant attitudes and the way they stood up to Wang Lingjiao, they were able to successfully convey both their status in the Jiang household and their strength of character. I really loved the economy and effectiveness of their brief time on-screen. Talk about making every single second count.  Not to mention, they were able to hold off Wen Zhuliu long enough to allow their mistress to properly say good-bye to her son, and that is definitely no small feat to accomplish. I wish we had more time with them but I do believe these two loyal attendants deserve some solid recognition and accolades.
I Hate This Asshole
Tumblr media
I wish the Wens had killed this SOB too when they obliterated his sect.  I don’t dislike Jin Guangyao or Xue Yang, but I absolutely dislike Sect Leader Yao.
VOMIT
Tumblr media
I HATE everything about this scene, and to be honest, I hate just about every scene involving Wen Ruohan in his throne room. The performance by Xiu Qing is just so horrible that I truly don’t understand WHY they gave him so much more screen time since that’s not how it was in the novel at all. I think Wen Ruohan only popped up twice in the source material, with the second time being his death scene. I know this was probably Team CQL’s way of extending the episode count but man was Wen Ruohan poorly cast. Why couldn’t they find someone closer to his donghua counterpart? Instead we’re stuck with this greasy old man who overacts in every single freaking scene he’s in. I’m not familiar with this actor’s work, I looked him up and I don’t think I’ve seen most of the shows he’s in so if he’s actually a well-respected veteran actor or something like that, and that’s why they expanded his role in The Untamed, then, wow, I’m sorry, I am just not a fan at all.  As for the other crap going on in that throne room, don’t even get me started on those shitty Yin Metal zombies. So. Damn. CRINGEY. Everything about these Qishan scenes are really a big blemish on the show.
Questions I Still Have
Don’t really have any...really too sad to think.
Overall Episode Rating: 7 Lil Apples out of 10
