Help me out here: Why is there so much Ian Flynn hate going around lately? I thought everyone loved that he was contributing to the games. Now suddenly they aren't. I guess that's par for the course for this series but I don't get it. He isn't perfect but I like what he's done. Am I a weirdo?
Ian Flynn has always had a lot of fans, but any creator putting their work out there is going to have detractors as well. That's just the nature of being an artist. To some extent, it's no big deal. He's not a perfect writer. Nobody is! I consider myself a fan of his work, but I've criticized plenty of individual writing decisions from him on here.
But Ian doesn't just have critics. He has his own obsessive hatedom. And the specific nature of Ian's hatedom is... interesting.
A decade ago, Ian was only the guy writing for Archie Sonic, meaning any debates over his work were quarantined within that tiny niche of the larger Sonic fandom. Only people who kept up with the comics month to month had any real reason to have an opinion on the guy, which means we're talking about merely thousands of fans as opposed to millions.
Within that group, he had some haters. You had the people who were mad about story changes made during his run, particularly things like ancillary characters getting killed off (although over the years we've learned that most of those were editorial mandates from Mike Pellerito). You had the people mad that Ian didn't push their favorite ship, with feuding SonAmy and Sonally fans claiming that he was CLEARLY biased towards one or the other. You had the people who just really, really liked one of the previous writers way more - usually Penders, as hard as that may be to believe today. That sort of thing. Pretty normal comic fandom type stuff. Again, it comes with the territory.
Unfortunately, many of those haters only got worse over time, morphing into reactionaries who constantly try to incite Comicsgate type culture war bullshit.
There are people still mad at Ian for making Sally bi and pairing her with Nicole instead of Sonic in the later Archie comics. There have been elaborate MS Paint red string conspiracy boards explaining how people like Ian and Jon Gray have apparently been destroying the franchise from the inside for years by Making Sonic Woke. (Jon gets dragged into this because people are still mad about him drawing The Slap 20 years later. Yes, really!!) There was an unhinged change.org petition trying to get Ian fired, specifically from people who were mad that the Freedom Fighters aren't in the IDW comics. There was even a very sad little fan campaign from these people trying to get Sega to move the Sonic comic license away from IDW and over to Udon, because they thought Udon would bring Sally and Bunnie back and also make them sexy again. There's a lot of this.
(Unfortunately, Penders has also exacerbated this by gossiping about Ian on Twitter and giving these fans ammo, but that's a whole 'nother discussion.)
The thing is, for years, people who only played the games or watched the cartoons had no reason to pay attention to any of this. Now, though, Ian isn't just writing for some weird spinoff comics that only the super nerds read. Now he's writing comics that are canon to the games, and ALSO some of the games themselves, and ALSO consulting on other tie-in media like Sonic Prime, and ALSO writing the official Sonic encyclopedia, and ALSO serving as part of the new Sonic Lore Team at Sega. And on top of all this, he's got an increasingly popular podcast where he fields questions about his work on all of these things, which serves as one of the fandom's main windows into creative decisions being made behind the scenes.
As a fan of Ian's work, it's been really cool to see him rise in prominence. But the dark side of this is that his obsessive haters from the Archie days now have WAY more of a potential audience of their own. Now, every Sonic fan has to have an opinion on Ian. What this frequently means is that you'll have the Comicsgate types taking things Ian writes or says out of context, attempting to get more of the general fandom to yell at the guy.
Unfortunately, there are a wide variety of Sonic fans who take the bait:
You've got hardcore fans who disliked basically any recent piece of Sonic media and are looking for someone to blame.
You've got the people who are concerned about the sanctity of Sonic's canon, who shoot the messenger any time Ian mentions a new retcon from Sonic Team on the podcast - or any time he even mentions the THOUGHT of changing anything about the canon, as we saw recently with the Sol Dimension nonsense.
You've got people who romanticize some sort of mythical artistic vision that Sega of Japan supposedly has (or had) for the franchise. To many of these fans, American contributors like Ian just don't "get" the heart of the series and are trying to turn Sonic into something different. (This "heart of the series" tends to be some mix of Japanese instruction manual lore, the cinematics from Sonic CD, the OVA, and/or the games written by Shiro Maekawa, depending on what Sonic media the fan in question grew up with.)
You've got fans of specific characters or ships who pin the blame for how their faves are depicted entirely on Ian - most vocally fans of Shadow, even though the root problem is that Sonic Team hasn't known what to do with Shadow since 2006. At best this stops at regular old criticism, but at its worst this devolves into claims that Ian has an agenda against certain characters.
You've got fans annoyed by a perceived over-emphasis on comic-original characters in the IDW comics, ignoring the obvious facts that these characters exist because the game cast is so tightly controlled by Sega, and also, you know, that people just like the IDW characters and want more stories about them.
You've got a LOT of discourse over IDW's Sonic being a hero who tries to give his enemies second chances, as if half of Sonic's closest friends aren't already former villains and rivals. Honestly this is very transparently just reheated Steven Universe discourse lmao
You'll also see people who just think they could do Ian's job better. They can't believe that THIS GUY is the American fan working on all these Sonic projects, when clearly THEY understand the characters and lore and themes SO much better than this charlatan.
All it takes is for someone in one of these categories to be unhappy about some recent piece of Sonic media, and for them to come across an out of context quote or comic panel that rubs them the wrong way, and suddenly the leftist Zoomer Sonic fans will join the latest dogpile on Ian alongside the reactionary Comicsgate types who are mad at him for Making Sonic Woke.
In general, when fandoms get upset, they tend to want a scapegoat. A person or two to point a finger at and go "THAT's who ruined the thing I love!" This tends to be based less on reality and more on which contributors are the most visible online. You'll sometimes see teenage and adult fans of children's cartoons single out a storyboarder who's particularly vocal on Twitter, blame them for every story decision they don't like, and harass them off the platform out of a sense of retribution for their favorite ship or whatever. Failing that, fans might choose to blame every nitpick, down to individual lines of dialogue and frames of animation, on a showrunner, just because that's the name they associate with the show. And unfortunately, when it comes to Sonic, Ian is now arguably the most prolific and outspoken contributor on the English speaking internet, and therefore a common scapegoat.
Some of the things I've seen Ian blamed for are truly wild. A lot of people have claimed for YEARS that he's just lying about the existence of creative guidelines and restrictions from Sega - or, as fans call them, The Mandates - even though they're just an inherent aspect of working on a licensed property. Others claim that The Mandates are real, but somehow Ian's fault. A vocal minority of fans have convinced themselves that Ian is the sole reason the Freedom Fighters don't exist in the IDW comics, even though Ian says he's been pushing to bring them back since day one.
Sometimes you'll see people say he ruined shit he didn't even work on. A few weeks ago on Twitter I saw someone claim that Ian had written a rejected script for Sonic Forces in which Tails died. I could not find a source for this for the life of me. As far as I can tell, the rumor seems to have been born from an alleged leaked script for Forces with margin notes from Aaron Webber that criticized the way Tails was written, and also an old tweet where Aaron joked that Tails would die in an upcoming episode of Sonic Mania Adventures. These merged into "Aaron Webber criticized a draft of the Forces script in which Tails died." How'd Ian get dragged into this? Who fucking knows!
It's all just a big game of telephone. All it takes is some asshole to make something up about Ian on Twitter or YouTube or a DeviantArt journal or some forum, and at least a couple people will believe it, and then it gets repeated as fact. Again, this used to be contained by the niche nature of the Archie Sonic fandom, but now there are WAY more people who are receptive to this shit.
It's just sad to me that Ian tries to be so open and honest about his work, to try to explain the rationale for certain things, to keep fans looped in on the direction the franchise is headed, and this just gives the Flynnspiracy types more quotes to take out of context and try to paint him as the devil. If it sounds like I'm being overly defensive and dismissing his critics, man... some of the things I've seen people say directly to him are just unbelievable. People will send paragraphs-long angry screeds in to his podcast that completely tear him apart, and he has to sit there and be like "Well, that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it." People literally pay for special guest interview episodes where they just rapid fire complaints about his writing at him directly to his face. I don't know how he does it. I would snap.
All of this over Sonic the fucking Hedgehog of all things.
I don't know how to wrap this up. Engaging with fandoms online is very tiring, which is why I tend not to do it. Things like this are too common. I guess, just... remember that making art collaboratively is a complicated thing. The people involved are generally trying their best given the circumstances, but they're only human. They make mistakes. But please treat them like humans. Criticism and dogpiling are not the same thing.

