SHORT QUESTION: Could you tell me if being blonde was common in Ancient Greece?
CONTEXT: I saw a lot of Greek people talk about how having dark hair was more common, so I thought it was (context: they were criticizing how Greeks are sometimes portrayed as always blonde). But there are many mythological characters (a lot of the gods, Cassandra, Helen, Menelaus, Achilles, Clytemnestra, etc.) being represented as blonde (although some vary. I've seen Menelaus redhead, Cassandra brunette and I've seen more Clytemnestra brunette than she blonde).
It could just be a common mistake, but many are usually based on some ancient source that actually either claims these people were blonde (or at least light-haired, like red or light brown) or leaves it implied. I started thinking it might be something more deity-related since most of the ones I saw were gods or demigods, but then we have people like Cassandra and Menelaus. And so I thought it was one of those cases where the general population isn't like that, but that's the standard of beauty, but I'm not sure and that's why I came to ask.
Hello! I'll try to answer this very plainly. Blond hair is and has been quite a rare genetic trait in the Mediterranean. Blond hair is still considered "special" in some way in Greece. In antiquity it was extremely special because it was so rare. (Like blue eyes). It was a "godly" trait/quality almost, because it was so rare. That's why significant characters in the Greek myths can appear to be blond.
Percentage of blond people in Europe:
Tumblr media
I should also say that the Greek "blond" differs from the UK and Norwegian "blond". So that's why a blond N. European can look "too pale" to play a blond Greek. (Ofc all types of Greeks exist, including very very blond Greeks, but I'm just talking about general percentages)

