#and from the classroom of toddlers which things were most likely to need more explanation

Your "explain it to a four-year-old" explanations are so good. I never manage to get as many questions in when I'm explaining.
Thank you! I think I learned how to explain things to kids from how my mom teaches toddlers too young to talk. She just keeps up a one sided conversation with them, like "You see that flower? That flower is red! I like the red flower. Do you see anything else in the room that is red? I see a red ball. Can you see the red ball? The red ball has a green square on it. Do you see anything else that is green?" Pausing after every question in case they want to answer, but not needing an answer to move on

summary: you are harry’s preschool teacher and one day james is late to picking his son up from school
**
It was hard to be around screaming toddlers, all day, every day. By the end of your long shifts, your head was blistered by the engraved sound of whining, moaning, and that smacking sound the children make with their lips.
But for the most part, you loved being around kids. Their tenderness brought so much joy to you and you were happy to have become an early childhood teacher. Your workplace was loving, with your fellow teachers continuously supporting you through everything. Even the kids were decently nice.
The age old stigma that kids were devil spawn seemed like the most foreign concept to as you coddled a near sleeping three year old, his warm body curled up to your side. Reading a children’s story to the kids, you felt so much adoration for the children around you, enough to make your cheeks rouge. All of them looked at you with doe eyes as you finished the last page.
“And the princess and the prince fell in love and lived happily ever after.” You closed the book with a soft clap. “The end.”
Looking around, the children beamed, flashing their pearly, toothy smiles towards you. In that moment, you felt at peace, almost content, knowing that you were bringing enjoyment to the kids surrounding you. Gently, you stroked the arm of the nearest child, Harry, as he slowly unraveled from your side.
“Miss?” Harry asked placidly, his tiny fingers down playing with the hem of your skirt. He looked up at you, fluttering his long eyelashes.
“Yes, Harry?” You responded, once you knew that he wasn’t going to speak without permission.
“Do you have a prince?”
At those words, you frowned, your smile disappearing from your face. Admittedly, you have been quite lonely for the past year. Focusing on work has been devastating for your social life. After your messy breakup with your previous partner, you felt like it was unnecessary to rush into another relationship. Quickly enough, those days turned into months, and eventually a year. Your dry spell was becoming quite unbearable.
As the winter months closed in, you wished for more comfort at night. The smoking fireplace could only fill your lonely apartment with so much warmth before you got desperate - needy - for something more. Some nights were spent with your fingers curled up into your cunt, tight from the months of neglect, desperately trying to churn some pleasure out of you, but, there was only so much your own fingers could do. They couldn’t go nearly as deep enough, or stretch you nearly as much as you so deeply desired. You were starting to become flustered just thinking about it.
“No.” Your reply was short, until you realised the kids around you would want a longer explanation. Sighing, you folded your hands in your lap, pursing your lips forward. “I’m not a princess of any sort. Even then, sometimes people don't have someone with them.”
“Just like my Daddy.” Harry babbled unprompted, dawdling away from you to join the midst of his pre-school friends. “He is all alone too.”
You knew Harry’s father, and just the thought of him made you curl your toes in delight. He was one of the most handsome men you had ever seen. Deep hazel eyes that light up when he laughs. Plump pink lips that frame his mischievous smile. Strong, muscular arms, complimenting his toned hands, that you can imagine wrapped around your neck...
Before you could even process the dubious insult thrown your way, you felt a sprinkling of fingers press lightly against your shoulders, snapping you out of your daze. Furrowing your eyebrows, you traveled your eyeline up, locking eyes with another teacher who worked there, Lily.
She looked absolutely wrecked. You knew she had been on the phone for most of the afternoon, for reasons you didn’t know, but you expected that you were going to be told now, as she beckoned you away from the kids.
“One moment.” You held up your finger, showing the kids an example of counting. As you walked away, you saw the kids out of the corner of your eye. They too had one finger in the air, repeating the same word - “One!” - over and over to each other. It was very cute.
“Roads have been closing because of the weather.” Lily started, her nimble fingers gesturing out of the frosted window panes. She was right; the roads were starting to look pretty bad. A thin layer of snow seemed to be shredding downwards, coating the town like powdered sugar. The sun stayed behind the clouds, not even daring to peek through, keeping the town in a cold flurry, and keeping the children inside. This was going to be a long shift.
“So, we’ll have to stay here longer tonight?” You asked, an exasperated sigh leaving your lips. You brought the pads of your index fingers up to the window pane, feeling the chill of the temperature seem into your skin. WIthout realising it, you traced a heart shape into the frost, your own heart sighing as you exhaled.
“Hopefully not.” Lily replied. “I’ve contacted all the parents and have told them to come pick up their kids as soon as possible. This storm seems to not be slowing down any time soon. So, potentially, we might be able to go home early, if the children all get picked up before the snow gets too thick. And, don’t bother coming in tomorrow. The snow’s gonna settle, meaning there will be road closure all across town.”
“Great.” A sarcastic laugh poured from your mouths as you turned back to the kids, who were still being occupied by the thought of having one finger in the air. “We should start getting them ready then.”
You and Lily worked diligently side by side, bundling the kids up in layers of soft clothing, keeping them secure from the storm. The kids joined in too, helping to clean the classroom, picking up litter off of the floor, and clearing off tables. As you sprayed down the surfaces of the tables and kitchen counters, you hummed a soft tune, getting into the rhythm of cleaning.
While you were occupied with cleaning, parents started arriving, greeting their kids with loving smiles and gentle touches. You melted as the kids ran excitedly into their parents arms, wrapping themselves around their mums and dads, wishing to not let go. In those sweet moments, you felt a fleeting pang of loneliness. You longed for your own child, and with that, a loyal husband. You breathed out a sigh, something that was becoming quite regular for you by now.
As more and more parents arrived, you saw the sun trickle behind the horizon. Soon, the night sky appeared, painting the sky in hues of indigo and cerulean. As much as you loved the night, you didn’t love the idea of being stuck here all night, and neither did Lily, who was looking even more restless than you.
Her ginger hair fell across her face, partially blocking her vision as she lethargically signed out the second to last kid. Deep, violet bags were forming under her eyes, her skin borderline white from her exhaustion. It was getting hard to look at.
“Why don’t you just go home?” Your offer made Lily perk her head up. “You look way too tired to even continue standing on two feet.”
“I couldn't do that to you.” Lily yawned, clasping her perfectly manicured hand over her mouth. “And besides, Harry hasn’t been picked up yet. I still have to do my job.”
You looked at her with pity in your eyes. You hadn’t seen her this exhausted in years, and you knew her anxiety was bubbling up as more and more snow fell onto the ground. “Please just go Lily. It’s only Harry; I can monitor him by myself. You need to get home before the snow gets heavier.” Before she could butt in, you continued. “Besides, Harry much prefers me over you.”
Lily laughed, closing you tightly into a friendly hug. “Thank you so much. I’ll get you back another day. Are you sure you’re all good closing up on your own?”
“Go home.” You waved her away dismissively. Lily bounced around and in only five minutes, she had collected herself, and had dashed out the door, leaving only you and Harry in the pre-school.
He was looking quite tired himself, which was understandable. By now, it was nearly eight o’clock at night, a time you knew was well past his bedtime. Harry had curled himself up on one of the naptime beds himself, his raven hair falling over his eyes. Staying by his side, you caressed his back, until he fell into a soft slumber.
You felt lonely again. Harry was asleep and there was nothing left for you to do until Harry’s father arrived to pick him up. You knew a few things about Harry’s father, from the fleeting conversations you had had over the time Harry had been at this school. You knew his name was James, and he looked like heaven. Everytime you glanced his way, you felt yourself grow wet. It probably was a problem, but your secret crush didn’t hurt anyone, so you kept it secret.
Long after it had become dark, you finally saw canary coloured headlights glint in the distance. It was a relatively nice car, something you’d expect a well paid ministry worker, like James, to drive. You watched attentively as the car parked slowly and surely. Then, the car door opened, and you got your first look of James for the day.
He definitely looked a little tired but there was something endearing about it. His fluffy brown hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had run his fingers through it greatly. His round glasses sat low on his nose bridge, with his natural eyes scanning the area. There, he locked eyes with you through the window, the same window you had drawn your pathetic heart on. Right then, James was positioned right in the middle of the heart, condensation like a halo.
Before you knew it, James had opened up the door into the school, realising a sigh of relief when he was hit by the warmth of the classroom. Dramatically, he closed the door behind him, leaning up against the frame, apologies falling from his lips like rain from the sky.
“I’m so sorry I was late. Traffic was crazy. Too many road closures.” James seemed frantic, but the solidarity of the preschool was definitely calming his mood down.
“There’s no need to apologise, Mr Potter. Harry is delightful to look after.”
“Please,” James held out his hand, “call me James.” You intertwined your fingers with hsi, shaking his hand ever so lightly, the same hand you had fantasised about. It was everything you dreamed of.
“I should drive Harry home now.” James broke the silence, his voice cutting through the tension, making you want to salivate. You didn’t like the idea of James driving in his state, especially since he looked so tired. If anything, he would need some caffeine in him before the journey.
You reached your hand up, stroking his right cheek with your left hand, concern filling your eyes. “Oh, please James, you look so tired. Let me make you a cup of tea before you journey back home. You look as though you need it.”
James chuckled. “Alright then, just one though. Besides, Harry seems to be having a lovely nap. Wouldn't want to disturbed him now, would we?”
You guided James into the back kitchen through a secret door. Here was your break room where you could have some peace and quiet away from the kids. It was one of your favourite places in the entire school, because even though you loved the kids, sometimes you just needed a place to help you unwind, and unwind you did. Countless times you had fallen asleep back here and had dreamed of James.
“We have Earl Grey. Is that okay?” You looked through your cupboards, eyes locking onto a small red box, tea bags flooding out of it. Personally, you weren’t a big fan of it, that's why there were still so many, but James didn’t seem to mind it.
“Please, sounds lovely, dear.”
You worked in silence, turning the kettle on to boil. Carefully, you dunked a tea bag into a mug, swirling it around in your fingers as you waited for the water to boil. The emptiness of volume was killing; you could’ve heard a pin drop. James was the one to speak up first.
“Harry really likes you. He talks about you often.”
“Oh really?” You chuckled in disbelief, facing away from James, fiddling with some lint of your sweater.
“Yes. Sometimes, he even calls you Mum. I’m happy that he has a mother figure like you to look after him.” You chuckled when hearing James’ words, which confused him. “Why are you laughing?”
“Oh, it’s nothing.” You said, reaching for the kettle. “He’s just not the only one to have called me Mommy before.”
James furrowed his brows, even more confused. “You have kids of your own?”
“Not quite.” You swung your head around, throwing James a cheeky grin. That’s when he understood what you meant. He gulped, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat, his pants seeming just a bit tighter than before. It was definitely hotter in the room.
“What normally happens when people call you that?” James asked, testing the waters. As you stood to move around, the chair scraped against the wooden floors, alerting you of his prowling presence.
When he was a mere inch away from you, you smirked once again. “Why don’t you kiss me and find out?” You weren’t sure where this rush of confidence was coming from but you both seemed to not want to slow down.
Consciously, James raised his hand to your cheek, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear. His soft hands lingered a little too long, before his eyes flickered downwards towards your lips. You knew what he wanted, but you never took him for the shy type. Something about this made you aroused. Needing relief desperately, you lunged forwards, connecting your lips to his.
It was everything you thought it would be. Hungry, passionate, skilled. Your lips melded perfectly together with his, as his lips sucked gently on your top lip. Yearning for something more, you moved your hands down to his ass, giving James an experimental squeeze. Just like how you wanted, he gasped, giving you the perfect entrance to insert your tongue into his ready mouth. He moaned, his lips vibrating against you.
“Show your Mommy how much you need her.” You pulled away, whispering those words at the shell of his ear. You could hear James whimper in front of you, positioning himself so he was straddling one of your thighs, as you were pushed up against the counter tops.
James’ fingers worked at the hem of your sweater. Eager to remove as many clothes as possible from you, he tugged at the edge, slow whimpers escaping his pretty mouth, as you tilted your head down to his neck, aching to leave soft love bites on his skin.
He was getting needier and more submissive by the minute, but to you, he was acting like a brat. “That’s not how we ask for something we want, is it baby? Use your words.”
“Please Mommy, may I take your sweater off?”
With a curt nod, you obliged, watching James’ eyes light up in fascination. Quickly, he pulled your sweater over your head, glad to see that your thin shir had stuck to the material of your sweater, leaving you in just a bra on top. His eyes were transfixed by the way your nipples were hard on your pert breasts, sticking out from your bra.
“Can I take your bra off please, Mommy?” James’ hands had already made their way around your torso, preparing for the inevitable.
“Yes love, good boy for asking.” You felt James grow harder against your thigh as you praised him, a thought that made you smirk in delight and what could be in store.
Like you were made of glass, James slipped the bra off of your shoulders, dragging it slowly off of your arms. You knew he wasn’t teasing on purpose, as it seemed that he was distracted by the sight of your tits, but you needed relief anyway, bucking your thigh up against his crotch as encouragement. “They’re all yours.”
Delighted, James leaned in, his whole mouth engulfing your nipple. With vigour, he bagan sucking, the pleasure of it going straight down into your core. You moaned loudly, something you learned that egged James on. Greedily, he started rubbing his hands down your side, eager to feel all of your skin. You didn’t mind though, as you were lost in your own moment.
“Good- good boy.” You stuttered out as James’ mouth left the centre of the nipple, beginning to suck small bruises into the side of your boob. Normally, you would punish him - well, anyone - for doing that without permission, but you didn’t care at that moment.
Content with his handiwork, James moved onto your next nipple, ready to give you the same amount of pleasure as last time. As he worked your nipple to a bright scarlet like the last one, you noticed a curious movement with his hips. Looking down, you saw James, rutting his hips into you, humping your thigh as if he was a bitch in heat. You moaned at the sight.
“You like that, huh? You like,” -  you jolted your thigh upwards - “Mommy’s thigh?”
“Mmm, so good.” James mumbled against your tit. You knew he was close to coming, but you weren’t quite done with him yet. Pulling him away from your body, you looked into his eyes to see a hurt expression, something you didn’t like seeing. Luckily, it wasn’t going to last long.
“If you can make Mommy cum from your tongue, then I’ll let you cum on my thigh, alright?” With an excited nod of his head, James immediately sunk to his knees, diving his head underneath your skirt. His fingers worked quickly, stretching the fabric of your panties to the side so he had the best access possible. When you heard a muffled “Oops” against your thigh, you could tell that your panties had snapped from James’ force, but you didn’t mind. He made up for it by being so damn skilled.
He dove in nearly straight away, his tongue licking straight up the lips of your cunt, lapping at it as if it was his first ever meal. The end of his tongue teased the entrance to your velvet walls, pressing in ever so slightly and pulling away, creating tension and frustration for you. But it felt so good.
“Feels so good, darling. Doing so good, my good boy. My good, good boy.” You knew he was spurred on by praise, so you gave him what he needed. Threading your fingers in his hair, you held him down slightly, taking the tiniest amount of control back.
When he began sucking at your clit, that's when you really felt the tide going out. It was ebbing at your senses, the only indication being your shaking body and the mewling whimpers coming from your mouth. This only encouraged James further to topple you over the edge.
Slowly, James brought his fingers up to your cunt, teasing your entrance with his finger. Then, he slipped it inside of you, feeling the way you clenched around his finger. You were so tight that James dreamed of how you would feel around his cock, these thoughts going straight to his straining dick in his pants. He needed relief, so he worked faster, inserting another finger and pumping faster.
You were so close by now. The combined stimulation of James’ lips suctioning at your clit and his fingers working in and out of you was too much. With one last hard suck, you felt your orgaasm wash over you like a tsunami. You could hardly hold yourself up, and that was evident by the way you toppled to your side. The only reason you didn’t hit the floor was because of James’ lightning fast reflexes, keeping you upright.
“Did I do good, Mommy?” James asked, his shiny eyes looking up at you with adoration, his lips glistening with your cum. You smiled sweetly down at him, stroking his cheek with your hand, until you pulled it back and gave him a harsh slap across his face.
“It was so good baby, but I thought I said only using your tongue?” James had the look of realisation on his face, but you kept going. “Naughty boys who don’t follow rules have to be punished, and I don't think you want to get put in the Naughty Corner, do you?”
James whimpered, but it sounded like he was enjoying the degradation. A smile spread across your face.
“Oh so you do? Good boy.”