Do you have any opinion about this post? It proposes that a key element of Shadow's characterization is loyalty, and the reason portrayals like SA2, '06, TMOSTH and Prime are beloved is because Shadow is loyal to something (I would add Forces as well), while others like Boom and IDW fall flat because he's only in for himself.
(some of the tags, of course, are all "sega take notes, everyone gets it but you", which is funny for multiple reasons)
I want to agree with it more than I do. The way it's worded makes it difficult for me to be fully persuaded, because it seems to be missing something.
I feel like the post is a bit over reductive. It's already an exercise in futility to try to boil Shadow down to one or two traits because he contains multitudes, nuances, and subtleties; it'd be like distilling Eggman down to "evil scientist" and then ignoring all the ways in which his manchild behavior molds his character archetype.
The others have limits on their loyalty. Sonic will help you out, but he’s not gonna kill a man for you. Shadow will. He doesn’t have that limit. If you are Shadow’s friend and you need him to kill for you, he will do it. Period.
Idk maybe it's just me but something about this style of analysis rubs me the wrong way. When people make declarative, emotionally-loaded statements about the characters that Sound Good on paper but don't hold up to close scrutiny. If you're going to assert something this lofty, you need to provide concrete examples. When did Shadow kill for a friend in the games? When did he express the willingness? Can you give me an example?

While I agree with the overarching idea that loyalty can be an important part of his character, if we're talking post-ARK raid Shadow... You kind of have to be honest about the brand of loyalty he possesses, because his loyalty looks very different from Amy's or Tails'. It's a specific, hardwon type of loyalty. It's begrudging. It's that "Pssh, what? I don't care. Feelings are for wussies" kind of loyalty, if anything.
Like, it took Rouge dragging his unconscious ass home, a three-day-long fever dream, and her twisting his arm just to get her to begrudgingly call her "ally." You know what I mean?
On the other hand, I disagree with the notion that an overt lack of loyalty inherently makes him unrecognizable, since self-determination is an arguably equally prominent part of his character. In ShTH, you're just as free to ignore the wishes of your partner characters and go your own way. Cue the Fleetwood Mac.
Framing it as though loyalty is the linchpin on which his character rests risks defining Shadow solely through his relationships with others. Note that I'm not necessarily saying his relationships aren't important, just that they're not the most important.
Agency and the right to determine his own destiny are vital parts of his character as well. He didn't just tell Rouge "And I will fulfill my promise to Maria; that's the only thing that matters to me now" in SA2. He first told her "Even if my memories aren't real, it's still me, Shadow."
...I'm not sure why OP decided to include Archie and X in their analysis, considering Archie and X are dead and have no bearing on Game!Shadow's character.
Not sure what's meant by Shadow being "loyal" to Amy in MoSTH, either; I don't really have context for that since I didn't play it. If I had to guess, however, methinks OP may be mistaking Shadow doing something kind for Amy for friendship or loyalty towards Amy. You can do kind things for others without necessarily being "ride or die" for them.
This is where the post really loses me. Shadow's backstory doesn't need to be expanded upon at this point in the series; they've already dedicated at least three games and a handful of adaptations to his tragic backstory. We don't need to keep returning to the same well again and again. Surely we can do better than to navel-gaze. And the reasons why "he's like this" ought to be clear to anyone who's played the games, since they're fairly self-evident.
"But what about pre-raid Shadow?" I hear someone inevitably ask. Well, yes, Shadow displays obvious loyalty toward Maria, Gerald, and the ARK as a whole, but certain ShTH endings notwithstanding, it's not a blind sacrificial devotion. Regardless of his loyalty, he exercises the agency not to act like a mindless weapon in the hands of his creator. He possesses reason and more importantly, uses it. He still has enough presence of mind to seek to undo "all the evil the Professor has created" in SA2.
Even before the trauma of the raid and Gerald's programming went and deeply mucked up his sense of self, he was preoccupied with notions of self and identity, for understandable reasons. He wasn't purely a lapdog for Maria or the researchers. I feel like swinging the pendulum in the polar opposite direction and saying "Shadow is defined chiefly via his dedication to others" because it swung too far into "Shadow is a hyper-macho jerk" territory isn't a balanced stance to take.
Like this post is arguing from a Watsonian perspective, as though IDW!Shadow's jerkassness indicates some sort of internal selfishness, when the Doylist "Shadow was just written like shit in the book" will suffice.
Shadow has a character outside of his relationships to others, just as Sonic and Eggman do. He's quiet, introspective, and in all honesty, he comes out with some hard-hitting lines sometimes. "This is the final voice of the last war machine," anyone?