About that post of yours about people getting upset about Patroclus and Achilles being seen romantically, I've seen every single thing that made me so "wtf?"
I've seen them use the justification that they're cousins, from some sources. This doesn't make sense bc cousins getting along in Ancient Greece wasn't all that fuss, it's not like they were brothers! And they're cousins once removed…Orestes and Hermione are first cousins and no one finds it strange!
I've seen people use the justification that Achilles is married (Deidamia). Firstly, it depends on the source, secondly…he still has Briseis? There are sources that there are Briseis and OTHER characters (e.g. Polixena). Even in the sources where he's married, that doesn't stop him from doing anything. Not only Achilles but other characters! Agamemnon has been married for years and had Chryseis and Cassandra. Odysseus is married and his lovers vary with sources. Even before Helen was kidnapped, Menelaus already had a child with another woman. "Ah, but he would still prefer Deidamia, just as Odysseus and Menelaus still preferred Penelope and Helen" well, Agamemnon explicitly states that he prefers Chryseis, and Jason preferred Creusa over Medea…maybe we can assume that different characters are different characters!
I've seen people use the justification that both he and Patroclus had slaves… which, again, doesn't change anything. Again, married men had slaves, I don't know why we're pretending otherwise. Having a slave does not prevent having other relationships, after all, not even a legitimate wife prevents it (or married men wouldn't have bed slaves in the first place). "Ah, but that shows they like women in mythology!"…yeah…but well, some people like more than one gender. That still doesn't rule anything out, I don't see where we're going!
I've seen people explain that it's bc this is something modern… which isn't, there were already romantic interpretations of them in antiquity (Aeschylus, hello? Plato?). But then you point that out and they say "well, but it's not Homer" but then they bring up things like Polyxena and Penthesilea as proof and…their myths with Achilles aren't Homeric! And then they say it's not one of the explicitly declared couples…which, again, doesn't stop anything?? Even more so bc one of the people I saw saying this shipped two characters who never had any romantic text or subtext so it's a walking contradiction!
And even with this "explicit couples" thing, I've seen people talk about a vibe like "oh why focus on Patrochilles, which isn't even canon when there's Apollo x Hyacintus" and I'm still trying to find WHAT is the similarity between these two ships besides being between two male characters. Not even tragedy can be considered a determining factor since tragic couples are not exactly rare in mythology…like, oh tragic couple, so Megara x Heracles is the same too! C'mon, guys! I got the impression that these people have the idea that the ship only exists bc it's MLM and, therefore, any MLM ship plays the role even when the dynamics AREN'T the same…
Or they'll say "the fans make them into a straight stereotype of rigid gender roles", which if you go to the Ao3 tag and read the fics is easily refuted! Especially for Achilles, who depending on the fic isn't even a perisex cis man. But they really don't know the majority preferences of shippers bc e.g there's an idea that absolutely everyone is strictly bottom Pat x top Achilles bc "furious warrior Achilles" and "cool guy Patroclus"… which's funny bc it couldn't be further from reality! And the same person who says this has a ship with strict gender roles, for the love of god!
Even if the ship were canonically impossible… well, hcs exist! As a kid, I watched Naruto and thought Ino x Sakura was very cute, but that doesn't mean I DIDN'T notice that the canon couple was going to be Sakura x Sasuke. It looks like they've never seen shipping before, my god!
Finally: I left the most absurd for last. This wasn't on Tumblr, it was on another social network. Basically, user kind of texted something like "of course you like Patroclus x Achilles, you're not Greek!" And I'm still trying to understand the relationship between someone being Greek and someone liking or not liking a ship. Could it be that in the documents that ask for nationality, if you put "Greek" a questionnaire appears asking you if you ship Patrochilles and if you click "yes" you are taken for falsifying your nationality or something like that?
P.S.: You don't even need to answer this ask. I really just needed to comment on this nonsense, and my friends aren't mythology fans, so here we are!
Okay so I'm just over here nodding aggressively to a lot of things you said, I know you said I don't need to reply to this but let me just add a couple thoughts:
1. Seriously the cousin thing is laughable to me, like who cares who CARES!! Literally it doesn't even matter, not only were romantic relationships btwn cousins not that big a deal in ancient greek works and mythology but also there are so many literary works written before the 20-21st century that feature cousins falling in love, like in the realm of fiction at least it isn't the big and shocking thing the antis think it is, and it hasn't been for centuries, I don’t get why people get so worked up about that...... it doesn’t even count as an argument, moving on
2. People saying that Achilles can't possibly be queer because he sleeps with women and has a son etc etc..... I feel like they’re missing the point, because the thing about Achilles, in my opinion, isn't whether he’s gay or not, or even if he’s bi or not. Those neat little categories are a relatively modern invention I think, and I don’t think that any ancient person would identify as gay or straight or what have you. In some places being a little too close with your buddies (or your students, particularly young male students --athens i'm looking at you--) was a thing, in some others it wasn't, but it wasn't part of their identity like it is now, ykwim? So I think it's pointless to try to put Achilles and Patroclus in those boxes, many people have tried it and it doesn't work. Achilles may have a son with Deidamia but he doesn’t mention her in the Iliad not even once, he cares about Briseis and in the text he lies/sleeps with her but he wouldn’t stop Agamemnon's men from taking her nor would he return to the fighting for her, his relationship with or feelings for the women he sleeps/has slept with doesn't really affect his behaviour. It is Patroclus who he has the emotional bond with, Patroclus who convinces him to do something other than sulk in his camp, Patroclus whom Achilles values above all, Patroclus's death that changes the trajectory of the war and Achilles' own life. The bond between Achilles and Patroclus has cataclysmic consequences for all the Achaens and the Trojans, no other woman in Achilles' life comes close to what he has with Pat.
So like..... that's what's important here. Achilles could have slept with a thousand women and Patroclus with a thousand more and it wouldn't matter. I'm not here to argue whether they were exclusive or not sexually speaking, that's irrelevant and frankly I don't care. I also can't comment on Achilles x Polyxena or Penthesilea I'm not very familiar with those myths and they aren't even Iliad canon anyway so who cares. People have been writing fanfic about him for centuries, what's new.
3. As for the rest of the arguments against Patrochilles I have to admit I stay as far away from drama as I can so I don't really know what is being said online about them. The things you're saying honestly sound like toxic fandom behaviour and antis being at it for no goddamn reason. I'm not even going to respond to that because again, I don’t think there is anything to say. People can ship what they want and headcanon Achilles and Pat boinking any which way they want as long as they leave me alone lmao. Like as long as they don't come to my ask box or ao3 comments with dumbass or exclusionary views (or if Tumblr doesn't decide to spam me with them) then I'm good. I'm definitely not going to go looking for those views on Tumblr or elsewhere.
4. Honestly I didn't even know racism had been brought into this LMAO like I was not familiar with the take that if you're Greek you can't like Patroclus/Achilles. Like.... why is that? Why wouldn't a Greek person like Patrochilles? Do Greeks not have good taste then? I don't get it. Maybe it's because the Iliad is so deeply rooted into ancient greek culture and we learn about it in school or what not, so like it has to be this sacred thing that no one can touch/spoil? For me, shipping ancient dudes is the best way to actually learn a thing or two about history and literature and what have you LOL like I care so much more about the Iliad now than I did in high school. The sad thing is that I feel like if I ever told people irl that I ship Patrochilles they would first be baffled and then probably appalled lmao I can't even imagine their reaction if they ever saw the Patrochilles shrine I keep in my study 😂 Homophobia is a big thing here sadly, and I personally know people who would literally fight anyone who says that mlm was a thing in ancient Greece (because as we know the ancient greeks were the pinnacle of perfection and wisdom and the gays now just want to ruin that 🙄). I'll never forget my high school ancient greek teacher going into a whole rant about it for an hour, and also the school textbooks we had themselves were so heavily censored. It's just such a sad way to be if you ask me, both because you're a fucking homophobe but also you're missing out on so much of the nuance of this culture that you're supposed to "revere", it's always been super baffling to me.
Anyway this rant got away from me so I'll just stop here lmao. At the end of the day I think people will just say whatever they want about whatever they want, I sometimes also get upset and hurt by those dumb takes but it's really not worth it. I try to stay in my lane and block liberally and nerd out with like minded people and I think that's what life/fandom is about, you know