i find you in sad songs and sad children (ch. 1)
Shouto goes missing when he is four years old. Touya becomes a pro hero.
Ten years later, there's an attack on the USJ, and Touya is hired to bodyguard class 1-A. He doesn't expect to find his brother while he's at it.

At first, Touya doesn't notice Shouto is missing.
It's not like Shouto is a very loud presence in the house, not like Natsuo or Dad or Touya himself. Shouto sticks to the shadows. He is every bit quiet and reserved a four year old should not be, but Touya tries not to think too hard about that, lest he start smoking in his rage.
So when he comes homes for the first time in a few days from one of his usual sneak outs, he doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary. It's just as silent as it always is, just as tense and suffocating. Sometimes in this house Touya has to struggle to breathe just because the air is so thick with his father's dumbassery.
He pads as silently as he can down the hall. His throat is dry from nights on the streets, and he needs water. But he stops short outside the kitchen when his ears catch on a too familiar sound - Fuyumi's muffled sobs.
"Yumi?" Touya asks quietly as he steps into the room, flinching at the state his twin is in. She's hunched over the kitchen table, head in her hands. The landline behind her is dangling from it's cable, nearly touching the floor, and she's still in her pajamas at three in the afternoon. She jolts when he enters, looking up at him with big, terrified eyes.
"Where the hell have you been? " She asks, just as quietly as him, because in this home children speak quietly.
Touya doesn't quite understand the question. It's been a long time since she asked him that, long since used to his periodic disappearances. "Around," he says, sitting down next to her but not touching her. "What's going on?"
"Mom," she starts, then breaks off into a choked sob, "Mom took Sho. They're gone. "
----------
Ten years later, Touya stands frozen in the middle of his living room.
The screen shows yesterday's attack on UA. His phone dangles in his limp hand. Nezu's words ring in his ears.
We need another low profile hero to stay with Class 1-A at all times. Will you do it?
Touya's mouth had opened, the word no had been poised on his tongue. But he'd caught Keigo's raised eyebrows, and his little brother's face had flashed in his mind, and somehow, inexplicably, he found himself saying yes.
Excellent! You start Monday.
"Holy shit," Touya says quietly. He closes his eyes, bringing one scarred hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. "I don't know how to deal with children."
He hears Keigo snort from the couch, and the channel change from the USJ Attack to some reality show. Touya fucking hates the shitty reality shows Keigo watches, but at least he doesn't have to hear about the USJ again. It's all he's heard about for the last twenty four hours.
"They're teenagers," Keigo says, "They can't be that hard."
----------
They were, in fact, that hard.
Within minutes, Touya finds himself bombarded by what he can only assume are toddlers disguised as teenagers - he reminds himself that he is not that much older than them, nor is he truthfully that much more mature. He also reminds himself of his own boyfriend, who is most likely also a toddler disguised as a pro hero.
His own former teacher, Aizawa, raises a hand as he activates his quirk. Even through the bandages, the man is terrifying. It's been a few years since Touya was on the recieving end of that red eyed glare, but he still has to fight the urge to shout Sorry, Sensei! and scramble back to his seat. The students react in much the same way, the ones that had been shouting excited questions at him now plopped back down in their seats. The pink skinned girl gives him an apologetic smile, and he nods back at her solemnly.
"Now," Aizawa says, "As I was saying. This is Hephaestus, an underground hero, and for extra security he will be joining us on our day to day. You can call him Todoroki-san-"
"Todoroki-san?!" The aforementioned very loud, very excited pink skinned girl shouts, half-standing from her seat, "Like, Endeavor Todoroki?!"
"No," Touya cuts in, lip curling, "Like Hephaestus Todoroki. No one else."
And he must say it a little too harshly, because silence ripples across the room for the first time since he stepped in. Except for the scratching of a pen on paper and quiet muttering - a green haired boy is frantically scribbling something in a notebook. Touya spares him a sideways glance. The blonde boy behind him smacks him upside the head and hisses Shut up!, and Touya figures the problem is dealt with for now.
"As Aizawa-Se - Aizawa said, I'll be accompanying you all from now on. Our goal is to keep a disaster like the USJ from happening again. Any questions?" He crosses his arms, sweeping his gaze across the room. Besides the purple haired boy in the back who seems half asleep, the green haired boy still scribbling in his notebook, and the blonde boy who is glaring at him so furiously Touya thinks he must have done something horrible to him in his past life, the class seems more than a little scared shitless. They stay eerily silent.
"I guess not. Well, then, I look forward to working with you all."
----------
Eighty percent of the time, chaperoning a gaggle of hero wannabes is not nearly as exciting or interesting as Touya expected it to be.
Instead, it's more comparable to having an office job. Touya used to imagine having an office job, just because he knew it would piss off his father, and he supposes now he basically has that. It's a lot of sitting in the back of the classroom while teachers drone on and on and on about things he either already knows or that he forgot as soon as he left school and has no interest in relearning. He spends a lot of time having hushed conversations with Shinsou and Tokoyami, who are both subdued and not-annoying enough that Touya can actually stand to be around them.
Shinsou's an interesting kid. He's the opposite of Touya, in that he was always told he could never be a hero. All Touya was ever told was that he was made to be one. But Shinsou is maybe one of the most heroic kids in the class, if you can get past his offstandish demeanor. Touya can see the heart of gold beneath the glares and eye bags.
He also ends up spending a lot of time analyzing the rest of the class. Like Iida Tenya - Touya swears he met him and his big brothers at all those Pro Hero balls his father dragged him to as a kid. Or Aoyama Yuuga and Midoriya Izuku, with their self destructive quirks that Touya can one hundred percent relate to. He takes special note of them even before Aizawa pulls him aside to specifically tell him about them. Maybe he can teach them a thing or too. He takes note of Bakugou Katsuki, too - with his destructive quirk and quick temper, he reminds Touya too much of what he himself was like at that age. Touya had gotten far too close to going down a very dangerous path because of his temper, and he doesn't want to watch Bakugou go down that same route.
The job isn't always boring, though. The other twenty percent of the time, Touya gets to deal with shenanigans.
Like one morning about a week into his job. For once, he gets to UA early, and he's not sure whether or not that's a good thing. Because Aizawa isn't here yet - nor is half the class - and there is a boy tied up in the middle of the room. Or rather, taped.
Touya stops in the doorway. He doesn't say much at first, instead just watching. A few slightly-singed desks have been shoved aside to leave a rough circle in the middle of the room, where a blonde boy (Touya thinks he recognizes him from the other hero class) is struggling on the floor and restrained with tape. A glance around the room reveals Bakugou has also been taped securely to the wall. Sero stands in between the two, panting and red faced. Midoriya is stood frozen and wide eyed next to Bakugou - a lock of his bangs is black and the rancid smell of burnt hair fills the room. The rest of the present students, who Touya knows as the remainder of the self proclaimed Bakusquad along with Shinsou, are spectating from the other side of the classroom. They all hold varying degrees of "What The Fuck" expressions.
Finally, Touya gives a long sigh. "What the hell? " And about ten different voices start shouting at him all at once.
He holds up a blue hand. "One at a time!" He snaps, and they go quiet. Pointing to the blonde boy, he asks. "Who is that?" Midoriya seems like the most unbiased source in all this, so Touya casts his gaze to him.
Midoriya squeaks at the attention. "Monoma Neito, sir," he says, "From 1-B. Sir."
Ah, one of those kids from the gaggle that had come to interrogate 1-A the other day. They'd all crowded around the door and, truly, been annoying - not that 1-A had reacted much better. Touya hums. "Why the tape? And drop the sir, kid."
"He and Kacchan got in a fight," Midoriya says, which prompts Bakugou to start screaming something so full of profanity that Touya can't keep up.
"Woah, okay, calm the fuck down," Touya says, "Why?"
From the other side of the room, Shinsou gives a tired sigh. "It's Monoma," he says, "And Bakugou. That's the explanation." Touya doesn't know Monoma very well, but he figures that tracks.
"Monoma started it, honestly," Midoriya elaborates. "He called Kacchan a villain, and made fun of some of our quirks..." He doesn't say who, which Touya figures is probably to save the kids' dignity. Touya can respect that, but he still notices the glances Midoriya sends Kaminari and Kirishima.
Touya shrugs. "Well, if that's the case, y'all better clean this place up before Aizawa gets here."
The room erupts into anarchy as the kids scramble to shove the desks back into place. Touya watches, leaning against the wall with crossed arms. A few more students enter and get roped into helping despite not even knowing what happened. Ashido leaves and comes back with a 1-B girl who drags Monoma off to his own class.
"The desks! " Kaminari wails, "They're burnt! "
There is a collective glare at Bakugou.
"So's my hair," Midoriya says very quietly, and Kirishima smacks Bakugou upside the head.
As Uraraka, who'd arrived in the midst of the chaos, works with Midoriya to coax his hair into some short of weird braid/ponytail to hide the burnt locks, Yaoyorozu makes the mistake of arriving to class. All eyes turn to her.
"Uhm," Yaoyorozu says, "Why are the desks burnt?"
"That's not important!" Kaminari says very quickly, "But can you make new ones? "
Yaoyorozu looks to Touya, who sighs. She sighs, too, which is very common in this classroom, then opens her lunchbox and downs three Capri-Suns. "I can try."
So, Touya won't lie. His job isn't the most exciting ever - but it's not boring. These kids are...
Alright, he'll admit it, these kids are growing on him. Like a fungus.
----------
"Admit it," Keigo says one night when he's laying on top of and suffocating Touya on the couch, "You love them." In the background, a woman in one of his reality shows throws a bottle at her sister in law.
"I don't, "  Touya snaps. Despite his harsh tone he runs his hands gently over Keigo's feathers. Keigo hums and tucks his face against his neck.
"You so do. You're a total softie and you love them. Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying," Touya yawns, "They're just... some stupid kids." The conversation lulls there as the two of them doze off, curled together on the couch.
The next day, Touya does not realize there is a feather in his hair when he comes into work. This is the first in a series of unfortunate events that lead to Touya's doom.
----------
In fact, Touya comes to work with feathers on his person on more than one occasion. Then there's a picture taken of underground hero Hephaestus walking with number three hero Hawks. Then Midnight sneaks a glance over Touya's shoulder in the teacher's lounge and spots "Bird Brain" with a black heart emoji next to it, and her and Mic's two brain cells clink together just enough to figure it out.
Which is how Touya ends up with the entire UA staff knowing he's dating Keigo. And is also how he ends up immediately vacating the teacher's lounge to eat with the students.
He seats himself at the self-titled Dekusquad's table with no preamble, because they seem the least likely to A) interrogate him or B) yell at him. Plus, Shinsou's there, and Shinsou's a pretty chill kid.
Still, when he sits down the kids go eerily silent for a moment before Iida gathers himself and says, "Hephaestus-san! Why are you eating with the students and not the teachers, sir? Has there been an emergency?" He swings his arms about in that sharp way he always does as he talks, and his classmates, long used to it, dodge effortlessly.
"The emergency is that your teachers are idiots," Touya says after a long sip of Coca-Cola, "And that I am not allowed to have alcohol on campus."
Iida splutters over that statement for a long time before he cuts off at a startled squeak from Midoriya. The boy looks wide eyed down at his phone, and Touya watches with dread as tears form. He doesn't even chide the boy for having his phone out at school.
"Is everything okay, Deku?" Uraraka asks softly, placing a gentle hand on his upper arm. He flinches away, hiding his phone screen against his chest.
"It's fine," Midoriya says, and Touya takes note of the sudden speed to his breath. "I just - I need to use the bathroom. I'll be right back." Shinsou glares after him as he rushes away. Then, he turns to Touya.
"You gonna talk to him?" Shinsou asks, as though that's the obvious solution.
Eloquently, Touya says, "What?"
"You are the responsible adult."
"Shit," Touya realizes, "You're right." And he rushes to follow after Midoriya.
He finds the kid sitting in the corner of an accessible stall, his grip on his phone white-knuckled and head tucked against his knees. Touya doesn't enter the stall, instead seating himself in the entrance. Midoriya turns his head a little and winces when he spots him, pushing himself closer to the wall. There are so many sirens going off in Touya's head.
"Talk to me, kid," Touya says, "I know I ain't the nicest, but I can try to help."
Midoriya turns his head back to his knees. Touya doesn't judge him - the kid cries a lot, but that doesn't mean he wants anyone to see, and Touya gets that. He doesn't answer for a long time. But Touya doesn't press. He's comforted his siblings enough to sort of understand how to properly talk to a distressed child.
Finally, Midoriya whispers, "Mom said Dad's coming home."
Touya goes very, very still. Then, he asks, "What's your dad like, kid?"
"He's a Pro Hero."
Touya closes his eyes. "Kid..." he starts, then pauses to consider. Fuck it, he thinks, Someone shoulda done this for us. Then he says, "Do you want my number?"
"Huh?" Midoriya asks incredulously, and Touya realizes that's not something you ask your student. He sighs.
" Don't text me for stupid shit," he says, holding out his hand for the phone. "Just - if you need help. I'll come."
Maybe Keigo was right about him going soft. Midoriya holds the phone out and Touya leans forward to take it, not commenting on the way the boy's hands tremble, and he plugs in his number. He's going to keep an eye on Midoriya from now on, that's for sure. And maybe have a word with Aizawa.
Touya watches his phone like a hawk for days after. The Sports Festival comes and goes, and he receives no messages. But on days he knows Midoriya's father is home (he works mostly in America, he discovers), he barely breathes when Midoriya isn't in his sight. He waits for a message, and isn't sure whether or not he ever wants it to come.
Then, when Hosu is on fire, the message comes.

Member: Jongdae (EXO)
Prompt: "We need to work on your small talk. Asking new people you meet how they would like to die is kinda creepy."