In Cosmic Discoveries, after SS!Amy got OMT!Tails cured of the Chimera Virus, they were walking through one of the tranquil areas with OMT!Cream following.
OMT!Tails: This place really is something. With LM off my back for now, I have plenty more time to take it all in again.
SS!Amy: Well, our efforts definitely helped in stopping one of those so-called "canon events" from happening. You've already been through a lot as is, and we couldn't risk you getting worse from it.
OMT!Tails: So, how have you found it here so far, Cream?
OMT!Cream: It's been amazing! I never knew how many other iterations of me and our friends were in the multiverse. I already made friends with multiple mes!
OMT!Tails: You'd be more and more surprised every day, of course!
SS!Amy: What's the bond between you and your Cream like, Tails?
OMT!Tails: Well, compared to the intended norm, me and Cream are actually siblings. I took her in after her mom lost her life to OMT, and we had been living with my Knuckles and Amy.
SS!Amy: I'm really happy to see that you guys have a universe that strays away from all the norms, Tails.
OMT!Tails: Hehe! Thanks, Amy!
They continued along the area to where Skye and Melody were.
Melody: Sure kept us waiting, alternate dad.
OMT!Tails: Heh, sorry, Melody.
Skye: The others are just up ahead from here! We'll follow behind.
They headed forward.
OMT!Tails: Hey, guys!
OMT!Mina: Tails!
The two shared a hug together.
OMT!Mina: I'm so sorry about before, Tails. I understand if you-.

Mini Sonic: Great work, Tails!
Mr. NM passed him a cheeseburger.

Nitro: We just met the kids you brought over, by the way.
OMT!Tails: Yeah. I met them on my way back.
Antho: So I heard you met my Tails earlier. What got you two on the move?
Melody: Well, we got forced out of our universe and can't get back in. We were stranded until this Tails found us.
Skye: Yeah, that's right...
Blitz!Tails: As it happens, me and mini-me were the first to come across the little guy on our travels, and he stuck with me whilst Mr. Red-Eyes was chasing Tails around different universes.
Melody: And he found me and rescued me from that Eggman lair full of robot doppelgangers!
OMT!Tails: Believe it or not, I ended up coming across the PRIME universe along the way!
The group were surprised and amazed.
Antho: You met the ORIGINAL Sonic?!
Ex-Prince Brian: That's awesome!
CR!Sonic: Guess that's one more thing you can tick off your bucket list, kid!
OMT!Tails: Hehe, thanks!
SS!Amy: So, while we're taking a breather, you mind us having a chat, Tails?
OMT!Tails: Not at all.
The two headed off while OMT!Cream stuck with the Blur Gang and their allies. They came to a stop at another point of the sector as Nine watched with a soft smile.
SS!Amy: So, were you able to make up your mind about the whole Quill Society thing? There's still no pressure, of course. It's up to you.
OMT!Tails: Yeah. Well, I had been thinking about it a lot. I mean, it's a really amazing community space, though there is still my world to help protect and my friends to be around, so I can't imagine it being full-time.
SS!Amy: Heh, it doesn't have to be full-time, Tails. I mean, you saw everyone here from the Blur Gang yesterday, and it was in the aftermath of a school day, too!
OMT!Tails: Heh, you're right. A part-time rotation would be great for me, of course, so long as it's alright with Knuckles, Amy and my main teacher, of course.
SS!Amy: I'm sure they'd be really supportive of you taking that first step forward to stringing out further yourself.
OMT!Tails: Well, I mean, I could never have gotten this far without the support of people like you, and I couldn't be more grateful. If I do get a part-time rotation and it's on Friday to Sunday, I'm definitely gonna aim to work alongside guys like you and Pana more!
SS!Amy: Hehe, sweet!
OMT!Tails: Hey... I just wanted to say... thanks for sticking by my side through all of this, Amy. I know it's been really tough having to move out of the universe you once knew, but your caring nature has never once been broken.
SS!Amy: You're welcome. Anything to help out a buddy!
They smiled to one another.
Nine: How's the conversation coming along?
SS!Amy squeaked in surprise, blushing bright-red in embarrassment.
OMT!Tails: Oh! Hey, Nine! I didn't realise you followed us.
Nine: Heh, yeah. I've got you to thank as well, Tails. You coming into my life changed it for the better in SO many ways. For the first time, I could make amends with those I had hurt, and that whole multiverse conundrum meant I could finally co-exist with you guys. I mean, seeing this whole Quill Society made me see that, no matter what dimension, anyone can string out from being a wingman and be their own boss.
OMT!Tails: I'm glad to have helped, Nine. You've been an amazing friend throughout our journeys together.
Nine: And you've been just as amazing, if not more so!
The three shared a laugh between each other.
Nine: Well, EV said he prepared your dorm room. Why don't we go and take a look?
OMT!Cream: Oh! Wait up!
OMT!Cream arrived, with a familiar Chao with her.
OMT!Tails: Heh! You got your own Chao companion!
OMT!Cream: Yeah! After seeing all my other counterparts, I decided to name him Cheese in their honour!
OMT!Cheese: Chao chao~!
OMT!Tails: Aww! He looks so cute!
Nine: Heh! Well, let's go, you guys!
They headed off. Over with Blitz!Milla and Skye, meanwhile, they were tending to some flowers in the Chao Garden together.
Skye: So, what's gonna happen if our dimension's... you know?
Blitz!Milla: Well, I really don't want to leave either you or Melody orphaned, Skye, so if you'd like, you two can stay at our dimension under our care!
Skye: You'd... actually take us in? Like second parents?
Blitz!Milla: Of course! You both deserve a happy life to grow in.
Skye: Heh, thanks, Miss Milla.
He gently hugged her as she smiled. As he did so, Smol Devy came from behind and hugged Skye too.
Smol Devy: New fwiend!
Skye: Hehe, aww!
Blitz!Milla: Hehe! You and Devy are welcome at my dimension whenever, too!