upon my selective reread of Hello Stranger, I realized that Dr. Garrett Gibson stirred the interest of not one, not two, but three Kleypas heroes (and I count stirring as anything that was teased, or even a momentary attraction). We have:
Tom Severin: if a man and woman mildly antagonize each other in a romance novel as much as these two do in her introductory scene (they meet over the body of an injured Rhys Winterborne lol), then I feel like a romance is very much possible. I think Tom/Cassandra are cute, but sometimes they give Winterborne/Helen-lite vibes (sheltered aristocratic lady and the ruthless businessman who is socially below her but super obsessed with her) and it would genuinely be more intriguing to read how the railway mogul and doctor get about.
West Ravenel: He found her attractive— there was a scene from his POV where he says as much but this would have been a dull/somewhat implausible pairing considering West likes to do Farm Stuff and Dr. Gibson is a city gal
Ethan Ransom: Works because the book wills it but otherwise he might genuinely be the dullest home office agent I've ever read in historical romances, and that's before taking into account that this bitch was doing sus stuff for the British government in India AND bragging about how some Calcutta local (also because it's Calcutta, even bigger red flag imo— do you know how much shitstirring the British did in Bengal??) taught him half the positions in the Kama Sutra.

Hello one and all and welcome to the The Duchess Affair name post. This is a list of period-accurate given names you can give your MC if you need some inspiration or want to know what kinds of names ladies had back then. I've combed through the 1809 edition of Debrett's Peerage for names of noblewomen in the 1600s and 1700s in Britain, which is where I'm taking the liberty of assuming TDA is set.
As always, you can drop any questions in my inbox, I love love love playing reference librarian :-)
Most names in this period either came from the Bible or from literature. The Bible was the most common book owned and read, so Biblical names were frequently seen. Some nobles liked to show off how cultured and educated they were by naming their children after mythological figures or characters from poetry and history, but most people of all classes named children after ancestors or loved ones (which explains why it seems like it was the same dozen names getting passed around again and again.)
Very common names -- the majority of women back then had one of these names:
Anne
Caroline
Catharine (not a typo – this was the standard spelling in the 1700s!)
Charlotte
Diana
Elizabeth
Frances
Georgiana
Henrietta
Isabella
Jane
Louisa
Margaret
Maria (pronounced like “Mariah”)
Martha
Mary
Sarah
Sophia
Less common but not unheard-of names:

Laetitia/Letitia
Laura
Lucy
Marianna/Marianne
Matilda
Penelope
Priscilla
Rachael
Rebecca
Susan/Susanna/Susannah
Theodosia
Theresa
Thomasina/Thomasine
Rarities and oddities -- I only came across these names once or twice each, use them to add a bit of flavor and eccentricity!!!:
Abigail
Amabel/Amabella
Amantha
Anastasia
Angelica
Annabella
Antonia
Araminta
Beatrix
Camilla
Christiana/Christina
Clara
Clementia/Clementina

Fortescue
Gainsborough
Kingscote
Lovelace
Mountstuart
Ogilvie
Pembroke
Pierrepont

Hello hello I come bearing Sleepover Asks!
I don't know if it's too many of them but could you rank your fave Kleypas heroes 👀 (feel free to do a heroine version too I just felt like it was alot for one post ahahah)
Aw, how kind! I will for sure do a ranking of my favorite Kleypas heroes. Keep in mind that I'm keeping a few books that I knoooow will be hits (Again the Magic, Then Came You, etc) for when I'm reeeeeeally going off the rails and need something to calm me. So this is not a complete or accurate list.
But!
Derek Craven, Dreaming of You. As the movie title goes, Ieri, Oggi, Domani. I love competence, I love a dark side, I love a man being so overcome by emotion that he just loses his shit.
Kev Merripen, Seduce Me At Sunrise. Honestly, maybe the angstiest hero I've ever read. And I do love angst. I especially love angst with kidnapping.
Sebastian St. Vincent, Devil in Winter. Did somebody say... KIDNAPPING??? Not my classic hero type but theeeee definitive slutty rake hero.
Rhys Winterborne, Marrying Winterborne. It recently struck me that we should make very clear that... five fucking minutes... does not GENERALLY allude to his sexual prowess. By the way, I was sold on Winterborne when he sexually harassed Kathleen and asked her if she wanted a bit o' rough after she ruined his thing with Helen, so I liked him before it was cool.
Marcus Marsden, It Happened One Autumn. We love a lord in the streets, freak in the sheets type.
Leo Hathaway, Married by Morning. I have a thing for a crouching tiger, hidden dom type. I also think that Leo is one of the only Kleypas heroes who's said "pussy" on the page, so. Points.
Like, this is the collection of heres that I think of as *my guys* with Kleypas. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the others--I really like Keir and Gabriel, I've come to reevaluate Devon Ravenel and enjoy him a lot more, I like Nick Gentry, I think Ross Cannon is a good hero (bad first name, sigh), Jack Devlin is obviously good, Simon Hunt is an icon. Some of these books I really need to re-read sometime, too.
I know that the heroes I don't see the hype for AT THIS TIME are West Ravenel (I'm sorry that book just really didn't grab me and I really really really believe that Leo Hathaway is how you do reformed mess while keeping the edge, while West is what happens when you overdo it), Christopher Phelan (did not connect with that book), Tom Severin (I think he would've sparked with a livelier heroine, Cassandra was just too innocent for him), and Harry Rutledge (another heroine mismatch issue).
And then there are more that I'm just not jazzed about or dislike.

Hello Void,
I'm sorry to bother you so early in the morning. What I thought would be a fun way to spend my morning has landed me on a downward spiral. But talking to you always helps me clear my thoughts out.
Void- I'm so afraid. I know this is the early morning anxiety and a wake 'n bake gone wrong. But while testing the audio was connected to my headphones before I started listening to my erotic stories (my one vice because Brad isn't into BDSM), I decided to open tiktok. Only it wasn't an ad first thing. It was a video about NATOs War Warning. (I'll try to come back and name the creator if I can for posterity). Quick Google search, and yeah, it's real. An article from The Hill was the very first link.
So, this is it. I know I should be trying to keep it together and be hopeful, but... the Titanic is going down and people are still going about their business.
I have to stop because I'm spiraling.
Perhaps Apollo did not give Cassandra the gift of sight at all. Maybe he just lifted her head up to see that Paris was off to steal Helen of Sparta. She tried to warn everyone, just lift their eyes off the ground for just a moment to see for themselves, but no one could bring themselves to do it. Cassandra wasn't clairvoyant. She just looked up.
I don't know what the future holds for anyone anymore.
I'm sorry for being such a downer. I don't know why i felt the need to type that. Apologize for feeling like the world is ending while WWIII is about to start.
I need to go channel the last of this manic energy into something good, or at least try to shut my brain off for a hard rest.
I promise I'll write you a happy letter soon. But for now I need to rest.
I love you, Void.