↳ part of my AU drabble game
At precisely 20:02 on a Tuesday evening, Kim Jongdae appeared from nowhere to land in a dilapidated alley, pressed between a Macy’s department store on one side and the graffitied Winchester building on the other. Of which, the latter structure happened to contain New Stratford location of your office.
Jongdae was lucky, in that you were the only one in the alleyway at that particular time. Nearly everyone who worked in the Circle left before 18:00, overly concerned by trains, traffic and the time of commute. You alone were trudging between the buildings, paying little attention to your surroundings when he appeared from thin air.
It is hard to say what, exactly, happened. One second, you were adjusting your air pods with one hand, holding a jacket overhead to block out the rain with the other, not looking at all – and then, Jongdae was there.
He slammed into your body, making you stumble.
“Run!” he blurted, staring at you wide-eyed. The rims of his were red; a stark, bloodied color. His knuckles were white, gripping what appeared to be a gun in his hand. It was like no gun you had ever seen, though. “Run – run!” he gasped, breathing hard. “Why aren’t you running?”
Glancing over your shoulder, you saw no one. “I’m sorry.” You returned to him. “Are you running from something and telling me to run, too? Or, are you the thing I should be running from?”
Petering out, Jongdae’s run slowed to a halt in several, quick strides. He stopped right before you, glancing up at the sky. Freezing in place, he stared. “The sky,” he muttered, blinking abruptly. “It… isn’t orange anymore.”
“I – yeah.” You, of course, were not looking at the sky. You were looking at him, the gun that he held and wondering if you were about to die in an ally. “Is it usually orange to you? Are you colorblind, or something?”
Maybe you were witnessing a miracle. Y/N Y/L/N, of questionable age, witnessed the medical marvel of returned sight at 20:02, Tuesday evening in the fair month of – fuck, was it May already?
Jongdae shook his head, as though to dislodge water from his ears. “I,” he exhaled, bewildered. Twisting around, he stared up the ally, then down it. When he returned to you, he slowly lowered his weapon. “Where am I?”
Shit. This guy was probably drunk, although – you leaned in and sniffed. He did not smell like alcohol. “Uh,” you blinked, hastily retreating. “In an ally outside of Macy’s? It’s over there,” you pointed. “Are you looking for the Nike store? Tourists usually are.”
Jongdae stared at you as though you had spoken indecipherable gibberish and, in a way, you had. “Nike?” He blinked. “As in, the goddess? She has a marketplace?”
This was when you realized he was not from your world. You meant that in the loosest way possible, since you did not yet suspect the truth of the matter. Jongdae, with his strange manner of speaking, odd gun and orange sky, was from another world entirely.
Well. He was from your world, but a different version of it. A parallel universe, existing side by side with your own.
At that time though, you did not imagine any of that. All you knew was that this seemingly crazy man had accosted you in an ally, spoke of ancient goddesses like fact and thought the sky was orange. The one explanation was that he was insane and yet, you saw sanity in his gaze. It is hard to explain. You, yourself, were having trouble deciphering.
“I’m late,” he exhaled, glaning around. “The Empire. They need to know – they must know. There’s been a breakthrough, at the Academy and…” He shook his head. “There isn’t time. Where is your closest transport?”
Awkwardly, you pointed him in the direction of New Stratford Train Station. When he kept on blabbering though, you led him a block in the right direction, but this was when Jongdae seemed to realize the horrible truth of the matter.
On the corner of Clark and Monroe, he turned in a slow, stumbled circle. His gaze moved slowly from the tiered buildings to yours. “Am I… still on Earth?”
Multiple responses ran through your mind to this question, most of them impertinent. Something to his gaze, his tone, though, made you stop. He truly seemed distressed, which made you want to help. Damn your weak spot for lost causes.
“Yes,” you said to him gently, unsure what response he expected. “We’re on Earth.”
Briefly, Jongdae’s grip on his gun tightened. Then, he relaxed and – reluctantly – slid this into his pocket. “Not my Earth, though,” he muttered, almost to himself.
He seemed stunned by this prospect, a bit woozy and perhaps that is why you took pity on him. “Hey,” you said, waiting until he looked your way. “Would you… do you need help?”
Jongdae looked up, sharp. “You would willfully help a stranger?”
There was a strange undercurrent to his words; one you did not yet understand. Still, you nodded. “I mean, I live by the golden rule, or whatever.”
Jongdae’s brow furrowed, tilting his head to one side. “Is that rule of trial by combat, or fire?”
Awkwardly, you choked on the breath you inhaled. “What?”
“If one of us breaks the oath,” Jongdae explained, as one might to a toddler. “Is the golden rule here to kill the other by combat, or fire?”
Staring, you began to wonder if you had entered the pages of a strange, feudal science-fiction novel. “I – neither,” you insisted, incredulous. “God, we need to work on your small talk. Asking those you just met how they would like to die is kind of creepy.”
The corner of his lip twitched. “If there is no blood consequence to your oath, then – how do you ensure it is kept?”
His question left you baffled. “I,” you paused. “I don’t know. We just kind of trust each other, I guess.”
Jongdae stared. An errant breeze from the lake ruffled his hair and you realized then that he was quite attractive, when he was not threatening you with a gun in the middle of an ally.
“Trust.” Jongdae said the word as most would say moist – a phrase generally agreed upon by society to be dubious, at best. Arching a brow, he added, “A risky business, that.”
“Well.” Oddly emboldened, you took a step closer. “Do you have any choice?”
His brows ticked higher. “It would seem not,” Jongdae exhaled. “I suppose that, in return for your help –”
“Y/N.”
“In return for your help, Y/N – of other Earth.” A humorous glint entered his gaze. “I, Jongdae, of the Eighteenth Dynasty of the name, born in the Twentieth Century after the defeat of the Pretender, Christ –”
“Wait, what?”
“–pledge to owe you one favor.”
You fell silent, staring at him. “A favor?”
Solemnly, Jongdae nodded. His jawline was sharp, like his gaze and you found you could not look away. For a moment, the voices of reason ran through your mind. You did not know him. He seemed fucking insane. He spoke of alternate worlds, people and theories which defied common sense – and yet.
Your entire life had been spent in classrooms, in universities, in office spaces and conference rooms. All your life, you had wondered what if there was more – and here, at last, was more.
Determinedly, you tilted your chin upwards. “Alright,” you exhaled, outstretching your hand.
Blinking in surprise, Jongdae grasped your hand in his.
The heat which traveled your spine made you gasp, but you did not pull away.
Jongdae seemed startled as well but still, he straightened to look you in the eyes. “Then,” he said, shifting his weight. “Let’s get started.”

My worst teacher ever!
Okay so I've had so many fucked up teachers (-_-) I lived in a rural area, so far off the beaten track, that if someone screwed up badly(but not enough to be fired) they got sent there, so we had a lot of jilted and surly twats, we also had a lot of teachers new fresh out of university and a few close to retiring or with disabilities but still wanting to teach, those ones were generally nice and pretty cool. Generally the rules were a bit more lax for the teachers since they had already messed up but were being given a second chance, and that lead to some great(but strict) teachers, since they were there as a punishment and they wanted to get out of there and back into their old jobs asap,(we had a lot of teacher turnover) but there was also a lot of shenanigans; teachers busted by students having sex in classrooms, teachers thieving, taking drugs, openly perving on highschool girls, etc...
But despite all of that in my whole school career(primary and secondary) there was only One instance where a teacher at our school actually got fired although they called it "Permanent Leave"... we did have a couple who had mental breakdowns and quit.. but thats different...
Anyway it was in my 10th year of school, he was an English teacher and he was one of those older middle age crisis types (cheesy gangsta wannabe, band t-shirts, shorts hanging low, baseball cap backwards, cheap rapper bling and he was obsessed with ponchos). He tried so hard to seem cool and hip.. but he was just so creepy.
And he barely lasted a year.
He was openly bias and judgemental in class, favoring the academically inclined/more wealthy kids and snubbing the kids who weren't at the top of the class/less wealthy(going so far as to kick them out of class. Then he'd do a complete 180 outside of class and try to be all best friends buddy buddy with everyone like he thought he was the most favourite teacher in the school. He really wasn't. (¤_¤)
I was one of his favorites (unfortunately..) I think its because I had a lot of smart/wealthier friends and he though I was really "smart". I was on the higher end of poor and yes I was kinda smart but I hung out and got along with a lot of people, it was a really small town and everyone knew each other since preschool so we all got along for the most part and we all hung out often.
I was also one of those quiet artsy types, I doodled in my note books to help remember the content of the lesson.. He latched onto that like a maggot on rancid meat. He would go through my school bag pulling out my art books and rummaging through my stuff! And would give me Word Art to colour in and draw on as homework! Hell I remember one incident where I threw my phone at him to get my art books off of him.. that he had grabbed from my bag during someone else's class!(we left them in a seperate area to the classroom)
Who the fuck does that!?
I had to get a fucking padlock for my school bag!
And the really sad(annoying) thing is, I actually enjoyed English class before he showed his nasty face. That year we were meant to be studying Shakespeare and Chaucer and all of the old English books which I've been reading since I was little and it was my year to shine! But he made me feel like a fucking toddler with his "colour in the pretty picture" (○u○)
That his classes generally consisted of watching movies/music videos and slacking off(not so great since we had really big important tests at the end of the year that decided our futures...) and him having hissyfits if anyone objected.. I spent half the time skipping his class and hiding out in the library.
Really didn't help that he had a real short fuse, trowing tantrums and screaming at anyone who questioned him..
I remember one big incident towards the end of year, I dont know what caused it since I wasn't part of the class, but I saw the ass end of it as I was walking past on my way to the library. He was having a massive tantrum screaming his head off, purple faced and throwing anything he could get his hands on. Including a chair that hit one of my bffs and knocking her down in the middle of class, seeing this I knock on the door, giving the excuse that bffs mum wanted her and was waiting at the main office(our parents were really close so one of us delivering messages like that was normal) I got her out of there and took her to the nurses office because the chair had cut her arm and reported what was happening to the main office(he didn't get the sack for that, but it definitely added fuel to the fire) when bffs mum was called in to pick up bff she stormed right over to the fucktard and tore him a new one(shes short but holy crap she's fucking scary) he steered clear of bff and her family(me included as extended family) after that.
So many kids were reporting him and trying to get him gone, but things really came to a head at the end of the year after the results for the HSC* came back. Thanks to Him everyone in his class failed the HSC, including graduate aged students who needed the HSC to get into university. Since about 2/3rd of the school failed the HSC the Board of Education sent someone to investigate what had happened.
It was a really big deal, kids were called in to be interviewed (those in his classes and some outside for confirmation) All of us were given an intensive 2 week course by another teacher and a second chance to sit our HSC (a very big deal! board of education never allows do-overs!), but in the end many of us barely scraped a pass and its affected our chances of getting into university and future career paths. Several in my year dropped out and others moved schools.
Thankfully it was the final nail in his coffin and he was gone for good, I moved after that year(for unrelated reasons) so I dont know how things went in the next years aftermath, but I hope the kids in the years to come never have to deal with something like that happening to them!
*Quick explanation of what the HSC is...HSC stands for High School Certificate. In the last 3 years of high school students take 3 HSC tests(that we call the HSCs) to prove we are ready to move onto the next year of study. There are 3 tests in the HSCs the students must pass to achieve the minimum standard and recieve our HSC– reading, writing and numeracy.
Each years HSC qualifies students for new opportunities:
Recieving the Year10 high school certificate means that you can go onto years 11 and 12 or drop out and go to TAFE(aka community college).
Recieving 11 & 12 qualifies for University entry although the qualifying courses change depending on how high you score in those tests.
So years 10, 11 and 12 are really full of studying and prep for those tests because they are so important to our futures.