EV!Sonic: So, what was LM's state last you saw him chasing after Tails?
Blitz!Tails: He really didn't look stable whatsoever. I mean, he was still the big grouch the Society now knows him as, but... he seemed more insane when I knocked him into Dimension NEX-2023's further bounds. As if he really isn't being him anymore.
EV!Sonic: This is concerning. Once you get the chance, I recommend investigating his dimension with the Blur Gang to figure out what's amiss.
Blitz!Tails: I'll do my best out there.
EV!Sonic: I'm sure you will, buddy!
MV!Tails: I'll go with 'em. If he's planning something especially nasty, I'm gonna make good on my promise from before.
EV!Sonic: Yeah, good call.
Blitz!Tails: Alright. Let's go!

I'm watching Sonic prime because you can't give me multiverse and unlikely allies and think I won't watch it.
But this is the first piece of Sonic media I've ever consumed (sonic underground doesn't count cause I remember nothing of it, and neither do the films) so. Live blog lmao.

Mini Fanfic #1159: The Arrival of Team Dark Pt. 1 (and Knuckles) (Sonic X SSBU)
1:03 p.m. Outside of the NDC's Airport........
Rouge: (Walks Out of the Rouge Carrying her Purse While Inhaling and Then Exhaling a Bit of the City Air) New Donky City. At last, we finally meet~
Shadow: (Walks Out of the Airport While Carrying a Duffle Bag) It looks bigger than I pictured it being.
Omega: (Walks Out of the Airport Carrying Two Sets of Packing Bags in his Mechanical Hands) The land area of the city is approximately 469 square miles, including 304 square miles of land and 165 square miles of water.
Knuckles: (Walks Out of the Airport Carrying a Mini Book Guide) Yeah, and apparently, it was named after DK's grandfather who originally went with that name during his prime time. (Shows the Trio a Picture of the Original Donkey Kong Angrily Throwing a Barrel with a Blonde Woman Standing Slightly Behind Him Horrified)
Rouge: (Forms a Bit of a Teasing Smirk on her Face) Well, look at you taking the time to learn new things!~ Enjoying your new book of yours, hon?
Knuckles: (Shrugs) It's average. But the sooner I get over that lady and her bratty kid, the better.
Flashback on the Plane
Kid: (Kicking the Back of Knuckles' Seat While Screaming) GIMME CANDY! GIMME CANDY! GIMME CANDY! GIMME CANDY! I. WANT. CANDYYYYYYYYY-
Knuckles: (Quickly Looks Back at the Kid with a Very Vicious Glare on his Face) ZIP IT, TWERP!
The rude child finally ceases his yelling and kicking immediately....Only for his eyes to water not too long before he starts letting out even louder cry, mich to the echidna's continuous discomfort.
Knuckles: (Groans While Moving his Head Back to his Seat) Swear, I can't have ANYTHING he- ('WACK') AGH! (Suddenly Felt Something Hit Him on the Top of his Head Before Turning Back Around) What the- (Gets Repeatedly Hit in the Head with a Purse by the Kid's Mother)
Mother: You. Do not. Get. To. Yell. At. My. Own. Child. In this. Plane. Do you. Understand. ME!? HUH!?

Knuckles: If knew a plane ride would be this irritating, I would've glide here myself.
Shadow: (Rolls his Eyesa Bit) Assuming you would have any I where to go....
Knuckles: (Scoffs While Crossing his Arms) Please. I would've havd plenty ideas no problem. All I have to do is use that GPS thing on my phone and I'll be golden.
Shadow: (Raises an Eyebrow) Do you know how to use it?
Knuckles: Well.....No. Not yet. But little learning won't hurt and at least it'll be leagues better than having people keep bugging me on the plane.
Shadow: How about I get you noise canceling airpods for Christmas this year instead? It'll save me the trouble of thinking of getting you anything else.
Omega: I will give you custom winter theme ear muffs for substitutional back-up.
Knuckles: Really don't have to do that for me, you guys, but.....(Shrugs While Blushing a Bit) Thanks , I guess.
Rouge: D'aww~ (Playfully Pulling on Knuckles' Cheek) Is my Knuckie getting flustered already?~
Knuckles: (Gently Swats Rouge's Hand Off his Cheek) Shut up. I'm only like this cause I'm feeling hot right now.
Shadow: How could you be hot in the winter time?
Omega: The actual outdoor temperature is current 50.6 Degrees Ferin-
Knuckles: Okay, okay, I got it! Can we find something to so in this city already!?