hello angel, I hope that you are doing well.
I’m sorry if I may be pestering you... but I thought that I could ask you this. Could you perhaps display a collection of quotes revolving around “disappearing.” ?
In a sense, from everybody’s life. but still being alive. But I would appreciate anything that you post.
Again, sorry for pestering. Thank you and I wish you all of the best.
It was very easy to disappear. Very easy to put on a red coat, switch off all the lights, go somewhere else, not go back to sleep anywhere.

Perdita doesn't seem to mind this or to sense that she is in danger of losing her right to corporeality. On the contrary, she purposefully deflects attention. When someone accidentally speaks to her, she just shakes her head. If they still won't take the hint, she'll add, 'No, I'm not here,' in a gentle way rather than a snippy one.

The girl is in a trance. All day in a kind of trance… She never makes a gesture. Immobile. Confronting herself. Surprised. Somnambulistic. She only moves to become someone else.
Anaïs Nin, from Nearer the Moon: The Previously Unpublished Unexpurgated Diary, 1937-1939

Sometimes, when I'm careless, I think survival is easy: you just keep moving forward with what you have, or what's left of what you were given, until something changes—or you realize, at last, that you can change without disappearing, that all you had to do was wait until the storm passes you over and you find that—yes—your name is still attached to a living being.

I'm midway through the Ravenels books and rethinking if I want to read on because I liked Cold Hearted Rake but not the other two. Would you recommend it?
I think it depends on what you liked about Cold-Hearted Rake; if you liked the widow romance aspect, technically Devil's Daughter and Devil in Disguise might be your jam, but I didn't particularly enjoy either of those books. Devil's Daughter felt extremely low-stakes both in terms of external plot and emotionally (which is where Marrying Winterborne differentiates for me; the actual plot feels fairly light but Helen and Rhys undergo some serious development individually and as a couple, and Helen is sooooo emotionally tortured about the parentage thing), and the vibes were very.... farm-y. West talks about being a Bad Man in the way Phoebe's dad St. Vincent (Kingston now, ik) did but has far less to back it up so it feels kinda weak, and while I appreciate Phoebe learning to take charge of her late husband's estate, there's very little else to her I found interesting.
As for Devil in Disguise, the plot could have been way more interesting especially considering there's murder attempts and the reason for it, but it just fell flat for me.
So that leaves two books: Hello Stranger, which I dislike partly on principle (there's fetishization of Indian women and their sexuality being used as a teaching tool for the white man, also what the fuck was the hero, who works for the British government, doing in Bengal in the 1860s or 70s?) and partly because the couple lacked chemistry to me, and they felt very shoehorned. There's also Chasing Cassandra which I personally found cute and charming, but it reads to me like a lighter version of Marrying Winterborne; there's a self-made businessman who needs to work on his Feelings, and a sheltered aristocratic heroine who can help him with that. So I guess it depends on whether you liked Marrying Winterborne or not.

Hi Jessie! I've recently discovered I may be nonbinary and I was in the process of picking out a new name. Would it be considered offensive to pick a name inspired by one of the gods/a hero or nymph?
Hello, love! Congratulations on your discovery!
So it really depends on what you mean but “inspired by”. There’s nothing wrong with picking a name that is similar to or associated with a deities name. What’s seen as disrespectful is taking the name directly.
Honestly I’m not sure if that also applies to heroes and nymphs. It is a bit more complicated bc there are some names that have become quite popular outside of the pantheon such as Helen, Jason (who wants to be named after Jason tho 😒), and Cassandra. Personally I would lean on the side of caution and not name myself directly after any member of the pantheon but that’s just me.