Kids who enjoy reading? Imagine that...
Great little rant in the Boston Globe magazine about summer reading programs libraries have.
"In June, my 6-year-old son got very excited about our town’s summer reading program, in which kids who read for a certain number of hours vote for a movie that gets screened at the library. For several days, he reminded me we had to track the time we spent reading and check boxes off his chart so he could participate. But then he spent time with a California friend whose library’s summer reading program offers passes to Disneyland. A free movie suddenly seemed lame by comparison. He lost interest in the program and, for a while, in books, too.
Across the Commonwealth, public libraries encouraged schoolchildren to read this summer by offering prizes, often related to the big screen or sports, for those who met the minimum number of hours or books. In Arlington, we had the free movie. In Boston, if you read three books, you were entered into a raffle for Red Sox tickets. Maynard’s raffle was for a new bicycle.
There’s nothing wrong with movies, or sports, or amusement parks — or with programs aimed at spurring children to read. What’s wrong is the underlying message that books are a chore and that kids who endure them deserve payback.
Why, I wonder, are civic programs framed around this assumption? Is it because most kids don’t like books? Because adults don’t like them, either? Or because parents and educators and even doctors talk so much about The Importance of Reading that we have forgotten it once was (and still could be) a widely enjoyed activity?
Couldn’t agree more. But also: What else did you expect? The entire North American educational culture has been slowly but surely moving in the direction of making everything related to learning a chore for many long years now, with the result that kids grow up not valuing playing with their imaginations because that won’t be on the test. It’s been so long now that many of those young kids’ parents and teachers were raised that way. Kids are surrounded by people who think learning and reading is a hassle to get over with so we can get back to sucking screen.
Children start pre-school programs earlier and earlier; it’s not uncommon for two- or three-year-olds to begin their pre-K education in school-like settings where parents very much expect they will learn skills that will give them a leg up when the time comes to start junior kindergarten. Once there, little kids are swallowed up by an educational machine that makes them sit in rows and pay attention to what the teacher is saying. Oh sure, there’s play involved. But the playing is relentlessly didactic, because the adults involved worry about educational achievements above just about everything else.
I’m all for educational achievements. But they don’t come from programs designed to measure and track children on flowcharts designed by a committee of educationators. Real learning happens when children themselves want to learn, in settings where their natural curiosity hasn’t been dulled by overly didactic programs.
In plain English: If you stick your toddlers and young children in a classroom and make them drill (with a song! and a dance! or a screen!) until they can regurgitate something measurable, you will kill their natural curiosity and make them think that everything you want them to do is a chore.
I have three daughters whom I’ve been homeschooling since birth. They are now 10, “almost 9” and 7. If they went to school they’d be entering grades 6, 4 and 2. But if you heard them speak or read out loud, you’d think the eldest was half-way through high school already. Both parents are writers, and we both put a lot of emphasis on reading, writing, and oral expression. This is not to boast (well, OK, but not much), but to illustrate my point.
My kids don’t have to sit around learning things for much longer than 60 or 90 minutes a day, which we tend to break up in chunks of 20-30 minutes, in between which they are allowed to stretch or play or read. They don’t have goals to meet, as far as their educational achievement goes. I do, but they don’t know what the goals are. They just keep learning stuff until I send them off. They’ve never had to take a formal test in their lives, and I believe it’s one of the main reasons why they are still excited to learn things, especially if it involves story-telling. (Math and piano practice, not so much.)
When they are not made to sit down and listen (i.e. the bulk of their average day), they are left to play by themselves. We don’t tell them what to do, we let them figure out their own games. They also read a lot. For fun, I mean. They have books we assign to them (we loosely follow a classical education curriculum and their assigned reading books tend to be classics of literature), but they are free to pick anything they like for their free reading. They have library cards and they use them like little fiends.
Our local library branch has one of those summer reading clubs where the kids earn stickers and small toys every time they finish a book – and then they get entered into a draw for a free book. I never pressured my kids to join it, but they’re all enrolled. And they love nothing better than to rush there to tell Kelly, the friendly and incredibly patient custodian of the kids’ section, about the books they’ve read.
They don’t do it to get the toys and stickers, although they enjoy those. Nobody would read three novels just to get stickers. If baseball tickets and Disney passes aren’t enough to entice non-reading kids to get lost in a book for fun, stickers certainly won’t do it. But my kids really do enjoy the reading, precisely because to them it’s not a chore.
One important point: with very rare exceptions we do not insist that they finish a book that doesn’t interest them. Instead we ask them to explain why they don’t like it. The explanation does not have to convince us but it must be coherent and grammatically correct. Some books are terribly dull, and often it’s a matter of taste whether we like a style or not. Sometimes a person isn’t ready for a particular title, for no obvious reason, and they’ll like it a lot a year later. Heck, it took me three tries and a dozen years finally to enjoy Les Misérables, who am I to push Little Women on kids who aren’t, at the moment, digging it?
Fortunately, for parents of children who are not so keen on reading, there is a remedy, and it involves getting your kids immersed in stories. Here’s how you do it: If they are young (it helps a lot to start this when they’re babies), read stories out loud to them. Not just bedtime stories either. Real stories that involve character development, heroes slaying beasts and people succeeding despite long odds. When our kids were little we read all the Dr. Seuss books to them, over and over again. We eventually graduated to the Narnia Chronicles, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Swallows and Amazons, that sort of thing. It didn’t matter that the kids were too little to understand the story. The point was for them to get used to hearing stories. To fill their little heads with sounds, poetry, rhythm, and images. We didn’t shy away from stories that featured bad people and tragedies. Real life is full of those and little ones need to know this, provided the stories make moral sense and preferably end well, because nightmares are no fun.
Nowadays we still read out loud to them. We also let them listen to audiobooks until their ears fall off. They now insist on doing some of the reading we do themselves, which is something we encourage because it lets them practice speaking properly and also because it gives us a chance to spot problematic words and correct their pronunciation where needed. We let them watch movies (not educational TV programs; those are banned around here), and every now and then we’ll pick up a screenplay and act it out together. Macbeth is a favorite; you should see the delight they take in impersonating those witches.
The result of all this is that my kids love being immersed in stories. When they play freely they often re-enact movies they’ve watched, and they have their own parallel Harry Potter universe. Their imaginations are engaged and they eagerly seek out new stories.
It’s never too late to engage your children in good storytelling. But you have to do it with them. Kids have a very annoying habit of ignoring what we say and paying attention to what we do. If they never see us excited about a story, they’ll just think we’re trying to get rid of them when we send them to read. Watch movies together and discuss them – play with alternate endings, ask them how they’d want certain characters to behave instead, and see where their imagination takes them. Don’t expect too much at first. Treat imagination like a muscle; if your kids have already spent a few years in a school system that privileges measurable achievements over free play, they’ll need some practice. But the payoff is amazingly worthwhile.
Plus you’ll save loads of money on Disney passes.

How the Humble Analogy Can Give Your Writing More Punch
Analogies are an underused literary device capable of making your words more powerful, popular, and persuasive. In this post, you’ll learn all about them.
Give yourself credit.
You’re a solid writer with good ideas.
But… you feel like you’ve reached a plateau.
People like your writing, but they don’t love it.
They find your content useful, but not essential.
Even your best ideas never seem to catch fire.
And you can’t help wondering why.
Maybe you just have to be patient and wait for your audience to come around.
But then again, maybe it’s not that. Maybe your writing is missing something.
Because when you read the work of your favorite writers, their ideas are so clear, so vivid, so damn easy-to-understand that they light up your brain.
And while you hope your readers feel the same about your writing, you secretly suspect they don’t.
Here’s the difficult truth — you’re probably right. Your writing is missing something.
And it could well be this…
Analogies: The Writing “Power Tool” You’re Too Afraid to Use
Successful writers — whether they’re students acing papers or freelance writers getting paid big bucks to write for clients — have a myriad of tools in their toolbox.
Some of these are like hand tools, like a chisel. Others are like power tools, like an electric drill.
And here’s the thing about power tools. At first, they can be a little scary to use. (You may even have one or two in your garage you’re too afraid to unbox!)
You’re not sure how to hold them properly. You don’t understand what all the attachments do. Sometimes you don’t even know how to switch them on.
But in the right hands, boy, do they get results.
And one of the least used and least understood power tools for writers is the analogy.
Here’s the dictionary definition of analogy:
Coming from the Greek word ‘analogia’, an analogy is a figure of speech comparing one thing to another, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
Or, more informally:
When talking about Thing X, you also mention (seemingly unconnected) Thing Y because it has useful similarities.
Editor’s Note: Wondering what the difference is between an analogy and a metaphor? Though both are figures of speech, they’re not the same. As explained here:
While a metaphor uses words or phrases to represent an idea, an analogy uses narrative or comparisons to explain the idea.