Shadow: You two can go on ahead. Omega and I will look around and find the Smash Family a place for us to stay at for the rest of the vacation. Just try not spend too much in there.
Rouge: (Rolls her Eyes a Little) Whatever you say, dad.
Shadow: (Glares at Rouge) Quit calling me that!
Rouge: (Uses her Wings to Hover in the Air While Carrying Knuckles' Hand) Stop acting like a responsible old fart and maybe I'll reconsider. (Turns to her Boyfriend) Come, Knuckie. Times are wasting~
Knuckles: (Could Hardly Comprehend What's Going on Here) Hey, wait a minute-
Rouge quickly herself and Knuckles to a nearby mall, leaving the rest of the Team Dark members behind.
Shadow: (Crosses his Arms) ('Hmph') Not that old.....(Turns to Omega) Am I?

Rouge: (Happily Walks Away From the Cash Register in the Shoe Store) Man, I cannot tell you how long it's been since I've been in a perfect mall like this. I'm in love with city already~
Knuckles: (Scoffs While Following Behind Rouge While Carrying Multiple Shopping Bags) Yeah, I can tell. Didn't Shadow said not buy a lot of crap?
Rouge: Oh will you relax already, 'hun? I have still enough money to last us a lifetime. And besides, most of the stuff I brought so far are the gifts got for our peers this year, you included obviously.

Please tell me your thoughts on everything, I must know from you, the all-knowing mastermind.
Okay, so, first of all, sorry for the delay, because these past weeks have been crazy! Now that I'm able to just sit down and rethink on the latest news and rumors on the new game and everything else, I'll be giving you my general thoughts on that glorious day of teasers! Trust me, I was malfunctioning that night after watching the movie trailer, since my mind went 'Knuckles! Knuckles! Knuckles!' until like, 3 AM.
Let's get to the movie first. It's not a surprise how much I loved the references to Sonic Adventure and other few game bits that were gently sprinkled here and there. Despite my excitement over them, I honestly believe (and hope) the film will focus on its own story, instead of simply remaking some of the games in a 'medley' way. So far, we can guess the lore when it comes to Knuckles' Clan and the Master Emerald itself might be a little different from the canon, since we also have the whole owl ordeal in the ancient ruins and the involvement of Longclaw in this. Apparently, the echidnas were after Sonic's powers when he was a baby - but what if Longclaw was also important, given the details we saw in the traps Dr. Robotnik was avoiding? Could she be alive?
With that being said, I'm very curious to see Sonic and Tails' dynamic in the movie! It seems to be a fun one in the trailer, and I'm expecting some sibling bonding to happen as well. About the man of the hour, I can't say much or else I'll just go back into fangirling. Knuckles is the one I'm most excited to see in action! He's going to be taken seriously and that's what I'm here for, especially after reading that Idris Elba indeed took a liking and interest for his character to the point of caring to study his motivations. I can't wait for this film, which will be released just two days before my birthday! It's going to feel like an anticipated gift, that's for sure. Now let's get to the game!
I was exhilarated upon finding out the rumor about Sonic Frontiers being an open world game was indeed true. It's an old dream of mine, one I could only fulfill with that 'Sonic Adventure 3' mock-up game I had imagined and planned from start to finish, which was supposed to be an open world one too. I'm quite interested in the locations, which look beautiful so far, gameplay, characters and of course, new lore content! I have a few theories on it already (i.e. Infinite's return...), though I'd rather keep the details to myself for now. Knowing that Ian Flynn is writing this game was amazing as well, though I personally wish he doesn't keep things too simple and safe. If he's going to write Sonic rescuing his friends, I expect him to explore his dynamic with them individually, whether through cutscenes, idle in-game talk or maybe side quests.
Overall, Sonic Frontiers is my most anticipated game thus far. My hopes are mild when it comes to the plot itself, but whatever it is and how it's executed, it won't matter that much to me because well, it's an open world game! I can't wait to do absolutely nothing related to the priority missions and just, roam about the flower fields and other gorgeous scenery. Hopefully they have a fire/lava location included in one of those islands, because you know how much this sort of environment is my usual favorite in Sonic games!

Archie's wasted character
Who is Miles?
Miles Prower is the Anti equivalent of Tails, from Mobius Prime. He is afew years older, being 11 instead of 8 and much more mature. He still appears to possess Tails' youthful tenacity and desire for independence, but he has a violent rebellious attitude and shows no interest in holding himself to childish things, even though he's only 11 years old himself, hating the nickname "Tails" being an example.
Miles holds his younger counterpart in utter contempt for traits Miles sees as weaknesses, especially how Tails went down the path of Science and technology instead of his magical Chaos force heritage, implying that Miles went down a more mystical path instead of Science, but from what we see in the comic Miles is more in the political field, by that I mean he manipulates all the political aspects of Moebius.
His actions throughout the comic run make him out to be smart, picky, but also cold, calculating and always 5 steps ahead of his own team and Adversaries, this leading to Alicia making him the Suppression Squads leader behind the scenes, while she is the figurehead "ruler."

That's Anti-Tails, Who throughout this I'll be reffering to as "Miles." Now you may be thinking, "Why make a post on an extremely obscure and hardly used Archie character? Why not someone Like Tails, Shadow or a more popular Archie character?"
Well, it's because I believe that Miles had the potential to be one of Archie's most intresting original characters, I believe he could've easily held his own "Suppression Squad" comic run, but Archie Unfortunately really underused him and wasted his potential, but hey...
That's where us fans come in!

This post is All about Miles Canonical self, every canon fact I can find about him and his full story in his short run during Pre-Reboot Archie Sonic, and my own personal headcanons in the later post.
But...before I get into any the headcanons, I need to teach those who don't know him about him, I need to talk about his Canonical self..so, let's get into it. Headcanons will be in the follow up post.
Canonical Apprearnces.

First appearance
The first appearance of Anti-Tails was back when the character was just "Evil Tails" and it was of him joining the Anti Freedom fighters in an attempt to take over Mobius Prime, prior to the downfall of Eggman.
He and his evil allies pretended to be the good Mobius Prime versions, and struck knothole with acts of mayhem, vandalism and overall mischief, a common thing on moebius. The real Freedom Fighters soon returned to set things straight, but their initial attempts to defeat the Anti-Freedom Fighters failed as their Anti-Mobius selves knew their moves as well as they did. Sally Acorn came upon the solution: switching combat partners. When he faced Rotor, Evil Tails proved unable to overcome the larger and stronger Mobian. Defeated along with the other Anti-Freedom Fighters, he was sent back to Anti-Mobius, where they continued to cause mayhem despite the efforts of the kindly Dr. Ivo Kintobor (Anti-Robotnik) to stop them.
This was the last we saw Evil Tails for awhile, however we did see a cameo of him along with every other tails when they all came together and formed Titan Tails.
The Suppression Squad

Some time passed before his next appearance, and in that time "Anti-Mobius" went through changes in its name, now "Moebius." And all the characters changed alongside it.
Miles had assisted Boomer in stealing Dr Kintober's goal posts in order to allow the Suppression Squad to have access to inter-dimensional travel. Scourge obviously took this opportunity and went straight to Mobius Prime, along with a few other members of the SS, Miles being one of them, and they attempted an assult on the Freedom HQ, where we see Miles' and Tails face off, with Miles declaring to not be referrd to as Tails or Anti-Tails, but instead just "Miles".
He also indicated his disgust at Tails for having chosen a path of Science and study, despite having a strong connection to "Chaos force", aka magic. This has led to people believing Miles himself is a magic user.
When Metal Sonic attacked Scourge, believing him to be the real Sonic, Miles stayed back and observed instead of helping his king. Now, you may think that's betrayal, but in reality Miles didn't help because he did not wish to undermine Scourges strength, so instead he observed. Soon after Sonic came onto the scene he showed his willingness to help anyone, even his enimies, and this gave Miles an idea:
Let's team up with the freedom fighters to betray Scourge, that's the new plan.
Miles later met up with Sally, Bunnie, Antonie and Tails to offer an alliance, but didn't let Tails speak and showed his contempt to the original version, telling him, "Please don't talk, little boy, We're trying to have an intelligent conversation." Sally accepted the offer, knowing she needed all the help she could get for taking down Scourge.
Upon returning to Scourge, pretending to be running from the freedom fighters, Scourge asked for a summary on his mission, that being "bomb New Metropolis" but Miles ignored him however, instead reporting to Alicia (Anti-Sally) that his mission was a success. Immediately thereafter, Alicia told the Suppression Squad to, "Show our King just what we think of him", with Boomer and Patch clearly readying for battle
However, Miles was doubling up his betrayal, blasting both Sonic and Scourge back into Moebius for them to Duke it out there, with Boomer sealing the portal behind them. An ethical debate followed this, between Sally, Alicia and Miles, the trio being ordered to get the goal posts ready to be able to return the freedom fighters to Mobius after both groups agreed to make sure Scourge was defeated on Moebius by Sonic
Miles was as shocked as the rest of the group to find Scourge had defeated all of his opponents as Super Scourge. When the rest of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Suppression Squad were quickly defeated, Scourge turned his sights on Miles, identifying him as the mastermind behind the betrayal.
Miles, cowering in fear, denied his role in betraying Scourge, who was threatening to beat him for his betrayal. However, Miles was saved by Silver the Hedgehog and unlike the rest of his allies, wasn't even hurt. Following Scourge's defeat and Miles' attempt to recruit Buns Rabbot into the Suppression Squad, Miles spoke to Alicia about who would be their new leader. Alicia explained that while she may be the figurehead ruler, they both knew Miles held the real authority at this point, to which Miles grinned.
That was the last we see of Miles in the Archie comics, he unfortunately isn't in the post reboot because he's now owned by Ken Penders, so we'll never see him again. Below is all of his official designs, and after that is my final thoughts on the character.

My overview of Miles as a character.
I'm no Character analysist so I'll make this short and sweet, my review of Miles is that he's a Character with alot of potential, but he went wasted, not on purpose, but thanks to the lawsuit.
I believe that if that lawsuit never happened, and that arc was closed up nicely Anti-Tails would of became a far more realistic and grounded Character, and probably pretty popular too. Miles to me is a kid who was manipulated into a life of crime and now believes that's what is right, and I think that could of been an arc for him, mellowing out and becoming a true king for the people of Moebius. I also like how when Scourge goes Super and goes to Miles to confront him, he dosent stand up to him, he dosent become strong, but instead he cowers in fear, hes terrified and tries to lie, to me, that makes him feel more grounded, and I like that.
Personally I wish Miles was more popular, I wish he got more spotlight than he did and I wish his story got concluded, but with what we got, I think he's pretty good, and pretty interesting too! I've seen alot of ideas float around for this dude, all of them making sense in they're on way, and to be honest? His lack of story kinda helps make him more accessible.