Forrest Gump’s “life is like a box of chocolates” is an analogy. “Parting is such sweet sorrow” from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a metaphor.
We use analogies a ton on Smart Blogger. Here are just a few analogy examples:
Tweaking your blog’s topic is like tuning an old-fashioned radio
Staying in a job you hate is like being a fish that’s suffocating out of water
Publishing content over the holiday is like teaching a toddler to swim during a hurricane
Spreading ideas is like assembling an IKEA table
If you’re a regular reader, you probably remember many of these examples of analogies. That’s because striking images like these tend to stick in your mind.
But despite the power of a well-chosen analogy, many writers ignore them.
It’s almost as if they’re too intimidated to take this tool out of its box.
Which is a shame, because they really should.
Why Analogies Do Twice The Work in Half The Time
Analogies are powerful because they use established ideas to do the heavy lifting of introducing new ideas.
Consider the following two descriptions:
A four-legged mammal standing about four feet tall at the shoulder, having an elongated head, large ears and distinctive black and white markings.
A stripey horse.
We’re talking about a zebra here, right? But can you see how the second description is much more concise? It reuses everything we already know about horses to describe a zebra.
(For the record, a horse is not strictly an analogy for a zebra. However, the process of describing a zebra in relation to a horse is like using an analogy.)
Let’s look at three reasons analogies are so powerful for writers:
1. Analogies Boost Comprehension
Analogies help you explain subtle or complex ideas by reference to concepts the reader already understands.
They allow you to establish such ideas without much of the intellectual scaffolding required to build them from scratch.
To give an example, in physics class, the flow of current through an electrical wire is often explained as being like water flowing through a pipe. A thinner wire can take less current, just like a narrower pipe can take less water. Higher voltage is like higher water pressure.
Are water and electrical current the same? Of course not. (In fact, if you mix the two, you could literally get a nasty shock.)
But in this context, they’re similar enough to be useful.
2. Analogies Make the Unrelatable Relatable
Some concepts are easy for the reader to comprehend, but for one reason or another, they can’t easily relate to them.
As a result, your words have a difficult time sticking in their minds.
Solution? Use analogies.
By helping your reader discover unexpected connections and comparisons, you activate their imagination.
As a result, they’re better able to relate to the story you’re telling.
For example, look at George Orwell’s A Hanging. A short story about an execution, Orwell’s tale is one readers may find to be morbidly interesting, but unless they’ve witnessed an execution themselves, it’s a story they’re unlikely to find relatable.
Enter the analogy:
They crowded very close about him, with their hands always on him in a careful, caressing grip, as though all the while feeling him to make sure he was there. It was like men handling a fish which is still alive and may jump back into the water. From 'A Hanging' by George Orwell
In short:
The well-executed use of analogies can make unrelatable topics relatable to your readers.
3. Analogies Shift Perspective
Years ago, our CEO, Jon Morrow, wrote the following:
In the beginning, your blog is like an empty classroom. Standing in front and giving a lecture is silly, because sure, it might make you feel important, but there’s nobody listening. You’re all alone, and you can come up with the smartest, most entertaining lecture in the history of mankind, but it won’t matter, because no one else heard it.
Here’s the situation Jon was referring to:
Many beginning bloggers bust their guts to create content for their blogs before they have even a small audience. They just assume it’s an inevitable part of getting started and hope that a few readers will eventually drift along. As a result, every week they get up on the podium, pour their heart and soul into their message, and are greeted by crickets and tumbleweeds.
It’s a powerful image, right? A teacher standing in front of a class delivering a lesson to absolutely nobody. How deluded would you need to be to do that?
And yet thousands of bloggers did (and still do) the equivalent every day.
Jon’s analogy invites them to see their behavior in the light of a similar situation, where they can more easily see that their behavior is completely silly.
So if you can get your reader to buy into your analogy, it can be hugely persuasive. Because they’re practically forced to apply everything they know to be true about one situation to the other.
And that can create a major shift in perspective.
How to Find the Perfect Analogy for Any Situation
Finding good analogies can be tricky.
Often the most interesting and effective analogies are the least obvious, and thus the hardest to find.
Inspiration will sometimes save you, but no writer should rely on their muse too often.
Fortunately, a simple process can make finding the right analogy significantly easier.
1. List the Notable Features of Thing X
What simple statements can you make about the thing you’re trying to describe?
To take an example, let’s imagine you started a blog about finding a career and you’re writing a blog post about that awkward period where you have a job but you’re actively looking for another.
So you’re working on your resume during your lunch break, disappearing to take phone calls from recruiters, and generally struggling to maintain normal appearances in your current job while trying to land the next.
What are the notable features of that situation?
Here are some ideas:
Secrecy — usually you don’t want your colleagues (and certainly your bosses) to know you’re looking for a new job.
Clandestine meetings — leaving work early to attend interviews and inventing bogus reasons for your absence.
Feelings of guilt — you feel bad about not being entirely honest with people but don’t see another option.
2. Do a Mental Search for Other Things Sharing Those Same Features
For each of the features of Thing X, try to think of other things that also have those features by asking simple questions.
In this case:
What other situations require secrecy?
When else might you need to lie about where you were and what you were doing?
In what other situations might you feel guilty about your behavior?
The following ideas spring to mind:
Being a government spy — you certainly have a need for secrecy; you may need to lie to friends and family about where you were and what you were doing at certain times; feelings of guilt could arise from living a double life.
Arranging a surprise birthday party — you don’t want the birthday boy or girl to find out; you may have to arrange meetings behind their back with other friends, a restaurant, etc.; you may feel temporarily guilty about your dishonesty (even though you know it’s for a good cause.)
Having an extramarital affair — you don’t want your spouse to find out; you’ll probably lie about where you were to cover up your liaisons; the guilt normally associated with being unfaithful.
3. Test the Analogy by Looking for Other Similarities and Differences
Once you have some possible analogies for your situation, play Devil’s Advocate. Find ways in which the two things are not alike and decide if the differences detract from the analogy.
Taking the first of the three ideas above, one difference is that being a government spy is not a short-term situation, like looking for a new job. With a job search, you either find a new job and move on, or decide to stay.
Is that a distracting enough discrepancy to rule it out as an analogy? Maybe.
But also the fact that being a spy is a job of sorts is an unhelpful similarity. In this case though your bosses do know your secret — that you’re a spy — so that’s potentially confusing for the reader.
What about the second idea — arranging a surprise birthday party? Similar to looking for a new job, arranging a party is a short-term situation, so that could work. But unlike a job search, party planning is not about finding a replacement for an existing thing.
Finally, what about the extramarital affair? You could argue that an affair is more like moonlighting rather than changing jobs — i.e. trying to get some “extra” work on the side instead of quitting your main job. But some affairs do result in a new long-term relationship so maybe they’re not so different.
Also other interesting similarities exist. For instance, consider the consequences of getting caught sneaking around. In the career scenario you could potentially lose your job. If you’re discovered having an affair you could lose your marriage.
So this seems like the most promising analogy of the three. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty good.
But how do you know when you need to keep looking?
3 Simple Clues That You Haven’t Found the Right Analogy Yet
Choosing from several possible analogies is as much art as science, but here are some clues that you haven’t landed on the right idea just yet:
The two things are different in more ways than they are similar.
The two things are similar in most ways, but the most prominent feature doesn’t match.
The thing you’re drawing an analogy with takes too long to explain or is not widely understood.
The acid test is to ask this question:
Is the writing clearer, more persuasive, or more interesting with the analogy than without it?
3 Ways to Turn Your Analogy Power Tool to MAX
As you become more confident using analogies, consider using one of these methods to get even more power:
1. Bring an Abstract Concept to Life
Some ideas are tough to grasp because they’re naturally abstract.
In fact the whole concept of spreading ideas is quite abstract — there’s usually little to see (or hear, or feel) when an idea transfers from one person to another.
And that’s why my post on writing clearly used the analogy of assembling a flat-pack table.
Building a table piece by piece is a much more tangible process, but it has a number of features in common with “building” an idea in someone’s head.
2. Borrow Powerful Emotions From Another Context
Sometimes the benefit of using an analogy isn’t just the knowledge that comes bundled with that other thing, it’s the emotion.
So, for example, if you write for freelancers and you want to talk about the deep frustration of having first-class skills but no clients, don’t simply describe the feelings – use power words to compare the situation to being a superhero who’s forbidden to use their special powers.
Find the right analogy and you’ll conjure emotions more quickly and intensely than a simple description could ever achieve.
3. Lighten the Tone with Humor
Have you ever heard the term “seagull manager” — first coined in Ken Blanchard’s book Leadership and the One Minute Manager (affiliate link)?
Seagull managers fly in, make a lot of noise, dump on everyone, then fly out.
Pretty funny, right?
Sometimes a carefully constructed analogy can bring much-needed humor to a dry topic.
Clever analogies like the seagull manager (and its close cousin the mushroom manager) are tricky to construct, which is why this is an advanced technique for power users only.
But if you find you have a gift for them, people could be quoting you for years to come.

The Humble Analogy: Plug In, Power Up, and Take Off
Analogies are one of the most powerful tools in the writer’s toolbox.
Yes, they need careful handling, but if you follow the process above, finding the right analogy should be as simple as using a screwdriver or a saw.
Do it right and you’ll communicate — and educate — more elegantly and persuasively than ever before.
Your popularity will pick up, and that annoying plateau will soon become a distant memory.
So go ahead. Don’t be afraid. Open your toolbox.

Study: Youngest Children in Classrooms Frequently Mislabeled as ADHD – Drugged
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by Paul Fassa Health Impact News
A recent study made some international mainstream papers recently that warned of medicating children misdiagnosed as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), simply because they were the youngest students in their class.
UK's online Daily Mail included a quote from the lead author of that study, Dr. Martin Whitely, who stated:
“It appears that across the globe some teachers are mistaking the immaturity of the youngest children in their class for ADHD. Although teachers don't diagnose it, they are often the first to suggest a child may have ADHD.”
The Study Publicized is Actually a Recent Review of Several Similar Studies
The study was published by the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Allied Disciplines on October 14, 2018, with the title: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder late birthdate effect common in both high and low prescribing international jurisdictions: systematic review.
The “late birthdate” label describes situations where a child's birthday falls on a later date of the year than most of his or her classmates' birthdays. This potentially places that child at a less mature stage of development as the others in the same class.
A description of a child's behavior considered ADHD leads to a prescription of pharmaceutical psychotropic drugs that mimic cocaine and amphetamine, even to children four years old and younger.
The researches examined 19 studies in 13 countries that looked into over-diagnosing school children as ADHD, and they added another three studies that were related to bring the total studies reviewed at 22.
Because the 22 studies used too many divergent methods, the review authors used the systemic review method, which examines each study individually, instead of the meta-analysis method, which combines the statistics from the studies reviewed to form an opinion or conclusion.
They concluded:
It is the norm internationally for the youngest children in a classroom to be at increased risk of being medicated for ADHD, even in jurisdictions with relatively low prescribing rates. (Study abstract)
Pharmaceutical Drugs Used for ADHD are Dangerous for Everyone
Brand names Ritalin, or other generic methylphenidate drugs under different names, and Adderall are the most commonly prescribed drugs that combine mixtures of amphetamine salts, which are similar in effect and structure to what illegal “meth” labs produce.
The popular TV series “Breaking Bad” had that theme as its focus for increased violent behavior and addiction. The DEA classifies ADHD drugs as Schedule II, which is summarized as subject to abuse and addiction, explaining:
[ADHD drugs] produce discriminative stimulus effects similar to cocaine, will substitute for each other and for cocaine in a number of paradigms, and chronic high-dose administration of either drug in animals produces psychomotor stimulant toxicity including weight loss, stereotypic movements, and death, and in clinical studies, they produce behavioral, psychological, subjective and reinforcing effects similar to cocaine.
… this data means that neither animals nor humans can tell the difference between cocaine, amphetamine or methylphenidate when they are administered the same way at comparable doses. In short, they produce effects that are nearly identical. [Emphasis added] (Source)
Yet – Methylphenidate and amphetamine salts are the first-line treatments for ADHD … (Source)
The ADHD diagnosis starts with a school official or teacher's complaint to the parents or a higher up school official.
Orphanages and foster parents designated by Child Protection Services or similar agencies can also complain, and if parents refuse to drug their children they risk losing them to the State. See:
Ohio Parents Disagree with School Over ADHD Diagnosis – Lose 7 Year Old Son to CPS
Ultimately there's always an MD to diagnose ADHD and prescribe one of the drugs discussed. Psychiatrists are MD's, and only an MD can prescribe a pharmaceutical drug. Psychologists or counselors cannot prescribe any Big Pharma drugs.
On the other hand, whatever level of talk therapy psychiatrists were known for a few decades ago has been abandoned for one-time short visits for quick observations that lead to prescriptions for ADHD drugs.
If those drugs don't handle the symptoms, then other pharmaceutical psychotropic drugs are prescribed, such as drugs for anxiety and depression or even anti-psychotic drugs are prescribed.
The diagnosis of ADHD is based on observations of behavior. There are no blood tests, urine samples, brain scans, or other commonly-used medical tools to determine the purported chemical imbalances that these drugs are marketed as able to correct. However, treating ADHD is a multi-billion dollar industry. See:
Over 10,000 American Toddlers Are Being Given ADHD Drugs
The ADHD Diagnosis Used to Drug Children is Junk Science
youtube
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, commonly known as the DSM with various numbered editions and considered the bible of psychological conditions, suggests that any MD without talk therapy or counseling experience can prescribe drugs with little to no patient interaction.
All the DSM does is describe observable behaviors and label them. For every label, there's a pharmaceutical “solution.” Recent editions of the DSM, such as the DSM-5, are put together by a “task force” containing only a few psychiatrists who meet and decide what needs to be amended or added to the most current DSM edition.
A few years ago, a retired psychiatrist stated that ADHD was a “fictitious disease” in a German magazine interview. He was involved with the task force that originally posited and recorded it as a disorder in the DSM-5.
He died a few months later claiming he had never intended it to be treated like a biological or biochemical disease. (Source)
Another psychiatrist who was also a DSM task force chairman, Allen Frances, stated:
“There are no objective tests in psychiatry-no X-ray, laboratory, or exam finding that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder. There is no definition of a mental disorder. It's bull-.” (Source)
All the drugs are intended to do is inhibit those behaviors. With children, that means a psychotropic drug can be prescribed from a book describing a set of behaviors decided by a small task force committee of prominent psychiatrists.
A very concise description the DSM-5 offers for ADHD is:
A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.
It might interest you to look through a more complete list of behaviors to see how many apply to your kids or yourself when you were a kid. The point is, these behaviors are common to many kids and can be modulated with many natural solutions without side effects that will be discussed a little later in this article.
The brain chemical imbalance explanation of mental disorders or disease is not completely false. But the pharmaceutical industry should not be involved with it.
Orthomolecular psychiatry has successfully handled some mental disorders and dysfunctions with high doses of safe nutrient supplements.
It's easy to experiment with supplements and herbs since they're not dangerous. Then patient improvements can be directly noted clinically and continued from empirical evidence, or simply stated, seeing obvious results and using what works.
But MD psychiatry has mostly abandoned talk therapy and prefers the pharmaceutical stuff. The prescription pad has mostly replaced the notepad. And Big Pharma is happy to provide psychiatrists with drugs that aren't really fully tested for safety.
Postmarketing Ritalin has produced the following FDA reported side effects:
Sudden death in people who have heart problems or heart defects
Stroke and heart attack
Increased blood pressure
New or worse behavior and thought problems
New or worse bipolar illness
New or worse aggressive behavior or hostility
New psychotic symptoms (such as hearing voices, believing things that are not true, are suspicious)
New manic symptoms
Increased heart rate
Slowing of growth (height and weight) in children
Seizures
Eyesight changes or blurred vision (Source)
A list of Adderall side effects reported to the FDA include:
Aggressive behavior or hostility
Bipolar illness
Worse behavior or thought problems
Psychotic symptoms (hearing voices, believing things that are not true) or manic symptoms
Sudden death in patients who have heart problems or heart defects
Stroke or heart attack
Increased blood pressure and heart rate
Seizures and eyesight changes
Slowing of growth in children (Source)