Would I change him in any way?
Yeah, there's one key part of Miles (from what we got) that I think was wasted. Now, what is that? What would I change about a Character I've mostly praised? Well...
I wish he was magical. In the Archie comics Tails is actually strongly connected to the "Chaos Force", not as connected as Shadow, but still VERY connected, and guess what? Miles and Tails ARE biologically the same, same DNA, and in that bit of the comic, Miles calls Tails out on something he should have no idea about if he himself isn't connected to the same thing (or Moebius equivalent). To me at least this kind of implies Miles is magical too.
Basically, I'd give Miles' moveset a touch of magical abilities, connecting him to Moebius' "Anarchy force". I think it would help separate him abit more from Tails, while also connecting them, because whenever you have science and magic together...they clash.
But yea that's all I'd change in what we got, just hints of magic, some magic attacks here and there. I think it'd be pretty neat, and it'd have the science Vs magic aspect with him and Tails relationship.

Talking about an unreleased show because I don't have anything better to do
Apologies for the length and for referencing other media because I've only watched half of Sonic Boom series 1 in terms of Sonic cartoons.
We already know Sonic Prime ain't going to be canon hopping, which is disappointing but expected. It is a shame we're not getting Classic but tbh that's on Sega. Blaze should definitely appear though. She hasn't been in a show yet and she deserves to be in Prime, given the multiverse plot.
I think the idea of hopping through a bunch of random AUs is really interesting. It opens up for a lot in terms of creativity. Some concept art showed a tribal Amy, and a Pirate dimension. We have already seen pirate-themed outfits in Sonic Dash, which were extremely well-received by fans, so this one especially seems more likely to appear.
We also saw Kitsune Tails in some concept art but it's currently not known if that's an AU or his regular design for the show. More likely AU but it's a cool design regardless.
Sonic's new shoes are very cool. I'm assuming that's what he'll be using to dimension hop. They look sick whether that ends up being the case or not.
One of the concept arts showed a bunch of different Eggmen as well. I cannot find any of this art and SNN doesn't seem to have it for some reason but I remember there was like some preteen Eggman (Eggboy?) lol
Also I forgot they've called the multiverse 'The Shatterverse'? Surely multiverse is easier but Shatterverse sounds pretty cool I guess. Explains the logo.
I remember there were rumours about it being game canon after the press release. Idk whether that's been debunked or not but it's.. interesting. The show is being used to promote the IP, rather than act as a completely original sub-series like Boom was, so it's possible. Or it could just be that it uses/references events/places/stuff from the games. I believe it has been confirmed the locations will be the same. The show is projected to release next autumn and could well end up dropping within weeks of Frontiers (which has the same release time frame), so the two could maybe reference each other.
Overall I don't really mind if it is main canon but I'd prefer if it was its own thing.

Just from vibes I think this is gonna lean more towards what SatAM and X went for in terms of plot. So more action less comedy. I know X had some more comedic moments as well, idk about SatAM but I think it had moments like that as well? However the demographic of Prime is 6-11 iirc so I don't think it would go that dark. Like not how Clone Wars and Rebels are where you sit there the whole time wondering how this is rated PG and aimed at children. I know the Sonic franchise is very willing to go dark but they are also willing to do the complete opposite (AoStH/Boom for the most part). Something like Teen Titans, the first 4 seasons of Winx Club or the She-Ra reboot is probably the best approach. So more of a focus on plot, worldbuilding and character development but still with comedy moments and a plot easy enough to understand at a baseline level so the show will still appeal to kids.
That being said if they choose to go completely off the rails and give us a really dark Clone Wars-esque show thank you sega.
And of course, the Sonic has too many friends controversy. Tails will appear in any media in the franchise with a 99% gurantee, and Amy is going to be here as well as evidenced by concept art. Knux is a given as well since he's part of the core 4. Shadow and Metal are the next most recurring characters. I'm assuming Metal - or at least some version of him - will appear. There's like 500 fucking Eggmen there has to be Metal. Shadow doesn't show up as much as the core 4 either, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is in Prime, even if it's a smaller role like in Boom. Y'know, for the fanservice.
Everyone other than those 6 is much less likely to get in. However due to the main plot of the show it would be an easy opportunity to have a larger cast. Rouge is probably most likely to appear out of everyone else due to her affiliation with Shadow, or if not them, then Blaze due to the theme of the series.
I really hope the writers don't succumb to that idea of a smaller cast 'to try and please fans' because there's such a broad cast of characters there's so much room for good plot arcs and character development. X worked really well with a large cast and shows that the franchise doesn't need to cut down on characters to keep up the good reception.
Personally I would love to see the Babylon Rogues as unlikely as it is. They will not be in the show - if they are I will be shocked - but Starline, Whisper and Tangle. Please.
Silver too. Though since this is inter-dimensional travel and not time travel it may be harder to work him in.
And of course, shipping. Despite the seemingly high-stakes, high-intensity plot, they'll probably squeeze it in somewhere lol. And solid guarantee it'll be sonamy unless Blaze shows up in which case maybe sonaze.
I've recently regained my fondness for sonaze so I wouldn't mind seeing it. It's a nice change of pace as well.
Knuxouge is also likely if Rouge is in the show. I'm pretty neutral towards that one but they do have a good dynamic.
Watch this show say it releases next year and drop in the last week of December 2022. Yes I'm salty at Book of Boba Fett.
This is a dimension hopping show there will be the obligatory evil AU (But we're not allowed to talk about Scourge so it'll probably just be Sonic with a different palette or he won't even be there lmao)
We know Amy and Tails will have new VAs in this show. I wonder when they'll announce who the new actors are (probably closer to release). Sonic and Eggman are keeping the same VAs, and Shadow seems likely. Presumably the characters that were recast in TSR will keep those VAs. Dunno about the other guys (Rouge) though. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a few recasts.
Update 28/12/21: All the voice cast is staying, at least for the games. So ignore what I said about Ames being recast. As far as I am aware it has yet to be confirmed that Tails will not be recast in this show, as when the whole drama with the VAs was happening, Colleen said she would not voice him in Prime. Ofc netflix could end up getting their own cast for the show, but I don’t see why they’d need/want to.
I really don't see why there's such backlash against Flynn being consulted? It's not like he has that much influence. I know he is basically treated like the be-all and end-all of Sonic lore by a lot of people which is okay actually a bit annoying like there's plenty of other people who know a lot about lore, and some of his writing/characterisation is questionable (Charmy in Archie is one example). Overall I don't really mind. IDW is fine? I actually liked the zombot arc - I do generally like darker plots though - but the other arcs he's written range from fine → pretty good actually so I don't see why it's such a huge problem. Was his writing in Archie terrible?