Resolving Complaints of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Symptoms
There are three main avenues to help a child avoid being subjected to being medically-drugged, resulting in little to no progress, with considerable mental and physical adverse health complications.
Nutritional: This is a common area for ADHD symptoms. Get off the standard American diet (SAD) of highly processed foods. Don't cave-in to childish requests for processed cereals and breakfast foods with too much sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in addition to the artificial dyes that create those colorful items.
Get in the habit of having real food around for you and the kids. Limit sugar. Use purified water for drinking and cooking to avoid fluoride. Encourage exercise over video games and TV. Add dietary supplements that are mentally beneficial, such as the B vitamins and magnesium citrate. See:
Pesticides tied to ADHD in children
Educational: Not everyone handles the regimentation of our public school educational system well. Not everyone is suited for sitting still for hours while being confronted with subject matter that's irrelevant or boring.
Some need more stimulation and have other interests. Perhaps a school that specializes in the creative arts may be more suitable. There are private educational systems that allow kids to learn at their own pace in their own way, leading to an individual who can think on his or her own.
Homeschooling is one of those options if one can provide it. Other systems include the Montessori and Rudolf Steiner systems. (Source)
Emotional/Spiritual: If there is little to no positive family involvement and/or role-modeling, what can be expected? Familial bonding that's real and not posed is an important aspect of avoiding what are considered social disorders and poor mental health leading to drugging the nation's children.

See:

See:

Reflection 3
For this week’s classes, we learned all about the different applications we could use to aid learning and teaching.
The first one we were introduced to was noisli, an application which is supposed to either relax a person or help a student concentrate better, and therefore increase productivity, by producing a range of sounds. The student has to create a free account to be able to use the application, though once they have done this they can create their personalised sounds which help them in various situations. We spent quite a while trying out the different sounds and finding out which ones we enjoyed hearing the most and which ones annoyed or just plain irritated us. I have tried out using it outside of class and found that I enjoy using most when trying to go to sleep since total silence somehow makes it difficult to relax. It also is quite useful when trying to concentrate on doing your work though sometimes I need to listen to some kind of music rather than white noise.
The next one we discussed was Formative (goformative.com) which is great for visual learners and children due to the fact that it’s a website where the students can draw out their ideas, equations or brainstorms. This website can be used for group projects in real time and promotes creativity during classes and homework. I think I would like to use this in classes with older children since from what I can see they have more freedom to try out new things using Formative instead of writing/drawing on paper. It also might be more familiar to younger generations as they grow up using laptops, tablets and so on.
We were introduced to the concept of a flipped classroom afterwards. To begin with no one in class knew what that was and we came up with different theories to explain the idea. The explanation as to what a flipped classroom is, is quite simple, the students watch a video of what is being covered in class and make notes of it at home after which they go to class and use the time there to ask questions or discuss what they saw. In theory, this method of teaching would be more time efficient, since the students come to class with the knowledge already given to them and can therefore make use of the class time in a different way. The other good thing about this method of teaching is that the students would be able to go over different parts of the video if they didn’t understand or missed something and make notes on that part, this would enable the students to make better and more comprehensive notes on the subject overall. However, the problems with this method of instruction would include the student not understanding the topic and needing to wait until class time to ask their questions. Another issue could be that the students cannot build a good rapport with the teacher, which as we have already discussed could have some serious repercussions, because there is very little face to face time with the teacher.
Next one we were introduced to is called ‘write about’. This application is used in some schools in not only writing classes but also science classes. One of the benefits of it include the fact that it is easy to use for young learners and can be used in a variety of situations such as class activity or as an individual one. Students can get instant feedback from their teachers and are often encouraged to write about their interests to get them started, after which the students often find that writing is less difficult in comparison to more traditional ways of writing stories. This social platform is a great help for students who have difficulties writing otherwise. Last but not least we were told that social media is a good way to teach students and that MEME’s can be utilised in classroom.
For our activity of the week we were to create a lesson plan for a specific age group and present it to the rest of the class later on.
Once we were split into our groups we discussed what we wanted to do and later came up with the idea to teach a group of 10 year olds some basic first aid. We agreed that the lesson needed to be memorable, fun, practical and relatable. Meaning that we needed to have activities and the kind of first aid they could implement in their own lives. We thought that they should be able to be able to bandage themselves and others up when it came to small injuries and possibly be able to help a person into the recovery position.
We identified the weaknesses to be the fact that our chosen age group would have a short attention span, might be over excited as well as the fact that they could be more competition focused instead of focusing on what the lesson is trying to teach them.
For the actual lesson we chose to have a video simulation at the beginning of the class where we could periodically stop the video and ask the class what they would do in the situation after which the video would continue. The class would then play a game to enforce the information they had learned from the video. After the game the students would get a demonstration of a simulated emergency which they then would need to go through as well.
The last thing that we then proposed we would do in such a class was a quiz to find out how much of the lesson the class remembered. We thought that using an application like Kahoot would be perfect since the class could play in groups and would be able to compete against others for a prize at the end.
The problems that we identified that we might come across were: the fact that the video could be too disturbing for some of the students, that they might not be able to relate to the situations depicted in the video, that the students might not take the video seriously or might be bored of it. The game was not without its own problems. We though that it might go one of two ways either the students would be too competitive or not competitive enough. The simulation could cause fights between the students, they might not take it seriously or it could cause them stress. The quiz could become too competitive and therefore the students wouldn’t be focused on the content. After presented it to the class and asked if anyone had any questions we were surprised to find out that no one had any for us, though other groups were often swamped with questions.
This website has a list of different learning applications that can be used to teach toddlers a range of different things:

Picture Projects for Visual Novices
A picture is really worth a thousand phrases, however to a visual learner it is really worth so much greater. Connecting the dots for a visible learner can be difficult, but with images, it could be each creative and fun.
here are a few approaches the use of photographs can stimulate your Visible learner or simply ignite creativity in students.
Watch Free Tv
pics Inspire creative Writing At the beginning of the faculty 12 months, I had college students deliver in a toddler picture for our elegance bulletin board. earlier than putting a photo on board, I had them transfer photos and write an innovative tale on what they believed was occurring within the picture.
For a history lesson, I copied numerous pictures of infantrymen or advertisements from WWII. college students have been assigned writing a poem or other kinds of expressive writing, or giving an oral presentation, explaining the image.
pictures Create magnificence Recollections When you consider that fifth grade is the end of the elementary years (at the least in my school), I had the students buy a 12 x 12 scrapbook at the beginning of the 12 months. The ultimate Friday of the month we might take the last thirty mins or so to document unique sports or activities that came about for the duration of the month. This not only served as a reminiscence for the students however as a lesson in journal writing.
All through the month, I’d hold onto writing Initiatives, math Projects, and so forth that were completed and stood out from the everyday lessons. college students would specific their mind approximately a selected occasion at the page with pix, unique writings, handouts, flyers, etc. some students became very worried inside the hobby the usage of distinctiveness scissors, papers, die cuts, stickers, and so on. a few saved the pages very simple.
It was super looking each pupil specific him/herself in various ways. by means of the give up of the 12 months, the scrapbook served as both a reminiscence e-book but additionally as a writing portfolio.
snap shots Make stronger the house-to-college Connection Most mother and father love to look what their toddler is doing in magnificence. some dad and mom might take a seat inside the classroom all day if we’d permit them! But; for those who are not able to volunteer or do not have time to just pop in and spot what goes on, photographs permit them to connect to the college and infant.
More than one years ago, I invested in a smart cellphone – smartest factor I ever did! In much less than a minute, I’m able to photograph unique activities and shoot out an email to all mother and father with a touch “diddy” of what we were doing at the time. To tricky on the picture, I may also ask mother and father to comment or to “critique” the hobby. The responding emails might then be published on our lecture room network board or given to students for his or her scrapbook. (now not all parents reply, however, I’ve had at the least 90% accomplish that. For those students who dad and mom did not reply, I will write some thing to submit on the board).
students love to peer the pix of them “stuck working” and will comment on what they have been doing while the image changed into taken. also, the images I ship function a communique starter on the dinner desk when mom/dad asks “what did you do in school today?” dad and mom can display the photograph and ask students to give an explanation for what was going on.
The out of sophistication activities, Inspire parental involvement and supply a risk for parents to paintings with their infant. It is also first-rate for parents to proportion with a family who might not live close to the child to sense more linked.
pix Simplify difficult instructions Technological know-how is a tough concern for the Visual learner, as it regularly calls for summary wondering, for a visible learner that could increase beyond the area of imagination and create confusion. To put matters into an angle or extra concrete thinking, I may also use classroom pics.
As an example, I was coaching on light and spectrum. To help illustrate this idea, I assigned a digicam mission. I requested students to take photos of diverse gadgets that suit into particular classes referring to our Science chapter (As an example, shadowing and reflection). the usage of what we talked about in class, college students have been asked the usage of cameras, to find or create situations that met the specified category and take a picture. For shadowing, of course, the scholars had to take an image for the duration of the day. no longer only did they need to take a photo, however, students needed to be aware of positioning, the attitude, and so much extra (brilliant extension to the Science lesson).
After they had been finished, every scholar becomes then requested to broaden their photos, vicinity them in a small picture album (dollar shop range) and using an index card, explain the medical term/idea for the picture positioned in the slot in the back of the photo. Now the students had a fun, creative, and relevant use of the Science principles to which they could talk over with for testing and different classes. This will also be completed reading weather, animal habitats, rocks and minerals, and a lot greater.
images assist in Trouble Fixing In an earlier blog, I expressed my love for math and math Tasks. using pictures with various math sports and having students write out the steps, arranging sequence, and piecing together Problem puzzle portions, assists in mastering the procedure to tough math equations.
For instance, we have been studying a way to calculate tax on purchases. Because it becomes close to Christmas time, I had the scholars bring in numerous flyers. I asked each pupil to create a Christmas listing and with a given finances, students needed to start their “purchasing”. After looking for absolutely everyone, we listed the stairs to calculating tax together on the board (I took a picture of our steps). the scholars then had to finish a price range chart that showed charge earlier than and after tax.
This task took a few days to finish. I took photographs as students had been at every level of the task. (I.E. Making listing, deciding on gadgets, the usage of calculator or working out Problem by means of hand, filling in budget chart, including tax, and final calculations). I then advanced the photographs (or You could print out if you have photo paper and shade printer) numbered the images, and published on the bulletin board.
students have been then assigned a range of photo and asked to provide an explanation for the strategies to that specific step. This helped them understand the concept and techniques involved in calculating tax, multiplying chances, and additionally, ought to have served as a sequencing lesson. What did we do first, subsequent… and so on?
NFL Playoff Picture
photographs Customize school paintings Education students love sports and Initiatives that are non-public to their lives or that give the opportunity to proportion more approximately them. My class and I examine collectively The arena In line with Humphrey, a satisfying tale approximately a hamster who joins a fifth-grade classroom. on the cease of the tale, I gave each student a bit publication I created and a tag board hamster to shade and name.
students had been then assigned to journal seven days inside the life in their hamster. They were recommended to take pictures in their hamster in numerous settings and sports. They loved this! I obtained such superb adventures involving my students and their hamsters with pictures! by way of making this venture personal, college students had been more concerned than they could be writing a fashionable e-book record.

Kids who enjoy reading? Imagine that…
Great little rant in the Boston Globe magazine about summer reading programs libraries have.

Hogan blasts invoice that would limit training reforms
Gov. Larry Hogan on Friday blasted a schooling reform bill that is transferring through the overall Assembly, calling it “faulty and horrible.”
                                             Hogan Blasts
Hogan Hulk
Hogan said the invoice — known as the “Protect Our Faculties Act” — could thwart “an exciting opportunity to transport beyond previous practices” for reforming Faculties.
The invoice might set requirements for how to become aware of low-performing Faculties, using a mixture of test scores and other factors, along with absenteeism and the variety of extraordinarily certified teachers.
It also prohibits the kingdom from taking some of the actions to reform low-performing Schools, which includes searching for to transform them to non-public charter Colleges, bringing in non-public operators, giving the scholars vouchers for private Schools and placing all low-acting Faculties into a brand new statewide “healing” school district.
“Lamentably, in one of the maximum outrageous and irresponsible actions our legislature has ever taken, the House has exceeded and the Senate is currently debating an invoice that prohibits the county Board of education from taking any significant movement to make any enhancements to help consistently low-appearing Faculties,” Hogan said in the course of a nation House information conference.
Hogan said the invoice eliminates “needed responsibility” for these Colleges and “will make it nearly impossible for our country to keep a number of these consistently failing Colleges.”
The bill would set parameters for figuring out low-performing Colleges using a method that is predicated on taking a look at rankings for 55 percentage and different factors — including absenteeism and the variety of extraordinarily qualified instructors — at 45 percentage. The country has proposed weighting check ratings at 70 to 80 percent.
Hogan stated he’ll try and block the invoice from passing, in any other case he’ll veto it.
The timing of the bill is vital, as the nation faculty board is growing a plan to send to the federal government to reveal how it’s going to become aware of and help suffering Faculties. The plan is needed to conform with the federal Every Scholar Succeeds Act and is due in September. The invoice might restrict what the nation board can put inside the plan.
Hogan declares new bipartisan ban on fracking The nation Board of education is against the bill, as is kingdom Colleges Superintendent Karen Salmon. She stated the nation heard from masses of humans earlier than the draft plan was written. She thinks choices on education policy are higher left to the college board than the legislature.
Salmon and Hogan have raised concerns that if the state’s plan for the Every Pupil Succeeds Act is determined insufficient, the federal government would possibly yank $250 million in federal funding for Colleges with high poverty rates.
“There desires to be, at this factor, a few kind of a compromise we will develop due to the fact we can’t be in direct violation of federal regulation,” Salmon said.
The nation school board also opposes the invoice
The bill is advancing via the legislature at a rate that might pressure the governor to sign or veto it in time for lawmakers to take a veto override vote before the cease of the overall Assembly session on April 10. The House of Delegates already passed the invoice by using a veto-proof margin and its beneath attention in the country Senate.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller predicted a model of the bill will bypass his chamber, but he’s no longer sure if he will have the votes to override a veto promised by Hogan.
“I suppose the governor will veto the bill and we won’t have Each Democrat voting for it, but most will,” the Calvert County Democrat said Friday.
Invoice Factoring
Hogan’s pledge to veto the invoice is the 0.33 veto promise he’s made this session: He additionally announced plans to veto bills requiring organizations to offer ill depart for workers and every other that might limit how government and law enforcement officials can assist the federal authorities on immigration enforcement.
Del. Eric Luedtke, one of the invoice’s chief sponsors, countered that it’s essential to decide Colleges on more than simply take a look at scores. He said plenty of reform options are still to be had, and the bill objectives to save you the privatization of the public school gadget.
“The state board cannot step in and unilaterally inform your school to privatize,” said Luedtke, a Sir Bernard Law County Democrat, who determined Hogan’s news conference.
Luedtke stated it’s now not probably that federal budget for excessive-poverty Faculties might be at threat because the federal government gives a huge range to states in how they comply with the Each Pupil Succeeds Act. Guiding Standards For Instructional Reform
One reads a superb deal concerning schooling reform these days. It might almost seem as though this were some new trend in schooling. Certainly, it isn’t always. I’ve been an educator for over thirty years. My subject of the information is analyzing. After coaching in an ordinary simple classroom for multiple years, I finished a grasp’s diploma in studying and learning disabilities. Except for a five-year run to attend seminary and function a complete time minister, I’ve been an instructor of fundamental analyzing. In 1995, I finished a doctorate in reading/Instructional psychology. At that point, I commenced teaching studying methods in a university setting.
Over my thirty years of involvement in education, I have seen many, many reforms. some have come from the right, others from the left. within the field of studying, once I commenced my coaching, basal reading programs were in, and we tried to teach Each ability recognized to humanity. Next, complete language gained quite a following. Next, an oldie, but a famous one, reappeared: phonics. Now we are emphasizing a balanced approached-I assume that is probably a step inside the right path.
we are able to without problems make bigger this dialogue beyond the boundaries of studying. once I began attending fundamental faculty in 1960, math changed into a “drill and kill” pastime. The expectancy becomes getting to know the fundamental math facts and strategies whether or not you understood them or now not. It’s miles rather smooth to see in case you discovered beneath this approach. just try and give an explanation for “conceptually” why half divided by using 4 is 1/eight, and why to arrive at that one have to “invert and multiply.” I’m amazed at how many can’t give an explanation for the multiplication and department of fractions at the conceptual degree.
Whilst I was approximately 1/2 way thru my elementary college schooling, the so-referred to as “new math” hit the educational international. I consider well spending most of my fourth-grade 12 months (When it started in Kansas Metropolis) marking that five + 2 > 1 + three. I appreciated this math. I was now not too proper on the old stuff, and I found this a breeze.
human beings end up very opinionated approximately Instructional reform. I’ve seen many a warfare over the difficulty of complete language vs. Phonics. It looks like each person gets includes. school room teachers shape strong critiques. Politicians from strong critiques and include reform as part their political platform. They understand schooling is a warm button problem with the electorate. One institution that I watch with exceptional diligence is the religious right. It appears as though they have turned such components of instructional reform as phonics-based analyzing guidance and help for the No Toddler Left At the back of Act into something equivalent to spiritual dogma. It seems to make little sense, turning studying methods into a nonsecular or quasi-religious crusade, however, that’s what the leaders of the nonsecular proper seem devoted to supporting (James Dobson, as an example).
I reiterate: Instructional reform isn’t new. With that notion disposed of, I would love to signify 3 Standards of any lasting and useful Academic reform. these are characteristics of reform supported over the lengthy haul by an awful lot research and dictated by using common sense. I have arrived at these thru observation of reform cycles that I’ve seen at some stage in my years of work as an educator.
First, education reform can’t be check-pushed. presently, the watchword is accountability. From this angle, teachers are cagey, lazy actors who want to have their toes held to the fire to make them perform. I’ve discovered hundreds of instructors over the years, worked with hundreds of pre-carrier teachers, and supervised properly over one hundred Pupil instructors. I ought to admit, one does rarely come across a lazy, careless instructor, but It is unusual. The try and manipulate teachers and Scholar achievement by using standardized checks is an erroneous approach.
A current observe via the educational Checking out service, makers of the SAT and nationally used trainer certification assessments, revealed that there may be a good deal in Scholar overall performance that can not be controlled through Schools. In reality, ETS located 4 variables: absenteeism, the percent of kids dwelling in single-parent households, a number of television kids watch, and what kind of preschoolers are studied to daily via caregivers (in particular parents) had been a correct predictors of studying take a look at outcomes used for No Child Left In the back of reporting in 8th-grade. It appears that evidently learning involves many variables (the 4 factors accounted for over -thirds of the differences in aggregated country Trying out consequences). Home elements are things that Faculties and teachers can not control.
In place of Checking out and Checking out but greater, a higher use of funding would be the improvement of situations for mother and father and households. investment Head Start effects in a measurable boom in IQ scores for deprived children. Why now not continue to fund enriched environments for Head Start youngsters after they go away this system and assist keep floor already received? Why no longer fund more “dad and mom as first instructors” applications to enter the homes and teach parents the way to assist get their preschoolers geared up for school? Why not spend more money eradicating poverty-particularly when you consider that that appears to be the real trouble?
Hogan Meaning
Second, a powerful reform software could insist on scope and sequence. by way of scope, I discuss with the content material taught, through the collection, I discuss with While the content material is to be mastered. This became one of the downfalls of the entire language movement. It taught analyzing without any actual coordination of substances, curriculum, or expectations for mastery in terms of Whilst anticipated benchmarks must be met. plenty more coordination of coaching needs to take region and curriculum courses and agreed upon content are vital.