We're getting Metroid Prime AND RoS remake. They also announced a new game on a franchise that has been dormant for almost as long as Pokemon exists (hi Bubsy). And now we're technically getting a SNES release. Among other things. What the hell is 2017 doing?
On some level it almost feels like the opposite of the past couple of years, to be honest with you. Like… like there seemed to be a big trend of rebooting or remaking old properties but without any of the actual charm or heart to them, particularly last year (with Breath of the Wild and Sonic Mania being the only ones that actually seemed to get it right), and then this year, it’s like… Zelda, the Metroids, Mania in two months, Mario Odyssey, Bubsy, Star Fox 2.
I certainly won’t complain, but it’s definitely interesting to see how the tide has completely turned and now we’re getting all of these probably-excellent games that really do the franchises justice. Though if I had to guess, I’d attribute it to the amount of new blood that seems to be taking the reins - BotW was handled by a bunch of new folks (and those new folks were the ones at the GDC, not Aonuma and the usuals), Mania’s of course Taxman and the others, Bubsy’s got those Giana Sisters folks (even though that still mostly bodes just-okay), so on and so forth. I wonder if we’ve gotten to the point where the people starting to reach the upper positions in these things are people who realize how well-received some of this stuff can be.

Into, Across and Beyond! Scripting: A Leader's Doubt
Sometime after More than One Universe and Funkinverse, Gwen Stacy and Gracie were both walking through a dark void, having been summoned there by EV!Sonic.
Gracie: So, what do ya think the blue hedgehog's wanting us for?
Gwen: Maybe to discuss the whole multiverse mumbo-jumbo stuff, I presume. I mean, we've both seen a lot of what it all has to offer, and fought some of the worst out there.
Gracie: True dat. I guess you and me might not be too different after all, huh?
Gwen: Yeah. That's one way to think about it.
They saw EV!Sonic up ahead, looking at many screens and floating panels, with the present (at the time) voyage of Sonic Prime and Shadow Prime in the middle.
Gwen: Is this your multiverse?
EV!Sonic: Yeah. Quite a crazy concept, isn't it? It's something a good handful of us are aware of and know plenty about, but at the same time... it's something we know frighteningly little of.
Gracie: And that screen closest to us?
EV!Sonic: That's the "Prime" versions of me and Shadow. Essentially the focal point from which our universes, including mine, stemmed from.
Gracie: The Earth-Prime Theory? We don't have that back in my stretch of the multiverse. Then again, likely because "Boyfriend Prime" is consistently disconnected from all of us.
Gwen: And if there was a Spider-Man Prime, like in those comics, I doubt he'd be linked to any of our endeavours. So what did you bring us over for?
EV!Sonic: Well, I... I heard about what happened with those "Societies" in your corners of the multiverse, and that must really suck.
Gwen: It does. I swore my own group against Miguel and his strike force after Miles was the eye-opener I sorely needed.
Gracie: Same thing with me and Salty.
EV!Sonic: Well, I'd been starting up my own Society a few months ago, but I've been aiming to avoid the flaws Miguel and Cam have been doing, as I witnessed before I tried to catch The X before. Thing is...
He sighed in worry, looking towards them with concern.
EV!Sonic: I'm worried that I could screw things up in the long-run, and I don't want to fall into the same trap those two did, or worse. I just want to be a good leader for all these guys and not hold them in one place for so long.
Gwen: I mean, you do have them working part-time, right?
EV!Sonic: Yeah. Three days a week each at maximum, with our busiest being Fridays and Saturdays. And I don't work full-time, either, since we've two leaders.
Gracie: Well, our advice? Have good therapists on standby, treat everyone with utmost respect, don't enforce canon events, and things should be smooth sailing!
Gwen: Mhm. And if members need the rights, they're more than welcome to shuffle away from their work if need be. I mean, you guys in your universes, from what I heard, aren't usually alone in your work, right?
EV!Sonic: Yeah, not usually. We always have friends available to help hold the fort for us if their base heroes are here or helping at other multiverse corners. I mainly called you two here for your input, since I know you both had it horribly in those Societies.
Gwen: Yeah... My father quitting the police force was proof enough that canon events can be averted.
Gracie: Yeah. I guess that served as motivation for Benjamin as well to side with us in stopping The X.
EV!Sonic: Thanks, girls. I really appreciate it.
Gwen: Anytime! Guess we got some good advice out of our experiences. Heh, even though we're not the absolute best at it.
EV!Sonic: Yeah. Since your faction managed to severely weaken The X before, Gracie, I think there might be a chance that my faction's able to apprehend him. At least, with some backup this time.
Gracie: Yeah, good call. Even with me, Salty, XML and Goldie couldn't beat The X all on our own when he was getting stronger. So I wish you guys the best of luck with it.
EV!Sonic: Thanks. I mean, he was based on us, so we know what to expect out of him. You two should head back to your dimensions shortly, though. Your places might need you.
Gwen: Yeah, that's a good call. Let's swing it out of here!
Gwen thwipped a pair of webs to make her leave.
Gracie: So, you hoping to be a better place for Benjamin to work part-time?
EV!Sonic: I am, yeah, considering his ties to someone within the SEGAVerse. Well, see you around, Gracie.
Gracie: See ya! Oh, erm, I didn't catch your name before.
EV!Sonic (with a soft smile): Sonic the Hedgehog. And I'm not the only one.
They shared a nod to each other with respect before Gracie left.
